They’ve impacted my life in ways that go far beyond what I ever expected. Yes, they’ve played a big role in building my career by sharing their quirky personalities online — but more than anything, they’ve brought so much joy into my life and have been a constant through every season, including some of the hardest ones.
Humane Education Helps Stop Animal Cruelty and Gender-Based Violence By teaching empathy and respect, humane education addresses the connection between animal cruelty and human violence, helping build safer communities.
H
u ma ne educat ion teaches empathy and respect for all living beings, helping to address both animal cruelty and human violence. Humane Canada’s Promising Practices Project, funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada, supports programs that engage men and boys as allies. Animals are often used to control victims, highlighting the need to reach youth and tackle root causes
of violence. By educating children and youth, we can help break this cycle. Research shows that those who harm animals are more likely to harm people. Humane education fosters positive behaviours, conflict resolution, and kindness, contributing to safer communities. Humane Canada is a leading national charity dedicated to animal welfare, representing over 60 humane societies and SPCAs across Canada.

Living with them day to day has taught me so many things that I didn’t even realize at the time would carry over into motherhood. Patience. Consistency. Staying calm in chaos. Showing up every day, even when you’re tired. And when I became a mom to twins, I realized how much of that translated. They’ve been more than just pets — they’ve shaped how I move through life, and ultimately, how I show up as a mom.
How Humane Canada Accreditation Is Raising the Bar for Animal Welfare Humane Canada Accreditation recognizes organizations that meet rigorous standards for animal care, governance, and transparency, strengthening trust with communities and donors.
O
rganizations are independently assessed to ensure they demonstrate the highest standards that meet continuous improvement and ethical operations. Accreditation provides confidence that they are operating ethically, responsibly, and in the best interests of both animals and people. The Ottawa Humane Society led the way as the first organization in Canada to achieve Humane Canada Accreditation, setting a powerful example of sector leadership and accountability. More recently, the Edmonton Humane Society and the Hamilton/ Burlington SPCA have earned their accreditation seals, joining a growing movement of organizations voluntarily committed to nationally recognized standards that you can trust. Hu m a ne Canada Accreditation represents more than just a seal; it signifies a commitment to excellence and a pledge to care for animals with transparency and integrity.
