WELCOME

WELCOME TO OUR

20

th

anniversary run The Phoenix Frontrunners and Pride Run committees welcome you to the twentieth annual Pride Run Phoenix – Half Marathon | 10K | 5K and Finishers Expo. This year our committees hope to build on 2017’s successful event. The feedback from race participants and spectators was uniformly positive. In 2018 Pride Run Phoenix will continue to use a point-to-point half marathon, 10K and 5K course. On the professional running front Phoenix Frontrunners continues its tradition of an impressive national field. We are eager to provide elite athletes an opportunity to run a high-quality course and strive to achieve a personal best. Last year’s participation confirmed that Pride Run Phoenix is arguably one of the best race courses offered in the state of Arizona. We have also heard this is a great training run for the Boston Marathon which follows a few short weeks later. Race participants receive free admission to the Finishers Expo & Festival prior to and after the race. Participants 21 years and older will also be treated to a complimentary beer by our sponsor North Mountain Brewing. All-in-all, the entire weekend promises to be an invigorating and exciting experience for participants, spectators and volunteers alike. Please help us in thanking all of our sponsors by using and promoting their products and services whenever possible. We also thank the City of Phoenix and their respective departments and agencies for allowing us to use their streets and other public accommodations. This Pride Run event would not exist without these invaluable contributions. Finally, we thank all of you for participating, volunteering or simply cheering on the runners and walkers at all of the weekend’s events. In particular, we thank the participating runners and walkers for showing their confidence in our ability to host a world-class event. We’ll see everyone at the finish line!

IMPROVEMENT comes with weeekly consistency by harry andrew

Jason Fitzgerald, a USATF running coach and owner of the award-winning blog and podcast, Strength Running, helps runners work on their personal bests. In one of his recent articles, “8 Things Every Runner Should Do Once a Week, he says these eight simple tweaks can make you a better runner if you incorporate them into your training on a consistent once-a-week basis.

14 COMPETE 2018 Pride Run Phoenix Special Edition

1.

Sleep a Little Longer Every Night Sleeping seven-to-nine hours a night should be your minimal goal when racing and training hard. Fitzgerald says it’s during sleep when our bodies perform their magic, releasing hormones like HGH (human growth hormone) that help with your recovery. Don’t abruptly change your sleep schedule, though; slowly change by going to bed around 15-minutes earlier each night and gradually increasing until you feel you’re getting the right amount of sleep.

2.

Run with a Group Once a Week Although running can be a solitary sport and a great way to work through your plans and problems, Fitzgerald says that running with other people can also be rewarding. Long runs and speed sessions are great times to run with company since conversation not only can make time go by more quickly, it can also reduce your perceived amount of exertion. Pushing yourself in faster workouts may also benefit you but he cautions not to push so hard you wind up getting injured.

4.

|

Strengthen Your Core Emphasizing that a strong core doesn’t just mean have a set of six-pack abs, Fitzgerald says it includes all the muscles that make up your abdominals, glutes, hips and lower back, making runner-specific core work part of your regular routine. He suggests exercises like planks, bridges and a modified bicycle that work on your entire core and improve stamina and efficiency, helping to keep you injury-free.

Vary Your Surfaces Another way to avoid injury is to add some variety to your running terrain. Trails are especially helpful in working different muscles that include the small, underused stabilizers in your feet and ankles. But if you’re new to trail running, he says expect to be much slower.

6.

Lift Heavy Current research shows there are benefits to lifting weights, like improving form, preventing injuries, building power and speed as well as handling more mileage and harder workouts. But don’t lift for endurance, take random fitness classes or rely on stability training. You need to improve your ability to produce force – only heavier weights will do that.

Run Varied Paces Don’t fall into a performance plateau by running the same pace every day. Fitzgerald says you should spend about 80 percent of your time running easy (an effort level where you can talk in complete sentences) and 20 percent running faster in workouts like tempos or speed intervals.

7.

Run “Naked” Well, almost but not quite. Keep your birthday suit covered but do remove all the gadgets. Learning to listen to your body is an essential skill that according to Fitzgerald takes practice to develop. At least once a week, he suggests leaving your watch at home or setting it on time of day to avoid worrying about your pace, something that’s especially effective on a recovery day.

8.

Train Your Brain Training your brain is as important as your physical training. Fitzgerald says learn to visualize upcoming races or workouts; envision successful outcomes and how you’ll make it happen. And for races he suggests visualizing positive responses to stressors like feeling fatigued and hitting a low point. During your most difficult and race-specific workouts it’s helpful to run without listening to any music or podcasts to build higher levels of mental toughness and focus on being present during your run.
