■ Each of the current day Coodabeen Champions radio team has been awarded the medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Billy Baxter, Andrew Bellairs, Jeff Richardson, Greg Champion, Jeffrey ‘Torch’ McGee and Ian Cover have each been cited for the performing arts, and to radio.

Their weekly show is currently heard on Fridays on Mornington Peninsula radio station 3MP, and the ACE Radio Network.

The ‘troupe’ were first heard on Saturday mornings on Melbourne station 3RRR in the early 1980s, alongside shows such as Lawyers, Guns and Money co-hosted by ‘Ross Stevenson’ (Ross Campbell) and Punter-ToPunter.

Jeff Richardson and Simon Whelan came up with the concept for thr show in 1981, and Billy Baxter provided the name.

Quandry over quarry?

■ Indi MHR Helen Haines was due to have been declared as winner of the seat yesterday (Tues.) as The Local Paper went to press.

Dr Haines was due to be at the Australian Electoral Commission Divisional Office at Wangaratta for the Declaration of the Poll, followed by a celebration morning tea at her electorate office.

Travellers stranded

Alternative route

■ Works are progressing on the Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route at Mansfield, with the road base construction works on Withers Lane and Dead Horse Lane now complete as far as Ford Creek.

Final pavement sealing is scheduled to occur in October when weather conditions are more favourable to ensure a durable surface.

The construction of the new left-hand turning lane at the intersection of Maroondah Hwy and Withers Lane will be also be completed after the snow season, once weather and traffic conditions are more suitable.

Mansfield Mayor Cr James Tehan said the Council was looking forward to increased safety on roads for all users as an outcome of the Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route.

The Council expects to award the contract for construction of Stage 2 of the project at its June 21 meeting. Stage 2 will connect Midland Hwy with Mount Buller Rd via Dead Horse Lane, Mansfield-Whitfield Rd, Mt Battery Rd, and Greenvale Lane.

● Was there a political dilemma for Northern Victoria MLC, Wendy Lovell, who greeted Mitchell Shire protesters on the steps of State Parliament House last week? The protesters came by bus to protest about a quarry planned by Conundrim Holdings on land at Beveridge owned by Whittlesea-Wallan businessman Wally Mott. The Mott family have been Liberal Party supporters over the years. Mr Mott is also owner of the North Central Review newspaper which covers a sizeable chunk of Ms Lovell’s Upper House electorate. Ms Lovell did not seem perturbed to be photographed with the anti-quarry protesters (see inset).

Badger Weir fix

■ Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish told State Parliament of the urgent need for attention to be given to Badger Weir.

“My question is for the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change.

Minister, will you ensure action is taken to repair the entrance road at Badger Weir picnic ground once and for all?

“I have had to raise this matter far too many times. Locals and visitors are sick and tired of suffering the discomfort of dodging, weaving and driving over unavoidable potholes.

“I raised this exact issue in November 2020 to be told: ‘… longer-term works due to commence by March 2021 … works will include the installation of a new culvert to improve drainage, and re-sealing the road surface’.

“Clearly this did not happen, or the repairs did not last. I am yet to receive a response to my letter to the minister from April. I visited the park again last week and was gobsmacked to see, again, the terrible condition the entrance road is in, and it is only going to get worse during winter.

“This is an asset to the Yarra Valley and a popular destination, and it needs to be cared for and fixed,” Ms McLeish said.

Nillumbik feedback

■ Nillumbik’s draft Municipal Planning Strategy has been released for community feedback.

The Strategy sits at the front of Nillumbik Planning Scheme, providing the vision and foundation for the Nillumbik Planning Scheme’s local policies and strategic directions for land use and development in the Shire.

It is a high-level strategy within the Planning Scheme. It identifies key influences, issues and objectives regarding land use and development that are unique to a local government area, but does not outline or detail the use of specific planning controls such as zones and overlays.

The draft strategy outlines the importance of the urban tree canopy and neighbourhood character, protection of the urban growth boundary, the protection and conservation of biodiversity, the natural environment, and cultural heritage, as well as living more sustainably and managing fire risk among others.

● Buxton CFA’s No 2 Tanker scored a special wash ahead of going on display at the Alexandra Truck, Ute and Rod Show on Sunday.

■ Thousands of visitors flocked to Alexandra over the Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend for the Truck, Ute and Rod Show.

After disruptions to the 2020 and 2021 shows because of COVID pandemic restrictions, crowd numbers were encouraging.

Grant St was blocked off so that vehicles could go on display. The weekend started with the Victorian Truck Drivers Memorial Service at Rotary Park on Saturday afternoon (June 11). About 300 people attended.

Sunday saw the vehicles on display, the woodchop, and live music acts. Murrindindi Shire Council joined with a number of local business to sponsor the show.

Organisers, including Andrew Embling and Gordon Simpsons, thanked sponsors for their loyalty.

Local footy on TV

■ Euroa MLA Steph Ryan told State Parliament last week that North-East Line rail passengers had been stranded because of train breakdowns.

“The Andrews Government needs to front up and explain why the brand new VLocity train on the north-east line has been so badly damaged that it has been pulled out of service,” Ms Ryan said.

“We have had reports that chunks of the wheels have fallen off, but track inspections by the Australian Rail Track Corporation have found no fault with the track.

“Instead of V/Line pointing fingers at the ARTC, the Government needs to give an honest account of what has happened. People in our region are completely sick of this. We want the blame game to end.

“We want the Victorian Government to be honest about what has happened and to explain why a train but months old—a brand new train—has had to be pulled out of service, leaving commuters stranded and services cancelled on the north-east line,” Ms Ryan said.

■ Parliamentarian Brad Battin last Wednesday (June 8) praised first responders, especially those who worked in the storms that hit the Dandenong Ranges one year ago.

“I think it is really important at this time that we also acknowledge the work they have done through the Dandenong Ranges as we come up to 12 months since the storms that went through the Dandenong Ranges,” the Gembrook MLA said.

“We are very proud in the Liberal-Nationals to commit to making sure that there is a new SES station for the Dandenong Ranges, because the pressure that was put on the Emerald SES and other surrounding SESs like Lilydale was overwhelming during that crisis,” Mr Battin said.

Whroovale playtime

■ Residents of the Whroovale estate north of Nagambie are keen to have children’s outdoor equipment in the open space area bordered by Kheminda Crescent and Jean Claude Avenue.

Since engaging with residents, Strathbogie Council says it has a greater direction of what the community want in this open space beyond the existing path and several advanced trees.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor Cr Laura Binks thanked the Whroovale estate residents for their quick responses to the survey.

“Overwhelmingly, most of the 112 people who responded to the survey suggested they wanted a fun area with children’s play equipment as well as some green space and a small percentage wanted some fitness equipment.”

Commentry was taken from the Yarra Valley FM radio match description. There was an average of 20-30 viewers for the live streaming which included netball score updates from Warburton-Millgrove v Yea. The commentary team announced that the streaming this Saturday (June 18) will be from Kinglake.

■ Whittlesea CityAdministrator Lydia Wilson has indicated optimism that future Council meetings will be held in person.

“Welcome to this Council Meeting of the May 16 which is being livestreamed due to the continuing impacts of COVID and a recent increase in case numbers which are affecting staff at the City of Whittlesea,” Ms Wilson told the latest meeting.

“So, this is a required precautionary measure we are very optimistic, however, that we will be out and about again very soon and holding our next Council Meeting in person and it will be in a community setting at the Barry Road Community Activity Centre, in Thomastown,” Ms Wilson said.

Local News $1.5m Park project

■ Murrindindi Shire Council has announced that the Alexandra Rotary Park and VisitorActivity Precinct contract has been awarded, with construction set to commence later this month, weather permitting.

This $1.55 million project is possible due to the support from Sport and Recreation Victoria and Regional Development Victoria, which have contributed $250,000 and $800,000 respectively to supplement Council's $500,000 investment.

Works are expected to take around six months to complete and will involve installation of new play equipment and footpaths, construction of a pump track and landscaping works. During construction, Rotary Park and Hec Ingram Reserve will be closed to the public.

■ State Cabinet ministers Jaclyn Symes and Ingrid Stitt will be targeted in a campaign led by United Firefighter Union secretary Peter Marshall, the Saturday Herald Sun reported. ■ Former Jeff Kennett was at the peak of his hubris and political arrogance just ahead of the 1999 State Election when the unthinkable happened. He lost. Current day comparisons about 2022 and 1999 are being drawn about a certain arrogance from Daniel Andrews. Veteran observers say that the Premier needs to keep that in mind in the crucial five months ahead of the State Poll.

■ Colin Brooks, Labor’s Speaker in the Legislative Assembly, had a message for the Queen, in State Parliament last week: “ On the occasion of the Queen’s platinum jubilee, on behalf of the house I want to congratulate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her lifetime of service. Throughout her reign Her Majesty has upheld her commitment to the people of the Commonwealth, and she is greatly admired for that.

■ Bentleigh MLA Nick Staikos was ejected from State Parliament for an hour by Speaker Colin Brooks on Tuesday last week (June 7). The Labor Bentleigh member interjected while Opposition Leader Matthew Guy was grilling Premier Daniel Andrews about the state of emergency care at the Austin and Northern Hospitals.

“It is obvious to me that we have a lot of passionate people in the Eildon community, many of whom have volunteered to join ‘action teams’ to advance the priority projects and help bring them to life,” Cr Gallagher said.

“The next step will be for the Eildon Community Planning Core Team to finalise their draft Eildon Community Plan which will reflect the six priority projects, each with a committed action team. The Plan will then go out to the broader community for feedback.

Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish says the Coalition plans to shift focus to rehoming and veterinary intervention to manage the brumby population. “The Coalition will put an end to Labor’s cruel and inhumane plans of killing brumbies through aerial and ground shooting. We will completely rule it out. The Coalition will conduct a thorough and more accurate assessment of the brumby population.”

Ms McLeish has joined a number of protests on the steps of State Parliament, standing with Victorians who are furious with Labor’s massacre. “We cannot ignore communities’ objections to culling these brumbies,” Ms McLeish said. “The city centric Labor government’s ignorant approach will not deliver good outcomes for the environment or for farmers.”

Local People Well done Nikolas

■ The City of Whittlesea has The Chair of acknowledged and congratulated up-andcoming local tennis star Nikolas Baker on his recent success at the national titles in Canberra.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said Nikolas won the 12 and under boys national singles and doubles which places him as the number one ranked player in Australia for his age group.

He has also been named in the Australian Team to tour Europe this month.

Nikolas lives in Bundoora and he, along with his whole family are members of the Norris Bank Tennis Club which has been an integral part of his growth and training.

With success like this comes hours and hours of practice and training and the Ms Wilson commended his incredible dedication and commitment at such a young age and commended Nikolas’ family and the Club for all they are doing to support this young man.

“Council will be keeping a close eye on Nikolas’ career and wishes him every success in Europe,” Ms Wilson said.

New providers for aged care ■ Yarra Ranges Council will be transferring the management of some of its in-home aged care services including domestic assistance, personal and respite care, individual social support, home modifications and property maintenance (lawn mowing and gutter cleaning) as of July 1.

This decision was made by Council in August last year in response to the significant changes to the aged care sector.

A Council representative said it was pleased to advise the Federal Government has appointed Villa Maria Catholic Homes and MiCare to deliver the following in-home services: Domestic Assistance, Individual Social Support, Personal Care and Respite Care Uniting AgeWell has been appointed to deliver Property Maintenance and Home Modification services from July 1.

All three providers are not-for-profit aged care providers with many years of experience supporting older people. All are reputable organisations within the aged care sector and the local region.

“This is a great outcome for our current clients and ageing population, as these providers can offer a range of services from entry level to high level complex care as people’s needs change,” the Shire representative said.

■ Significant improvements have been made within Mansfield Council’s statutory planning department because of a review undertaken.

Nearly 90 per cent of permits are now issued within the required State Government timeframes which is a 30 per cent increase on the previous year.

Mansfield Mayor Cr James Tehan said that the statutory planning team had been working hard to improve timeframes.

“Town planning was identified in community satisfaction surveys and through various forms of feedback as an area that needed improvement,” Cr Tehan said.

Kidnap charges

■ Detectives from the Echo Taskforce arrested three people on Thuirsday (June 9) as part of their investigation into a kidnapping last month linked to the Rebels Outlaw Motorcycle Gang.

Warrants were executed at residential addresses in Wallan, Kilmore and Craigieburn.

A 37-year-old Wallan man, believed to be a sergeant at arms within the Rebels OMCG, along with a 33-year-old Kilmore woman and a 16-year-old boy were arrested.

All three were interviewed by police and were charged as follows: ■ The Wallan man has been charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, armed robbery, intentionally cause injury, assault with weapon, prohibited persons carry firearm, possess firearm when Firearm Prohibition Order applies, possess ammunition when Firearm Prohibition Order applies, possess drug of dependence and handle stolen goods; ■ The Kilmore woman has been charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, armed robbery, intentionally cause injury, assault with weapon, possess ammunition, possess drug of dependence and handle stolen goods; and ■ The teenage boy has been charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, armed robbery, intentionally cause injury, assault with weapon and possess drug of dependence.

The two adults were to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday afternoon, while the teen will appear at a children’s court.

Detectives seized a number of items from the properties including drugs believed to be cannabis, methylamphetamine and LSD, ammunition, weapons including an extendable baton, stolen property including stolen number plates, and electronic devices.

A 31-year-old Wallan woman and a 65year-old Wallan man were also arrested on outstanding warrants and unrelated matters.

The arrests follow an incident about 4.15pm on May 15 where a man was allegedly taken from his home address in Craigieburn and seriously assaulted by a number of people. Three representatives from Major Roads came to explain major roads reconstruction on main local thoroughfares.

Major Road Projects’ function is to oversee the delivery of major road projects around metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

First point addressed was the upgrade of Bridge Inn Rd. The project will:■ add extra lanes in each direction ■ install traffic lights at Cookes Rd and Garden Rd ■ build a bridge over Plenty River and turn the existing bridge into a shared walking and cycling path ■ install safety barriers along the road ■ upgrade the intersections at Schotters Rd, Vantage Point Boulevard and Painted Hills Rd ■ install traffic lights near Ivanhoe Grammar School, including a pedestrian crossing to improve access to local schools There is often a long time between planning and commencement contributes to construction fatigue. One major procedural change has been the introduction of 24 hour work on these major undertakings to reduce community constraints.

Other concerns were land acquisitions and the welfare of the Swift Parrot, and getting direct access to the Yarrambat School and Yarrambat Park.

Major Roads plan roads based on traffic projections expected for the year 2036. When estates are developed there is always and agreed parcel of land to be compulsorily acquired for road or utility works.

Planning has become more coordinated over time to ensure a project is “shovel ready” Contractors are awarded the job and make determinations on how the work will be done.

When Bridge Inn and Yan Yean Rds are rebuilt they will be much safer to travel on and be managed by designed co-ordinated traffic controls.

■ Yarra Ranges Shire Council has formally discontinued a 63 square metre portion of Thomas Ave in Warburton, following an application from a community member.

The applicant, whose property backs on to the unused section of road at 3415 Warburton Hwy, asked the Council to discontinue the section, so that the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning can then sell or lease the portion to them.

Local Briefs Yea Golf Club

■ Wednesday saw nine brave, some would say silly, men played a stroke and putting round at Yea. Conditions were not ideal but we had sunshine at times and no rain.

Winner was Brian Simmons (11) with a superb 68 nett. Second was Brendan Chenhall (0) with nett 73. Gary Pollard with 23 putts won the putting, Alan Pell was NTP on the 11th and Neil Ross won the Club Award.

Cool conditions didn’t deter 16 players contesting the second and final round of the Prideaux Cup at Yea on Saturday Brian Simmons and Rob O’Halloran both shot great rounds of 34 pts to share 3rd place Mick Spagnolo continued his recent run of excellent golf with 36 pts. But that wasn’t enough to overhaul first round leader Greg Clements.

Greg and Mick tied with a combined 2 round total of 71 pts and will now play off next Saturday to decide the 2022 Prideaux Cup. Daily event winners were Mick Spagnolo from Rob O’Halloran , Brian Simmons and Greg Clements.

Brian also took out the NTP on the 11th hole to complete a very consistent round. Neil Ross was awarded the Club Award Members are reminded to complete their second round fixtures of the Knockout Competition prior to the end of June.

Friday film at Yea

■ Murrindindi Film Society will screen the 2007 romantic drama Love in the Time of Cholera this Friday (June 17). Doors will open at 6.45pm at the Yea Council chambers.

Based on the book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the story is set in 19th Century Colombia in the walled city of Cartagena.

A lowly clerk named Florentino is rejected by a beautiful young woman from a wealthy family.

She later marries a successful doctor who has a reputation gained from fighting cholera, but Florentino remains in love with her for the next 50 years.

He devotes much of his adult life to affairs with numerous other women in a desperate attempt to heal his broken heart.

Lavishly photographed with strong performances from Xavier Bardem and Benjamin Bratt, the film explores the many aspects of romantic love, often with a disarming sense of humour.

It is hoped as many members and prospective members as possible will brave the cold to see this different and entertaining film.

Kinglake Ideas Cafe

■ An Ideas Cafe is to be held at Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House from 10am1pm this Saturday (June 18).

The talks, taking in topics for the Kinglake Ranges and Flowerdale, promote local initiative. The event is free, and is supported by local community volunteers.

The Ideas Cafe is designed to help people develop their ideas and move them into action, and to connect with others.

Paramedics assist

■ Northern Victoria MLC Tania Maxwell has welcomed a move by Australia’s first community paramedic service to extend its home care health support network to the North East.

The Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party MLC said HMS Collective will partner with Wangaratta’s Open Door Neighbourhood House specifically to deliver preventative health care for carers who look after others at home.

The service will also help these carers to connect with doctors and other community support. HMS Collective co-chief executive officer Ranee Wilkinson expects the ‘Care for carers’ service to start within six weeks.

Only one game played over Queen’s Birthday weekend

Rebel Reserves record win against Junction ■ The AFL Outer East League Round 10 of the 2022 season saw the Alexandra Football Netball Club host YarraJunction at Rebel Park for the ‘Truck Show’ weekend’.

It was the only game played in the League as part of a split round, the remaining matches in each division played next weekend.

The Under 18s had a bye and the Junior League also had the bye.

Reserves The Reserves had a number of players unavailable but welcomed Jedd Hamill and Jordan Rice back to the Club together with Todd Galloway for his first game since 2001, and Paul Wallis down from the Gold Coast.

Despite all the rain over the last couple of weeks the ground was in good condition and the Rebels managed to record a win, Alexandra 12.5 (77) to Yarra Junction 7.4 (46).

This coming Saturday the Under 18s play Seville at Yarra Glen whilst the remaining football teams and netball teams all have the bye, resuming the following week on June 25 with home games hosting Powelltown.

This coming Sunday the juniors travel to Yea for three games of football and three games of netball with the Under 15 football travelling to Upwey Tecoma for their game.

Last Sunday the Club had a hospitality tent at Rotary Park as part of the Truck Show and we thank more than 50 volunteers that set up, worked the shifts and packed up on a very successful day for the Club and community, a big thank you to the event organisers.

Hospital: heard it all before ■ Dr MatthewBach, Eastern Metropolitan MLC, late last year reminded State Parliament that the Andrews Labor Government had promised an Eltham Community Hospital prior to the 2019 State Election.

This month - June 2022, three years later - sees the State Government announcing that Eltham Community Hospital will be delivered “on track and on time”.

A media release, issued on Saturday (June 11), said Martin Foley, Minister for Health, and Vicki Ward, Eltham MLA, announced that a government-owned parcel of land at 405 Ryans Rd, Diamond Creek, will be home to the new multi-million-dollar facility.

“To be operated by Austin Health, the Eltham area Community Hospital (interim name) will be a public hospital providing a range of day hospital and primary health care ser-

Strong links to specialists, community health and social support services will improve follow-up treatment and support for those requiring complex care.

“The Ryans Rd site is close to a range of community facilities and services including playgrounds, schools and sporting facilities, and is serviced by a number of bus routes connecting to surrounding areas including Eltham Station, Greensborough, Diamond Creek and Hurstbridge,” said the media release. “ This location is a great outcome for our local community, it’ll mean we’ll be able to get a number of everyday health services close to home, without having to travel in traffic to the Austin or Northern Health,” said Ms Ward.

“Once completed, the hospital will offer urgent care, general medical and specialist appointments, day surgery and chronic disease management, a huge benefit for locals.”

The project is due for completion in 2024.

Local News Caveat Mudbash

■ More than 800 Rover Scouts headed to Mafeking Rover Park at Caveat last weekend for the long-awaited return of the entirely youth-run motorsport event, Mudbash.

The anticipation for the Queen’s Birthday Holiday weekend event had been building significantly due to a two-year hiatus and the momentous milestone of a 50-year event anniversary.

Teams of Rover Scouts have spent months preparing vehicles to meet high level racing and safety standards to be able to compete.

With 16 different events including a hill climb, head-to-head and main area shows, there were plenty of opportunities for Rover Scouts to display skills they have been practising in preparation.

The Mudbash event is completely youth organised from the campsite the event is hosted at, to the running of the camping and entertainment, to the marshalling and coordination of the motorsport.

Mudbash playedc host to an open day last Sunday (June 12), to highlight all the best elements of the Scouting Program for Scouting members and the public alike.

There was mountain biking, abseiling, hayrides and face painting.

Event Chair, Lucy Hubbard of 5th Keilor Scout Group, said, “The skills I have gained from having the chance to lead Mudbash 2022 and manage a large event team has given me skills I can use at work and to build my career.”

Chief Commissioner, Rod Byrnes said, “Our youth members get the fantastic opportunity to try their hand at large-scale people management and teamwork that provides practical skill-building you won’t find in any classroom.”

At Coildstream

■ The new Coldstream Fire Station was officially opened this week.

Harriet Shing, MLC for Eastern Victoria, visited the new station to pen the Killara Rd facility, just down the road from the old site.

The $1.5 million station is s part of the State Government’s $126 million Capability Funding Package, which is supporting the CFA to keep its volunteers safe, prepared and equipped to respond to emergencies.

The new urban volunteer station now boasts three drive-through motor room bays for safely housing brigade appliances, male and female changing rooms, and a large meeting room for training and brigade meetings.

It includes upgraded, compliant toilets for all genders, a new workshop, storage and other operational support areas, onsite parking for brigade members, and new landscaping.

Originally known as the Lilydale Bush Fire Brigade, the Coldstream Rural Fire Brigade was established in 1963 and since then, members have attended many incidents right across the state, as well as interstate.

The Coldstream Fire Brigade responded to the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires, which the surrounding community was heavily impacted by.

Brigade members also turn out to many motor vehicle accidents in the Coldstream, Healesville and Yarra Glen areas.

There are currently 41 members part of this brigade, including 12 women and 29 men.

The brigade commenced operations from the new site in February.

“The Coldstream Fire Brigade plays an important role in protecting the local community and I am thrilled to officially open the new fire station, which will have far-reaching benefits for not only its members, but local residents as well,” said Ms Shing.

“I am proud to see this Labor Government’s investment in fire services continuing to transform and upgrade local brigades all across the state.”

RSPCA prosecutes

■ RSPCA Victoria successfully prosecuted a ase of severe animal neglect in Geelong Magistrates’ Court resulting in a conviction, fines and a disqualification order.

Janelle Blackley who pleaded guilty to all charges, was convicted, penalised more than $1300 in fines and costs and also given a disqualification order which prohibits her from owning any dog for a period of ten years.

The case, heard before Magistrate John Bentley, involved two Jack Russell Terrier mixed breed dogs named Precious and Kimba.

Local History

Cathkin first settled in 1840 ■ Cathkin became the junction for the Tallarook-Mansfield railway line, and the Alexandra branch line.

The Murrindindi Shire Heritage Study (2011) says: The Cathkin settlement was named by Crawford Allen, the first squatter who arrived in the area in 1840 - he is said to have named the run after the Cathkin Braes, near Carmunnuck, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

In 1851 Cathkin was taken over

by John Maxwell, who had arrived in Victoria in 1836. Maxwell was associated with one of Victoria's largest landholders, Hugh Glass, who also owned considerable property in what is now the Murrindindi Shire.

The former pastoral settlement of 20,480 acres (9,300 ha) was first listed as 'Catkin' on Hiscock's 1874 map of the Parish of Anglesea.

In Gaelic 'Catkin' means 'at the battle height'.

The first school opened in the 1880s but closed in 1895.

The Cathkin State School opened in 1905 when the area was known as Molesworth East. This School closed in 1946.

The railway station opened in 1890 - it was a junction for Koriella and Alexandra on the TallarookMansfield line.

The poet, James McRae Dunn, was station master from 1939-1970.

The line was finally closed in 1978.

Postal and telegraph services were an important means of communication between the early townships and the outside world.

The efforts to establish a means of communication via mail and telegraph services in townships such as Alexandra, Yea, Molesworth and Cathkin were of vital importance in these somewhat isolated regions during the 19th century.

The telegraph facility was introduced in Cathkin in 1890 and to nearby Whittlesea in 1891.

Local historians Glen and Nancy Jones recorded the history of the post office in their local history, Molesworth 1824-1994.

The post office at Cathkin was established at the railway station on October 6, 1890, and Alfred O Capell, who was the station master, became the first postmaster.

John A. Macauley succeeded him in 1891 and remained at the post office until 1893. James Bennett was postmaster until 1901.

Dawson and Mr George Sadler. The hotel eventually closed and was converted to a residence c.1914.

It served as the Meehan family residence for many years (possibly from 1914).

Later owners, the Thomas family added a rear extension to the house in the 1980s.

The house retains 19th century features such as Baltic pine lining boards internally.

The last passenger service to Cathkin was on May 28, 1977. It had opened on June 10, 1890, and was known as Alexandra Road.

The railway was extended on November 10, 1890, with the line eventually reaching Mansfield in 1891.

The short 7-kilometre long branch was opened from Cathkin to Koriella in 1890, being extended another seven kilometres to Alexandra in 1909.

However, it is known that A.W. White was postmistress around 1908 and it is believed W.F. Local football clubs hold concerts ■ Concerts were seen as good fundraisers for local football clubs in 1905.

Clubs at Hazel Glen, Tallarook and Yea were amongst those to stage events.

The Evelyn Observer (Dec. 8, 1905) reported on an end-of-year event: In honour of the Hazelglen Football Club having won the Premiership for 1905, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie W. Clarke, of "Linton Grange," Hazelglen, treated its members, supporters, and friends to a concert and ball last Friday evening at the HazeIglen Hall.

The affair was liberally patronised, so much so; indeed, that the seating accommodation of the hall was not nearly sufficient ; the building was literally packed, and many had to be content by standing around the eutrance outside fortuately the weather was fine.

The proceedings were commenced by Mr. Clarke stepping on the stage. and introducing the Chairman (Mr. Walter Thomas), who, he said, he thought was the fit and proper person to fill the position, seeing that he was the Chair.man of the Football Association.

Mr Thomas, on taking the chair, thanked them for the honour conferred on him, and complimented the Hlazelglen Football Club in having won the 1905 Premiership against heavy odds.

He also said that the district and club was fortunate in possessing so liberal a patron as Mr Clarke, who was a thorough sportsman, and believed in fair play.

The very large gathering there that evening was evidence of the popularity and esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Clarke were held.

These remarks were applauded, then followed the programme, which, unquestionably, was a capital one, the items being excellently rendered by performers from Melbourne.

The opening piece was a pianoforte recitation by Mr. Horace Gleeson; then followed a song by Miss Wheeler; recitation by Mr Gregory; song, with guitar accompaniment by Miss Malingreer ; comic song, Mr Harrison; violin solo by Master Leslie Bobsion; song by Miss Fleming; comic song, Mr A. Smith; which completed the first part of the programuue.

The above performers also contributed the second part. As stated above the programme was excellently rendered, The violin solos were particularly appreciated, the various songs and recitations loudly applauded, the comic items "catching on" immensely; indeed, every performer had. to respond to unmistakable encores.

At the conclusion of the programme the Chairman proposed a vote of thanks to the performers, and called for cheers for their generous entertainers, Mr. and Mrs. Clarke.

These were spontaneously given, and Mr Clarke suitably returned thanks, remarking that what had been done by his wife and himself had come from their hearts, and he hoped always to be able to forward on true sport in the district, The hall was then cleared, seats re-arrangod, and a start made with the ball. ■ The annual meeting of the Yea Football Club was held at the Caledonian Hotel on Thursday evening, reported The Yea Chronicle on May 10, 1906.

The vote included a motion to ascertain the cost of procuring the services of a professional trainer to train the team, and the amount that could be raised locally, apart from the general funds of the Club, for the purpose of defraying same.

Mr. W. Redpath, President of the Club, was in the chair and there was a large attendance of members.

After the usual routine business had to been disposed of, the Hon. Secretary, Mr. H, M. Smith, stated that he would not be able to submit a balance sheet until next meeting, and was not able to definitely state the position of the Club.

The election of office-bearers was next proceeded with. Mr. W. Redpath was unanimously reelected President of the Club for the ensuing year, and eulogistic remarks were made by various speakers in regard to the energy which that gentleman displayed in the interests of the Club.

Billy Baxter, Andrew Bellairs, Jeff Richardson, Greg Champion, Jeffrey ‘Torch’ McGee and Ian Cover have each been cited for the performing arts, and to radio.

Their weekly show is currently heard on Fridays on Mornington Peninsula radio station 3MP, and the ACE Radio Network.

The ‘troupe’ were first heard on Saturday mornings on Melbourne station 3RRR in the early 1980s, alongside shows such as Lawyers, Guns and Money co-hosted by ‘Ross Stevenson’ (Ross Campbell) and Punter-ToPunter.

Jeff Richardson and Simon Whelan came up with the concept for thr show in 1981, and Billy Baxter provided the name.

■ Youth dance leaders will gather in Melbourne for a series of workshops and seminars during the Australian Youth Dance Festival being held at the Victorian College of the Arts and presented by Ausdance VIC. A limited number of tickets are on sale for the event on Thursday, July 7 from 3.30pm 8pm at the Martin Myer Arena, Victorian College of the Arts.

The forum draws on the importance of youth dance and arts practice, its contribution to a healthy arts ecology, and its impact in shaping the future. This is a rare opportunity for youth dance leaders to participate in a dialogue with eminent national practitioners.

Facilitated by contemporary dance artist and AYDF alumni Adam Wheeler, the panel includes Access and Inclusion advocate, CEO and Artistic Director of Arts Access Victoria Caroline Bowditch, dance maker and independent producer of Filipino descent Efren Pamilacan, Taiwanese-Australian dancer and choreographer Jennifer Ma, the Artistic Director of Hobart based youth dance company DRILL Performance Isabella Stone, and Executive Director of Ausdance VIC Michelle Silby.

Considered possibly the most dazzling icon of literary modernism, Love’s Bitter Mystery interrogates the events that propelled Joyce to leave Ireland for Europe and set him on a path that would transform the idea of the novel utterly.

My Self In That Moment ■ My Self in That Moment is a new work by Chamber Made featuring an ensemble of 49 tablets and a live solo vocalist, which is being presented from July 27 to 30 at The Substation, 1 Market St, Newport.

Exploring the fragmented and distributed self in the digital age, this electroacoustic work interrogates the themes surrounding identity, agency, ownership and the myriad systems that lie beneath the distribution of data.

Led by Chamber Made Artistic Director Tamara Saulwick and with composition by Peter Knight, My Self in That Moment expands on the company’s approach to experiment with different technologies that impact live performance and music forms.

My Self in That Moment has been created via a series of recorded interviews with the three vocalists: Jessica Aszodi,Alice Hui-Sheng Chang and Tina Stefanou, who reflect on what it means to be digitally captured and archived.

Tina Stefanou explains that a right-wing French media company took a soundbite of her voice, “For over four years, my voice was used as the introduction for a video news channel. I had no idea they were using it. It was very strange.”

My Self in That Moment is a polyphonic piece – there is one live voice amongst a polyphony of pre-recorded voices spread across the speakers with the 49 devices.

Audiences experience this work through a series of digital tablets that are networked to function as a visual and sonic ensemble. There is a live soloist performed alternately throughout the season by Jessica Aszodi and Tina Stefanou.

“This presentation style opens up exciting possibilities for the spatialisation of image and sound. It feels strangely subversive to take these ubiquitous personal objects and to turn them into a kind of musical instrument,” said Saulwick.

Peter Knight has composed a complex and spatial sound design from recorded voices.

“Each vocalist has a very different approach to voice. It has been exciting to create something using their distinctive palette of individual sounds and extended vocal techniques,” said Knight.

As the audience enters the darkened smokefilled room, they are confronted with a scene projecting horrific devastation.

We find Maggie living in a caravan alongside her home that has been burnt; to the ground; yet she is still stoically attending to her beloved vegetable garden.

Eve, her daughter, lives with her. Soon Lily, Maggie’s other daughter, arrives with her partner John (John Marc Desengano).

In a short space of time, the three females dramatically unleash their personal anger, their unresolved, uncomfortable, and uneasy relationship issues upon one another. The results are shockingly real and believable.

The use of theatre in the round structure provides an intimate setting, one where the audience feels strongly connected to what is going on right in front of them.

Spitzkowsky , the playwright, uses humour throughout the play to defuse tension and this comic relief, if only temporary, is warmly received by the audience.

Eve (Chanella Macri) and Lilly’s (Brigid Gallacher) characters are complex and both actors provide a magnificent balance in projecting the gamut of emotions demanded in their roles.

Maggie, played by Emily Tomlins. a seasoned and experienced actor, portrays the mother with conviction and strength.

As the play unfolds, we get to know Maggie as a resilient, stoic, hardened and damaged woman who has not given up.

This contemporary work is innovative and thought provoking, new and refreshingly different.

The total production team at Theatre Works and VIMH ought to be congratulated as the direction, staging, lighting – 'brilliant'.

■ NICA presents Eclipse, until Saturday, June 18 at the NICA National Circus Centre, Prahran, their first public-facing production since 2019.

Twelve students have triumphed over lockdowns to showcase acrobatics, cordelisse, trapeze, aerial hoop, tightwire, roue cyr, handstands, foot juggling and hula hoop.

Inspired by The Pandemic is a Portal by Arundhati Roy, Eclipse offers a gateway to a vision of what our future could, should, would and might just be.

Exploring unity, diversity, harmony, balance, trust, compromise, our humanity, and our fragility; what can we build and create together?

Devised with the graduating company, conceived by Sally Richardson (Director of SteamworksArts,Artistic Director of Maxima Circus), directed by Meredith Kitchen (Associate Director at South Australian Circus Centre) and in-house performance studies coordinator Ben Sheen (Director/Founder of Periscope Productions 2011 – Present), Eclipse is a cross-faculty collaboration with Film Students from Swinburne University of Technology Film and Television and makeup students from Melbourne Polytechnic.

Eclipse features the pairing of live opera vocals from Judith Dodsworth (Greta in Brian Howard’s Metamorphosis with Victoria Opera,and the title role, and Mercedes in Carmen for OzOpera), with a live electronic and percussive score by Louis Frere-Harvey (Command Q, Structural Dependency) and visual set and costume design by Eloise Kent and Angelica Ru (The Darkening Sky, TheatreWorks in 2022).

Bocelli visits Melb.

■ One of the world’s greatest classical stars, esteemed Tuscan tenor Andrea Bocelli, will appear in Melbourne with a 70-piece orchestra and 60-person choir, this November.

Bocelli will p[erform a selection of soulstirring arias, enduring love songs and beloved crossover hits.

He will appear at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday, November 2.

Les Miserables

■ Les Misérables - a most memorable experience performed by Centre/Stage at Geelong’s Costa Hall over a packed season. Les Misérables is a story of a prisoner that makes good, a love story and a French revolution in the mid 1800s. Adapted by Schonberg and Boublil from a Victor Hugo novel with English lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. The sheer magnitude of this production can be understood considering 29 main cast, 24 ensemble all backed by a 35 person orchestra. Director Martin Croft clearly demanded "complete individuals” all capable of bringing their uniqueness to each scene. I could not fault the cast, nor the orchestra that allowed crystal clear vocals, superbly balanced against the volume of the continual orchestral renditions. There were endless memorable moments, reaching great heights of emotions that captivated the audience. Nick Addison as lead Jean Valjean compellingly moved from a brutalised convict to a stately citizen, an honourable mayor, and finally to a world-weary father figure. Shaun Kingma faultlessly played the abominable Javert while determined to bring Valjean to justice, only to lose out with his own demise. Erin Cornell as Fantine was strong throughout particularly with a gripping rendition of I Dreamed A Dream. Barry Mitchell as Hotel Keeper, Thenardier with Michele Marcu as Madame Thenardier at times took centre stage, as did Storm Randall playing Marius, but not all at the expense of the rest of the main cast and ensemble, who to a person combined seamlessly. Challenging performances were well handled by the young children, little Cosette played by Jessie Grinter (with rotation by Samantha Parker), Gavroche – who met his maker at the barricade - played by Campbell Van Elst (with rotations Daniel Lim and Emerson Hudson- Collins) and young Eponine played by Evie Walsh (with rotation Zoe Baker). All elements of this production stood tall under the leadership of the Producer, David Greenwood, set and staging, properties, costumes, hair and wigs to sound and lighting, all in the hands of Award winning practitioners. Must mention that the wellbeing of the cast was in the capable paws of Luna, Leading Lady in the Wellbeing Team who loved a good chest rub, pats and cuddles during the months of rehearsals providing a soothing and therapeutic presence.

● Elena Kats-Chernin ■ Melbourne audiences can enjoy a special premiere of a new work by acclaimed Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin in a forthcoming concert by Melbourne Youth Orchestra.

Called Inner Angels, the premiere of this Kats-Chernin work was scheduled for the famous St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna in 2020, as part of an international concert tour by the talented young players of MYO. But the advent of COVID lockdowns put paid to that grand plan, but thankfully this beautiful work will finally get its premiere in the Angels, Dreams and Fantasies concert at Melbourne Recital Centre on Sunday June 26.

Kats-Chernin is thrilled that Melbourne audiences can finally hear this new work, which was specially commissioned by MYO in 2019.

Also on the program is Tchaikovsky’s Symphony number 4, the Carmen fantasy

by Bizet and Sarasate, featuring young solo violinist Leon Fei and the stirring Hungarian march by Berlioz.

Since 1967, Melbourne Youth Orchestra has provide a pathway for the best young orchestral musicians in Melbourne to practise and showcase their craft, and many go on to successful professional musical careers.

Love’s Bitter Mystery

■ Chapter titles structurally break up the narrative: act, scene, and dates frame the story either superimposed on-screen or wittily narrated through interjections by Moses (May Jasper).

With a screenplay written by playwright Steve Carey and director Carly Wilding, its shoestring budget occasionally shows through.

Husband and wife team, Gregory and Anna Vaisman, who set up Sputnik in 1995, are devastated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“We are particularly upset at the bombing of Odessa, our home town,” Gregory said.

“However, we are opposed to banning Russian culture. As the director of the New York Metropolitan Opera said, we should ‘ban Putin, not Pushkin’.”

Port Phillip Mayor, Cr Marcus Pearl, will introduce the concert. Martin Foley, the Member for Albert Park and Minister for Health. David Southwick, the Member for Caulfield, will also speak.

Over the past 27 years, Sputnik Russian Cultural and Television Association has produced over 2700 weekly Russian-language Sputnik television programs on Channel 31 and organised 16 concerts, each of which attracted more than 500 people.

Its first concert was held in 2008 to mark the re-opening of St Kilda Town Hall.

Sputnik received a festival grant from the City of Port Phillip to hold a 25th anniversary concert in 2020 but had to postpone due to the successive COVID lockdowns.

Sputnik President Gregory Vaisman arrived in Australia with his wife Anna Vaisman and one of their three children in 1991, part of a large group of Jews who left Ukraine in the dying days of the Soviet Union.

With 28 years’ experience as a telecommunications engineer, Gregory

“However, I came up against Keating’s ‘recession we had to have’ and couldn’t find a job. Nor could Anna, who was a science teacher.

That’s why we decided to set up Sputnik. It’s kept us busy – very busy – and we’ve been grateful for the opportunity. It’s been one way of paying back Australia,” he said.

“I was an amateur with a camera but had always wanted to make television. In 1958 – the year after the Sputnik satellite went up – I applied to the television faculty at university but although I got 23 out of a possible 25 marks in the entrance exams, I was excluded. It wasn’t until I went to a gathering of students who had passed the exam but didn’t get in that I discovered why – it was because I was Jewish. Everyone else in the room also happened to be Jewish.”

In 1995, the Sputnik team were able to take advantage of a federal grants program for ethnic television programs to set up their Russian-language program on Channel 31.

Over the years, they have secured grants from the Cities of Port Phillip and Glen Eira, the Victorian Multicultural Commission and other bodies. Sputnik is now the longest running program on C31.

‘Sputnik’, meaning ‘fellow-traveller’ or ‘spouse’ in Russian was an obvious choice for the program. The successful launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957 was also a tremendous source of national pride back in the USSR as it symbolised victory in the space race.

For the past 27 years Sputnik TV has been on a mission to educate the Russian-speaking community about life in Australia.

Gregory said his family loves it here in Australia.

“It’s wonderful to be part of a multicultural society that works. What we really miss is the music but we’re doing our best to make up for that by producing concerts for everyone to enjoy,” he said.

The concert will be recorded for broadcast on Sputnik which goes to air for 30 minutes, 4pm on Sundays, and is repeated on 4.pm on Thursdays.

One World – Israel Weekly is broadcast under the Sputnik banner on Thursdays at 1pm. The program attracts over 200,000 unique viewers per annum according to OZTAM figures.

Rourke’s Reviews Drive My Car

■ (MA). 179 minutes. Now available on DVD. Deserved winner of two Academy Awards this year (Best International Feature and Best Adapted Screenplay), Drive My Car is now available on DVD, and is truly mustsee viewing.

The story centres on renowned actor Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), who is married to screenwriter Oto (Reika Kirishima), and its a relationship that contains some particular oddities.

After an unexpected event, we now see Kafuku two years later, about to take on a theatre production of Uncle Vanya as director, with a multi-national cast which includes disgraced TV star Koji Takatsuki (Masaki Okada), who knew Oto. The producers inform Kafuku that he has to take on a chauffeur, a demand that initially upsets the seasoned performer, as he uses his drive time to practise various scripts via recorded audio cassette, read out by his wife.

His driver is Misaki (Toko Miura), a quiet, very guarded person who likes to keep her distance.

As rehearsals go on, the relationship develops between Kafuku and Misaki, who slowly open up about past grief, loss and guilt.

The short story by Haruki Murakami (whose work has been turned into other impressive films, such as Burning, Norwegian Wood and Tony Takitani) has been adapted with masterful skill by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Happy Hour, Asako I & II), and his direction is extraordinary, keeping everything beautifully low-key, and uses symbolism in a quiet, subtle manner.

Performances are outstanding.

Drive My Car does go three hours, but don’t let that deter you; this is a totally involving, very humane drama, and once you become fully immersed, the time goes by surprisingly quickly.

The Batman

■ (M). 175 minutes. Now available on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD. Wanting to dig deeper and darker than other adaptations of the DC comic creation, this admittedly intriguing production is hamstrung by a shallow script, ridiculous overlength, and a deliberate restraint to ensure maximum teen ticket sales, which is of course what happened.

Robert Pattinson plays Batman/Bruce Wayne, and the night time crime fighting is having a serious effect on both his mental health and views on human nature,

● Colin Farrell a situation that is worrying his butler, Alfred (Andy Serkis).

Gotham City is thrown into chaos when a mysterious psycho called The Riddler (Paul Dano) starts murdering notable politicians and law enforcers, who seem connected to a dark secret, a secret that may involve Wayne’s long dead parents.

Also complicating matters are Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), The Penguin (an unrecognisable Colin Farrell), and his mobster boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).

Co-writer/director Matt Reeves, who scored strongly the recent Planet Of The Apes sequels, wants to take Batman in a decidedly more adult direction, with a psychological dissection of Wayne and his nemesis, exploring how similar they are in many ways; damaged people who no longer trust the system and the people who run it, leading to a distortion of justice, causing violence that will eventually hurt the innocent.

But Reeves and his producers make the huge mistake of wanting to do it within an audience friendly, PG-13 (the movie is rated M here) framework, robbing the material’s potential of truly walking down and confronting the most harrowing, disturbing aspects of modern society.

This film really needed to be rated either MA or R. As such, the script never digs very deep, and for a movie that runs almost three hours, that leaves quite a huge hole, one that is never satisfyingly filled.

Pattinson is okay, but all he really has to do is look glum, while Kravitz limited acting range cannot rise above a badly written role, complete with risible dialogue, and the moments of sexual tension between her and Pattinson is extremely clumsy.

Everyone else does what’s asked of them, but their characters are sketchy at best.

There is unnecessary narration (reminiscent of the one tacked on the theatrical cut of Blade Runner), and dialogue too often solely exists to spoon feed the audience, a la V ForVendetta.

Though slick, The Batman is so obsessed with surface level grimness, that it forgets to examine the gritty, unsettling details underneath, resulting in an incredibly frustrating viewing experience.

Perfect sleep time

■ How much sleep is the perfect amount? Seven hours of sleep is the ‘Goldilocks’ amount for people in their middle age and upwards, according to new research out of the University of Cambridge in England.

In the study examining data from nearly half a million British and Chinese people aged 38 to 73, participants were asked about their sleeping patterns, mental health and wellbeing. They also took part in a series of cognitive tests.

Researchers report that both insufficient and excessive sleep duration were associated with impaired cognitive performance, such as processing speed, visual attention, memory and problem-solving skills.

Seven hours of sleep per night was the optimal amount of sleep for cognitive performance. It was also good for mental health, with people experiencing more symptoms of anxiety and depression, and worse overall wellbeing, if they reported sleeping for longer or shorter durations.

Researchers say one reason is that when ‘deep’ sleep is disrupted, it can cause a build-up of a protein called amyloid that can cause ‘tangles’ in the brain similar to some forms of dementia.

AnAssistant Principal is suing the Virginia school board after she was forced out of her job for using the words “coloured people” during mandatory “anti-racism training”.

She said it was a slip of the tongue, as she was protesting mandatory anti-racism training which she claimed discriminated against White people. Of course, she was called a “racist bitch” by a colleague.

■ “Security is not allowed to touch me,” says shameless Manhattan shoplifter ‘Jackie’, as Woke Big Apple sees major crimes rocket 44 per cent.

She accused the store security guard of “manhandling” her when she stole fabric softener. She was banned from all of the stores in the chain. The proud shoplifter blamed the stores for all shoplifting incidents and said shoplifters are the victims. Folks, you can’t make this stuff up!

Chip shortage until 2024

■ Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger warned that the semiconductor shortage will last until 2024. Certain manufacturing tools remain unavailable, which threatens to constrain chipmaking capacity, the executive told CNBC. “That’s part of the reason that we believe the overall semiconductor shortage will now drift into 2024, from our earlier estimates in 2023, just because the shortages have now hit equipment and some of those factory ramps will be more challenged,” Gelsinger explained.

“We’ve really invested in those equipment relationships,” Gelsinger continued while discussing the diversification of chipmaking away from Asia, “but that will be tempering the buildout of capacity for us and everybody else, but we believe we’re positioned better than the rest of the industry.”

A study found that 46 per cent of Gen Z workers feel “fatigued” after a day at the office. They complained that their workload and the stress left them feeling drained. 40 per cent of Millennials said the same, while only 19 per cent of Baby Boomers agreed. Given what our colleges and universities are graduating these days, is anyone surprised?

■ Doctors may soon be writing a very simple prescription to improve your mental health: “get off social media!” A new study finds avoiding social media platforms for just one week significantly improved a person’s well-being and also lowered levels of both anxiety and depression.

A team from the University of Bath found that social media users can sometimes spend up to nine hours on their favourite platforms in a single week. This includes endlessly scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok. Previous studies have found conflicting data when it comes to the benefits and harms of social media. While some reports have disputed claims that social media is addictive (especially for children), others have noted up to 50 harmful effects of constantly browsing these platforms.

A new survey finds 64 per cent are fearful of being authentic around others in the workplace. In fact, seven in 10 say they adopt an entirely different personality when they’re at work, compared to their normal persona at home. The poll of more than 1900 American workers, commissioned by JobSage, also found that nearly two in three employees (64 per cent ) have experienced some sort of backlash from their colleagues when a private detail of their life became public knowledge.

■ Lyon Himan Green was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, 100 years ago.

He was the son of Russian Jewish immigrants and he was known as Hyman during his school years.

He started acting in drama productions whilst attending Queens University in Kingston.

After graduation Hyman accepted a fellowship at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City.

He returned home two years later and started working as a news reader at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation where he became known as ‘The Voice of Canada’. He was now using the stage name of Lorne Greene.

In 1938 Lorne married Rita Hands and they had two children. During the war years Lorne served in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

After the war he returned to radio and invented a stopwatch that worked backwards to allow announcers to gauge how much time they had time available to close a program.

In 1953 he was in a Broadway production of The Prescott Proposal and co-starring with Katharine Cornell at the Broadhurst Theatre.

Lorne scored roles in television dramas and then appeared in films such as The Silver Chalice, Autumn Leaves, Peyton Placeand The Trap.

After a guest role in the television series Wagon Train he was asked to play ‘Ben Cartwright’ in the new western Bonanza.

His hair was silver and he was perfectly cast

Lorne Green

He was a father to three sons living on a ranch called The Ponderosa sometime after the American Civil War. The sons were originally played by Michael Landon, Pernell Roberts and Dan Blocker.

Elvis Presley was a big fan of the show and visited the set.

Following his divorce from Rita he married Nancy Deale in 1961 and they had a son.

Lorne was earning a huge salary from Bonanza and became extremely wealthy through investments in real estate and other projects.

He built a house in Arizona which was a

Lorne appeared as a guest on The Dean Martin Show. Dean and Lorne sang songs and did some ad-lib dialogue as they sat on two very undisciplined horses. It was brilliant television Dean said he wanted to be on Bonanza and Lorne replied that he would make a great guest star.

Dean quipped, "I don't want to be a guest star I want to be a son." It was hilarious.

After Bonanza finished Lorne went straight into a new television crime series Griff where he played a private detective.

He had a small role in the film Earthquake playing opposite Gregory Peck and Ava Gardiner.

Lorne found fame again when he starred as ‘Commander Adama’ in the futuristic television series Battlestar Galactica for several years.

He was a guest star on many television shows such as The Love Boat, Highway To Heaven and Police Squad. His last acting role was as a lawyer in Dallas.

Lorne Greene died in Santa Monica in 1987 at the age of 72 from pneumonia complications following surgery for an ulcer.

Distant Shores at Linden New Art

Distant Shores.

A new exhibition project co-produced by Melbourne/Naam based photographic artist Morganna Magee and curator Anna Monea.

Developed in collaboration with members from the local community, Distant Shores combines documentary photography, family photos and written testimony to tell the story of the migrant experience through themes of cultural connection, memory, longing and loss.

For Distant Shores, Magee and Monea worked with recently arrived migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum based in the city of Port Phillip municipality to create a series of photographic profiles celebrating cultural heritage.

Exploring each participants cultural ties to their homeland in the wake of the connection imposed by the pandemic, Magee presents a personal image belonging to the participant alongside their portrait, which, captured by Magee, recreates the original photograph in an Australian context.

Exhibition closes Sunday July 31.

Bruce Munro: From Sunrise Road.

The Arts

with Peter Kemp Heide will present Bruce Munro: From Sunrise Road, the first museum exhibition in Australia of the work of internationally celebrated English/ Australian artist Bruce Munro, best known for his interactive, large-scale light installations inspired largely by his interest in shared huma experience.

The exhibition combines spectacular indoor and outdoor experimental works, with intimate knowledge story pieces, revealing the depth of the artist’s practice and the breadth of his sources, from personal and philosophical to the literary and spiritual.

Situated across Heide’s main galleries and sculpture park, the exhibition will present more than 20 key indoor works and an immersive outdoor light installation designed specially for the site that will activate Heide’s iconic parklands at night.

For the first time the museum will extend its opening hours until 8pm from Thursday to Sunday throughout the exhibition for visitors to experience Munro’s outdoor work after dark.

Exhibition opens June 25 and closes October 16.

‘Monstrously severe’ 10-year sentences ■ Ten-year sentences of transportation were given to nine local Aboriginal men in 1841 after they were found guilty of robbery at Muddy Creek (Yea).

The Port Phillip Patriot newspaper (Jan. 7, 1841) reported: “The sittings of the Court of Quarter Sessions commenced on Monday, and terminated yesterday.

“The only case of any general interest which came be fore the Court was the following : “Tarruk-munnin, Nandermiel, Loger-ma-koon, Piengingoon, Kowin-yowlett, Waverong, and four other Aborigines were put to the bar, before a remarkably full bench of magistrates, charged with robbing a station belinging to Mr. P. Snodgrass, on the Muddy Creek, of some flour, mutton, nnd other articles.

“The information contained three counts.

“The first charging the prisoner Tarrak-munnin as a principal in the attack on the station; the second charging the other prisoners as accessories ; the third charging all the prisoners generally. : Mr. Assistant Protector Thomas, and a young man named Davis were sworn to in terpret: Mr. De Villiers was also subsequently sworn as interpreter.

“The Crown Prosecutor, in addressing the jury, said he should make no lengthened statements as to the circumstances connected with the assault and robbery, or attempt in any degree to aggravate the case against the prisoner.

“They were ignorant of our laws, and to a great extent unprotected. He should therefore merely state to the jury what was the law in reference to stealing with violence, and proceed to call witnesses to substantiate the charge.

“Francis McCarrick stated that on the 17 th March last, a party of Aborigines came to his hut, many of them armed with guns and pistols.

“He identified six of the prisoners as being present on the occasion.

“They pushed him and a man named. Deighton into the hut. He succeeded, in getting outside.

“One of the prisoners held him and another attempted to get his gun away.

“A black named Winberry said he commanded the party. They pointed their guns at them.

“Deighton at last got out, and called upon Winberry to protect them.

“Winberry said he was no good, "he" (mean ing Deighton,) " too much yabber to mas ter. He asked for sheep, we told him we could not give them.

“He said the sheep eat the grnss belonging to his kangaroo, and white fellow took kangaroo, and what-for not give him sheep.

“He then said some thing in his own language to the blacks and one of them fired - into the air.

“Winberry then said all gone sulky, and I went to my sheep.

“They afterwards took some flour and mutton.

“On cross-examination by Mr. Barry for the prisoners, he said that when they came up he told them if they booed white man he would boo them.

“The same blacks had been at the station may times before, but they had always been peaceable.

“They had visited the station

districts. “These ruffians were placed in irons and deposited in the jail, including Jagga Jaggaor Jacky Jacky and Billy Hamilton.

“The remain der were locked up during Sunday and the night in the newly erected store of Mr. Rattenbury, at the back of the new church, being placed under the custody of only two constables.

“The consequence was, as might have been anticipa ted, from having so slender a guard, that some thirty or forty of the men effected their escape during the night.

“They had been deprived of all their tomahawks and other implements, but nevertheless they contrived to undermine the foundation of the building, and excavated a hole sufficiently large to enable one man at a time to creep through.

“It seems that when every thing was ready for escape, they had sufficient sagacity to resort to a ruse for the purpose of withdraw ing the attention of the constables from the spot, which was on one side of the store, whence they meant to effect their release.

Lecture on Australian Aborigines ■ A lecture on the subject of Australian Aborigines was delivered

by Mr Stone Parker to the John Knox Young Men’sAssociation in 1854.

His beliefs, perhaps challenging for the times, were reported in The Banner: “The history of civilization in Australia is very recent. Not a century has passed since the civilizing, the Anglo-Saxon race looked upon its shores, and took possession of its soil;—not a fourth of that century has elapsed since the first house was raised in Victoria.

“It was a strange land English men then first looked upon—a land of sunny skies and fertile soil; animals un known in older worlds made unwieldy gambols in her virgin prairies; birds of strange note and gaudy plumage sported in the air; trees, whose hard unflexile leaves were ignorant of winter, and had kept the trunks below clad in the same garb for centuries, grew on the plains; and quaint flowers of rare beauty welcomed the gazing eye.

“But of the chang ing, ennobling hand of man there was no trace.

No house looked through its windows on the fair skies or the tall green trees.

“No towns reared their heads, where men did business one with another, selling, buying, giving money, taking money.

“The ground lay untilled and virgin, ignorant of spade or plough or harrow, even as it had been in Noah’s days.

“But though civilization wet awanting, man capable of civilization was not awanting. Australia was not unpeopled long centuries before Captain Cook took possession in the name of George the Third, or the first convict ship landed its rather ques tionable population at Sydney Cove. And among the many other strange creature

which civilised man found awaiting him in New Holland, —among the green parrots and black swans, the kangaroos, the emus, the opossums, that struck the stranger on his arrival, he found one creature whom, lower doubtless than himself in all attainments, he was forced to recognise as a fellow-man and a brother—one who, as he began to understand by and bye, could speak a language as fit for interpreting all the wants of the savage as his own more refined English was able to express his own,—one who had laws, though they might be of the rudest, which he was bound to obey, rules binding on that degraded heathen as the moral law was binding on the Christian.

“Or if his English visitor had learned to define man, as he has been defined, as a tool-making and tool using animal, lo ! this poor dark brother had nvented for himself, and was able to use, instruments which no then extant civilization, could have given him, and could assert his right to be regarded as a man even in this light.

“Yea ! However low in the scale of humanity—however ignorant, darkened, degraded he might be, this poor Australian was no brute ; he also was a man and a brother— a weaker, less cultivated, deeplier sunken brother.

“We are afraid that “white fellow” be haved rather cruelly at first to his darker compatriot. We fear that some of our earlier settlers were slow to believe, or to act on the belief, that those degraded abori gines were men after all, demanding from them the exercise of the Christian law, to “do unto others as we would‘they should do unto us.” Wo doubt whether the poor Australian fared much better sometimes at the hands of his more civilised fellow-man, than the kangaroo or the wild turkey,” The Banner reported.

Life is just a game

■ Melbourne musician Aaron Schembri has collaborated with former Melbourne FC legend turned musician Russell Robertson to raise awareness for Motor Neurons Disease.

Written by Schembri, ‘Life Is Just A Game’ was released on June 13, with a launch at Federation Square.

Coinciding with theAFLBig Freeze Round on the Queen’s Birthday, it was part of the Neale Daniher Walk, right before the Melbourne v Collingwood game.

Completely not-for-profit, the single release and funds raised will go towards raising awareness and fighting MND.

Great afternoon at Yarra Valley

■ Picturesque Yarra Valley was the racing venue on Monday June 6 and although the weather was ordinary, a great program was held with patrons enjoying a great afternoon in the warm comfort of the Grandstand Dining area.

■ Heathcote horseman Jim O’Sullivan, a multiple Inter-Dominion winning trainer/driver was successful in taking the Yarra Glen Bakehouse Pace over 2150 metres with 8Y0 Live Or DieArt Bubble gelding Neander Guy who has been a great money earner for the stable.

It a real family affair, Neander Guy, raced by wife Terresa and driven by daughter Shannon, Neander Guy starting outside the front line better known as a speedster was taken back from outside the front line to settle the rear as Tasmanian visitor Border Cross led from gate three.

When the hot favourite Jemstone Glory (gate six) led up the outside division, Neander Guy followed him forward and after angling three wide on the final bend, the pair engaged in a head and head struggle all the way up the straight, with Neander Guy prevailing by a half neck returning a rate of 2-01.2. Border Cross held down third 9.2 metres back.

■ Moyreisk co-trainers Barry and Ashley Ainsworth landed the IGA Liquor 3Y0 Maiden Pace over 2150 metres with Danny BoucheaPalkia filly Boutika who was making her 10th race appearance.

Given a sweet trip by Ashley from the pole trailing the roughie Perfect Peak which flew away from gate five, Boutika travelled kindly before making full use of the sprint lane to gain the day by 5.2 metres over the pacemaker, with Da Prez battling on gamely for third albeit 36.1 metres away. The mile rate 2-05.4.

■ Kurunjang (Melton) training duo Maree and John Caldow snared the 1650 metre Ashmores Smash Repairs Vicbred Pace with Azterian, a 4Y0 gelded son of Sportswriter and Neishars Jet .

Beginning with a great turn of speed from outside the front line, Azterian was unable to cross polemarker Groom leaving him exposed.

With John able to angle to the back of the leader in the final circuit for a breather when Lotakevi couldn’t keep up, Azterian angled to the outside on turning and Azterian answered the call to return a strong half neck margin in 1-57.1 over Groom, with Myagi Boy (one/one) last lap third 15 metres back.

■ Torrumbarry part-owner/trainer Faye McEwan does a great job with her trotters and 4Y0 Skyvalley-Misty Elle gelding Watch And Act registered his 4th victory in 39 outings when leading for the majority of the 2150 metre journey of the Eastern Generator Hire Trotters Handicap.

Driven by underrated Kilmore reinsman Josh Duggan, Watch And Act began very fast from barrier four to lead and couldn’t be caught, reaching the wire by 3.9 metres in advance of Hes Themightyspin (barrier six) which trailed.

Meghan (barrier five) was third 1.9 metres away after following the pair. The mile rate 2-06.3.

Debut at Shepp.

■ Shepparton raced on Tuesday and Gillieston trainer Russ Thomson combined with Josh Aiken to land the Guardline Security Services Trotters Mobile over 2190 metres with 4Y0 Love You-Cloud Chaser mare Loves In The Air which was making her race debut.

Trailing the leader Starlight Storm (gate four) from the pole, Loves In The Air received a charmed passage before easing off the leaders back in the last lap to race clear approaching the home turn. Going strongly on straightening, Loves In The Air bred and raced by wife Pauleen recorded a 10.9 metre margin over Kyvalley Surfrider (gate seven) which ran home well from a mile back, with Berriesandcherries (four back the markers most of the race) third 1.5 metres away. Change of luck for top trainer

■ It was great to see Queensland trainer, David Van Dyke, have a change of luck in Queensland winning the Oaks with his top three- year old filly, Gypsy Goddess.

It’s marvellous how you can be on top of the world one minute, then on the bottom the next.

Throughout his career David, has always had some good horses in his stables.

Going back to the outstanding, Yankee Rose, a Group One winner and a good third in a Cox Plate. One of the best to race when in full flight.

In recent times he had the good galloper, Alligator Blood, who took all before him with Vandyke, culminating in winning the Magic Millions three- year old classic.

After Alligator Blood’s win, stewards found drugs were found in his system, and the horse and connections lost the race.

It shattered David, he couldn’t believe it, but he lost the Magic Millions event, plus the prize money worth plenty.

This knocked him around badly, as he had a giant reputation, in the harbour state.

He lost his best, Alligator Blood, who was transferred to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott in Sydney.

It took Alligator Blood to bounce back after that, and was a good thing beaten in the BRC Sprint over 1300 metres at Eagle Farm back on May 28.

He came from a mile back flashing down the outside to just get beaten, by Soxagon.

Then the Sun started to shine again for David, with his top filly, Gypsy Goddess, winning the Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm.

This took Gypsy Goddess to her sixth win from only nine starts, with two seconds and a third.

She is by the Victoria Derby winner, Tarzino, trained by top Victorian trainer, Mick Price.

Gypsy Goddess was handled superbly by former Western Australian champion rider, Willie Pike.

I feel down the track a bit, Gypsy Goddess, is showing plenty of staying potential and could run in a Caulfield or Melbourne Cup. The Cox Plate is not out of the question.

Best of luck to David and the team with the Gypsy.

Riding for disabled

■ Once again it is great to see Racing Victoria extending its support for the Riding for the Disabled Association.

This once again provides new opportunities for retired thoroughbred horses and provide RDAV centres with additional horses to use in the therapeutic equestrian activities.

As part of the agreement, Racing Victoria, will commit a further $50,000 over the next 12 months (on top of its $50,000 contribution last year).

This will allow the RDAV to deliver and expand its personally enriching riding programs and to accommodate additional horses at its 35 centres across Victoria.

■ News that former, Racing Victoria Chief Executive, Bernard Saundry, would take over as the new Chief Executive of industry radio station RSN is a big win for racing.

Saundry spent time in a similar role over the last five years with the New Zealand thoroughbred racing after his time at Racing Victoria.

He starts his new role at RSN on July 11.

Racing Victoria took a controlling stake in RSN, acquiring a 72.5 per cent ownership in the radio broadcaster from the three metropolitan clubs and Country Racing Victoria.

Harness racing and Greyhound Racing Victoria share the remaining stake.

Saundry also played a big part in the establishment of Racing Victoria’s broadcaster Racing.Com. RSN Chairman, John Stewart, said: “We

have recently embarked on a review of our operations and programming”.

He added that one of Bernard’s first priorities will be to complete that important work and implement delivering an informative and engag-
