The good news is that the public will be admitted to the meetings to be held in the New Year Yea and St Pats Racing Club President Denis Smith confirmed the unusual arrangements, made to comly with COVID-19 regulations. “Whilst Yea & St Pats Racing Club isdisappointed not to be accepting crowds this coming Saturday all is in readiness for six races for prize money at a COVID-safe event that owners are allowed to attend,” Mr Smith told The Local Paper. “A highlight of the day will be the time honoured Reddrops Foodworks Sister Olive Handicap over 3000 metres, the longest distance raced on the picnic circuit. “With the event being held so close to Christmas the committee felt it would be unfair to compromise the amenity of our volunteers, many of whom are elderly. “Should one of our crowd who attended the races report COVID-19 symptoms on the Monday or Tuesday and subsequently be diagnosed as COVID-19 positive , all attendees would be required to isolate and be tested , effectively on or over the Christmas period. The timing of the Yea meeting is unique in that aspect. “The club ishopeful of welcoming crowds of 1000 or more at the remaining two meetings on Saturday, January 23 for the Nutrien Ag Solutions Yea Cup and the Larkfield St Pats Cup on Sunday, February 21. At the moment, despite the headlines in the major dailies of ‘1000 people at the races’, the fine print decrees that all of these “1000 people” need to be sat and remain at the one point throughout the event, moving only for essential toilet breaks etc. “The onus is on the clubs to enforce these rules on top of social distancing. With people now being allowed to stand and drink at bars

● Denis Smith and the social distancing down to two square metres per person, we hope that the rules will be changed sooner rather than later. “Anyone wishing to have a bet on the picnic races can go to Picnicbet.com where picnic bookmaker Peter Bon has established an online presence. “Details for people wishing to become club members or attend the last two meetings will appear soon on the Yea & St Pats website at countryracingvictoria.com”
