This Year’s Ashes
● Jeremy Stanford (Brian) and Rosie Lockhart (Ellen) in This Year’s Ashes at Red Stitch Theatre. Photo: Jodie Hutchinson ■ Although a little long at two hours, Jane Bodie’s This Year’s Ashes is cleverly constructed, and Red Stitch Theatre’s Victorian premiere production makes excellent use of their small stage area to present this unravelling romantic comedy with tragicomic undertones . Making a bed has rarely had more impact than here, where an “envelope corner” can suggest a different owner or lover, and the pillows are moved to different ends to show time pass or guest change – inventive linen choreography! Even for non cricket tragics the interweaving of the intricacies of Test cricket with the vagaries of grief is clear, wry and downright funny. Father Jeremy Stanford’s patient instructions to daughter Ellen (Rosie Lockhart) work particularly well as they bowl and position themselves in the great tradition of Test cricket, delighting in the nuances of thrill and pain. Throughout childhood Ellen and her father had devoured radio broadcasts of Test matches , and now , struggling in a soulless job in a new city, her vivid remembrance of those bonding days ultimately awakens her imagination to allow friendship to salvage her future. That future had seemed locked in a cage of alcohol, one night stands , depression and isolation from anything outside her bleak apartment. Semi nudity and coarse language are a considerable part of this production, and in an intimate theatre these may confront some. But balancing is our proximity to Ellen’s pain and numbness after each desperate one night stand. Daniel Frederiksen’s role as multiple lovers captures the absurdity of some sexual encounters wonderfully, and after a rather jerky start this work grew in poise and carried the comedy of this wry romance , riddled with pithy one liners, enjoyably. Season: Until April 19 Venue: Red Stitch Theatre, Rear 2 Chapel St, St Kilda. Bookings: 9533 8082 or http://redstitch.net/ Tickets: $20-$39 - Maggie Morrison
● Julia Harper as the Princess of Monte Carlo ■ The final collaboration of one of the most famous double acts in music history is something to interest most music lovers. The double act in question is Gilbert and Sullivan, and that collaboration is The Grand Duke, written in 1896. This charming work isn't performed as often as their betterknown works, so the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria is bringing it to life at the Alexander Theatre over two weekends, with performances on April 5, 11 and 12 at 8pm as well as matinees at 2pm on April 5 and 12. Ludwig, an actor, decides to replace his company manager, Ernest, and then the miserly Grand Duke Rudolph of Pfennig Halbpfenning by supposedly killing them in two statutory duels. Which means he assumes all their rights and obligations, including more wives than he knows what to do with. The fun of the plot is resolved with the usual twists and turns of Gilbert and Sullivan topsy turveydom. The Society has assembled a strong cast of experienced and talented Gilbert and Sullivan performers, with the title role of Rudolph, the Grand Duke, being played by Peter Hanway, and the wonderfully named Ernest Dummkopf being sung by William James Smith. The central role of Ludwig is taken by Paul Tooby, with Jamie Moffat as the Prince of Monte Carlo. Equally strong are the ladies of the cast, with Julia Harper as the Princess of Monte Carlo, mezzo-soprano Jenny Wakefield as Baroness Von Krakenfeldt, Lydia Kovesi as Julia Jellicoe and Bernadette Mether as Lisa, leading a large and enthusiastic cast, directed by Richard Burman with musical direction from John Ferguson. As a bonus offer to introduce youngsters to Gilbert and Sullivan, one child will be admitted with every full paying adult at the matinees. Bookings: www.monash.edu.au/mapa or 9905 1111.
Gentlemen Of Deceit ■ From Page 8 All deceit delivered with such accomplishment, style and humour can be forgiven, as these three clever young magicians ensure enjoyable, awesome entertainment suitable for audiences ranging from sophisticated appreciators of magic to young audiences aged ten and over. Performances: April 3-5, 10 - 12 and April 19 at 7.30pm. Venue: Spring Street Conference Centre, 1 Spring St.. Bookings: comedyfestival.com.au or 1300 762 344.
● Chelsea Gibb ■ A new Australian musical with bite and humour is about to take off at St Kilda's Theatreworks on April 10. DreamSong' is a satirical look at religious excess and where it may lead. The story follows an evangelical mega church, DreamSong, and its appropriately named pastor, Richard Sunday. Unfortunately, the church has lost millions in the Global Financial Crisis and Pastor Sunday decides to stage the second coming and market him as a Christian pop star to solve the money problems. With a premise like this, it isn't for the faint hearted, but is certainly at the cutting edge of Australian theatre and has some fabulous music and humour to keep the audience engaged. Written by a new young creative team, Hugo Chiarella and Robert Tripolino, it is being directed by the talented Dean Bryant, with choreography buy Andrew Hallsworth. Both men are well known for their work on Pirates of Penzance and The Producers (Bryant) and Priscilla, Queen of the desert and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To the Forum (Hallsworth). Leading the cast is Chelsea Gibb, who wowed audiences in Chicago and The King And I, as Whitney Sunday, wife of Pastor Richard, played by Ben Prendergast from Red Stitch Actors' Theatre. DreamSong was workshopped and developed at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2010 and has been refined and is now ready to take on the world. Catch DreamSong at Theatre Works, 14 Acland St, St Kilda from April 10-20 except Mondays. Bookings on 9534 3388 or at www.theatreworks.org.au - Julie Houghton

■ Pat La Manna, Executive Producer and founder of the Melbourne Passion Play, has a big dilemma – this year he has been unable to secure the services of a donkey and pigeons for this iconic outdoor event. How can one stage a Passion Play at Easter without a donkey to carry Jesus in his triumphant entry into the holy city of Jerusalem and pigeons flying in the air? For the past 17 years, a group of 70 or so volunteers from all walks of life, together with a real live donkey and pigeons, have come together to be directed to re-enact the last days of Jesus Christ on earth, and to perform the now famous Melbourne Passion Play. Unfortunately the donkey used in the past is now getting too old and decided to quit, and the pigeons followed the donkey’s lead. Pat says that ironically the cast, crew and management team of the Passion Play are all volunteers who freely give of their time and talent, but the donkey was the only one getting paid to perform. “That’s asinine gratitude for you ...” Jokes aside, Pat is desperately in need of at least a donkey for this production, so if anyone has a donkey or knows of one wishing to become a Passion Play star, please call secretary Dawn urgently on 0411 957 164. This free production takes place in the open, in the picturesque surroundings at Ruffey Lake Park, Doncaster for one performance only on Palm Sunday (April 13) at 1.30pm. This year there will be no performance on Good Friday. For more information visit the website www.passion play.info - Cheryl Threadgold
■ Chrissie Swan and Jane Hall (Mix 101.1 Breakfast) were profiled by The Age’s Neil McMahon last week. ■ If Smooth 91.5 did not announce themselves as having “less talk” four times every hour, they would save 70,080 words in a year. ■ Radio industry is abuzz with news of Dene Broadbelt, 21, who tried to set up a Darwin festival. He has worked briefly in radio in Dubbo, Goulburn and Broome.
Lachlan moves on ■ Nova Entertainment boss Lachlan Murdoch (Smooth 91.5 and Nova 100) has quit his position as Network 10 Chairman, as he becomes Non-Executive Chairman of News Corp. His ongoing involvement with TV (8.8 per cent ownership of the Ten Network), radio (Nova/Smooth) and press comes as the Australian Federal Government examines changing media law.
■ Country Crossroads columnist Rob Foenander is on sick leave this week. We expect he will return in next week’s Melbourne Observer (Apr. 9).

● Keith and Angela McGowan, Rick Milne ● One of the program segments that most annoyed interstate listeners to 3AW’s Overnight program was the local Antiques And Collectables Show hosted by Andrew McLaren. The show, which runs from midnight-2am, on Friday mornings includes panellists Rick Milne and Tony Shields. The Australia Overnight program (minus the A&C Show) continues on stations in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra, plus regional oulets, with John Lawssoundalike Mike Jeffreys. McLaren, and on-air partner Mark Petkovic, are now heard on 3AW only. Rick Milne (right) starting appearing on the Antiques and Collectables Show when it was hosted by the late Keith McGowan. Keith, wife Angela and Rick Milne are pictured at the McGowan’s wedding at Moama-Echuca in 2006. Keith told Radio Confidential that once he retired from radio in 2011 he had lost all contact with Milne. Likewise, 3AW Nightline co-host Bruce Mansfield lost regular contact with Rick Milne. They had appeared together in a weekly segment on Bert Newton’s Good Morning Australia.

The second radio ratings survey results for the year will be released on Thursday, April 24, just prior to the ANZAC Day holiday. Luke Bona from 2CC Canberra has been appointed as the new host of Australia Overnight on Fairfax Radio stations 2UE, 4BC (not 3AW) and network stations. Bona was signed as 2CC morning host in November last year, reports Greg Newman of Jocks Journal. Nova Entertainment (Nova 100, Smooth 91.5) has an nounced the appointment of Claire Marshall to the new position of Music Marketing Director. 3AW and Magic 1278 will again partner with the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
■ The programming lunacy continues at Melbourne fine music station, 3MBS-FM. The station has spent decades building the goodwill of programs such as Henry Sachwald’s Theatretrack, which been broadcasting for more than 30 years on Thursday nights. Yet, bedazzled by technology that it can also broadcast online, the MBS programmers make Theatretrack unavailable for online listeners. Whilst their computer screens show the tracks being played by Sachwald, last Thursday had listeners listening to Nanki-Poo in Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado in a program called World of Operetta. ■ And while we’re talking about 3MBS-FM ... thank goodness the Schubert Marathon is a finished symphony concluding on Sunday (Mar. 30). The station has been promoting this event since before Christmas. Thta is more than three months of tease.

● Bryony Kimmings and niece Taylor Houchen in Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model at Theatre Works until April 6. ■ Remember Girl Power? What does feminism look like in the 21st century? What does it look like to a nine-year-old girl? Is it Miley Cyrus famously twerking in a latex bikini? Or Katy Perry singing about being a boy’s teenage dream? Despite Disney’s endless parade of princesses and fairytale castles, the grown-up world is a very different place. There is no guarantee that a prince will ride by as performance, artist Bryony Kimmings tells us. Galvanised by a Stanford University study that uncovered the disturbing result that the number one attribute tweenage girls desire is to be famous, the show is an evolution of Kimmings’s growing understanding of what the world looks like to a nine-yearold girl. It also reflects on Kimmings’s own awareness on being part of the problem; a self-obsessed model of adult womanhood seen through the eyes of her nine-year-old niece Taylor Houchen. In one of its more disturbing scenes, Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model explores the dark side of the sexualisation of tweenage girls as Kimmings and Houchen perform the same suggestive dance routine. Kimmings and Houchen embark on their own personal crusade against growing up too fast. Decidedly unimpressed by the role models offered by popular culture Kimmings and Houchen decide to create their own. The first palaeontologist pop star, Catherine Bennett, is born. A superstar role model who likes eating funnyshaped vegetables and dressing up as animals, octopuses and Victorian boys. Fast, funny and clever, the performance never feels earnest or preachy. Instead it is thoughtful and provocative and told with equal amounts of humour, music, dance, monologue and soliloquy with a bit of audience participation thrown in as well. Maybe dinosaur-loving, tuna pasta-eating Catherine Bennett can spread a new message about feminism and make it cool. Performance Season: Until April 6 Times: April 2 – 5 at 7.30pm, April 6 at 5pm Venue: Theatre Works, 14 Acland St, St Kilda. Movies, DVDs With Jim Sherlock and Aaron Rourke
What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs ● James Corden gives a standout performance as Britain's Got Talent sensation Paul Potts in the poignant and uplifting British comedy drama One Chance. FILM: ONE CHANCE: Genre: Biographical/Comedy/Drama. Cast: James Corden, Julie Walters, Colm Meaney, Alexandra Roach. Year: 2013. Rating: PG. Running Time: 103 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***½ Verdict: Delightful, simple and engrossing journey based on the true life struggles of Paul Potts, a bullied and accident prone schoolboy and later shop assistant who has a passion for opera, and after successful audition for 'Britain's Got Talent', he becomes a global phenomenon with his rendition of Puccini's classic "Nessun Dorma", which he ultimately wins. James Corden is wonderful as Paul Potts, as are Julie Walters and Colm Meany as his parents, and all the singing vocals from Potts himself. 'One Chance' pushes all the right buttons along the way, a finely tuned, funny and poignant story with its heart firmly in the right place, joining other standout British films like 'Billy Elliot,' 'Little Voice' or 'Brassed Off. This is a chance well worth taking! FILM: THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE: Genre: Action/Fantasy/Adventure/Drama. Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland. Year: 2013. Rating: M. Running Time: 146 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: *** Verdict: Our futuristic protagonists Katniss and Peeta from the 2012 blockbuster The Hunger Games are back, and this time become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death in which two teenagers from each of twelve Districts are chosen at random to compete. In this second instalment Katnis must endure the same again, during which a rebellion is ignited in the Districts. Based on the best-selling novels by Suzanne Collins, this delicately emulates Japan's 2000 brutal blockbuster Battle Royale and 1932's The Most Dangerous Game along with computerized scope of Hollywood's epics of the past. Jennifer Lawrence is captivating to watch as our heroine Katniss, as she tries to defy the evil and manipulative Capital heads, superbly played by Donald Sutherland and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, but the end result is a genuinely exciting, if not a bit cheesy at moments, pure pop culture escapism. FILM: THE COUNSELOR: Genre: Crime/Drama/Thriller. Cast: Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz. Year: 2013. Rating: MA15+. Running Time: 117 Minutes. Format: DVD and BLU-RAY. Stars: ***. Verdict: The Counselor is set around the troubled Juarez, Mexico/Texas border and tells the story of a lawyer finds himself in over his head in serious problems when he gets involved in drug trafficking the consequences. Helmed by legendary filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott, this is the first direct-to-the-screen story by author Cormac McCarthy, who's previous work as an author includes the dark and brooding 2007 Coen Brothers multi Oscar winning thriller No Country For Old Men and 2009's post-apocalyptic drama The Road starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron. So based on those two previous efforts alone, and with Sir Ridley Scott at the helm and a cast in fine form, here is a unique journey into dark, brutal, troubled and unexpected waters . FILM: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW: Genre: Comedy/Musical. Cast: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien. Year: 1975. Rating: M. Running Time: 96 Minutes. Format: DVD & BLU-RAY. Stars: **** Verdict: Outrageously funny and whimsical musical-comedy of a newly engaged couple who end up in an isolated Transylvanian area and stumble into a bizarre residence on a rainy night after their car breaks down. This is a wonderfully unique, quirky, pulse pounding and totally over-the-top homage to those great classic 'old dark house' movies, brimming with energetic music numbers and a host of colourful characters, most notably the scene-by-scene stealing Tim Curry as the hungry for love transvestite, Dr. Frank N. Furter, and the beautiful Susan Sarandon is also a standout in one of her first big screen starring roles. This is not a masterpiece in the league of Showboat, Fiddler On The Roof, The Wizard of Oz or Singin' in The Rain, but it's just as memorable and great fun from beginning to end!
James Rebhorn September 1, 1948 - March 21, 2014 ■ Reliable, prolific character actor James Rebhorn, who became a familiar face with many movie goers for more than 30 years, sadly succumbed to melanoma on Friday March 21, aged 65. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mr Rebhorn worked with a who's-who of Hollywood, both in front of and behind the camera. From directors such as Ridley Scott, Brian DePalma, Anthony Minghella, Mike Nichols, David Fincher, Peter Yates, Todd Haynes, Paul Verhoeven, Michael Cimino and Australian directors George Miller and Scott Hicks, to actors of the likes of Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Julianne Moore, Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon, Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas, Mickey Rourke, Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, Mr Rebhorn has built up the kind of resume most actors only dream of. The list is impressive, whether it be film or TV - here is a fraction: The Yum-Yum Girls (1976); He Knows You're Alone (1981), featuring the film debut of Tom Hanks; Silkwood (1983); Stephen King's Cat's Eye (1985) with James Woods; North And South (1985); Kane And Abel (1985); Kojak : The Price Of Justice (1987); The House On Carroll Street (1988); The Equalizer (1986 and 1988); Heart Of Midnight (1988); Desperate Hours (1990); Regarding Henry (1991); opposite Woody Allen in Shadows And Fog (1991); Basic Instinct (1992); My Cousin Vinny (1992); White Sands (1992), directed by Roger Donaldson; Scent Of A Woman (1992); Lorenzo's Oil (1992); Carlito's Way (1993); Guarding Tess (1994) with Nicolas Cage; I Love Trouble (1994); White Squall (1996) starring Jeff Bridges; Up Close And Personal (1996); Independence Day (1996); The Game (1997); From The Earth To The Moon
● James Rebhorn (1998); Seinfeld (1998); Snow Falling On Cedars (1999); The Talented Mr Ripley (1999); The Adventures Of Rocky And Bullwinkle (2000); the mega-hit comedy Meet The Parents (2000); Far From Heaven (2002); Cold Mountain (2003); Bernard And Doris (2006); Law And Order (1992 to 2008); Boston Legal (2008); The International (2009) starring Clive Owen; The Box (2009); 30 Rock (2010); Reel Steal (2011); Blue Bloods (2012) with Tom Selleck; Coma (2012); The Good Wife (2013); Enlightened (2013); and White Collar (2009 to 2013). Mr Rebhorn's last film appearance is in Before I Sleep (2013), and his last TV appearance is as Frank Mathison in Homeland (2011-2013). It is an effort just to sort through some of Mr Rebhorn's credits and the star power he has worked with. The fact that he was cast so often in so many high-profile productions showed that he could definitely hold his own against his more well-known peers, providing the kind of presence and quality support that will be sorely missed. - Aaron Rourke
Ernest and Celestine ■ (G). 80 minutes. Opens in selected cinemas on April 3. Based on the beloved books by Gabrielle Vincent, this deceptively simple and gorgeously animated film proves to be utterly charming, and should win over audiences both young and old. The story centres on Ernest, a big brown bear who makes a marginal existance as a street musician, and lives in a ramshackle hut on the outskirts of town; and Celestine, a young orphan mouse who is ridiculed and shunned by others because she can't understand why bears and mice, whose worlds are kept separate and closed-off, cannot live in harmony together. When the mouse community finds out that Celestine has helped and befriended Ernest, she is labeled a criminal, so she escapes to the bear's simple abode, where the two learn true friendship and respect for one another. What could have become a heavyhanded message movie is instead treated with genuine care and intelligence by directors Benjamin Renner, Vincent Patar and Stephane Aubier,
and screenwriter Daniel Pennac, who allow the two title characters' personalities to shine through in a distinct and lovable manner. The themes inherent in the story then naturally surface and develop, making for a much more satisfying narrative. Lambert Wilson's deep voice is perfect for Ernest, and Pauline Brunner perfectly captures Celestine's innocence and quest for kindness. The animation is superb, wonderfully recreating the pastel colours and visuals of a classic children's book, helping tap into the child within us all, and is an absolute joy on the eyes. Nominated for Best Animated Film at this year's Academy Awards, Ernest and Celestine, like its fellow Oscar nominee The Wind Rises, is beautiful, memorable viewing, and is superior to the film that won, Frozen. Firstrate family entertainment. Note : If the English dubbed version is screened, voices will be provided by Forest Whitaker, Mackenzie Foy, Lauren Bacall, Paul Giamatti and William H Macy. RATING - ****. - Aaron Rourke

Oliver!
● Fintan McCrave is rehearsing for Oliver! ■ Oliver! comes to the Frankston Arts Centre stage in June, and PLOS Musical Productions welcomes 11-year-old Fintan McCrave to the lead role of Oliver. Last year Fintan played the lead role in his school production of Aladdin and caught the performing bug. He is thrilled to have been successful in being offered the chance to take on another role, this time on a much larger stage. Fintan’s character Oliver is the young orphan who has the gall to ask for more to eat, sending him on a journey through the streets of London. He meets with the Artful Dodger and masterful Fagin who teaches him to become a successful pickpocket, as well as meeting other characters along the way. Fintan says he is enjoying the challenges of portraying the character and working with many PLOS favourites from previous productions, including Mike Fletcher as the conniving Fagin and Elise Stevens portraying the warm-hearted Nancy. The PLOS Musical Productions season of Oliver! can be seen on stage in June at the Frankston Arts Centre, with tickets now on sale www.plos.asn.au

● Matilda Reed in Dropped at La Mama Courthouse until April 6. ■ Dropped is playing at La Mama, back in its second incarnation after a highly commended season at the 2013 Fringe Festival. Written by Katy Warner and directed by Prue Clark, this is a clever, stark and bewildering play. It evokes in the audience a sense of unease brilliantly offset by the dark and sometimes unexpected humour. In an imperceptible landscape of snow (or ash), two female soldiers have been ordered to guard a base, with nothing but their imaginations, questionable memories and an empty bottle of vodka between them and a terrible reality. This reality is hinted at but, like shifting sands or a nightmare, never quite grasped. The effect is intentionally disorientating for the audience, but it is a disorientation which has been well handled. The play has an inner-coherence and stays true to itself, through the use of repetition in the razor-sharp dialogue and an all-pervasive sound and lighting design. These elements combine to create a tension which holds tight from the outset and like a ticking bomb doesn’t let up until the final bows. The acting by Brigid Gallacher and Matilda Reed is natural and accomplished, likewise Prue Clark ‘s direction is superb, present in every detail and yet not intrusive. In the program Katy Warner writes that she wants the audience to go home and “wonder and think and argue about Dropped”, in this I’m sure she will succeed. Dropped is a complex and thought provoking play and lingers in the mind. A highly worthwhile theatre going experience. Season: Until April 6 Times: Wed, Sun 6:30pm, Thu, Fri, Sat 7:30pm Venue: La Mama Courthouse, 349 Drummond St, Carlton Tickets: $25 Full, $15 Concession Bookings: www.lamama.com.au or 03 9347 6142 - Review by Catherine McGrgeor

Temporary fix to the Hird dilemma ■ Thank heavens the Essendon/ Hird/AFL/Demetriou saga has been ‘TEMPERORARILY’ resolved and James Hird will coach the Dons next year. Why emphasise the word ‘temporarily’? Because my experience tells me the ego-driven whistleblowers will always be lurking around to contact their ‘media mogul’ friends to provide another exclusive. And no responsibility whether it is ‘fact or fiction’ based. Those who confidently predicted Essendon would sack Hird have not admitted they were wrong. But that’s the way they work. They were right about hastening Andrew Demetriou’s retirement. At first I was disappointed because he would not be around in 2016 to see his dream become reality. But who can blame him. Achievers rise above jealous hacks and concentrate on family and the next challenge. The next leak will concern ASADA and its veiled, intimidatory threats on Essendon and for that matter NRL club Cronulla. Essendon and James Hird will suffer spiteful comments from prejudice opposition in the immediate future.
Tired of saga ■ I’m tired of the ASADA saga and wish ASADA would either “put up or shut up!
It reopens the ‘can of worms’ which I believe has been built on mischievous rumours, half truths, broken confidentiality conversations between former trusted friends, designed to gain exclusive media releases to destroy the integrity of the game you and I love. If there are legitimate charges to answer ASADA must bring them on so the parties involved can defend themselves. Let’s put an end to this festering, putrid, sore eating into our game. I want to watch football – not ego driven exclusives.
Harry Beitzel www.squidoo.com/harrybeitzel It was dramatically resurrected for a second time this year by James Hird’s wife Tania. I have often over the years in my columns praised James Hird and said how proud his parents must feel to have him as a son. I now comment because I have backed him, Essendon, Andrew Demetriou against the ASADA allegations from day one, February 7 last year. I am concerned about the timing of Tania’s latest TV appearance.
Free kicks ■ There were less free-kicks awarded as umpires and players adjust to the new interpretations especially to holding your position in marking situations and at ball-ups and boundary throw-ins. Frees for shepherding and holding the ball are a rarity which results in the perfect tackle going unrewarded in preference to the ball rolling out. It took until the last half of most games for the umpires and ruckmen to forget the ‘one metre apart’ rule so the ‘big men wrestle’ was allowed. Two other factors reduced the free-kick count. First was the anxiety for umpires to keep the ball moving at ALL times, avoid packs, so throws and dubious handballs were allowed or a quick “throw-up” is whistled.
This Week ROUND3 Friday, April 4 Hawthorn vs. Fremantle (MCG) (N) Saturday, April 5 Western Bulldogs vs. Richmond (ES) Adelaide Crows vs. Sydney Swans (AO) Gold Coast Suns vs. Brisbane Lions (MS) (T) Collingwood vs. Geelong Cats (MCG) (N) West Coast Eagles vs. St Kilda (PS) (N) Sunday, April 6 GWS Giants vs. Melbourne (GS) North Melbourne vs. Port Adelaide (ES) (T) Essendon vs. Carlton (MCG) (N) Secondly the coaches with their regular game-changes factics from packed defence, boundary-line to corridor have now succumbed to unadulterated speed at all costs. Which means tearaway, jet propelled sprints of 25 to 30 metres before a bounce and no free, then a foottap of 10 metres paid as a mark. The rule states the ball must be bounced and kicked at least 15 metres. I would increase both to 20 metres. - Harry Beitzel

Paw Licking takes Gold Cup in the wet ■ Top Victorian chaser Paw Licking ventured north for the Maitland Gold Cup series, breaking the track record in the Heat before winning the Final last Thursday night (Mar. 27). The race was over after a few strides as the Kel and Jackie Greenough trained star worked to the front from box eight and controlled the race in front. Paw Licking has now won the Hobart Thousand, Shepparton Cup and Traralgon Cup among other feature races. The Gold Cup program was affected by wet weather, and I am unsure if that was a factor behind the telecasts coming through quite dull in the home straight – either that or their track lighting urgently needs attention.
Records fall ■ Time records continued to tumble on Victorian tracks during the week, continuing an unprecedented recent period where some of the states fastest dogs have been rewriting the record books. On Tuesday (Mar. 25 ) Xylia Allen easily set new time figures for the 570metre journey at Horsham. Xylia Allen has been excelling over middle distances in recent times. The three-time Group One winner was also declared 2013 Victorian Greyhound of the Year. It is the third time she has claimed a track record, after similar performances at Launceston and Geelong previously. The following night, Black Magic Opal lowered the time standard set by his kennelmate Phenomenal at
Greyhounds
pleased to have appointed someone of Scott’s calibre to one of the industry’s most important leadership roles.
Patience tried
with Kyle Galley Ballarat, running 24.87 seconds for the 450-metre journey. Ironically, Phenomenal also held the Horsham record claimed by Xylia Allen 24 hours earlier. The Ballarat win was Black Magic Opal’s first since January. Black Magic Opal will more than likely be targeted at the rich Bendigo Cup series shortly by trainer Jason Thompson.
New CEO ■ Greyhounds Australasia, which oversees the various state bodies within the greyhound racing industry, has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer. Scott Parker commenced in the position on March 24, having previously served as CEO of Basketball Victoria. He has also spent the past decade in senior corporate public affairs roles, and holds an MBA from the Melbourne Business School. Greyhounds Australasia Chairman Russell Ware said the Board was
■ The patience of Cranbourne East trainer Greg McLachlan was rewarded last Wednesday night (Mar. 26) when Abit Cooler won at huge odds at Cranbourne. It was just the third race win for Abit Cooler at start 60, and he went around at odds of 78-1 on the TAB. Ironically all of Abit Cooler’s wins have been on his home track, with his most recent success last August. Connections will no doubt be hoping they don’t have to wait another nine months for their next win.
Puppy Classic ■ Louie Neveelk more than doubled his stakemoney earnings by claiming the $7000 first prize in the Puppy Classic Final at Traralgon last Thursday afternoon. The lightly-raced youngster now has three wins and four placings to his credit from 11 starts for trainer Rose Kleeven. Louie Neveelk led throughout to win the final, and the win capped a good week for the Kleeven kennel, as littermate Luca Neveelk also won at Warragul two days earlier.
Flashback ■ One of several tracks to open in Victoria in the early 1970s courtesy of changes to government legislation was at Wangaratta.
Along with Horsham, Cranbourne and Traralgon, Wangaratta’s opening in 1973 helped expose more Victorians to the exciting sport of greyhound racing, as the code rapidly expanded across the state. Officials of the Wangaratta Greyhound Racing Club pulled off a coup for their opening night on Saturday, December 22 1973 with the appearance of champion greyhound Lizrene in the Avian Free To All over 640 metres. Lizrene, inaugural Victorian Greyhound of the Year in 1973 and winner of 56 races from 97 starts, ran a 7-4 favourite and settled mid field before striking the lead on the turn and coming away to win by over two lengths. Karina Charm won the first race at Wangaratta, on an impressive circuit constructed inside the trotting track at Avian Park Racecourse, which was named in honour of the InterDominion champion, Avian Derby. Sadly both the trots and dogs would be dealt a rough deal by their respective controlling bodies in the decades ahead. Today, harness racing at Wangaratta is restricted to one meeting per year, staged on the Labour Day long weekend. At other times of the year, the Wangaratta club conducts their meetings at Shepparton. This came about as a result of Harness Racing Victoria’s controversial V3 report of 2005 which removed racing from several venues statewide, while forcing affected clubs to stage their meetings at other “more suitable” venues.
When the present Coalition government was elected they enabled clubs to be able to return their Cup meetings to their home venues, at considerable expense to the industry. But greyhound racing at Wangaratta fared far worse under the previous Labor Government. After their popular Saturday night programs were eventually shifted to a Friday morning timeslot, the club was closed down and racing ceased in June 2009, as it was felt too much money would be required to upgrade the fairly isolated venue. This was despite outcry from trainers statewide, previous assurances that money was available for required upgrades to facilities at the complex, and the fact that the racing circuit had only been rebuilt and reopened seven years earlier! As was the case with harness racing years before, it is difficult to gauge just how many participants have been lost to the sport by these Melbournebased decisions.

Will Earthquake rock them? ■ With the Golden Slipper coming up this Saturday, all eyes will be on the champion filly, Earthquake, to see if she can go through undefeated. The daughter of leading sire, Exceed and Excell, has taken all before her, but I felt although she won well, her rider Kerryn Mc Evoy had to give a crack with the whip to stave off her biggest danger in the big one, Mossfun. A lot of good judges including her trainer, Peter Snowden, are a little concerned that she will have a twoweek spell since her last win. Among the fillies that have won the Blue Diamond Stakes and then went onto the Golden Slipper, a few have failed to complete the double including top Victorian fillies, Alinghi and Samready. Admittedly Earthquake is all class, but if there is any rain about, the Team Hawkes trained filly, Mossfun, who finished just over a length behind her in the Reisling Stakes, will come right into calculations. On form it is very hard to see any other the two year-olds troubling the two top fillies. Earthquake is around the even money mark, with Mossfun at $ 7, then Ghibellines, another of Peter Snowden's big team at big odds with Unencumbered, prepared by Bjorn Baker. The better value is definitely, Mossfun, if you can $ 8 each way, especially if there is any rain about.
Mile clash ■ Another of the big feature events on the big Sydney Autumn Carnival is the running of the popular Doncaster over the 1600 metre trip to be run on Saturday, April 12 , with one of the best ever fields assembled to fight it out for the rich prize money. Until recently, the Guy Walter-trained mare, Appearance, was favourite, and in sparkling form, but the Hawkes team bobbed up with the brilliant Messene, who is racing in top form to blitz

them in the Ajax Stakes and has taken over as favorite for the 'Mile’. However there is not much between them in the markets. On the next line is the top New Zealander, El Roca, who is racing well, but has been very unlucky in drawing bad barriers. His trainer, Trent Busuttin, is quietly confident of a big show, especially if he can draw better. His form over the 1600 metre trip is spot on, and he will be in it for a long way. Without a doubt it is one of the best fields I have ever seen in the Doncaster, and given a good day will be a pleasure to watch. On the next line of favourtism is the start New Zealander, It's A Dundeel, if he starts. His run when third behind top mare Silent Achiever in the Ranvet Stakes over 1400 metres was very ordinary, and the Bjorn Baker camp are concerned as where to go next with the ATC Derby winner.
It looks like they could miss the Doncaster, and go to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, for which he was the early favourite on April 19. At present in the Doncaster he is at double figures, and I am not too sure that he has come up too well this time in. On the next line of betting you have two of the Chris Waller prepared runners, Boban, who came to back to form with a good win last start. Then you have, the top mare, Catkins, who struggled with her 58 kilos in the Coolmore Classic to finish third behind Step's In Time. On the next line is the Clarry Connors trained mare, Dear Demi, after a big run first up, disappointed in the Coolmore finishing well back in the field, admittedly after drawing wide, but would have to improve immensely to trouble the top gallopers in this. One I give a big show is the brilliant mare, Royal Descent,
another of the Chris Waller runners who flashed home from near last for a great fifth in the Coolmore after drawing wide. At $26, she represents great value for your hard earned.
Aust. Derby ■ Another of the feature events on the Australian Turf Club's Autumn Carnival is the ATC Derby, to be also run on Saturday, April 12. The top New Zealand colt, Puccini, is favorite after a big win in the New Zealand Derby beating a top field in very easy fashion. At present he around the $6 mark,

Starting from the extreme draw, Quadentate settled four back in the running line, with Salem leading from gate four. Commencing a forward move three wide solo at the bell, Quadentate gradually made ground on the leaders before finishing his race off well to score from Nimble Jack along the sprint lane after trailing the front runner. Artoc (three back the markers - four wide home turn) finished third. ■ At Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday, very much in-form It Is I/Glenlyon Glad 5-Y-0 gelding It Is Billy chalked up his third victory at headquarters this season when successful in the $17,275 Geelong Cup Pace for M1 or better class over 1720 metres, returning a brilliant rate of 1-53.3. Trained at Daylesford by Mick Barby and driven by wife Anne-Maree Conroy, It Is Billy once again showed plenty of speed from the pole to lead throughout, accounting for Washmepockets which trailed, using the sprint lane to go down by a head only, with Kotare Roland (three back the markers) close up in third place. Raced by the Glenlyon Syndicate who are always on hand to cheer the horse home, It Is Billy has fronted the starter 27 times for 12 wins. - Len Baker ● More harness racing on Page 50

Given a sweet passage from inside the second line trailing the front runner Wingofwaves, Pascarma driven with plenty of vigour on straightening, finished hard along the sprint lane to gain the day by a neck in 2-02.4, with Illawong Lively third after facing the breeze from the bell.
Much improved ■ Rockbank's Joe Vassallo brought up victory number two at the Warragul program with much improved Union Guy/Alberts Belle 5-Y-0 gelding Impressive Guy in the letsgotrotting.com Pace for C1 class over 1785 metres, giving Daryl Douglas a double for the afternoon. In a similar scenario to Pascarma, Impressive Guy trailed the leader and favourite Three Gold Bars, before using the sprint lane to score in a rate of 2-00.6 over Three Gold Bars and Inclinator which followed the pair.
Joy at Charlton ■ Popular Huntly trainer Barry Quigley was in the winners stall at Charlton on Wednesday March 26, following the victory of 5-Y-0 Mach Three/Janoela Star mare Sukovia in the Charlton & District Community Bank Pace for C1 class over 1609 metres. Driven by Daryl Douglas, Sukovia led throughout from gate two, scoring by a neck in 1-57.8 over Waterslide (one/one) and Beau Romulus which raced in the open.

Leading out from gate two, Satisfied Grin who has been in a number of stables since he first graced the track, defied all challengers to score by a head after the runner up Philtra Phella along the sprint lane after trailing appeared to have his measure in the shadows of the post. The Kimura finished third after cutting the breeze.
Brilliant start ■ Maiden Gully's David Van Ryn and nephew Haydon Gray have been in winning form of late and were successful with 4-Y-0 Majestic Son/Steffi Jay gelding Jaden Girl in the Kam-Kam (Horse) Trotters Handicap for T1 or better class over 2100 metres at Charlton. Slightly slow to begin from barrier two as the tapes released, Jaden Girl settled mid-field in the running line, with Conchs Critter beginning brilliantly as usual to lead easily from barrier five. Despite racing wide for the final circuit, Jaden Girl was too strong at the finish, defeating the old timer Master Kiesey along the sprint lane after following the pacemaker, with Conchs Critter holding down third. The mile rate 2-06.4.
Run of the race ■ Former Kiwi trainer/driver Warren Cochrane now based at Bagshot in Central Victoria, brought up victory number three with much improved four year old Mach Three/Executive Lady gelding Uroc Mman in the VHRSC Pace (Heat 2) for C1 class over 2180 metres at Kilmore on Thursday. Rogers Joy (three back the markers) finished third.
Given no peace by favourite ■ Monegeetta's Lisa Miles took the honours at the Warragul fixture on Monday, March 24, providing a stable double with Jasmine Sheffield taking the feature event of the afternoon - the $25,275 Eastern Challenge Final for C3 & C4 class over 2205 metres and Jacquis Lad the Dannys The Venue Pace for C1 class over the same distance. Jasmine Sheffield, a 5Y-0 daughter of Badlands Hanover and Tanya Sheffield who usually finishes close up in her races, is raced by a large group of owners and stable supporters led out from the pole, before taking a trail on the well supported second elect Tandias Bromac (gate five), leaving the favourite Black Coyote in the open. Given no peace by the favourite, especially from the bell when Glenferrie EJ was sent forward three wide from last to challenge the leaders, Jasmine Sheffield made full use of the sprint lane to gain the prize in advance of a game Glenferrie EJ and Here And Now (one/one) in a slick rate of 1-59.3. Seven-year-old Julius Caesar/Ok Jacqui gelding Jacquis Lad scored in similar fashion. Pushing through from inside the second line to follow the pacemaker Antoquities, Jacquis Lad although appearing to be under extreme pressure approaching the home turn, rallied under hard driving in the shadows of the post to burst through a narrow gap and score by a nose in a tricky finish over Stynz Boy out wide and Readyforreign in a rate of 2-01.4 in a tricky finish.

Treble ■ Bendigo based reinswoman Ellen Tormey loves competing at Mildura and enjoyed a "night of nights" there on Tuesday March 25, chalking up a driving treble included in which was a training double for local Merbein South trainer Jason McGinty - Fineandsunny and Ellehigh. First to arrive was the heavily backed Fineandsunny in the Seelite Windows & Doors Mildura Trotters Cup Pace for C0 class over 1790 metres. Settling three back in the moving line from gate two on the second line, Fineandsunny, a fouryear-old daughter of Village Jasper and Sunny Sometimes was set alight racing for the bell to park outside the pacemaker Isajet (gate three) which was also backed off the map. In a two horse war for the final circuit, Fineandsunny prevailed by a half head in a rate of 200.8, with Saint Stormy (one/one last lap) 4.7 metres away in third place. Four-year-old Elsu/ Lookuphigh gave McGinty the double when successful in the Harness Breeders (Vic) Pace for C0 class also over 1790 metres.
Sent forward from outside the front row to cross Horizon Miss with around 1200 metres to travel, Ellehigh defied all challengers to account for Robelles Falcon which dropped to the back of the winner at the bell after Horizon Miss went off stride. Modernize finished third after always being handy. The mile rate 2-01.2. Stawell trainer Owen Martin provided Ellen with her second winner, splitting the pair when ModernArt/Lagoon Fantasy gelding Usage snared the Park Douglas Printing 3-Y-0 Pace over 1790 metres. Angling to be one/one from a solo second line draw, Usage eased three wide on the home turn to tackle the leading pair of True Character and Billy Mack and in a punishing finish, gained a half head decision over a game Billy Mack and True Character in a rate of 2-00.2.
Bloused ■ With thrilling racing all through the night at Mildura, the feature event on the program - the Mildura Pacing Cup Carnival April 8-12 Pace for C6 or better class over 2190 metres saw bonny six-year-old Blissful Hall/ Forest Glory mare Maarstricht chalk up her 14th victory in 49 outings much to the delight of Melbourne owner/breeders Jack and Nola Munnerley, giving the brood mare her 118th winner. Trained at Mildura by Shayne Cramp, Maarstricht starting inside the second line with young Zac Phillips in the sulky possied three back along the markers. ■ Princess Asha, Lelisgirl, Sir Dasher Dee, Goodlooking Prince, Cool Carat, Salute Branach, I Wantano, The Kimura.
Took concession ■ Nine-year-old Our Sir Vancelot/Cobbity Cobbity gelding Donoson, one of Kialla trainer Steve O'Donoghue's all time favourites, registered his 17th victory in 70 outings, when greeting the judge in the Dunlop Super Dealer Pace for C2 & C3 class over 2100 metres at Charlton. Taking a concession for the stable's Bec Bartley, Donoson enjoyed an easy passage from the pole trailing the leader Burninupthestars (gate three), before easing away from the markers on straightening and finishing best to score by 2.7 metres in a rate of 2-01.4 over the pacemaker, with Lively Operative third after following the pair.
Gained upper hand ■ Axedale trainer/driver Mick Carbone's New Zealand-bred Mach Three/Vermillion 5-Y-0 gelding Master Pip overcame a 30 metre backmark to land the Harness Thursday Trackside Treats Pacers Handicap for C1 class over 2150 metres. Stepping safely, Master Pip gradually made ground to be one/two mid-race, before moving a spot closer when the heavily backed Miss Toolern Vale crossed the leader Forever Arma at the bell leaving Sunrise Lady in the open. Taken three wide in the last lap to be outside the leader on the home turn, Master Pip gained the upper hand shortly after, holding a 4.5 metre margin to the wire in accounting for Miss Toolern Vale and Forever Arma in a rate of 2-02.
Settled four back ■ Parwan trainer Geoff Walker combined with Jodi Quinlan to capture the Catch It To Kilmore 2Y-0 Trotters Handicap over 1660 metres at Kilmore with Muscle Hill/Adellas Dash filly Glenferrie Burn. Making her third race appearance, Glenferrie Burn raced by Peter Chambers' Glenferrie Farms Pty Ltd was safely away from barrier four, settling four back along the markers, before moving to be one/one in the final circuit following her stablemate Glenferrie Belle. Trapped outside ■ Melton's Alison Chisholm snared the www.facebook.com/kilmoreracing Claiming Pace over 2180 metres with Kiwi-bred 6-Y-0 Falcon Seelster/Mustang Sally gelding Jaccka Murphy. The mile rate 200.8.
