Regional Round-Up Resilience Project

■ Mansfield Council has partnered with Murray Primary Health Network and the Resilience Project to deliver a program to improve mental health resilience and wellbeing.

The program will begin on Tuesday (Mar. 15) and take place throughout 2022 in schools across the Mansfield Shire.

The Resilience Project School Program supports mental health in the classroom and in the family home. It builds skill in teachers, students and parents, using a whole-of-community approach to improving mental health outcomes for the Mansfield Shire community.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said this project met a real need for young people in Mansfield Shire.

“We’re pleased to help deliver a tried-andtrue program that teaches practical strategies to help students improve their mental health resilience,” said Cr Tehan.

“Young people have been hit hard in recent years and many students in our Shire are doing it tough. This program responds directly to research highlighting the need for increased mental health preventions and will have long term benefits for our community.”

In addition to the school program for students and teachers, a free parent and community online presentation offers practical strategies to improve mental health and foster wellbeing in the family home.

$3.5 mil. for W’sea

■ The City of Whittlesea has welcomed an injection of funding from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund grants program to build and upgrade critical local infrastructure.

The $3.5 million Victorian Government investment will help Whittlesea Council deliver more than $15 million worth of initiatives to support local communities, tradespeople, and businesses.

The projects supported as part of the 202122 Growing Suburbs Fund program include a new multipurpose community centre in Donnybrook’s Olivine estate, updated walking and cycling access at Huskisson Recreation Reserve in Lalor, and the Community Energy Transition Program, which will provide solar and battery storage systems to community groups and sporting clubs.

The funding will also contribute to streetscape improvements at the Gorge Road shopping precinct in South Morang, ceiling and ventilation upgrades at Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre, and a community-driven project to regenerate the natural vegetation at Worchester Park in Bundoora.

Last summer splash

■ With the arrival of Autumn, Strathbogie Shire Council’s summer outdoor pool season will soon end - but there is a final pool party for youth in the popular Summer Splash Series.

Avenel, Euroa and Violet Town pools will close at the end of the Labour Day public holiday on Monday, March 14, and the Summer Splash youth event will be at the Violet Town Pool on Saturday, March 12.

The Violet Town event will feature live music by Bad Ibis, YNOT and Inversion, Circus Caberet, art activities, games, delicious food – and swimming.

Operating hours at Avenel, Euroa and Violet Town pools until the 2021-22 season ends are as follows: Weekdays: 12 Noon to 6pm (until Monday, March 14). Lovell seeks recovery funds ■ Wendy Lovell, Northern Victorian MLC, has slammed the Andrews Labor Government’s lack of financial support for local councils affected by last year’s windstorms.

Speaking during the adjournment debate in State Parliament, Ms Lovell said that more than eight months after the storms ravaged outer suburbs, Yarra Ranges Council needed urgent State Government funding to continue the recovery process.

Some 71 homes in the Yarra Ranges local government area were destroyed by the event, and another 60 homes damaged by winds that exceeded speeds of 120kmh.

A total of 32,000 residents lost power for more than a week and 3000 homes were without power and internet for more than a month.

The comments were directed to Jaclyn Symes, Minister for Emergency Services. Ms Lovell pointed out that the State Government’s initial recovery funding to the shire was completely inadequate.

Ms Lovell met last month with Yarra Ranges Councillors and officers who emphasised the need for more funding to complete a comprehensive recovery plan including implementing wellbeing initiatives and clearing the estimated 2000 trees that remain felled on provide land.

● Wendy Lovell MLC Ms Lovell said the clearly inadequate recovery funding agreement between the State Government and Yarra Ranges Council expires soon.

She called on Ms Symes to provide the appropriate amount of funding need to the recovery throughout the shire, more than eight months after this devastating natural event.

“Labor’s initial recovery funding to Yarra Ranges Council was woefully inadequate, proven by the fact that many communities throughout the LGA are still suffering the effects of last year’s windstorm event.

“Every approach by the Council to the State Government for financial assistance has been declined and I urge the Minister to immediately provide more funding so Yarra Ranges can complete the recovery urgent required by many communities throughout the shire,” Ms Lovell said.

Nillumbik controls dumping ■ Nillumbik will be only the second council in Victoria with the powers to regulate clean fill dumping on Green Wedge land, after having succeeded to have its proposed planning scheme amendment to manage this issue approved by Victoria’s Minister for Planning.

The Council was notified last week that the Minister had approved Amendment C131nill with no changes.

The approval means that earthworks which involve the receipt, importation, stockpiling or placement of more than 100 cubic metres of fill on land zoned Green Wedge or Rural Conservation will require a planning permit.

The decision will address a significant gap which saw no single provision in Victorian Planning Schemes to regulate the deposit of clean fill on land, particularly in the peri-urban areas of Melbourne.

● Cr Frances Eyre, Nillumbik Mayor Large-scale dumping of clean fill had been an ongoing issue in Nillumbik Shire, as seen in Chapel Lane, Doreen.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Frances Eyre welcomed the approval, saying it was a great result for the community.

“This amendment is a win

for our community and is the result of extensive work by Council - including through strong advocacy - in close consultation with our community,” she said.

“This issue had been a source of ongoing concern and frustration for Council and our community – as indeed it has been in other peri-urban councils – and we’re very pleased therefore that this collective effort has resulted in this great outcome.”

Deputy Mayor Cr Ben Ramcharan said this amendment was critical to ensure protection of the Green Wedge.

“Council listened to the community’s concerns and took a stand to protect what our community values most. The amendment will give Council greater powers to regulate large-scale soil dumping in our beloved the Green Wedge,” he said.

Find Yourself Outside ■ Murrindindi Shire Council has launched its ‘Find Yourself Outside’ project, with a number of exciting initiatives and activities planned to encourage locals and visitors to experience outdoor dining, events and unique experiences within the Shire.

The project will enable the activation of public outdoor settings in a COVIDSafe way, with the aim of supporting local business recovery, community safety and visitor confidence.

Tourism, Events and Business Support Portfolio Councillor Ilona Gerencser said Murrindindi Council has received funding support from the Victorian Government’s COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Fund 2021 to deliver this project.

“To encourage you to ‘find yourself outside’, Council will deliver some unique outdoor events and entertainment – like our free ‘pop up cinema’ screenings. These are fantastic events for the whole family,” said Cr Gerencser.

“We’ll also support local businesses and industries by upgrading current public outdoor infrastructure to bolster future use and by installing new infrastructure.

“Over the coming months, Council will be delivering a range of initiatives through this project – so, stay tuned.”

Ranges roads boost

■ Yarra Ranges Council is continuing its work to seal 180km of community roads in partnership with landowners and the Federal Government, as part of its Roads for the Community Initiative.

The initiative, which runs until 2028, will result in 50 years’ worth of roadworks completed in nine years, thanks to $150 million in Federal Government funding.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Jim Child, said that 22 roads had been sealed to date, with 6km of road projects under construction.

“We’ve had fantastic progress and feedback over the first two years of Roads for the Community, where we prioritised roads around community infrastructure – such as schools and preschools – and started working on residential roads,” Cr Child said.

“The funding we’re receiving from the Federal Government increases as the project continues, so things are starting to accelerate quickly.

Portraits at W’sea

■ A series of 24 captivating community portraits by talented artist Ron Driscoll will be on display to the public at the Whittlesea Council Offices from Thursday (Mar. 10), as part of a new art exhibition, Face to Face.

City of Whittlesea residents of various ages, cultural backgrounds and abilities were painted to reflect the strength of diversity in our community.

Commissioned by Council, these portraits will eventually grace the walls of the Council Chambers at the City of Whittlesea Civic Centre.

The Face to Face Art Exhibition is open weekdays, 10am - 4pm until March 21 and is located at the Great Hall, Council Offices, 25 Ferres Boulevard, South Morang. Admission is free. No bookings are required.

“The reason for the invite was that many scouts from Murrindindi were attending.

When I got there I was wowed by the some 3000 scouts already there, and was told it would swell to over 7000 when the older and younger groups arrived. The facilities were amazing as were the lines of hundreds of tents and the myriad of events that the scouts could attend each day.”

“With a general election pending, the Speaker has decided that writs will not be issued and a by-election will not be held for the federal division of Spence,” said a spokesman.

$1.43 for Labor

■ A TAB media release says “the odds of an election victory for Scott Morrison have been trimmed amid global instability”.

The Coalition’s price with TAB has firmed from $3.10 a fortnight ago to $2.90 with money continuing to come for them.

“The trend comes in spite of a Newspoll showing Anthony Albanese’s ALP continues to hold a lead of 55/45 on a two-party preferred basis, and the Opposition Leader continues to erode Mr Morrison’s lead as preferred Prime Minister. The poll saw voter satisfaction with both leaders climb slightly.

“Labor remains a firm favourite at $1.43 with TAB, having drifted out from $1.40 in the past fortnight.

“TAB’s markets suggest a close contest with the incumbent party favourite in all bar one of these seats – the Sydney electorate of Reid where TAB has the ALP $1.90, the Coalition $2.25 and independent Natalie Baini at $4.25.

TAB’s Gerard Daffy said: “In recent times, global instability has tended to favour conservative incumbents in Australian federal politics - think Howard in 2001 following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US - and there are punters that clearly believe history will repeat. Council News Groups acknowledged

■ Cr Sandice McAulay has cknowledged the many groups and organisations who continue to provide assistance to the community.

“Of particular note this month the Emergency Management Team have been recognising the tireless work of the Red Cross,” Cr McAulay told the latest Murrindindi Shire Council meeting.

“The EMT team continue to monitor and engage with agencies on COVID-19 – trying to ensure that partner agencies have access to PPE and advocating on other resource needs such as Rapid Tests for both the agencies and community members by raising with Regional and State Committees as required.

“Of course Council is still actively advocating to State and Federal Government for improved connectivity and internet services.

“The Federal Government promised us all fair and equitable access to the internet, regardless of where we live. That is simply not happening. There is no equality.

“With many people choosing Murrindindi Shire for a tree-change, now is the time to resolve the issues to enable our communities to grow and develop.

“Our safety and prosperity relies on it. As a response to a number of instances during this last holiday break Council is investigating options to better manage charcoal fires around the municipality and benchmarking with solutions in other municipalities,” Cr McAulay said.

DRUG LAB PROBE AT MERNDA

■ Detectives from the Clandestine Laboratory Squad are appealing for public information in relation to a possible drug lab at a Mernda property.

A warrant was executed at the Breadalbane Ave address after evidence was reviewed from a previous warrant at the same address in December last year.

Investigators removed a number of items left at the property which are suspected of being used in the manufacture of illicit drugs, as well as other items which will be further forensically analysed in an effort to obtain further information.

It is believed the house has been unoccupied since early November last year.

The property was located in a state of disrepair and there was rubbish lying around which was believed to contain harmful substances including chemicals and drug waste product.

These items had the potential to cause harm to anyone who came into contact with them and wasn’t wearing the appropriate protective equipment.

The property has been assessed for contamination and through the Environmental Health Officer and Occupational Hygienist, will make recommendations to the owner.

■ Yea resident Camille McLean still has no answers after a hit-run incident in High St earlier this year.

Camille says a speeding vehicle, possibly a Hyundai SUV, knocked her over as she was crossing the busy road, near Foodworks and the Country Club Hotel.

Witnesses were unable to get the registration number of the vehicle as it drove off east. Meanwhile, Camille by taken to Maroondah Hospital for an overnight stay, as she recovered neck and head injuries, as well as bruising.

Camille is grateful for the care by people who saw the hit-run, and the staff of the Country Club Hotel who assisted her. She says Yea Police continue their investigation.

■ Murrindindi Shire Deputy Mayor Cr Damien Gallagher has reported on a busy start to the year.

“Since last Council convened, I’ve been fortunate to venture to all corners of Murrindindi Shire: To local markets, a citizenship ceremony in Kinglake, the unveiling of Gurrong dhrrang (Scar Tree) artwork in Yea, an indigenous flag-raising ceremony on the eve of Australia Day in Flowerdale, and the Toolangi Local History Exhibition.

“All the while, Alexandra has hosted a summer of community attractions. As always, the season commenced with the Christmas Carols Carnival in Rotary Park.

That evening the community gathered to contemplate the sun setting on 2021. Those present also reverently reflected upon the tragic pre-Christmas loss of a group of young Tasmanians.

“Thank you again to our Mayor, Cr Carpenter for conveying Council’s condolences and our community’s deepest sympathies to Devonport City’s Mayor Rockliff.

“At the Alexandra Community Christmas Tree Festival, community groups, businesses, social groups, and local government alike proudly exhibited the best of Alexandra, and as has been the trend in recent years, the best of the wider Murrindindi Shire region.

Local Briefs Hit-run in Yea

■ Yea man Mick Wearne retired after 44 years as a professional firefighter. He has served 54 years as a volunteer at Yea CFA, and will continue that service.

His retirement on Saturday (Mar. 5) was marked with him showing past uniforms that he was worn over the past five decades.

Epping intercept

■ An off-duty Protective Services Officer has been detected allegedly driving while disqualified.

The 22-year-old male PSO, from Transit and Public Safety Command, was intercepted on Hoddle St, Clifton Hill on September 7 last year.

He was intercepted again on Guila Court, Epping on November 13.

He has been charged with two counts of drive while disqualified.

He will appear at court at a later date.

■ Police are investigating a fatal crash in Kinglake.

It is believed a vehicle was travelling east along Weber Rd when it careered over a crest and crashed into a tree on Monday last week (Feb. 28) around 11.39am.

The driver, a 28-year-old Kinglake woman, was taken to hospital and later died.

Exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and Police are investigating if speed was a factor.

■ Murrindindi Shire Mayor Cr Sue Carpenter has spoken about the region’s recovery from COVID: “While covid restrictions are slowly easing, I would like to recognise the efforts of our customer service and library teams across our four branches, who continue to offer great service while managing restrictions, including QR code check in and vaccination checks for non-essential services – and do so in their friendly and efficient way.

“We appreciate the public’s patience with our team’s enforcement of the restriction and with teams at businesses around the Shire which are still required to implement the Victorian Government’s restrictions “As restrictions ease further, we’d encourage our community members to get back into the library. Our Library programs are off and running for the new year. Where was Higginbotham township?

■ Dicussion about the probable location of the Higginbotham township has long been carried out by the residents of Murrindindi.

An article in the Australian National Placenames Survey newsletter suggests three possible locations, some distance from the George Higginbotham Mine, near the Murrindindi River.

Nigel Sinnott, with Clem Earp, published these comments in June 2006: “When researching a book about placenames in the upper Goulburn River area of northeast central Victoria (published as PlaceNames of the Alexandra, Lake Eildon and Big River Area of Victoria, Alexandra: Friends of the Library, 2003), one of the sources I consulted was James Flett’s (Melbourne, 1970).

“On page 116 I came across the following paragraph: ‘Early in 1866 rich reefs were discovered at what was originally called New Chum, up the Murrundindi River about 10 miles from Yea, and there was a rush prospected by McLeish and party in 1868.

‘In 1869 the mining village, where there was a club and a theatre, changed its name to Higginbotham, after a reefer named George Higginbotham.’

“The McLeish family is mentioned several times in The Story of Yea (1973, 2001) by Harvey Blanks, and there was a single reference to the Higginbotham Prospecting and Gold Mining Company, of which John Wishart Cairns was a director, but there was no mention of the village.

“I therefore consulted Les Blake’s Place Names of Victoria.

(Adelaide, 1977; microfiche edn, Hampton, Vic, 1987), where I found the following entry: “Higginbotham: Former goldfield settlement by Murrindindi Ri., 16 km fr. Yea, 1869; named after digger George Higginbotham; fr. 1866 when gold first found there, called New Chum.

“Now I was aware that Place Names of Victoria could very often be unreliable, but on this occasion Blake had apparently taken all his information from Flett, and Flett had given three references for what he had written: ■ Mining Registrars’ Reports (quarterly) for March 1866, (p. 47), September 1868 and March 1869.

“The adjoining claim has been christened the “James Macpherson Grant,” and No. 3 North is named the “Constitutionalist,” to represent the opposition party.’

“Grant (1822-85) was the radical member of parliament after whom Grant Street, Alexandra, was named, and he had a staunch ally in chief justice and attorney general George Higinbotham (1826-92), champion of land reform, smallholders, working people and votes for women.

“Had Flett perhaps made a note about the George Higinbotham Reef and later misread the last word as ‘reefer’?

“A letter in the Alexandra Times of July 17, 1868, published the name for the first time and proudly declared ‘You will perceive we are Loyal Liberals’.

“This was the political party of Higinbotham and Grant.

“The letter enabled Clem Earp to track down a petition in the Public Records Office (PROV VPRS 242/ P0, Unit 1, 1868/R8844) that clarifies the naming of the settlement: Murrindindi Creek, Yea. To the Honorable The Commissioner of Lands Sir, At a meeting held by the residents of this place here this 9th day of July 1868, the following resolution was passed viz.

‘Resolved that the Chairman of this meeting be requested to forward to the proper Department of the Government his our petition praying, that the name of the Township forming here, be called Higinbotham’.

‘Requesting an early answer on behalf of the meeting I beg to remain Your Humble & obedient Servant Eli Taylor Cockburn Chairman of the Meeting “It is now fairly clear that the settlement was never called New Chum, but what and where was New Chum (Creek), as distinct from a locality and watercourse with the same name (flourished 1864) about thirty kilometres south (as the crow flies) at Healesville West?

“References such as ‘the junction on Newchum and Muddy Creeks’ (Mining Surveyors’ Reports, Jan. 1860), ‘Murrendendie [sic] or New Chum Creek, near Yea’ (Mining Registrars’ Reports, March 31, 1866) and ‘at New-chum Creek and Murrindindi Creek’ ( , March 1870) make it very uncertain whether New Chum Creek was the watercourse or gully flowing past the Higinbotham Mine into the Murrindindi River (formerly Creek) or simply an alternative name for the Murrindindi River itself, a tributary of the Yea River (formerly Muddy Creek).

“Clem Earp has commented: ‘Looking over the various references to New Chum, it appears to me that few actually refer to New Chum Creek, most just say New Chum, leading me to suspect that the Murrindindi River has been carelessly attributed with the name of the

prospecting claim’ (letter, Dec. 20, 2005).

“Old references to the distance of Higinbotham settlement from the town of Yea give 9, 10 and 12 miles, so in today’s measurements we have a range of about 14.5 to 19.5 kilometres.

“So where was the village? The most likely site, given what is known so far, is where the creek or gully from the Higinbotham Mine joins the Murrindindi River.

“This is about 14 kilometres by today’s roads from Yea. “Another possibility would be a little further up the Murrindindi River, at either the original or new site of the old Murrindindi Hall, roughly 17.5 kilometres by road from Yea. “Least likely, because of the distance from Yea (23.5 km), but no less intriguing, is an area marked on a map of May 9, 1868, for the proposed Alexandra-Whittlesea road (Department of Land Information Historical Maps, New Roads 431, microfiche) as a township reserve in the parish of Woodbourne at the confluence of Murrindindi Creek (River) and Ault Beag Creek. “(The second name is Gaelic, but has been corrupted on recent maps to Ault Beeac Creek.).

“The location is known today as Myles Bridge, about a kilometre east of the straggling settlement of Woodbourne.

“Searches kindly undertaken by Judith Scurfield (Map Room, State Library of Victoria) and Clem Earp have revealed no map of the shortlived settlement of Higinbotham.

“It may never have been surveyed. We can, however, be reasonably certain that the place was not named after a miner called George ‘Higginbotham’.”

1868 report offers clues

■ On November 24, 1868, The Alexandra Times published this report “From Our Own Correspodent’ about HIgginbotham: “Since my last letter, a considerable portion of our population has started off for Spring Creek (the new rush), still matters are assuming a permanent and settled state.

“The first crushing from the Higinbotham reef gave 4 oz to the ton. There is a large body of stone and every prospect of this reef turning out one of the best in the district.

Simmons aces 18th

■ Wednesday’s highlight at Yea Golf Club was the hole in one by Brian Simmons in the Irish Stableford competition on the 18th hole.

The ace enabled Brian (10) and Bob Glenister (10) to win the event with 58 points.

Second pairing were Martin Lowe (17) and Brian with 57 points.

Irish Stableford sees each pair play their better score on the front nine while on the back nine both scores count. Third place pairing of Steve Rumney (24) and Jonathan Fisher (15) finished with 55 points.

Individual winner was Peter Johnson (16) with 37 from Jonathan Fisher and Bob Glenister both on 36. There were 15 men participating.

NTP on the 2nd was Michael Spagnolo and the lucky Club Award $10 went to Norm McCallum and Mick Sheather.

- Alan Pell ★ Girls Season 2022 Officially Open Last Wednesday (Mar. 2) was the beginning of a new season and with much excitement. Even before getting into the girls news we must congratulate Brian Simmons for his spectacular hole in one on the 18th. Glad he didn’t do that in the Gender challenge. Congratulations, top effort.

Opening Day. Apart from the little bit of rain there was nothing to dampen the spirits. It was wonderful to see a few new faces who are willing to become potentially new members and some previous existing faces returning after a little break or perhaps a little longer break enjoying being back.

Our Captain was on a mission to welcome all, and not wishing anyone to leave the day without signing up.

Our Life Member and previous Captain Miranda Gill hit the first ball for the aeason.

Nine holes Ambrose was the game for the day. Lots of laughter, hits and giggles.

Only to be topped by returning to the Club Rooms for a few drinks and a lovely lunch provided by the members. As usual plenty for all.

We have some great cooks amongst the members.

Not only did we have our daily competition we also had the end of year presentations for the Birdies, Gobblers (getting the ball into the hole off the green no putting required) and the Eclectic 2021.

Miranda Gill was on a roll for the day. Both Miranda and her partner for the day Judy Newman won the day’s event and then Miranda went onto to win not only the Gobbler Competition having had 12 for the year but also the Eclectic. Both Scratch 67 and the Handicap 59.

Another great accomplishment for her.Congratulations Miranda.

Also congratulations to our birdie winner Adrianne Anglin having had eight for the year.

Well done girls now it is on to see how many can be achieved this year.

- Karen Sangster ★ Rick Wills wins Yea Gof Club received constant rain on Friday night and it was decided that the Barry Moore Trophy would be postponed due to impending weather.

As it does in Yea there was no further rain and with preferred lies over 20 golfers played a stableford round anyway.

Best score was recorded by Rick Wills (8) with 40 points. Second was Tony Rule (22) on CB from Brendan Chenhall (11) with 38. Fourth with 37 was Michael Sheather (32) from Bill Dredge (19) fifth with 35.

Local People Rebels latest

■ Last Friday’s Men’s Health Information evening was well attended with guests appreciative of information given by several speakers and enjoying the hospitality organized by Pam Thompson who did a great job to put together an important community event.

Last Saturday (Mar. 5) the Alexabndra Football Netball Club hosted Whitehorse Pioneers for football practice matches at Rebel Park.

On Sunday (Mar. 6) the Club hosted Woori Yallock and Hurstbridge for football practice matches at Rebel Park.

All went well and thank you to all our volunteers for making the weekend run smoothly.

On Saturday, March 26, the Club is hosting another club for football practice matches at Rebel Park, times to be confirmed. Free entry with canteen and bar facilities available.

The Outer East season for senior football and netball commences the following week on Saturday, April 2, when the Rebels travel to Warburton Millgrove.

The Seymour District Junior Football Netball League is due to commence on Sunday, April 24.

Junior football training is as follows: ■ under 15s Tuesday and Thursdays at 4.30pm starting March 8- under 13s Tuesdays and Thursday at 4.30 pm starting March 8 - under 11s and under 9s Friday nights at 4.30pm commencing March 25.

■ Junior netball training is as follows: • under 15s Fridays at 5.15 pm, already commenced • under 13s Thursdays at 4.45pm to 6pm, already commenced • under 11s to be confirmed The Alexandra Football Netball Club is looking forward to a full season of local community sport and is pleased to announce the appointment of our junior coaches for season 2022 – football under 15 Daniel Crane and Brad Howell, under 13 Rebecca Clark, under 11 Cameron Gysberts and under 9 Sam Kidd with netball under 15 Penny Van Lierop, under 13 Emma Kidd and Kelly Golland, under 11 Phoebe Parker.

The Club is looking to create a Junior Committee to help with the running of Sunday home games, fundraising and the development of all our kids, the Committee consisting of a parent from each of the football and netball teams.

Men’s Shed boost

■ The Hurstbridge Men’s Shed is set to get a permanent home of its own with the Victorian Government and Nillumbik Shire Council to jointly fund the construction of a new workshop and meeting place.

Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green announced that Nillumbik Shire Council would receive a $364,000 grant through the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund to complete the project. Council will contribute $300,000.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Frances Eyre and Bunjil Ward Councillor Karen Egan met with Danielle Green, McEwen MHR Rob Mitchell, and members of the Hurstbridge Men’s Shed on site at their latest project, the Edible Hub garden at the Hurstbridge Community Hub, to discuss the plans.

Mr Mitchell, who is co-chair of the Federal Parliamentary Friends of Men’s Shed group, also presented the Men’s Shed members with a cheque for $3100 to help fund a barbecue and tandem trailer.

The new Men’s Shed will be built at 4 Hurstbridge-Arthurs Creek Rd, near Araluen, Allwood House and the Hurstbridge Tennis Courts. Preliminary designs have been completed and construction is expected to start in early 2023.

Broadford: original colours were red and blue ■ There are local history references to the Broadford Football Club having its origins, 130 years ago, in 1890.

The Broadford Football Club was certainly mentioned in the following year (March 28, 1891) in the columns of the Broadford Courier newspaper.

“A meeting of the members of the Broadford Football Club was hed on Wednesday evening at Bidstrup's Hotel, for the purpose of deciding what steps should be taken to clear the Recreation ground.

“Mr. P. Bidstrup was voted to the chair, and together with Mr. N. McDougall was deputed to wait on the Shire Secretary with reference to the matter.

“No other business was transacted and the meeting adjourned till this day fortnight.”

The April 18, 1891, issue reported: “A meeting of 'the Broadford Football Club took place at Bidstrup's hotel, on Saturday evening last.

“There was a numerous attendance, Dr. Skinner being in the chair.

Oficers were appointed as follow:President, Mr. McDougall; vicepresidents, Dr. Skinner, and Messrs.

P. Bidstrup, J. S, Brown, M. K. McKenzie, C. Lloyd, and T. Hunt; treasurer, Mr. Howdon; secretary, Mr. Craig; general committee, Messrs. Corney, D. McDougall, Simon, and Sandilands.

“The following were appointed a match committee: Dr. Skinner, and Messrs. A. McLeod, P. Bidstrup, N. Ross, and W. Craig.

“Mr. McDougall was appointed captain and Mr. J. Howden, vice captain.

“It was resolved that the colors of the club be red and blue.

“The entrance fee was fixed at 5s. The treasurer's account showed L1 6s. 7d. in hand from last year.

“In answer to a challenge from the Parkside club to play on the 24th May, it was resolved to ask them to play on the 23d May if possible.

“It was decided that members should be given the preference of picking the team, over non-members.

“Resolved that half the expense of clearing the ground be borne by the club providing that the whole amount did not exceed L4.

“It was also decided that Messrs.

J. Howden, W. Craig, and McDougall be elected on the committee for clearing the ground. Several members were enrolled during the evening.” ★ The May 16, 1891 issue of the Broadford Courier reported: “A special meeting of the Broadford Football Club was held at the Broadford hotel on Saturday evening last. “The other portion of the report dealt with the business of the Seymour meeting was recorded by us last week.

“It was also decded that Seymour be the headquarters of the Association.

Yea footy club’s history challenged ■ Evidence of local Yea football matches prior to the accepted formation date of 1893 has been discovered.

It had been generally accepted that the first meeting to form a Yea Football Club was held in 1893.

(An advertisement in The Yea Telegraph of March 27, 1890, asked those willing to form a football club to attend a meeting. “Documentary evidence confirms that nothing came of it, although a match was played against Tallarook shortly after,” notes the Tigers club webssite.)

“Locally, a competition started in 1893 after a meeting was held at the Royal Mail Hotel Yea, on Wednesday, April 18,1893 to form the Yea Football Club.

“This was four years before the formation of the Victorian Football League in 1897.”

However, an 1887 edition of the Alexandra and Yea Standard gives details of clubs in both towns, six years earlier than the 1893 formation date quoted.

“The football match played on Saturday afternoon last on the local ground, between the Yea and Alexandra clubs drew together a good concourse of patrons of the game, and had the contest been of a more even character it would have been a most interesting match to the onlookers,” reported the July 29, 1887, issue of the Standard.

“For the visitors (Yea), Messrs.

Lee and the Kelson brothers did good service, and showed to advantage many times in the game, the play of Lee being singularly good in many instances.

“Unfortunately the Yeaites have not the experience in the game of

There had been an earlier match for Yea, in the previous month.

On June 3, 1887, the Seymour Express local Yea correspondent wrote: “A football match is to be played Saturday next between the local club and a team from Alexandra. A deal of (?) is manifested in the match and wagers have been made."

The June 10 edition of the Alexandra Standard reported Yea’s first recorded game against Alexandra (see next pages).

In the pevious year, the opening round of the competition had been conducted on Good Friday, reported the Alexandra and Yea Standard on April 23, 1886.

“An unusual thing is to be presented to the public today (Good Friday). Opening match of the season. prize, a football - Alexandra v. Doon.

Later that year, Bonnie Doon wrote to the Alexandra club, noting comments made by the columnist in the Alexandra and Yea Standard.

“I cannot say much for tlhe ground, and it.is not a patch on our own. Besides several large trees there is a nasty bit of terrace near the eastern wing, which caused a deal of trouble during the play, as when the ball once got there it was a difficult mattter to get it away again, and a lot of useful time was lost.

“I should certainly advise my Yea friends to select a more fitting piece of ground.

“The Alex andra team arrived at Yea a little after 8 o'clock by rail from Molesworth, and as the match was timed to start at 2.30 p.m., there was lots of time for the visitors to view the pleasant little township and surroundings.

“It is almost needless to say that the Alexandra boys received a hearty welcome at host Davey's, who soon had a special breakfast prepared, to which ample justice was done.

“Of the match itself I must say that it was a stubbornly contested one, though inclined to be a bit rough at times.

“Then again the ground was awful greasy, and the falls were of course more frequent, and the wonder is that more hurts were not incurred besides the nasty one to Harry Asling.

“During a scrimmage in the second spell this player fell and received a severe kick over the forehead, which neceasitated his removal to the local surgery, where the hurt was skilfully attended to, but his team had to suffer his loss for the rest of the game.

“The match was played with 20 a side. Mr F. Hills acted as central umpire, and certainly did his best to give satisfaction, and where the game was so fast and rough his pretty constant demand for "ball up" was about the best decision he could give when there were tiny doubtful marks.

“Messrs J. Rose and A. Popple filled the position of goal- umpires for Yea and Alexandra respectively.

Yea having won the choice of goals, W. Dobson kicked off for the redand-black towards the township end, and the play at once became most exciting.

“For the first ten minutes the red and-blacks managed to keep the ball in close proximity to tihe sticks, and Hubbard obtained a mark at rather a difficult angle, but only a behind resulted, which was followed directly after by another from Maddeford. “ The local men at last got the

The Alexandra & Yea Standard, in its June 26 issue, reported: “A meeting of the delegates of the Alexandra and Yea District Football Association was held at Jennings' Shamrock Hotel, on Wednesday after noon last.

“The following were pre sent:Messrs: W. Buckley and G. Kent (Thornton), Redpath and Purcell (Yea), J. W. Leckie and T. A. Fox (Alexandra), and S. Carmichael and W. Payne (Yarck).

“Mr. W. Buckley was voted to the chair on the motion of Messrs.

“The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, on the motion of Messrs. Leckie and Kent.

“The matter of the difference or disagreement of reports received from Alexandra and Yea in connection with points scored at the match on June 13, was then mentioned.

“Alexandra was the first to to lodge results, which showed the match to have ended in a draw, 4.10 each; on the other hand Yea claims to have won the contest by a point.

Magazine ■ Cyd Charisse was one of the most beautiful dancers to appear on-screen in the great Hollywood musicals of the 1950s.

She was featured in the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records under "Most Valuable Legs", because a $5 million insurance policy was reportedly taken out by the MGM Studios on her legs in 1952.

Tula Ellice Finklea was born on March 8, 1921 in Amarillo, Texas.

Tula suffered with polio as a child and her parents arranged for her to take dance lessons.

Apparently, her younger brother Thomas had trouble pronouncing the word "sister" and settled for ‘Sid’.

While still a teenager, Tula was sent to California for professional dance training and became a member of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo adopting the name ‘Felia Sidorova’.

She was on a European tour when she met Nico Charisse, a handsome young dancer and dance instructor.

They fell in love and married in Paris. Three years later they had a son, Nicky.

After several small dancing parts in films and now using the stage name of ‘Lily Norwood’ she made her first notable appearance in the film .

In 1946 MGM signed her to a contract and gave her minor roles in several films, including The Harvey Girls, Till the Clouds Roll By and Ziegfeld Follies in which she danced a brief

Cyd Charisse

It was the producer Arthur Freed who changed her name to Cyd Charisse. Her musical films during the late 1940s included Fiesta, The Unfinished Dance, On An Island with You, The Kissing Bandit, Words and Music and East Side West Side.

In 1948 Cyd married the singer Tony Martin and they had a son during their marriage, Tony Martin Jnr. She is well remembered for her role in Singin' in the Rain. She appeared in only one sequence - the Broadway Ballet, in which Gene Kelly imagines a hoofer's rise to fame on the Great White Way. It was the sequence everybody remembered, as the legendary Charisse legs snaked

But my favourite was Brigadoon where Cyd starred in the role of ‘Fiona Campbell’.

Cyd was in a series of successful musical films such as Deep In My Heart, It's Always

Fair Weather, Meet Me in Las Vegas and once again co-starred with Fred Astaire in Silk Stock ings.

After the period of the Hollywood musicals faded Cyd turned to acting roles in films such a Two Weeks in Another Town, Something's Go to Give, The Silencers and Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood.

In 1972 Cyd Charisse performed the role o ‘Sue Smith’ in the Australian tour of the stage musical No No Nanette but had to leave the show and was replaced by Yvonne De Carlo So, Cyd Charisse was here in Melbourne a Her Majesty's Theatre working with Bobby Limb, Rosie Sturgess and Jill Perryman.

In her later years Cyd performed onstage and was a guest star in television shows.

After receiving the National Medal Of Free dom from President George Bush in 2006, Cyd began having heart troubles. She suffered a mas sive heart attack on June 16, 2008 and died the following day at the age of 86.

Cyd Charisse was survived by her husband Tony Martin and was buried at the Hillside Me morial Park.

Director Jessica Bridgfoot confirmed Priscilla Presley will travel form her home in Los Angeles to Bendigo to officially launch the exhibition.

Elvis: Direct from Graceland is a major new biographical exhibition exploring one of the most iconic and influential figures of the 20th century.

Exclusive to Bendigo, curated by Bendigo Art Gallery in collaboration with Graceland, the exhibition will explore Elvis’s stellar career.

His larger-than-life persona, lesserknown aspects of his early year, interests and personal life and his radical sense of style.

The exhibition will feature around 300 authentic artifacts owned by Elvis Presley, direct from the icon’s Graceland home in Memphis, Tennessee – including his military uniform, his customised 1976 Harley-Davidson FLH1200, and an amazing array of his jumpsuits – to personal items like Lisa Marie’s baby clothes, Elvis’s first job application and a crayon box he took to elementary school The exhibition will also feature many items that rarely travel beyond the Graceland gates, including Elvis’s wedding tuxedo and Priscilla’s wedding dress and two costumes from the acclaimed television performance known as 68 Comeback Special and garments from his eclectic home wardrobe.

■ Following sell out shows and hard fan crushes in the UK, musical comedy dynamo Amanda Jane Pritchard is back home and back on stage at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with an expanded, ampedup version of her hit Edinburgh Fringe show, Google Amanda Jane Dildo.

She’s been sacked for gross misconduct, has two failed marriages and three broken engagements, was once a high-flying PR maven working with the likes of Gordon Ramsay and Matt Preston and has fallen on her face and broken her front teeth three times (but only fell in love with one dentist).

And that’s just in real life.

On stage, Amanda Jane will grab you and politely hold your hand through an off-beat excursion of ridiculously naughty tales and oddly familiar tunes.

“I corrupt popular songs from the likes of Britney Spears, Kylie, Elton John and The Beatles and weave wild (but true) tales from my mentally disordered and colourful life,” says Amanda Jane.

All her songs are drawn from her life pre and post Bipolar Diagnosis in 2015. “Bipolar diagnosis changed my life. Part of my journey of recovery and mental health has been about being honest and facing my fears. This show does all those things in the biggest and best possible way: it bares it all.”

“I’m also really happy to be returning to the stage in Melbourne in line with World Bipolar Day on March 30. I hope my show can raise a bit of awareness about what it means to be bipolar, and hopefully dispel some myths along the way.”

The sum of $2 from every ticket sold on opening weekend (April 1-3) will be donated to BipolarAustralia.

Amanda Jane wrote, produced and performed in two critically acclaimed musical comedy plays in Melbourne (Swipe Left for Love and Two Bad Dates and Two Broken Noses) before booking a one-way ticket to Edinburgh Fringe in 2018, with $11,500 she won on The Chase Australia.

The prize money didn’t last, but her career did. “I lived out of a suitcase for the best part of two years and performed all over the UK. It was the best way to hone my craft and become the performer I am today.”

For MICF 2022, Amanda Jane is joined by acclaimed jazz guitarist Mark Morand and dancers Joshua Shielding and Fifi DiFreak (Fiona DiBerardino).

“Since becoming synonymous with dildos, I’ve developed quite the fascination with the different types that are out there,” says Amanda Jane.

“So I’ve expanded the level of dildo inclusion in the show, with the assistance of my amazing dancers, who manage to turn society’s idea of sexy-norms into their very own sex-toys.”

Shrek Jr at Warrandyte

■ Shrek Jr is being presented for seven performances as a Diamond Valley Singers Youth production from April 1 - 9 at the Warrandyte High School Theatre, Warrandyte.

The story tells of Shrek, a gigantic, greenskinned, physically intimidating ogre with a Scottish accent, but we learn in the show that he is much smaller than the average ogre.

Even though his background is something of a mystery, on his seventh birthday Shrek was sent away by his parents because it was an ogre tradition. His parents then evict him from their swamp.

Audiences will learn the rest of Shrek's magical story when attending the show directed by Lexi Patman. “I am excited to be directing Shrek Jr with DVS," says Lexi.

"I have previously performed in junior productions with DVS and have now come full circle. I am really honoured to be moving into a creative role with this wonderful company.”

A motto of the Diamond Valley Singers is 'Acting locally and thinking Globally' and the Diamond Valley Singers will donate proceeds from the performances to International Needs Australia and Open House in Macleod.

The Darkening Sky interweaves lives from the past and present in a desperate bid to solve the unexplained disappearance of two women.

In the warm and familiar surrounds of his local bar Jamie (Brian Lipson) has managed to build a life of peace and solitude for decades.

Now thrust unwillingly into reconstructing troubled memories, his belief in the calm surface of his childhood crumbles - surrounded by elements from a past he didn’t even know existed.

At the same time a detective (Tom Dent) is handed a Cold Case involving the disappearance of a young woman in the 1980s.

Chasing answers to this mystery unearths a web of political intrigue, violence, and sacrifice.

Featuring live pianist Adrian Montana accompanying the action with original compositions, The Darkening Sky also employs multimedia to heighten the experience for audiences, taking them along on the winding and surprising journey through the streets of St Kilda and inner-city Melbourne.

“I have always been a fan of film noir: its stark black and while imagery, desperate characters, hidden world of underworld operatives and its tone of melancholy and loss”, explains writer/director Richard Murphet.

A story of strength, resistance, hope and possibility, Black Cockatoo, an Ensemble Theatre Production, inspired by the true story of legendary First Nations cricketer Johnny Mullagh and Australia’s first ever international sporting team.

by Wesley Enoch, the play tells of how over 150 years ago, 13 brave Aboriginal men in Western Victoria picked up their cricket bats and embarked on a treacherous voyage to England and into the unknown.

■ Flux Job is the new dance work by Lucy Guerin Inc, premiering at Arts House, North Melbourne from March 16-20 Created during the Melbourne lockdowns, the making of Flux Job was disrupted and extended, with short bursts of activity interspersed with long periods of postponement.

The passing of time felt different as whole days and months seemed lost in a single moment, yet an afternoon could stretch on without end.

Guerin explains that isolation and restrictions have changed our perspectives:“As this world shattering event developed around us and the days rolled by, we became dulled and hypersensitised, free-floating yet locked into routine.”

“We wanted to be together but were confronted by separation and a shrinking into ourselves,” said Guerin.

Against the backdrop of a devastating event, four dancers share personal experiences that ask the question: who are we when we’re on our own, and who are we with others?

As a cinematic experience with edits and close ups, slow motion and climaxes, Flux Job uses both choreography and scripted word to show how different modes of communication convey meaning.

Guerin has collaborated with celebrated theatre-maker Adena Jacobs to create a work that shifts between the layered, fluctuating language of movement and the more everyday realm of words with finite meanings.

A story of constant change, vastness and minutiae, Flux Job engages with the danger of proximity and the loneliness of separation in a heightened world.

While the date starts off normally, as the two begin to connect they are forced to confront and unpack their emotional baggage. Their insecurities are manifested as visions of their ex-partners, friends giving unsolicited advice and even imaginary family members.

The show recounts the story of the Dashwood sisters, who are born into a wealthy English family in the mid 1800s and then must deal with a drastic change of their circumstances when they find themselves destitute.

Older sister Elinor believes in letting honour and duty rule over heart. Her impulsive younger sister, Marianne, is guided only by her feelings.

Their two very different approaches take them through family tragedy, romantic entanglement, and the complexities of living at the heart of the British Empire, where they are forced to seek financial security through marriage.

Sense and Sensibility - the Musical focuses on timeless questions such as how we know what people are worth and hones in on the issues of colonialism, the social contract and what it means to be an ethical person in an unethical system.

The reimagined story still has pivotal moments from the original novel but has some added thought-provoking narrative and original music.

Observations Here-After

● Julie Holland ■ If the definition of a good author is one whose pages you can’t resist turning, then Australian contemporary author is just that beast.

Following on the success of last year’s book That Summer at Nautilus Cove, set on the Sunshine Coast, Julie has now returned to her childhood home town of Melbourne with her latest book, Here-After.

It’s a very clever title, as it combines an intriguing ghost story with common sense reality.

Abigail Coucher is a well-off widow with grown up children living overseas, and she decides to follow a dream in buying a lovely but run down old building in Melbourne to renovate, live in and perhaps create a quirky shop and gallery.

So she buys Binalong, which coincidentally was the dream location for her husband Luca’s restaurant plan.

But all is not as it seems, and Abigail has bought into more than she bargained for, and has to come to grips with certain secrets she discovers about her late husband.

While Abigail suffers from feelings of doubt about her actions, she is also strong enough to follow her gut feeling and see where some strange experiences lead her.

On the way she finds great support from old and new friends, and eventually from a special someone.

What is refreshing about Julie Holland’s latest book is that it doesn’t follow the conventional patter of girl meets boy as the focus of her story.

Her chief protagonist is always a mature woman who is on the chronologically advantaged side of 45, and who has so much to give the world and many goals to achieve.

While there is a love interest, it doesn’t get in the way of Abigail’s path of self-growth and standing on her own two feet very successfully. And I found it impossible to put down.

Hosted by President of Box Hill RSL, John Haward, who told stories of Box Hill RSL and being a guiding light for veterans and their families for over 100 years.

Attending were the birthday boys Gavin Wood, Head of Countdown Motion Pictures; Alan Johnson, Head of the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites, Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood; and international film and television director, Rod Hardy.

One of the guests flew in from Los Angeles the day before to attend. Barry Wilson, cinematographer on Crawford Productions and then in the States on The Dukes of Hazzard, Melrose Place and many others.

Love scammers

■ In the first three quarters of 2021, Americans lost $343M+ to romance scams, per an analysis by Atlas. That’s more than all of 2020, in which Americans reported $304M in romance scams to the FTC, up 50 per cent from 2019.

What’s a romance scam? According to the FBI, it’s when a scammer uses a bogus online persona to build a relationship with someone they later con out of money.

Romance scammers typically lurk on dating sites or social media to find victims, and may be part of a criminal organization. Common targets are lonely or vulnerable people over 50, often women.

Scammers establish trust and affection, then ask for money perhaps for medical or legal fees, debt, or travel expenses. And they usually want it via some less traceable means, like gift or reload cards, transfers, or crypto.

Why the boom in romance scams? One theory: the pandemic. People have a good excuse for not wanting to meet in person and have been more isolated than ever. A recent study found 36 per cent ofAmericans are feeling “serious loneliness.”

■ The FBI has arrested a young man who sprayed cops with pepper spray, smashed out a window and broke into the US Capitol before he went to basic training for the U.S. Air Force.

Aiden Bilyard was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, according to court records.

He faces a host of charges, including felony civil disorder, assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon, destruction of government property, entering and remaining in a restricted building with a deadly or dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct with a deadly or dangerous weapon, and several other misdemeanours.

US Federal Debt facts

■ As Congress worked in recent days to increase the legal limit on the federal debt, the Treasury kept that debt artificially frozen at approximately $28.9 trillion.

With that limit lifted, the federal debt will take a jump upward, then keep steadily climbing, constantly increasing the burden on future taxpayers.

In 2018, according to the last complete annual report on individual income tax returns published by the Internal Revenue Service, there were 100,424,240 households in the United States that filed what the IRS calls a "taxable return."

"The taxable and non-taxable classification of a return for this report is determined by the presence of 'total income tax,'" explained the IRS. "'Total income tax,'" it said, "was the sum of income tax after credits."

In other words, the 100,424,240 households that filed a "taxable return" in 2018 actually paid income taxes to the federal government.

If you divide the $28,908,004,857,445 in debt that the federal government owed before the debt limit was lifted by the 100,424,240 American households that paid net income taxes in 2018, it works out to approximately $287,859 per incometax-paying household.

Back in 1989, the year that President Ronald Reagan left office, there were 89,178,355 income-tax-paying households in the United States, according to the IRS. At the end of January that year, the federal debt was $2,697,957,000,000.

Cannabis taxes

■ In 2020, US cannabis sales hit a record $17.5B, per Forbes.

But a new report from the Marijuana Policy Project found that states are also profiting.

The 18 states that have legalised recreational cannabis have raked in $10.4B in tax revenue since 2014.

The report does not include local tax revenues…but cities pull in money, too. Denver has generated $237.5M. California’s West Hollywood sees itself as a future Amsterdam.

It currently has six dispensaries in 1.8 square miles, generating $2.2M a year.

Where does the money go? Every state is different, but many support schools, infrastructure, or non-profits.

For example, Colorado splits its money among funds including the Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Fund.

Since 2014, it has received $325M+ in excise taxes. California has given ~$100M to organisations that work with communities harmed by the war on drugs, per AP News.

Michigan generated $45.7M in 2020 from excise taxes and fees, which it splits between its School Aid Fund, the Michigan Transportation Fund, municipalities and counties, and admin costs.

A 2021 study from the Pew Research Centre found that only 8 per cent of US adults think cannabis should be illegal, while 31 per cent are cool with medical use and 60% are fine with recreational use, too.

Stars: *** Review: On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station-but when the hit-man turns up at the precinct, an unsuspecting rookie cop finds herself caught in the crosshairs.

Uncomplicated, well staged '70s inspired action thriller is as unoriginal as it gets, but it's plainly obvious that co-writer and director Joe Carnahan and coproducer and star Gerard Butler knew that from the outset, and as a result have delivered a pulpy thrill-ride that owes much to, or draws upon, the western genre, with such classics as Howard Hawks' 1959 classic "Rio Bravo" and most notably its subsequent 1976 reimagining "Assault on Precinct 13" by John Carpenter, along with a touch of Quentin Tarantino to spice up the mix.

There's nothing new here, but it's nonetheless, a big, dumb, fun, loud, lean, mean, old fashioned 'take no prisoners' shoot 'em up with Gerard Butler doing what he does best as the hit-man, along with a stand-out supporting cast, most notably Frank Grillo as the con-artist and Alexis Louder as the heroine rookie cop who gets caught up in the mayhem, and even though it won't garner any Oscar nominations, it knows exactly what it is and exactly where it is going, an effectively entertaining pot-boiler with its tongue firmly in its check and a thrill-ride filled with baddies, gunplay and pyrotechnics that many will be glad they went along for the ride!

Stars: **½ Review: When the aging crime boss Meyer Lansky is investigated one last time by the FBI, who suspect he has stashed away millions of dollars over half a century, the retired gangster reveals to a writer the untold story about his life as the notorious boss of the National Crime Syndicate and his associations with such gangland figures as Charles "Lucky" Luciano, Al Capone, Albert Anastasia and childhood friend Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, to name a few.

Pedestrian but nonetheless a good, solid and compelling enough biopic on the legendary crime boss is brought all the more vividly to life thanks to the presence and performance of veteran actor Harvey Keitel, and even thoughcliché dominates, budget restraints are obvious and length over running the mark.

This is a monumental step up and far cry from numerous other recent gangster biopics, most notably the 2018s diabolically cringe inducing mess "Gotti" with John Travolta and 2020s grotesquely demented and heavyhanded "Capone" with Tom Hardy, this remains a fascinating and engaging watch despite the flaws and no matter what expectations you may have in place beforehand.

Rourke’s Reviews The Batman

■ (M). 175 minutes. Opens in cinemas, including IMAX, March 3.

Wanting to dig deeper and darker than other adaptations of the DC comic creation, this admittedly intriguing production is hamstrung by a shallow script, ridiculous overlength, and a deliberate restraint so that as many young teens can buy tickets for it as possible.

Robert Pattinson plays Batman/ Bruce Wayne, and the night time crime fighting is having a serious effect on both his mental health and views on human nature, a situation that is worrying his butler, Alfred (Andy Serkis).

Gotham City is thrown into chaos when a mysterious psycho called The Riddler (Paul Dano) starts murdering notable politicians and law enforcers, who seem connected to a dark secret, a secret that may involve Wayne’s long dead parents.

Also complicating matters are Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), The Penguin (an unrecognisable Colin Farrell), and his mobster boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).

Co-writer/director Matt Reeves, who scored strongly the recent Planet Of The Apes sequels, wants to take Batman in a decidedly more adult direction, with a psychological dissection of Wayne and his nemesis, exploring how similar they are in many ways; damaged people who no longer trust the system and the people who run it, leading to a distortion of justice, causing violence that will eventually hurt the innocent.

But Reeves and his producers make the huge mistake of wanting to do it within an audience friendly, PG-13 (the movie is rated M here) framework, robbing the material’s potential of truly walking down and confronting the most harrowing, disturbing aspects of modern society.

This film really needed to be rated either MA or R. As such, the script never digs very deep, and for a movie that runs almost three hours, that leaves quite a huge hole, one that is never satisfyingly filled.

Pattinson is okay, but all he really has to do is look glum, while Kravitz cannot rise above a badly written role, complete with risible dialogue, and the moments of sexual tension between her and Pattinson is extremely clumsy.

Everyone else does what’s asked of them, but their characters are sketchy at best. There is unnecessary narration, and dialogue too often solely exists to spoon feed the audience.

Though slick, The Batman is so obsessed with surface level grimness, that it forgets to examine the gritty, unsettling details underneath, resulting in an incredibly frustrat-

ing viewing experience. Imagine if David Fincher made Seven, and Sidney Lumet made Prince Of The City, as PG-13 movies, and you’ll have a fair idea of what to expect here.

Cyrano

■ (PG). 124 minutes. Now showing in cinemas.

A heavy-handed adaptation of the oft-filmed Edmond Rostand play, this latest iteration might end up feeling redundant, but what does make it worth watching are two terrific central performances.

The plot basically remains the same; Cyrano (Peter Dinklage), a passionately proud poet and swordsman, secretly yearns for the fiery Roxane (Haley Bennett), whom he has known for years.

Unaware of Cyrano’s feelings, Roxane falls for the young, handsome Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr), and discovering he is to be a new recruit at the garrison Cyrano is part of, persuades her longtime friend to ask Christian to woo her via letter.

Reluctantly agreeing to help, Cyrano finds out that Christian is hopeless with the written and spoken word, so decides to write for him, causing many complications between everyone involved.

Erica Schmidt’s screenplay (adapted from her own musical play, which also starred husband Dinklage) comes across like that of a Disney animated film, where messages are laid on thick, and lessons must be learned, and director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pan, Darkest Hour) makes sure every point is hammered home ad nauseam.

This, added with a series of forgettable, jarringly inserted songs (one number practically turns into a Bonnie Tyler music video), makes the two hour running time seem longer.

Harrison Jr. is under-utilised (compared to his outstanding turns in Waves and Luce), while the supporting cast aren’t given much of a chance to register (Ben Mendelsohn is particularly wasted).

Despite these flaws, both Dinklage (The Station Agent) and Bennett (The Devil All The Time, Swallow) are excellent, bringing life to their respective characters, and their work is worth the price of admission.

Pales in comparison to the 1990 version starring Gerard Depardieu, and as a different presentation of the story, it doesn’t come together as well as Steve Martin’s underrated 1987 variation, Roxanne.

■ The popular Balnarring Picnic Races are back in action on Sunday (Mar. 13), the Labour Day Weekend.

As usual their top man, Terry Mulcahy, is right on the ball, with plenty of action all day, on and off the track.

It will be, as usua,l a relaxing day, where you can get into your comfy outfits, and bring the children along with you for a fun day.

There will be some great racing. They cater well for the children on the day. For the Mums, Dads, and others, there will be plenty of food vans operating with a variety of foods available on the picturesque course.

For the children there will also be face painting, a petting zoo, plus many other attractions.

The bar will be in operation, and you are welcome to bring your own picnic.

Gates will open at 10am, with the first race getting underway at 1.15pm.

One thing about Picnic Races, you can always get a winner, especially if you are a favourites punter.

Races from all over Australia will be covered on the screens on track.On top of all that if you get in early you could win double passes.

■ Betting has opened up before noms for the Newmarket Handicap, and with a doubt about the best sprinter in the world, Nature Strip running, this paves the way for a new favourite.

Bookies were quick to label, the top threeyear-old Sydney colt, Home Affairs, to get the money.

He narrowly got home from the unlucky Nature Strip, in the Lightning, but is all class.

Prepared by leading mentor John O’ Shea, Lost and Running, has now won eight of his 12 starts, and is up there with the best.
