FROM THE IRGA PRESIDENT

WELCOME to the 502 IN THE 505!

U

nbelievable that just a few weeks ago IGRA celebrated the 500th Gay Rodeo that the world has ever known in picturesque Duncan Mills, California, and now we’re gathered for our 31st World Gay Rodeo Finals Presented by Corona Extra in The Duke City – Albuquerque. With its melding of multiple cultures, where Spanish influence meets American West, it's an ideal host location for this weekend’s culmination of our Rodeo and Royalty year. We’re glad you’ve joined us, whether you’re a casual first-time rodeo watcher or a dyed-in-the-wool longtime fan. Throughout the weekend you’ll experience some of the local flavor of the rich Albuquerque community, top cowboys and cowgirls vying for championship titles and maybe even go home with a uniquely beautiful souvenir buckle. We’re deeply grateful to our local partners at EXPO New Mexico, Sheraton Airport, and Sidewinders for their cooperation in hosting our events. The New Mexico Gay Rodeo Association, led by President Rich Taylor, has pitched in all year to build excitement, paving the way for our return to the Land of Enchantment. And of course, the hard working WGRF Committee led by Rodeo Director Lisa Smith and her team of Assistant Rodeo Directors has truly worked year round to bring this event to life. They’ll be supported in the arena, behind the chutes, even up to the crow’s nest by a first rate army of arena crew, chute crew, timers and rodeo officials, each of whom donates his or her time, all for the love of the sport and a desire to serve the communities in which each is involved. IGRA and its Member Associations have compiled a startling record, returning over $4,000,000 to charities operating in their local communities and throughout the country. This year we’re proud to add Joshua Tree, StupidCancer and Equest to our family. Part of that is possible thanks to Sponsorship partners, selfless volunteers, Royalty who’ll think of anything to get your last dollar bill for charity and a host of guests, donors and spectators who’ll willingly play along … and pay along. Sit back, relax, enjoy the show, have some fun and spend a little time with our family. It doesn’t matter if you’re a rodeo virgin or veteran, man or woman, young or old, gay, straight or anything in between, a city slicker or a country bumpkin – come as you are! You’ll find a place here. And you just might decide to throw on some sneakers and chase a goat next time!

WORLD GAY RODEO FINALS RETURNS to HISTORIC ROOTS

A

fter a year of competing at various state and regional rodeos, this is the time when the point leaders come to IGRA’s annual World Gay Rodeo Finals (WGRF) to compete for titles and those amazing buckles. Being held this year in Albuquerque’s impressive EXPO New Mexico, the 31st WGRF has really come back to rodeo's historic roots. Thanks to the Spanish conquistadors who introduced horses to the American West and the Spanish-Mexican settlers who raised them along with cattle, the Southwest became the birthplace of the rodeo. While many places lay claim to holding the first American rodeo, the oldest is Santa Fe’s claim of 1847. Santa Fe isn’t exactly Albuquerque but it’s within spitting distance, as the saying goes. So savor the diversity Albuquerque offers while you’re soaking up the wonderful diversity always found at an IGRA rodeo, knowing that you’re keeping part of the Western heritage alive and well!

2017 WGRF GRAND MARSHALS GRAND MARSHALL CANDY PRATT Candy Pratt joined TGRA in the fall of 1989, and the next season she won her first of many IGRA All-Around Champion Cowgirl titles. She now holds the record for the most earned event buckles and All-Around Cowgirl titles for both the IGRA circuit rodeos and the IGRA finals, donating many of her buckles and awards back to her association or to other non-profit fundraising events. With a focus on helping the IGRA organization, contestants and member associations, Candy has served in a number of leadership roles within IGRA, TGRA, OGRA, NSGRA and RRRA, most recently holding the first RRRA Rodeo School and teaming with TGRA. Always going above and beyond, in the past two years Candy has traveled to almost every rodeo, hauling horses from northeast Pennsylvania to California’s west coast. She is a truly positive example to all contestants and for all her efforts, in 2009 she was inducted into the IGRA Hall of Fame! Candy has enjoyed her involvement with IGRA and appreciates the community support and the diverse rodeo family. This weekend let’s congratulate Candy Pratt as the 2017 World Gay Rodeo Grand Marshal.

HONORARY GRAND MARSHAL BOB PIMENTAL Bob Pimental, IGRA’s fifth president, passed away in March 2017 after a tenacious fight. To the very end he showed his devotion to his family, his passion for rodeo and his unfailing grace and good cheer. A pioneer of gay rodeo and founding member of the New Mexico Gay Rodeo Association, from its earliest conception Bob was one of those who ensured this “gay rodeo thing” would catch on. No matter which Association he was representing at the moment, Bob zealously worked to promote IGRA and our rodeo family. He served as Trustee multiple times, Rodeo Director for local and IGRA, Annual Convention Chair, and was also an infinite resource for stories of who we are and how we got here. As IGRA President he oversaw an unprecedented expansion of several new Associations, among them ASGRA and NGRA, and the first expansion of IGRA into Canadian provinces. In 2011 Bob was selected for the prestigious IGRA Hall of Fame. Even with failing health, Bob's rodeo dedication continued as he watched this year's Phoenix Rodeo unfold, the final rodeo he directed. Bob Pimental will be remembered by a vast array of IGRA friends and his family. He contributed much of his life to the New Mexico and Arizona Gay Rodeo Associations and to IGRA as a whole. Today we CELEBRATE Bob Pimental as the 2017 World Gay Rodeo Finals Honorary Grand Marshal. Here to accept Bob’s award is his loving partner, Arnie Chavez. Photo courtesy of IGRA

COMMUNITY HERO

THE AUSTIN BABTIST WOMEN

I

BY GARRY HOLLEY

n September of 1986 Glen Hostetler, Tim Jackson, Philip Prock and I, all members of TGRA Austin decided to put together a little entertainment for the TGRA state meeting in Austin. Who would have dreamed that 31-years later our tongue-in-cheek joke would still be helping fund HIV/AIDS and breast cancer patient care, education and research? Starting with tacky dresses, gray wigs, pearls, glasses, gloves, rolled-down knee-high hose and makeup from St. Vincent de Paul, we learned to perfectly lipsync the old Happy Goodman Family’s “Looking for a City.” The Austin Babtist Women were BORN! With the credo “Raising Spirits and Money for Charity,” we hit the road with hymnals and tambourine in hand. As requests grew, we juggled jobs and lives with performances until we finally became a commercial group. We’ve performed all over the U.S. on legitimate stages, open fields, parks, barns and pools; we’ve even been honored and recognized by mayors, state representatives, senators and local, state and national organizations. But we’ve never forgotten our TGRA roots and still work with the Austin chapter as well as travel to perform at state rodeos. We will continue our mission until there is a cure, Lord willing, by booking as many fundraising events as possible. As of September 2017 we have helped raise $7,368,034.00 across America for HIV/AIDS and breast cancer causes. So when you hear “Austin Babtist Women,” come out and support the effort – it’s guaranteed to be a great cause as well as a pretty dang good show. For a giggle, check out our website: www.babtistwomen.com. It guides you to our Facebook pages and some You Tube clips. For booking information contact Garry Holley at 512-291-1563.

2017 WGRF EVENT DESCRIPTIONS

I

GRA’s 13 sanctioned events are listed in four categories: rough stock, roping, speed and camp events. Each category then has individual events that enable contestants to show off their eventspecific skills. For a full description of each event, go to http://igra.com/EventDescriptionsPublic.htm ROUGH STOCK EVENTS Mounted on top or standing beside an animal many times a person’s size and weight, it's contestant against beast. Here a contestant attempts to outbalance or outmaneuver the animal's natural instinct to escape the contestant. These events require a great deal of skill and experience before a contestant can become a champion. Events include: Bull Riding, Ranch Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Riding and Chute Dogging. ROPING EVENTS Gay rodeo offers three roping events, one of them designed for beginners. The other two can be costly since success depends on a great horse that can sell for $10,000+. These events begin with the contestant in the ‘’roping box.’’ An imaginary start line runs across the front of the roping box and the chute where the calf or steer is held. If the contestant crosses this “barrier” line before the calf or steer clears the chute, a 10-second penalty is assessed and added to the time. Events include: Calf Roping on Foot, Mounted Break-Away Roping and Team Roping. SPEED EVENTS Speed events pit a horse and a skillful rider against the clock. Negotiating the prescribed pattern is a test of the rider’s skill and the horse’s speed and agility. A running start is permitted in these events and the fastest time wins. Events include: Barrel Race, Pole Bending and Flag Race. CAMP EVENTS Cowhands generally have their own definition of fun and challenge. Prerequisites for participation are a willingness to eat dirt and the ability to hold your own with an ornery steer or goat. Sixty percent of gay contestants get their start in these three events and the old-timers stay in because the payoffs (winnings) are the best of all events. Events include: Steer Decorating, Wild Drag Race and Goat Dressing Photo credits: © CowboyFrank.net
