NEW RESTRICTIONS: 5 TEST POSITIVE

■ FIVE new positive COVID-19 cases mean that new restrictions came into effect at 6pm Tuesday (May 25).

Private gatherings are limited to five visitors a day; public gatherings are restricted to 30 people. Face masks must be worn indoors including in shopping centres and workplaces.

Two men in their 30s and 70s, a woman in her 30s and a pre-schooler, all in the City of Whittlesea, have been confirmed as cases. A man in his 60s was the fifth case announced yesterday (Tue.).

The restrictions follow a blunder where the incorrect supermarket in Epping was identified as a public exposure site.

“Our investigations reveal the individual shopped at the Woolworths Epping North supermarket, corner Epping Rd and Lyndarum Drive (2 Lyndarum Drive), from 5.40pm to 6.38pm on Saturday, May 8,” said Professor Brett Sutton.

“The original exposure site was Woolworths Epping, corner of Cooper and High St s, Epping, on May 8 – a location which is adjacent to other exposure sites. This was an error,” Prof. Sutton said.

Prof. Sutton said that the Department of Health picked up traces of COVID-19 in the wastewater around the Epping and Wollert area.

■ Diamond Valley College went into lockdown on Wednesday last week (May 19) after a dispute between a teacher and a student. Police deemed the situation to be under control with no injuries or damage reported.

■ The Risk and Audit Committee of Murrindi Shire Council has made recommendations it feels that Councillors should adopt: ■ That Council have the discretion to directly appoint an independent member for a second three-year term without going through a public recruitment process.

Collision at Epping ■ Greensborough Highway Patrol are investigating following a two-car collision in Epping on Thursday evening.

Investigators have been told a silver Holden Commodore was observed by Police travelling north on Edgars Rd at a fast rate of speed when officers attempted to intercept the vehicle.

The vehicle failed to pull over and Police did not pursue the vehicle.

A short time later, the vehicle collided into a black Hyundai at the intersection of Cooper St about 10.20pm.

A driver of the Commodore, a 19-yearold Hampton Park man, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.

Two passengers, aged 19 and 21 both from Mt Evelyn, were taken to hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 27-year-old woman, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to hospital.

60 TV sets seized ■ Investigators from the Mill Park Divisional Response Unit have seized more than 60 suspected stolen televisions while busting a crop house in Lalor.

Officers executed a search warrant at a Dalton Rd residential address and discovered the hydroponic set-up about 12.30pm.

Police located 10 mature cannabis plants that were being cultivated at the address.

A further search of the address discovered over 60 televisions, two electronic bikes, 12 speakers, a bar fridge, a washing machine and several vacuums, all suspected to be stolen goods. Nobody was present at the time of the warrantandnoarrests have been made at this stage.

‘Overtourism’ in Valley ■ There are too many tourists in part of the Yarra Valley, according to Christian Nielsen of a newly formed alliance of community groups in the Upper Yarra.

“Overtourism is the issue,” says the group.

“The Alliance is particularly addressing currently in the town of Warburton.

Mr Nielsen says that ‘overtourism” is the phenomenon whereby certain places of interest are visited by excessive numbers of tourists, causing undesirable effects for the places visited.

Nillumbik celebrates its platypus ■ Nillumbik Council is celebrating the muchloved platypus with a series of free, family friendly events.

The Council in conjunction with Melbourne Water is presenting activities online, in Eltham, and in Diamond Creek until May 30.

Highlights include webinars run by scientists and experts; a water bug discovery activity at the Diamond Creek Adventure Playground; a clean-up day in Diamond Creek; a self-guided platypus discovery bike tour along the Diamond Creek Trail, and a celebration day at Edendale Community Environment Farm with music and entertainment, face painting, art and craft, farm tours and more.

Mayor Cr Peter Perkins said the events offer an opportunity for children and adults to discover more about the platypus, which is a threatened species.

“Being home to the Diamond Creek, Nillumbik provides an important habitat for platypuses,” Cr Perkins said.

“Everyone can do things like keeping their dogs on a lead around waterways, not littering, and participating in clean-up days to help platypuses.

$62,884 for Mayor ■ Murrindindi Shire Mayor Cr Sandice McAulay should be paid $62,884 Mayoral Allowance plus 10 per cent superannuation equivalent, accordin g to a recommendation being put to this week’s Council meeting.

Under the proposal the allowance for each Councillor should be $21,049 plus 10 per cent superannuation.

Councillors will consider releasing the proposed Mayoral and Councillor allowance rates to the community for a 28-day period of consultation.

Sir, There is a saying that you can make things foolproof but not idiot proof. This saying came to mind recently when I became aware of an incident in the Yea Railway Park children's playground.

Before I share with you the nature of this incident, I think it would be useful to make clear the difference between 'foolproof' and 'idiotproof'.

Foolproof means that the thing we are referring to is incapable of going wrong or being misused. On the other hand, an idiot has a great lack of intelligence, common sense and is incapable of rational conduct. Therefore it is very difficult to make anything 'idiotproof'.

With this in mind, I'm sure that the Murrindindi Shire thought that they had installed foolproof seating within the Railway Park children's playground. A wonderful public amenity.

Enter the idiot - who decides that it would be OK to remove the anchor nuts from a picnic table which only has one central anchor point. The table looks OK albeit finely balanced on its very small (now unsecured) base plate. What could possibly go wrong?

Of course, to any rational individual the answer is obvious. The table is now a very serious safety risk to all users of the playground.

This is what played out on Sunday morning (May 16) when a heavily pregnant woman sat at the table and it toppled over. Fortunately she had sat facing away from the table and was able to break her fall. Had she sat facing the table - it would have been difficult to escape a more serious outcome.

The damage to the table had been reported to the Shire Council on the Thursday (May 13) morning prior to the incident I have related.

Why the delay in attending to this clear risk to public safety? The table was not made safe until that Sunday (May 16) afternoon.

So much for a foolproof installation by the shire. So, what of our perpetrator? Well, in my view that individual is just an idiot with a spanner. Perhaps there is a village somewhere crying tears of joy as its idiot has gone missing?

Local News Reconciliation at Yarra Ranges Shire

■ Community members will be able to tune into Yarra Ranges Shire Council’s Reconciliation Week event from home tomorrow (Thu.) Adam Goodes and Archie Roach will take the virtual stage for the event.

‘Our Country, Our Future, Our Shared Responsibility’ will be broadcast online from 10am on Thursday (May 27) featuring speeches and performances by Brooke Wandin, Uncle Dave Wandin, Ash Dargan, Aunty Judy Atkinson, Uncle Richard Frankland, Adam Goodes, Victor Steffensen and Archie Roach.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Fiona McAllister, said the event would be a celebration of the continuing cultures of First Nations people over more than 60,000 years, and a reminder of the history we all share.

“We are all custodians of this land that we call home, and our connection with country is a strong part of our identity, our shared passions and our way forward as community,” Cr McAllister said.

“The responsibility that we must lean into is knowing what’s occurred before and how the past influences the present. It’s learning from that history and culture so we continue to strengthen our community.”

■ The State Labor Government was on the front foot last week with a Budget that workis towards ending family violence and building a more equal future for women.

There is an aim toi help people from diverse backgrounds and more practical support for victim survivors.

The State Budget looks ro deliver $521.6 million to end family violence and progress gender equality. This includes a $354 million investment to implement all 227 recommendations of the world-first Royal Commission into Family Violence, and builds on unparalleled investments of more than $3.1 billion.

Bushfire fight ■ The State Government says it is spendingmore than $517 million will go towards reducing the risk of bushfires, including $15.6 million to increase work to remove long grasses and other highly flammable undergrowth.

More than $133 million will upgrade the digital radio service for Forest Fire Management Victoria staff and other emergency response personnel, so forest fires are contained more quickly while also keeping firefighters safe.

This will mean personnel can avoid radio black spots and communicate better with other first responders – including Country FireAuthority volunteers – when fighting fires and responding to remote emergencies.

A further $22.5 million will use the expertise of Aboriginal cultural burning in Victoria’s land management, contributing to bushfire preparation in local communities.

‘Out of money’

■ Deputy Opposition Leader Cindy McLeish said the Government’s Budget sends a clear message that it is ut of money and raiding the pockets of country families, farmers and small business owners.

“Nearly $285 million is slashed from regional development and $61.3 million butchered from the agriculture budget,” Ms McLeish said.

“Cuts to biosecurity, no new money to fix crumbling regional roads and millions of dollars plundered from regional public transport to pay for trains in Melbourne.”

■ Marngrook Oval Pavilion in Diamond Creek has been officially opened.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Peter Perkins, Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green, Eltham MP Vicki Ward, along with the various user groups attended an event to mark its official opening on Saturday (May 22).

Danielle Green was representing Shaun Lenne, the Minister for Local Government and Suburban Development.

The new pavilion and lighting upgrade, a project worth almost $1.6 million, was funded through a Victorian Government Growing Suburbs Fund allocation and Nillumbik Shire Council.

The GSF allocation was more than $400,000 with Council contributing more than $1.1 million.

Youth Council meets at Mitchell ■ Young people interested in helping to shape the future of Mitchell Shire Council on important issues like mental health and youth services are invited to join the Youth Council.

There are 12 members on the Youth Council, four for each ward, with fortnightly meetings, events and functions, leadership and development excursions and a leadership camp.

Main aims for Youth Council are to: ■ Help Council understand issues and problems from the perspective of young people ■ Provide advice to Council about how concerns can be addressed ■ Develop local initiatives and programs for young people ■ Advocate on matters that affect young people.

To apply to be on Youth Council applicants need to be aged 12 to 24 years and live, work or study in Mitchell.

■ Murrindindi Children's Network held its annual Early Learning Conference on May 6 at Holmesglen at Eildon, after last year's event was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Network provides important care and services to children and families in the Shire and is supported by Murrindindi Shire Council.

'C.A.R.E' - which stands for 'Children Need Connection, Attachment, Relationships, Every Day' - was the theme for this year's event.

Keynote speakers included Walter Mikac, co-founder of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation (named after his daughters), who delivered an incredibly moving talk about his experience of losing his wife and two daughters in the Port Arthur massacre.

Walter spoke about how his desire to create something positive from the devastation, led him to starting the Foundation.

Walter believes that all children should have a safe and happy childhood without being subjected to any form of violence and the Foundation works to identify, prevent and respond to the modern challenges children and young people face.

Other speakers included Karen Dimmock, CEO of the Association for Children with a Disability, Early Childhood Consultant Louise Doratt, and Jo Fasano and Danni Forjam from the Department of Education and Training Victoria.

Participants discussed working with children with a disability; the importance of incorporating music and play into our early learning programs; the need to ensure quality education options are available for children in out-of-home care and promoting an understanding of the additional needs of vulnerable children in our community.

Council's Community Engagement and Wellbeing Portfolio Councillor Damien Gallagher said he was thrilled to attend the conference, together with Mayor Sandice McAulay and Cr Karine Haslam.

“It was an excellent opportunity for those working in the early childhood sector to meet with other professionals and it was fantastic to learn about some of the important issues that relate to the health and wellbeing of the children in our Shire.

“Each of the speakers were incredibly inspiring and it was tremendously valuable learning from their expertise and experience.

“The feedback from participants about the conference was very positive and I think everyone was very grateful to be able to come together and share such a special day, especially given they weren't able to last year.”

Attendees included all of the Shire's Family Day Care educators, kindergarten teachers and educators from all of the Shire's preschools, as well as staff from FamilyCare and the Department of Education and Training Victoria.

Mary and Anne Streets are partially unsealed roads located behind the Yea Primary School.

The unsealed sections have some existing drainage and limited kerb and channel, notes a report to Councillors.

Stylish farewell to Rebels clubrooms SATURDAY The AFL Outer East League Round 6 of the 2021 season saw Alexandra return to Rebel Park to host Yarra Junction for two games of football and four games of netball.

It was the Club's last home game in the current facilities that were built in the 1970s.

The Club's Under 17s had a bye so the Reserves started the day and kicked three unanswered goals in the first quarter before adding another five in the second quarter, the visitors undermanned but working hard.

The Rebels continued moving the ball fluently in the second half and kept the scoreboard ticking over to record a good win, 14.7 (91) to Yarra Junction 3.2 (20).

SENIORS A very large crowd of past players, committee and supporters joined current members to gather on the "hill of wisdom" to support the Seniors in a second versus third clash on a beautiful autumn day.

Ben Cooper was a late withdrawal with Sam Kidd returning to the team, the Rebels scoring the opening goal through Jordan LaurieRhodes, the visitors then replying through Johnson.

A brilliant pass by Ben Gunning to Ted Watkin resulted in a second goal before Watkin took a one-handed mark and kicked his second.

Tom Boots and Jos Builder were leading a strong defensive quarter as Joe Daniel and Brayden Norris kicked goals, Alexandra 5.1 to 1.2 at the first break.

Junction opened with a goal but the Rebels replied with a goal to Gunning, Cooper Phillips kicked long to Daniel for another goal, the Rebels on top as Ryley Norris and Henry Olsson were giving plenty of midfield drive before a Junction player was yellow carded and the resulting free kick to Jake Keath resulted in another goal, Alexandra 8.5 to 2.3 at half time.

The Rebels started the second half with a heavy knock to Dean Galea who handballed to Jason Degabriele who added another goal but the Junction team responded by kicking the next three goals in five minutes.

Brayden Norris steadied with a goal before Junction kicked another, Watkin then kicking a goal but Junction received a free kick and goal as Junction was back in the game, Alexandra 11.7 to 9.7 at the last change.

Brayden Norris opened the last quarter with a goal but Junction's Johnson kicked two goals before Olsson took a strong mark and kicked long to the square where Watkin kicked a goal off the ground.

A long kick forward was marked again by Watkin who kicked another as the Rebels finished off the game, Alexandra 16.8 (104) to Yarra Junction 11.10 (76), also receiving the George Steiner Cup for the first time since 2017.

The win was celebrated by a huge crowd for the last time in the old facilities that have served our community very well for 50 years.

Local Sport Yea Golf Club

■ On Monday the Pennant Team wandered off to Seymour for another round. An enjoyable day, weather behaved and lunch was good. The golf wasnot so good. Once again only one winning their game, another battling it out to the 18th still not able to score a victory, others back in the club house a little earlier licking their wounds.

On Wednesday it was a social day as all were in preparation for the Challenge Bowl the next day and what an exciting day it was.

The morning had arrived, all geared up to go keeping fingers crossed that the heavens didn’t open up. Some 54 players all lined up in anticipation hoping to take home some fame for the day. A few drops scared a few, the clouds hanging around to keep us on our toes but thankfully no more drops and the sun really tried hard to appear. The course looked in top shape, thank you to all the volunteers you do a fantastic job. Judging by the scores many struggled to keep it together.

When all had completed their 18 holes it was back to the Club House for presentations, food and shopping. Whilst we were out chasing the little white ball ‘The House of Golf’ had appeared on our veranda setting up shop to entice many with lots of bargains to purchase. Judging by the many smiling faces they had succeeded. Lunch next and a big thanks to the ladies, another sterling job. Hot soup, crusty bread and of course those naughty calories in the shape of sweets, always a favourite for many.

One of our teams managed to secure the points to win our own Bowl. Team Di Elliott, Vicki Clements and Vicky Butler. We are proud of you. Di Holdsworth took the BGrade win. Also another top effort: three of the 4 NTP were won by the local girls: Margie Wright, Meryl Connell and Vicki Clements. Not much of the Booty Escaped the clutches of the locals. A very Happy Crew and another very successful Day much to the delight of a weary Captain Miranda Gill.

- Karen Sangster YEACHALLENGEBOWL Wednesday saw six teams of three contest an Irish Stableford Event at Yea. For the first six holes the best stableford score per team counts. On the second six holes, the best two scores count and on the last six holes all scores count. Winners with a team score of 69 were Neil Ross (33), Bill Dredge (18) and new member Paul Clayton (8).

Runners-up were Ken Whitfort (3), Mick Spagnolo (6) and Russell Wealands( 18) with 68. Mick Spagnolo was NTP on the 14th and the team of Graeme Bryant, Norm McCallum and David Ngo were the lucky Club Award winners receiving $4 each.

- Alan Pell BOYS WIN PENNANT Sunday saw an exciting and nail biting win to our boys pennant final at Seymour versus Eildon GC. In five close matches the last 30 minutes saw fortunes ebb and flow.

Number 5 for Yea lost on the 18th to go down by 2. Number 4, Captain Greg Clements went to the 19th where he sank a 10 foot putt to win 1 up. Number three missed a putt on the 17th to continue the match and lost 2/1. Number 2 Lachie Wischer had a dogfight with his opponent but prevailed with two excellent pars to win 2/1, With the final 2-2, Wayne Rowe Number 1 held a hole lead going down the 18th only to lose posting a 7 to his opponent’s 5. Things getting pretty tight.

Wayne on the 19th a par 3 hit the back of the green while his opponent was short right 15 metres off the green. The Eildon player chipped up to 8 feet and Wayne chipped up just missing the hole but going by 4 feet. The Eildon player left his putt just short and Wayne stood tall sinking the par putt to win 1 up. It has been 18 years since we have won a pennant final and Greg Clements, Jonathon Fisher, Lachie Fisher, Kevin Coghlan and Wayne Rowe have done us proud. Many thanks to Rick Wills (6th man) and John Tanner for caddying. It was also great to see Sam Wright, John Phillips, Mark Mullaly and Vicki Clements out there supporting our boys. I had the pleasure to caddy for Lachie and he has a world of potential in golf. The boys celebrated back at the clubhouse and it was great to see Neil Peterson, Martin Lowe,,Gary Pollard and Russell Wealands attend and express their congratulations.

Saturday saw 21 men contest the first round of the N.J. Murray Trophy which was postponed from last week. Winner with 36 points was Bill Dredge (19) from Carl Maffei (22) with 34 points on CB from PhilArmstron (22) third, Brian Simmons (11) 33 was fourth from fifth Anthony Coleman (4) with 31. Rob O’Halloran was NTP on the 18th and Mark Mullaly won the Club Award. - Alan Pell

Thanks from Thornton ■ Thornton Eildon District Football Netball Club hosted both netball and football at home Saturday ( May 22).

The Club welcomed both Yea D-Grade netballers and Yarra Junction Women’s footballers for a well-received supporter turnout to cheer both sides on. We thank everyone who came along and supported our humble little country club.

Some important items we would like to highlight this week are as follows.

■ We would like to thank Scott Whitehead together with Goulburn Valley Water for his community service in cleaning our netball court during the week.

With no play during 2019, our court deteriorate further and having our court cleaned off has assisted in improving its surface to keep our players plus community who utilise the courts safer.

■ Auskick has commenced at Thornton on Tuesdays at 4.30pm to 5.30pm, all are welcome to come along. Feedback indicates great fun sessions with around 20 kids, meaning each child getting the most out of each session.

■ Community Dinners will continue right through the season each Thursday evening serving healthy meals from 7pm.

We would love to welcome anyone from the community to come along, as our members are friendly and love chatting to those who live in our area.

■ National Volunteer Week was highlighted this week, and we give thanks to all that helps keep TEDFNC running. All our players contribute making Thornton be a warm, inviting place which we take great pride in. Our club rooms have seen a lot of faces through the doors to date, is well used and loved however the atmosphere on Saturday is purely there because of all the volunteers! We say Thank you.

NETBALL This week’s game against Yea started at a crisp 9am, surrounded by fog.

Both sides got off to an even start as we warmed into the game. Thornton's netball side was supported by a few footballers (exnetballers) filling in this week, which made for a great social game.

The first quarter went quickly with both teams making clean passes down the court with minimal turn overs, but Thornton taking an early lead.

The second quarter saw Yea make some great progression, gaining the lead back by one goal: 10-11.

By the third quarter the sun was coming out

and Thornton found a solid rhythm.

Smooth passes, great defence and clean feeding into the circle saw Thornton gain the lead again 18-13.

With a final score of 31-17, it was well celebrated and great to have another win on the board. We would like to extend our thanks to Yea for their flexibility with playing at Thornton and to our supporters on the day for cheering us on.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL Some 21 players took to the field mid-afternoon last Saturday to play, for the second time this season, top of the ladder Yarra Junction.

We would like to thank the support staff this week, as our games would not run smoothly without so much off field support.

This round was a collective effort with Yarra Junction to raise awareness for Rett Syndrome, supporting the efforts by ‘Valley Vicious’ Lee Lawrence in raising funds and awareness for Rett Australia as his eldest daughter is currently fighting Rett. Rett Syndrome is a genetic disorder that only becomes apparent after 6 to 18 months of age after birth in females.

Those effected have developmental impairments in language and physically, with lower life expectancy. There is current ongoing research with hope of finding a cure.

After welcome to country from President Heather Mason, the game got underway with Thornton applying pressure on experienced Junction.

Stand out performances from the mid field included co-coach Tash Hay, Jess Slapp and ruck women Lucy McRae while Rose Kealy dominated in the back line the second half of the game. There were many rotations of positions during the game with strong performances from Kelly ‘Roo’ Fitzpatrick, first gamer Catherine Hoinville and netballer Tenielle Collins.

Every player gave 100 per cent on the day, the score board was by all means not reflective of the on-field efforts and each lady came off the field with their heads held high looking forwards versing this friendly yet talented side again in a few weeks’ time.

K’lake takes 93-point win SENIORS Kinglake 16.26 (122) defeated Yea 4.5 (29) Yea did all they could against undefeated Kinglake on Saturday before fading late to go down by 93 points.

The Lakers made the early running to jump out to a 28-point lead at the first change and stretched it out to 50 by the major break.

However, the visitors fought back and actually outscored the ladder leaders in the third term, before running out of legs in the last quarter.

Daniel Evans was outstanding in defence and received great support from Mitch Ryan and Xavier O'Dwyer despite the Kinglake onslaught.

Harrison Jarvie and Julian Mahon were industrious through the middle alongside Darcy Pell, while Josh Carroll booted three majors.

The Tigers will square off against Warburton-Millgrove at home on the weekend.

Junior Sport Yea Football UNDER 9s It was a brisk foggy Sunday morning when the littlest tiger cubs took to the ground to play against St Marys.

Team play was evident, Darby marked the ball and took a run, kicking it to Jack which played onto being a point for the tigers. Cody was a strong defence in the backline. Luke was awarded a free kick which ended in a goal. Toby Johnston celebrated his birthday with his first match with the Under 9s.

Well done to the team on this frosty morning. St Marys came out strong with scoring a couple of goals in the first 10 minutes, with a few changes On the field, Yea’s defence picked up and pulled St Marys up from scoring any time soon. Jobe, Max and Lois where a power house in the centre, sending the ball forward to enable Yea to score a couple of behinds.

Jack and Sammy did a brilliant job in the backline defending the goals and feeding the back to the centre play. Eamon was a great all rounder helping out the team Unfortunately St Marys were too strong on the day Yea 8 def by St Marys 41 Awards: Evan Porter, Max Papadoplous, Eamon Garlick, Sammy Heyen, Jobe Dunne, Jack Johnson – Belinda Johnson UNDER 13s The sun came out for the Under 13s which was a blessing for players and spectators alike. The last time these two teams met Yea blew St Marys out of the water in the first quarter however this time the improvement by St Marys defence was evident allowing the Tigers to only have three scoring shots in the first quarter. Yea 1.2 (8) to St Mary's 0.0 (0). With a non defined scoring end Yea carbon copied their results from the first into the second but this time allowed St Marys on the board. Yea 2.4 (16) to St Marys 1.1 (7). Even though Yea's game structure was more attacking than it had been in previous weeks the scoring shots were still hard to come by with St Marys taking three shots to Yea’s two in the third. Yea 4.4 (28) to St Marys 2.3 (15). The last quarter saw some really great passages of play and ball movement by both teams which was really encouraging to see and the defensive pressure of Yea was what held them in such good stead in the end. Yea was leading for alot of the first half of the game only to lose in the last half, which was disappointing but showed massive improvement from the first time they met. The game as a whole gave the boys some much needed confidence and made Coach Rob very proud of all the boys. Connor Sier came home to join the team from Ballarat which is always great to have him back. Jacob Heyen won the RMH award for his ability to run the opposing player down and tackle them no matter what size they are. Even though it’s Jacob’s first season of footy he definitely has a natural ability for the sport. Memphis Fitzgerald won the Marmalades award after he was moved into the ruck and took on coaching advice to go for the centre tap which he did and continued to get it. Memphis set a target of ten possessions to get throughout the match, which he smashed. Fletcher Archibald had a great game running with the ball for half the ground sometimes and added to the scoreboard on a number of occasions. Bradley Birchall displayed as usual a great standard of footy, kicking two goals and showing us all why he’s the captain. Our defence line in the first half was too good for Seymour to get through.

Jaxson Tainton Allen kicked four goals being the top goal scorer for the match.

When The Rain Stops Falling ■ Theatre Works and Iron Lung Theatre present Andrew Bovell's multi award-winning play When the Rain Stops Falling at Theatre Works from July 10 - 31.

Directed by Briony Dunn, When the Rain Stops Falling spans four generations over eight decades across two countries, between a prediction in London in 1959 and its outcome in Australia 80 years later.

Set in Alice Springs, 2039. A fish falls from the sky. It’s been raining for days, the apocalypse moves ever closer and Gabriel York knows something is wrong. And so begins this epic sprawling drama, where fish fall from the sky, a daughter inherits a secret and where the rain never stops.

Taking place between two worlds, When The Rain Stops Falling reaches from the claustrophobia of a small flat in rainy London in 1959 to the windswept coast of South Australia and beyond, following the journey of Gabriel Law as he retraces his father’s footsteps, desperately attempting to solve the mystery of his disappearance.

“Andrew Bovell has an incredible way of making the everyday reach out and touch us in an extraordinary way. And this play does that,” explains Iron Lung’s Director Briony Dunn.

● Helen Koehne and Adam Jon ■ In the 19th century, opera went to the people in far-flung regional areas, thanks to innovative entrepreneurs who set up their own companies and took to the road.

That tradition is alive and well in 2021, thanks to GBD Productions' Mr Lyster's Touring Opera Company, which is taking its current production of Donizetti's comic opera Don Pasquale, to various Victorian regional locations, including Tarnagulla, Oxley, Avoca and Daylesford.

As in the 19th century, the arrival of an opera company in town is a big event, and country opera lovers are flocking to hear the company perform in their own town, without the bother of a trip to a large regional centre or Melbourne. So it's no surprise that some of the dates are already booked out.

But Melbourne opera lovers won't miss out - Don Pasquale is coming to Prahran's MC Showroom on Sunday June 13 at 2pm, for its only Melbourne performance.

This light and frothy opera centres around Ernesto wanting to marry his beloved Norina, but his uncle Don Pasquale wants him to marry a mire noble wife so Don P doesn't have to look after his nephew any more.

So the Don gets together with the conniving Dr Malatesta to trick the young lovers, and the story follows the usual twists and turns of romance, but does have a happy ending.

Don Pasquale is full of beautiful music, played on the piano by Pamela Christie, following the tradition of the 19th century touring operas.

Rising young star Adam Jon is playing Dr Malatesta, and in a strange twist of fate, Adam was studying on an opera scholarship in Italy, and was about to take to the stage of the Pavarotti theatre as Dr Malatesta, when two weeks before show time, everything was shut down and he had to return to Australia.

Needless to say, Adam is delighted to have the chance to strut his stuff as Dr Malatesta in his hometown and state.

Joining Adam on stage are Helen Koehne, Hew Wagner, Jamie Moffat, Trevor Mills, Jessica Joan Graham, Adelaide Soccio Greenaway, Josh Morton-Galea and Thomas Saar.

What’s On Yarra Valley Writers Festival

■ The second Yarra Valley Writers Festival will be held between July 16 -18 in various locations in Warburton.

This word-filled event features contemporary Australian writers and thinkers discussing the theme of resilience.

En Pointe

■ I confess I don’t know my jetés from my pliés, nor my pirouettes from my fouettés, but I have transformed into a ‘balletomane’ after seeing En Pointe. Morning Melodies began in 1985 and this 451st concert was the first for 2021. There could be no finer way to celebrate the Arts, than to experience the supreme talent of the Australian Ballet students at Hamer Hall.

Paquita grand pas classique is an excerpt from the 19th century ballet Paquita, with music by Ludwig Minkus, and staged by Joanne Michel and Andrew Murphy after Marius Petipa. Set in Spain, a red-lit background framed the dancers, perfectly complementing their gorgeous costumes and exuberant dancing. A grand pas classique is a ‘dance with variations to demonstrate ballet technique’, including ensembles, duets and solos. The dancers displayed stunning athleticism and finesse and the music swelled stirringly as everyone participated in the spirited finale.

Next was Little Chaos. Bare-topped men in grey tights slithered onto the stage, the grey background a sombre accessory as dancers leapt and writhed to an insistent score by Ólafur Arnalds and Ezio Bosso. Heavy on strings, the music and movement gradually slowed, as the dancers alternately slid and flopped to the floor, the frenzied pace reaching stillness. Choreographer Simon Dow developed this piece during COVID, as students faced six months of remote learning - especially trying for dancers unable to graduate in 2020.

Waltz of the Hours from Coppélia by Arthur Saint-Léon, was staged by Sabrina Lezzi with music by Léo Delibes. The dancers wore elegant black dresses and the dancing was assured, occasionally employing jerky, doll-like steps, as befits Coppélia.

The final piece was White Nights, choreographed by Stephen Baynes with music

by Alexander Borodin. Courtship rituals were enacted with vigour then languid grace, as the dance ended quietly and gently.

The concert was a terrific showcase for the next generation of ballet stars for the Australian Ballet. The future looks extremely rosy.

Observations The Image is Not Nothing

■ How does the world remember its collective trauma?

The exhibition, The Image is not Nothing (Concrete Archives), presented across two venues, Living Museum of the West, Pipemakers Park, Maribyrnong and Margaret Lawrence Gallery, University of Melbourne Southbank, looks at acts of genocide, terror and collective memory.

The curators, Lisa Radford and Yhonnie Scarce, have put together artworks from 20 emerging and established international and Australian artists representing moving legacies of moments in our cultural history that we’d rather forget but must remember.

Andree Korpys and Markus Löffler’s video installation Reflecting Absence reveals echoes of triumphalist New York monuments, the Stock Exchange, the statue of George Washington on Wall Street, Trump Tower and Times Square in all its electrified brashness is juxtaposed with grainy images of tourists congregating at the twin reflective pools of the 9/11 memorial.

Like Super-8 holiday movies, the footage captures the nostalgic atmosphere of the past, disturbing our sense of the meaning of memorialisation.

Judy Watson’s video installation, The Witness Tree, asks what are indigenous memorials?

The tragedies accompanying colonisation still unobserved and unrecognised.

Nina Sanadze’s epic Apotheosis, a collection of disfigured, vandalised, defaced, mutilated wisps of Soviet monumental sculpture left lying on the ground, embodies a past regime long dead.

In light of the recent destruction rendered on Palmyra and the Bamiyan Buddhas, Sanadze taps into a sense of mourning for cultural heritage lost.

Phil Collins’s deeply moving video installation, zasto ne govorim srpski (na srpskom), is visceral in its depiction of the deadly conflict that followed the break-up of the former Yugoslavia.

Witness testimony reveals the erasure of language, and with it, genocide and crimes against humanity.

There are many more evocative works in this exhibition. All leave a trace on our conscience.

First win in 287 days

■ North Melbourne sealed its first win in 287 days, its first for season 2021 and its first under coach David Noble, leading to heart-warming post-game scenes in Hobart.

The Kangaroos trailed by a point against Hawthorn at threequarter time, but kicked four final term goals to get over the line by seven points.

It was the first of the 2021 season for this young team. A long way to go yet and I believe this group with a new coach has the opportunity to grow and be successful.

This proud club which was founded 152 years ago never gives up. Four Premiership cups on the trophy stand: 1975, 1977, 1996 and 1999.

We all partied like it was 1999 back then. I think I still have an injury from that time. We are in good hands in the top office with former player Ben Buckley as our Chairman; great facilities at Arden St, and I feel that the planets are aligning for 2022.

Back with the parents ■ For millions of young Americans, the pandemic has been a time machine back to the early eighties.

By July 2020, 52 per cent of 18 to 29 years or 26.6 million adults, were now residing with a parent, according to a new Pew Research Centre analysis, the highest number since the Great Depression.

In New York, some 300,000 left the city. Many of those people found themselves living in time capsules: lovingly preserved childhood bedrooms, plastered in posters and magazine cut-outs of boy bands and James Cameron blockbusters, and tricked out with décor from the Myspace era.

Many are still there. Jess Cohen, 39, was one of them. She left her Manhattan apartment during the pandemic to move back in with her family in Fresh Meadows, Queens.

Her modest bedroom hadn't changed since high school, two decades ago. A Titanic poster, a Barbie-sized Kate Winslet doll, the sign-in board from her Sweet Sixteen, stuffed animals and glass knickknacks from a school formal where just as she had left them. The girlish pink walls were the cherry on top of what feels like a ‘Blossom’ meets ‘Clarissa Explains It All’ retrospective.

Europe starts to re-open ■ The European Council has now agreed to recommend that member countries once again allow vacation travel, although it is not clear when those restrictions might be eased as individual countries will need to formalize the change.

But Scott Keyes, founder of Scott's Cheap Flights, says this bodes well for the usually busy summer travel season.

"The good news is for folks who have been able to get their shots, who are fully vaccinated, it seems like Europe travel will be open for you this summer and you can expect to be able to take those trips that so many of us have been putting off for the past year."

It is a big reversal from last summer when many countries prohibited Americans from entering because of climbing cases.

Now, with vaccinations as high as 76 per cent in parts of the Bay Area, the "Bienvenue, entrez vous" mat is out.

Keyes says this is also welcome news to the travel industry.

"There has been a lot of uncertainty about whether or not this summer travel season which is so important for folks who work in travel, especially in southern Europe was going to happen this year," he said.

"If we missed another summer travel season like we did this past year, that could have been an existential crisis for a lot of folks working in travel, a lot of people who rely on tourists to put food on the table.

“So I think this announcement from the EU that the summer travel season will likely not only happen but include vaccinated Americans I think is giving folks a lot of excitement and confidence for these upcoming months."

The EU is expected to start using a Digital Green Certificate for its own residents to store their vaccination information, but it is not clear if that system will also be put in place for travellers.

And with some European countries lagging behind in vaccinations, it is not known just what the conditions will be for travellers this summer.

■ China will soon confirm that its population has dropped for the first time since it started recording the figure in 1949, the Financial Times reports.

The new Chinese census was completed last year and its release was expected this month but has been mysteriously delayed.

The headline figure will reportedly show that the nation's population has declined below the 1.4 billion mark recorded two years ago, even though Beijing has relaxed most of its notoriously strict family-planning policies.

Huang Wenzheng, a fellow at Beijing think tank, the Centre for China and Globalization, said the census release will be "handled very carefully" because it could have "a huge impact on how the Chinese people see their country and how various government departments work."

He added: "The pace and scale of China's demographic crisis are faster and bigger than we imagined. That could have a disastrous impact on the country."

■ California is to begin increasing early release credits for about 76,000 inmates, including tens of thousands who were convicted of violent crimes, as the state continues to reduce its prison population.

The Associated Press reported that of the 76,000 who will be eligible for early release, some 63,000 were convicted of violent crimes.

They will now be eligible to obtain good behaviour credits that will "shorten their sentences by one-third instead of the one-fifth that had been in place since 2017."

That number includes 20,000 inmates who were sentenced to life sentences with the possibility of parole.

"More than 10,000 inmates convicted of a second serious but nonviolent offense under the state's 'three strikes' law will be eligible for release after serving half their sentences.

“That's an increase from the current time-served credit of one-third of their sentence."

In addition, nearly 2900 nonviolent inmates who were imprisoned as part of the "three strikes" law will be eligible for early release after serving half of their sentence.

Further, "all minimum security inmates in work camps, including those in firefighting camps, will be eligible for the same month of earlier release for every month they spend in the camp, regardless of the severity of their crime."

■ Do you find yourself reaching for the calculator, even for the really simple math problems?

There's a lot of concern these days that technology, like artificial intelligence, is too smart for its own good.

Despite fear over how intrusive these algorithms are becoming, a new study finds people are actually more willing to trust a computer than their fellow man.

Researchers at the University of Georgia say this is especially true when people find tasks too challenging to handle alone.

However, it's not just the "heavy lifting" humans are running to computers for help with. From choosing the next song in the playlist to finding better fitting pants, algorithms are making more and more of the daily decisions in people's lives whether they realize it or not. " Algorithms are able to do a huge number of tasks, and the number of tasks that they are able to do is expanding practically every day," says Eric Bogert, a Ph.D. student in the Terry College of Business Department of Management Information Systems, in a university release. "It seems like there's a bias towards leaning more heavily on algorithms as a task gets harder and that effect is stronger than the bias towards relying on advice from other people."

Magazine ■ I clearly remember interviewing June Bronhill in 1992. It was a bit like talking to Queen Elizabeth but there was a twinkle in her eye and I soon relaxed in her presence.

The radio interview was to promote a show that June was doing at that time titled, Legends.

I was at the opening night and when June sang Vilia from The Merry Widow, the hairs stood up on the back of my neck. It was marvellous and I will never forget it.

June Mary Gough was born in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1929 and began singing at the age of four. When June was 20 she came third in The Sun Aria Vocal and won the competition the following year.

She never forgot that it was the people of Broken Hill who raised the money to send her to England in 1952 to further her operatic studies.

Whilst in England she adopted the stage name of June Bronhill which was an abbreviation of her beloved home town.

June trained with the Sadler's Wells Company and became one of their leading coloratura sopranos. She appeared in leading roles in their productions of Die Fledermaus, The Gypsy Baron, Don Pasquale, The Telephone, Martha and Hänsel und Gretel.

Her performance in The Merry Widow in 1958 saved the company from financial ruin. In 1960 June Bronhill triumphantly returned to Broken Hill and the crowds flocked to the air-

In 1962 June Bronhill starred as Maria Von Trapp in the first Australian production of The Sound Of Music for J. C. Williamson's.

In 1962 June played Elizabeth Barrett Browning in the West End musical Robert and Elizabeth opposite another Australian, Keith Michell.

I still remember her performance in 1966 when she performed the role at The Princess Theatre in Melbourne, this time working with Dennis Quilley and Frank Thring.

During her fabulous career June starred in Gilbert & Sullivan productions such as HMS Pinafore, Iolanthe and Pirates of Penzance.

● June Bronhill She also starred in the musical comedies, The Maid Of The Mountains, Call Me Madam, A Little Night Music, Nunsense, My Fair Lady and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. In her later years June acted in several straight plays Arsenic And Old Lace and Straight And Narrow.

In 1977 she received the OBE for her services to the performing arts. June was married twice and had a daughter, Carolyn.

In 1980 she was cast as Mrs Slocombe in the Australian television version of Are You Being Served and played opposite one of the original cast members, John Inman.

June worked in many concerts and shows with her dear friend, Dennis Olsen. During her career she recorded more than 30 albums. Sadly June lost her hearing at the age of 65 and this impacted on her quality of life in her final years.

J June Bronhill passed away in a Sydney nursing home in January 2005. Her funeral was held in Broken Hill. Two days later, on Australia Day, there was a two minute silence held in her home town as a mark of respect for their beloved citizen.

June conquered the world and performed in operas, musical comedies and plays. June Bronhill truly earned the title of ‘Australian Legend’.

Pandora’s Box by Wendy Sharpe ■ Wendy Sharpe holds a longawaited Melbourne exhibition of both early and more recent paintings that, as the artist puts it, "depict the coexistence of the real and the imagined".

The show features an installation of more than 50 new framed pieces involving tactile elements like handles and doors.

These are painted with works from throughout Sharpe's career, reintroducing this historically significant practice to a new audience.

Exhibition closes June 5.

The winning work will be awarded $30,000 and will be acquired into MGA's nationally significant collection of Australian photographs.

The Smith and Singer People's Choice Award will be voted by the public with the recipient receiving $5000.

The MGA recognises the importance of supporting practicing artists, and the positive impact the prize money for both the winner and the Smith and Singer People's Choice Award will have on the recipients.

The Arts

Beside her wonderful voice her acting particularly in the sleepwalking scene was excellent.

Banquo was given a strong and enjoyable performance by Adrian Tamburini. His acting was enhanced by a wonderful bass showing how a good voice can lift a show.

A large chorus as determined by Verdi which gave voice to many and echoed across Her Majesty's Theatre. Another great production from Melbourne Opera giving Melburnians and visitors a chance to see operas not often seen in Melbourne.

Macbeth with Melb. Opera

■ Tuesday May 18 saw the Melbourne Opera present Macbeth

by Verdi at Her Majesty's Theatre Melbourne.

A great evening of opera to welcome Melbourne Opera's fans back to the theatre after COVID-19.

Director Bruce Beresford has said in his notes that this production is predominately the 1847 version but with Macbeth's last aria which has been restored.

The production made good use of a rear and front screen for extra effects. A large cast as Verdi increased the number of witches from the original three to 30 and he introduced a large group of jaunty assassins for the murder of Banquo.

This made for a very busy stage which on occasion did seem to be a little cramped.

Macbeth was portrayed by Simon Meadows who caught the character to perfection giving a good performance and his arias were superb. He had a great rapport with Helena Dix as Lady Macbeth.

Dix as Lady Macbeth was greatly appreciated by the opening night audience for her wonderful voice in her arias and duets. She also caught the essence of such a scheming woman with her own destiny in mind.

Surreal Landscapes - curated by Danny Lacy and Rosie Weiss Surreal Landscapes is a group exhibition that explores the way artists position subtle and strange, absurd and dreamlike interventions within the landscape, abstracting and shifting our reading of the landscape.

These interventions often exist around an historical or personal narrative and embed political and social commentary within these representations.

Stars: * * * ½ Review: A post-apocalyptic action-comedy of a young love-struck survivor of a "monsterpocalypse" who leaves his underground bunker after seven years of shelter and braves the creature-inhabited Earth in order to find his high school sweetheart.

Delightfully entertaining creature-feature adventure romp has everything fans of the genre could wish for, giant man-eating bugs, an immensely likeable lead on a cross country trek through monster infested terrain, quirky characters and the search for romance, the creature-feature equivalent reminiscent in plot of 2009's "Zombieland" (without the zombies) that delivers a refreshing blast on an age old formula that is sure to even entertain the more jaded of the genre.

"Maze Runner" star Dylan O'Brien is a standout as the love-struck boy on a death defying a mission, superbly displaying all the fear, loneliness, gusto and comic energy that ranks alongside the likes of "Indiana Jones," and is aided by a superb supporting cast that includes Jessica Henwick as the girlfriend he goes in search for, screen veteran character actor Michael Rooker (Mississippi Burning, JFK, Guardians of the Galaxy) as a survival expert our young hero meets along the way, along with a loveable pooch named "Boy." Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, this is a brisk, fun, lean, mean, thrilling, fresh, funny and ultimately an emotionally fulfilling post-apocalyptic dystopian survival romp, a well made journey inspired by many of the genre before it, but unlike too many of those that have also been inspired by the genre before them, "Love and Monsters" stands heads, tails and creatures above them, deservedly joining a long list classic creature-features that have thrilled and entertained audiences for generations.

Length: 100 Minutes.

Stars: * * ½ Review: A whodunnit crime-drama-mystery of an agoraphobic woman living alone in New York City who witnesses a disturbing act of violence while spying on her neighbours Based on the best selling thriller novel by A.J. Finn, and from a screenplay by celebrated Pulitzer Prize winning playwright (August: Osage County, Bug and Killer Joe) and actor (Lady Bird, The Post) Tracy Letts, this is ultimately nothing more than a inferior rehash of the timeless Alfred Hitchcock 1954 classic "Rear Window," but nonetheless, especially for younger generations who are yet to experience the world of the cinematic master of suspense, there's enough here to hold interest throughout as the all too familiar plot twists unfold.

Competently directed by Joe Wright, whose previous credits include the Oscar nominated "Pride and Prejudice" (2005) and the Oscar winning "Atonement" (2007) and "Darkest Hour" (2017), has here put together a stellar cast beginning with six time Oscar nominee Amy Adams in a surprisingly shallow performance as the overly stressed, pill popping agoraphobic psychologist who witnesses the crime from her window, Oscar winner Gary Oldman as the suspected abusive husband, along with Oscar winner Julienne Moore, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Wyatt Russell as the tenant, and Tracy Letts as the psychiatrist to our troubled protagonist.

Heavily inspired by the film-noir genre of the '40s and '50s, most notably such classics as Otto Preminger's "Laura" (1944), "Dark Passage" (1947) and the Hitchcock classics "Spellbound" (1945) and, not surprisingly, "Rear Window" (1954) itself, there's a lot on offer with an abundance of possibilities, but sadly falls short on atmosphere, exposition and emotion to the full effect, but the cast do their best as they weave in and out of the dark and tangled web of deceit, and for this reason it's worth the time and effort, however, as long as the Hitchcock's "Rear Window" is out there, this window will always remain a distant and foggy reflection of the unsurpassed textbook masterpiece that inspired it.

Rourke’s Reviews First Love ■ (MA). 110 minutes. Opens in selected cinemas May 27.

Initially set for theatrical release March last year, Takashi Miike's energetic, highly entertaining action/ comedy/romance thankfully receives a much-deserved big screen release, and is a crazed, often hilarious cross between After Hours (1985) and Stranger Of Mine (2005).

A budding romance between Reo (Masataka Kubota) and Monika (Sakurako Konishi) is put to the test, as they inadvertently become involved with warring gangsters and corrupt cops over a very memorable night.

Miike plays out the outlandish scenario with skilled precision, and there are standout performances from Shota Sometani and Becky.

RATING - ****

Oxygen ■ (M). 101 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Alexandre Aja, whose body of work as a director has been variable at best, delivers his best film since High Tension (2003), the knockout horror/thriller that put him on the cinematic map.

The less you know about the plot the better, suffice to say that Elizabeth (Melanie Laurent) wakes up in a medical chamber, and has to figure out how she got there and why, before her dwindling oxygen supply runs out.

Although Aja's visual clues gives away some plot turns way too early, there is still much fun to be had, and this works better than the somewhat disappointing Ryan Reynolds film, Buried (2010).

Slick and well-paced, and despite its one chamber setting, the film zips by quickly, indicating that the film-makers have successfully drawn the viewer in. Laurent does well in her confined setting, while Mathieu Amalric is perfectly cast as the voice of the A.I. central computer, M.I.L.O. The interaction between Elizabeth and M.I.L.O certainly reminded me of Donald Cammel's classic 1977 film, Demon Seed.

Those Who Wish Me Dead

■ (MA). 100 minutes. Now showing in cinemas.

Routine and formulaic, seemingly cobbling together plot threads from every action/thriller from the late 90s-early 00s, the latest film from Taylor Sheridan is genuinely disappointing.

Hannah (Angelina Jolie) is your standard action hero, a fire jumper

relegated to menial field work after a rescue that went horribly wrong, with fatalities that continue to haunt her.

While stationed at a fire tower, Hannah encounters Connor (Finn Little), a young boy who is on the run from two assassins (Aidan Gillen and Nicholas Hoult), who have killed his whistleblower father, and are now pursuing him , thinking the child may be carrying vital information.

Hannah must protect Connor, while also trying to avoid a forest fire which is raging through the immediate area.

Everything in the script is thin and familiar, and even Jolie's role is dull and one-dimensional.

The two assassins, supposedly among the best in the business, make some seriously illogical mistakes (reminding me of Tom Cruise's alarmingly dumb killer in Collateral).

Taylor Sheridan needs to stick to writing, as his attempts at directing (here and Yellowstone TV series) leave much to be desired, and is unbalancing his undeniable talents as a screenwriter.

His heavy-handed attempts at making this a modern western just shows what a terrific job David Mackenzie did on the Sheridanpenned Hell Or High Water (2016).

While not as bad as Firestorm (1998), this is an action film to forget.

Spiral : From The Book Of Saw ■ (R). 93 minutes. Now showing in cinemas.

Great potential goes wanting in this awful attempt to revitalise the Saw franchise.

Chris Rock plays a grizzled detective who heads a gruesome case that appears to imitate the notorious Jigsaw murders that plagued the city.

Relevant subject matter is pushed aside to trot out the sameold-same-old. Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw 2, 3 and 4) sinks everything with his cliched, clumsy and highly outdated approach, and the twist is painfully easy to pick, but not as painful as the non-ending which sets everything up for yet another sequel.

■ Writer, Director John Krasinski described his sequel of A Quiet Place II in one word, “Deeper” to that of the widely acclaimed Part I when asked online from New York at the end of recent preview screening at a Melbourne Cinema.

More so in that Part II goes deeper into exploring the relationship of the Abbott family siblings to their mother following the loss of their father in Part I. All against a background of overwhelming odds following some 400 days of terror and the destruction of their home town, the Abbotts are forced to seek help and possible human life in a post-apocalyptic world.

Venturing into the unknown but soon realizing the blind alien monsters, rampant in Part I are still lurking and hunting humans by reacting to the slightest sound.

Beginning Part II, Krasinski recalls the tranquility of day 1 in Part I of the Abbott family enjoying a Little League Baseball Game watching son Marcus (Noah Jupe) about to hit out.

Only to be halted by a blaze in the sky with aliens descending and immediately causing mayhem, terror, death and destruction of the Town, leaving family patriarch Lee Abbott (John Krasinski) dead.

Some great sequences are played out and needed to be seen

before we jumped to the core of Part II, day 474 when the remaining Abbotts’ set out with mother, Evelyn (Emily Blunt) with her new born baby, deaf daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and deaf son Marcus.

There are several intertwining stories as they venture out, Evelyn leaving the safety of a disused steel furnace to find oxygen cylinder for her baby, leaving him the care of son Marcus, while determined daughter Regan has snuck out on her own to seek help.

During this time Emmett (Cillian Murphy) has survived and links up with the family and certainly endues all that the family do during the separate encounters that follow with the alien monsters.

Let’s not tell the story, but to say there are some outstanding performances by Emily Blunt determined for the sake of her children, Millicent Simmonds, living a world of silence with her lifesaving cochlear implant and deaf Noah Jupe quite exceptional as the injured Marcus.

Dare I say with Part II ending abruptly, does this mean a Part III? Devotees to Part I will not be disappointed with A Quiet Place Part II. Released nationally in selected cinemas from May 27.

‘Every Second’ counts ■ The trials and tribulation of IVF are well to the fore with award winning playwright Vanessa Bates, Every Second.

Drawing on her own experiences over 10 years of trying to conceive, she penned what is a dark comedy of two couples drawn together through their countless pregnancy tests while putting their relationships on the line.

It is a subject that has not often been a vehicle for theatre or widely discussed, however Every Second is an open and frank exposé, piece of theatre.

Wit Incorporated’s Director Emma Drysdale chose a communal lake on which to centre the couple’s encounters in what was a large open space, at times too distant and losing some of the intimacy, but that is the configuration of the Bluestone Church Arts Space with side walls seating.

The joint struggle to conceive tests the wife-husband relationship but more so stress on the wives.

Meg (Madeleine Magee Carr) gives a powerful performance throughout at times volatile, but delicately handling the simulated intercourse scenes with conviction with husband Tim ((Riley Nottingham)

Wife Jen (Lansy Feng) is more stable, undergoing acupuncture, praying to a statuette of the Virgin Mary, and seeking help with fertility symbols in the expectation she will be able to conceive. There are touching moments between Jen and Meg in their sharing of emotions. Husbands Tim and Bill run their own race with Tim (Riley Nottingham) another strong performance, while being shown to be unfaithful, and testing his intimacy with wife Meg does allow his love and empathy Meg at the end.

Bill (Richard Mealey) had some of the more lighthearted lines to deliver, with some great chemistry with wife Jen, particularly with their affirmation of love for each other so poignantly delivered.

The play can be close to the bone for those in the same predicament, but it is a story that should be shared, reminding us all of the fragility of IVF. Performance Season: Until May 29.

Early eyes on Queensland Derby

■ Some of Australia's best three-year-olds will contest the Queensland Derby this Saturday.

The Ciaron Maher-David Eustace trained youngster, Explosive Jack, is the favourite to take out the three-year-old classic over 2400 metres.

One of the best youngster's going around at moment, he has raced eight times for five wins and two minor placings.

Ridden by Irish rider, John Allen, he blitzed them in the recent South Australian Derby over this trip, and is the one to beat again.

On the second line of betting is his stablemate, Let's Karaka Deel, a good second to Explosive Jack in the SA Derby.

He too has proved his consistency, having won one of his eight starts with five seconds.

He was piloted by young Victorian jockey, Ben Allen, no relation to John, who won the Derby.

Prior to the South Australian Derby, he ran a good second to Royal Mile in the Port Adelaide Guineas.

He will be right in the firing line here, after being hampered in the run last start.

With Let's Karaka Deel on the second line, is the Chris Waller-trained, Senor Toba, who improved on his previous run by winning the Sir Frank Packer Plate over 2000 metres at Randwick on April 24.

He is by the leading sire Toronado, and going back to January 21, he won at Moonee Valley, by nearly two lengths after missing the start.

It would pay to forget his run when second up at Randwick, after being last on the turn, when eighth behind Kiku on a Heavy 9 track.

Waller likes what he sees at the moment with the grey three-year old.

One that will have no worries running the 2400 metres of the Derby is the Ciaron MaherDavid Eustace trained Through Irish Eyes, a New Zealand bred three-year-old.

He has only five starts for a win and three placings, and will have no worries with the trip.14pars.

Next is the Richard and Michael Freedman trained youngster, High Supremacy, who ran a good third behind Senor Toba and Achiever, in the Sir Frank Packer Plate at Randwick.

He is by the Cox Plate winner, Savabeel, out of the good race mare, Lady Chaparral, by High Chaparral.

He is inclined to get back in the field and finished hard over the 2000 of the Plate, and will be well suited here over 2400 metres. At the odds of about $12, he is worth a place bet.

The New Zealander, Hezashocka, trained by Emma Clotworthy, has good form, with a win at Ellersee, back on April 24, over 2100 metres.

The Matthew Cumani-trained, three-yearold Khoehoe is good on his day, and although he missed a place in the Sir Frank Packer Plate, he is much better than that, He is a winner of three of his 11 starts with three minor placings, that includes city wins.

He is not out of this and could run the place.

I like the favourite Explosive Jack and Let's Karaka Deel, they have the runs on the board.

Sires prices up

● Explosive Jack. Racing Photos. behind Hungry Heart and Duais. Prior to that was second in the Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick behind Duais.

By the Cox Plate winner, Ocean Park, she has had 11 starts, for two wins, and three placings, and the journey won't worry her.

Victorian Oaks winner, Personal, went around in the South Australian Derby, and got way out of her ground, finishing on, but missed the place.

Prior to that she had been most consistent for the Hayes-Dabernig combination. I feel the colts might be a bit too strong for her.

One to watch if it goes around, is the well preformed New Zealander, Daq Iansweet Junior, in the strong camp of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, having won over 2000 and 210 metres, with two wins and a placing, in eight starts.

■ The Australian Darley operation has announced their prices for their stallions for 2021.

Heading this year's team is the champion sire and-son duo of Exceed and Excel and his world champion sprinter, Bivouac.

Following a stellar 24 months both on the racetrack, and in the sales ring, where Exceed and Excel was responsible for a career-best $2.1 million colt earning him the title of leading sire by average at last month's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Exceed and Excel now headlines the roster fee of $ 132,000, including GST. His electrifying triple Group One winning son, Bivouac, will stand his first season at Kelvinside at a fee of $66,000, (including GST).

Relocating to Kelvinside this season is Street Boss, standing at $55,000, (including GST), on the back of his ever-increasing demand as an elite sire of two-year-olds.

As the sire of Group One, ATC Sires' Produce winner, Anamoe, and as well as the Group One Winterbottom Stakes winner in Western Australian in Elite Street.

Street Boss is one of only four Australian stallions to sire multiple Group One winners this season.

The roster includes a new trio of shuttle stallions, made up of European juveniles in 25 years.

Pinatubo will stand at $44,000 (including GST), who joins the Kelvinside roster in New South Wales.

Northwood Park's Victorian roster received a major boost with the additions of the world's highest-ranked horse of 2020, Ghaiyyath ($27,500 including GST).

Locals victorious at Charlton ■ Charlton HRC on course occupants Shane Sanderson and Greg Norman took the honours at the Charlton meeting on Monday May 17, each winning a race on the program.

Shane Sanderson combined with young son Ryan to land the Wally Churchill Memorial Pace over 2100 metres with Minimum Wage, a 6Y0 gelded son of P Forty Seven and Eight Ball who's last success had been at Maitland less than a month earlier.

Beginning best to lead from the pole, Minimum Wage was rated a treat at the head of affairs, just lasting to score by a head from Magic Mike (one/one at bell) after making several moves, with Ferocious Son third 23.7 metres away in third place from mid-field. The mile rate 1-58.9.

■ Greg Norman's classy Hes Watching-Mixed With A Twist 4Y0 mare Belladonna Girl first up since December with Kerryn Manning in the sulky, came out running from gate three to easily account for Dasha The Great which trailed by 2.7 metres in 1-57.1. Flying Jo was third 8.4 metres back after following the pair. Belladonna Girl is raced by Adelaide based AB & T Cormack Racing Pty Ltd. ■ Gordon trainer Tim McGuigan used the services of Greg Sugars to capture the Milakuk (Lightning) Pace over 1609 metres with honest 6Y0 Art Major-Blissful Night mare Rebeccas Art in 1-57.6.

Settling mid-field in the moving line from the extreme draw, Rebeccas Art despite racing three wide solo in the final circuit proved too strong to prevail by a half head from Hard Rock Shannon (five wide home turn) from the tail, with a deathseating Ghanasuya a nose away third a nose in advance of the pacemaker Murano in a blanket finish.

■ Grampians District trainer Codi Rauchenberger was successful with Sam Bourbon-This Way filly Honey Bourbon in the Murrup (Spirit) Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres and in doing so, made it two wins in succession this time in.

Driven by Terang's Jason Lee, Honey Bourbon was sent forward from outside the front line to lead and given every chance, scored easily by 6.3 metres over a game Glengarriff which raced outside her. Get Smart Max (gate four) after beginning best to lead then trailing the winner was third 1.8 metres back. The rate 2-05.1.

Snared quinella

■ Melton raced on Tuesday and Wildwood trainer Serge Lenardi would have been "over the moon" after snaring the quinella in the Nevele R Stud Pace over 2240 metres when Trembita defeated Bronski Royal with a half head separating the pair.

Driven by Greg Sugars, Trembita starting from gate two on the second line enjoyed a soft trip trailing Bronski Royal (one/one) who eased three wide on the home turn.

Making the final bend four wide, Trembita ran home best to blouse Bronski Royal which rallied inside him to just fail. Roughie Walmara after racing exposed dashed away on the home turn to go down narrowly 1.3 metres away. The mile rate 2-00.7. A 5Y0 daughter of Major Bronski and Twinkletoes, Trembita notched up her third success in 36 outings.

■ Romsey's Chris Svanosio in a wonderful training effort landed the 2240 metre Garrard's Horse & Hound Trotters Mobile with 5Y0 Muscle Hill-Cinders gelding Dontouch The Duco who was having his first outing since February 2020.

Settling four back along the markers from gate two on the second line, Dontouch The Duco never went round a runner, flashing home from a long way back along the sprint lane on straightening to record a neck margin over Flaming Fives which kicked clear in the straight appearing to have the race in her keeping. Gatesys Gift which raced exposed from the bell was third 3.1 metres away. The mile rate 2-02.6.

■ Wednesday was double day with Hamilton racing in the afternoon and Swan Hill at night.

At Hamilton, Mount Gambier trainer William Drury's 5Y0 Shadow Play-Magical Sue gelding Your Not With Me never placed in 15 outings, took his rivals to the cleaners when victorious in the Hamilton Laundry and Dry Cleaners Pace over 2160 metres.

Driven by Burrumbeet reinsman Michael Stanley, Your Not With Me led from gate two, but was given no peace by Jackie Barker aboard The Suspect as the pair cleared right away from their rivals with neither giving an inch.

Still in front on turning, Your Not With Me at tote odds of $66.90 defied all challengers to register a half neck margin from Missy Deyo (one/ two - three wide last lap), with Nevada Yankee third a half neck away off a three wide trail in the final circuit. The mile rate 2-00.3.

First starter Heza Son Of Agun (three back the markers) was third 6.2 metres back.

■ Birchip owner/trainer Gary Living destroyed most punters quaddie hopes after 5Y0 Art Major-Stylish Jasper mare Stylish Gem greeted the judge in the Cervus Equipment Pace over 2160 metres, returning a mile rate of 1-59.

Given a cosy passage from the pole by Emma Hamblin following the favourite Revitalise next door, Stylish Gem using the sprint lane gained a last stride decision by a half head over Revitalise, with Sporty Azz (one/two - three wide last lap) third a head away.

■ Some of the best Three year old pacers around were at Kilmore last Friday to contest second round heats of the rich APG series for both Colts and Geldings and Fillies over 1690 metres.

Champion Captaintreacherous-Beninjurd filly Tough Tilly easily took care of her rivals in the Fillies heat. Trained by Emma Stewart and driven by Kate Gath, Tough Tilly began very fast from outside the front line to lead throughout, scoring unextended by 14.5 metres from Soho Broadway which trailed, with Joanna third a neck away after racing in the open. The first of two Colts and Geldings heats saw Melton trainer John Nicholson's exciting Bettors Delight-Alta Calypso gelding Sebs Choice outstay his rivals after racing parked to defeat Act Now (one/two - three wide last lap) by a nose in a thrilling finish returning a mile rate of 1-54.9. Soho Bollinger which led was a neck away third.

The second heat went to the Emma Stewart trained and Kate Gath driven Ideal Dan, a American Ideal-Jodila colt in 1-56.8. Enjoying a sweet passage from gate two trailing the pacemaker and poleline favourite Narutac Prince, Ideal Dan used the sprint lane to prevail by 1.1 metres from the roughie Bettor Isolate from the tail which flashed home in the straight. Theatre Extra Meow Meow

■ The intro to the singing sensation, the diva that is Meow Meow, set the scene: “From the backrooms of Berlin, the tar pits of Johannesburg, the opium dens of Shanghai, the vagaries of Vegas, the speakeasys of New York City”.

What followed was hilarious and dazzling.

Costume changes—feathers, sequins, a ridiculously long train—and sight gags abound.

Between the jokes, Meow Meow delivered glittering renditions of classics such as Jacques Brel’s Ne Me Quitte Pas, French chanteuse Barbara’s Parce Que Je T'Aime and Piazzolla’s Rinasceró.

Unsuspecting but game audience members are cajoled onto the stage and instructed to stroke from knee to ankle: “Fully consenting ladies and gentlemen.”

Meow Meow then thrills with Spoliansky’s delectable Ich bin ein Vamp commanding the luckless but gallant audience members to ‘get me into a swastika by the end of the song’.

“Usually Melbourne, people throw flowers at this point.”

She sulks offstage, muttering “Do I have to do everything myself?’ returning with bunches of flowers, distributing them to the hapless audience members in the front row.

“Timing is everything” she deadpans. All at once, she stops the orchestra and calls for the trapeze: “What! No trapeze?”

Instead, she launches herself at the audience, and crowd surfs through the next number. Through all the laughter, we witness her amazing artistry accompanied by the wonderful MSO conducted by Ben Northey.

Act Two sees a fabulous delivery of Brecht and Weil’s Surabaya Johnny. While Brecht and Weil may be the sound of Weimar Germany, Meow Meow—self-confessed ‘post-postmodernist’—yanks us into the 21stcentury with renditions of Patty Griffin’s Be Careful, Amanda Palmer’s Missed Me, and Radiohead’s Fake Plastic Trees.

And, from the sublime to the ridiculous, Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini in French, Mandarin and an outlandish avant-garde. Presented at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne.
