Premier Daniel Andrews announced last weekend that restrictions on regional area businesses would ease as fast as possible.

Victoria’s ‘ring of steel’ stopping metropolitan people from visiting regional areas is set to be tightened.

Local tourism businesses, which have largely gone without bookings for month, are eager for the restrictions to be lifted.

Pubs, restaurants and cafes in regional area are hoping to seat up to 70 customers outdoors and 40 customers indoors.

I was elected on the premise of change and have delivered it. We firstly changed the CEO. This in turn changed senior management throughout the council. It put the right people in the right place. We changed the relationship residents have with the council.

From antagonism to a working relationship. We changed the council outlook to one supporting business (the business grants program). We changed the way we address our most important money-spinning business, which is Tourism.

In the next term I want to continue this momentum of change. We must keep the rate rises very low to stimulate our economy. To move faster, I want to have more special council meetings.

With monthly spacings it can take 3 months to get some things through. We can halve that time by having special meetings when needed. Secondly, I want to have less and less confidential meetings. Confidentiality breeds lots of unhelpful rumours. We need totally open and honest government in our shire. We must change our council chambers to allow more room for our residents to join our meetings in comfort.

With the lack of bus services, I want to change our MOVING MURRINDINDI program to further assist those needing transport getting regularly to shops, medical and similar services, easier and faster with

more vehicles and drivers being available. I want council to have more ready designed projects so we can quickly capitalise on any last-minute grants that often come along without warning. We must change council to be much more agile in this faster paced electronic world. We must change our outlook on tourism to give it much more priority than in the past. It is our ticket to recovery.

New bridges ■ Mitchell Shire Council will install two new pedestrian bridges on either side of the Northern Highway Road Bridge over Kilmore Creek on Thursday (Oct. 22) between 10am-2pm.

Motorists should prepare for delays of up to 20 minutes with traffic limited to one lane with full traffic management in place. Motorists are urged to seek an alternative route where possible.

The northbound lane of the Northern Highway will be closed at the bridge site.

Murrindindi East U3A is cautiously resuming activities, in line with COVID-19 precautions, while preparing programs for 2021. Walking groups (of no more than 10) have been out and about exploring McKenzie Reserve and Grannies Lane in recent weeks, while the Galloping Gourmets group have enjoyed company at lunch in a local hotel. Others have linked up in Zoom meetings , weekly to maintain contact with their groups, and in more focussed discussions such as the ‘Interesting People’ group. U3A provides a range of interesting activities and the opportunity to establish new networks amongst seniors entering the Third Age, post employment. Currently groups are held covering interests such as gardening, cooking, cycling, walking, discussions of interesting people and many more. Overnight trips, COVID permitting, are also on the agenda. New classes proposed for 2021 include an introduction to Water Colour painting, and Unlocking Cryptics, for crossword enthusiasts. Suggestions for new classes or groups are welcome, perhaps a family history group? A social table tennis group?

Enrolment day for 2021 program is November 27, at Community House at Taggerty.

The Andrews State Government says regional roads in Victoria have never been better, Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish told Parliament last week. “What hogwash,” she replied. “We know as far back as 2017 the AuditorGeneral found VicRoads has no effective strategy when it comes to roads maintenance and an inability to prioritise the most important projects, which leads to an over-reliance on expensive works. The Melba Highway is a key highway for north–south traffic. Many people use it to go from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne to pick up the Hume Highway through Benalla. It is busy with local roads, tourist traffic, trucks, delivery and freight. It is extremely busy. It needs to be invested in, and the government has overlooked this particularly,” Ms McLeish said.

Greensborough Highway Patrol members last week nabbed three riders on motorised bicycles in Eltham.

Police were patrolling along Parsons Rd, near Margaret St, in Eltham when they observed the youths riding the motorised bikes. The males - two from Eltham, one from Kinglake - were travelling in excess of 40kmh without peddling. None of the youths were wearing appropriate safety gear. The bicycles were inspected and found to have 80cc motors attached to them with the throttle being controlled on the handle bars. These types of motorised bicycles are classified as motorcycles with none of the youths bring licensed to ride a motorcycle. The youths will be charged on summons with traffic related offences.

■ Postal voting in this year’s local Council elections closes at 6pm this Friday (Oct. 23). To be valid, voting papers must be lodged in Australia Post mail boxes by that time.

Council elections are being held in the municipalities of Mitchell Murrindindi, Nillumbik and Yarra Ranges. There is no poll this year in Whittlesea.

There will be no in-person voting or polling booths conducted in this year’s elections.

Ballot papers were mailed to voters’ home addressses earlier this month.Residents need to follow the instructions on the ballot pack and return their completed vote before 6 pm on Friday for their vote to count.

“Postal votes can be received in the mail until 12 noon on the fifth working day after election day, as long as the voter voted before the close of voting on Friday, OCtober 23,” said a Victorian Electoral Commission representative.

“To vote correctly in a local council election you must number every box on the ballot paper in the order of your choice. Ballot papers that are not completed correctly – for example, the voter uses ticks or crosses – are declared informal and set aside to be checked.”

The official declaration of the polls is due to be held on Friday, November 13.

■ Warrandyte MLA Ryan Smith last week presented a petition to State Parliament with 236 residents claiming the State Government has neglected to proactively manage the Warrandyte State Park, and surrounding public land, which has led to an excessive build-up of fire fuel loads.

The petitioners asked the Legislative Assembly ro ensure that the Andrews Government commits to the residents of Warrandyte, Warrandyte South, North Warrandyte and Wonga Park that in the months leading to the 2020-21 fire season a greater focus will be given to the build-up of these excessive fire fuel loads and, further, ensure those fire fuel loads are cleared through a proscribed burning program, slashing and/or any other methods the government deems fit as a priority in order to keep residents safe.

New practices at Whittlesea ■ Whittlesea Council says it is helping rural landholders implement sustainable land management practices with an Environmental Works Grant Program.

The program provides a financial incentive to rural landowners on two hectares or more, to conduct works on their land that protect and enhance Whittlesea’s remnant vegetation and support local wildlife.

Whittlesea landholder, ‘Linda’, has used grants to install next boxes and add vegetation which provides shelter for wild life, improves the appearance of the land and helps prevent soil erosion.

“The grant has allowed me to add more and more trees and now, when I stand in the gully, I can’t see out because of vegetation,” Linda said.

“I’ve also managed to fence off a corner of my property adjoining the road, where there

■ Residents can apply for a permit to collect firewood from certain Murrindindi Council roadsides until November 30.

Residents with a permit can collect fallen timber for firewood from all Council-managed roadsides except those with a high conservation value.

Those roadsides contain important remnant vegetation and are protected. These areas are identified on the permit.

Permit conditions stipulate that there is to be no felling of standing trees - dead or alive.

The removal of firewood without a permit can result in significant fines. To apply for a permit or for more information about firewood collection, including a list of Council’s environmentally-significant roadsides, click here or give Council a call on 5772 0333.

Problems on Melba Hwy ■ In State Parliament, Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish has raised the issue of local roads.

“The Melba Highway runs 65 kilometres between Yea and Coldstream, and it is really hard to tell exactly where the worst spots are because there are so many: is it at Ewing Wynd, not far from Yea; perhaps just near Perts reserve; or Devlins Bridge at Glenburn; several spots in Castella; Dixons Creek at Hunts Lane is particularly bad; or north and south of Yarra Glen; or everywhere else in between.

“There are just so many areas that need attention because this government has forgotten this highway and certainly Victorian roads.

“The potholes grow by the day, both in size and in number. The rain is not helping. There are broken surfaces everywhere.

■ A woman waskilled and a man seriously injured after a vehicle rollover in Beveridge on Saturday night (Oct. 17) The car was travelling along Merriang Rd when it left the road and overturned near Elizabeth Place shortly after 7pm.

The female driver was declared deceased at the scene.

Her male passenger had to be cut from the vehicle and was airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Annual Report ■ Yarra Ranges Council has completed its annual report, showcasing the organisation’s work during the 2019-20 financial year.

Councillors considered the report at their latestmeeting, noting the report’s completion and submitting the report to the Minister for Local Government.

All Councils must complete an Annual Report each year as part of statutory requirements set by the State Government.

Hard copies of the report cannot currently be displayed at Council’s Community Links, as they remain closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, copies can be posted out to community members on request.

Kids denied school photos ■ The return of local children has been soured because Premier Daniel Andrews is not permitting school photos to be taken, says Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish.

Ms McLeish is calling for the State Government to its their controversial decision so aqs to allow families and students this memory and save the photo industry from collapse.

"Half a million students and hundreds of photographers will miss out on school photos this year due to the Labor Governments irrational decision to ban school photos,” Ms McLeish said. "Parents, school communities and photographers are all dismayed with this decision."

"I have been contacted by many school photographers living in fear that this call will be the end of their business."

Photography businesses are on the brink of collapse due to the COVID-19 restrictions, making them unable to shoot events, weddings or annual school photos.

Congrats. Kilmore ■ State Health Minister Martin Foley has congratulated the Kilmore community on its response to the local COVID-19 emergency.

“I rise to update the house on continued developments and improvements in the government’s contact-tracing system, particularly as it reflects in the recent Kilmore outbreak of COVID-19,” Mr Foley told the Legislative Assembly last week.

“Recently, through a seeding of the infection from a permitted worker from Melbourne into the Kilmore community, we have seen a Coronavirus outbreak in that community.

“I want to particularly thank the Kilmore community and the Oddfellows Cafe proprietor for the fantastic job that they have done in record keeping and in making sure that the information was readily available to the increasingly digitised contact-tracing team.

“That has seen the rollout of that contacttracing team being able to engage with hundreds of people to see almost 1000 people tested in the Kilmore community within days and to see the amazing response of the wider Kilmore community to come around in solidarity with that cafe owner and the very small number of people who have returned a positive case.

■ “The majority of students across the state have now returned to school. I am hearing so many reports as to how happy the kids are to be back and seeing their friends,” Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish told State Parliament on Thursday (Oct. 15).

“This is not quite the case for students in years 8 to 10, who are still undertaking remote learning.

“For these students and their families the pain of being away from their classrooms and their friends is strongly felt.

“The government must ensure that these students return to the classroom as soon as possible. We know schools are safe. We know it is the kids who are missing out— missing out on the best type of learning and on seeing their friends.

“The damage of being away for so long is being acutely felt. For some this is academic, but for many others it is the emotional toll.

“VicSRC, in a survey of students, found that 46 per cent of students felt they had slipped behind and with this came an increase in stress and anxiety. All students need to be back at school,” Ms McLeish said.

“My colleagues and I recently had a briefing from Professor Ian Hickie, of the University of Sydney, who gave us a very sobering briefing about how the lockdowns are actually going to affect people’s mental health going forward.

“He is forecasting suicides rising by 10 per cent. Add another 3 per cent if you are in regional Victoria, and of course young people are over-represented in those figures,” Mr Smith said.

Letter to the Editor Shrinking water meter usage Sir, Annual water meter usage in the gravity fed irrigation districts show that over an average of 12 years (2008-2020) 47 per cent of all meters delivered zero to 10ML/year.

The 2019-2020 season showed this figure rising to 61.3 per cent of all meters across the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District delivering zero to 10ML. Individual water meter usage is variable, depending on the irrigator’s farming decisions , wet/dry seasons, allocations and water prices, but none of this changes the fact that on average over the last 12 years, as shown by GMW meter usage statistics released on October 5, nearly half of all meters in the irrigation district delivered only the minimal amount of zero to 10ML/year.

That is, nearly half of the meters in the modernised system are either not being used at all or being used only for stock and domestic and filling dams, not for increased productivity, when you consider that in Autumn half a megalitre is needed per acre, 10ML will only water 20 acres ( 8 Ha) once.

The 2013-2014 irrigation season, according to GMW figures, could be regarded as an average season delivering approximately 1300GL, yet still only 22 per cent of meters across the GMID delivered 100ML or more.

The $2.2 billion of taxpayer’s dollars that has been spent on modernisation and the Connections Project in the GMID has overseen a massive under-utilisation of the modernised metering fleet and dramatic loss in agricultural productivity particularly in the dairying industry.

It was estimated that modernisation would increase irrigation efficiency from about 70 per cent to at least 85 per cent , to protect the region’s status as a source of high security water and enhance the sustainability of the entire region” It is government policy alone, that has overseen the huge reduction in the irrigation consumptive pool via ‘water savings’ projects.

Governments that have stood by while an open water market allowed increasing volumes of high security water to be traded and sold downstream , which in turn has created environmental degradation in the Goulburn, Murray, Gunbower Creek, BarmahMillewa and Koondrook-Perricoota Forests and seen increasing salinity issues in semiarid large scale horticultural developments.

With the total amount of water delivered in the gravity irrigation system standing at 530GL in the 2019-2020 season and approximately half of all meters on average from 2008-2020, delivering less than 10ML/year, one can only conclude that modernisation and the Connections projects have failed dismally in increasing irrigation efficiency across the GMID, but have been very successful in claiming water savings which was the initial main intention.

It is difficult to comprehend why the Victorian Water Minister would apply for a further $177 million in federal funding to proceed with yet another round of modernisation, the Backbone/ Transformation Project, under the guise of a Water Efficiency Project that is touted to ‘save’ another 15.9GL. This will undoubtedly again reduce the GMID consumptive pool as have previous projects.

The GMW water meter usage figures provide undeniable proof that the cumulative implementation of ‘water savings’ projects have directly impacted the productivity and irrigation efficiency of the region.

Grant for Murrindindi ■ The State Government is providing grant to local communities across Victoria to host fun and free educational activities and events during this year's Children's Week celebrations.

Jaclyn Symes, Member for Northern Victoria, announced that Murrindindi Shire Council will receive $700 to host activities for children and their families during festivities.

Thousands of children, aged up to 12, are expected to take part in Children's Week between October 24 to November 1.

The grants will go towards free activities such as online art exhibitions, outdoor or messy play activities, dance workshops, arts and crafts, musical and story-telling performances, drawing competitions and picnics.

"Murrindindi Shire Council embraced the challenge to think creatively about how to host activities and events safely to engage children and their communities,” Ms Symes said.

Local Sport Yea Golf winners Broadford Boys Welcomed ■ Wednesday’s saw 22 men from Broadford GC come to Yea for golf as their course was recently coored. With 20 Yea men hosting and 19 ladies on the course it was fantastic to see the beautiful greens and fairways fully utilised.

The competition was Stableford and the winner from Broadford was Rob McDonald Jnr (26) with 35 points, second was G. Hopper (26) from Chris Ericksson (20) on CB with 31 points. Fourth on CB was Rob McDonald (26) with 30 points on CB from Laurie McDonald (17). Laurie Dobson was NTP on the 14th and Jimmy Doyle on the 18th.

For Yea, the winner was David Ngo (23) with 38 points. Second on CB was Alan Pell (15) from third Bob Glenister (11) with 35 points. Bill Dredge (21) was fourth on CB from Jeff Aurisch (19) with 33 points. Alan Pell was NTP on the 2nd and Ray Partridge won the Club Award.

Runners-up team Jan Wealands and Meryl Connell (14.5) having a 77.5 also claiming the NTP for the day. Player Di Holdsworth claimed the only gobbler.

Six ladies in total graced the course to battle for the Gold Medal. Kudos to those volunteers who keep our course looking spic n span we cannot thank you enough.

Sixteen ladies completed the 18 and another three the nine holes. Quite a good crowd.

One lady in particular out shone having her best ever score. A consistent Adrianne Anglin (16) just keeps on getting better and better.

Last week she had an 88 off the stick this week she outdid herself having an 80 off the stick giving her a 64 nett. Adrianne won the Gold and also had a birdie.

Runner-up Vicki Clements (24) 75 nett also claimeda birdie. Putting winner with a great score of 24 putts Meryl Connell. NTP on the 11th 2nd shot Christine Simmons. Gobblers for the day: Penny Britton, Di Holdsworth, Meryl Connell and Karen Sangster.

The nine hole girls were Robyn Parsons (54) on a countback from Jan Gilmartin (54) both on 41 nett.

- Karen Sangster Rick Wills is Champion Last Saturday saw 25 golfers contest the third and final round of the Men’s Championship. The weather was a concern for some beforehand but as often happens at Yea the heavy rain skirted around, eaving conditions pretty good. The leading players in each of the three grades maintained their winning positions.

Rick Wills (10) won theA Grade with 244 from Michael Spagnolo (9) second on CB from Bob Glenister (11) on 260. Greg Clements (15) won the B-Grade with 266 from second Alan Pell (15) with 273. C-Grade was won by Bill Dredge (21) with 285 from David Ngo (23) with 289. The Clark Trophy for the lowest handicap nett score was won

by Rick Wills with 213. Bill Dredge and Greg Clements had 220 and Rob O’Halloran and David Ngo had 221.

No confidence in the Andrews Govt.

■ Cindy McLeish, Deputy Leader of the State Opposition, spoke in Parliament last week to the ‘no confidence’motion in Daniel Andrews’s Government.

“I rise this afternoon to make a very important contribution on a very important motion—that of no confidence in the Andrews Labor Government,” Ms McLeish told the Legislative Assembly.

“We need to think why we are here at this point now, why we are having to have this vote and debate around no confidence.

“We have a government before us, a very arrogant Labor Government, very typical, who is taking Victorians for granted, taking us as mugs and thinking that everybody will accept what they say without scrutiny, without question.

“And I think it is fairly obvious now that people are starting to say, ‘Well, there needs to be a lot more scrutiny, there needs to be a lot more questioning, and it doesn’t just need to be of the Premier standing up with his hour or so of talk that he does every day’.

“Now, in Victoria at the moment we have 191 active cases. We have had a lot of people who have had the virus and recovered. We have only got 21 people in hospital, and we have no cases in intensive care.

“So when this pandemic hit—this novel virus that we had no experience of—all government departments were in theory prepared because they all had their influenza pandemic plans.

“Most of them left them in the bottom drawer, because if you look at the influenza pandemic plans— MsAllan interjected.

Ms McLeish: “I think the Leader of the House at the table actually does not know what is in those, because if you look at them it talks about a novel virus—a strain that we have not dealt with before.

“The detail in those exactly describes the Coronavirus, and I think that dusting those off early on would have perhaps helped.

“Now Victoria is out of step with the rest of the country. The rest of the country actually did what was asked: flattened the curve. We did a really good job.And then in Victoria - Victoria alone—that curve took off rapidly and we saw spikes of incredible numbers.

“We have seen over 800 deaths now, which is pretty tragic, I think, and most people really look at that as a blight on the government.

“We see this government as having failed on every level. These failures come on top of lots of dodgy practices and things that we saw last term.

“You know, we saw the red shirts rorts and we have also seen this year the loss of three ministers before we really got into the nitty-gritty here.

“So in June we lost three ministers and now we have lost a fourth minister. Usually for a government to lose one minister that is fairly bad.

Two, you know, is almost unheard of. But three and now four ministers out of this Andrews government is a pretty sad tale for the Premier and his government, and I think if you look at that loss of confidence in the ministers and their loss of confidence, it goes downhill from there.

“At the moment, with the restrictions, we have got failures around the school photographers. There is an enormous number of schoolkids— over 400,000 school students—that are yet to be photographed.

“This is distressing for the schools, the families and certainly the photographers who own the businesses. I have had so many school photographers speak to me about this, and they are concerned.

“It is safe for kids to be back at school—very safe. We can see all the primary kids there—we know that for the year 8s and 10s it is safe too but the government is holding off—and photography is something that can be done at a distance. The photographers themselves can wear masks.

“If we have a look at what has been going on in the world for the school photographers for most of this year, a lot of them have other jobs as well. They might photograph weddings, and the wedding industry has been decimated, so these people are without income at all.

“Music lessons: I am hearing from people who conduct the music lessons, from school principals, from school music teachers, from music teachers themselves and from heads of performing arts at some schools, because they know that there are kids out there in their schools who do woodwind instruments, who do brass instruments, and they think that this can be done safely. With no consultation with them, these have been withdrawn.

“Some of these businesses are out on their own, and it is tough. If they rent a space in a shopping strip or a studio, they have to invest in gear. I have constituents in the Mansfield shire who are unable to resume.

“They are not even sure if they are ever going to be able to get back and reopen, because of the money that they have lost with so much of their savings.

“One of them said they have got a friend who can run a music therapy session but they cannot teach that same kid piano. They know that they can teach piano or guitar in a studio following social distance guidelines whilst wearing a mask. They have been absolutely screwed.

“We have got a lot of small business owners and operators. We have people who own shops, rental roperties and holiday properties that

are empty. At shopping strips and centres in High Street in Northcote, Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn, Nepean Highway in Chelsea, the Pacific shopping centre in Werribee and Stockland in Point Cook, we know what is going on.

“These people—small business owners who put their own money on the line—are struggling. I take great offence at the Deputy Premier saying before, ‘These small business owners have put their dreams on hold’.

“Well, I have got news for him: for a lot of people their dreams are not on hold, their dreams are gone.

Their dreams have been shattered.

Sole traders make up some 300,000 jobs—landscapers, gymnasium operators, window cleaners, dog groomers.

“We all know this because we have been getting emails that are cced to every member of the Labor government. We know that they know the pain, but have they responded? No, they have not.

“I speak to tourism groups regularly. They are worried about their futures. I have spoken to individuals and groups. Just recently my colleagues and I met with Yarra Valley businesses. These businesses include hot air balloons and planes in the aviation space, vineyards, restaurants, galleries, cafes, conference centres, bed and breakfasts.

“We know that weddings have been cancelled. There is not one booked in the Yarra Valley before March next year. Business owners have lost equity in the businesses that they have built up, and what do they get from the government?

“A deferral of payroll tax. Well, what does a deferral mean—‘We’re going to hit you with a double whammy when it becomes due’?

“They have got no income coming in. How are they going to pay these enormous payroll taxes?

“They are outraged at the density requirements. The Chocolaterie in the Yarra Valley was capped at 20 people, when in an enormous space with four square metres per person they could have had 66.

“I urge the government to revisit the density requirements. One size does not fit all. If you put a cap of 20 in small area, you should not be putting that cap on areas that are eight times that size. You need to look at each individually.

“The access to the grants program was totally inadequate. We have had emails pleading for the government to extend the Business Support Fund grant of $10,000 to those who are sole traders and selfemployed—the so-called ‘non-employing businesses’. One business said they operate at 25 per cent of capacity at the moment and they cannot get access because they do not have a WorkCover number.

“They do not need to, because their insurance policy tells them that it is unlikely that their employee payments are going to exceed $7500.

That is the threshold. They do not need to have that WorkCover payment cover. They can through their own insurance know that they are covered. But this was a hurdle that was put before these small businesses, and it is too high. It needs to be opened up more broadly.

“The small business operators that have spoken to me time and time again are struggling and will go out of business,” Ms McLeish said.

The exhibition is underpinned by four themes - Illumination, Reflection, Conservation, and Speculation - that invite audiences to embark on a journey of exploration and to discover the intersecting ideas through the works on display .

The four thematic pillars have emerged from the collective work presented in the NGV Triennial, illuminating the pressing concerns that preoccupy the artists.

Designers and architects of our time.

Drawing on intimacy and awe, sadness and beauty, ruination and inspiration, these themes present a microcosm of the modern works.

Free and exclusive to Melbourne, this is the second instalment of the NGV Triennial which is held every three years.

The inaugural exhibition held in 2017, remains the NGV's most attended exhibition to date, with 1.2 million visitors.

This show is Loaded

■ Malthouse Theatre’s premiere production of Loaded is unable to proceed on the stage as planned for Season 2020 due to current live theatre restrictions, so will be reimagined as an immersive four-part digital audio experience.

Award-winning Melbourne playwright and theatre-maker Dan Giovannoni (Turbine) has teamed up with Christos Tsiolkas (The Slap) to adapt Tsiolkas’s 1995 debut novel into an audio experience—rewriting Ari’s odyssey from a 21st century perspective.

Directed by Stephen Nicolazzo (Merciless Gods) and featuring Roy Joseph (Five Bedrooms), this queer migrant history follows 19year-old Ari—a Greek, gay, and unemployed adolescent in 90s Melbourne—as he searches for an escape, of sorts, via sex, drugs, and dance clubs.

In partnership with The Wheeler Centre, Malthouse Theatre will run a companion panel event, Reloading Loaded with author Christos Tsiolkas, writer Dan Giovannoni, director Stephen Nicolazzo, and facilitated by Rebecca Harkins-Cross. The panel members will discuss Melbourne scenes, adaptation hurdles, and why Ari is a character that never gets old.

On the decision to adapt Loaded from the stage to an audio experience, Malthouse Theatre’s Artistic Director and Co-CEO, Matthew Lutton said: ‘It’s devastating not being able to experience Loaded live at The Malthouse, but we’re fortunate that Loaded is a story that lends itself brilliantly to a sonic experience.

"Ari’s 24 hour romp through Melbourne is perfect for a theatrical work designed to transport you through music and words.

With the team located in various states, creative solutions enabled the production to take place in a digital space.

Director Stephen Nicolazzo said: ‘We’ve been working on Loaded for almost two years, and like my first encounter adapting Christos’s robust, brutal and tender material for the stage, it has been a deeply personal and soulful experience.

“Bringing the work into the realm of audio has illuminated the sheer brilliance of his and Dan Giovannoni’s adaptation and stretched me as a director in ways I could never have imagined.”

Creating the experience as an audio play, Daniel Nixon said: “Christos is a delight, the inherent musicality of his text is a dream to

Single Ladies ■ Single Ladies, written by Michele Lee, was developed through Red Stitch's INK playwriting program and in its first week of previews in March, when having to close due to pandemic restrictions.

To ensure the show goes on, during lockdown with the support of the City of Yarra, Creative Victoria and Red Stitch Theatre, Michele has developed a series of short audio works based on the three characters from Single Ladies Anne (in her 70s), Lilike (50s) and Rachel (20s).

Directed by Bagryana Popov, Single Ladies Now is an introduction to the three women, immediately before the plot of the play begins.

The monologues have provided an opportunity for the creative team to delve deeper into the characters, and for the actors to inhabit their roles in a different context and deliver in a different medium.

Set in the sanitised grunge of Collingwood, Anne, Lilike and Rachel are from different gen-

erations and backgrounds and hold different allegiances to their neighbourhood.

● Roland Perry ■ As I lay claim to being a Crazy Cat Lady, any book that celebrates a feline is going to attract my attention.

Best-selling author Roland Perry has just released Red Lead, the story of the Australian ship's cat who survived the sinking of HMAS Perth and the Thai-Burma railway.

They say that cats have nine lives, and it sounds like Red Lead used a few of hers up but her story has survived to be told by her admirer Roland Perry.

Roland was only eight when he heard about the cat that survived the sinking of HMAS Perth in World War II. Red Lead was the ship's cat, much loved by the crew and by her captain, Hector Waller.

Red Lead travelled with the ship for three and a half years, from Java to Changi and then on the Thai-Burma Railway.

Red Lead was the companion, mascot and sometime protector for a small group of sailors who made it their mission to keep her alive in the prison camp that was hell on earth.

Roland says he wanted to write about this amazing feline survivor because it is an inspirational true story of the bond between man and animal.

"They become dependent on each other for survival in hostile territory and against uncompromising enemies from within and without," Roland explains.

Roland says the book will obviously appear to cat lovers, but animal lovers in general will enjoy it, and he says that those who wish to comprehend the struggle to survive under far tougher conditions than the current Pandemic will be inspired.

"The obstacles met en route through South East Asia, and the character and courage needed to overcome them makes the challenges in the TV series Survivor appear weak by comparison, " he reflects.

Roland Perry has written 35 books on subjects ranging from Don Bradman to the Australian Light Horse, and Red Lead sounds like the perfect book to give a cat lover for Christmas.

Study on migraines

■ The Spring Carnival started last Saturday with the running of the Caufield Cup. The West Hollywood connection is that the Managing Director of the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites, Alan Johnson, won the Caufield Cup back in 1976 with 'How Now' trained by Colin Hayes with jockey John Stocker on board.

Exciting times for Alan Johnson who then went on to win the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast with his good friend Wally Mariani with 'Dancers Joy'.

It will be a different Spring Carnival this year with COVID19 restrictions with the horse racing crowds.

Mad Max is back ■ George Miller is back to direct and co-write Furiosa with Nico Lathouris, an origin story based on the character played

by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Taylor-Joy, whose credits include Emma, Split and Glass, will play the lead in the movie which tracks the genesis of the fierce warrior Furiosa before she teamed up with Tom Hardy's Max Rockatansky in Fury Road.

Deadline did not specify the roles to be played by Hemsworth, who is set to star in WB's Thor: Love & Thunder, or Abdul-Mateen II, who starred as super villain Black Manta in James Wan's Aquaman.

Currently the latter is filming the fourth installment in The Matrix series, directed by Lana Wachowski and starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith.

He plays Bobby Seale in Netflix's The Trial of the Chicago 7 and stars in Universal/MGM's Candyman, which opens next year.

His credits include Us and The Greatest Showman. Taylor-Joy recently finished filming Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho and is currently filming Robert Eggers' The Northman.

According to Deadline, Furiosa is in advanced development. Miller will produce with his long-time producing partner Doug Mitchell.

Death on Two And A Half Men

■ Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer and more of Conchata Ferrell's co-stars are paying tribute to the actress following the news of her death. Ferrell, who played housekeeper Berta alongside Sheen and Cryer on Two and a Half Men died on Tuesday, October 14 as a result of complications following a cardiac arrest.

She was 77. "An absolute sweetheart, a consummate pro, a genuine friend, a shocking and painful loss," tweeted Sheen, who played Charlie Harper on the show. "Berta, your housekeeping was a tad suspect. Your 'people' keeping was perfect."

Jon Cryer, who starred as Charlie's brother Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men, remembered his friend, who he nicknamed 'Chatty'.

"She was a beautiful human," he tweeted. "Berta's gruff exterior was an invention of the writers. Chatty's warmth and vulnerability were her real strengths. I'm crying for the woman I'll miss, and the joy she brought so many."

■ A New Jersey woman is facing criminal charges after prosecutors say she tried to dupe the public out of thousands of dollars with a GoFundMe campaign seeking donations for her dead son's funeral, the same son she'd actually given up for adoption.

Holly Garcia, 33, was taken into custody in late September and now faces charges of computer criminal activity and attempted theft by deception, the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

Garcia wound up on police radar in June after a couple who had adopted her 4-year-old son alerted authorities to a GoFundMe campaign using his photo to seek $5000 in funeral expenses after he had supposedly died of cancer, authorities said.

She is said to have created a slew of other fundraising campaigns, including one seeking assistance to care for her toddler son who was going blind in one eye, and another seeking money to buy an urn for her dead son's ashes. Prosecutors say GoFundMe caught wind of the schemes before she could collect any of the donations. She made her first appearance in court last week and now faces possible indictment by a grand jury.

■ Sexual minorities are significantly more likely to experience migraines than heterosexuals, according to a new report suggesting minority stress and discrimination may be the culprit.

Researchers interviewed more than 9800 adults from the ages of 31 to 42 as part of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent toAdult Health.

"We know stress in general can trigger migraines, and since sexual minorities experience discrimination and added stress, it seems logical that could trigger migraines."

Just over 85 per cent of respondents identified as exclusively heterosexual, 10 percent were "mostly" heterosexual but somewhat attracted to the same sex and about 4 per cent identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual. (The survey did not encompass gender identity).

Gay, lesbian and bisexual participants had 58 percent higher odds of a migraine than their strictly heterosexual counterparts.

The "mostly straight" participants had an increased rate of migraines equal to other sexual minorities. Migraine headaches often produce an intense throbbing pain on one side of the head, though both sides can be affected. They can last hours or even days and be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and a sensitivity to light, sound or other sensory input.

Dumbing down ■ Social media platform Pinterest announced that it would be limiting recommendations for Halloween costumes that could be considered culturally insensitive.

The photo-sharing company issued a statement on its website announcing the move, adding that it would be prohibiting "advertisements with culturally inappropriate costumes, and make it possible for Pinners to report culturally-insensitive content right from Pins."

The platform also said that certain searches, including "Day of the Dead costumes," will lead users to information developed by experts and Pinterest employee group PIndigenous "on how to celebrate thoughtfully and respectfully."

■ How many of your childhood math or science lessons do you remember today? If the answer is barely any, you aren't alone.

A recent survey of 2000 US parents finds the average parent these days has the math and science skills of an 11-yearold.

Respondents were asked what grade they would be placed in today if they had to take a placement test, and the average answer was sixth grade for both math and science.

It's unrealistic to expect anyone to remember everything they were taught in school as a child, of course.

Yet the extent to which many American adults feel clueless when it comes to academics is shocking. In all, 42 per cent say they would be "lost" trying to teach their child mathematics. Another 35 per cent express the same sentiment regarding scientific topics.

Bond release 2021 ■ MGM's No Time to Die is officially heading to April 2, Easter weekend, and vacating its November 20 release date.

Interestingly enough, this puts the James Bond film starring Daniel Craig on the same weekend with Universal's F9.

I hear that the latter is bound to move. Universal is providing no comment on that release date change. Update: The F9 release date indeed has changed..

"MGM, Universal and Bond producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, announced the release of No Time To Die, the 25th film in the James Bond series, will be delayed until April 2 in order to be seen by a worldwide theatrical audience.

We understand the delay will be disappointing to our fans but we now look forward to sharing No Time To Die next year," said the studio in a statement. MGM was the first studio to foresee how the pandemic was going to stall exhibition, and jumped No Time to Die from its Easter weekend release date of April 10-12 to the Thanksgiving frame.

■ It is hard to believe, but it is more than 100 years ago since Lucille Ball was born. Today, she lives on through her films and re-runs of her television shows such as I Love Lucy, Here's Lucy and The Lucy Show.

I thought she was just fabulous. I can remember the first time I saw Lucille Ball in a film - it was at a Saturday afternoon matinee in 1951 and I laughed at her antics in the Fuller Brush Girl playing opposite Eddie Albert.

Lucille Désirée Ball was born on August 6th 1911 in Jamestown, New York. The family moved around a lot due to her father's occupation.

After he died in 1915, Lucille's mother remarried. It was her grandfather who took Lucille and her brother Frederick to see vaudeville shows. Lucille was enthralled and decided to be an actress.

She managed to get work in the chorus of Broadway shows before going to Hollywood where her first small on-screen appearance was in a film titled The Bowery which starred George Raft and Wallace Beery.

Lucille persevered but it took her two years and almost 30 film appearances before she was even listed in the credits.

Lucille met and eloped with Cuban-born bandleader Desi Arnaz in 1940. It was a stormy relationship and although Lucille filed for divorce in 1944 they reconciled and continued their marriage.

By Kevin Trask of 3AW and 96.5 Inner FM Lucille dyed her hair red and appeared in films such as Lover Come Back, Easy To Wed and Sorrowful Jones. In 1949 Lucille was cast in the successful radio series, My Favourite Husband, playing opposite Richard Denning.

When the show was being considered for a television series Lucille insisted that Desi Arnaz be cast as her husband. The next door neighbors were to be played by Vivien Vance and William Frawley (who loathed each other off-screen).

The first episode of I love Lucy was broadcast in October of 1951. The show went to air ‘live’ in front of a studio audience in LosAngeles and was kinescoped for airing on the East Coast.

Desi stepped in when there was a problem

● Lucille Ball with the quality of the film and the show was going to be dropped - Desi paid for quality filming and introduced the three-camera technique on the condition that their company, Desilu, retained the rights to the film stock after the episodes had been aired for the first time.

It was a ‘master stroke’ as the show has now been in syndication throughout the world for 60 years.

In later years the Desilu Studios produced

shows such as The Untouchables, Star Trek, Mission Impossible and My Three Sons.

Lucy and Desi had two children Lucie and Desi Jnr. I Love Lucy was in production till 1960 and when it finished Lucy and Desi divorced.

Lucy continued her television career in Here's Lucy and The Lucy Show. She married her second husband Garry Morton in 1961.

Lucy was very busy with her Broadway show Wildcat, managing Desilu Studios, television shows and appearing in films such as the title role in Mame.

Desi Arnaz passed away in 1986 and Lucy died in 1989. Her final public appearance was at the Academy Awards just four weeks before her death.

Although they had gone their separate ways Lucy and Desi still loved and respected each other.

Lucille Ball was one of the greatest comedienne's of the twentieth century and as we watch those old shows on television - there is no doubt - we still love Lucy.

■ The franchise for the TV show The Voice has transferred from Nine to Seven for season 2021. It has been confirmed that Boy George has taken a pay cut to remain on the judges panel. The eason i s the severe slashing of the overall production budget. Hopefully that doesn’t damage the entertainment value of the show.

Celebrity Apprentice

■ Nine will be proceeding with a new season of Celebrity Apprentice in 2021. Mark Bouris has been replaced as host, the new kid on the block is UK presenter Lord Alan Sugar.

Afraid most of the contestants and judging panel mean nothing to me except for funnyman Ross Noble, founder of Boost Juice Janine Allis , The Veronicas and Anthony Callea. On air date is yet to be announced.

■ TV stations have been scheduling a record number of repeats during COVID-19. Nine’s digital channel 9GEM has been playing some of the best repeats of local productions. One I noticed was repeats of crazy acts with Don Lane and Bert Newton from The Don Lane Show of the eighties. Also on the same channel was a young Rebecca Gibney in one of the early episodes of Halifax. So for a bit of nostalgia tune your dial to 9GEM .

Trump, the series follows FBI director James Comey in the run-up to the 2016 election, and into the early months of Donald Trump's presidency, and how these two powerful men with strikingly different ethics and loyalties put them on a collision course.

Also starring Holly Hunter, Jennifer Ehle, William Sadler, Scoot McNary and Oona Chaplin, and based on the memoir "A Higher Loyalty" by James Comey, the high profile events in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election and the presidency itself come vividly to life from the boardrooms of the FBI and the Oval Office, a revealing insight that unfolds like a thriller in the vein of "All The President's Men" as the Hilary Clinton email scandal, computer hacking, election tipping, the issue of the contacts between Trump's campaign and Russia, and Trump's visit to Russia, it all makes for solid and at times compelling viewing, but it's not without its flaws.

Jeff Daniels gives a gives a strong and respectful performance as former FBI Director, James Comey, however, even though Brendan Gleeson gives a firm and colourful performance as President Donald Trump, it at times borders on parody, but when all is said and done, the second part weakens due its excessive length, and because of the freshness of the events a strong sense of deja vu may reduce impact, but overall, even though it isn't "All The President's Men," it's still a solid and worthy viewing experience, and no matter which side you're on, there'll be much to debate long after it's over. Stars: *** RUSH (DVD, Blu-Ray & Streaming on NETFLIX): You don't have to be a racing fan at all to be firmly gripped by Rush, the adrenalin fuelled re-creation of the bitter rivalry between Formula One racing legends James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the 1970's.

This is an astonishing achievement from Ron Howard, the Oscar winning director of such films as Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Cocoon and The Da Vinci Code, to name a few, who delivers with a tight grip every moment of the way.

Chris Hemsworth gives a career best performance as James Hunt, as does Daniel Bruhl as Niki Lauda, all driven by a tremendously taut and intelligent screenplay by Oscar nominated scribe Peter Morgan, whose other credits include the acclaimed "The Queen," "The Last King of Scotland," "The Other Boleyn Girl," "The Crown," "Frost/Nixon" and "Bohemian Rhapsody," to name a few.

Everything about this film excels on every level as you are thrust firmly in the hot seat right in with these waring rivals, and thrust along with the racing sequences are simply mind boggling, so much so, you'd swear it was the real thing.

Aided along by startling cinematography by Oscar winner Anthony Dod Mantle (T2: Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), a standout music score (by Hans Zimmer), and lightning speed editing, along with the recent "Ford v Ferrari," this is a hugely entertaining, totally captivating and pulse pounding experience! ■ Oct 29 - Nov 5. The 11th Korean Film Festival in Australia, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will this year screen online, and what is great news for avid movie goers is that they will be available for free.

There is a total of 18 films making up the program for 2020, and although I haven't seen all of them, it looks like a pretty impressive lineup.

For fans of international cinema, this is a ray of cinematic light during what has been a dour year; but it is also the perfect opportunity for those who have yet to experience the type of world-class cinema South Korea has to offer.

Baseball Girl. 105 minutes. ***½ Formulaic but charming drama that centres on a high school girl who desperately wants to succeed in the male-dominated world of baseball. The characters are believable and nicely etched, and Lee Joo-young is excellent in the title role.

By Quantum Physics: A Nightlife Venture. 120 minutes. ***½ A flashy, newly opened nightclub is at the centre of numerous criminal encounters by celebrities, prosecutors and politicians. Stylish, compelling drama suddenly became relevant after the 2019 Burning Sun scandal.

Bring Me Home. 108 minutes. **** Lee Young-ae excels in her first big screen appearance since 2005, playing a mother whose young son has been missing for six years, and the horrors she encounters when information brings her to a quiet fishing village.

The Man Standing Next. 114 minutes. **** Fascinating true-life drama/ thriller that details the 40 days leading up to the assassination of the South Korean President in 1979.

Would make a great double with the 2005 black comedy/thriller The President's Last Bang.

Kim Ji-young, Born 1982. 119 minutes. *** Based on the best-selling book, this heartfelt, very well-acted drama unfortunately excises too much detail, and somewhat shifts the focus away from the author's critical examination of systemic gender inequality. Still a film that needs to be seen.

Our Body. 95 minutes. **** Quietly potent look at a 31 yearold woman's journey of self-discovery, and the rigid framework that society places on women, both personally and professionally. A terrific directorial debut for Han Ka-ram, bolstered by a beautifully measured performance by Choi Hee-seo.

My Punch-Drunk Boxer. 114 minutes. *** A largely entertaining mix of humour and drama, involving a disgraced boxer diagnosed with punch-drunk syndrome, who wants to make a comeback. The situation changes when he meets new gym member Min-ji (nicely played by ex Girl's Day member Hyeri).

There are many poignant and funny moments, but some jarring scenes affect the film's overall impact.

Again, a film filled with strong performances.

Forbidden Dream. 133 minutes. ***½ Veteran film-maker Hur Jin-ho expertly glides this period true story over its surprisingly benign atmosphere. Strong production values, and superbly anchored by its two seasoned stars, Choi Min-sik and Han Suk-kyu.

Maggie. 89 minutes. *** Strikingly offbeat comedy/ drama that is a little too episodic to satisfy as a whole. Still has a lot to recommend, and I look forward to see what debutant director Yi Okseop does next.

The House Of Us. 92 minutes. **** Writer/director Yoon Ga-eun follows up her outstanding 2016 drama The World Of Us, concentrating on a new group of girls who are trying to deal with that fine line between childhood fantasy and harsh reality. Yoon's treatment of the subject is exquisite, and the three young stars are simply marvellous.

Enjoying the fruit of their labours ■ Apart from a brief stint on his arrival and a later move to Queensland to take up a sugar cane cutting job, Stefano DiGiorgio has always held interests in the Lucindale district of the Limestone Coast, and has been acquiring land and developing farming businesses in the Lucindale district since first arriving.

This was through the contracting of services to local councils and farmers.

From 1956, he and his family have worked in the area.

During his early years in Australia Stefano worked in several farming operations and was admired for his ability to take on any challenge handed to him.

Stefano and his wife Rita have four children, Frank, Nanni, Anna and Nicky.

Today the entire family work passionately in the family business and have proved a formidable team.

The DiGiorgio family farm covers a vast area and includes cattle, sheep and wool production together with interests in horticultural produce as well as viticulture.

In 1989 the family set aside four hectares on their Lucindale farm for vines.

After much consideration of microclimate, average sunlight hours, water supply and soil testing, the first two hectares of pinot noir and two hectares of cabernet sauvignon were planted.
