We all know what happened next. The world has changed tremendously since then. Many of us are still working from home. We’ve hardly left our houses, much less the country. But hope is ascendent.

Of course, we strongly encourage everyone to stay for as long as they can. There’s a reason we’re planning the tournament in the week leading up to Capital Pride! This will be the first official Pride celebration since the pandemic, and we guarantee it will be epic!

Chair • 2022 IGLFA World Championship

2020 and 2021 were unprecedented years, filled with uncertainty, instability, anxiety, and countless plans cancelled or put on hold.

There is so much to do in this city, and we hope we’ve created an event where players actually have some time to see the sights. The matches are scheduled exclusively in the late afternoon. Players who have a tough time getting off work can telecommute during the day, those that want to see the city will have more free time to explore, and others will be sure they have enough time to sleep in, just in case anyone accidentally has a late night.

Welcome,

5www.CompeteNetwork.com | COMPETE

FTSC shares in that optimism. Emerging from a year and a half without soccer, we didn’t lose sight of our goal: to host a world class tournament for our fellow LGBTQ+ players and clubs.

WELCOME

Our plans changed slightly. With a shortened timeline, and the need to prioritize ease of organization sponsors, local partners, IGLFA organizers, clubs, and players, we decided that a 7v7 tournament format would the best option for 2022. While we know everyone loves a full-sided game, 7v7 soccer creates unique opportunities for participants to experience the fun of travel without sacrificing the quality of in-game experience.

Thank you so much for supporting our queer soccer community with your attendance. We truly hope your experience is unforgettable.

In early 2020, Federal Triangles Soccer Club (FTSC) was in the late stages of submitting a bid to host the 2021 IGLFA World Championships. At the time, we felt uniquely situated to throw an amazing tournament, and everyone in our club was on board to make it happen.

CRAIG WILLIAMS

That is especially true in Washington, D.C. Despite recent unrest, our city and our country are coming alive again. Locally, our mayor has reopened businesses, our vaccination rates are high, and we have a renewed push for voting recognition and statehood. Nationally, we are putting in the work to re-earn the respect from the rest of the world which had slowly eroded since 2016. We have a new President, our first Black and woman Vice President, and a newfound optimism for the future.

This week a variety of teams will compete in small-sided games for the honor of being IGLFA World Champions. The baton will then be handed to the organizing committee in Sydney where in February next year - to coincide with World Pride 2023 - teams will compete in both 11-a-side and small-sided games to join the honors roll call.

While I’m encouraged by the courage and bravery of players like Collin Martin in the United States, Josh Cavallo in Australia and most recently, Jack Daniels in the United Kingdom, it is clear that the IGLFA mission of promoting a safe space for LGBTQ+ participation in football, including via tournaments such as this, is still an important one.

President • IGLFA

Carlos Rosales Finance Director

My hope is that in the coming days we demonstrate the importance of soccer in enabling people to be the best versions of themselves they can be; that we show a different and more inclusive way of playing the game; and that we embrace the power of unity.

This World Championship coincides with the 30th anniversary of IGLFA. Since IGLFA was founded in the early 1990s, we have achieved a great deal of progress for LGBTQ+ people in society and in soccer in many countries across the world. However, that progress is unevenly distributed and problems still persist in soccer, particularly in the men’s professional game.

ENJOY D.C.

Yours in sport, ALEX BAKER

On behalf of the IGLFA board, our member clubs and referees, supporters and stakeholders, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Washington, D.C. for the first part of this antipode edition of our World Championships. Our thanks go to your hosts, Federal Triangles, and all those involved in putting on this spectacular tournament and associated social events. ATHLETE VILLAGE

Our beer garden will be open each day from 4 pm-7 pm with several alcohol options, including local brewery Denizens, and other refreshments. Pizza will also be delivered to the Athlete Village twice each day — 5:15 pm and 6:15 pm — for players to have dinner from Extreme Pizza. Menus will be available at each table, with QR codes below and at the tables being available for players to order their dinner. Players should place their orders for Extreme Pizza at least an hour before the desired delivery time.

You can purchase tournament & FTSC merchandise from the Athlete Village to take a piece (or two) of tournament memorabilia home with you! We will be selling t-shirts, shorts, socks, water bottles, commemorative coins, pennants, and armbands. We will accept Credit/Debit cards, Venmo, and cash.

Snacks can also be purchased at the fields office by field #3 throughout the day.

13www.CompeteNetwork.com | COMPETE

The IGLFA DC WC XXIV Athlete Village will be situated under and around the Celebration Pavillion near the center of the Fields at RFK campus, right by field #2. Here you will find our medical tent, merchandise area, beer garden, DJ, referee HQ, and other support features! The Fields at RFK also have restrooms up by field #1 and a field office run by CRYSP and EventsDC down by field #3. The Athlete Village will open one hour before games start each day and close two hours after games stop (1 pm – 8 pm).

Check our website for the most up-to-date information

Our merchandise tent is also where to go for tournament t-shirt exchanges, in case the default size distribution of shirts given to your team at registration didn’t exactly match your players.
