Jury announced for Chamber comp. ■ Chamber Music Australia has annlounced that high profile local and international musicians will serve on the jury of the Asia-Pacific Chamber Music Competition, which will take place in Melbourne from July 8-14. Chamber musician and Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Wilma Smith, will chair the jury. Confirmed members of the jury are: Li-Wei Qin (cellist and guest professor at the Shanghai Conservatory and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing), Natsuko Yoshimoto (Concert Master of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra), and Euan Murdoch (cellist and CEO, Chamber Music New Zealand). “The jury of the 2013 Asia Pacific Chamber Music Competition gathers together remarkable performers, all of whom are well-known for their commitment to chamber music,” said Wilma Smith. “For a competition of this calibre the jury must not only be experienced chamber musicians but also represent a balance of the instruments in the competition. As Chair, my role is to support my colleagues to reach decisions in a timely and fair manner,” she said. The Asia-Pacific Chamber Music Competition is open to the best young piano trios and string quartets from the Asia-Pacific region and is presented by Chamber Music Australia in association with Melbourne Recital Centre. Significant cash prizes and performance opportunities in festivals and concert halls throughout Australia and Asia are offered to prize winners from wellrespected presenters such as Musica Viva Australia. The first round of the competition is a DVD audition for which entries must be received by Monday (Mar. 11). Following this, 12 ensembles (six piano trios, six string quartets) are invited to Melbourne to compete. Early rounds of the 2013 Asia-Pacific Chamber Music Competition will be held at the ABC Iwaki Auditorium in Southbank, Melbourne. Finals will be staged at Melbourne Recital Centre. The entire competition will be broadcast live on ABC Classic FM.

● Cameron Menzies ■ Opera is a world of drama, colour and exquisite gowns. So what better combination could there be than a night of opera sung by stars dressed in by the doyenne of the gowns, Melbourne fashion designer Linda Britten? As part of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival Cultural Program 2013, Linda Britten has joined with young Melbourne creative director, Cameron Menzies, to create Operette, an evening of high fashion and grand opera. Accompanied by the Melbourne Opera Orchestra, Operette will be performed at one of Melbourne’s homes of opera, the Athenaeum Theatre on Monday, March 18 at 8.15 pm. Operette is a 50-minute living tableau of gowns from Linda’s new Haute Couture 2013 Arts Decoratif collection, with popular arias from well-loved operas sung by principal artists sopranos Amelia Farrugia and Greta Bradman, with mezzo soprano Dimity Shepherd. They will be joined by up and coming Melbourne operatic talents Stacey Alleaume, Shauntai Batzke, Danielle Calder, Anna-Louise Cole, Angela Hogan and Janet Todd. Amelia Farrugia is familiar to Opera Australia audiences from her appearances as the title roles in The Merry Widow, and Massenet’s Manon, and has appeared throughout Australia in major soprano roles, including Eurydice in Orpheus In The Underworld, and Adele in Die Fledermaus. She also performed the role of Musetta in La Boheme for Opera Hong Kong, and has covered the role of Massenet’s Manon for the world famous Metropolitan Opera in New York. Amelia is currently performing in Falstaff for Opera Australia. Dimity Shepherd is one of Melbourne’s most popular mezzo-sopranos and has been nominated for a Green Room Award for her performance as Cherubino in Victorian Opera’s production of The Marriage Of Figaro. Last month Dimity had the joy of wearing two Linda Britten gowns on the one night in her role as Flora in Opera In The Park – La Traviata, directed by Cameron Menzies, who has also been nominated for a Green Room Award for Best Director for the opera Contact! Greta Bradman is a young soprano going places. As well as having several best selling Sony Classics CDs to her name, including an ARIA nomination, she is in demand on the concert platform, and has won numerous critics’ choice award, and was a 2012 Helpmann Award finalist. Greta has just won the 2013 Australian International Opera Award, which will take her to Cardiff to hone her impressive operatic skills under the guidance of international opera star Dennis O’Neill, at the Wales International Academy Of Voice. And for those who love a bit of music trivia, Linda Britten is distantly related to the major English composer Benjamin Britten, whose centenary of birth occurs this year. Tickets are priced at $38 and $15 concession and available from www.ticketek.com.au - Julie Houghton

ShowBiz!

■ Award-winning clown Joel Tito returns to present his solo Melbourne International Comedy Festival debut, The Trial and Death of Socrates (No Relation) from March 28 to April 21 at the Trades Hall – Bookshop. After performing in sell-out seasons in festivals around Australia as part of cult comedy troupe Vigilantelope, Joel took two years to develop his new show by studying clown under a Parisian psychopath and belting out enka classics alongside a Japanese juggernaut. Now back from his sojourn, he combines clowning, music, silence and singing in this darkly euphoric comic narrative. The Trial and Death of Socrates (No Relation) is a clown-based storytelling show that focuses on its silent central character - Socrates (no relation) - and his struggle against a disembodied yet distinctive voice who proclaims that by the end of the show, Socrates will be dead. What follows is a story of plagiarised manuscripts, nonsensical meditative practices, impossible love and an ever-present darkness

SATURN RETURNS

■ Billed as ‘an inter-galactic comedy cabaret confessional about one of life’s most terrifying times: Turning Thirty’, Saturn Returns is being presented at the newly located Butterfly Club from March 27-April 6. Simon Abrahams and Lachlan MacLeod perform 12 original songs in a carefully constructed 60-minute romp about coming of age, coming down to Earth and coming to terms with life when the planets don’t line up the way you have planned. Abrahams and MacLeod explore the astrological phenomenon of ‘Saturn returns’ – the 29½ years that it takes for Saturn to orbit the Earth. As Baby Boomers and Generation X’ers will know, turning 30 is commonly a time of turmoil, confusion and change as people ponder time, structure, responsibility, power and accomplishment – or lack thereof. For Generation Y who are living the experience right now, it is perfect fodder for cabaret. Saturn Returns is one of the first shows to play at the new Butterfly Club, which has retained its quirky, kitsch atmosphere following its move to the CBD, located upstairs in a laneway off Little Collins St, following the Club’s muchpublicised move from its former South Melbourne home.

Blue/Orange

● Kane Felsinger in Mockingbird Theatre’s Blue/Orange. Photo: Justin Stephens ■ Mockingbird Theatre aims to offer audiences text-based national and international plays, directed true to playwrights’ intentions. In founder/artistic director Chris Baldock’s words “Great plays , great actors, great stories.” They have set an ambitious program for 2013 starting with a play, Blue/Orange, about psychiatry and the myriad complications surrounding it. Two psychiatrists - one young, insecure, idealistic, ponderous; the other superior, nimble, ‘spin master’ - verbally slug out their perceived diagnoses of a psychotic black man. Blue/Orange (by Joe Penhall) is wordy, but fast, witty and irreligious. The conceit is that while agreeing with some of both psychiatrists’ arguments, we also see them as self seeking and arrogant, basically intent on furthering their own careers. Who is sane and who is not …? This is biting wit, with a fair nod to the ‘hippy’ psychiatrist of the 60s, R D Laing. Tightly directed by Chris Baldock, confidently performed by Kane Felsinger (just possibly dictator Idi Amin’s son …!), Christian Heath and Richard Edge you’ll laugh a lot, but you’ll also question what price sanity, perhaps even what IS sanity! Until March 9 at Broken Mirror Studios, Staley St, Brunswick. Tickets: $40/$35. Bookings: Trybooking.com or bookings@ mockingbirdtheatre.com.au - Review by Maggie Morrison

Observer Movies, DVDs Showbiz With Jim Sherlock and Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs

● Two time Oscar winner Ben Affleck behind the camera as director, as well as star, on the set of the Best Picture Academy award winning thriller ARGO, a ripping good yarn based on true events! FILM: ARGO: Genre: Drama/Histor/Thriller. Cast: Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Alan Arkin. Year: 2012. Rating: M. Running Time: 120 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **** Verdict: Following his acclaimed successes with 2007's Gone Baby Gone and 2010's The Town, director and star Ben Affleck has excelled all expectations with his 2013 Best Picture Oscar winning thriller Argo. Also starring John Goodman, Alan Arkin and Bryan Cranston in scene stealing roles, this is the thrilling dramatisation of a 1980 joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of revolutionary Iran disguised as a Hollywood film production crew. All the elements fall right into place, the excitement and humour, all with nail-biting precision, as it propels you energetically along, sweeping you off your feet as a result. A ripping good yarn! FILM: SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN: Genre: Documentary/Music/Biography. Cast: Sixto Rodriguez, Dennis Coffey, Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman. Year: 2012. Rating: M. Running Time: 86 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ****1/2 Verdict: Bigger than Elvis! It's hard to imagine, but true, in one part of the world anyway. This is a compelling feature length documentary that flows like an Agatha Christie mystery in the search for the missing link to one of music's long forgotten and most enigmatic talents, as two South Africans set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, and the mystery surrounding the disappearance of 1970's folk singer, Rodriguez. And the stunning soundtrack will have you racing to your local CD store, if they exist anymore. Quite a revelation! FILM: FRANKENWEENIE: Genre: Animated/Feature. Cast: Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Martin Landau. Year: 2012. Rating: PG. Running Time: 87 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: **** Verdict: Cult filmmaker Tim Burton has turned his 1984 short film of the same name into a feature animated film, and the results are a delight, albeit dark. Young boy Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face monstrous consequences. Like numerous previous efforts Burton draws on his boyhood horror influences, from the Frankenstein legend, Dracula and Vincent Price, to name a few, making the payoff inspirational! But don't blame me if you find your kids digging up your dog in the back yard one night. Martin Landau, Winona Ryder, Martin Short supply the voices. FILM: UNKNOWN CHAPLIN: Genre: Documentary/Comedy/Drama. Narrator: James Mason. Cast: Charles Chaplin, Geraldine Chaplin, Jackie Coogan. Year: 1983. Rating: G. Running Time: 156 Minutes. Format: DVD. Stars: ****½ Verdict: A superb and totally compelling documentary series that examines the film making methods and techniques of the legendary Charles Chaplin, an utterly fascinating documentary from award winning film historians Kevin Brownlow and David Gill that features never before seen out-takes from Chaplin's films, and other extraordinary rare footage, Unknown Chaplin gives a highly valuable insight into the creation of Chaplin's films and includes interviews with people who knew and worked with Chaplin, and accompanied by a standout music score by Carl Davis, including adaptations of Chaplin's classic music, if you love cinema, you will love and cherish this outstanding DVD.

THE THIEVES

■ (MA). 135 minutes. Available now on DVD and Blu-Ray. Clever in construction, confident in execution, this smashing heist movie is definitely one of the best examples of the genre. With its glamourous settings and colourful characters, this may be compared by some to Steven Soderbergh's empty Ocean's Eleven trilogy, but The Thieves is far superior on every level, keeping the audience involved right to the very end. The story centres on five conartists who, having just completed a daring swindle/robbery (and which gets the film off to a terrific start), receive a proposal that seems to good to refuse. The five, who have deliberately old-school, noir-style names (Popie, Pepsee, Chewingum, Yenicall, and Zampano), only have one major hesitation about this offer, and that it has been made by Macao Park, who doublecrossed two of their members years before. The item Park wants to steal is a 318-carat diamond worth $20 million, hidden in a heavily guarded casino. Arriving in Hong Kong, the group team up with four local thieves (Chen, Andrew, Jonny, and Julie), equally experienced and ready to face the impossible task at hand. As Macao Park divulges his meticulous plan, it soon becomes apparent that everyone has their own agenda. Like the best heist pictures of the past, such as Rififi (1955), Topkapi (1964), Gambit (1966), Space Travelers (2000), and Inside Man (2006), The Thieves has plot and characters that are always

● The star-studded cast from the blockbuster hit The Thieves. changing and turning, and while some of the twists can be predicted, there are more than enough story entanglements to keep audiences guessing. This has been called The Avengers of international cinema, and one can't doubt that claim with what is an amazing cast, all of whom get suitable screen time to bring their roles to life, and everyone is in excellent form. Unlike The Avengers however, which had all its characters' foundations laid down in six other movies, the writers here create their characters from scratch, and it is an absolute joy to see these fascinating if untrustworthy people evolve as the story unfolds, and the 135 minute running time goes pretty quickly. Beautifully shot, edited, and scored, with some eye-popping action scenes (one which occurs on the side of a building is a jawdropping combination of The Good, The Bad, The Weird and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), this is a supremely crafted, character-based thriller that is also filled with moments of perfectlytimed humour. The director seems to love the world of the con-artist, as displayed in his impressive earlier efforts The Big Swindle (2004) and Tazza: The High Rollers (2006), and The Thieves is his most accomplished film to date. RATING - ****½

THE INTOUCHABLES

■ (M). 112 minutes. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray on March 6. The award-winning French film that swept Europe (amassing over $380 million at the box-office) is now available to watch at home, and if its long run at Australian cinemas was any indication, then this unashamedly feel-good film should do very well on DVD and Blu-Ray as well. French star Francois Cluzet (who bears a striking similarity to actor Dustin Hoffman) stars as Philippe, a rich aristocrat who became a quadriplegic due to a terrible paragliding accident, and over the ensuing time has proven to be a troublesome patient for the numerous care-givers that have come and gone. During the latest interview process, mainly involving well-rehearsed college graduates, in walks Driss (Omar Sy), a young black immigrant who is just there to get a signature so he can get his unemployment benefits, and is very open in his criticism of Philippe's extravagant lifestyle. Taken aback by the sel-confident man's honesty but obvious lack of ambition, Philippe decides to hire Driss, despite the misgivings of his head nurse. Driss, who lives part-time with his hard-working mother and nu-

erous siblings, feels like he's entered a new world when he moves in, but soon discovers that the job is more demanding than first thought. The two, who don't like each other at first, begin to bond, establishing a friendship that will see them go through a number of highs and lows. Writer/directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano certainly follow a set formula (based on a true story), and the story goes exactly where you expect it to. What lifts the familiar story is the film-makers' sincere love for the material, and wanting to give the two main characters genuine life and energy, helped immeasurably by the wonderful performances of Cluzet and Sy. Both are allowed to make the roles their own, and they turn in vibrant, first-rate work (Sy actually beat Jean Dujardin for Best Actor at this year's French Academy Awards). The Intouchables is the best kind of mainstream entertainment, where cast and crew want to please an audience without condescending to them, delivering a crowdpleaser that is full of quality touches on both sides of the camera. A definite winner. RATING - ****

‘SONS OF SAM’ AT OAKLEIGH FEATURE SHOW ■ Carnival of Suburbia 2013 presents Sons Of Sun (The Sam Phillips Story) - a rock 'n' roll play, on Sunday (March 10) at the Caravan Club, 95-97 Drummond St, Oakleigh. Written by Kieran Carroll and based on an original idea by John Kennedy, Sons Of Sun (The Sam Phillips Story) tells the story of Memphis music in the 1950s, through the eyes of Sun Records founder, Sam Phillips. John Kennedy, of Love Gone Wrong, fronts the band playing early Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and many more, while Matt Charleston (Water Rats, Packed To The Rafters) heads the acting cast as Sam Phillips. Co-stars include Corinne Marie and Damian Sommerlad taking on multiple roles from Sam's assistant Marion Keisker to Howlin' Wolf. Internationally renowned director, Neil Gooding (Breast Wishes, Holding The Man, Gutenberg The Musical) seamlessly blends the narratives and songs to produce a compelling, original and heartbreaking blend of rock 'n' roll theatre. ● Sam Phillips of Sun Records

Wild rock ‘n’ roll play ■ Sons Of Sam - The Sam Phillips Story is a wild rock'n'roll play about Sun Records, Memphis, and the artists that started their careers there. Told through the character of its founder Sam Phillips, his assistant Marion Keisker, and the famous musicians that Sam recorded, the show features a three-piece live band fronted by John Kennedy, performing 31 songs from Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and many more. The pugnacious Sam Phillips is played by prolific Sydney actor, Matt Charleston, with co-stars Corinne Marie and Damian Sommerlad taking on multiple roles. John Kennedy began developing the Sons of Sun idea in 2011 with the release of his Sons of Sun Vol 1 CD. Award-winning Melbourne playwright Kieran Carroll (The Giraffe's Uncle, 3XY Or I Die!) has written an accompanying script to Kennedy's renditions. John has released many albums since the early 80s with his bands JFK and the Cuban Crisis, Love Gone Wrong and The '68 Comeback Special. He is responsible for the indie hits: Miracle In Marrickville, Big Country, and King St. Kieran's recent works include 3XY Or I Die! (Old Fitzroy Theatre), A Fitzroy Romance (La Mama Courthouse) and The Giraffe's Uncle (Newtown Theatre) with three new works to be staged in 2013. Neil is the author of Back To The 80s which is now produced hundreds of times around the world every year. In 2012, Matt performed in Helen Back and Hamlet both for Harlos Productions. Corinne's recent theatre credits include Frivolity At Fiveways (Furst Class Productions), Lucy Black (Subtlenuance Theatre) and The Farnsworth Invention (The New Theatre). Damian Sommerlad (narrator and all other male characters) recently returned from London where he graduated from East 15 Acting School. He recently shot WWI feature Forbidden Ground, due out later this year.

HERE’S ONE TO BEAT

■ Top galloper Moment of Change deserves to be favourite to take out the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington this Saturday. The talented galloper, prepared by master trainer Peter Moody, has done everything right in his lead up races to get the chocolates. Moment of Change was most impressive up the straight six with his good second to the mighty mare Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes. Raced by the Slade Bloodstock syndicate, they are very confident that this will be his year. I had a chat to Rob Slade, the manager of the syndicate, who is excited as to his preparation this time in. Moment of Change is by the former good South Australian galloper, Barely A Moment, who was trained by leading mentor, David Hayes. His second behind Black Caviar was his first run since September last year and took his record to five wins, a second and three thirds. The only time he blotted his copybook was when he finished well back behind the good mare, Mosheen, in the Rosehill Guineas. Rob, along with all the syndicate members, are quite confident that he can get the job done at Flemington in the Newmarket. He will start a short priced favourite in front of the flying Western Australian Barakey, who has won 11 on end

Barakey was favourite to win the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield, but knocked his head against the barrier stalls and was a late withdrawal. Later in the week he trialled well before Stewards to allow him to take his place in the Newmarket field. However it is a big ask, for a visitor to win first up on the tricky straight 1200 metre run. Likewise for his fellow ‘Sandgroper’, Luckygrey, a talented sprinter, but the straight run may find him out. Of the others the Queenslander who goes well down the straight, Spirit Of Boom, is a chance to run a place.

Australian Cup news ■ In the Australian Cup, the Melbourne Cup winner, Green Moon, is on top. A number of

racegoers knocked his first up run behind All Too Hard in the Futurity, but you have got to go back last year before the running of the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. His owner, the very astute and one of the best judges of horseflesh in the world, Lloyd Williams, said he was purely a handicapper not a weight for age horse. The Western Australian Mr Moet, a good stayer will be suited by the conditions and distance of the Australian Cup, and is very consistent. On the third line is the very good three-year old, Super Cool, prepared by top trainer Mark Kavanagh, and he gave the Australian Guineas against his own age a miss and dodge All Too Hard to concentrate on the Australian Cup. I was very impressed with the Victoria Derby win-

Racing Briefs

Sent forward to park ■ Local trainer David Lewis combined with nephew Zeb Lewis to land the Matthews Petroleum Pace for C4 & C5 class over 2160 metres at Hamilton with smart Art Major/Jolaura 4-Y0 entire Amajorjo. Taking a concession, Amajorjo was trapped three wide from gate six, before being sent forward to park outside the leader Jilliby Ablett from gate two. Controlling the race to a nicety, Amajorjo surged clear prior to the final bend, winning by an unextended 3.5 metres from Lifes A Bonus (one/one) and Radical Impact in a rate of 1-59.1 to chalk up his ninth success (eight this season) in 22 race appearances.

Nyah meeting at Swan Hill ■ The Nyah Harness Racing Club held a terrific meeting at the Swan Hill Racing Centre on Tuesday February 26, featuring four heats of the long standing Alabar Northern Region Championship for C1 & C2 class over 2240 metres with all winners being trained by Mildura's Shayne Cramp. Heat one was taken out by former Kiwi 4-Y0 gelding Washington Heritage in a rate of 2-00 even. Driven by Shayne, Washington Heritage (Washington Vc/Holmes Heritage) had little difficulty in leading from gate three, before coasting to the wire 6.6 metres in advance of Village Spirit out wide from last on the marker line, with Gotalotofspeed third after racing in the open.

Late split near post ■ The second and third heats went to 4-Y-0 Real Desire/A Little More Magic gelding Real Magic in a rate of 2-01.4 and 3-Y-0 Art Major/Caps Off gelding Major Capital in 1-59 both driven by Shayne. Spending most of the race parked outside stablemate Dream La Vita (gate three) which led easily, Real Magic (gate two) surged clear on straightening to just last by a half head over Classy Western (one/three - three wide last lap) which dropped in for a brief breather approaching the home turn, with Well Oiled Lombo close up in third place after trailing the weakening leader prior to gaining a late split in the shadows of the post.

Stable snares quinella ■ Major Capital from gate three scored in almost identical fashion to Real Magic after being poised one/one, with the polemarker Cinder Path leading for Malcolm O'Bree. Easing three wide on the final bend, Major Capital raced to the front on turning with stablemate Four Sisters after following him throughout issuing a strong challenge. Maintaining a margin all the way up the running, Major Capital had 1.4 metres to spare on the wire giving the stable the quinella, with Finedropofred third after trailing the pair.

This Week’s Meetings ■ Wednesday - Stawell/Kilmore, ■ Thursday - Geelong/Ouyen @ Mildura, ■ Friday - Melton, ■ Saturday - Bendigo, ■ Sunday - Wangaratta (Cup), ■ Monday - Warrnambool @ Terang, ■ Tuesday - Cranbourne.

Horses To Follow ■ The Binder, Star Style, Australian Bite, Glenferrie College, Misschinoise, Real Character, Rosharni.

THIRD INTER DOMINION WIN

■ A tremendous crowd was in attendance at Tabcorp Park Menangle (NSW) on Sunday (Mar. 3) to witness the running of Australasia's greatest harness event - the Inter Dominion Grand Final, sponsored by TAB.com.au, over the marathon trip of 3009 metres. The victor was Western Australian star Im Themightyquinn for the third successive year having won under controversial circumstances in Auckland in 2011 and Perth last year. With many knockers from the eastern seaboard questioning his past performances this side of the Nullarbor, trainer Gary Hall and reinsman son Gary (Jnr) had a point to prove and what a point it was when the eight-year-old gelded son of Washington Vc and Love Sign ran out an outstanding winner. Taken back to the rear of the field from gate six with the pole marker Mah Sish easing off the back of the leader Chariot King (gate four) to assume control racing into the back straight on the first occasion in a brilliant tactical drive by Anthony Butt aboard the A.G. Hunter Cup winner. The equal favourite Terror To Love (gate seven) was eased at the start, but was quick to move forward mid-race trailing Excell Stride three wide to settle in the open at the bell. When Mach Alert commenced a forward move three wide in the final circuit, Im Themightyquinn immediately latched to his back gaining a lovely ride home. Making the final bend very wide, Im Themightyquinn ($3.20) showed his customary acceleration in the long straight to record a four metre victory over a game Mah Sish ($6.60), with Excel Stride ($15.70) a half neck away in third place 2.5 metres in advance of Terror To Love ($3.20) and Caribbean Blaster. With a final half mile of 55 seconds and a quarter of 26.5, Im Themightyquinn recorded a mile rate of 158.1 which will stand as a race and track record as it was the first time that a pacers’ race had been held over the journey.

Visitor wins ■ Well performed 4-Y0 Monarchy/Juverna gelding Duke Of The Moment scored a first up Australian victory in heat three of the prestigious Tontine Trotters Series for T0 or better class over 2660 metres at Hamilton on Monday February 25. Sent over to Dean Braun at Lara by trotting ‘maestro’ Phil Williamson with the Tontine Series the main objective, Duke Of The Moment first up since August last year with Chris Alford in the sulky began brilliantly from the 20 metre mark avoiding several gallopers shortly after the start to lead running into the first turn. Rated to perfection, Duke Of The Moment coasted to the wire 3.4 metres in advance of the 50 metre backmarker Jarvsofax and Ainthatalrightmacca in a rate of 205.9 and is sure to one of the favourites in this Friday's $20,000 Final at Tabcorp Park Melton.

Sprint lane ■ Visiting Mount Gambier trainers are regular winners at Hamilton after crossing the border and it was no different on Monday with David Drury snaring a stable double Mickie Drippin the Bendigo Bank 3-Y-0 Pace and Alta Antonio the Kitset Kitchens Pace for C1 class and David Phillips the Alexandra House Pace for C1 class with Mister Huxtable. Mickie Drippin, a gelded son of Elsu and Infinate Dream, broke his maiden status at start number 13 after spending most of the race three back in the moving line from gate three on the second line over the 2180 metre journey.

Held up momentarily in the final circuit, Mickie Drippin made the final bend five wide, before motoring home at a great rate to blouse Soho Jolie (outside leader Lombo Krista Bella) last lap by a neck in 1-58.9, with I Want Candy using the sprint lane off the back of the pacemaker a further neck away in third place.

Consistent ■ New Zealand bred 4Y-0 Grinfromeartoear/ Sand Skipper gelding Alta Antonio has raced consistently all season in both Victoria and Mount Gambier and was rewarded with his eigth success in 25 outings. Taking a concession for Terang's Tim McLean, Alta Antonio from inside the second line settled in a tight pocket three back the markers. Extricated into the clear to be three wide on the home turn in the 1660 metre dash, Alto Antonio picked up the leader Amajorfrost in a stride to score by 3.3 metres running away, with Lot Of Lip running on late from mid-field for third. The mile rate 1-56.

Tricky time ■ Mister Huxtable has been to Hamilton on numerous occasions with his latest victory being there in October 2011. Driven by Matt Craven, Mister Huxtable a 7-Y-0 gelding by Wilcos Cosby from Miss Becky Lee was given a sweet passage from gate two trailing the heavily supported pacemaker and favourite Foldem inside him over the 1660 metre journey, before using the sprint lane to gain a half head margin in a tricky finish.

■ In-form 4-Y-0 Life Sign/Warm Wishes gelding Oneonthewood taking a concession for Ouyen's Simon Jardine greeted the judge in the fourth heat after a charmed one/one trip from gate four trailing the favourite Itsnewstome with stablemate Huchi Fella leading from gate three. Held in a tight pocket approaching the home turn, Oneonthewood gained a late split to register a 1.4 metre margin from a game Itsnewstome in 1-58.6. Maria Caterina ran home from last off a three wide trail to be four wide on the home turn in finishing third for local trainer Michael Cirillo.

Brilliant start for Mick ■ Ararat trainer/driver Michael Bellman is a regular competitor at most Nyah meetings and snared the 1st Heat of the Ray & Grace Hepworth Memorial 3-Y-0 Pace over 2240 metres with Dawn Ofa New Day/Fake Trick gelding Witzend. Beginning brilliantly from outside the front row, Witzend coming off a last start second to Glenferrie Rustler in the Mt Gambier Derby on February 16, led throughout to score from White Sands (one/two - three wide last lap) and Carramar Chief (one/one) in a mile rate of 159.6.

Cramp disqualified ■ Elation turned to devastation when Victoria's leading harness racing trainer (Mildura based) Shayne Cramp was disqualified for a six month period at the conclusion of the Nyah Harness meeting held at Swan Hill on Tuesday February 26. The disqualification relates to an incident at a Mildura meeting a few weeks back. Shayne had been on top of the world after providing the four legs of the TAB quaddie at the Swan Hill fixture earlier in the night. In all probability an immediate appeal will be pending.

Down came the rain ■ The two Victorian harness meetings scheduled for Wednesday February 27 came to a sudden halt due to torrential rain coming down in bucket loads. At Yarra Valley during the day five of the seven races were held, while at Shepparton in the evening only two races took place. Melton husband and wife John and Maree Caldow brought up two wins in succession with 5-Y-0 Dream Vacation/Skye Rocket gelding Mister Scorcher at Yarra Valley, taking out the www.choicehotels.com.au Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2150 metres. Coming from the 30 metre mark with no runners off the front line, Mister Scorcher who has always shown plenty of talent stepped cleanly to settle three back in the moving line, with the 40 metre backmarker Keystone Blues beginning brilliantly to lead on the first turn. Easing three wide in the final circuit to lead on turning, Mister Scorcher recorded a comfortable 3.1 metre victory in advance of Keystone Blues in a mile rate of 2-04, with Regal Equation (one/one) third.

Could not cross roughie ■ Rockbank trainer Anthony Spiteri's ultra consistent Art Major/Galleons Bud colt Major Calipso chalked up his fourth victory in 27 outings (14 placings), when greeting the judge in the St Patrick Day @ Yarra valley Vicbred Pace for C0 class over 1650 metres. Driven once again by Nathan Jack, Major Calipso from gate two couldn't cross the roughie Regal Theory inside him as the start was effected, racing in the open until the bell when he strode clear.

It’s Time Today I am 55 ... where has time gone? In real terms I am past the half way mark, so I ask myself what have I done with this gift - caled time - I have been given? What I haven’t used properly is gone forever. What I have used wisely will last forever. So I have to admit I am mainly of the former ... maybe it’s time to wake up! How much time I have left, only God knows, but as sure as the nose on my face, it’s time to wake up to the fact that time stops for no-one ... so think real carefully now, maybe it’s time I stop for a brief moment for time and ponder, and seriously consider that time is the only thing in this life that is not negotiable. I run many businesses and in many cases, sometimes I may lose a 100 or even a 1000 dollars in a day, but fortunately on the next day i make a 100 or 1000 [ i hope!] It may even be like last week where I have my shop flooded and I lose thousands of dollars of stock and cry deeply for my loss. But then I wake up to the fact that it’s NOT worth crying tears for the mere loss of a few dollars. But I should be crying oceans of tears for the time I lost which I will never, never be able to replace ... nor will you for that matter ... come to think of it, nor can anyone, even with an ocean full of dollar coins, be able to buy one minute of time ... so why, why, why on earth do I strive for that which will not last? For the bigger house, for the better car, for the longer holiday, for those extra savings in the bank, that when I come to the end of my time, will amount to a huge big fat zero of good to me. Why, why indeed? Well it’s time for a wake-up call indeed and decide to value this small window of opportunity that God has given me called time. Above all else, whether you are of one religious persuasion or other matters little, but most people with any sense, realise that this life is not all there is, and realise that there must be something else.something else over and above our simple understanding of this little speck in the whole universe called earth that we tiny little beings called humans live in, and some of us think stupidly that we know it all. Well, I for one sure know stuff all, but let me tell you I am happy to know the one that knows all stuff! So in the whole scheme of things I will endeavour to use the little fraction of time He grants me to invest it in endeavours that will have an eternal significance ... so for me anyhow I have to say that TIME to me is nothing more than TEMPORARILY INTERUPTING MY ETERNITY. I trust for you to as you come to realise that this short window of opportunity, called time, God has given you as well is all you will ever have to work out your eternal destiny!
