■ The Lexus Melbourne Cup National Sweepstake Tour came to Alexandra on (Oct. 23). Rather than the grand roadshow experience of previous years, it was a virtual tour, zoomed into various clubrooms and private homes into small socially distanced groups and individuals. Joe McGrath chaired the meeting and Sheila Laxton, trainer of Ethereal, 2001 Cup winner, was ambassador.

Sheila spoke about her love of all things horses that grew out of her time in pony club and cross country eventing and finally lead to her training thoroughbreds. Sheila broke the mould as the first female trainer to win the Cup and kept her horses fresh by using cross training methods. The way Ethereal stormed home to win the 2001 Cup clearly demonstrated her training methods worked.

Despite the absence of the physical Melbourne Cup Road Show, the combined bid to be part of the tour and for the opportunity to have a horse in the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweepstake has been a great experience for the four local picnic clubs. Mansfield, Merton, Yea and Alexandra worked well together to make the tour a success and have been brought closer together by the experience. The chance to win $50,000 for local not-for-pfit charities of our choice is a bonus and Alexandra Community Hub has been thanked for agreeing to act as banker if/ should/when we win. Shortly after the official draw of Melbourne Cup barriers on Saturday the clubs will know which horse they have drawn in the sweepstake .

■ Alexandra Football-Netball Club met last Wednesday (Oct. 21) for the Annual General Meeting. After presentation of the Club's 2020 Financial Report and President's Report all executive positions were declared vacant with the following appointments subsequently made: President - Ray Steyger, Senior VicePresident - Sam Kidd, Junior Vice-President - Peter McKenzie, Treasurer - Ray Steyger and Secretary - Kylie Cairns.

A big thank you to Darren Ritchie who stepped down from the executive due to work commitments after having made a significant contribution to the Club. A number of enthusiastic people have pledged to assist the Club on the Committee and if anyone is interested in joining the Club in any capacity, please don't hesitate in contacting Ray Steyger on 5772 2627, everyone is welcome.

The Club was also pleased to have a number of coaching applications which were discussed and the following appointments made for the 2021 season: reserves Scott Ferrier with assistant Michael Coombs, senior coach Nick Wal already appointed. Senior netball coaches are pending whilst junior netball coaches appointed were Under 11 Emma Kidd, Under 13 Kelly Golland, Under 15 Penny Van Lierop. Junior football coach appointments for Under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 teams are also pending subject to confirmation from AFL Goulburn Murray andAFL Outer East of the proposed alterations to the age groups, due in coming weeks.

As Small Business Minister, the State Opposition has found Ms Pulford’s Archilles Heel. Her weakness is an inability to get her Ministry to deliver detailed jobs done on time.

It could be her downfall.

■ Shadow Attorney-General Edward O’Donohue nailed Ms Pulford in State Parliament this month: “ I have had a number of constituents contact me regarding their first-round applications for the Business Support Fund. They have had their applications rejected for reasons they believe are not correct,” Mr O’Donohue said.

“I note the Ombudsman is now investigating almost 550 complaints regarding similar issues. I have in recent days had a number of small business owners contact me regarding round three of the Business Support Fund.

“Despite this being the third round of the fund, there appears to be a number of issues with this process still, and the 10-day turnaround that many were promised is not eventuating.

“These grants are the difference in some businesses surviving or closing down, and Business Victoria does not seem to be able to assist these businesses with the issues that have been raised or provide any certainty or hope of when they will be.

“Minister, what are you doing to ensure businesses are being assessed accurately and quickly to ensure the support is being received as quickly as possible? “:The Federal Government has been able to do it. They got JobKeeper and other supports into the economy immediately. The Victorian Government should be able to do it as well.”

A petition was tabled at last week’s Mitchell Shire Council meeting regarding Burke and Wills track upgrades. The petition requests Council to allocate funding to improve the condition of the Burke and Wills Track between Boundary Rd (disused-Shire boundary) and McDonalds Lane. Users of this road section include locals learning to drive, police driver training, service providers to businesses, people travelling to local wineries and to attend events and sports, school buses, chartered tourist buses, and self-driving tourists as well as local residents and B&B providers.

Kilmore residents have been praised in State Parliament by Northern Victoria MLC, Tania Maxwell: “I want to give a massive shoutout to the residents of Kilmore and how they have responded to the recent coronavirus cases in their community. The co-operation and excellent record keeping of the proprietor and staff at the Oddfellows Cafe, their close contacts and others potentially exposed to the virus are a demonstration of how a targeted local and proportionate response to containing cases is indeed possible. It is a demonstration of the capacity of local businesses to continue to operate in the Coronavirus environment. It is a demonstration of people coming forward to be tested if there is a reasonable need. It is a demonstration of how people can and will comply with a reasonable request to selfisolate. Actions often speak louder than words, and I commend this community and their targeted and proportionate actions that prevented a case from becoming an enormous outbreak.”

Murrindindi Council has received news that grants have been approved for more than $2.4 million to support the renewal of important road infrastructure including the widening of Snobs Creek Rd Eildon, the renewal of bridges on Break O’day Rd at Glenburn and Court St at Yea, and the replacement of the single lane bridge on Yarck Rd Gobur with a two-lane bridge.

Mitchell Shire’s mental health challenges has been discussed in State Parliament by Northern Victorian MLC Tania Maxwell. “In Mitchell Shire in my electorate 75 per cent of mental illnesses in residents develop before the age of 25.

Around 7 per cent of people, as opposed to 3.9 per cent statewide, are assessed at very high risk of developing poor mental health, and 14.8 per cent of people, as opposed to 12.6 per cent statewide, report high or very high psychological distress.

Ms Maxwell continued: “Like in many other parts of northern Victoria, these problems are exacerbated by a lack of access to appropriate and accessible mental health services, workforce shortages, poor visibility of service options, lack of public transport and limited early intervention and integration.

I therefore ask: what actions will the government be taking to address each of the six key mental health priorities listed on page 10 of Mitchell Shire Council’s official advocacy document for 2020?”

Trail use increases ■ Yarra Ranges Council is working to maintain safety standards for all trail users by installing six eco-counters on the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail.

The counters identify the number of pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders using the trail, peak use times and the direction people are travelling.

The Trail has seen about a 49 per cent increase in use compared to the same time last year.

During COVID-19 restrictions there has been an increase in foot traffic, and a 52 per cent reduction in the number of cyclists.

Council is expecting the trail network to be particularly busy once Stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions ease and the weather improves in spring and summer.

The Yarra Ranges trail network is made up of more than 200km of paths and trails and includes the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail and Yarra Valley Trail which are heavily used by pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists.

With an expected increase in trail use and to keep the trails safe and enjoyable for everyone Council has developed a Trail Etiquette Campaign.

Local Briefs Broadford fatality

■ Police and emergency services were called to Broadford on Friday morning (Oct. 23)following reports a car struck a tree.

It is believed a van was travelling north on the Hume Freeway when it left the roadway and struck a tree about 8.40am The male driver died at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the van.

Northbound lanes of the Hume Freeway were closed as police processed the scen.e Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Plea for timber

■ Tim Quilty, MLC for Northern Victoria (Liberal Democrats), has made a plea in State Parliament for the timber industry: “ At least the faintest glimmer of hope that surely one day the lockdown will end. There will be a chance to resurrect lives and businesses from the ashes,” Mr Quilty said.

“However, timber industry workers in the north-east do not have even that glimmer. The Andrews Government ban on timber operations in Victoria will be permanent.

“This sustainable, renewable industry will be destroyed. These jobs are valuable, productive and efficient. They are not make work or fake work like the packages we get from government programs and packages.

“The owner of Walkers Sawmill in Corryong has described the transition compensation payments as a joke. Mills have access to a $100,000 grant, but a softwood retool would cost this mill more than $3 million and would produce an inferior softwood product. “Minister, how many jobs will be lost because of the Andrews Governmenttimber ban?” Mr Quilty asked.

Towards recovery: CEO ■ Murrindindi Shire Acting CEO Michael Chesworth spoke about the possibility of further announcements concerning the further easing of restrictions in Victoria.

“This will be welcome news to our community which has collectively contributed to these low numbers by diligently abiding by the directions of the Chief Health Officer,” Mr Chesworth said.

“It will also hopefully be welcome news for our businesses, particularly those in the hospitality sector which has borne the brunt of the economic downturn that has resulted from this pandemic.

“As we approach the coming summer we must now prepare to carefully balance the need to keep our community and our visitors safe, whilst continuing to support the careful ‘opening up’ of everything this wonderful Shire offers.

“To this end our officers have been developing plans to activate outdoor dining opportunities in our townships.

“This has, and continues to involve working with many of our businesses on approvals to expand outdoor dining and preparing plans to install additional communal dining facilities in some of our public spaces,” Mr Chesworth said.

$100,000 pay rise?

■ Craig Lloyd was being paid between $260,000-$270,000 per year as Murrindindi Shire’s CEO, the Council’s Annual Report reveals.

Simon Overland was being paid between $360,000-$370,000 as CEO at Whittlesea City Council, prior to his departure on December 10 last year, whilst on indefinite leave.

Municipal observers say it would be reasonable to expect that Mr Lloyd, who moved from Murrindindi to Whittlesea earlier this month, would start on a similar package to that of Mr Overland.

Mr Lloyd’s new weekly pay packet would be $7115, more than $1000 per day.

This would represent a pay rise of $100,000 per year - or about an extra $2000 per week.

Whittlesea Council is the fourth largest municipality in Victoria. It has a $215 million annual budget, and 1100 staff.

In the past year, Murrindindi Council had three senior officers each paid up to $210,000 per year. These were named as Michael Chesworth, Vito Albicini and Shavaun Brown.

A further five senior Council staff members were paid between $150,000-$211,000 per year, the Annual Report revealed.

Fire prevention slashing program

Rail works ramped up ■ The State Government’s work to remove two dangerous and congested level crossings at Mooroolbark and Lilydale will ramp up over summer.

The level crossings at Manchester Rd in Mooroolbark and Maroondah Hwy in Lilydale clog roads and put lives at risk, with 13 crashes in the past decade and one tragic fatality.

More than 53,000 vehicles use these crossings each day and the boom gates can be down for up to a quarter of the two-hour morning peak.

Major construction to remove these death trap level crossings by 2022, build rail bridges and new stations for Mooroolbark and Lilydale will start in December, with buses replacing trains between Ringwood and Lilydale from December 11-20 and some local road closures with traffic detours in place.

Murrindindi Matters

■ In preparation for the forthcoming fire season, Murrindindi Shire Council began its Fire Prevention Slashing Program on October 19.

Murrindindi Shire's Acting CEO Michael Chesworth said the commencement of the Program in October is consistent with Council's approach to fire management in recent years, which has been well received by the community.

“Our contractors have started slashing in Alexandra and Eildon, and will then move on to the Taggerty, Yarck, Molesworth, Yea and Highlands areas at the end of the month,” Mr Chesworth said.

“As always, we kick off our slashing program in the north of the Shire, which dries off earlier than the southern parts.

“Around mid-November slashing will begin in the Strath Creek, Flowerdale and Glenburn areas.

“Similar to previous years, the majority of Marysville's fire prevention slashing works will be carried out during December and January by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

"Slashing works in the Kinglake Ranges are scheduled to start in late-November.

Council officers are working with neighbouring councils and Regional Roads Victoria to ensure fire prevention works in the Kinglake Ranges area are well-coordinated.

"Of course, exact timing of slashing is hard to pin down, as this is subject to change according to weather conditions and the curing rates of grass. We'll do our best to keep the schedules as up-to-date as possible, so be sure to keep your eye on our website,” Mr Chesworth said.

"Fire preparedness is a high priority for Council. Our Fire Prevention Slashing Program is aimed at improving safety for road users and protecting property and public infrastructure.

“While we're doing our part, every landowner has a responsibility to ensure they take necessary steps in reducing grass and fire risks during the fire danger period too.” Mr Chesworth said.

“Council is also assisting its non-resident ratepayers who are in metropolitan Melbourne areas to ensure they too are able to prepare their properties for the upcoming fire season. There is more information about this on our website.

“As part of Council's broader fire prevention activities, Community Safety Officers will also be inspecting properties and issuing notices (where required) to ensure property owners maintain their properties throughout the fire danger period.” Mr Chesworth said.

■ Two males have been arrested after it was alleged they vandalised the newly opened Warburton Water World earlier this month.

A 19-year-old Warburton male and a 15year-old male have been charged on summons after the water park was damaged on October 4.

Real estate boom

■ Despite the hardships of COVID and its restrictions on the State, Mansfield has managed to massively duck the trends, seeing a huge uptake in real estate prices.

According to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, the median Mansfield house price has risen 29.3 per cent in just the last 12 months.

The shire also squashes the state price average with the median sale prices locally being $570,000, against a regional median of $443,000.

Small businesses await funds ■ The Andrews State Government boasts on its Business Victoria website that most applications for business grant funds are processed within five business days.

Opposition spokesman David Davis this month raised the matter of substantial delays, often months and months, for grant funds to reach struggling local businesses.

“Minister, all of us in this chamber are in contact with many small businesses, and the story is the same everywhere. There are long delays in getting those grants, and I ask: can the businesses expect all of these grants that they are entitled to by the end of the week or by the end of the month?” Mr Davis asked.

Jaala Pulford, Small Business Miniser, replied: “That is a very broad question, and it assumes that I know the details of literally tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of applications.

“I would reflect on Minister Symes’s recommendations that there have been more grants paid to businesses in the last six months than there have been in the previous six years, to just give you a sense of the scale of the task, and where applications are requiring further information then there is a process to get that.

Questions on manslaughter law ■ The hundreds of aged care deaths due to COVID-19 have been raised in State Parliament this month by Shadow Attorney-General Edward O’Donohue, MLC for Eastern Victoria.

Local News Panton Hill Pre-School query ■ The future of the Panton Hill Pre-School was raised in State Parliament by Northern Victoria MLC Mark Gepp on Friday (Oct. 23).

“My adjournment matter is for the attention of the newly minted Minister for Early Childhood, and the action I seek is for her to do all in her power to convince Nillumbik shire that they must act to protect and retain the Panton Hill Preschool, which is currently under threat of closure from the 2021 preschool year,” Mr Gepp said.

“Panton Hill Preschool is a much-loved kindergarten in the lovely village of Panton Hill, right next door to the equally well loved and historic Panton Hill Primary School.

“It is well known that one of the key commitments of theAndrews Labor government is to roll out three-year-old kinder to every child in the state.

“In the case of the shire of Nillumbik, the planning is happening right now for this to begin for the 2021 year.

“Nillumbik has contracted its kindergartens to a number of different providers.

“In the case of Panton Hill, the operator is TryAustralia.

“Try Australia notified parents late last month that in its view it did not have enough four-year-old students enrolled to operate a viable service in 2021.

“Demographic data demonstrates that there are definitely enough potential students in the northern rural area of Nillumbik.

“It beggars belief that the shire is washing its hands of this issue.

“When the mayor, Karen Egan, was asked for help by parents, her response was, ‘Oh, well, it’s a business’. It is not a business. It is early learning.

“What Karen and the shire ought to know is that supporting this service and supporting our kids also makes economic sense.

“A recent study by PwC commissioned by our government concluded that every $1 spent on early learning for our children generates $2.

“The evidence with our school enrolments is that parents may be delaying enrolments due to COVID-19, so it is quite likely this is also occurring with preschools.

“The shire needs to get out there. Use your networks to beat the drum, to attract the handful of students that are required.

“Council could reach out to the nearby shires and see if they have preschool students awaiting a place but cannot get one.

“Whittlesea is a rapidly growing council.

Murrindindi, Yarra Ranges and Manningham boundaries are all nearby.

“The mayor is in caretaker mode now, so she cannot stop those officers having a crack at this.

“I want to commend the parents who are not taking this news lying down. They are putting up a fight for what is right.

“They have got 1000 signatures on a petition, and they have approached my colleague Yan Yean MP Danielle Green and Steve Mullins, a candidate for council who really cares about this kinder and its retention.

“If council will not act, I am sure the new minister will act and have her department work with families and council to keep this preschool open. Please help save Panton Hill Preschool from closure.

“The Shire of Nillumbik must act to keep this valuable service remaining open for 2021. Council’s contracted operator is taking a short-sighted view of its closure. The preschool only needs three or four extra students for four-year-old classes in 2021.”

“When you have a crisis, you reach for the rule book. But what the Premier did was he threw out the rule book and tried to do things in his own way, without using the processes and procedures and mechanisms that were in place to protect Victorians during such a crisis.

(A member interjected.)

MrAtkinson: “Is that my view? Well, yes, it is my view, but it is also the view of the former health minister and it is also the view of the former local government minister, who have both blown the whistle on the way in which this crisis was managed from the outset.

“And we are paying an extraordinary price as Victorians for himhaving thrown out the rule book and having tried to do things with hubris—not being prepared to accept best practice and experience from other jurisdictions and without listening to a broad range of experts, but rather taking a siloed approach and listening to only a very few people with a very limited agenda.

“The result of that is we now have a state that is devastated economically. We have people who are in financial and emotional and mental stress.

“The thing that worries me is not so much what we are experiencing today, this year, but indeed what will manifest next year, 2021, as we come out of COVID, as we do abandon lockdowns and all the other restrictions—or most of the other restrictions at least—and then confront what are going to be the consequences of so many of our actions this year.

“What this legislation is trying to do, even with those clauses that were initially so egregious but even now are of concern to so many people—the reason why those clauses are there, the reason why we are dealing with the areas of this legislation that are of concern to so many people is we have been playing catchup ever since March, because we failed in some of the areas where we ought to have been on the ball, where we ought to have been proactive and where we ought to have understood what exactly the challenge of COVID19 was going to be and addressed it with the right strategies.

“What concerns me is that it is all very well for some of the issues that have been canvassed in the media conferences that the Premier holds every day, but there are three key areas where I think we have absolutely missed the boat and why we are paying such a price now.

“Where was the former minister responsible for WorkSafe and the department, the agency, at the outset of this crisis?

“Where was the minister responsible for aged care and disability services and his department at the outset of this crisis?

“The former Minister for Health, again with a silo approach to COVID-19—perhaps not entirely her fault, perhaps her position was driven particularly by the Premier’s approach to this— forgetting all of the other health aspects, forgetting mental health, forgetting the economic devastation and just concentrating on this one area to the exclusion of all else and to the detriment of all Victorians.

“Why do I raise WorkSafe? Well, in this legislation we actually talk about giving further powers to these officers.

“They have already got enough powers.

Why were they not using those powers at the outset of this crisis? Aged-care settings—we knew these were the most vulnerable people in this situation, where were we? Where were we?

“Where were the health officers who actually did have enough powers to address these issues? They do not need more powers now.

They need to have used the powers that they already had and have, and they ought to address the real issues that are there.

“I have written to businesses throughout Victoria that are on my mailing list and asked them what information they were given by

WorkSafe during this pandemic. And do you know what? Two of them came back and said they had some information from WorkSafe.

“A few of them said they got it from their agents. Most of them said, ‘No, we had to develop our own plans’.

“Now surely WorkSafe’s position at the outset ought to have been to be advising companies, advising workplaces, advising even the health settings, in conjunction with the health department, to make sure that we got it right, that we protected the workers and that we protected their clients, their customers, their patients, whatever.

“I do not entirely blame the Victorian government for aged care. Let me just say on hotel quarantine that I have actually moved on from there.

“What we found out in the Coate inquiry has been disturbing, but it does go to the remarks that I made at the outset about throwing away the rule book.

“But given what happened there—and we ought to understand that, okay, mistakes are going to be made, but you need to learn from those mistakes, and you need to make sure that those mistakes are not replicated over and over again, and they are being continued.

“They are being continued, particularly in aged-care settings, because 75 per cent of the deaths in Victoria are from residential aged care.

“Some 647 Victorians in residential aged care have died. As I said, I do not entirely blame the Victorian Government for that, because indeed the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has some really big questions to answer.

“And they could not answer them to the Royal Commission On Aged Care Services that is currently reporting. It is due to release its final report in January but has certainly put out an interim report just this month because of the impact of COVID-19 in aged-care settings.

“A great impact, but mostly in Victoria because our experience is not the experience of other states.

“Here we have a commission at a federal level where the commissioner, Janet Anderson, in a comment to the 7.30 report, when asked what they were doing as far as our agedcare settings go, said that in some cases it is not always: “… appropriate or safe … to visit a service until the outbreak is over.”

“To me, if I were her minister, I would be asking for her resignation. I mean, why would you have an agency like this charged with the protection of some of the most vulnerable people in our community, and they are basically saying, ‘Well, we will let people die. We will let people get very ill. We will let them stew in their own juices. But we’ll come in when it’s all over and ask questions as to what happened’. That is outrageous.

“Yet whilst that has happened from that federal agency, what did we do in Victoria?

“Where is our intervention as a government as well in these residential aged-care settings?

How come WorkSafe has not played a role in making sure that those staff who are working in those settings have been properly trained, have got access to protective equipment and are using it properly, have got work behaviours and indeed are not moving from place to place, as they were certainly at the outset.

“I understand some of those people working from place to place. Some of the people working in residential aged care are amongst the lowest paid people in our community, and yet they have got one of the toughest jobs in our community. They ought to be better paid.

“Some of them deal with very difficult situations, and yet they are not looked after and certainly they have not been protected.

“The problem with that is that so much of that issue in residential aged care is driving the numbers in Victoria - the very numbers that are holding Victorians hostage to this government’s restrictions—and it is responsible for so much of the outbreak in the community,” Mr Atkinson told the Legislative Council.

- Alan Pell ★ Championships Begin Weather certainly has been a bit of a conundrum of late and reading the weather forecast isn’t going to change some time soon, but nevertheless lots of things have been happening on the golf course. Beginner schools have been a great success. Novices rocking up to have a go. Some having a real feel for the sport. Hopefully, girls, it will mean more new members. Girls that have been attending lessons and practice are continuing to grow in leaps and bounds. This week they had the pleasure learning the rules of Golf Etiquette, an important part of golf. Most important not to upset the harmony of fellow golfers. Learning when to keep one’s mouth shut isd a good one. No one likes a yapper when they are trying hard to make the all important putt that could make or break their score. I have heard it said ”silence is golden”, a saying not to go underestimated in the golfing world. Of course after digesting all that information all were rewarded by having some fun actually hitting the wee white, or coloured ball.

This week on Wednesday (Oct. 21), weather being kind, and the course in awesome condition, ladies had their first round of Club Championships. This year we are proud to include a D-Grade for our newest members. It has been a long time since we have had the numbers to include the extra grade.

One down, three rounds to go. I won’t disclose all the scores other than to say there is some hot competition happening looking forward to the weeks ahead.

Of course we had our daily competition and a name we have seen quite a bit of late just went and popped itself up yet again. Sue Aurisch (35) came in with a 71 nett to pip off the Captain Doreen Lehmann (35) 72. A little birdie told me they have a little encourager between the two and at this rate someone might get her wager back. Congratulations girls. No NTP but Di Holdsworth and Regi Bell had gobblers and Vicki Clements a Birdie - Karen Sangster ★ Bruce Kindred Cup Friday saw the inaugural Bruce Kindred Cup played at Yea GC. 57 players from various regional areas plus a large showing from locals played 4 Ball Best Ball and Individual Stableford Events. It was a time for football colours to be worn and to remember the contribution that Bruce gave to the Yea Golf Club.

He held many official positions including Captain, President and Treasurer but also was a good golfer winning numerous events.

In the 4 Ball Event Dan O’Dwyer (22) and Hamish Stares (30) of Yea produced the outstanding score of 48 to win by three points from Terry Chaplin (21) and Chris Smith (23) on 45. Third on CB were Rob McDonald (24) and Jim Doyle (20) of Broadford on CB from Rick (10) and Judy Wills (31) also on 45 points.

Ladies individual Winner was Vicki Clements (24) with 35 points from second Sue Aurisch (35) with 34 on CB from Judy Wills third. Chris Smith (23) has 39 points to win the Men’s Event from second Darcy Pell (26) with 38. Greg Clements (16) was third on CB from Rick Wills, Rob McDonald and Rob O’Halloran (19) all on 37 points. All winners received trophies plus a $50 golf voucher each. Many thanks to the Kindred family for sponsoring the event.

NTP on the second was PhilArmstrong for the men and no one for the Ladies. There were no winners on the 11th, Rick Wills and Jenny Coleman on the 14th and Brian Simmons and Jan Wealands on the 18th.

There was no golf on Saturday due to the rain.

■ Charlton commenced the week on Monday October 19 and 10Y0 Courage Under Fire-Realy Dry gelding Realy Under Fire, a winner of 14 races appeared to be thrown into the 1609 metre Charlton Supports Tim Tetrick Pace and those who supported him reaped the rewards.

Trained at Heathcote by Jim O'Sullivan for daughter Shannon and teenage son Sean, Realy Under Fire with Shannon in the sulky showed his usual gate speed to lead from gate three, before taking a trail on former South Australian Courts Bliss which went forward from outside the front line to assume control.

Enjoying the run of the race, Realy Under Fire dashed through along the sprint lane in the shadows of the post to gain the day by a head, with Jilliby Roy third 6 metres back off a three wide trail from mid-field in the last lap. The mile rate 1-58.3.

■ Kingston part-owner/trainer/driver Steve Martin landed the Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment Trotters Handicap over 2570 metres with honest 5Y0 Angus Hall-Petite Flair mare The Girls Gotflair in 2-05.9.

Jumping straight to the front from the pole, The Girls Gotflair first up since August was able to dictate the terms to a nicety with no pressure being applied and under hard driving defied all challengers to defeat Sonny Brooke (one/one three wide home turn) by a nose, with Sarahleonie Bow third a head away after trailing the winner and using the sprint lane.

Driven by Jackie Barker, Glengarriff stepped cleanly from outside the front line to enjoy a sweet passage trailing the leader Caledonian Spirit.

■ A digital theatre performance of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes framed as a contemporary stand-up comedy show, is being presented from November 12-9 as a Melbourne Fringe Digital Event.

Written by Anthony Noack, The Preacher explores the relationship between performance and preaching and contemporary and ancient wisdom.

Performing during lockdown to no audience, comedian David ‘Dave’ Davidson struggles to maintain the momentum in his act. However with effort and a liberal dose of wine, he takes the audience along on his journey to question a seemingly absurd and unfair world.

The production views the profound text from the Hebrew Bible as the written recording of a performance to a gathered crowd some two millennia ago. A performance that used humour and rhetoric in a similar manner to today’s standup comedians.

■ Tom Backhaus presents Dazza and Keif Go Viral in Space with Ya Mum online as part of the 2020 Melbourne Fringe Festival from November 13-15 at 8.30pm.

Written and performed by Danni Ray and Keely Windred, this second instalment in the Dazza and Keif Go Viral trilogy, Dazza and Keif Go Viral in Space with Ya Mum sees Dazza and Keif on a quest to save the world.

Searching for extraterrestrials, they enter a ballot to be on the first commercial trip to the moon, but when things go awry, forge ahead the only way they know how - with high energy dancers, raps and lots of jokes about pocket rockets.

“After spending time being shell-shocked at the beginning of this year we thought about how we could continue to thrive in this brave new world. Since then we’ve created merch, a Patreon, performed in some online events and put on our own Instagram live shows every Saturday. We are essentially live performers turned

digital creators,” explains Keely. “We’ve found that the main challenge of the new format is throwing all our energy out into the ether and not having the instant feedback of a live audience.

Macabaret on Zoom

■ Kiwi-American, New York City-based circus performer and producer Ania Upstill is importing talent from NYC and around the world to Melbourne through Zoom for the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Titled Macabaret, this seance over Zoom has been inspired by a 1920s fortune teller's shop in New York. Melbourne audiences are invited to peer through Zoom into a dusty crystal ball to see a variety of acts, starting Friday, November 13..

Experience New York’s weird cabaret underbelly that’s not often seen outside of the seedy Big Apple – until now.

For each performance a different lost soul will call into Madame Macábaret to seek advice from the spirit world. In response, a different line up of macabre performers from New York (and around the world) will be conjured to share their ‘spirited’ performances live on Zoom.

Karen Alvarado (Producing Director) is a Latin actor, director and producer born in Corpus Christi, Texas. She grew up touring bilingual history plays in Texas and Northern Mexico.

Ania Upstill (Director) is a physical theatre artist and clown based in Brooklyn, NY. “I wish I could have brought my solo show, Transhumance, to Melbourne Fringe this year in person. Right now, though, this is what international travel looks like so let’s have as much fun on Zoom as possible!”

■ The 1995 debut novel from Christos Tsiolkas, Loaded, instantly hit a nerve.

Its cinematic adaptation, Head On, exploded into cinemas three years later.

A new production for the Malthouse stage was set to do the same until the strange times we’re in made a live version impossible.

Instead, Tsiolkas and playwright Dan Giovannoni have reimagined Loaded as an immersive four-part digital audio play.

Directed by Stephen Nicolazzo, Roy Joseph’s Ari has lost none of his zeal for sex, drugs, rock and roll and non-stop partying.

Heaven, for Ari, is sound-tracked by Nile Rogers.

“Heaven is old school disco,” he tells us.

We follow Ari through a 24-hour bingefest of drug-taking, drug dealing, clubbing and hook-ups around inner-city Melbourne.

Tsiolkas and Giovannoni state that this is Ari’s story reconceived for the 21st century.

This feels like a 90s story; its cultural awareness is firmly planted before the new millennium.

Much of what might have been shocking in the 90s is now mainstream.

We are no longer reaching for the smelling salts at the thought of gay sex and drag queens.

After all, every millennium is on either Tinder or Grindr now.

Now and then contemporary references— Taylor Swift, FKA Twigs—are thrown in almost as an afterthought.

They are not grounded in the narrative, nor did they need to be.

What Loaded does evoke is a feeling of nostalgia for those heady times where uni students could hold parties in share houses instead of being stuck at home with their parents in these dark days of lockdown.

In 2020, the party is definitely over.

■ The Melbourne Fringe Festival will be presented from November 12-29. and audiences can choose from 250 shows, all taking place either outdoors, digitally, in the home, via audio, behind glass or over the phone.

Events include. Big Day In, where Fringe musician Ian Pidd creates work inspired by the true story of his parent’s COVID-19 diagnosis while they were in an aged-care home.

Recovering in isolation, Ian brought the music to them, playing outside their window.

For Big Day In, a live band will play outside aged-care homes across Melbourne, also live-streamed online. Showing November 2429.

The late-night party atmosphere synonymous with Fringe will continue with Fringe Club at Home – a series of Club Fringe events.

Events include a suburb-by-suburb performance war in Fringe-O-Vision – Fringe’s answer to everyone’s favourite European spectacular; a Karaoke Knockdown with Bae Marie; and Powder Room, which will see the ineffable Reuben Kaye get intimate with Fringe artists in a series of confessional conversations, peppered with lo-fi performances, DIY pantry make-up tips and other things.

■ Once a faraway curiosity vicariously experienced via Hollywood films, over the past two decades Halloween has become increasingly popular in Australia.

This year's All Hallows Eve occurs on a weekend for the first time in five years, and many young Australians will be in search of scary thrills and trick-or-treat lollies.

The spanner in the spider web is that Coronavirus restrictions mean some activities could incur a fine that would frighten even the spookiest gaggle of ghosts.

■ Around the world, a million bottles of water are sold every minute, and although they're almost entirely recyclable, most get tossed into landfills, clog up rivers, and sink to the bottom of the sea, taking anywhere from 500 to 1000 years to degrade.

In the US, more than 70 per cent become waste.

In just a few decades, water went from a common resource many of us, especially those in the developed world, could access with minimal impact, to an incredibly popular packaged commodity with a serious environmental footprint.

Companies have had enormous commercial success selling us on the idea that water is better bottled.

They have marketed their products as healthy, energyboosting, ultra-hydrating, youth-enhancing and pure.

Today, a true connoisseur can buy a $90 bottle of water extracted from melted Norwegian icebergs, while the average consumer thinks nothing of dropping a buck-fifty on 16 ounces of a liquid that tumbles from the tap at home.

"Companies like Nestlé and Coke are taking the public's water, putting it in a plastic bottle and marketing it," said Judith Enck, founder of Beyond Plastics and a former EPA regional administrator under President Barack Obama.

In some ways, their success is the ultimate expression of modern capitalism.

At the root of multiple, enormous environmental crises is an industry that has risen to a market value of $160 billion in 2019 by convincing the world to buy something most of us can get virtually for free.

While the US has some of the safest tap water in the world, public systems are imperfect.

This was made very clear by the crisis in Flint, Michigan, where a switch in the city's water supply in 2014, made to save money, ended up piping tainted water into people's homes.

Even six years after the scandal, distrustful of the water flowing from their taps and the pandemic stalling the city's work to finish replacing its water pipes some residents continue to rely largely on millions of donated bottles of water to get by.

But the industry hasn't become an economic behemoth by providing an essential service in times of crisis. It has captured customers with big claims and bold branding.

We continue to lap it up. Bottled water overtook soda as the largest beverage category in the US in 2016.

Americans bought 14.4 billion gallons of bottled water in 2019 and global sales are only expected to grow, predicted to reach $307.6 billion by 2025.

Atrocious ratings ■ On a night when the NBA broadcast its most important game, you would think that the league would own the night.

That, once again, turned out to not be the case.

The viewership numbers for the sixth and final game of the NBA Finals are in, and they are atrocious.

Game 6 drew, at its peak, 6.028 million viewers.

To put that in perspective, Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, which included a team from Canada and did not include LeBron James, drew 18.34 million viewers.

Those figures represent a 66 per cent drop.

The heavy viewership losses are consistent with disastrous viewership numbers from the first half of the series when games one through three drew consecutive, historically low numbers.

Indeed, the low numbers are consistent with an entire season of bad television viewership performances.

The NBA restarted its season, after a five-month hiatus due to the Coronavirus, by making social justice messaging and imagery a center piece of their television broadcasts.

That messaging was greeted with historic drops in ratings, drops largely due to fan dissatisfaction with the overtly political nature of the games

■ My first memory of seeing Richard Widmark in a film was as a giggling gangster who pushed an old lady in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs in Kiss Of Death. I thought what a rat!

Then, as a 10-year-old who knew everything, I saw him in a film titled The Frogmen where he played a ‘goodie’ and I immediately changed my mind - what a guy! I thought to myself.

From that time on I was a fan of Richard Widmark. Richard Weedt Widmark was born in Minnesota in 1914.

His father was a travelling salesman and the family moved to various locations during Richard's childhood.

He studied acting at college and made his radio debut at the age of 14. He tried to enlist during the war years but was rejected because of a perforated ear drum.

Richard worked in radio and appeared in many popular shows including an ongoing role in the serial Front Page Farrell.

In 1942 he married Jean Hazelwood and they had a daughter. The following year he appeared in the Broadway comedy, Kiss And Tell.

Richard Widmark made his film debut in 1947 as Tommy Udo, the giggling killer in Kiss Of Death, the film that impressed me as a child.

The role must have also impressed others as he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

After his contract with Twentieth Century Fox studios expired Richard became a freelance actor and even appeared as himself in an episode of the television series I Love Lucy.

During his career Richard Widmark starred in more than 60 films. He worked for various studios and starred in films such as Hell And High Water, Broken Lance, The Last Wagon, How The West Was Won and Murder On The Orient Express.

One of my favourites was Judgment At Nuremberg. Richard played the prosecuting at-

the subject matter was very important.

He also starred opposite Doris Day in the romantic comedy The Tunnel Of Love which was a complete departure from his ‘tough guy’ roles.

The film was directed by Gene Kelly, but it was not a success at the box office.

In 1968 Richard starred in the successful film Madigan which was later produced as a television series.

His acting idol was Spencer Tracy and he became a good friend of Sidney Poitier afterthey made three films together. From everything I have read about Richard Widmark during my research it seems that he was a decent human being.

In his later years he enjoyed being at his farms in California and Connecticut.

His final film was True Colours with John Travolta in 1991. Sadly his wife passed away in 1997 and Richard married again in 1999.

Richard Widmark passed away in Connecticut, after a long illness, in 2008 at the age of 93.

A new exhibition and introduction to the First Australians gallery showcases objects drawn from the National Museum of Australia's extensive indigenous collections.

National Museum Director, Dr Mathew Trinca, said: "The carefully chosen objects in Talking Blak to History celebrate indigenous cultures and open the gallery's conversations on issues including land rights, sovereignty, cultural renaissance and deaths in custody.

"The undeniable power of the objects draws visitors into the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander story."

It begins with one of the Museum's treasures, Uta Uta Tjangala's stunning work Yumari (1981).

Other highlights include Vernon Ah Kee's artwork Canchant (about 2010), a 'surfboard' depicting an image of his grandfather's face, and the 1992 Renault Twingo car decorated with John Moriarty's Balarinji Wunala Dreaming design, which Frenchman Jean Dulon drove on a 25,000kilometre promotional tour of Australia in 1994.

The exhibition includes objects never before displayed at the Museum, including Queenie McKenzie's painting Mistake Creek Massacre (1997) which references the 1915 incident in which eight indigenous people were killed, a two-metre-high metal basket (2014) by Lorraine Connelly-Northey, and dialysis equipment from the remote Kintore community in the Western Desert.

There are rarely seen works by artists including Michael Cook, William 'Bill' Onus, Julie Gough, Yondee (Shane Hansen) and Kevin Gilbert.

Head of the museum's Indigenous Knowledges Curatorial Centre, Margo Neale, said: "Talking Blak to History provides a counterpoint to the white narrative that has dominated the national story for so long.

"Talking Blak reveals feelings about attachment to Country. It tells stories of survival and resilience, overcoming the grief and loss brought about by colonisation through endurance, reconciliation and truth-telling.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs HUBIE HALLOWEEN (M/Streaming on NETFLIX): In his hometown of Salem, simpleton and good natured Hubie Dubois is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike, but this Halloween, there's something more that's going bump in the night, and it's up to Hubie to save the town.

Following on from his critically acclaimed performance as the fast talking ill-fated jeweller in 2019's "Uncut Gems," any credibility Adam Sandler established in that one is thrown to the wind in this generally harmless but unashamedly inane comedy-horror romp that fails overwhelmingly in scares, laughs and intelligence, throughout which Adam Sandler, as the central character of Hubie Dubois, delivers an almost unintelligible performance and characterization that makes any Donald Trump speech look and sound positively Shakespearian by comparison.

Brisk and bright, but woefully unbalanced and sketchy, the standout cast includes Kevin James, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, Maya Rudolph, Michael Chiklis, Rob Schneider and Ben Stiller in a cameo, but all seem lost as they deliver lame dialogue and clichéd expressions, but overall, comedy or drama, or both, Halloween has been the subject of many memorable films, and inspires each year the traditional viewing of many great classic movies, but sadly, with the exception of the end credits, this diabolically dumb, frightfully unfunny and ultimately forgettable fantasy-horror -comedy pot-boiler fails to make the list by a mile. by Tom Wolfe that explores the Mercury 7 astronauts and the origins and growth of the United States' space program.

I don't mean to be a grump, but the big question for this series is why? This well made and well cast effort with good production design and period detail is only a shell of the classic book by Tom Wolfe and subsequent film, one of the major disappointments in the series is the exclusion of the very key element of "The Right Stuff," that of legendary breaking the sound barrier test pilot Charles "Chuck" Yeager, and overall, lacks the sheer energy, emotional impact and gripping ferocity of Philip Kaufman's 1983 multi Oscar winning 193 minute blockbuster movie of the same name, also driven by an unforgettable super-charged Oscar winning score by Bill Conti.

Remaking any much revered movie based on a literary classic is a fragile undertaking fraught with all kinds of emotional and physical obstacles at the best of times, but turning a classic movie into a TV series is even more so, a current example now streaming is "The Haunting of Bly Manor" based on the novel "The Turn of the Screw"

by Henry James and the subsequent classic 1961 film "The Innocents" starring Deborah Kerr, and the upcoming remake of "Rebecca" from the celebrated novel by Daphne Du Maurier and the highly revered Oscar winning 1940 film by Alfred Hitchcock.

As for "The Right Stuff" the TV series, all new generations may find it of interest, but I'm three episodes in and I won't be returning to it, and like all remakes, there will always be the original inspirations to fall back on, and at best, this series serves well only as a trailer for both the original literary masterpiece and the unmissable pulse-pounding 1983 cinematic classic, both of which are what "The Right Stuff" is really all about, and then sum! Stars: **1/2 THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD (PG/New to DVD and Blu-Ray, and Now Streaming on AppleTV & Goodle Play): A unique take on Charles Dickens' semi-autobiographical classic set in 1840s England that chronicles the life of its iconic title character as he navigates a chaotic world to find his elusive place within it.

A delightfully brisk comedy-drama from Co-Writer and Director Armando Iannucci, whose previous credits include the award winning series Veep (TV), The Thick of It (TV) and subsequent film In The Loop, as well as the acclaimed satire The Death of Stalin (2017), and this time delivers an engaging and entertaining period tale with a stellar cast all in top form that includes Dev Patel, delivering an energetic and sprightly performance as David Copperfield, along with veterans Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw.

As you would expect from Armando Iannucci, this is driven by a solid screenplay and tautly concise direction, and along with superb production design, period detail, set design and cinematography, the end result is a colourful 19th century journey full of wit, drama, surrealism and satire that is sure to send you on the way when all is said and done with a smile on your face and a spring in your step.

Rourke’s Reviews Blackpink ■ Light Up The Sky (PG). 80 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Though it never quite goes into particular areas one would like explored, this ultra-slick documentary detailing the rise of one of K-Pop's biggest groups is a great introduction to Blackpink, offering up a pretty good profile of its very talented members.

Blackpink debuted in 2016 (I remember hearing their terrific single Boom-Bayah for the first time on SBS PopAsia, which we got before their actual debut single, Whistle), but each member, Jennie, Lisa, Rose and Ji-soo, had to endure between four and six years of intense training before that chance could eventuate.

Like many K-Pop artists, this meant that a huge chunk of their childhood basically disappeared, while dealing with incredible amounts of responsibility, isolation and pressure.

The K-Pop industry will always remain very well-guarded about how this affects all these young people wanting to achieve success, but after high profile suicides such as Goo Hara (from Kara), Sulli (from f(x)) and Jong-hyun (from SHINee), company executives have had to start taking the mental welfare of the artists they promote seriously, whether it be how hard they are pushed, or in dealing with the horrific abuse these impressionable people suffer on social media.

Things look a little ominous early on when the group's producer/ songwriter Teddy Park is the one talking about the group members, but once the four women themselves are placed front-and-centre, the documentary improves considerably, and director Caroline Suh manages the impressive feat of getting information from the artists that means more if you read between the lines (I didn't know that Rose grew up in Melbourne; she even still has a bit of an Aussie accent).

But Suh also captures how each member connected, and best of all, shows both the passion they have for music, and the genuine talent that they do possess. Blackpink : Light Up The Sky may keep certain aspects of the industry in the dark, but it does categorically show that K-Pop does contain genuinely talented artists, who train long and hard to get where they are, and Blackpink are a perfect example of that, and hopefully this documentary will help increase their already sizeable fanbase.

The group's first full album, simply entitled Blackpink : The Album, is available now, and is a great listen, and definitely worth the pur-

chase. I am also eagerly awaiting the next full album by supergroup Twice, called Eyes Wide Open, which was released on October 26 (and helps celebrate the group's fifth anniversary), Mamamoo's tenth mini-album Travel, due November 4, and Loona's third mini-album 12.00, which came out on October 19.

RATING - ****

The Mortuary Collection ■ (MA). 111 minutes. Now streaming on Shudder.

Anthology films have always been a hit-and-miss affair, but sometimes a true classic is delivered (Dead Of Night, Kwaidan and Creepshow are prime examples, while Ghost Stories, Trilogy Of Terror, the Three Extreme films, Cat's Eye and Phobia 2 are all very entertaining), and while it may not be quite on same level as those first three mentioned, The Mortuary Collection is a beautifully crafted concoction that deserves both notice and praise, making for perfect Halloween viewing. The framing story is set at an appropriately dour funeral home, run by the eerily unhealthy looking Montgomery Dark (a wonderful Clancy Brown, of Highlander and Buckaroo Banzai fame), who is interviewing young, enthusiastic Sam (Caitlin Custer) for an assistant position.

Curious rather than repulsed by her surroundings, Sam asks Dark for a gruesome story, which the mortician happily agrees to serve up.

A total of four stories will be told.

While the tales themselves are rather predictable, it is the level of care, detail and imagination afforded to each that makes them so entertaining, and the non-specific time period allows horror fans to see rich homages to films from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

Writer/director Ryan Spindell, making his feature film debut, has spent seven years bringing this project to life, and the love and affection shows in every frame and character.

While obviously a huge fan of the genre, Spindell doesn't make his film an empty imitation, instead filling it with an identity all its own.

Production values are absolutely first-rate, and indeed this is a real feast for the eyes.

Though horror fans will get an extra kick out of what transpires onscreen, general audiences will be able to enjoy this too, seeing a filmmaker truly investing in his material in the best possible way.

The year 2020 provided a challenging season with yields below average for the second year in a row.

The beginning of the growing season was quite hot and dry but the months of January, February and March were cooler than the long-term average, which resulted in higher-than-normal natural acidity retention in the fruit at harvest.

"Our trademark pinot gris, for instance, has extremely concentrated, yet vibrant flavours due to the dry conditions, whilst retaining crisp natural acidity and providing a perfectly balanced wine", Tim said.

WINE REVIEWS Tim Adams 2020 Riesling ($24): The use of only the free-run juice has resulted in this wine being intensely flavoured and aromatic, retaining delicacy at the same time. The wine has floral and citrus aromas. On the palate there is richness of flavour, freshness and trademark brisk finish. Rieslings from the Clare Valley are enjoyable for many years: zesty and spirited when youthful, or left over time their maturation is slow, graceful, and worthy of appreciation. Open race for the Victoria Derby ■ The Danny O'Brien-trained youngster, Young Werther, heads the betting for the Victoria Derby to be run at Flemington this Saturday.

In one of the most open Derbies in recent years, Young Werther, by the top New Zealand sire, Tavistock, is the punters pick despite having only had the two runs.

At his outing at Geelong, back on September 6, he impressed good judges with the way he won over 1500 metres in winning his maiden, coming home with a good split of 35.26 seconds for the last 600 metres.

O'Brien then took him to Flemington on October 3 running him in the Super Impose Stakes over 1800 metres on the spacious circuit.

It was a good run at his second try, stepping up in class from a maiden to get beaten by a smart galloper in Khoekhoe, in the care of Matt Cumani.

It's common knowledge that O'Brien feels he has another good youngster in his stable alongside two stars, Russian Camelot and Vow and Declare.

It is a big ask for the three-year-old at only his third run, but he is classy.

In early markets on the TAB he is being quoted at $5 to get the biscuits.

On the next level is another that has impressed and that is Hit the Shot, who got home hard over 2000 metres at Caulfield on Cup Day behind Albarado, to finish third in a tight finish.

That run impressed a lot of shrewd judges who marked him as one to watch.

That was his fourth outing, having won his first race at Ballarat, back on August 20.

He then put in an ordinary run when eighth at Moonee Valley, when he was up in class.

He then got within a length of the placegetters at Flemington over 1800 metres coming home strongly, back in fourth place, impressing many with the run.

Hence the $8 being offered on the TAB. Two runners fought out the finish of the Caulfield Classic over 2000 metres with nothing much separating them at the finish, with Albarado beating Let's Karaka Deel.

Both are being quoted at around the $9 mark, Albarado is with the powerful stable of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young at Cranbourne, whom have a dearth of good horses.

While Let's Karaka Deel is with another top combination, in Ciaron Maher and David Eustace at Caulfield.

Both youngsters are bred to stay, Albarado is by the Cox Plate winner, Savabeel, and Let's Karaka Deel, is by the top New Zealand sire, Dundeel.

So both will stay OK over the 2500 metre trip of the Derby at Flemington.

Next is the early Derby favourite in Cherry Tortoni, prepared by leading trainer Pat Payne, who trains from Plumpton, west of Melbourne.

The stable decided to give him a try in the Champion Stakes in Sydney, on October 10 over 2000 metres, but he was found wanting towards the end of the race fading out of it, on a good four track.

He has been set for the Victoria Derby over the 2500 metre journey, and I feel he can get

It was only his third outing, having run third at his first try at Donald, running over 1354 metres, coming from last at the turn, beaten three lengths.

At his next outing he won in good fashion at Ballarat, over 1600 metres, coming from fifth at the turn, racing away to win by 1.5 lengths.

He is one improving, as the distance goes out, and is bred to stay being by the English sire, Redwood, out a New Zealand mare.

Plus, the combination of Price and Kent Junior, are hard to beat, when they are on song.

I feel it is one of the hardest Victoria Derbies to pick.

If I had a bet, I would stick with the favourite, Young Werther, and, Cherry Tortoni, especially at the odds.

■ The Aidan O'Brien trained galloper Tiger Moth is the one to beat in the Melbourne Cup, mainly on weights, getting in with 52.5 kilos for the big one.

He has only had four starts winning two of those, with two minors.

He is by the English Derby winner, Galileo, out of an Irish bred mare, so the distance shouldn't worry him, although he has hadn't much experience for a four-year-old.

On the second line is Russian Camelot, who contested the Cox Plate.

He is all class, but he would still have to get the 3200 metres.

The good young Victorian stayer, Surprise Baby, in top of his form this season so far, has got to be the one to beat among the Australians.

His run in last year's Melbourne Cup was a beauty, after getting into trouble, he flashed home for fifth behind Vow and Declare.

He has done everything right since resuming, over distances a bit short for him.

The English Derby winner, Anthony Van Dyck, ran a great race with his 58.5 kilos in the Caulfield Cup coming from barrier 17.

He came from 16th in the running at the 600 metre mark, to go down by only a neck to the good mare, Verry Elleegant, in the Caulfield Cup. Think Big won the Melbourne Cup back in 1975, with the same weight, but it is a big ask, but he is all class.

I am a little concerned about whether Verry Elleegant can run a strong 3200 metres with her 55.5 kilos.

I like Tiger Moth, Russian Camelot, Surprise Baby, Anthony Van Dyck, and Verry Elleegant.

Looking for a Professional to run the show? back to his best. He has only had six starts down for three wins and two minor placings, so you have got to get him a chance.
