SALUTE TO STUART

■ Observer columnist Mike McColl Jones has paid a lovingtribute to entertainer Stuart Wagstaff, at a memorial service held at the Theatre Royal, Sydney. Wagstaff, 90, died after a long illness. McColl Jones, a close friend for decades, read a ‘Fax From Heaven’, in the same way that he did at the service for Australian television ‘king’Graham Kennedy. “A couple of weeks before dear Stuart passed away, he was honoured by Variety Australia - he was named as one the 100 ‘Variety Entertainers of The Century’. “He replaced a Mr R. Harris of London. “Variety's Chief Barker Paul Mullaly said: "It was really a good fit as Stuart came in as 102 on the original list.” I sent this information on to Stuart, and received the following reply on the Friday before he left us….. "Dear Mike - Thank you for all that. I would be grateful if you could satisfy my curiosity - Who the F was 101?". “Today is almost 10 years since

Stuart hosted the memorial service for one of his close friends Graham Kennedy. The same day - the 31st. “I was honoured to speak on that occasion as I am honoured to speak here today. “Like Graham, Stuart loved sending and receiving faxes and emails, and this morning, as I'd hoped.. a fax arrived for me from Stuart, from heaven. I'd like to read it to you. “Dear Mike, A great flight up here. I managed to pick up a book at the terminal to pass the time. It's a new one: The sex life of a standup comedian - 50 Shades of Ugly Dave Gray. “As we flew over the harbour I saw Luna Park. I thought … it must be the only thing in Australia that has a bigger mouth than Clive Palmer. “When I arrived I was met by Graham. Already he's got me a gig ….I start next week on Blankety Blanks. Graham took me to the ‘Cloud Club’ and introduced me to a lot of interesting people. Johnny Meillon is still behind the bar. He was serv-

ing drinks to Desmond Tutu and Vivian Leigh. I had to leave before he told me about the actress and the bishop. “I bumped into a recent arrival, Malcolm Fraser. He told me he was really embarrassed when he arrived at the Pearly Gates ... he'd left his pants behind. “I was introduced to Sir Walter Raleigh - and I thanked him for inventing tobacco. “By the way, tell Russell Crowe I met Noah. He said he thought Russell played him very well. Noah whispered to me "The weather bureau can't get it bloody right up here either!" “I had a drink with Lawrence Oliver. He's currently playing in Richard III. I didn't have the heart to tell him I used to call him that! “I met Adam ….you'll never guess what he does up here? He runs the local Apple store. “Graham introduced me to God. I said he could call me Stuart. “I thanked God for the beautiful house he'd given me. Sandstone with a white picket fence. It even has it's name in gold lettering …’The Waggery’.

“He's provided me with my own gardener. Benson is his name ... he's going to trim my Hedges. “Do you know something … I'm starting to become a believer. My diary is filling up very well. I start in Fair Lady next week …I'm replacing Rex Harrison. “I'll bet Kamahl is there at the Theatre Royal ... he really loves a funeral. I reckon the only one he's missed in recent times was Bin Laden's. “Anyway, God told me to pass on a message to Kamahl: "Kamahl, you're going to live for a very long time !" God is errified he might come up here and want to sing with the choir. Dear Stuart ... much love from me, my family who adored you, former players and members of the Hawthorn Football club ... and so many Australians who were delighted by your loveliness and wicked sense of humour. “PS: If anyone would like to contact me, write c/o Sydney University, Anatomy Department. Shelf 37. Jar 463.”

From the moment you step on to your private limestone encased timber deck area, your luxury tent warmly welcomes you inside with soft cow hides on the floor, original artwork on the walls, serene lighting, faux fur throws and a sumptuous five star pillow topped bed. The four Luxury Eco Tents are nestled under a large canopy of majestic trees and are each connected to the other areas of the resort by expanses of raised timber walkways which meander gently though the established gardens.

From small cocktail soirees poolside to formal dinners under the majestic canopy of trees, The Billi Resort has a number of areas specially designed for group events and weddings. There is a large area of decking that envelops the resort pool which illuminates an iridescent blue with its cascading water feature as a backdrop. This is the perfect place for intimate gatherings and cocktail drinks. For larger events and a more formal Marquee wedding – we have a rectangular area of grass which can comfortably fit a marquee. It sits adjacent to the pool providing a stunning outlook and different areas for a progressive event. However by far and large the most popular spot is under the stunning canopy of trees which has a large area of synthetic grass (which always looks perfect) on which to paint your picture. There is a raised “stage area” which can accommodate entertainment and speeches. The area is fringed by evergreen Frangipanis and has a built in bar area for the serving of drinks. We are more than happy to assist with any aspects of your event planning.

Portside Links, King Island

King Island - A Portside Experience Only 4-star rated accommodation on the island Ken and Marilyn Chapman first came to King Island as tourists and immediately fell in love with the atmosphere, landscape and friendly island community. They decided to sell their home in Mt Evelyn, Victoria, in 2002 and relocate to the township of Grassy, King Island, where they built their beautiful home from scratch on the old disused golf course overlooking Bass Strait. Ken did much of the hard labour on the house, while Marilyn applied her interior design skills to the internal fittings. As one of the island’s many artists, Marilyn has also designed each of the beautifully appointed apartments herself, ensuring only the highest quality furnishings and touches. More recently, the couple has built a gallery next to the main residence, showcasing the best of local artists and crafts, which guests are welcome to peruse. Portside Links takes pride in offering its guests the ultimate in modern comforts and facilities in a relaxed rural setting. The two spacious and luxurious one-bedroom apartments have been designed to create a private retreat for couples, singles, or small families. The two apartments are separated by an enclosed carport to ensure sufficient privacy, and each apartment comes with its own barbecue facilities. The real beauty of the accommodation, however, is the breath-taking views of Grassy Harbour and ‘Sand Blow’ beach. Enjoy the solitude and beauty of the beach at first light, or

Auldington Hotel offers true boutique accommodation in the ccentr entr asmania. entree of Launc Launcee sstt on, T Tasmania. What was once Presentation Sister’s Convent, established in 1899, has now been converted into a luxurious, welcoming and peaceful 4.5 star, AAA rated hotel. Operations of the convent ceased in 2003, with only 2 nuns, both aged in their nineties, left to manage the three story building. It was a huge task to say the least! In the early 2000s, both ladies were moved on by the Catholic Church to something more practical. Surprisingly, and somewhat unusually, the Catholic Church auctioned off the property. The property was purchased by local couple Mr and Mrs Bowman, who quickly set about renovating the interior to convert the building into a hotel. Retaining its striking heritage architecture, its wonderful central staircase and numerous historic features, the spaces within its walls were tastefully refurbished to create modern, luxurious rooms, all with private ensuite bathrooms. Once renovations were complete, the opening of the 18room Auldington Hotel on 26th December 2005 marked a new era for this beautiful heritage building. Changing hands again in 2014, new owner James Marshall is passionate about his guest’s comfort and continuing the tradition of offering a truly unique and satisfying accommodation experience in Launceston, Tasmania.
