VISION STATEMENT Compete Sports Diversity Unites the World Through Sports. MISSION STATEMENT Compete connects, educates, empowers, and inspires mission driven LGBTQ+ and allied sports and community leaders, sports organizations, non-profit groups, tourism partners, corporate partners, and athletes to further sports diversity together through our membership, media, and event platforms.

The Power of Sports CommunityTM — We Are All Part of Something Bigger I love Seattle! That was my first thought when our team first discussed the idea of partnering with the Seahawks for our 2022 Compete Sports Diversity Summit. Everyone in Seattle has been so welcoming, from Hanna Sanford at the Seahawks to our friends at United Sports Seattle. The objective of our Summit is to bring the Seattle sports community and others together to advance Inclusion, Diversity, Equality/Equity, Acceptance and Leadership – those are our IDEAL Principles. And when we say the community, we mean everyone. Professional sports organizations, amateur sports leagues, the business community, the non-profit community and everyone else. This event is part networking, part education and a call to action. Attendees will leave the Summit with steps they can take in their local communities from day one to further sports diversity. This Summit will be an annual event thanks to our partnership with United Sports Seattle and the support we have received from everyone in Seattle. But we won’t be working in Seattle just once a year. We will be supporting the community throughout the year to come, too. We know that follow up and taking action are two important steps in a successful Summit. We strive to live our mission and vision every day. If you would like to be more involved with Compete and our vision of Uniting the World Through Sports, please reach out to me anytime (the sooner the better) and help Compete “Unite Seattle Through Sports.” Because we are all part of something bigger. With You,

Eric Carlyle, SDLT | CEO/DEI Advocate (He/Him) | eric@competenetwork.com

PLEASE – BE THE CHANGE WE NEED! By Brian Hawker, SDL | Managing Director, United Sports Seattle

In 2020 the death of George Floyd was the last straw for many within the African American community after a series of deaths of black men and women by law enforcement that year. Demonstrations of all sizes rocked the U.S. throughout that summer. In Seattle, the CHOP or the CHAZ (the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone) formed as a result of these demonstrations. People hurting from these deaths came together at the corner of 11th and Pike in Seattle, taking over the streets and nearby Cal Anderson park. The area, at the time referred to as CHAZ, was left with an indelible mark which still exists today. This has become perhaps the largest, most tangible, most public expression of Seattle’s people illustrating that racism still exists in the U.S That summer, fall and throughout 2021 professional athletes expressed their grief by wearing tributes to Floyd and the other individuals killed by police. This was after Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem in 2016 which ignited the ongoing conversation of the lack of diversity and inclusion within the professional sports community. In Seattle, several Seahawks players repeated Kaepernick’s actions throughout the season. These very visible, emotional illustrations from here in Seattle both illustrate that the need to continue our efforts remains, not only to raise diversity awareness but also the need to pursue true inclusion. This applies not only to race, but to all characteristics which can be used to separate and exclude people — gender, religion, creed, sexual identity, age, physical ability, mental wellness, education and socio-economic levels. We’re all blessed with different life experiences which make us who we are as individuals. We should be recognizing those attributes that make us unique and special, we should be celebrating those individual differences. It’s not sufficient for us only to be asked to the dance — that’s equality. Dammit, we WANT to be asked to dance once we’re there — that’s equity! This is why we’re here today; that’s the challenge. How can we cut through all the drama, all the BS and make a real difference? In attending this Summit, please, accept this challenge. Promise yourself that after these two days of education and growth, you will do what you can to improve someone else’s life, whether here in Seattle or otherwise, on the sports field or in your daily life. Be the change we need!

WHY YOU SHOULD SIGN OUR IDEAL PRINCIPLES PLEDGE AND BECOME AN SDL MEMBER? By Connie Wardman, M.A., SDLT (she/her/hers)

Our vision statement at Compete Sports Diversity is that we “Unite the World Through Sports,” something we take very seriously by working to connect, educate and inspire mission-driven LGBTQ+ and allied sports and community leaders, sports organizations, non-profit groups, tourism partners, corporate partners and athletes to further sports diversity by working together. As the education director for the Compete Sports Diversity Council (CSCD), I wanted to create a declaration of our values as an organization that would represent our many diverse groups; a philosophy which we could all agree on as human beings. And so a group of us came up with the IDEAL Principles Pledge: I-Inclusion; D-Diversity; E-Equality/Equity; A-Acceptance and L-Leadership. For any movement to fully succeed, representation is needed at many levels and in multiple ways. To that end we developed the Sports Diversity Leader (SDL) designation program to recognize our members as professional sports diversity leaders who have joined us, taken the training and are now entitled to add SDL after their name. The T on the SDLT designation indicates a focus on the Travel & Tourism Industry. Another part of that success for a movement like sports diversity is to have clear, concise messaging used by all of its members all of the time – for example, you can Google leadership and come up with multiple descriptions. But we want to have just one description, and that’s for a SPORTS DIVERSITY LEADER! When you sign up the first thing we ask you to do is to sign our IDEAL Pledge. I hope that you’ll also hang it in your office where you’ll see and reflect on it occasionally. Then your SDL education begins with four basic online classes providing the foundational information needed. Our education program strives to offer important and comprehensive education experiences through attendance at regular conferences, in-person training, mentoring, webinars or elective online classes to ensure you keep current on quickly changing topics. Please recognize that whether you’re working at your town’s Sweet Shoppe and playing softball with your local recreational league or you’re working in the C-Suite of a major international corporation and own a major league team, you are an important sports diversity leader with a sphere of positive influence to make the world a better place for everyone. Please accept my personal invitation and join us!

IDEAL PRINCIPLES By Connie Wardman, M.A., SDLT (she/her/hers)

The five defining IDEAL Principles of the Compete Sports Diversity Council are as follows: I-Inclusion, D-Diversity, E-Equality/Equity, A-Acceptance, L-Leadership. INCLUSION: Inclusion is about creating an environment that makes people feel welcome by involving, respecting and empowering them. Inclusion harnesses the wealth of diverse ideas, connections and backgrounds for the betterment of everyone involved through recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of each individual. It promotes and sustains a sense of belonging to the sports diversity movement for those who want to help but up until now never knew how to participate. DIVERSITY: Diversity is about all the ways we differ as individuals. The range of human differences include race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, language, physical ability or attributes, religious, cultural or ethical values systems, national origin, opinions and political beliefs. It is this wonderful mix of differences that make a person, a team, an organization or a country unique. The sports diversity movement is first about recognizing and appreciating the unique richness that diversity brings us. EQUALITY/EQUITY: While many may think equality only means treating everyone exactly the same, it’s really about making sure that everyone within the group has equal opportunities, such as access to learning, participating, mentoring, volunteering and any other aspects of the sports diversity movement without discrimination or prejudice – this is equity. This equity is part of social equality, which means it also includes equal obligations, making you and other individuals more accountable for your thoughts, words and actions. It’s about creating a fairer society where everyone can not only participate but also has the opportunity to fulfill his, her or their personal potential within a group setting. ACCEPTANCE: This is really about social acceptance – it is your ability to accept and tolerate our endless diversity and to respect the individual and collective differences each individual brings with him, her or they as part of what we call “Team Human Race.” You don’t have to agree with everyone nor are you required to like all their differences as listed in the diversity section above. But it IS about you treating others with kindness; with the same dignity and respect you would want others to use when interacting with you. LEADERSHIP: The term Leadership brings to mind many different characterizations. We see Leadership at its core as the ability of a Leader to inspire, empower and equip others to reach their highest potential and become effective Leaders themselves. Authentic Leadership motivates teams and individuals to persevere toward a defined goal while understanding and abiding by the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equality/ Equity, Acceptance and Leadership. This creates an effective Sports Diversity Leader.

CSDC MEMBER GUIDE (continued)

ABOUT THE CSDC EDUCATION PROGRAM As Sports Diversity Leaders, those with the SDL or SDLT designation after your name, you will be leaders within your local, state, national and even international communities. Therefore it is important that we all speak in one voice so our message to others about Inclusion, Diversity, Equality/Equity, Acceptance and Leadership – our IDEAL Principles—is clear. The CSDC began initial development in of its education program in 2018 by hosting a number of webinars, teleconferences, one-on-one diversity coaching as well as in-person mentoring and education. Using member feedback and evaluations, education director Connie Wardman has created a comprehensive training and education program for CSDC members that begins with four basic required online courses so our members, who come from diverse backgrounds will begin by knowing how we all define and live our IDEAL Principles. After that, annual continuing education credits are obtained through in-person attendance at regular conferences, in-person training, mentoring or via webinars or elective online classes to ensure that keeping current on quickly changing topics is easily attained.
