GSWS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WELCOME

Welcome NAGAAA Softball

The 2019 Gay Softball World Series Committee would like to welcome you to Kansas City and invite you to Come to Play on and off the field. For the last two years we have been working hard to ensure that you have a fantastic time in our parks, hotels, and events. With a record number of teams, we have three premier field complexes that will support max performance in every game. Championship Saturday will be at Frank White Softball Complex in Lee’s Summit with beautiful views of Longview Lake. A memorable week awaits you with events every night. Our Opening Night Party at Power and Light will offer a great place to say hello to old friends and meet new ones. The Hall of Fame dinner will be an interactive experience that will join two great Halls of Fame and honor the people that have championed the mission of NAGAAA. Our hometown baseball team, The Kansas City Royals, is supporting our event with their First Official Pride Night on Wednesday with a tailgate KC style, with plenty of BBQ, Miller Light and Smirnoff Vodka. Thursday, we encourage you to attend Sip and Shop at Hall’s Department Store in Crown Center, then continue with a team bonding at one of our 12 sponsor restaurants and end the night at your host bar. Let’s keep the party week going on Friday with our original take on the traditional Charity Night. This rave style party will bring all the diversity of the series and Kansas City together with an epic party that you don’t want to miss. In addition to revelry, this party will support the Greater KC AIDS Service Foundation that nobly works to raise money and awareness for organizations that provide shelter, medical care and emergency services for more than 5,700 men, women and children in Kansas City affected by HIV/AIDS. To end the week, closing ceremonies will bring us all together one last night. When you aren’t playing at the fields or getting your party on, we encourage you to support our sponsor bars and restaurants. Let’s party, listen to some great music, enjoy the sportsmanship and celebrate why we all Come to Play. In closing, I want to recognize the incredible 2019 Gay Softball World Series directors, committees, volunteers and sponsors. Thousands of volunteer hours have made this all possible and they deserve thousands of high-fives. We are a proud community built on hospitality and generosity and Kansas City will show you why you Come to Play; you’ll rally to come back and see us again. Have a great week and take in all that Kansas City has to offer. Cheers,

Scott Switzer, Executive Director 2019 GSWS

NAGAAA COMISSIONER WELCOME

Welcome Players, Coaches and Fans Players, Coaches, and Fans – Welcome to Kansas City for the 2019 NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series (GSWS). It will become known for one thing – it will become known as a World Series of many firsts: • Introduction of the new E Division • A new 28-point player rating system • Our first year for players to register online before arriving at the World Series • We will Livestream broadcast the Championship Saturday games • A record number of teams competing; over 200!! Our motto this year is “Come To Play” – and we’re not kidding! Over the next week, we have more than 3,500 participants hitting and throwing more than 1,300 softballs and playing more than 850 softball games, umpired by more than 70 professionals on 21 fields. We couldn’t make this week happen without a tournament staff of more than 50 people – all of them volunteers – as well as an army of other volunteers from the Kansas City area supporting player registration, replenishing water in the dugouts, and so many other duties. I first want to thank Kansas City for opening its arms so wide for the World Series. Scott Switzer, Terri Goddard and their leadership team have put together a great lineup of events for all of you to enjoy. I also want to thank my colleagues on the NAGAAA Board, a dedicated team working year-round organizing the biggest tournament of its kind. And we couldn’t make this tournament happen without the support of our national and host city sponsors! What makes the GSWS different is that it’s more than just the competition – it’s a celebration of our community. Perhaps the dominant part of the GSWS is its representation of our diverse cross-section of the LGBTQ+ community, including our valued allies. NAGAAA honors our history – and we cheer each year for the hundreds of first-time participants and commemorate them with a medal acknowledging their accomplishment qualifying for the World Series. This year we’re inducting eight new inductees into the NAGAAA Hall of Fame. Our softball community is a place where people from all different walks of life share in the celebration of our community – and the excellence of our athletic performance. Let’s make it a great week, and we’ll see you at the fields. Come to Play!

DISCOVER KANSAS CITY

KANSAS CITY: BY CONNIE WARDMAN

Grab your comfy walking shoes because Kansas City (KC) is an amazing place to visit! It has always been an important city over the years and KC knows how to keep reinventing itself; staying current while keeping its rich history an integral part of the reinvention process. A feast for the senses, you’ll hear wonderful sounds of live music, especially jazz; you’ll smell the tantalizing aroma of barbeque; you’ll see sights of historical importance like the Negro League Baseball Museum; you’ll be able to shop for wonderful goods from across the globe; and you’ll feel the warmth and friendliness of midwestern hospitality. Kansas City truly represents the Heart of America. You’ve “Come to Play,” something KC knows all about. It’s home to the KC Royals (MLB), KC Chiefs (NFL) and Sporting KC (MLS) as well as basketball, hockey and rugby teams. On their Wednesday, September 4 game against the Detroit Tigers, the Royals are holding their first official Pride Night and a portion of each Pride Night theme ticket purchase will be donated to the AIDS Service Foundation of Kansas City. A big draw for sports fans is the Negro League Baseball Museum (NLBM). Its multimedia displays, collections of photos and artifacts plus film exhibits from the late 1800s through the 1960s reveal the important, often unknown story of Negro Leagues Baseball. Currently the museum is preparing for its 100th birthday celebration in 2020. While you’re there, check out the American Jazz Museum that shares a building with the NLBM in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District. Learn about the birth of jazz in KC through interactive exhibits that include listening stations and custom mixing boards as well as collections of photographs, sheet music and posters from the height of jazz's popularity.

DISCOVER KANSAS CITY With over 100 barbeque restaurants, you have your pick of places to try. And don’t forget to take in some local breweries to wash down that savory succulence. KC also has become a real hub for foodies coming for dishes that are both local favorites and modern takes on some classic ones by some award-winning chefs.

There’s quite an eclectic art scene in KC. The NelsonAtkins Museum of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nelson_Atkins_Art_Museum,_ Kansas_City,_Missouri_LCCN2010630148.tif

Art (known for giant shuttlecocks on the front lawn) is regarded as one of the best museums in the country with a wide range of collections from ancient to contemporary. The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is just a short walk from the Nelson-Atkins. And don’t miss the Westport Flea Market. Look for the Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill –you’ll see the burger-mobile parked out front. Bring some cash and order at the bar. Play some arcade games while you wait for one of the best cheeseburgers in KC. Other “don’t miss” places include City Market, Union Station, the National World War I Museum & Memorial and the historic yet modern Westside neighborhood. There are so many more wonderful things to see and do in Kansas City but I’ve run out of room. I think you’ll just have come back again … and again! www.CompeteSportsDiversity.com

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES NAGAAA Honors Its

Begun in 1977, NAGAAA’s Gay Softball World Series (GSWS) is now the largest annual LGBTQ+ single-sport, week-long athletic competition in the world. An organization doesn’t grow from some occasional pickup games to an international non-profit organization without the blood, sweat and tears of devoted members who love the game and want to see the group grow. NAGAAA’s Hall of Fame was established to bestow on those members its highest honor. Members of this esteemed group have made vast and significant contributions to NAGAAA over the years – they are its pioneers and innovators. Each year, we not only celebrate our Hall of Fame honorees, we also welcome new inductees. Please congratulate the eight new inductees shown below they've earned it.

SPECIAL APPRECIATION AND THANKS

Dear Kansas City Community, Thank you for hosting the 2019 Gay Softball World Series. Your open arms, hard work and commitment have provided a space for softball and the LGBTQ+ community to come together. Not only is this the largest annual LGBTQ+ single-sport, week-long athletic competition in the world but even more so, this is a time for teams from all over the continent to come together, build relationships, discover community, be their authentic selves and play a heck of a lot of softball. This year’s Gay Softball World Series could not happen without the help of countless individuals and organizations. We are thankful to NAGAAA for putting the Gay Softball World Series together for the past 42 years. We are thankful for this year’s board and dedicated members of the Kansas City community for the two years of planning they devoted to coordinate this week-long endeavor. We cannot emphasize enough how instrumental the sponsorships, donations and partnerships from the community, large businesses, small businesses, grassroots organizations and the Heart of America Softball League were in putting together this monumental event. Kansas City, you are more than just our host city; you have become a home. Hosts merely give a space for people to use until their time is up whereas homes are a promise that people can always come back and feel supported, loved and celebrated. Our softball games take place on your fields but our memories from this series exist on and off those diamonds. You are right to be proud of your community. We are honored you gave us the opportunity to explore all your spaces have to offer. Your kindness and hard work have not gone unnoticed. We are indebted for this opportunity to hold the 2019 Gay Softball World Series here. Sincerely,

The 2019 Gay Softball World Series Committee
