Local People Alexandra Junior Presentations

■ Alexandra Football-Netball Club held its 2021 Junior Presentation at the club rooms on Friday (Nov. 12).

A crowd of players, parents, grandparents and supporters enjoyed presentations of trophies, medallions and assorted gifts.

Under 9s football coach Sam Kidd commenced the presentations with a speech followed by each player receiving a medallion that were also sponsored by Sam Kidd.

Local News

Changes on Seymour line

■ Railway passengers are encouraged to plan ahead this summer, as major works get underway on the Shepparton Line upgrade.

The works will see stage 2 and 3 of the upgrade gain major ground, with construction to begin on extending platforms at Nagambie and Murchison East stations.

Crews will install the pre-cast concrete platform panels and coping stones that will form the longer platforms, enabling VLocity trains to run on the line for the first time.

Boring and pipe installation works will continue north of Seymour to facilitate upgrades to 59 level crossings between Donnybrook and Shepparton. The upgrades to the level crossings will ensure their compatible with VLocity trains, and boost safety for all passengers and road users.

Coaches will replace Shepparton Line trains for the entire journey between Melbourne and Shepparton from Wednesday December 1 until Sunday December 12, to allow all these works to take place. Trains will still run between Southern Cross and Seymour.

Jacinta Allan, Minister for Transport Infrastructure, said: “We promised to get on with the Shepparton Line Upgrade to deliver more comfortable and reliable services – and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”

Local Briefs Amnesty details

■ Cr Eric Lording of Glenburn is participating in the firearms and explosives amnesty, as was reported in last week’s Local Paper.

Cr Lording says he has been contacted by the Licensing Division of Victoria Police, which reminds that final destruction of firearms must be done by Victoria Police.

“My intention is to ensure any firearm handed in to me cannot be used in any future crime,” Cr Lording told The Local Paper.

Cr Lording is willing to travel at his own expense to pick-up the unwanted firearms and explosives. There is no charge. He can be contacted on 0419 60 5060.

■ Cr Frances Eyre is tipped to become the next Mayor of Nillumbik Shire Council. The election by Coiuncillors for the top position takes place this month.

Cr Eyre is currently Deputy Mayor, and is a representative for Swipers Gully Ward.

“Our policy outlines our commitment to being accessible and responsive to determining the outcome of complaints quickly and creating a culture that encourages feedback.”

Carols go-ahead

■ Whittlesea City Council is to proceed with its Carols service as a live event at the Terrace Lawn at the Civic Centre, South Morang, from 7.30pm on Friday, December 10.

The event will also be livestreamed on the internet.

This in-person event will feature a virtual carols choir, as well as live performers, kids activities, food vans and more. Entry to the event will require those 16 and above to show evidence of full vaccination or an official exemption.

The repertoire will include newer songs drawn from the rich culture of the City of Whittlesea’s residents.

Davis stakes claim

● David Davis MLC ■ Kew MLA Tim Smith’s drink-drive accident had the unintended effect of pressing the fast-forward button on Victorian Liberal politics.

Smith was forced to abandon hopes of being re-selected for the seat, and other politicians have been forced to show their hands.

Last Friday (Nov. 12) was the deadline for pre-selection for a number of State seats, and senior Liberal David Davis was forced to show his hand in nominating for the Kew seat, signalling his intention to leave his Southern Metro seat in the Upper House.

It means that David Davis has indicated that he wants the Lower House seat, probably to be a contender for the Liberal leadership if Matthew Guy fails at the November 2022 State Election.

Davis would be aged 64 at the State Election due to be held in November 2026.

■ Trivia footnote: Davis’s wife is Leanne Mercer, former producer of Bert Newton’s Good Morning Australia. More recently she has been producer of the Nine Network’s Postcards.

■ A number of other challenges in the Liberal chain of commend were revealed when pre-selection nominations closed on Friday.

Former Federal politician Chris Crewther wants the Mornington seat held by David Morris.

Gembrook MLA Brad Battin, who made his own leadership ambitions apparent earlier this year is being challenged by Matthew Kean.

Former State Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien is being opposed for his Malvern seat by Virginia Wallace, a former director of Tennis Victoria, and with a business CV that includes NAB, AMP and BHP. Another opponent is councillor Alex Lew., Brighton MLA James Newbury is under challenge. So is Forest Hill MLA Neil Angus (from Nick McGowan, a Matthew Guy mate).

■ The City of Whittlesea says its commitment to making young LGBTIQA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual) people feel safe and included has been affirmed.

Its Youth Services team has gained Rainbow Tick accreditation until April 2024.

The team is one of the first local government youth services with Rainbow Tick accreditation – a proud achievement which is said to demonstrate the Council’s commitment to creating socially cohesive communities.

“We want our young people, no matter their sexual orientation or gender, to feel seen, supported and included, and the Rainbow Tick accreditation is another example of our efforts in supporting and celebrating diversity in the City of Whittlesea,” said Administrator Peita Duncan said.

Award goes to Kinglake

■ Exceptional work of Victoria’s early childhood education sector has been recognised and celebrated at the 2021 Victorian Early Years Awards.

Kinglake Ranges Children’s Centre was given this year’s Minister’s Award in recognition for the success of their Bush Kinder for Mental Health program - addressing the rise of anxiety and mental health issues in young children through play-based learning and reconnecting children with nature.

Early Childhood Teacher of the Year was awarded to Louise Bayley from Kalkallo Preschool for her work in promoting cultural understanding, equality and diversity as well as building strong partnerships with families and tailoring learning environments and supports to improve children’s and families’ health and wellbeing.

“The early childhood sector has been incredibly resilient and dedicated in giving Victoria’s youngest children the best start to life despite the challenges of the pandemic over the past two years, said Ingrid Stitt, Each winner receives a grant of $15,000 to be used for either professional development or to support their nominated initiative.

■ Mansfield Council has been awarded $300,000 to drive economic and social activity through the Victorian Government’s Outdoor Economy Package.

The Victorian Government last year awarded Council funds for outdoor dining activation which was spent on bolstering hospitality businesses like installing marquees on footpaths to extend dining spaces.

This new funding is intended to serve a broader business base and in addition to hospitality is designed to help gyms, creative businesses, personal/beauty services and non-essential retail by supporting Council to facilitate the activation of more outdoor spaces.

Mayor Cr Mark Holcombe said that the funds enhance economic and social activity in key spaces across the Shire.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to refresh our public spaces as we open our borders again,” said Cr Holcombe.

Suicide Awareness

■ Goulburn Valley Suicide Awareness Group will hold its inaugural Walk for Awareness commencing with registration at the Yea Railway Station at 8:30am Sunday (Nov. 21).

This is a grass roots mental health initiative that aims to provide an opportunity for people who have lost friends or family to come together and remember their loved ones.

Emergency call

■ Marysville SES were called out on Saturday afternoon to assist a vehicle at the top of Mt Margaret Rd, after two trees had fallen and blocked the road in either direction. Volunteers made the journey up in muddy conditions, with sleet, hail, and snow falling. A passing 4WD had been able to clear part of the tree and the vehicles could travel out. After ensuring everyone was safe, the SES unit isolated the area. ● From Page 9

Vics lose $30m to scams

■ Victorians are being urged to protect themselves and their families from financial scams as part of a new Crime Stoppers Victoria campaign.

The Let’s Talk Scams campaign is focused on preventing the public from falling victim to financial scams.

These scams promise victims big payouts, fast money or guaranteed returns only to dupe them of hard-earned cash.

According to the ACCC's Scamwatch, financial scams have caused the most losses this year, so far costing Australians more than $114 million.

Victorians have lost $30 million to financial scams - representing a quarter of all money lost nationwide.

By the end of 2021, it's predicted losses to financial scams Australia-wide will have more than doubled last year’s figure.

■ People aged over 65 are most likely to fall victim to financial scams.

The Chinese, Vietnamese, Burmese and Sri Lankan communities have also been disproportionally affected with scammers preying on people for whom English is a second language.

Crime Stoppers Victoria Chief Executive Stella Smith said: "Scammers will target older people because they are less likely to tell anyone.

“That’s why talking with your parents and grandparents is an important step in scam prevention.

"We’re hearing stories of parents and grandparents who have lost thousands of dollars to scammers promising quick money, guaranteed returns, or big pay-outs with little or no risk.

"We don’t want people to feel embarrassed about being scammed.

Ms Smith said financial scams were often disguised within financial trends like cryptocurrency, celebrity endorsements and superannuation.

"Scammers will often use a variety of methods to target their victims, including unsolicited phone calls, text messages, emails and social media messages.”

Court Rounds 18-months jail for Kimelman

■ Avrohom Mordechai Kimelman, of St Kilda East, has been sentenced to 18-months imprisonment, to be released immediately upon entering into a $5000 recognizance and an undertaking to be of good behaviour for two years, after being convicted in the County Court of insider trading and market manipulation offences.

Mr Kimelman is a former director of Quantum Resources Ltd, now known as Nova Minerals Limited.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission said that Mr Kimelman sought to manipulate Quantum’s share price and procured the acquisition of almost two million shares while possessing information not available to the market.

On November 16, 2015, Mr Kimelman conspired to manipulate Quantum’s share price.

Mr Kimelman also procured the acquisition of 1,990,963 Quantum shares between April 27, 2016, and May 5, 2016, while possessing inside information concerning Quantum’s intention to acquire Manitoba Minerals Pty Ltd, which had agreed to acquire an interest in a lithium resource in Canada.

Judge Meredith noted the seriousness of market misconduct and its ability to undermine confidence in the integrity of Australia’s financial markets.

An important feature of the promotion of confidence is the presence of criminal offences for recognised market misconduct.

Judge Meredith further noted that had Mr Kimelman not pled guilty, notionally he would have imposed a sentence of two years and two months in prison, to be released after serving 12 months on a recognizance and undertaking to be of good behaviour As a result of his conviction, Mr Kimelman is automatically disqualified from managing corporations for five years from the date of conviction.

The matter was prosecuted by the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.

Ready, Set, Go at Yea

■ A big day ar Yea Golf Club with the second round of the Championships and also the play off for the Gold Monthly Medal in contention.

After a hard year holding any such event has been difficult, all out of practice, trying to catch up on competitions that are normally held over the course of the year has put a lot of strain on all those trying to organise and for those who wish to play.

The Club had 14 ladies brave the elements.

It was not a really nice day. Starting off overcast and humid the ladies did not know what to wear.

Clothes on, clothes off. Usual Victorian weather.

But we all survived and so very thankful that we Some of us got a little wet but it beats doing the housework. The course once again credit to the volunteers looks spectacular.

Our winner for the day was Sharon Grogan (40) nett 74.

Consequently Sharon also won the on the day event. Adrian Anglin won NTP and Karen Sangster managed two gobblers. Sharon took home a beautiful golden rose donated by Life Members Myrna Patterson.

Four went to try their luck at Seymour but came home with tails between legs but it was a beautiful day and the course was looking great.

Tournaments etc have been a thing of the past. Congratulations to Marysville lady Gail Leigh for winning the main event.

Sharon Grogan is looking to raise money for golf carts to enable those who wish to play an opportunity to enjoy the game of golf even though they may have a disability or perhaps a health issue that needs a little help to get around and enjoy a game. ★ Yea Golf Club is looking to wheel in two new gold carts to support many aged and medically compromised members of the Yea and Murrindindi community.

The team responsible are seeking to promote health and inclusion for: ■ Current golf members who now cannot play due physical inability ■ Potential new members who would like to play golf but require mobility assistance ■ Non-Club members who would like to play casually but require mobility assistance ■ Members of other regional golf clubs who would usually hire a golf cart “There are many reasons to secure resource that help people stay mobile and we are on a roll. The past two years in regional Victoria has been challenging for many. Often the most vulnerable have been isolated from friends and family and the usual community activities,” said Sharon Grogan, who initiated the Ready Set Go challenge.

This problem can affect all ages in the community, but the elderly and those with a disability and/or people recovering from an illness are at high risk, particularly those with mobility issues which can interfere with their usual activities.

“Being part of this project is so rewarding and I for one take pride in being part of the Yea community and all it has to offer. I’m rallying the teams and every little bit helps to achieve our goals,” Sharon said.

Recently we have observed members have ceased to play golf due to injury, medical conditions and ageing. A golf cart will enable many the opportunity to remain involved and participate in the game of golf for as long as possible.

The social and psychological benefits are far reachingand will certainly enable inclusion for those who are challenged.

Fund raising started two weeks ago and the Yea Golf Club Committee has fully supported the initiative. Yea Golf Club is managed by volunteers who energetically keep our magnificent club and its greens and fairways looking prestigious. They spend hours and hours of their time and energy to provide an asset for our community and we really need to take our hats off to them because they work extremely hard.

“Country communities have a history of raising funds to ensure equity for everyone in their community so one and all have access to resources they could not afford.

“Two Golf Carts for the Club will cost around $26,000 and we look forward to listing the names of all contributors in recognition of their generosity towards this great resource. Any local businesses interested in name rights for marketing, I would be pleased to provide more information.

“Lastly, we thank the Yea Golf Club and many locals who have already donated time and money for our carts.”

DV Library re-opens

■ The Diamond Valley Library, which has undergone an extensive $1.64 million upgrade, has now reopened.

The library, in Civic Drive Greensborough, has been completely refurbished creating a modern space where the community can not only enjoy books and reading, but meet and connect, work or study, relax and play.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Peter Perkins said it was pleasing to finally reopen the library to the public following the easing of the Victorian Government COVID-19 restrictions.

“Our community loves its libraries and we know they have been greatly missed during the various lockdowns over the past 18 months,” Cr Perkins said.

“We are really pleased to not only reopen, but share this incredible new space with users.

Local Briefs Roundabout time

■ Mansfield’s High Street roundabout garden will transform again to suit the changing of the season.

Parks and Gardens Supervisor Lauren McGinty said the next major planting included geraniums which had been removed and stored over winter.

“We’ve been feeding the geraniums and making sure they are looking their best for their return to the roundabout,” Ms McGinty said.

“The salvias were cut back and covered with sugar cane mulch to keep them nice and warm over winter. We’re hoping the warmer weather will also prompt their healthy return to add to the display.”

Mayor Cr Mark Holcombe said the roundabout was a symbol of the care Council took in maintaining the aesthetic of the Shire.

“We’re proud of the work done to continue the colourful displays at the roundabout throughout the year. It’s a colourful welcome to everyone who enters Mansfield,” said Cr Holcombe.

Eltham man’s book

■ Eltham volunteer firefighter Adrian Hyland is releasing a new book, Canticle Creek, next month.

The book is described as “an authentic, cracking, small town crime novel.”

Drawing on Adrian’s background as a volunteer firefighter, Canticle Creek explores the impact of bushfires on rural communities alongside the impact of when those with wealth and power ignore the continuing degradation of the environment.

Hardie Grant Publishing says Hyland spent many years living in remote areas (Victoria and Northern Territory) leading to a deep understanding of the nature – and importance - of community for small towns in Australia.

Help for seniors

■ Seniors needing help to use digital devices can sign up to a series of free City of Whittlesea digital literacy classes and boost their online connectivity.

Whittlesea Council has teamed up with Whittlesea U3A to run the classes for over55s, teaching participants how to use their Android or Apple phones, laptops, computers or tablets and get connected online.

Whittlesea Council Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said the COVID-19 pandemic meant that more than ever people were having to rely on technology and using a device, be it a computer, tablet or smart phone.

“Using a device for the first time can be scary and almost a new world of social connection, and it can be a steep learning curve when you’ve never done it before,” Ms Wilson said.

“The feeling of virtually connecting to a friend or family member is a huge achievement, and the digital literacy program will teach seniors all they need to know about getting online and becoming tech-savvy and more confident.

“Whittlesea U3A do terrific work supporting our senior community with a host of leisure, educational and creative activities, and these classes will teach so many relevant skills which will leave a lasting impact on our seniors.”

Topics covered will include: ■ Social media management and online safety ■ MyGov set-up, including adding a COVID19 digital vaccination certificate ■ Email set-up ■ Video calling ■ Applications ■ Internet connectivity ■ Data management.

The classes, hosted via Zoom by experienced Whittlesea U3A instructors, run every Tuesday from 2.30pm-4pm, and are limited to 15 participants. From early next year, they will run in-person in Lalor, Whittlesea, Mernda and Mill Park.

Regional Round-Up Grant application for Timber Harvest

■ Yarra Ranges Council will apply for a Victorian Government Grant to fund a Local Development Strategy, with the goal of supporting communities in the Upper Yarra through the timber industry’s transition out of Victorian public forests.

At their meeting on Tuesday last week (Nov. 9), Yarra Ranges Councillors voted to apply to the Victorian Government’s Forestry Local Development Strategy Grant Program for $400,000 in funding to create a Local Development Strategy for UpperYarra communities.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Jim Child, said that Council would apply for funding to develop a strategy with communities in Powelltown, Yarra Junction and Warburton.

“Because there’s not really one representative group for the region of those three towns, the State Government has agreed that the best agency to prepare a strategy is Local Government,” Cr Child said.

“I think this is where we step up to the plate, and we can do that quite well.

“This will involve our community – through a process where we elect a committee or a People’s Panel, to lead this process and generate great ideas that provide jobs and give great outcomes to our communities.”

The Local Development Strategy, which will be created with community representatives from each area and local expertise, will aim to: ■ Support the community’s transition away from native timber harvesting in Victorian public forests ■ Lead to the creation of new jobs in sustainable industries; and ■ Result in long-term economic and social benefits for each community.

In 2019, the State Government announced a plan to phase out native forest harvesting in Victorian public forests by 2030, with $120 million provided to support the transition of workers, communities and businesses over the coming years.

In March of this year, the State Government announced their Forestry Local Development Strategy Grant Program, with $4 million in funding available for grants across communities that will be impacted by the transition.

If Yarra Ranges Council is successful with its grant application, a volunteer committee will be established with balanced representation from Powelltown, Yarra Junction and Warburton to develop the strategy.

Yarra Ranges Council would appoint a Project Manager and Administration resource to oversee the project and run studies for the strategy.

Ryrie Ward Councillor, Cr Fiona McAllister, said Council’s grant application followed numerous meetings with the State Government about the timber industry transition, and the impact on local communities.

“I hope we never lose sight of how substantial the transition for the timber industry is,” Cr McAllister said.

“It has a 100 year, plus, history, and when you talk to so many of the families that live in the Yarra Ranges, they talk about a fourthor-fifth generation family involvement in the industry.

“The role we’re looking to take is, really, supporting our community in the way we should. Any Local Government is about improving quality of life for our community.

“In this particular undertaking, it is to make sure we do everything we can to work with communities most affected, in a way that gives them a strong voice and ownership of whatever the future may hold for them, in terms of their jobs, families and the local economy,” Cr McAllister said.

W’sea works fall short

■ Whittlesea City Council has had to make the embarrassing public admission that it has fallen short in its management of maintenance issues across the municipality.

“We know some areas of the municipality are currently not being maintained to the standard we all expect,” said an unsigned social media post at the weekend.

“Whilst the wet weather has played a part in this, we are aware there is a broader maintenance issue,” said a Council representative in the Facebook post.

“We are currently taking action to address this issue and look forward to seeing all of our open spaces back to looking their best shortly.”

The post was then compounded with a furthe acknowledgement that the Council might not be on top of getting things right, and needed tips from the public: “In the meantime, if you notice an area that is not being maintained you can report.”

The Council, headed by CEO Craig Lloyd, issued a puff line: “Here at Council we take pride in the maintenance and presentation of our parks and gardens.”

Mr Lloyd was signed as CEO with great fanfare in 2019. He is a former ‘Manager of Presentation’ at the Greater Bendigo Council.

Solar plan for Plenty

■ Nillumbik Shire Council’s plans to develop a 1.5 megawatt solar farm on the former Plenty landfill site continue to progress with the release of a concept design for the project’s first phase.

The design, now available for the community to view, provides an indication of what the solar farm will look like upon completion.

The facility will generate approximately 2200 megawatt hours of renewable energy each year – equal to powering more than 400 homes or 44,000 electric vehicles – and is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by 2400 tonnes a year.

When completed, the first stage will be large enough to meet the electricity needs for all of Council’s corporate facilities, including the Civic Centre and street lighting, delivering significant environmental

Nillumbik Council has entered into a partnership with renewable energy project company LMS Energy who are undertaking the design of the solar farm, and who will also

carry out its construction and ongoing maintenance.

Construction of the first stage is expected to commence in mid-2022 with expected completion around mid-2023.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Peter Perkins said the development of the Solar Farm would be a key component of Council’s 2022-2032 Climate Action Plan.

“The development of the solar farm is a significant and tangible example of Nillumbik Shire Council’s commitment to meaningful climate action and reflects both Council’s and our community’s strong view of the need for such action,” Cr Perkins said.

Council will hold two popup community information sessions at the site on: ■ Saturday, November 20, 10am-12 Noon ■ Saturday, November 27, 10am-12 Noon.

Thomastown woman charged

■ Detectives from the Vehicle Crime Squad have charged four people and seized a large amount of stolen property following the theft of 13 Ford motor vehicles in the northern suburbs in just over one month.

Police executed search warrants at a residential property on Dunfermline Avenue, Greenvale and a business address on Yellowbox Rd in Craigieburn, on Wednesday last week.

They subsequently seized a Jeep Compass, methylamphetamine, a stolen motorised scooter, cloned and stolen registration plates, personal details of over 60 victims of identity theft, a stolen disabled parking permit and other stolen items valued in excess of $12,000.

A 32-year-old Greenvale man was charged with traffick and possess drug of dependence, possess GHB, handle stolen goods, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and possess proceeds of crime. He was remanded in custody and will front Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on November 22.

A 28-year-old Greenvale woman was charged with traffick and possess drug of dependence, possession of identification information, possess GHB and commit indictable offences whilst on bail. She was remanded in cus-

tody and will face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on January 14.

An 18-year-old Greenvale man was charged with handle stolen goods and issued with a child caution notice.

A 26-year-old Thomastown woman was charged with possess drug of dependence and possession of identification information. She was bailed to face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on December 21.

Since October 1, there have been 13 reported thefts of 1990s model Fords, including Ford Falcons, one Laser and one Fairlane. All models were manufactured between 1995-1999.

Police will allege the offenders targeted these vehicles for their parts and or/rebirth. Parts have been found to have been stripped from the motor vehicles to be on-sold.

Local Briefs New history map

■ A new map will get City of Whittlesea residents exploring their own backyard, revealing scores of fascinating historical sites including a castle, a reservoir once the envy of Melbourne, and even troughs where thirsty horses stopped to water in the 1900s.

Whittlesea Council has launched the 50 Sites of Significance map, available in an interactive online version and in print in libraries and community centres.

Whittlesea Council Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said the map uncovered a variety of hidden gems spread across the municipality, each with a fascinating story.

“You might think the City of Whittlesea’s buildings aren’t that old, given all the new housing developments, but we have built heritage dating back to the 1800s,” Ms Wilson said.

“The new map is a great tool for helping you to get out and explore your own backyard and learn about its built cultural heritage.”

Whittlesea Historical Society Co-President Neil Johnson said the area was rich in post-colonial historic sites, including the Yan Yean Reservoir.

“I think a lot of people aren’t aware that in its day, when it was commissioned, it was the largest man-made water storage facility in the southern hemisphere, and Melbourne at the time was the envy of the world with its water system because our forefathers had good foresight,” Mr Johnson said.

“I think the map is a great initiative – it’s another way to showcase parts of our history, and it’s a fairly diverse history.”

Other map highlights include Bear’s Castle, a small, two-storey structure built in Yan Yean in 1846 for pastoralist John Bear using clay, straw, gravel and sand, and several Bills horse troughs, manufactured by George and Annis Bills to provide relief for working horses in the first half of the 20th century.

‘No’ to hospital

■ Nillumbik Shire Council has voted against the sale of Council-owned parkland at Civic Drive Greensborough to the Victorian Government as the site for a proposed community hospital.

The land had been identified by the Victorian Health Building Authority as a possible location for the Government’s proposed Eltham Area Community Hospital.

The decision follows a consultation process through which Nillumbik Council sought community views in which a majority of the 1070 respondents expressed opposition to any sale of the land.

Among the main reasons given by the 61 per cent of respondents in Council’s community consultation who opposed the proposal were; traffic congestion, parking issues, loss of public open space and public transport accessibility.

The land for the proposed site is zoned Public Park and Recreation.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Peter Perkins said the result of the consultation had made the community’s view very clear.

“The community has spoken on this matter and it has delivered a resounding message that it opposes the sale of this parkland.

“The reverberations from attempts by the previous Council to sell 17 Council reserves are still being felt and it is clear that parkland is highly valued throughout the Nillumbik community,” Cr Perkins said.

“Underpinning this strong community sentiment against the sale is the fact that the proposed site is also incompatible with state and local planning objectives. This combination of factors made a compelling argument in helping Council arrive at its decision.”

Blue Lake Ward Councillor Richard Stockman said it was important to respect the community’s view on this issue.

“The community, especially in my Ward, are very strongly opposed to this sale and we have to respect their position. I remain hopeful that a suitable alternative site can be identified,” he said.

Council remains supportive of a community hospital being built in the Eltham area.

■ Alexandra Indoor Heated Pool in Nihil St was officially opened on Saturday (Nov. 13) in the presence of Cr Damien Gallagher and Murrindindi Shire CEO Livia Bonazzi.

AIHP President Sam Hicks spoke of the years of effort by a dedicated team to bring the Pool facility to reality.

Ms Hicks acknowledged the Taungurung people, traditional custodians of the land.

Ms Hicks made mention of Naomi McNamara and Emily Walters of the Menzies Centre; Greta Vallance of Murrindindi U3A, and Ash Long of The Local Paper.

Members of the AIHP team were acknowledged: Vice-President Jason Krijt (apology); Tiffinie Reeves – Secretary/ Treasurer; Jacqui Caswell, Marg Rouse, Rod Falconer (apology) and Linda Watkins (in Queensland).

Special mention was made of coordinator Magenta Connolly.

Apologies were received from Murrindindi Mayor Cr Sandice McAulay, and Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish.

“I would love to take this opportunity to acknowledge the amazing work that you and the volunteer group have done - firstly, getting the support of the community to gain funding in the first place and, secondly, to completing this project despite the challenges that the universe has thrown at you, including but not limited to COVID 19 restrictions. in short - a heartfelt congratulations and thank you for this great community development activity,” said a special message from Cr McAulay.

Ms Hicks acknowledged funders: State Government of Victoria via the Pick My Project; FRRR - The Foundation for Rural andRegional Renewal who supported the original porposal, and then further for the aquatic wheelchair.

Both Funding Partners were unable to attend to as many in the original program have moved on.

Ms Hicks offered thanks support from many departments within Murrindindi Shire Council, with a willingness to share knowledge on the way forward.

Tiffinie Reeves was thanked for financial modelling and budgets, to Jason’s liaison with the trades and builders, to Jaq keeping of the minutes and sharing insights on how disabilities interact with pools, Marg’s social media sharing skills, to Rod - a jack of all trades.

“Behind our team are our kids, spouses, and partners who we acknowledge as they are often asked to assist in all sorts of areas.

Saying no to a team so driven wasn’t really an option just ask any other halves that are here today such as Bernhard, Phil, Scotty, and Alan.

“We need to also to acknowledge past team members; Mel Heard, Michelle Cowley and Meg Dunn.

“Finally, we need to say thanks to our local trades, our local community, many who assisted after hours, in many cases donating their time, expertise and or just getting in and getting a job done.

“So many with their ideas and assisting us to save money where we could such as larger suppliers such Charon from Solar Solutions was just one of many trades and suppliers who got in there to help. Shakespeare at St Kilda

■ Melbourne Shakespeare Company returns to the St Kilda Botanical Gardens for their fifth season at the Rose Garden with their original musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s farce The Comedy of Errors from December 3-19.

“Our shows combine all of the things audiences love about Shakespeare in the Summertime,” explained Artistic Director Jennifer Sarah Dean (The Globe, Moulin Rouge! The Musical) “We give Shakespeare a young, fresh twist including all of your favourite contemporary music combined with exciting choreography, audience insteaction, beautiful costumes and all set in one of the most idyllic venues in Melbourne the Rose Garden in St Kilda.”

Direction is by Ben Adams (Pop-up Globe) with original choreography from John Reed (West Side Story, Merrily We Roll Along) and musical direction from Benjamin Colley (Shrek!, Romeo and Juliet).

Melbourne Shakespeare Company is environmentally responsible, using only recycled, reclaimed and reused materials to create their productions.

Costumes are from Aislinn Naughton (Frozen, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), and set by Hayley James (As You Like It, The Winter’s Tale).

Right through the last 18 months this Melbourne-based support group for female writers of crime fiction has been staging online events, writing competitions and helping members get their books published.

Coming up at 8pm on Saturday, November 27, 8pm, is the 28 th Scarlet Awards Night, presented by actor Catherine McClements, and hosted by crime fiction expert, Sue Turnbull.

After talking about her life in crime with Sue, Catherine will announce the winners of the prestigious Stiletto award for female crime writers.

■ Set in the Calabrian town of Gioia Tauro, A Chiara is a coming-of-age story centred on 15-year-old Chiara Guerrasio (Swamy Rotolo).

Preparations are underway to celebrate the 18th birthday of her sister Giulia (Grecia Rotolo).

Typical teenagers, Chiara, Giulia and their cousins take selfies, gossip and get ready for the party.

At the party, we watch snapshots of the close-knit, extended Guerrasio family singing and dancing to Italian pop and Ed Sheeran music.

Through it all, Chiara floats, carefree and happy, if a little envious of her older sister.

Later that night, the Guerrasio car is blown up, and Chiara’s father Claudio (Claudio Rotolo) flees.

The following morning, she confronts her mother (Carmela Fumo) about her father’s sudden disappearance.

"A girl is better off if she doesn't know things,” she tells her.

The TV news reveals Claudio as a fugitive wanted by the law in connection to his membership as a 'Ndrangheta, the Calabrian Mafiosi criminal syndicate.

More secrets and lies are exposed as Chiara, Alice-like, begins to unravel in this looking-glass world she has stumbled into.

Chiara discovers a hidden bunker underneath the house.

When she tries to get answers from Giulia she is told to shut up.

Chiara then embarks on a quest with dogged determination to find her father and the answers to her questions about the family.

A Chiara is an impressive film.

Director Jonas Carpignano creates an other-worldly quality to this thriller where parts slowly assemble entirely from Chiara’s resolute gaze.

It all leads to a final reckoning, a loss of innocence and a momentous decision.

■ After nearly two years of lockdowns, cancellations, funding cuts, and uncertainty, St Kilda'sTheatre Works is moving forward into 2022.

This year's Launch, running from 7pm at the new Explosives Factory, is a hybrid livestreamed and in-person event.

With the in-person event already fully booked out, the wider arts community is encouraged to join the festivities online when live-streamed from 7.30pm.

Located around the corner from the Acland St venue, the Explosives Factory is a versatile workshop and development space complete with accommodation, bathroom, and kitchen facilities.

This setting will house new programs and act as a year-round rehearsal spot to partnering artists.

During Festivals it will be activated as a versatile 60 seat performance venue and, if needed, also provide a smaller and more intimate space for works less suited to the Theatre Works main space. And yes, it was an actual explosives factory in its past life.

Theatre Works has long existed to support emerging, established, local, national, and international artists.

This new growth of the organisation, as they move into their 41st year, highlights how they have prevailed for over four decades - acting as a vital springboard for hundreds of thousands of artists and arts makers in that time.

"We want to be there from the start and be an integral part of the evolution of the artist and the

development of their work,” highlights Theatre Works Executive Director Dianne Toulson.

From January, 2022 Theatre Works will host five festivals in the first three months of the year; Mullet Festival, Midsumma, First Stories, Radical Acts Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival welcome audiences to the venues with a mix of reprogrammed work, First People led stories, and Victorian Arts Calendar favourites.

Following throughout the year, the organisation will support the creation of a vast array of works with new development and inhouse programming including (but not limited to) Associate Artists, She Writes, a Deakin University Partnership, Little Legends and Regional Arts Development and Accommodation Residencies.

Access and inclusion is also a constant driving force behind the creative programming and audience development focus at Theatre Works.

They are in a frequent process of reassessing the venue (highlighted by their 20/21 Glasshouse), programming, and approach to embrace neuro-atypical audiences, people living with disability, mental illness, financial or social disadvantage.

This also includes women, young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, LGBTQIA+ and other community members.

Written by Jean Franco and Guillaume Mélanie, the comedy tells of an irreverent Minister for Youth and Sport deciding to run for President of France without any warning to her staff.

■ New Melbourne theatre company Theatrical presents its inaugural production Little Women the Broadway Musical from November 19-28 at Chapel off Chapel, Prahran.

The show experienced three lockdowns due to the virus pandemic, but admirably persevered to present this show fresh out of the latest lockdown.

A team of more than50 volunteers has worked hard during the lockdown periods to stage this show. Personal sheds became set building workshops, costume designers created the period costumes from their living rooms, cast members learned the show via Zoom with the help of blocking software, and outdoor rehearsals were conducted in public parks when restrictions eased.

Little Women the Broadway Musical is an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's book, telling the story of sisters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they navigate the journey from girlhood to womanhood in Civil War America. The key protagonist, Jo, is an inspiring author whose fierce determination to rise above the expecta-

tions of women in 1860s America drives the story.

Little Women explores themes of sisterhood, women’s lives, and female endeavour in all its many guises. The musical adaptation, with a book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein and music by Jason Howland, was originally staged on Broadway in 2004.

Executive Producer Andrew Gyopar says, “It’s been a monumental effort to get the show to this point. But Melbourne is a creative city and we’re determined to play our part in bringing theatre back to Melbourne audiences as soon as we can.

“Little Women is a story that transcends generations, with its inspiring story of ambition and perseverance. So, it only seemed right for us to bring that kind of drive and perseverance to our approach as a team in bringing this incredible production to life".

What’s On Bad Luck Banging

■ Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (2021) is this year’s winner for best film at the Berlin International Film Festival receiving the prestigious Golden Bear Award.

This art film, directed by Radu Jude, the contemporary and provocative Romanian filmmaker provides Jude the opportunity to reflect on Bucharest society during COVID19 to discuss relevant issues that Romanian society are dealing with.

The work is provocative, often confronting, satirical and humorous. It depicts Romanian society as dystopian. The imaginary society we experience in the film is surreal, bizarre, and very frightening.

It presents in triptych form contemporary Romanian society. In Part One we are introduced to the private erotic sexual world of Emi and her husband who discovered their love making had been uploaded onto the internet.

Understandably, Emi is very distressed and the rest of this first part of the film we find her wandering around the seedy streets of Bucharest.

Emi is on the phone to her husband constantly, dreading the possible consequence that she may lose her job as a teacher in an exclusive school.

The second part is a pseudo-documentary in the form of a movie montage, which puts together visual images which are intended to relate the history of Romania.

The montage intermingles the “documentary” with various grotesque and profane sexual images that makes the observer cringe and demean Romanians.

In the third part Emi must confront the parents of her students, the parents are presented as both judge and jury as to whether or not she is to be dismissed from her duties because of an uploaded sex tape neither she nor her husband had uploaded.

She argues her case brilliantly and the drama here is heightened as we hear from parents variously expressing at times their prejudicial views, their empathy, and their disagreements with either Emi or other parent’s perspectives.

Jude provides us with three different endings. You will need to be open minded and ready for an uncomfortable self-examination of your own prejudices.

Written by Debra Thomas and Ella Roth Barton, WellBless contains spectacle, pole dance, and an in-depth introduction to vaginal steaming while examining the parasitic world of wellness and the flaws in our medical system that allow this trillion-dollar industry to thrive.

At her in-person Soul Convergence, Juniper is ready to unveil her cure-all Miracle Tonic. Packaged as the elixir to ageing, cancer, and even COVID-19, this marvel promises to restore body and soul.

But as millions of Instagram followers flock to the convention there’s a slight glitch; Instafamous cancer-patient Maha (who stopped chemotherapy to follow Juniper’s wellness program) dies onsite.

With Juniper’s world set to unravel, she solicits advice from her team of ‘experts’.

Together, they go to extreme lengths to hide the truth from her followers and she might just get away with it - except that journalist Mindy Flores is asking way too many questions.

Junkies shoot up

■ The Garment District is Gotham’s newest shooting gallery, a disturbing heroin hotspot of addicts booting up in broad daylight.

This life disaster unfolds just steps from high-profile Midtown landmarks such as Macy’s, Madison Square Garden and the sparkling new Moynihan Train Hall.

The block bordered by 35th and 36th streets, and Seventh and Eighth Avenues, is “littered with used needles, broken glass crack pipes, trash, urine, and faeces” as junkies shoot up and dealers brazenly sell drugs, lamented one neighbour on social media. “I’ve personally seen dozens of deals go down. I’ve seen a person OD and nearly die.”

During a single walk around the block last week, sources witnessed three different people injecting needles in their wrists or fingers in the middle of the afternoon.

Each addict sat on the sidewalk or in empty storefronts.

Dozens of other junkies sat or lay nearly comatose, many of the men shirtless, on the same block.

“We are appalled and disgusted by the drug use and other illicit behaviours that are taking place on our sidewalks in Midtown Manhattan and throughout New York City,” Garment District Alliance President Barbara Blair told The Post.

“We have been fighting to put an end to this crisis, however our city officials have unfortunately failed to address the problem and have allowed this public disorder to continue.”

■ Last Friday we said goodbye to Bert Newton. Legend is a word we use too much but in Bert’s case, he was a legend of radio, television and live theatre.

With his passing comes the end of a golden era in entertainment. With partners like Graham Kennedy and Don Lane, Bert continued his career and became Mr Entertainment.

He was the best and we all learnt from Bert. He had one of the sharpest, quick-witted deliveries this country had ever seen.

It is a sad time to reflect on his passing but we should be celebrating the fact that we got to witness his huge talent for so many years. Condolences to Patti and all his family.

X-Men name concern

■ They are some of the most recognizable names in the Marvel cinematic universe but the X-Men are now under criticism from Marvel Studios new president of Physical, Post Production, VFX, and Animation, Victoria Alonso, for having a non-inclusive team moniker.

"I don't know where the future is going. It's funny that people call it the X-Men, there's a lot of female superheroes in that XMen group, so I think it's outdated," she said.

Alonso quickly segued into a discussion of non-movie Marvel universe expansions.

Alonso recently promoted a decision to make perpetual villain Loki "gender fluid”.

But while Marvel could claim the shift is related to a more ‘progressive’ approach to the characters it is more likely that a new X-Persons would solve issues related to pulling a group of characters who already have a successful movie franchise of their own into a more expansive universe of films.

■ Failed presidential assassin John Hinckley Jr. celebrated his impending freedom from court-ordered medication and therapy sessions in a low-key fashion.

Hinckley, 66, spent nearly 90 minutes inside an office building in Williamsburg, Va., where he was photographed walking through the parking lot after getting out of a silver Toyota Avalon sedan.

The would-be killer of then-President Ronald Reagan clutched a baby-blue, surgical-style mask and wore an untucked, short-sleeve, plaid button-down shirt over his portly frame, along with a blue baseball cap, navy slacks and black, orthopaedicstyle shoes.

■ Survivor host Jeff Probst kicked off the newest season of the classic reality television show by asking contestants whether he should retire one of his trademark phrases or not in order to make the show more inclusive.

“We need your guidance on something,” Probst announced to the 18 contestants on Season 41, the first Survivor season filmed since the pandemic began.

“For 20 years I have used one phrase to call people in for challenges,” Probst said.

“Come on in, guys!” the contestants shouted, some smiling and laughing. “Come on in, guys,” Probst agreed.

“Love saying it, it’s part of the show, but I, too, want to be of the moment. My question to you to decide for us: In the context of ‘Survivor,’ is a word like ‘guys’ okay, or is it time to retire that word?”

■ Islamism remains a "first order" security threat and the West should prepare for potential use of biological weapons by extremist groups, former British prime minister Tony Blair said.

The Taliban swept to power in Afghanistan last month as the United States withdrew its troops after a 20-year war, and Britain fears the group's return and the vacuum left by the West's chaotic withdrawal will allow militants from al Qaeda and Islamic State to gain a foothold there.

"Islamism, both the ideology and the violence, is a first order security threat and, unchecked, it will come to us, even if cantered far from us, as 9/11 demonstrated," Blair said in a speech at the RUSI security think tank to mark the twentieth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

Blair said the West needed to assess its vulnerability.

"COVID-19 has taught us about deadly pathogens. Bio-terror possibilities may seem like the realm of science fiction. But we would be wise now to prepare for their potential use by non-state actors," he said.

I denounce my celebrity-ness today. I’m done with it,” O’Neal said. “I don’t want to be in that category. Celebrities are crazy, they really are. Don’t call me that anymore. ■ Disneyland is giving Jessica Rabbit a politically correct makeover as a private eye - ditching her famous low-rise red dress with a trench coat and a fedora - in one of its iconic rides.

Jessica Rabbit is being redesigned to be more empowered and less scantily clad on Roger Rabbit's Car Toon spin ride, Yahoo News reports, as the ride's backstory is updated to make her a private investigator trying to fight a rise in crime.

The ride originally opened in 1994 in Mickey's Toontown section of the Anaheim, California, theme park and featured guests catching a taxi and following Roger Rabbit and Benny the Cab as they race through Toontown looking for Jessica Rabbit, according to Inside the Magic.

But under the park's plans, the ride will get a 'more relevant' reboot with a new plot that features Jessica as a trench coat-wearing private investigator.

'Citing the return of the Toon Patrol Weasels as the main driver behind the recent sharp rise in crime statistics throughout Mickey's Toontown, Jessica Rabbit has determined it is past time to throw her fedora into the ring by starting her own private investigation service,' a poster inside the revamped ride will read. Jack was 6' 2" tall and although he was not a handsome ‘matinee idol’ he was good looking and everybody loved him.

Jack Carson was a great character actor who appeared in more than 90 films.

John Elmer ‘Jack’ Carson was born in Canada in 1910 and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

After graduating from college Jack went to Hollywood to become an actor and initially worked as an extra at the RKO Studios.

His first decent screen role was in 1937 as a service station attendant in but he was not credited in the cast list.

He appeared in many supporting roles over the next four years and was getting radio work on the major networks.

Jack moved to Warner Brothers Studios in 1941 where he got much better roles and became a very popular film star.

He was taken far too young. He was survived by his wife Sandra Jolley and his two children.

3D work at Ian Potter Centre

■ From 3D-printed corals and modular underwriter reef structures, to robotically printed and unknitted architecture, Sampling the Future, a new exhibition at The Ian Potter Centre NGV, reveals some of the extraordinary ways that advanced technologies and manufacturing are shaping our near and distant future.

Sampling the Future showcases new work by leading experimental and speculative designers whose practices bridge the worlds of design, technology, science and philosophy in order to imagine how and why objects, structures and buildings are designed and made.

These include speculative architects Roland Snooks and Leanne Zilka, Alice Springs-based designer Elliat Rich, Sydney-based duo Kyoko Hashimoto and Guy Keulemans, and Melbourne duo Georgia Nowak and Eugene Perepletchikov, among others.

Divided into two thematic sections – the near future and the distant future – the exhibition features large-scale architectural installations, thought provoking design objects, as well as film and sound-based works.

Designers exploring the ‘near future’ present works that combat climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, while those exploring the ‘distant future’ draw on history, mythology and philosophy to explore our relationship to and reliance on natural resources, as well as the central role that materials have played in shaping the tools and artefacts of human civilisation.

Exhibition closes February 6.

with Peter Kemp veil his latest series of works for the exhibition titled Experimental Hell (Atomosphaeram).

The exhibition features largescale silkscreen works on raw aluminium, a newly recorded album, and a noise performance, which will bring the three primary areas of Fusinato’s practice together in a single project.

Rose Nolan’s monumental new floor work transforms the upper gallery space, featuring her distinctive reduced palette of red and white and use of text.

Titled Parlour Games, the exhibition comprises a large carpet and mirrored panels and continues Nolan’s exploration of the possibilities of painting, shifting her work from the wall to the floor to inhabit a new space.

TV in Thailand

■ TV networks in Thailand are running public service spots appealing to people to recycle plastic drink bottles to be made into personal protective equipment (PPE).

The suits are used by Buddhist Monks who are responsible for burying the dead caused by COVID. Eighteen plastic bottles produce one PPE suit, so there is truth in the ageold adage of turning trash into treasure by saving lives and helping the environment at the same time.

■ News has surfaced of an alleged white-collar misappropriation of funds in excess of a million bucks from a international media related agency.

Funds allegedly purchased speed boats, house renovations and some high living. The exec alleged to be involved had just been promoted within the company to assume a job in Europe on a huge salary.

Stars: *** Review: One-location thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer) about a demoted police officer assigned to a 911 emergency call dispatch desk, but when he receives an emergency phone call from a kidnapped woman, the situation escalates quickly and without warning.

Faithful remake of the outstanding 2018 Danish psychological thriller has lots to offer, however, if you have seen the original there are little if any surprises in store, nonetheless, producer and star Jake Gyllenhaal gives a standout blood-sweat-and-tears performance as the lone emergency phone operator trying to come to terms with his own personal demons as the distress call escalates to its startling conclusion, capturing every facial movement to great effect along the way.

As in the original version, director Antoine Fuqua keeps it tight and lean as the utilizing the claustrophobic setting to keep the tension high, and in addition, he allows no unnecessary excess to pad-out, hamper or prolong proceedings, and even though it is not superior to the original (and for those who can’t compare), it ultimately delivers a tautly wound, compelling and enjoyable thrill ride of anguish, anxiety and determination that primarily (with only minor changes) remains dutifully steadfast and unwavering to an already established European classic.

Length: 114 Minutes.

Stars: *** Review: As a professional assassin, a mother was forced to abandon her daughter and go on the run, now years later, the daughter has grown up into a hit-woman, and after a high-stake mission spins out of control, putting an innocent 8-year-old girl in the middle of a gang war, the daughter has no choice but to go rogue, which ultimately leads her back to her mother and her former sidekicks, who all join forces in an avenging war.

The one great thing that can be said about this film is the title, a Quentin Tarantino-esque inspired wanna-be ride that also filters legendary action filmmakers such as Sergio Leone, John Woo, Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) and Guy Ritchie, to name a few, and this works okay for the most part, but not as a whole, nonetheless, flaws aside this is a wild, cookie, quirky and ridiculously entertaining ultraviolent ;girl-power ; guilty pleasure that is sure to achieve a cult and ensure future adventures.

The top notch cast includes Lena Heady (Game of Thrones), Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tomorrow Never Dies), Angela Bassett (Mission Impossible: Fallout, Black Panther), and veteran Paul Giamatti as the villain of the piece, however, it is Doctor Who; Jumanji; and Guardians of the Galaxy; star Karen Gillan with an 8 year old girl in tow that holds the screen throughout with grace and aplomb amongst the acrobatic carnage and mounting body count.

Aided by surreal colour palates and idiosyncratic set design, the end result is darkly comic and twisted thrill ride, an altogether imperfect and absurdist slice of mayhem for action junkies that for the most part achieves what it sets out to do, but those looking for intelligence, subtlety, multi-layered character development and logic may be disappointed ... this is a milkshake that need a few more turns in the mixer and a bit more flavour and a touch of malt.

From director Kim Jee-woon (The Quiet Family, The Foul King, ATale Of Two Sisters,ABittersweet Life, The Age Of Shadows), this ingenious sci-fi/drama/thriller (based on the popular webtoon by Hong Jac-ga) should keep viewers totally enthralled.

Beginning in 1990, we see a young Lee Se-won (Kim Geon-U) at school, unable to relate to, or interact with, his fellow classmates.

After a classroom incident, Sewon’s mother (Oh Yeon-A) is forced to seek out professional help for her unsociable son, and it is discovered that his brain is unusually structured, causing Se-won to crave research and retain memory, while not being able to understand empathy or emotion, which is perfectly illustrated when he sees his mother die in a harrowing car accident.

Years later, Se-won (now played

by Lee Sun-kyun, who co-starred in the 2019 Oscar-winning film, Parasite) is now a brilliant doctor, looking at how memories and experiences may be transferred from one mind to another.

His experiments succeed, but not in the way he expects. When he is visited by two police detectives and a private detective over the murder of a man he doesn’t know, Se-won must use this new, dangerously unreliable technology to try and solve the case where he is seen as the main suspect.

Jo Jae-Hong’s adaptation intelligently moves between different genres, but never allows them to separate or jar, while the entire cast play their parts to perfection (Sewon is a fascinating creation).

Harnessing all these elements is director Kim, who again shows what an accomplished film-maker he is (it’s such a pity that the only Hollywood project offered to him was the forgettable Schwarzenegger vehicle, The Last Stand), and he moves from drama, thriller, sci-fi, and even moments of comedy, with masterful ease.

It comes as no surprise from a director who has helmed films as polar opposite as the grandly entertaining The Good, The Bad, The Weird and the graphically horrific I Saw The Devil.

Kim also displays what a brilliant camera eye he has, as he stylishly and thoughtfully uses patterns, structures, colour and light in a metaphorical and symbolic manner. With Squid Game having taken the world by storm, this first-rate Korean series couldn’t have arrived at a better time, and will hopefully achieve similar worldwide success and praise.

Midnight Mass

■ (MA). Seven episodes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Though it doesn’t really bring anything new to the genre, and the plot turns are too easy to see coming, this new series from film-maker Mike Flanagan still manages to engage and absorb, thanks to the director’s genuine love for place, character, and most of all, the genre itself.

The story unfolds on the quiet (some might saying decaying) Crockett Island, home to a community which has relied on fishing as its trade for decades.

Many have left the island for the mainland, so the remaining locals are surprised when a new, younger priest, Father Paul (Hamish Linklater) arrives on their doorstep, replacing the dementia-ridden Monsignor Pruitt who had led the townsfolk’s Sunday services for many, many years.

Also returning home is Riley (Zach Gilford), who has just been released from prison after serving a lengthy sentence for killing a woman in a drunk-driving accident.

It doesn’t take long after these two have arrived that strange occurrences begin to happen, occurrences that will affect the entire town.

Flanagan shows great confidence in his handling of the material, after he successfully managed the monumental feat of adapting Doctor Sleep for the big screen, the follow-up novel to one of Stephen King’s most beloved and popular stories, The Shining, which itself became an iconic film in 1980, directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick.

King’s influence is noticeable throughout Midnight Mass, particularly Salem’s Lot, but also Needful Things and The Stand.

There are also nods to renowned directors such as John Carpenter, George A. Romero, Kathryn Bigelow, Ti West, Ted Kotcheff, Michael Mann and Gary Sherman.

Flanagan regulars are again in the cast, including Kate Seigel and Henry Thomas.

Despite its rather derivative plot and lack of surprises, Midnight Mass is solid entertainment.

If you do enjoy this, please watch Tobe Hooper’s excellent 1979 TV mini-series adaptation of King’s Salem’s Lot, as it will make for a compelling companion piece.

■ Many performing arts events had to be cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19. Australian Chamber Choir isloyally committed to continue to offer their concert program while adhering to restrictions. These concerts have been presented by live streaming in a church setting.

The first of these concerts was Angels, providing a shining jewel to watch, especially during lockdown.

Restrictions allowed for only a small number in the space and four choristers performed the program professionally and comfortably.

The lovely voices of the four singers, Cornelia Elmelid (soprano), Elizabeth Anderson (alto), Oliver Crofts (tenor), Lucas Wilson-Richter (bass) blended perfectly, treating the virtual audience to glorious music presented in a perfect environment.

There were no issues with the online format for these experienced and respected performers.

“The angel, a supernatural protector or guide, is a symbol of hope” (ACC program). This truly sublime and uplifting performance included a program of works by Palestrina (Italy) Purcell, Tye (England), Tomkins (Wales), Verdelot (France) and included a new arrangement of the delightful Angels We Have Heard on High, reminding us that the Christmas season is approaching.

This livestream concert lost

Austen Con

■ Melbourne produced glorious weather for the Fourth Annual Austen Con. Bonnets, top hats, feathers, shawls, fans, cravats, tailcoats and chemises were on show elegantly parading the gardens and buildings of Abbotsford Convent.

A range of fascinating workshops and presentations and all things Austen filled the time of conference attendees.

Jane Austen was a prolific writer, possessed with what the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge described as "scribblomania".

In addition to her novels, Austen wrote many letters, a lost art in the digital age.

Kelly Lock teaches us the intricacies of letter writing using nib and ink.

In her novels, Austen describes women's late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century lives—the marriage market, the education bias, the attainment of "ideal" Regency feminine skills, stifling social conventions—presented with a rich, satirical subtext.

With the success of the show Bridgerton, and its racially integrated alternative history, Lauren Burke and Lydia Craig explored race in Regency England.

Kelly Gardiner and Shamini Kumar unpacked the British East India Company and its ties to colonialism.

Hannah Aroni and James Matthews conjectured on the neurodivergence of Mr Darcy.

Eighteenth-century dancing, a cabaret, and escape room were just a few of the other activities on offer.

All in all, another great day with Jane Austen.

The Duke

■ The Duke is a quirky film about a retired taxi driver, Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent), who in 1961 steals Francisco Goya’s painting The Duke of Wellington from

the British National Gallery. Based on the true story of the gallery’s first and only theft of an artwork, Bunton, incensed at the exorbitant price of £140,000 the British government paid for the Goya, decides on a whim to steal the painting on principle.

The court case that followed caused a sensation and a change in the law.

Broadbent is excellent as the gormless Bunton stealing ‘some half-baked portrait by a Spanish drunk’.

Bunton is no cat burglar. In fact, it is hard to imagine him carrying out the heist without being detected.

Nevertheless, the painting is stolen and subsequently returned.

In between, bumbling Scotland Yard detectives speculate in press conferences on who might have pulled off such a grand heist: an artful criminal gang or international jewel thieves.

Helen Mirren plays Bunton’s long-suffering wife, Dorothy, but the star is Broadbent and his quixotic quest to force the government to fund his campaign for free TV licences for veterans and the elderly.

Directed by Roger Michell, the film has an old-world quality reminiscent of the great British comedy dramas. It effortlessly captures the dreariness of postwar London just before the explosion of the sights and sounds of the swinging sixties.

RV renews equestrian partnership

■ Racing Victoria has renewed its partnership with Equestrian Victoria by extending its Off The Track naming rights partnership for the 2021-22 season.

The mutually beneficial partnership has seen an increased number of Off The Track horses compete in EV events since the introduction of RV’s Off The Track Program in 2012.

In more recent times, while COVID has reduced the number of competitions that have taken place, demand for off-the-track thoroughbreds remains on the rise.

Off The Track is now making up 40 per cent of the total horses participating in the Horse Trials last season, and over 15 per cent of horses competing at the 2021 Victorian Jumping Titles.

As a key driver for growing demand for the thoroughbred in the equestrian community, RV’s Off The Track Program will continue to support some of EV’s major events.

This included the Spring Horse Trials that were run on October 22.

The Barastoc Horse of the Year will be run in February next year, and the Melbourne International 3 Day Event in June next year.

The Young Ambassador Program is due to be run next June, offering increased opportunities for riders of the off-the-track horses.

The Young Ambassador Program sees State finalists for each disciplined (jumping, showing, dressage and eventing), attend as intensive assessment and training weekend in June 22.

At the end of which, four winners are chosen to be the ‘faces’ of their respective disciplines, based on their sportsmanship, performance, leadership qualities and contribution to the sport.

Racing Victoria will continue to support dedicated Off The Track categories and prizes for riders competing at EV major championships and regional events across Victoria.

This will include EV affiliated horse trials and show jumping events, as well as the addition of 10 EV affiliated dressage events, which will recognise the Best Performed OTT in preliminary classes.

This offers the chance for more retired horses to be recognised for excelling in their careers.

In addition, new jumping classes have been added to the roster of EV affiliated show jumping events, increasing the opportunities for the off-the-trackers to be rewarded across various levels.

Future opportunities for EV members who own an off-the-track thoroughbred, have also been increased, thanks to the launch of Racing Victoria’s new on-line post-racing platform, Off The Track community in May this year.

Already well supported by the Victorian Equestrian community, more than 2000 off-thetrack thoroughbred owners and riders have claimed their horses on the platform.

To not only assist RV Victoria, in tracing former racehorses across Victoria, but to access a variety of exclusive content and educational tools to support their passion for the thoroughbred.

Big Cup Week

■ Despite COVID interfering with race crowds over the Cup Carnivals, the Victoria Racing Club were happy with the overall results.

While restrictions kept the total to 30,000, for the four days of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, a number of things went very well.

Over the four days at Flemington, more than 6000 jobs for the events and hospitality industries was a shot in the arm.

They also broke the live streaming record for the Lexus Melbourne Cup. There were 652,000unique users of the live streaming.

Nearly two million Australians watched the great mare, Verry Elleegant, win the Cup.

■ At last it appears something may be done through Racing Victoria to get the rest of the racing media journalists to be able to enter the Press Room at the major tracks.

It is envisaged that Saturda,y November 27, could be the date that most of us can get back.

This yet to ratified, but we are all hoping.

Our VRMA annual meeting via Zoom was held on September 27. As an Association we have been unable to operate as usual, but the Black Caviar Scholarship was awarded to Justin Darcy and Tom Happell. Two outstanding applicants, and they are keen to get on with it.

The Roy Higgins and Darren Gauci Medals will be presented at our Personality of the Year Dinner at the Emerald Hotel on the first Monday in February next year.

Former number one caller with Racing Victoria, ABC, and Sky Channel for many years, and course commentator, Greg Miles, became the 10th Life Member in the 79th year of the Victoria Racing Media Association.

One of the greatest commentators to grace the scene, Greg is a worthy winner and a great man.

Greg said, after receiving his award, that it was humbling to receive the award as the VRMA has been very dear to him.

Also, a big thank you, goes to top racing man with Racing.com, Warren Huntly,he will serve his final year as Chairman of the Association this year.

Aussie success in New Zealand Cup

■ The biggest event in New Zealand racing whether it be gallops or trots – the standing start $631,500 IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup was held at Addington Raceway Christchurch on Tuesday November 10 and Melbourne owners Merv and Meg Butterworth were victors after their high quality 4Y0 American Ideal-Lively Nights stallion Copy That greeted the judge.

Trained at Pukekohe (Auckland) by veteran Ray Green who under Covid conditions was unable to make the trip south, Copy That driven by Canterbury based Blair Orange stepped cleanly from outside the front line with Orange having no hesitation in sending him forward four and five wide to take over from noted sit/sprinter Classie Brigade (barrier four) entering the straight on the first occasion of the 3200 metre journey easing three wide as favourite Self Assured (10m) settled mid-field.

Although many of his opponents made runs early in the piece to gain a more forward position, there was no pressure being applied to Copy That which relaxed beautifully in the run.

As is tradition, the runs from the highly fancied runners went forward approaching the bell, favourite Self Assured from five back in the running line was the first to move, with roughie Laver (one/one) pulling out ahead of him rather sharply to momentarily race uncovered until Self Assured crossed him only to give the open spot to another North Islander South Coast Arden which had followed him forward after trailing from the start, giving Self Assured one/one cover for the final circuit.

Sitting quiet as a church mouse on the final bend, Copy That when asked to extend by Orange on straightening, coasted to the wire two and a half lengths ahead of Self Assured which eased wide in the straight, with South Coast Arden battling on gamely for third a neck back.

Roughie Steel The Show after an easy time three back the markers was fourth two lengths away while Classie Brigade ran his usual honest race for fifth after using the passing lane off the back of the winner to no avail.

Returning a mile rate of two minutes even, Copy That ran his last half mile in 54.8 seconds with a final quarter of 27.5.

Cobram starter

■ Cobram on the Murray started off the week’s racing on Monday November 8 with a well patronized nine event card.

Echuca trainer Susan Hunter’s 5Y0 Majestic Son-Dizzyinterest gelding Partytime was a tough victor of the Xmas Party @ Cobram Harness 17 December Trotters Mobile over 2170 metres.

Raced by Susan and husband Shane Gloury, Partytime driven by Bendigo based Rod Lakey raced exposed throughout from gate five as speedy gelding Starlight Storm led as usual from gate three.

Taking a slender lead on turning, Partytime held a margin all the way up the running to defeat a game Lifeinthebalance which spent most of the race trapped three wide from gate three by 2.3 metres in a mile rate of 2-02.

Honest mare Kilarney Heidi was third 8 metres away after trailing the runner up home from mid-field in the last lap. It was Partytime’s third success in 16 outings.

■ Bendigo based Alex (Alby) Ashwood took the honors for the day after driving three well supported winners including two from his own stable trained in partnership with Tayla French.

Six year old Somebeachsomewhere-Golden Slippa gelding Beach Wreck was the first to arrive taking the Xerri Evans Cobram Pace over 2170 metres.

Immediately away from inside the second row to settle three back in the running line after Wild Imagination flew the gate from position six to lead, Beach Wreck was shunted back through the field when a number of runners took turns of going forward, ending up five back.

Going forward three wide solo in the final circuit to be outside the pacemaker on the home turn, Beach Wreck proved too strong for his rivals, scoring by 7.8 metres in advance of You Ninety Two out wide from the tail, with Wild Imagination holding down third a half head away.

Raced by a massive syndicate, Talent Agent coasted to the wire 9.4 metres ahead of La Captain (one/two), with Cheez coming from the tail to be a half neck away third. The mile rate 159.6.

■ Marong part-owner/trainer Terry Gange gave Ashwood the middle leg of his treble when 4Y0 Major Bronski-Czarina Katerina gelding Beau Bronski snared the 1670 metre $9,000 Benstud Pace Final.

After beginning fast from gate two Beau Bronski was unable to cross heat winner Im Harvey Specter inside him as Mister Cole after being trapped wide from outside the front line parked outside the pacemaker.

Shuffled back a spot after Miss Kontiki after trailing Mister Cole to race uncovered Beau Bronski ended up three back in the moving line.

When Mister Cole eased three wide approaching the home turn, Beau Bronski took his spot before angling wide in the straight and finished on determinedly to prevail by a half neck in 1-56.1 from Mister Cole and Im Harvey Specter who was third 3.7 metres away.

Terang triumph

■ Strathdale trainer Justin Brewin and Great Western’s Kerryn Manning enjoyed a big night at Terang on Tuesday with Brewin winning a double and Kerryn chalking up a driving treble on the pair and one for Ballarat based Michael Cole.

The first of the Brewin winners was 4Y0 Betterthancheddar-Cullens Queen gelding Colby Art which led throughout from the pole in the Murfett/Whiting Terang Maiden Pace over 1680 metres to account for Keayang Treasure (one/ one) and Murdoch from mid-field in a 2-00.7 mile rate.

The margins 6.6 metres x a half neck.

Stablemate Crossroader, a 6Y0 Roll With JoeMuckinbar Lady gelding showed sparkling speed to lead from gate five in the 2180 metre Mt Noorat Freighters Pace, defeating a deathseating Mister Rebel by 2 metres in 2-01.5, with Security Check 5.1 metres away third after coming from near last. The mile rate 2-01.5.

Six year old Fling It-Biggies gelding Wingman Fling gave Kerryn her third success for the night when victorious in the Morsbearings Warrnambool Trotters Mobile over 2180 metres.

Leading out from gate two, Wingman Fling was eased to allow Claudy An Gus (gate six) to assume control and after enjoying a cosy trip, used the sprint lane to prevail by a head in a rate of 2-04.9 from Sunny Petite (four back the markers) which flashed late after getting clear on turning. Claudy An Gus held third 7.8 metres away.

■ A local winner on the night was Jilliby Fernando for trainer Paddy Lee and reinswoman Codi Rauchenberger. Beginning swiftly from gate five to lead, Captain TreacherousMetromint colt Jilliby Fernando was untroubled to run out a 11.2 metre victor over Gotta Smudge (three back the markers) and Reactor Factor four back who was 4.5 metres back. The mile rate 1-58.1.

Geelong winner

■ Geelong raced on Wednesday and 4Y0 Angus Hall-Miss Warbucks gelding Im Daddy Warbucks returned to the winners list after taking the Yabby Dam Farms Trotters Handicap over 2570 metres.

Trained and driven by Riddell’s Chris Lang for a host of well known harness enthusiasts, Im Daddy Warbucks began safely from 10 metres as lone front marker Shield Maiden led before going off stride approaching the first turn allowing Christmas Babe (10m) to assume control leaving Im Daddy Warbucks in the open.

Gaining cover at the bell after Leanne Leeann went forward from three back to park uncovered at the bell, Im Daddy Warbucks after easing three wide on the home turn coasted to the wire 1.6 metres in advance of the fast finishing Sonny Brooke (one/three – three back the markers home turn), with Christmas Babe battling away gamely for third 1.9 metres back. The mile rate 2-06.1.

■ Ballarat’s Michael Cole raced, trained and driven 5Y0 Auckland Reactor-The Summer Wind 5Y0 gelding Auckland Red caused a major upset in the 1609 metre Geelong High Speed Racing Pace (third leg of the quaddie) after winning at odds of $151.

Starting from gate two on the second line, Auckland Red possied four back in the running line as another roughie Cornish Smuggler led from gate four. Moving forward three wide solo in the last lap, Auckland Red sprinted brilliantly to lead on the final bend and score by 2.2 metres in a rate of 1-57.2 from Rockingwithsierra which trailed the weakening leader.

Rocco Americana after galloping shortly after the start when racing parked before recovering and again occupying the “death seat” was third 1.7 metres away.

■ Toolern Vale’s John Justice recorded an easy victory in the Winning Post Restaurant Pace over 2100 metres with 3Y0 Mach Three-Desire Mhe 3Y0 gelding Helluva. A kiwi import raced by loyal owner Mark Gurry, Helluva led throughout from the pole and after an easy time, had plenty in reserve to greet the judge by 7.9 metres in a rate of 1-57.7 over Major Meister which trailed. Mr Bohannon (one/one – three wide home turn) was third 14.9 metres back.

Thursday double

■ Thursday was double day with Maryborough racing in the afternoon and Kilmore at night.

As expected there were a lot of very short priced favourites at Maryborough when heats of the Breeders Crown for trotters (two and three) occupied the program. The winners being – Plymouth Chubb ($1.04), Courage Stride ($1.22), Keayang Chucky ($11.00), Kyvalley Hotspur ($1.20), Sheza Pleasure ($3.10), Queen Elida ($1.45), Parisian Artiste ($1.80), Keayang Ninja ($2.50), Illawong Benita ($5.00 and Tough Love ($2.20).

Kilmore meeting

■ At Kilmore, eight year old Kiwi bred Mach Three-Copper Beach gelding Zadaka ($22.30) who’s last victory had been in the Ararat Pacing Cup in February this year, returned to form when successful in the MC Security Pace over 2180 metres.

Trained at Charlton by Greg Norman for major clients the Cormack family, Zedaka driven by another Charltonian Ryan Sanderson settled last along the markers after being eased from gate four as Jean Luc led from gate two before handing over with around a mile to travel to Would You Mind which had weaved a passage inbetween runners from the extreme draw.

There was action aplenty through the middle stages as Rackemup Tigerpie (one/two) went forward to assume control racing for the bell, with San Carlo following him forward to race exposed for the final circuit.

Sent forward four wide in the back straight on the final occasion, Zedaka although four wide on the final bend raced to San Carlo which had gained the upper hand on turning and in an exciting finish, gained the judges nod by 3.2 metres, returning a mile rate of 2-00.9.

Partly owned and trained at Cudgee by Paddy Meade, Herbertson wasted no time in sending Rainbowsnpearls forward from the extreme draw on the back of Tex Goes Bang (gate two on the second row) to park in the open at the bell outside the leader Keayang Remi (gate five).

Pouring on the pressure prior to the home turn, Rainbowsnpearls surged to the front and raced clear with a winning margin on straightening.
