Regional Round-Up $50,000 for groups

■ Mansfield Shire Council has awarded a total of $50,000 to three community groups: Tolmie Community Social Club, Merton Campdraft and the Goughs Bay Area Progress Association through its Outlying Communities Infrastructure Fund.

The Tolmie Community Social Club was awarded $20,000 to rebuild their existing offices to create a multipurpose facility. The redeveloped facility will host the Social Club and Tolmie Sports. All-weather facilities will be available for campers and local users of the Tolmie Recreation Reserve.

The Merton Campdraft Club was awarded $20,000 to install permanent steel livestock yards, a loading race and cut out pen at the Merton Recreation Reserve. The yards and equipment will support campdrafting and other rural sporting events.

The Goughs Bay Area Progress Association was awarded $10,000 to install a 4x4 metre skillion roof shelter of the newly developed Goughs Bay Recreation Reserve.

The grant was open to community groups for projects that would build, develop or enhance local infrastructure in outlying communities. Eligible groups could apply for grants of up to $20,000 each, with the total grant pool funded by Council with a $50,000 budget.

Mayor Cr James Tehan congratulated the grant recipients and thanked all applicants.

“These projects bring long-term value and benefit to our communities. The contribution of these funds provides a foundation from which communities contribute and grow together to create infrastructure and facilities that support their unique needs,” said Cr Tehan.

“We received an incredibly high calibre of applications this year. Seven quality applications were received seeking a total of $132,000. It’s hard to make a decision between such worthwhile projects.”

Council will continue to work with applicants who did not receive funding in this round. Unsuccessful applicants will be offered feedback to strengthen their grant applications and opportunities for potential future funding will be explored.

Pets have a price

■ Strathbogie Shire Council is reminding pet owners that registrations are due for renewal by April 10.

Residents with registered pets will soon receive a notice in the mail with their annual registration fee invoice.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said it was also a timely reminder for anyone who may have recently welcomed a new cat or dog to the home, or if you’ve recently moved to the area, you must register your pet with Council.

“It is an easy process to register your pet with Council. All you need to do is visit our Council offices at 109A Binney St, Euroa, complete a pet registration form, and pay your fee with our friendly customer service team,” Cr Binks said.

“Cats and dogs aged three months or older must be registered with Council and they must be micro-chipped prior to registration.”

Takeover at Shepp.

■ The ABC and VicHealth’s youth program Takeover, which gives young people a voice to tell their stories from their communities, is moving outside the city for the first time, with Shepparton to host the event in May. Takeover Shepparton will cover the Greater Shepparton area and will give young people a platform to share their experiences with their community and communities across Australia, through local and national ABC networks.

The project will work with high school students to give them the skills to develop stories about what it’s like to grow up in their region. At least 30 students will then be selected to have their story broadcast across the ABC and to take part in the Takeover Shepparton Youth Summit from May 16, where they will develop ideas to make their community an even better place for young people.

Waste plan say

■ More than 7000 survey results from Yarra Ranges residents will help the local Council to shape its future waste services, as it prepare for the State Government’s new bin policy.

The State Government has released its Recycling Victoria Policy, setting targets for reducing waste over the coming 10 years.

These targets include changing the waste services delivered to community members from Council, adding in: ■ A food and garden organics (FOGO) services for all households, rather than putting food scraps in the landfill bin ■ A glass recycling service for all households, separate from the regular recycling bin ■ Changing bin lids to match standardised, state-wide colours for services.

Ahead of these changes, whichthe Council is looking to introduce next year, Yarra Ranges Shire surveyed the community about current services and how these new services could be rolled out.

Mural makeover

■ Panthers, flora and fauna could soon transform the Tooborac Recreation Reserve with input being sought on two mural designs.

Artist Eric Sesto grew up in Tooborac and has created a number of murals in Melbourne and overseas. He approached Mitchell Shire Council with the idea and draft designs last year after returning to Tooborac from overseas during the COVID pandemic.

Following endorsement from the Tooborac Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, Mitchell Shire Council is now seeking community input on the two designs as well as two locations near the Tooborac Mechanics Institute Hall – the toilet block and the water tank.

The designs feature Black Panthers who are rumoured to have roamed the hills from Puckapunyal Army Base as well as kangaroos, rosellas and native plants set amongst the iconic boulders of Tooborac.

Road obstrictions

■ Murrindindi Council is attending to the removal of fencing, cages and other obstructions belonging to an adjoining property owner, from a section of the road reserve at Cobham Rd , Kinglake. The full width of the road should have full public access, it says.

Trouble in Liberal leader’s own office

● Matthew Guy’s office problems revealed in The Local Paper Manningham Edition which covers his local electorate of Bulleen.

■ Liberal leader Matthew Guy wants to be the Premier of the State of Victoria. Before he wins that macro job, he might need to demonstrate he can manage the micro - that he can adequately supervise his own office.

Last week started with a snippet in the ‘Baz’ column of the Sunday Herald Sun that Matthew Guy’s office had recruited former Age gossip columnist Suzanne Carbone as a senior political adviser to work alongside his Chief-of-Staff Mitch Catlin.

That raised a few eyebrows from seasoned political observers who had followed Ms Carbone’s writings at the left-leaning Age. Her past Tweets had praised Premier Daniel Andrews, and had a dig at Matthew Guy. In another social media post, Ms Carbone criticised a Liberal Party identity who thought “Facebook is a sewer to spew homophobic and sexist tirades”.

A Google search would have revealed a Melbourne Observer clipping with Ms Carbone pictured beaming alongside Labor Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

“You have to wonder if Matthew’s office did any background checking at all,” said a senior Liberal Party source, on condition of anonymity. “There are photos. Does Matthew need someone to draw him a picture?”

Within the week, Ms Carbone had left the Liberal Party leader’s employ, reportedly “resigning”. Her personal Twitter and Facebook pages have since been restricted.

Earlier, The Local Paper had tried to contact another of Matthew Guy’s senior staffers ‘Trish’ at his Bulleen electorate office at Doncaster. ‘Trish’ had called earlier to place some advertising in The Local Paper’s Manningham Edition.

Mr Guy’s office phone was diverted to Trish’s mobile number. She said Mr Guy’s office would no longer proceed with any advertising with The Local Paper.

Healesville Sanctuary had a surprise visitor:former Prime Minister of the UK, Theresa May (see picture at right). Lady May was able to spend a few hours at the world-renowned sanctuary. Lady May was tickled pink to get up close and personal with koalas and hand feed Kangaroos. Lady May toured in a private capacity while in Australia, strongly advocating for women in leadership and for climate change policy, both of which are quite progressive in the UK. Eildon, MLA Cindy McLeish said it was an honour to host Lady May in the Yarra Valley. “It was a privilege to show Lady May the fantastic facilities and uniqueness of Healesville Sanctuary.”

RSPCA Victoria is dismayed by this week’s announcement that the 2022 duck hunting season will proceed in March, which it says will be causing injury, pain and suffering to thousands of native ducks. The announcement of a full-length season and a bag limit allowing hunters to shoot four birds per day will further impact declining waterbird populations. RSPCA Victoria says it is disappointed in the Victorian Government’s decision to allow the 2022 duck hunting season to take place, despite animal welfare concerns, declining waterbird abundance and lack of support within the community for duck hunting and is urging a review of the decision.

What is the likelihood of someone released from jail going back to prison? It is almost a one-in-two chance. In Victoria, 44.2 per cent of prisoners released during 2017–18 returned to prison within two years (to 2019–20).

■ Mitchell Shire Council says it was disappointed Resources Minister Jaala Pulford failed to recognise community opposition and input into the proposed Beveridge North West quarry in Parliament on Thursday.

The Council has written to Ms Pulford asking for a response on three key points: ■ Whether the local community input and clear opposition to the quarry will be respected and considered through any future processes, irrespective of whether they are planning process under the authority of the Minister for Planning or processes under the Resources portfolio; and ■ That these processes are and will be genuine, authentic and transparent; and ■ A commitment to the community that the decision regarding whether a quarry will be approved in this location has not

The Council says theree has been an overwhelming community response to the Victorian Planning Authority’s public consultation on the Beveridge North West Precinct Structure Plan.

The Council understands the MinisterialAdvisory Committee has received more than 1040 submissions, the majority of which, Council believes, were against the quarry.

“The community’s voice is very clear, they do not want this quarry,” saide a Council representative.

“The quarry was not included in the original Precinct Structure Plan future urban structure that went out for consultation and wasn’t part of the conversation between the Victorian Planning Authority and the community at that time.

“We hope the community’s voice is heard through the current Precinct Structure Plan and planning permit process.

Mitchell Council raised concerns with Planning Minister Richard Wynne in November last year, concerned that the quarry was a ‘done deal’.

Festival at S. Morang ■ The City of Whittlesea’s Community Festival will return to South Morang on March 25 -26 with a line-up of live music, theatre performances, visual art, creative workshops, and family-friendly activities.

The festival’s theme, arts on the northern edge, celebrates the City’s cultural diversity.

The two-day event will showcase talented artists and performers including Mahalia Barnes + The Soul Mates, Rebel: a circus and music extravaganza, Georgia Fields, The Big Lost Band ensemble, The Alphabet of Awesome Science, and more.

■ Two teenagers have been arrested after stolen vehicle attempted to evade police in the northern subrubs.

Officers patrolling the Western Ring Road sighted Kia Cerato about 12.35am on Wednesday (Feb. 23).

Police attempted to intercept the vehicle which sped away.

The Air Wing followed the vehicle as it travelled through residential streets in Fawkner and Coburg before stop sticks were successfully deployed in Queens Pde. The Kia continued to be driven on its rims along Sydney Rd and Mahoney’s Rd before the driver lost control and crashed into a tree near the intersection with Edgars Rd in Thomastown.

A 16-year-old Thomastown boy and 16year-old Coburg boy were arrested and taken to hospital for observation.

Police are still searching for a third individual who fled the scene on foot.

Diamo courts re-open

■ Netball has made a big return following the completion of the $2.52 million upgrade of the Diamond Creek Netball Courts.

Nillumbik Shire Council completed the project in time for this month’s 2022 season launch.

Works included replacing the eight asphalt-based courts with an acrylic plexi-pave finish, and installing new lighting, seating and shelters, ensuring the courts are compliant to Netball Victoria standards.

Mayor Cr Frances Eyre said the courts were an important regional sporting hub.

$540 million shortfall

■ The Northern Councils Alliance is calling on the Victorian Government to formally defer its plans to stop paying rates on social housing, as announced by Premier Daniel Andrews.

The Alliance says the outcome would create a $540 million shortfall in muchneeded funding for councils over 10 years.

The Alliance includes the Mayors and Chief Executive Officers of Banyule, Darebin, Hume, Mitchell, Moreland, Nillumbik and Whittlesea Councils and represents over one million people.

A decision to stop paying rates on 70,000 social housing dwellings in metro Melbourne and regional cities would come as a hit to our communities, and divert funds from everyday services like waste management, maternal and child health and parks, said an Alliance statement.

It would also profoundly impact Melbourne’s north, which is home to some of the highest proportions of social housing and most socio-economically disadvantaged communities in Victoria.

“The NCA is extremely concerned the government’s current proposal will lead to northern Melbourne communities being unfairly burdened with increased rates bills and less services – all to subsidise new social housing developments in other parts of Victoria with lower social housing stock.

“With Melbourne’s north fore-

casted to remain one of Australia’s fastest growing regions, it is likely that new developments in the region will be required to contribute a significant portion to the Social andAffordable Housing Contribution if it is introduced.

“The NCA would welcome assurances that any new revenue generated through the proposed levy will be directly invested into the communities from which it came,” the statement said.

Busy March for Rebels ■ A Men’s Health Information Evening with guest speakers on several topics will be held from 6.30pm for 7m start this Friday (Mar. 4) at the Alexandra Football Netball Club social rooms.

A new football recruit for the 2022 season is Lano Hoxhalli, 21 years of age and living in Burnside.

Lano started playing footy in 2012 with a few mates, initially never playing as his Albanian family background didn’t really invest in playing sport.

After missing the Grand Final in 2016 due to a broken collarbone, Lano became more serious as he improved in 2017, winning his biggest achievement which was runners up Best and Fairest, going on to finish third in 2018.

● Lano Hoxhalli Lano continued his development which saw him win the Best and Fairest in 2019.

Unable to play in 2020 due to COVID and 2021 saw an injury riddled season.

Having been at Caroline Springs all his life, tough decisions had to be made for a new challenge and a fresh environment brings him to Alexandra.

Yea ladies win challenge ■ Wednesday saw the men play an early stableford round before preparing a feast for the ladies – winners of the Gender Challenge 2022 – at lunchtime.

The Ladies played a social 9 hole two person Ambrose before lunch.

Men’s winner was Michael Willis (12) wiith 37 points from Brian Priestley (27) on 36 from Bill Dredge (19) on CB. Fourth was Russ Wealands (21) with 35 from fifth Brendan Chenhall (12) with 34 points.

NTP on the 18th was Bill Dredge and the Club Award went to Steve Rumney.

Thanks for a splendid lunch goes to Gary Pollard and Bob Glenister as head chefs for the men. The ladies did enjoy.

This year was an exciting year, the competition was up to the last day. Thankfully we lived up to the expectation. Congratulations girls, a job well done.

The boys did not disappoint by any means think some of us could take a few cooking lessons. Thank you so much boys an awesome menu: mussels in sweet chilli and coconut cream sauce the entre, poached chicken cooked to perfection on barbeque topped with a sauce plus ham, vegetables and salad of choice.

We thank the club for such an enjoyable competition and ending. It really brings a lot more players to the golf course. We love it and totally recommend it to all other clubs.

The boys had their own competition for the day. Girls had a two-person Ambrose, only 9 holes. Winners on the day were Cindy Armstrong and Cheryl Roberts. Runners-up: Miranda Gill and Penny Britton.

On Thursday three girls went to Alexandra for their bowl and Yea was pretty pleased with the results. Winning Team Marysville 2, a score of 106. Yea came in with 103 so were not unhappy. Team: Adrianne Anglin, Vicky Butler and Karen Sangster. Adrianne also won a NTP.

● Cooks Gary Pollard, Bob Glenister and Ladies Captain Jan Wealands, Penny Britton and Di Holdsworth Saturday saw 24 men play a stableford round at Yea Golf Club. Conditions were good but some rain soon would be helpful to assist the watering program.

Playing off 11 with 77 off the stick and 40 points was Brian Simmons, to win from Rick Wills (9) with 39 points. John Phillips (21) with 37 points was third from Anthony Coleman (7) on CB with Gary Pollard fifth on CB from Michael Spagnolo (6) with 36 points.

Malcolm Bett was NTP on the 18th and Russ Akers won the Club Award.

In the Ladies Competition Cindy Armstrong (35) won with 33 points from Christine Simmons (21) with 31 points. Judi Newman (47) was third with 30.

Local Sport Tree logs donated

● Lilydale and Mooroolbark Pony Club, located in Yering, has received 15 logs donated by the Council.

■ The Lilydale and Mooroolbark Pony Club, located in Yering, is jumping for joy after Yarra Ranges Council donated 15 logs from last year’s June storm to the club for use as equestrian obstacles.

Yarra Ranges Council has been actively engaging with the community to determine ways in which logs that are too big to be milled can be repurposed to benefit the community into the future.

Club President Julie Lithgow said the new jumps will help ensure the club is offering the best equipment for its members into the future.

“Yarra Ranges Council gave us 15 logs and it was important for us to upgrade what we had to offer.

“We spent time working with Council to get these logs so that could offer new and exciting jumps to our members,” Julie said.

The new jumps have been set up by a professional course builder and some have even been carved to look like animals, with one bearing resemblance to a Dachshund.

Already the jumps have been tested with over 150 riders and their horses converging on the club on February 12 to take part in a cross-country horse-riding event.

Ms Lithgow said feedback around the new jumps was positive and that everyone at the club was grateful for support from the Council.

“We got really good feedback from our competition on Sunday which had 150 competitors.”

“It’s quite hard to get these size logs so when you do you really appreciate them.

Clubs like us, we don’t have the money to buy these logs because at the end of the day we are just a community organisation, so it’s just fantastic that we do have the volunteers to put the work in and carve these logs and place them where they need to be as well as what Council has done in donating them to us.”

Yarra Ranges Council has been working with community groups, Men’s Shed and artists to ensure a variety of logs are reused and repurposed around the municipality.

Yara Ranges Council Mayor, Cr Jim Child, said it was exciting to see the many uses that these logs have, and it was great to see that they are benefitting community groups who might otherwise have to fundraise for them or seek alternative materials.

“While the loss of trees from the Storm has been terrible it has been inspiring to see the community put a lot of these logs to good use and reuse/repurpose them in a meaningful way that will benefit the current pony club and future members.”

■ Yea Football Netball Club is mourning the passing of 1968 premiership team member Kevin McCrohan.

The former Highlands Primary School teacher suffered a stroke. He came to the Yea district fresh out of Coburg Teachers’ College.

Family friend Marylyn Christie said: “He was a very close friend to Richard Ivey and Peter McKenna (Collingwood Football Club).

“He was a member of the 1968 Yea Grand Final team and kicked six goals against the opposition team.”

Condolences are extended to the McCrohan family on their loss.

Fight to change the name of Yea ■ In an era where country town reports in daily newspapers appeared alphabetically, Yea often missed out being in print if the paragraphs about other towns were too lengthy.

In the 1910s, Major Frederick George Purcell, Editor of the Yea newspaper, campaigned to change the town name.

The original name for the district had been Muddy Creek.

A letter writer to The Argus in November, 1894, explained: “Sir,-In of today you give the origin of the name ‘Muddy Creek’ to the Yea River.

“Parhaps you will kindly accept a little information on the subject from an old subscriber.

“Hovell in his journey from Sydney to Port Phillip came to a creek at a point where crossing appeared impossible.

“It was not wide but running strong and deep, with steep banks on both sides. He rode down to its junction with the Goulburn, say, three miles “He rode upwards for some miles still the same steep banks and soft mud at the bottom.

“The only place he could see a little gravel was where the present bridge is at Yea. “He cut down the banks at each side, crossed and named the creek ‘the Muddy’, because of its mud.

“The gold discoveries in the neighbourhood are of a comparatively recent date.”

A letter writer to the Yea newspaper in 1912, calling themselves ‘Yeaite of the Sixties’ said: “I was pleased to see in last issue of the Chronicle, one at least coming forward in defence of the old time name of our township.

“1 am surprised at Major Purcell being not aware of our township's historical significance, more especilly as it was named after a brave and distinguished soldier.

“The major's ohjection to the name because of its position on alphabetical list making it as he says, more dillicult to get local news into the metropolitan papers, is it to use a

out, as it was intended to be by the proposed Trawool scheme.”

Another letter writer, going by the name of ‘Nay’, submitted: “Having followed the subject pretty closely since it was first mooted at the Progress Association meeting, and having read most of the arguments put forward as the reason why the name of the township should not be changed, I confess that I have not been impressed.

“We have been made acquainted with the reasons why the name of a celebrated soldier should be perpetuated.

“That is right enough even tbough he was one of the Bulldog breed that made old England’s fame.

“That does not describe our township. To think that one of the prettiest townships in the State should be named like a Quaker's affirmation.

“Besides we have the River Yea to perpetuate the memory; indeed it lends itself fairly well to rythm “By gentle Yea's meandering streams, In musing mood I often rove.

“That does not go badly, but the name applied to a township - and such a pretty township - seems out of place.

“Give it a nice sounding name,

some thing that will give the place a quality, indicate its situation, or its products.

“I am aware that this is not always done, still it need not prevent it being done now. “:The reasons already advanced for the change seems to me to be very strong, and to the point.”

Major Purcell did not have much to say in favour of the man after whom the town was named.

“I say that Col. Yea never did anything that entitled him to be immortalised. “ True nobility is derived from virtue, not from birth, and I will take a paragraph or two from his biography as published and I think the average reader will agree with me that Colonel Yea was not a noble character, and therefore has no particular claim to be immortalised: "This was largely due to Yea's personal exertions; his dark eyes yielded fire, and all the while from his deep chisselled merciless lips pealed the thunder of imprecation and command. He showed no mercy and cursed his men freely, while they were sacrificing their lives. Is there anything ennobling or elevating in such conduct. Sounds more like a tyrant than a noble character.”

Change names of Councillors not the town: reader

■ Sir-Having read a great deal in your paper of late re the changing the name of "Yea" I beg space to make a few suggestions. Since the name of Peter Snodgrass has been brought into the piece I might mention that when he first landed in Yea there was a large lagoon between the Post Office and the Bowling Green stretching from near the town pump in a circular fashion over to the side of Mr Buckland's shop.

On this a same lagoon were to be seen a few Blacks (Natives) paddling in canoes. 'What a lovely town it would be if that lake were still there and lighted up with the long expected Electric Light.

Well I am not going to suggest that the town be called after the first arrival, as we have a street called after him. This was practically his route through the spot where Yea now stands. Nor yet do I intend to suggest King Billy or Samba after any of the original blacks that paddled on this lake in the very early days although F. G. P. seems to admire some of the black's names, when naming some of the beauties around Yea. There are also some nice names and picturesque spots in this direction such as Kerrisdale, Strath Creek, Flowerdale, Glenfern and Break o' day But alas whatever the Progress Association thinks, the Council evidently thinks the King Parrot Road should keep its name and "place" independent of all these nice surrounding names But what I do intend to suggest is that you first change the names of some of the Councillors. I will not suggest which ones but there are some we must keep if we are to get Electric Light.

Well we must keep Cr Quinlan as it does not seem honourable to me to put him off. The Bible says honor thy Mother and Father etc and it is now he is the Father of the Council ... Keep a Drysdale because he is 'bonnie'.

Attempted murder as paper launches ■ Flowerdale, Strath Creek and King Parrot Creek were important areas to the Broadford Courier and Reedy Creek Times newspaper that was launched by J. M. Harcourt of Bendigo, with the first issue published on February 28, 1891.

The newspaper masthead boasted that it was circulating in ‘Wandong, Tallarook, Flowerdale, Strath Creek, Wallan, Kilmore East, King Parrot Creek, Pyalong, &c’.

A copy of the newspaper cost threepence. It had a Saturday publication schedule, and the premier editorial - ‘Our First Bow’ - said: “To the people of Broadford, Reedy Creek, Strath Creek,. Flowerdale, Tallarook, Wandong, Wallan Wallan, and the surrounding districts, we make a most profound bow.

“We come among you uninvited, and,. as we have been unanminously welcomed we come to stay:.

“Having said this much it goes without saying that the Broadford Courier is entirely untrumelled politically, socially, or financially: “Our only recognised, supporters are our subscribers and advertisers, who have already made this first issue a labour of love.”

The first issue had a ‘big news’ item, headlined ‘Shocking Tragedy:Suicide and Attempted Murder’.

“On Thursday, the 10th inst. at about 7 p.m., our usually quiet and peaceful little township was thrown into a state of great excitement, when it became known that a railway employee named Campbell had attempted to murder his wife, and then committed suicide, at a gatehouse about a mile from the town.

“Campbell fired two shots at his wife, with a live chamber'd revolver, one odging under the [temple] the other in the top of the head.

“He then placed the weapon to his head and took his own life, the bullet penetrating the [?].

“The deceased is one of a family of seven sons, most of whom are engaged on the railways.

“The following is a copy of a letter sent by the deceased to his brother previous to the murder :-- My dear, brother Aud- I am going to my wife, and if she does not come to see me she shall die by my hands, as I am nearly broken hearted and I will die too.

“Good-bye to all. God bless you all. God bless my little ones and take care of them for me. William goodbye; Ellen good-bye, Bobbie goodbye (his mother-in-law's children).

“Your dear father is broken hearted. God bless you. I am driven to it. A /C W Campbell. Goodbye.”

“The inquest on the body of the un fortunate man was held on Saturday morning last by Mr. Youl, coroner, and a jury of six.

“The following evidence was adduced: The first witness examined was Isabella Eaton, who said I am the wife of William Eaton, of Broadford, and sister-in-law of the deceased.

“De ceased was 29 years of age, and was a railway platelayer. He came to my place on Thursday morning the 19th inst. at 11 a.m. His wife was staying at my place with her four children.

“He went through the house to the back. I saw him speak to his wife, but did not hear what passed, beyond him asking her to go home, when she refused.

“I remember the Thursday evening of the 19th inst. in company with my mother, Mrs. Campbell and her children about a quarter to 7.

“I was coming across the railway line from Mr. Marchbanks' residence when I saw deceased standing near our water tank.

“I heard him ask mother if father was in. She said no I followed my mother into the house with two of the children.

“Mrs. Campbell was following. I heard a shot, and presently heard two more shots and then saw my sister on her hands and knees.

“I saw my mother picking her up.

The deceased was lying in the garden, and I saw a revolver lying on the ground be side him.

“I picked it up and then laid it down again. Constable Keane came, when I again picked it up and gave it to the constable.

“I recognise the revolver produced as the one used. I then sent or the doctor, who arrived shortly afterwards.

“Alfred Eaton, brother of the last witness, gave unimportant evidence.

“Dr. Skinner, then sworn, said: My name is George Henry Skinner.

I am a legal qualified medical practitioner.

“I was called on Thursday, at 7.30 p.m. the 19th inst., to come and see Campbell and his wife. When I arrived I found the deceased lying in the garden on the path.

“I turned him over on his back and noticed a bullet wound on his forehead, from which blood and brain matter was [?]. He was quite dead.

“On removing the scalp I found blood beneath the skin in large quantities. There was also a quantity in the skull pressing on the brain. I traced the bullet through the brain and found it lodged in the base of the skull.

“I examined the other organs internally and found then in a healthy condition. The cause of death in my opinion was from pressure on the brain by the bullet “Helen Healey deposed: I am the only sister of the deceased, and reside in Sandhurst. My husband is James Healy, of the same place. The signature of the letter produced I recog nise as that of the deceased. I only know that he was of a very vio-

“I took the eldest and then went for the baby, and locked them in a room. Mrs. Campbell was then on her hands and knees.

“Shortly afterwards I again heard two shots. He then went to the back gate, reloading the revolver.

“At that time he was about six yards from his wife. I then heard two more shots.

“Mrs. Campbell cried out to me "Come out he has shot himself." I went out and saw him lying on the ground. I saw blood flowing from one of his ears.

“I then lifted Mrs Campbell up and held her for about half-an-hour ● The Broadford Courier office. till Dr. Skinner arrived.

Paper ran until 1978

■ The first issue of the Broadford Courier was published on February 28, 1891.

On August 3, 1894, J. E. Fenton became editor of the newspaper, a role he held for 10 years.

In 1904 William McDonald bought the paper and property from the widow of founder J. M. Harcourt.

McDonald who was 12 when he started working in the printing office now became owner, editor and publisher.

The McDonald family's connection with the paper continued up until the late 1970s.

Eric McDonald took over the Courier in 1958 after having worked in the office for over 40 years.

In the early 70's Eric and his brother George were able to turn out between 300 and 400 copies a week at the 83-year-old printery.

It has been confirmed that in the 1970s, the was the only hand-set hand operated press in Victoria.

The issue for December 15, 1978, was the last, and it was then incorporated within the . lent temper and sometimes acted like ... insane. He was always saying he would be guided by me; but never acted on my advice. My advice being, to be upright nd just to his children.

“I was in the habit of corresponding with him, and recognise letter marked "'A" “Constable Daniel Keane, sworn, said: I am a constalble of Broadford. In conse quence of information received on Thursday, at 7 p.m., I went to the residence of W. Eaton.

“I there saw deceased lying in the garden on his left side, facing to the east. His wife nearly opposite and being separated by a few feet, facing west, on her left side.

“The doctor, and Mrs Eaton and her daughter, were at tending hiin. I requested the doctor to attend to the worst case first.

“He (the doctor) said Campbell was past attention. There was a large hole in the forehead the skin being blackened around wound and brain matter [and] a large quantity of blood [on the] ground.

“By direction of the doctor I placed Campbell upon his back. I found four empty cartridges about six yards from the body, and one whole one.

“He was then breathing very heavily, but never spoke. He was breathing for close upon five hours.

“I searched the body and found the two letters already produced; also found a large number of cartridges, some bills, photo of himself and wife and £3 9s 3d ,. silver watch and chain and railway carriage key and two handkerchiefs.

“There were no signs of a struggle where I found the body.

“The jury then gave their verdict as follows:-We agree that the said William Campbell did feloniously kill himself at Broadford.”

Breakaway bridge at Acheron ■ Bridges over the many rivers, creeks and streams running throughout Murrindindi Shire were vital for transporting travellers from one end of the shire to the other, says the Heritage Study completed in 2011 and 2014: Crossing the rivers began with barges and punts, and developed according to the available technology and finances often sought from the Colonial, later State Governments.

Alexandra and Yea, first designated Road Districts in 1868, progressed to Shire Council status in 1869 and 1873, respectively.

This change of status allowed the Shires to tender for, and construct, roads and bridges in their locality.

The Melbourne Road passing through Acheron and Taggerty dates from around 1870 when the area was surveyed.

A timber bridge over the Goulburn River at Acheron was built in c.1877 on land donated by Thomas Connelly.

Later, a single lane bridge was built. As the river widened, the bridge was extended and remodelled.

This bridge was swept away shortly after the First World War, c.1918, following several wet seasons.

Attempts were made to divert to original course of the river because of the many floods, caused by torrential rain in the headwaters.

The area became known as the Goulburn Breakaway.

Historian of the Taggerty Primary School, Peter Kerr, wrote that the remains of the timber bridge are still on the bed and banks of the river downstream of the existing bridge which was built to replace it.

The single-lane bridge, replacing the original, was built c.1920 by the Country Roads Board.

Handwritten notes on the reverse of photographs indicate that the bridge had five spans added on the south side c.1932 when the river shifted course approximately 150 feet.

The c1920 section of the bridge served for 12 years with only minor repairs.

Timber for the bridge came from the Dobson and Rennie families who lived nearby.

The term 'breakaway' describes the movement in the river, and the portion of the river that broke away during the floods of the early twentieth century.

The Breakaway Bridge crosses the Goulburn River where Hobans Road and Breakaway Road meet at the boundary between the localities of Acheron and Alexandra.

It is a timber pile and stringer bridge, with raker piles, cross braces and corbels.

Its structure is similar to that of the Country Roads Board's standard timber bridge introduced in the early 1920s.

A 1932 extension to the bridge after the 'Breakaway' was constructed in the same way.

It comprises the five spans on the south (Acheron) side. In all the bridge has nine spans and is 67.5 metres long (the individual spans measure 7.8, 8.3, 7.7, 7.3, 7.7, 8.7, 6.5, 6.6, and 6.9 metres).

It is a single-lane bridge with cross decking, timber kerbs and two strips of running boards.

In 2013, the Council repaired and refurbished the bridge over the Goulburn River.

The bridge was closed for some months so that strengthening and refurbishment could take place.

The handrail was made of timber wood again, as it was originally. Heavier loads - the fire truck, ambulances, school buses, were allowed.

Early days of racing at Alex.

■ Early mentions of horse racing at Alexandra came within weeks of the first issue of the Times local newspaper.

“There was a goodly attendance on the race-course last Thursday, and seldom have I witnessed a more orderly and enthusiastic crowd than that which assembled on the hill, not at Flemington, but at Alexandra,” wrote the Times correspondent on August 18, 1868.

“The town was decked out with a grand display of bunting in honor of the occasion and every thing looked gay.

“Although the "old hoss" did not win, he showed such an amount of gameness and good staying qualities that I noted him as first favorite when next he enters the lists.

“My "dark 'un" did not make the show I expected, the pace being evidently too severe, yet he persevered to the end.

“I had a look at the stable in the evening and found the old one and the dark gentleman looking as fresh as daisies, but did not fancy the appearance of most of the others who seemed thoroughly jaded by this their first gallop and defeat.

“I wonder how all the free lunches which were provided on Thursday last were disposed of. “North, south, east, or west, turn how one would, the startling announcement that a free lunch was provided stared you in the face.

“I have no doubt the greater part of the solids disappeared somehow, and the worthy bonifaces of the town had nothing to complain about in the shape of the sale of liquids, for to judge from the number of thirsty souls who crowded the several bars a golden harvest was being reaped.

“In the evening there were free balls and suppers at several of the hotels, and the sounds of music and of mirth could be heard up to a late hour.

“All seemed upon enjoyment bent, and the utmost good humor prevailed throughout the entire festivities.” ★ On the mining fields of Godfrey’s Creek, foot races were organised alongside horse races on New Year’s Day 1869.

A number of girls' and boys' races, throwing the stone, &c. afterwards took place, which closed a day's good sport, the first ever held on Godfrey's. ★ Origins of a race club at Alexandra are alluded to in a Times press report on December 3, 1869: “The Alexandra Race Commitee have set to work in an energetic manner.

“The course is now cleared and marked out. Subscriptions are fast coming in, so that everything indicates the first meeting on the new

The 1870 officials were J. Peterkin (judge), with stewards comprising W.V. Smith, A.H. Emerson, John Whitelaw, A. Motherwell, F. Coster, G. Whiting, J. Blain, J. Cronin and John Branch. By. Perkins was starter, A. Armstrong was listed as Clerk of the Course, C. Harker was elected as Treasurer, and T.A. Bourke filled the role as Hon. Secretary. ★ At Godfrey’s Creek, a two-day meeting was advertised for December 27-28, 1869.

The Godfrey’s Creek Jockey Club notified that its stewards were R.W. Blythman J.P., J.J. Downing, R. Gruby, E. Namsberg, W.K. Boulter, R.Anquetell, T.N. Jewell and J. McMahon.

Other officials included J. O’Callaghan, J. Coyne (Clerk of the Course), Samuel Fenton (Treasurer and Secretary), and A. Bunney (Weigher).

The first day of racing included a Maiden Plate, Miners’Purse, Town Plate, Ladies’ Pulse and ‘Hurry Scurry’.

The second day events were the Licensed Victuallers’ Purse, Hurdle Race, Storekeepers’ Plate and Consolation Stakes.

“A penalty of £1 will be entered against any jockey riding in colours other than those entered ... all jockeys to ride in proper costimes.” ★ The Alexandra Races were advertised for Thursday-Friday, March 1718, 1870 (insteadof February 24-25).

The second day promised the Alexandra Handicap with a £30 prize for the race over two miles.

Nominations needed to reach Secretary Calvert Harker by March 1. Acceptances needed to be accompanied by 40 shillings.

The Times (March 18, 1870) reported on the race meeting: “Yesterday may indeed be accounted a rod letter day.in the annals of Alexandra, and when the time comes that the attendance at our race meetings may be counted by thousands instead of hundreds, which may not be so very far off, despite the melancholic croakings of a

“Upon arriving on the course, we found three substantial booths erected. The first of these, which included the grand stand, was under the able management of Messrs Irvine and Levy, the second belonged to Mr J. Kirwan, of the Shamrock Hotel, and the third to Messrs P. O'Donnell and P. Buggy.

“Having refreshed the inner man, we proceeded to take a cursory view of things in general, and were much gratified to see such a ga:thering of youth and beauty, the "fair daughters of Victoria" being present in great numbers.

“The usual ''under and over" and roulette tables were in full swing, despite the terrors of the law, and again exemplified the truth of the old adage, "A fool a d his money," &c.

“The greatest order and good humour prevailed throughout, and all appeared to enter into the day's sport with great zest.

“An accident happened during the afternoon by which two persons were injured.

“It appears that a young lady, whose name we have not learnt, was riding: round the course, when she came into violent collision with two horsemen who were coming from the osrte dircotion.

“She was thrown heavily to the ground, one of the horsemen sharing a similar fate.

“We understand that the young lady has received a slight injury to her hip, and that the unfortunate man had his leg broken in two places.

“The first' race of the day was the Maiden Plate, for which there were seven colored on the card, the whole of which weighed out.

“Protests were also entered against the second and third horses, through which Killingworth was also disqualified, the j ockey having dismounted before being ordered to do so.

“The protest against Murrundindi, which was a.similar one to that against Flirt, will be decided this evening:.

“The next eventof the day was the Publicans' Purse, £15, Two Miles, weight for age.

“Velocipede 'gradually' drawing ahead, the rider of Poison evidently waiting on him.

“From.this time the race was never in doubt, the mare gradually increasing her lead, and coming home a winner several lengths ahead of Velocipede, who ran a game horse throughout.

“The Ladies' Purse having fallen through in consequence of there not being sufficient. entries, a Visitors' Handicap was got up in lieu thereof.

“The following horses started for this event : Visitors' Handicap, £15, Tivo Miles.

A fine run home onsued between the pair, Moscow at last winning by a couple of lengths, “This brought the first day's racing to a close, the remaining event on, the card - a hack race - being postponed on account of the lateness of the hour.”

Events Commonwealth Games in 2026?

■ Commonwealth Games Australia has signed a Heads of Agreement with the Victorian Government and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to enter exclusive negotiations to bring the 2026 Commonwealth Games to Victoria with a vision to deliver a model for the Games unprecedented in the event’s history.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula, confirmed that, if awarded, the 2026 Commonwealth Games would return to Victoria.

Victoria will work to deliver a world-class Commonwealth Games across Victoria that leaves a legacy for the State and it is proposed that the 2026 Games would be hosted across the State, unlike the event in Melbourne in 2006.

The Government will now work with both the CGF and CGA to develop Victoria’s 2026 Commonwealth Games Submission – which will assess the viability of hosting the event.

The submission will focus on a new way to host the Games, showing how events could be held in multiple locations across regional Victoria to showcase the best of what the State has to offer and ensure a uniquely Victorian experience for the athletes and spectators.

A regionally focused Commonwealth Games would expand the capacity of Victorian regional cities for major events, tourism, arts, culture and sport. Not only would the events mean new economic opportunities through event infrastructure – it would deliver the double benefit of creating local jobs and housing. The Games would also drive participation in sports at both a community and professional level, throughout the State.

A major cultural festival would accompany the 2026 Commonwealth Games that celebrates the diversity of competing nations.

The CGF will assess this submission prior to any decision being made to award the Games to Victoria.

The 2026 Games will be the 23rd edition of the major multi-sport competition, which first began in Hamilton, Canada in 1930.

The CGF have been in discussions with multiple countries across the Commonwealth regarding hosting the 2026 Games, with negotiations accelerating following the launch of the 2026/30 Strategic Roadmap in October 2021. The Roadmap provides future hosts and sports with the renewed flexibility to be innovative and creative in delivering the Games.

Commonwealth Games Australia have been seeking a host for 2026 and have been working with the CGF to bring the Commonwealth Games back to Australia.

Australia has staged the Commonwealth Games on five occasions, with Victoria playing host to the Melbourne 2006 Games; widely considered one of the most successful editions of the event in history.

Australia has also staged the Games in Sydney in 1938, Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982 and most recently Gold Coast in 2018.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be staged in Birmingham, England from July 28– August 8.

Commonwealth Games Australia President Ben Houston said: “Hosting Great Games is a key pillar in the Commonwealth Games Australia strategic plan and given our window for hosting the Games is 2026 we are thrilled to join the CGF in exclusive dialogue with Victoria to host the Commonwealth Games once again.

What’s On Chancers

■ Given the effort and detail that has gone into this production of Robert Massey’s, Chancers, and given the reputation of the Brighton Theatre Company, one would have expected a larger audience.

Indeed, the small auditorium is usually abuzz creating an energy and excitement one would normally associate with live theatre – but in these Covid times, there has been audience hesitation which has played out in amateur forums.

Set in a failing corner store after Ireland’s financial collapse, Aiden Farrell (Mark Briggs) and his wife, Dee (Sass Pinci), struggle to make ends meet.

The potential to fleece pensioner, Gertie Graham (Carol Shelbourn), of her lottery prize with the help of an inept friend, J P Kennedy (Jordan Iverach), culminates in an absurd comic reflection of the plight of countless ordinary people battling impersonal global markets beyond their control and understanding.

Massey’s skill is in balancing the comic and pathetic while discussing the ethical and moral conundrum of actual physical violence and theft for the sake of one’s legitimate survival.

Briggs, Pinci and Iverach revel in the discourse being the mainstays of the discussion with Shelbourn’s crotchety dowager making an intriguing target.

Whilst the interactions are tight, the final lyric element of each one’s Irish accent is not quite consistent.

Voice and dialect coach Maria Haughey would have had her work cut out for her here.

There is something about the timing of an accent that a native like Massey has layered in for comic effect that is problematic for alien tongues.

That comic acknowledgement is also in Peter Newling’s direction which recognizes the interplay of the ‘traditional Irish warmth, humour and self deprecation’.

The furnishings of a corner store (John Shelbourne) are given added and authentic detail by the props (Deborah Fabbro) – the crisps and breakfast cereals are genuine.

This play deserves the full houses one normally associates with Brighton Theatre Company.

The added nuances of dialect will consolidate over the run of the season and would even be assisted by the energetic engagement of a full house. And the absurdity behind Massey’s message is still as relevant today as when this play was written in 2013.

■ Celebrating its 70th anniversary this August, the Melbourne International Film Festival is releasing Melbourne on Film – a collection of bold new writing capturing the city’s on-screen identity – which will be published August 2.

Cracked Actors

■ The synopsis provided in the programme perhaps alerts us to the underlying problems in this production of Lenore – a tale of mournful and never-ending remembrance.

It is ‘inspired by ... Poe’ ..tracing a man’s madness...’ even though it is about a ‘strong-willed woman’.

In other words, it tries to do too much and we are never sure of the actual focus.

The gothic horror of Poe does emerge towards the latter end of the first act though Poe (Aiden McHarg) doesn’t play a significant part in the actual plot.

Beaumont (Sebastiano Pitruzzello) is the painter that goes mad emulating the narrator from The Raven thus, is not the inspiration for the poem.

Lenore (Bridget Morrison), having married Beaumont, looks for an escape in a Juliet-like ruse having been given a potion by Sidney (Vincent Pidal), a doctor who has already proposed to her.

This would have been an adequate end point but the writers (Steven Boltz and Amy Hollow) have Lenore returning to Beaumont and being murdered only to revive once more in a final scene where we learn it is all only a tale. By this stage, things have become just a little too melodramatic.

There are also production difficulties.

Live theatre requires actors to project their voices even when playing mournful and subdued scenes. More than once I felt like calling out ‘speak up’.

Boltz’s direction didn’t aid the situation as there were occasions when actors performed with their backs to the audience and masked other performers. These are rudimentary concerns that should have been addressed.

The plain white set (Neil McLellan) had potential with a few angular apertures, but judicious lighting (Jason Junjie) could have enhanced this even further and there was an opportunity for more shadow to heighten the gothic.

All in all, the play would benefit from some serious editing and the actors needed to work on their stage craft and voice projection a little more.

Even the audience in the back row deserve to hear the dialogue.

Phantasmagoria

■ Theatreworks presents Phantasmagoria by Bernadette Trench-Thiedeman from March 2 12 at 14 Acland Street, St Kilda.

Written and created by Bernadette TrenchThiedeman and directed by Cathy Hunt, Phantasmagoria is a new play exploring the troubled relationship between a woman and her violent father long after he has passed away.

Briony is just your regular girl from the outer suburbs, finding love, trying to make a new life and hopefully a home. But to lay foundations for a new home you have to dig into the ground. You might disturb what had been laid to rest.

Briony is in the process of unearthing her father’s childhood in Sri Lanka, his brutal World War II history in Burma, migration journey, alcoholism, and his family's eventual escape from him.

Using magic realism, incorporating puppetry and animation, this new work plunges beneath an everyday domestic space to reveal family secrets, visits from departed spirits and complex emotional worlds.

The cast includes Meg Dunn (Grace Under Pressure), puppeteer Elnaz Sheshgelani (Iranian Bauhaus), Bernadette Trench Thiedeman (Big Country Puppets, The Divination Agency) and Yuchen Wang (Golden Shield, Nightingale and the Rose) and has been developed with dramaturg Emilie Collyer.

Travelling back and forth through time and space, Phantasmagoria is full of grief, love, loss, absurdity and a generous serving of stage magic.

Performance, comedy, puppetry and animated imagery give physical life to the realm of ghosts, letting audiences glimpse unseen worlds and uneasy memories which persist - can we ever truly shake them?

You Could Have Had It All

■ Cassidy La Crème returns to Melbourne to present her cabaret You Could've Had It All: The Adele Group Therapy Sing-A-Long from March 7 - 12 at The Butterfly Club.

Pre-pandemic, Cassidy was at the peak of her career abroad in Malaysia, working as a recording artist, actress and TV personality in the Malay-speaking community across the globe.

Cassidy returned home to be with her family before the borders closed in 2020 and says "Being a ‘supremely single’ 34-year-old woman living at home with her parents wasn’t exactly planned.."

It was Adele’s songs that got Cassidy through the tough times. Having developed a deep bond with Adele’s music over the course of her 20s, it was over wines with friends that she realised she was not alone.

One friend recently revealed that when she first moved to Melbourne with a friend, they both went through nasty breakups and would meet up to drive around the streets of Melbourne together with the radio blaring and it was belting out the songs of Adele that got them through it.

Yea, Alex. at odds over railway opening ■ Achieving the rail extension to Alexandra was no easy task for local people at the turn of the 20th Century.

The Broadford Courier summed it up, in December 1899: “Again the 4 mile connection by rail of Alexandra road to Alexandra has been put off.

“This line has now been before members (of Parliament) and the public for many years and the pity is that something decisive has not been achieved.

“There is splendid country beyond Alexandra as well as town traffic, which is considerable.

“The people of an important district like Alexandra should insist upon better treatment being meted out to them.

“We are confident many members of the House would by voice and vote urge the extension.

“The non construction is a drawback to the district, and it seems that a continual fight must be kept up to achieve the end in view.”

It was 1909 before the first Alexandra passenger railway train made its journey.

The Yea newspaper reported: “The railway into Alexandra was officially opened ou Thursday, October 23th.

“Some members of our local shire council were desirous of being present at the opening as members of a neighbouring council: but in the absence of invitations, they did not care to put in an appearance.

“Some of our councillors expressed themselves very freely about the lack of courtesy shown to the Yea Shire council as a body by the Alexandra council, and in our issue of the 28th ult., we briefly referred to the matter.

“The Alexandra Standard endeav-ours to explain the circumstances, as the following paragraph will show : “The fighting editor of an adjoining contemporary complains that because a general invitation to the opening of the railing wsas not extended to the councillors of his shire the municipality was shabbily treated.

■ “On the occasion of a visit to Alexandra last week, the Premier was urged to construct the long-talked-of railway extension from Alexandra-road to Alexandra, a distance of only about four miles,” reported The Australasian in 1907.

“It was represented that a heavy revenue would be derived from the opening up of the Rubicon state forest and the development of the timber industry.

“Mr. Bradford, the electrical expert of the Brighton-St. Kilda tramway, has reported that there is sufficient water power going to waste in two falls in the forest to drive mills and work the extended line by electrical power.

“Last year the Railways Standing Committee recommended that an extension of four miles 28 chains should be undertaken at a cost of £27,000, conditionally on the land required being handed over to the Government and a guarantee against loss being forthcoming from the shire council.

“Mr. Bent stated that on the eve of an election he could say nothing, but the residents knew his opinion, and it nad not changed.

“In reference to the building of a tramway line into the forest, he remarked that he had obtained a sum of money from Parliament for the purpose of making railways into forests.

“He made inquiries which he thought would be satisfactory to the advocates of the claims of Rubicon state forest.”

Hosted by President of Box Hill RSL, John Haward, who told stories of Box Hill RSL and being a guiding light for veterans and their families for over 100 years.

Attending were the birthday boys Gavin Wood, Head of Countdown Motion Pictures; Alan Johnson, Head of the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites, Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood; and international film and television director, Rod Hardy.

One of the guests flew in from Los Angeles the day before to attend. Barry Wilson, cinematographer on Crawford Productions and then in the States on The Dukes of Hazzard, Melrose Place and many others.

Love scammers

■ In the first three quarters of 2021, Americans lost $343M+ to romance scams, per an analysis by Atlas. That’s more than all of 2020, in which Americans reported $304M in romance scams to the FTC, up 50 per cent from 2019.

What’s a romance scam? According to the FBI, it’s when a scammer uses a bogus online persona to build a relationship with someone they later con out of money.

Romance scammers typically lurk on dating sites or social media to find victims, and may be part of a criminal organization. Common targets are lonely or vulnerable people over 50, often women.

Scammers establish trust and affection, then ask for money perhaps for medical or legal fees, debt, or travel expenses. And they usually want it via some less traceable means, like gift or reload cards, transfers, or crypto.

Why the boom in romance scams? One theory: the pandemic. People have a good excuse for not wanting to meet in person and have been more isolated than ever. A recent study found 36 per cent of Americans are feeling “serious loneliness.”

■ The FBI has arrested a young man who sprayed cops with pepper spray, smashed out a window and broke into the US Capitol before he went to basic training for the U.S. Air Force.

Aiden Bilyard was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, according to court records.

He faces a host of charges, including felony civil disorder, assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon, destruction of government property, entering and remaining in a restricted building with a deadly or dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct with a deadly or dangerous weapon, and several other misdemeanours.

US Federal Debt facts

■ As Congress worked in recent days to increase the legal limit on the federal debt, the Treasury kept that debt artificially frozen at approximately $28.9 trillion.

With that limit lifted, the federal debt will take a jump upward, then keep steadily climbing, constantly increasing the burden on future taxpayers.

In 2018, according to the last complete annual report on individual income tax returns published by the Internal Revenue Service, there were 100,424,240 households in the United States that filed what the IRS calls a "taxable return."

"The taxable and non-taxable classification of a return for this report is determined by the presence of 'total income tax,'" explained the IRS. "'Total income tax,'" it said, "was the sum of income tax after credits."

In other words, the 100,424,240 households that filed a "taxable return" in 2018 actually paid income taxes to the federal government.

If you divide the $28,908,004,857,445 in debt that the federal government owed before the debt limit was lifted by the 100,424,240American households that paid net income taxes in 2018, it works out to approximately $287,859 per incometax-paying household.

Back in 1989, the year that President Ronald Reagan left office, there were 89,178,355 income-tax-paying households in the United States, according to the IRS. At the end of January that year, the federal debt was $2,697,957,000,000.

Cannabis taxes

■ In 2020, US cannabis sales hit a record $17.5B, per Forbes.

But a new report from the Marijuana Policy Project found that states are also profiting.

The 18 states that have legalised recreational cannabis have raked in $10.4B in tax revenue since 2014.

The report does not include local tax revenues…but cities pull in money, too. Denver has generated $237.5M. California’s West Hollywood sees itself as a future Amsterdam.

It currently has six dispensaries in 1.8 square miles, generating $2.2M a year.

Where does the money go? Every state is different, but many support schools, infrastructure, or non-profits.

For example, Colorado splits its money among funds including the Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Fund.

Since 2014, it has received $325M+ in excise taxes. California has given ~$100M to organisations that work with communities harmed by the war on drugs, per AP News.

Michigan generated $45.7M in 2020 from excise taxes and fees, which it splits between its School Aid Fund, the Michigan Transportation Fund, municipalities and counties, and admin costs.

A 2021 study from the Pew Research Centre found that only 8 per cent of US adults think cannabis should be illegal, while 31 per cent are cool with medical use and 60% are fine with recreational use, too.

Stars: *** Review: On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station-but when the hit-man turns up at the precinct, an unsuspecting rookie cop finds herself caught in the crosshairs.

Uncomplicated, well staged '70s inspired action thriller is as unoriginal as it gets, but it's plainly obvious that co-writer and director Joe Carnahan and coproducer and star Gerard Butler knew that from the outset, and as a result have delivered a pulpy thrill-ride that owes much to, or draws upon, the western genre, with such classics as Howard Hawks' 1959 classic "Rio Bravo" and most notably its subsequent 1976 reimagining "Assault on Precinct 13" by John Carpenter, along with a touch of Quentin Tarantino to spice up the mix.

There's nothing new here, but it's nonetheless, a big, dumb, fun, loud, lean, mean, old fashioned 'take no prisoners' shoot 'em up with Gerard Butler doing what he does best as the hit-man, along with a stand-out supporting cast, most notably Frank Grillo as the con-artist and Alexis Louder as the heroine rookie cop who gets caught up in the mayhem, and even though it won't garner any Oscar nominations, it knows exactly what it is and exactly where it is going, an effectively entertaining pot-boiler with its tongue firmly in its check and a thrill-ride filled with baddies, gunplay and pyrotechnics that many will be glad they went along for the ride!

Stars: **½ Review: When the aging crime boss Meyer Lansky is investigated one last time by the FBI, who suspect he has stashed away millions of dollars over half a century, the retired gangster reveals to a writer the untold story about his life as the notorious boss of the National Crime Syndicate and his associations with such gangland figures as Charles "Lucky" Luciano, Al Capone, Albert Anastasia and childhood friend Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, to name a few.

Pedestrian but nonetheless a good, solid and compelling enough biopic on the legendary crime boss is brought all the more vividly to life thanks to the presence and performance of veteran actor Harvey Keitel, and even thoughcliché dominates, budget restraints are obvious and length over running the mark.

This is a monumental step up and far cry from numerous other recent gangster biopics, most notably the 2018s diabolically cringe inducing mess "Gotti" with John Travolta and 2020s grotesquely demented and heavyhanded "Capone" with Tom Hardy, this remains a fascinating and engaging watch despite the flaws and no matter what expectations you may have in place beforehand.

Rourke’s Reviews The Batman

■ (M). 175 minutes. Opens in cinemas, including IMAX, March 3.

Wanting to dig deeper and darker than other adaptations of the DC comic creation, this admittedly intriguing production is hamstrung by a shallow script, ridiculous overlength, and a deliberate restraint so that as many young teens can buy tickets for it as possible.

Robert Pattinson plays Batman/ Bruce Wayne, and the night time crime fighting is having a serious effect on both his mental health and views on human nature, a situation that is worrying his butler, Alfred (Andy Serkis).

Gotham City is thrown into chaos when a mysterious psycho called The Riddler (Paul Dano) starts murdering notable politicians and law enforcers, who seem connected to a dark secret, a secret that may involve Wayne’s long dead parents.

Also complicating matters are Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), The Penguin (an unrecognisable Colin Farrell), and his mobster boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).

Co-writer/director Matt Reeves, who scored strongly the recent Planet Of The Apes sequels, wants to take Batman in a decidedly more adult direction, with a psychological dissection of Wayne and his nemesis, exploring how similar they are in many ways; damaged people who no longer trust the system and the people who run it, leading to a distortion of justice, causing violence that will eventually hurt the innocent.

But Reeves and his producers make the huge mistake of wanting to do it within an audience friendly, PG-13 (the movie is rated M here) framework, robbing the material’s potential of truly walking down and confronting the most harrowing, disturbing aspects of modern society.

This film really needed to be rated either MA or R. As such, the script never digs very deep, and for a movie that runs almost three hours, that leaves quite a huge hole, one that is never satisfyingly filled.

Pattinson is okay, but all he really has to do is look glum, while Kravitz cannot rise above a badly written role, complete with risible dialogue, and the moments of sexual tension between her and Pattinson is extremely clumsy.

Everyone else does what’s asked of them, but their characters are sketchy at best. There is unnecessary narration, and dialogue too often solely exists to spoon feed the audience.

Though slick, The Batman is so obsessed with surface level grimness, that it forgets to examine the gritty, unsettling details underneath, resulting in an incredibly frustrat-

ing viewing experience. Imagine if David Fincher made Seven, and Sidney Lumet made Prince Of The City, as PG-13 movies, and you’ll have a fair idea of what to expect here.

Cyrano

■ (PG). 124 minutes. Now showing in cinemas.

A heavy-handed adaptation of the oft-filmed Edmond Rostand play, this latest iteration might end up feeling redundant, but what does make it worth watching are two terrific central performances.

The plot basically remains the same; Cyrano (Peter Dinklage), a passionately proud poet and swordsman, secretly yearns for the fiery Roxane (Haley Bennett), whom he has known for years.

Unaware of Cyrano’s feelings, Roxane falls for the young, handsome Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr), and discovering he is to be a new recruit at the garrison Cyrano is part of, persuades her longtime friend to ask Christian to woo her via letter.

Reluctantly agreeing to help, Cyrano finds out that Christian is hopeless with the written and spoken word, so decides to write for him, causing many complications between everyone involved.

Erica Schmidt’s screenplay (adapted from her own musical play, which also starred husband Dinklage) comes across like that of a Disney animated film, where messages are laid on thick, and lessons must be learned, and director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pan, Darkest Hour) makes sure every point is hammered home ad nauseam.

This, added with a series of forgettable, jarringly inserted songs (one number practically turns into a Bonnie Tyler music video), makes the two hour running time seem longer.

Harrison Jr. is under-utilised (compared to his outstanding turns in Waves and Luce), while the supporting cast aren’t given much of a chance to register (Ben Mendelsohn is particularly wasted).

Despite these flaws, both Dinklage (The Station Agent) and Bennett (The Devil All The Time, Swallow) are excellent, bringing life to their respective characters, and their work is worth the price of admission.

Pales in comparison to the 1990 version starring Gerard Depardieu, and as a different presentation of the story, it doesn’t come together as well as Steve Martin’s underrated 1987 variation, Roxanne.

■ Myke Dyer was a radio announcer and television producer who worked in Melbourne and is probably well remembered by our readers.

Michael David Dyer was born on October 2, 1932 in London. He was the son of Carleton Leroy Dyer and his wife Dorothy who were both from Canada.

In 1940 Michael accompanied his mother, sister and brother to Ontario where he attended Lakefield Naval Boarding College and Oakville High School. During that time he developed a strong Canadian accent.

Myke studied radio and television in Toronto during the early 1950s. He worked in various jobs before coming to Australia in 1954 on his father's advice.

Myke came to Melbourne and was employed by radio station 3DB. He produced the variety show The Happy Gang and worked with people such as Bill Collins, Dick Cranbourne and Shirlene Clancy.

On January 7, 1956, at the Memorial Church in East Malvern, Myke married Judith Tilton.

They had two children during their marriage, Jo Anne and Peter.

Myke had a keen interest in jazz music and began broadcasting a popular late night radio show on 3DB which was titled Sound Study.

In later years he also did the show on 3XY and 3AK. Thanks to Mike McColl Jones I was given reel to reel tapes of many of these shows.

is amazing how many famous jazz stars were interviewed by Myke for his program. He managed to interview Bob Crosby, Mel Torme, Dave Brubeck, Jerri Adams, George Shearing and Earl Grant.

Myke joined GTV Channel 9 and worked in television. He produced the Logie award-winning show, It Could Be You, hosted by Tommy Hanlon Jnr. Myke also did a radio show with Tommy Hanlon Jnr on 3AK titled The Tom and Myke Show.

He compered jazz concerts and lectured on the history of jazz at such diverse establishments as the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Pentridge Prison.

On January 7, 1978, just two days before he was due to take up a new appointment with Armstrong Audio Video Pty Ltd, Myke went swimming in the surf at Mullaway Beach, New South Wales.

He was tragically swept out to sea by a strong rip and drowned at the age of 46. It was a huge shock to his family, friends and fans.

In later years his son Peter continued in his father's footsteps and was a presenter on the ABC radio program, .

Judy Dyer attended the radio Survivors luncheon in 2016 but sadly passed away earlier the following year She was Graham Kennedy's first private secretary and was also a talented ceramic jewellery designer.

She designed cuff-links for all members of the ‘Merkin Club’ which was a regular luncheon club each Friday at James Smythe's Toorak Hotel.

Mike Walsh was President, Mike McColl Jones was the secretary and members included Jim Murphy, Gordon French, James Smythe, Bill Beams, Bob Cribb, John Mc Lachlan and many other television people.

Gondoliers

■ On Thursday February 10 I saw the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria back in the now refubished Alexandra Theatre at Monash University.

The opening is set in Venice .

GSOV had a backdrop of Venice with a wharf for the gondolas The opening number Chorus of Contadine was performed by the chorus and solos.

One outstanding performer in the chorus was Marisa Panzarin as Flametta.

Enter from Spain the ducal party, the Duke and Duchess of Plaza toro, their daughter Casilda and Luiz, the Duke’s personal drummer.

Ron Pidcock gave an excellent performance as the Duke of Plaza Toro.

A fine voice and a good interpretation of such a role. Pidcock was entertaining as the character.

His wife, the Duchess, was played

by Lynlee Williams. Williams played ie role formidably as called for adding to her good interpretation of the role she balanced her performance with her great voice.

Another terrific performance was given by Ian Lowe as DonAlhambra del Bolero, The Grand Inquisitor.

Lowe captured the characteristics of the role giving a masterful performance, a penetrating voice and acting range from a pleasant man to a touch of lechery when acquainted with a young lady.

The two heroes of the story were the gondoliers, Marco Palmieri performed by Stephen Carolane and Giuseppe Palmieri, played by Daniel Felton.

Both carried themselves well, giving great interpretations of their roles and were good balances to their respective wives.

The Ring Cycle includes four epic operas totalling 17 hours of performance time and is known to be the greatest challenge for any opera company as the most impressive and opulent event in the history of the artform.

by Laura Slavin and Tessa played by Emilie Washington.

Both ladies gave terrific performances, showing their love for their husbands and the expressions when they heard the news from The Grand Inquisitor was a picture. Good performances by both young ladies enhanced by their singing.

The daughter of the Duke of Plaza toro, Casilda, was performed by Isabelle Mazzarella.

Another good performance both as a singer and actor. Her scenes with the Duke’s drummer Luiz were delightful and enhanced by a wonderful voice.

Luiz was played by Andrew Alesi another good performance but in a love song he rather neglected t look at his beloved which did not suit the occasion.

The setting of Venice and Barataria was well cone and the director/choreographer Robert Ray is to be congratulated on the movement on stage and the overall production. It is nice to see GSOV back on stage.

Ring Cycle

■ Melbourne Opera took Wagner’s Ring Cycle to Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre with Die Walküre on February 27, when the full staging of the historic Ring Cycle wasofficially launched to the Bendigo region.

■ AffordableArt Fair Melbourne organisers have announced the decision to postpone the event until spring to ensure all galleries, staff, and art lovers can safely attend.

The new dates are September 1-4 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Organisers xtend their apologies for any inconvenience this may cause upcoming content schedules.

All ticket holders have been contacted with the option to roll over their tickets to the spring event or request a refund.

The AffordableArt Fair Sydney is still scheduled to debut as planned, June 2-5 at Royal Randwick, with a line up of local galleries set to be announced soon.

Same team, new station

■ The iconic AFL footy comics, The Coodabeens, have quit their gig on ABC radio and relocated, as of Friday March 11 to 1377AM and Ace Radio country network. Great way to start the weekend with all the fun and originality of the gang. The show starts 4pm-6pm.

Seven loses defamation case

■ We all know how the kidnapping of little Cleo Smith played out and ended happily thereafter. Not so happy for Channel 7 who in their rush to get the news to air called the accused kidnapper by the wrong name and he, took Seven to court and won. The amount of settlement is to be kept confidential.

Big brass for Bucks

■ A rumour doing the rounds is Nathan Buckley trousered a reported $300,000 for his time in the jungle as a contestant on Ten's I'mA Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Other contestants got nowhere near this figure, we'll never know why Bucks got so much brass.

New Chief Conductor

12-race program at Mildura

■ Mildura which in recent times has been so popular with trainers from all over the state and South Australia raced on Tuesday with another mammoth 12 race program.

■ Charlton duo Mark Boyle (part-owner/ trainer) and Ryan Sanderson (driver) landed The Gateway Pace over 2190 metres with 4Y0 Tell All-Slap On A Hat entire Yapper which is also part-owned by Mark’s wife Janice.

Not pushed out from gate four Yapper lobbed one/one as Ferocious Son (gate two) led. When the speed slackened, Yapper was off and running prior to the bell to assume control and after kicking away in the last lap with a handy margin, scored by 1.9 metres from local hope Magic In Her Moves (one/four) – four wide last lap and Be A Good Scout which followed the runner up home finishing 5.1 metres away third. The mile rate 2-00.3.

■ South Australian’sWayne Hill and sister Dani were both winners during the evening with Wayne taking the $10,000 Tenderprint Australia Pace Final over 1790 metres aboard the Frank Mercieca trained Thomas Heights, a 6Y0 gelded son of A Rocknroll Dance and The Golden Bird and ten year old Jeremes Jet-Westburn Rubina gelding James Charles in the 1790 metre Club Aquarius Pace, while Dani was victorious aboard Jill Neilson’s Penfield (S-A) trained 5Y0 Courage Under Fire-Café Au Lait gelding Just Cappy in the McDonalds Mildura & Irymple Pace over 2190 metres.

Thomas Heights flew away from outside the front line to lead easily and was never headed, reaching the wire by 11 metres from Fiftyshades Cresco (gate two) which trailed, with Have A Crack 3.5 metres away third after following the pair.

The mile rate 1-58.6. James Charles trained locally by Scott Garroway after trailing the poleline leader Elizabeth Era from gate three registered a neck margin over the pacemaker, with Crackerjacks Judge third 3.4 metres back after trailing the pair. The rate 2-01.8. Just Cappy repeated the dose by leading all the way from gate three to score from Toby Ogara which trailed from the pole in 1-59.3. Captain Confetti (one/ one) was third 7.3 metres back off a one/one trip.

Don’t Need An Excuse led throughout from gate three to account for Morningstar Gold off a three wide trail by 1.6 metres in a rate of 1-57.1 with Neds Beach (three back the markers) third 10.9 metres back, while Jawsoflincoln showed no speed from the pole to settle in a tight pocket three back the markers as Alistair Lavros led from gate two. Shifting away from the inside in the last lap to make the final bend three wide, Jawsoflincoln gained a last stride head decision over the pacemaker, with Yoursnmine third 4.3 metres away after trailing the leader. The mile rate 1-59.6.

Lovely trip

■ At Melton, it was great to see Oakleigh South based owner/trainer William Kucks in the winners stall when 5Y0 Angus Hall-Susuwe mare Whos Me Mum scored in the TAB Long May We Play Trotters Mobile over 1720 metres.

Given a lovely trip from the pole by Herbie H three back the markers after favourite Dellsun (gate five) took the lead away from Well Deserved, Whos Me Mum angled away from the inside approaching the final bend to lead on turning and held a margin of 1.5 metres to account for Uncle Al along the sprint lane from near last.

Well Deserved held at 10 years of age held his ground for third 1.4 metes away. The mile rate 2-01.6.

■ Going back a week it was Terang Pacers and Trotters Cup night on Saturday February 19 in the Western District with a number of indifferent results during the evening.

Restrained from outside the front line to the tail of the field as stablemate Demon Delight (gate two) crossed polemarker Highway To Heaven as the starter released the field to lead easily with the favourite Willie Go West (gate three) forced to lead up the outside division, Bettor Be The Bomb (one/one from the extreme draw), Phoenix Prince one/two from inside the second line and Tango Tara (gate five) trapped three wide. Things were to change when Tango Tara went forward to race exposed giving Willy Go West cover, with both Bettor Be The Bomb and Phoenix Prince pushed back a spot.

Racing for the bell Chris Alford eased Willie Go West three wide and with a brilliant burst of speed and almost crossed Demon Delight only for the turn to come up allowing Demon Delight to retain the front running. Switching from the rear to three back the markers in the last lap, Sutton saved every inch of ground while needing luck to take part in the finish.

Approaching the final bend Willie Go West was a spent force with Demon Delight giving a kick, Better Be The Bomb three wide and Phoenix Prince four wide looking the winner with both Highway To Heaven and Like A Wildfire using the sprint lane and it was Like A Wildfire inside Highway To Heaven who finished best to prevail by a neck over Phoenix Prince out wide to give the stable the quinella, with Highway To Heaven third three metres away.

In quarters of 31, 28.5, 28.5 and 28.7, Like A Wildfire returned a rate of 1-58.2 well outside of Maraetai’s 1-56 set in 2019.

T heyallendiny came from the tail to finish third 4.3 metres back after following the runner-up home.

Fast start

■ Cranbourne commenced the week on February 21 with a nine race card and Rockbank’s Freddy Spiteri was successful with 5Y0 The Best Madrik-The Kahmotion mare Megeve in theAldebaran Park Trotters Mobile over 2080 metres.

Beginning fast from outside the front line, Megeve couldn’t head off Wingman Fling (gate two) on her inside, but was able to drop to the back of the leader to enjoy the run of the race.

When the hot favourite Chicago H (four back the markers) from gate five and first up in Oz, eased away from the inside to race uncovered for the last lap and dashed clear prior to the home turn, Megeve was extricated to be outside him but appeared unlikely to score as Chicago H kept on giving until the shadows of the post when Megeve nabbed him to prevail by 1.8 metres. Ero Carpe Diem (three back the markers) was third 7.4 metres away. The mile rate 202.7.

Coming off a disappointing sixth at Gunbower the previous Sunday when trailing the leader and winner Hayjoshandco, Happyaslarry began brilliantly from gate five to lead throughout, running his rivals ragged to greet the judge by 4.7 metres from Cracked Pepper which trailed making no impression over the concluding stages. The race changed complexion racing for the bell when the leader galloped allowing Sonnumberone to angle into the one/one for the last lap with Little Tedey which had raced parked taking over. Moving three wide on the final bend, Sunnumberone ran home best to score by 3.6 metres from Gee Cee Calder which had gone forward to race exposed for the last lap, with Sonokos Son third 7 metres back after following the leader. Open field for Guineas

■ With a number of fancied runners not being accepted for the Australian Guineas it has left the race wide open.

The smart Pinstriped, a winner of his only three starts, looks the one to beat now.

He was impressive in beating Pascero and Captivant at Caulfield in the C.C. Hayes Stakes over 1400 metres.

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Captivant, an unlucky third last start, will come right into it.

He ran third in the C.S. Hayes Stakes over 1400 metres. at Flemington behind Pinstriped and Pascero.

Pascero ran a gallant second after two good wins at Sandown, and would probably lead them up over the ‘mile’ trip.

Then you have Forgot You, prepared by Trent Busitton and Natalie Young, who was favorite in last year’s Victoria Derby. He came home hard in the Hayes Stakes to run a good fourth.

One I feel that will be right in this is the Sydney youngster, Converge, a good third behind the top colt, Anamoe, in the Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill.

In the powerful Gai Waterhouse-Andrew Bott camp, he will be there when the whips are cracking. I like Pinstriped and Converge.

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia’s highly popular fast track program is now open.

Now entering its fifth year, the national training scheme offers young people with a passion for horses a pathway into the breeding sector.

Developed in response to the industry staffing shortage, the 12-month program is designed to target people from outside of breeding and racing to introduce them tom Australia’s vibrant thoroughbred scene.

“The program has proved its success with 90 per centof graduates still working in the Industry, so it’s exciting to start the process of finding our next recruits” said TBA Chief Executive, Tom Reilly.

“Fast Track is designed to give the trainees a great education, and provide them with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to build successful careers in the industry”.

Successful applicants commence a full-time traineeship with a stud farm while studying for a Certificate111 in Horse Breeding- a nationally recognised formal qualification.

They are paid a full-time wage, even while studying.

To complement the on-the-job learning, students attend two intensive learning blocks in Scone (NSW), (six weeks in total), where they receive a mix of practical training and classroom theory.

They also take part in a variety of field trips and personal development workshops.

Fast Track is open to anyone who is 18 years and over, and previous graduates have come from far and wide, including WesternAustralia, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales.
