Superloads in NE ■ The Longwood and Locksley communities have become aware of the State Labor Government’s plans to move up to five superloads of pre-cast concrete per week for the next two years, says Wendy Lovell, MLC for Northern Victoria.

The loads are being transferred from Benalla to Melbourne for use on the West Gate Tunnel Project by road using the Hume Freeway with a detour via Longwood and Locksley.

This detour is made necessary because the historic Pranjip Bridge on the south bound carriageway of the Hume Freeway cannot carry the weight of the superloads which will be around 160 tonnes.

The loads will also be approx. 52 metres long, 4.5 metres wide, and 5 metres high.

The superloads move slowly at only about 25kmh but ar noisy and involve vehicle and pedestrian escorts. Ms Lovell said.

They usually travel at night and are lit up like daylight.

Firearms incident

■ Fawkner detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a firearms incident in Broadmeadows last week.

Police were called to the area after reports of gunshots being heard about 5.25pm on Tuesday (Aug. 11). It is believed the shots were fired into the front of a house Wharton Ave. The occupants, a 56-year-old woman and a 1-year-old boy, were unharmed.

Operator assault

■ Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit are investigating following an incident in Hoppers Crossing. Investigators understand a traffic camera car was operating on Mossfiel Drive around 11.40am on August 6. Two males approached the operator, attempted to open the locked doors, and made demands to move the vehicle.

Arrest after burg

■ Patrolling police arrested a Blackburn South teenager after an aggravated burglary in Ashwood. The alarm was raised after the victims, who were upstairs at their Teck St property, heard their front door close. They ran downstairs to find their front-yard sensor light was on and a male sitting in the driver’s seat of their car. The teen who ran from the scene was arrested in Cleveland Rd.

Hunt for Ella, 13

■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing girl Ella Cartwright.

The 13-year-old was last seen at a home in Russell Rd, Seville on Wednesday (Aug. 12) about 6pm.

Police and family hold concerns for Ella’s welfare due to her young age.

Hunt for gold

■ Mining company Torrens Mining has applied for exploration licences covering most of Mitchell Shire in the belief the area could yield significant gold deposits.

The company has already been granted an exploration licence covering a large part of the area, stretching from Tooborac and Pyalong in the north west to Nulla Vale in the south west, and Sugarloaf Creek in the east.

■ Indi MHR Dr Helen Haines is in 14day mandatory lockdown quarantine in Canberra prior to the next sitting of Federal Parliament. Dr Haines has been advocating about the border lockdown affecting the North-East. Strath Creek is mourning the passing of local couple David Wakefield and Laurie MacMillan, who ended their lives. They were foundation members of the Strath Creek Environment Group, which became the Strath Creek Landcare Group.

They assisted with the Focus on Fauna website after the 2009 fires, and helped with the preservation of Coonans Reserve. They were joint recipients of the Hubert MillerAward, the Ruth Solly Award, and the Tehan Perpetual Trophy.

Community leaders Susan King and Terry Hubbard issued a notice: “It is clear that David and Laurie had made a decision to leave this world at a time of their choosing, that they had put in place a process for that to happen and which they had beedn working toward for some time.”

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Chris Marshall.

Working for Murrindindi ■ Murrindindi Shire Council has welcomed 24 new staff members from the State Government's Working for Victoria initiative.

The newest recruits are helping with a variety of outdoor projects, including woody weed removal, planting, infrastructure cleansing, road, bridge and sign repairs and Rail Trail maintenance over the next six months.

They are also helping the Parks and Gardens crews fast-track a program of works in Marysville, Alexandra, Yea, Kinglake and Eildon, which includes garden maintenance such as trimming of shrubs, mulching, replanting, re-painting of street furniture and restaining of bollards.

The Working for Victoria teams were hard at work on UT Creek, planting around 300 plants to help stabilise the river bank.

These plants included Lomandra, Goodenia, Tree Violet, Gold Dust Wattle, Sweet Bursaria and River Bottlebrush.

Over the past couple of years, planting has been carried out by both St Mary's Primary School and Alexandra Primary School students and Council hopes to continue adding to their work.

Hwy questions unanswered ■ Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish wasn't holding her breath waiting for a response from Roads Minister Jaala Pulford regarding Maroondah Hwy roadworks.

Ms McLeish raised the controversial issue in Parliament in March, questioning the decision by the Andrews Government not to consult the community directly when making changes to the busy highway between Coldstream and Healesville. The minister has failed to respond.

"The road upgrade has been a public ongoing issue and it is disappointing the minister has failed to address it,” Ms McLeish said.

"VicRoads missed multiple opportunities to discuss planned changes with the surrounding community.

“Consultation that took place early this year regarding the Black Spur would have been the perfect time to discuss planned works.

“There has been no communication and the situation has gone from bad to worse. Now in the midst of COVID-19 - consultation will be even more difficult."

Ms McLeish said VicRoads failed to address the backlash from the community after announcing plans to reduce the speed limit from 100kmh to 80kmh.

Since then, further changes have been made

"The community were already frustrated with how the situation has been handled. Postponing the project has only aggravated locals more, especially since the reason provided was 'cold and wet conditions'.

“Roadworks are certainly operating in other locations around the state during winter such as nearby Canterbury Rd and Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd. It is simply not good enough. People in the Yarra Valley are being ignored."

Fundraisers need approval ■ Organisations seeking donations from the public in Victoria are subject to strict fundraising laws and regulations overseen by Consumer Affairs Victoria, led by director Simon Cohen.

“When you are raising money it is important that you comply with all the relevant legislation and regulations surrounding fundraising,” says The Funding Centre.

Some exemptions apply. “You need an authority to fundraise in Victoria only if you raise more than $20,000 per financial year and/or have paid staff.”

Consumer Affairs Victoria says a fundraiser is “any person or organisation, including a business, that collects money for a beneficiary, cause or thing, rather than solely for their own profit or commercial benefit”.

The CAV website says directors of a company applicant need to complete application paperwork prior to starting their fundraising activities.

A criminal record and personal insolvency declaration is required. It normally takes 28 days to complete registrations.

“Any person or organisation that undertakes fundraising must register as a fundraiser unless they are exempt from registration,” says CAV.

Papers chase donations ■ The North Central Review newspaper, owned by the Mott family of Whittlesea and Wallan, is asking readers to donate amounts of $5 upwards.

The well-to-do publishers are making a similar request through their Alexandra Standard and Yea Chronicle newspapers.

Under their ‘Pay It Forward’ scheme, the donated monies subsidise advertising orders by local businesses.

The end recipients of the donated monies would appear to beNorth Central Review Pty Ltd and Alexandra Newspapers Pty Ltd, owned by the Mott family.

Last week, it was revealed that North Central Review Pty Ltd would be recipients of a $119,410 grant from the Liberal Federal Government.

Further grant monies will be given to the Alexandra Standard and Yea Chronicle.

■ Estia Health Yarra Valley has now successfully tested all residents and staff for COVID-19, with no further positive cases returned.

On August 3, the Yarra Junction-based aged care received advice that one of its employees had tested positive to COVID-19.

According to Estia Health, the employee had not worked at the home since testing positive and was self-isolating.

In a statement, Estia Health said “all residents and other employees have returned negative COVID-19 tests to date.”

■ Melbourne Airport’s request for a $6 million rates waiver has been knocked back by Hume Council.

Australia Pacific Airports (Melbourne), which owns MelbourneAirport, made a submission to the council’s 2020-21 budget, urging councillors to consider reducing its rates bill for the next 12 months.

APAM’s corporate and public affairs executive, Jai McDermott, said passenger numbers had dropped dramatically, with just 73,000 passengers passing through the airport in May, compared to the long-term average of three million passengers.

Food security jeopardised ■ Union politics is jeopardising food security at a time of crisis, says Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish.

Ms McLeish is standing with her colleagues to defend the agriculture industry against a union call to end the Working Holiday MakerVisa.

If the union is successful, backpackers will be unable to work, leaving farmers without their major workforce contributor.

"Removing the visa will cause detrimental hardships for farmers who rely on labour hire,” Ms McLeish said.

“It will also push up the price of fruit and vegetables at a time when our communities need a reliable, affordable supply of fresh food.

"Agriculture is the lifeblood of our regional community and my electorate, all the way from the Yarra Valley to Mansfield.

Owner of Rayner's Orchard, Len Rayner, says the removal of the licence will have a damaging effect on larger farms as it is difficult to get people to do the work. It's an ongoing problem, the work is there, the workers aren't.

"If you took the licence away from the big farms, if you took international backpackers away, there would be no workforce, especially up in the country. Unions don't understand agriculture in rural parts of Australia."

D. Creek Red Cross ■ The local branch of the Red Cross Society held a wind-up social in the local Public Hall on the 4th inst. There was a good attendance. Cr. R. J. Lorimer occupied the chair.

Dancing, interspersed with harmony, provided the chief part of the entertainment.

During the evening framed certificates were presented on behalf of the members of the branch to Mrs. Finlay (President), Miss Letch (Secretary), and Mrs. Paul (Treasurer), in token of appreciation of their services.

Certificates of the head Society were presented to twenty-two other members who had been workers for three years or more.

■ One of the finest entertainments given in Healesville for many years was the concert organised by the Healesville Brass Band, which took place at Cherry's Hall, on Friday evening last. There was a big attendance and many estimated at about 50 were unable to gain admission. Doors opened at 7.30, and at 7.45 the band set the ball rolling by playing selections outside the hall. The lively tunes hurried the people along, and by 8 o'clock the hall was well filled.

Hunter cellar door re-opens ■ Gartelmann Wines has ushered in their new vintage shiraz to coincide with the reopening of their Hunter Valley Cellar door as COVID restrictions ease for winemakers in NSW. The new wines comprise their recently repackaged red wine flagship, the 2016 Gartelmann 'Diedrich' Shiraz ($50), which partners the 2017 Gartelmann 'Wilhelm' Shiraz ($28).

For many years Jorg and Jan Gartelmann have built solid relationships with a number of grape growers across the Hunter Valley, Orange, Rylstone and Mudgee.

The best shiraz from each vintage is earmarked for their icon wine, the Gartelmann Diedrich which is named in honour of Jorg's much loved grandfather.

In 2016 the vintage in the Orange region proved ideal. Rain in January ensured good soil moisture leading into vintage, with the dry February and March allowing the fruit to ripen fully in the cool climate. The grapes were picked on the March 10.

This single vineyard wine was matured for 16 months in a combination of new and one-to-threeyear-old puncheons and hogsheads (both American and French) in order to build complexity and balance with the aromatic and elegant fruit.

The wine further matured in the bottle for three years prior to release.

TWO OF A KIND ● National Jazz Awards winner 2012: Kristin Berardi (Vocals) ■ Submissions are now invited for the National Jazz Awards.

Organised as part of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, each year the National Jazz Awards focus on a different instrument. In 2020, the focus is on voice.

“This year has been a time of great uncertainty for festivals, artists, and the Creative Industries as a whole,” Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues Chair, Dave Fuller said.

“Under these circumstances, we are particularly pleased to move ahead with the delivery of the National Jazz Awards,” he said.

"This is a great opportunity for the many talented vocal musicians across the country to take part in these nationally renowned Awards.”

High-level Australian vocalists aged 36 or younger are invited to submit their application by August 31. Full details of the Awards and how to enter are available on the Festival website.

Over three decades, the Awards have played an important role in developing, showcasing, and nurturing Australian talent. Many past winners and finalists have gone on to achieve both national and international acclaim.

Each year the focus is on a different instrument - piano, guitar, bass, saxophone, brass, drums, or vocals. In 2012 vocalist Kristin Berardi took out first prize. Previous winners include Alex Hirlian (drums), James Macauley (Brass), Sam Anning (Bass), Carl Morgan (Guitar), Zac Hurren (Brass), Phil Stack (Bass), Julien Wilson (Brass), Scott Tinkler (Brass), Michelle Nicolle (Vocals) and Barney McAll (Piano).

The 2020 National Jazz Award semi-finals and finals will be held in Wangaratta on the weekend of October 30 – November 1, 2020. They will be conducted in strict accordance with the COVID19 restrictions in place at the time and a full COVID Safe Plan will be implemented with the safety of all participants at the forefront.

As audience attendance restrictions are likely to be in place, but as yet are unknown at this stage, the Awards heats and finals will be live-streamed so that all interested audiences can enjoy the performances.

Mr Fuller said the prize pool has reduced as the philanthropic support that was previously in place has concluded, however further philanthropic support is being sought.

The prizes for the Awards are as follows: ■ 1st prize - $7,000 and a recording session with Pughouse Studios ■ 2nd prize - $4,000 ■ 3rd prize - $2,000 “The Awards have a strong reputation and are highly regarded regionally, nationally and internationally,” Mr Fuller said. “They are often a key launching pad in artists’ musical careers”.

■ Callum and Jackson McPartlaneof Bo’Ness caught the attention of music lovers nationwide with their recent success on The Voice Australia, and they’re already welcoming festival bookings.

Bo’Ness joined Team Kelly after the blind auditions, where they performed Paul Kelly’s hit, Dumb Things, and turned the chairs of Kelly Rowland and Boy George.

Under the mentorship of Kelly, they progressed through two more rounds, performing Circles with Charlie McFarlane, then Take It Easy.

Although a daunting experience, the artists soaked up all they could. “The Voice is like skydiving for musicians,” Callum said.

The twins also came away with plenty of new friends. “My favourite part of The Voice was the friendships we made and getting to know the crew and the artists,” Jackson said.

The 16-year-olds achieved their goals on The Voice Australia, wanting to increase not only awareness around their music, but also the causes they support, particularly action against domestic violence and bullying.

Last week they were announced as part of the line-up at Country Rocks being held in Bungendore in March 2021, with The Wolfe Brothers headlining. “We think it’s awesome and can’t wait to play the festival,” Jackson said.

The twins are keen to hit the stage and play in front of physical audiences again. “We are so excited to have this amazing opportunity, and grateful to be playing with such incredible artists,” Callum said.

“We wanted to write about our experiences we’d had with domestic violence, but tried to strip it back a little and not make it as obvious, so we’ve set the scene in the song, with the trees, and a carpet stain which refers to a house that only we would know about.”

“We want our songs to mean a lot to people and have a connection,” Jackson said. Callum said these were the kinds of songs they wanted to write.

The duo launched We Don’t Need This Town with an online event featuring musical family members Reece Mastin, Adam Brand, Matt Cornell, Mike Carr and Sam Hawksley and support videos from many more stars.

● Anna Thompson ■ Much is read in the news about how Year 12 students are coping with the most stressful year of their school lives being such a difficult one, with so much switching between on-campus and remote learning.

Eighteen-year-old Mountt Waverley Year 12 student, Anna Thompson, has used these challenges as the impetus to release her first single, called I'm Not. With the professional name of As Is, Anna is in her final year at Huntingtower School, a place well known for its high achievements in arts, music and academics.

Anna said she had always loved music and wanted to connect with her peers through her music, the way her own role models have spoken to her through their songs.

"I try to write raw lyrics that regular people like me will relate to. My main goal is to have someone listen to a song I've written and thinking 'I feel that!' or 'Wow, that's so beautiful!', as I find myself thinking about my favourite artists," Anna said.

This remarkably talented teen wrote, recorded, performed and produced the song from the confines of her bedroom - such is the ingenuity of a motivated artists in the time of iso.

Over the years, Anna has drawn confidence and reassurance from music when she was feeling belittled or uncomfortable in social situations, and she wants her music to help other people gain confidence the way she has.

"I love the power of these lyrics as they were written in a time where I felt I had little control, and these lyrics helped to empower me to stand up and become the best version of myself, and I want others to feel empowered by this song." Anna said.

Anna credits the encouragement from her family (which includes several music theatre professionals) and her close friends who she says have enabled her to do something of which she only ever dreamed.

■ Melbourne Theatre Company has announced the cancellation of its remaining 2020 Season.

Eleven of the 12 productions in MTC’s 2020 Season have now been cancelled or forced to close this year as a result of the ongoing COVID crisis and increased restrictions in Victoria.

The final two shows in the season – Girls & Boys and Sunshine Super Girl – were due to open in October and November, respectively.

In September, and after much rescheduling, MTC was due to rehearse and live stream to schools its Education Production, SLAP. BANG. KISS. This has also been cancelled.

MTC Artistic Director and CEO Brett Sheehy said: “This announcement is the dreaded conclusion to an incomprehensible year for MTC. While perhaps not a surprising outcome given the severity of the situation in Melbourne, these decisions don’t get any easier and it is no less upsetting news to share.” Some 345 jobs have been lost.

Research woman: blotto at Kalkallo

â– A female driver allegedly blew more than five times the legal limit after being pulled over at a police checkpoint in Kalkallo on Monday afternoon (Aug. 17).

Police were alerted by passing motorists of a white Toyota Corolla sedan allegedly seen driving erratically on the Hume Fwy about 3.25pm.

The 53-year-old woman was pulled over at the checkpoint where she underwent a breathtest.

Police were shocked when the woman returned an alleged reading of .277.

The Research woman was also found to be driving on a suspended licence.

Her car was impounded and she is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving.

For details go to www.heide.com.au The Collection: A significant part of the Heide Collection was assembled over five decades by John and Sunday Reed. Throughout their lives, the Reed's supported innovative contemporary art and promoted and encouraged artists who developed hew ways of creating and thinking about art. Many of these artists are now regarded as central figures on Australian modernism.

The Reeds collected a broad range of art from figurative to abstract, expressionist to realist.

Initially they acquired works by leading artists of the modernist movement in Australia.

During the 70s the Reeds began to collect the work of a younger generation of artists, contemporaries of their adopted son, Sweeney Reed. These included the artists Sweeney exhibited in his two galleries - Strines (1966 - 1969) and Sweeney Reed Gallery (1972 1975), such as Les Kossatz, Col Jordan, Sydney Bell, and John Krzywokulski.

Sweeney Reed's own text-based work is well represented in the Heide Collection, and the bequest of te Reed's close friend Barrett Reid.

Heide also holds an extensive support collection of artefacts, ephemera and archives relating to the history of Heide as the domestic residence of John and Sunday Reed and as a public institution, and to the artists and artworks represented in the Collection, Heide's current collecting priorities are to expand the representation of living Australian artists, in the spirit of the Reeds' support of the latest advances in contemporary art, to fill gaps in the representation of modernist art history, particularly as practised in Melbourne and to commission new works for the sculpture park.

New Public Housemuseum Galleries: Offering a new platform for works of contemporary art, architecture and design, the new public Housemuseum Galleries are a major extension of the Lyon Housemuseum Galleries. Opened in March 2019, the new Galleries offer a series of contemporary spaces where national and international exhibitions of art, architecture and design are presented.

Also designed by Lyon, the new Galleries include large flexible exhibition spaces specifically designed for large scale artworks and installations.

Featuring a 5.5 metre high ceiling, the central gallery space is surrounded by four peripheral galleries, each presenting a different character and aspect. A public forecourt and enclosed sculpture court extend the new museum beyond its walls.

Today the Collection holds over 350 works by over 50 artist, representing one of the largest collections of its type in the country.

What’s On One Act Plays

■ An invitation is extended to aspiring amateur writers of One Act Plays to have their work recognised and even performed for the first time.

Original One Act Plays, perhaps written when isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic, can be entered in the 19th year of the National Playwright Competition forOneAct Plays.

■ FrankstonArts Centre is offering some great at-home activities, including the LockDown Short Film Competition.

The film will capture the time in our lives when we entered or emerged from shutdown.

The LockDown Short Film Competition is open to any genre including fiction, documentary, animation and 'mash-up'.

Anyone living in the Frankston area aged over 16 years can submit a film, even if the very first film ever made and entirely created on a Smartphone.

■ The Port Fairy Folk Festival Committee has announced that the 2021 Festival will not go ahead.

President of the Port Fairy Folk Festival Committee, John Young, said this was the Festival’s most difficult decision to make in its 44-year history.

“Health and safety are at the forefront for the Port Fairy community. With restrictions on gatherings and too many uncertainties attached to the current global pandemic, we had to make this choice.

“The community, our volunteers, the hundreds of performers, the many contractors and of course the thousands of patrons involved are at the top of our minds when we are planning our annual festival. Rather than invest into a risky and unsafe time for live music and large gatherings, we will focus our energies on producing a truly wonderful Port Fairy Folk Festival experience in 2022.”

For over four decades, the Port Fairy Folk Festival has been presenting extraordinary international and local folk, blues and roots artists to thousands of music lovers each year over the March long weekend. The 45th Port Fairy Folk Festival will take place on March 11-14, 2022.

Trini Lopex dies at 83

■ Trinidad ‘Trini’ Lopez III died on August 11, according to the Palm Springs Life magazine, where he had been a resident since the 1960s.

Some of his other hits included Lemon Tree, I'm Comin' Home, Cindy and Sally Was a Good Old Girl.

A documentary film called My Name Is Lopez had just been completed on Lopez's life from filmmakers P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes, and the filmmakers had just shown a cut of the film to Lopez as recently as last week.

The directors hope to premiere it in 2021. Lopez also has some cult status as a designer of two vintage Gibson guitars that have since become collectors' items, the Gibson Trini Lopez Standard and the Gibson Trini Lopez Deluxe, which were in production from 1964 until 1971.

In all, Lopez scored 13 different singles that charted up through 1968, and in 1993 he was awarded a Golden Palm Star in his hometown of Palm Springs.

Good excuse to lose weight

■ A Coronavirus vaccine will likely be less effective in people who are obese, scientists say. Vaccines for other diseases including influenza, tetanus, rabies, and Hepatitis B have been shown to be less effective among obese people, a pattern that researchers say will likely continue with the vaccine scientists around the world are scrambling to deliver. "Will we have a COVID vaccine next year tailored to the obese? No way," Raz Shaikh, a nutrition associate professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, said. "Will it still work in the obese? Our prediction is no."

The issue is particularly of concern in the United States, where more than 107 million Americans are obese. Those with a body mass index over 30 are among those at the greatest risk of experiencing severe COVID-19 symptoms. This group encompasses about 42 percent of American adults.

Celebrities fund campaign ■ More than a dozen of the world's most famous celebrities are financing left-wing organisations that openly seek the defunding of America's police departments.

Actors, models and singers have donated large sums to left-wing organisations including Color of Change, Black Lives Matter Global Network and the Movement for Black Lives, all of which are open about their desire to defund police departments across the country.

The Movement for Black Lives aims to abolish not only police departments, butAmerica's prisons as well.

"We believe that prisons, police and all other institutions that inflict violence on Black people must be abolished and replaced by institutions that value and affirm the flourishing of Black lives," the website states.

Black Lives Matter Global Network, the national arm of Black Lives Matter, released a statement on May 30 calling for "a national defunding of police."

The organisation published a video on June 6 arguing that "defunding the police is the only way to stop pouring resources into a system that doesn't keep us safe."

■ Iran tried to cover up the extent of its Coronavirus outbreak by keeping nearly two-thirds of the country's deaths secret, according to a data leak obtained by BBC News.

Government records reportedly show that nearly 42,000 people have died with COVID-19 symptoms but the health ministry has only reported around 14,000.

The number of people confirmed to be infected is also almost double what the government said it was: 451,024 rather than 278,827.

Even those dubious official numbers make Iran the worsthit in the Middle East, but the leaked numbers show the outbreak was far worse than the government has tried to claim.

The data also reportedly shows that first COVID-19 death in Iran was recorded on Jan. 22, a month before the first official case of the Coronavirus was reported by the government. The BBC's unnamed source said they wanted to "shed light on truth" and end "political games" over the pandemic.

■ Minneapolis Police informed residents of the city's embattled 3rd Precinct to prepare for the giving up of their personal belongings to potential robbers, and advised them to do as criminals say for their own safety.

According to a July 28 email provided to Alpha News MN that was also forwarded to The Daily Wire, the Minneapolis Police Department offered "prevention tips" to residents hoping to avoid being a victim of the skyrocketing cases of robbery and carjacking that have plagued the city since George Floyd's death in May. "Robberies and carjacking's have increased in our Precinct," the email begins. "Cell phones, purses, and vehicles are being targeted. Some victims have been maced, dragged, assaulted, and some threatened with a gun. Most of these crimes have occurred north of 42nd St. E. 100 robberies and 20 carjackings have been reported to 3rd Precinct Police in July alone. Downtown and Southwest Minneapolis have seen an increase as well. We want those who live and work here to be safe."

■ The Ink Spots were a popular American singing group in the 1930s and 1940s.

I guess we were using ink pens and blotting paper back then, so the group name was very familiar to the teenagers in those days.

The group formed in the early 1930s as a trio King, Jack and Jester but soon became a group of four.

The original members were Orville ‘Hoppy’ Jones, Ivory ‘Deek’ Watson, Jerry Daniels and Charlie Fuqua.

The members all played instruments - mainly guitar. They changed their name to The Four Ink Spots at the suggestion of the famous bandleader Paul Whitman.

In 1934 they toured the UK with Jack Hylton's orchestra and played the Hippodrome and the London Palladium.

They were reviewed in Melody Maker magazine with the following comments The sensation of the programme is the coloured quartette, the Four Ink Spots.

They sing in a style something between the Mills Brothers and the Three Keys, and accompany themselves on three tenor guitars and a cello - which is not bowed, but picked and slapped like a double bass.

Their natural instinct for hot rhythm is exemplified in their terrific single-string solo work and their beautifully balanced and exquisitely phrased vocalisms.

The Ink Spots (their new name) first recorded for RCA Records in 1935, but although the group was growing rapidly in popularity their early record releases were not commercially successful.

In 1936 Jerry Daniels left the group and was replaced by Bill Kenny.

Bill introduced a new format with their songs - Bill would sing the first chorus then bass singer ‘Hoppy’ Jones would recite the lyrics and then Bill would sing the final chorus.

■ Wayne Fontana and his backing group the Mindbenders were one of the faves in the sixties. They had a smash hit with Game of Love which shot to No 1 in thew US yet only managed No 38 in Australia.

Wayne kept on playing with Golden Oldies type bands in UK pubs and clubs. He died early August at 74 years of age , a life of ups and downs including bankruptcy, booze, and a stint in the jug.

Inspired by true events, and based upon the novel "The Good Shepherd" by C. S. Forester (The African Queen), this is a crackling WWI adventure that hits the water like a torpedo and doesn't let go, and if battling the Nazi wolf-packs isn't enough, they have claustrophobic conditions, bitterly cold weather, violent seas, the relentless darkness of night, fatigue and inadequate equipment to deal with.

Written by and starring Tom Hanks, he gives a compelling performance as the beleaguered captain on his first commission, capturing all the emotional nuances with vivid realism, and is aided by a stellar supporting cast with equal effect every step of the way, however, the unseen stars here are the special effects team that have created an extraordinarily flawless canvas throughout which you feel you are actually there and all you see is vividly reel.

Tight, lean, thrilling, gripping and respectful, this another fine effort from the Hanks cannon responsible for the multi-award-winning "Band of Brothers," "The Pacific" as well as star of Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," a well made WWII thrill ride that deserves to join the ranks alongside some of the classic sea adventures of cinema such as "The Battle of the River Plate," "The Cruel Sea," "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "Das Boot," to name a few.

This reimagining of the classic "Perry Mason" TV series (1957-1966) starring Raymond Burr, Barbara Hale as (Della Street), William Hopper, Ray Collins and W illiam Tallman, is about as far removed from the original series as it gets, and without giving away any plotspoilers, is an extremely worthy workout that is sure to find whole new audiences for this legendary but here not always legal-eagle created by prolific pulp fiction writer Erle Stanley Gardner.

The setting of Los Angeles, as it was about to give birth to the literary and cinematic noir-style is a foreboding stroke, eerily underlying a time and setting that would soon herald in such Pulp Novel masterpieces of Dashell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, among others, and the resulting Film-Noir classics as "The Narrow Margin" (1952), "The Blue Dahlia" (1946), D.O.A. (1950), "Kiss Me Deadly (1955), "The Big Sleep" (1946), "He Walked By Night" (1948), "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950), "This Gun For Hire" (1942) and Billy Wilder's "Double Indemnity" (1944), to name just a few.

This seedy L.A. noir formula would continue to this day with such neo-noir classics as Roman Polanski's "Chinatown" (1974), Robert Altman's "The Long Goodbye" (1973), Arthur Penn's "Night Moves" (1975), Curtis Hanson's "L.A. Confidential" (1997), the Coen Bros.

"Barton Fink" (1991), among others, and this series is a worthy addition and testament to the long standing formula, albeit here on the small screen.

Executive Produced by Susan and Robert Downey, Jr, as well as encompassing some of the talent behind the award winning HBO hits "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Pacific," Season One grips with one case, and the excellent cast all shine with solid performances throughout, most notably John Lithgow, however, the standout here belongs to the striking period detail, set, production, costume design and CGI, all resulting in a deliberately measured but enthralling multi-layered time capsule of murder, dark secrets, racism, morally ambiguous characters, political and police corruption, doomed heroes and plenty more, that all combine to make this an exceptional experience!

Black Is King

■ (M). 115 minutes. Now showing in selected states.

Described by some as the next The Intouchables, this enjoyable comedy/drama may certainly prove to be a substantial hit like its 2011 forebear, but due to an approach that is a little too superficial, it falls slightly short of being something truly memorable.

Daniel Auteuil is well-cast as Victor Drumond, a once-great cartoonist who now feels out-of-step with the modern, tech-obsessed world.

His wife, Marianne (Fanny Ardant), despises Victor's unchanged viewpoint, and the two have felt a huge distance between them for quite some time.

When son Maxime (Michael Cohen) introduces Victor to a unique (if expensive) service offered by Antoine (Guillaume Canet), where rich clients can visit a particular time and place via intricate, complex sets populated by appropriately dressed actors, he decides to revisit a part of his own history.

Victor chooses the year 1974, and a little Lyon cafe, where he first met his future wife.

When the show begins, complications ensue. La Belle Epoque feels like a wistful, romantic variation on David Fincher's dark thriller The Game, with Hirokazu Koreeda's magnificent After Life mixed in (the longing to return to and inhabit that perfect memory), and cocomposer/writer/director Nicolas Bedos (Mr. and Mrs. Adelman) uses the central gimmick to smileinducing effect.

Bedos touches on society's current obsession with nostalgia, as well as our over-reliance on technology, but wants to keep the human factor front-and-centre, and thankfully he has a quartet of talented actors who are up to the challenge, though Ardant doesn't get to truly shine until the climactic scene.

Everything is given a gorgeous, golden glow by cinematographer Nicolas Bolduc (Enemy, War Witch).

La Belle Epoque definitely offers the kind of lighthearted entertainment that people need right now, and should have audiences feeling good as the end credits begin to roll.

I just wish Bedos dug deeper into the main characters, giving what is a delightful viewing experience just a bit more substance.

By the way, this has American remake written all over it.

■ (PG). 86 minutes. Now streaming on Disney+ We've come a long way since Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band, one of the first attempts to turn a hugely successful album into a movie (Alan Parker's bleak 1982 effort Pink Floyd : The Wall is another notable example).

An obvious passion project for singing superstar Beyonce (who seems influenced by both Julie Taymor and Tarsem Singh), this visual interpretation of her album The Lion King: The Gift, which was inspired by the execrable 2019 CGI animated remake of the 1994 classic, is lavishly mounted, but intrusive Disney marketing unfortunately undercuts its strong, important message.

Using vibrant imagery and an eclectic mixture of music both old and new, the film embraces and celebrates black culture, from the very beginning, to where they are now, presenting a proud history, even when that long journey has encountered many obstacles.

Utilising a large editing crew to rival a Terrence Malick production, a slew of cinematographers that makes one think of cinematic essays such as Roy Fricke's Baraka (1992) and Samsara (2011), and one amazingly talented costume designer in Zerina Akers, Beyonce, along with 10 other co-directors, brings noticeable vitality and pride to the screen with complete conviction, and effectively uses each song to take the viewer down an immersive path (artists include Yemi Alade, Tekno, Childish Gambino, and of course Beyonce herself).

Being a K-Pop fan, these collection of visual set-pieces don't top any elaborate music video created for groups like (G)I-DLE, Twice and Loona.

Despite all these sizeable efforts, the overall impact is hampered by the constant insertion of dialogue and story beats from The Lion King remake, which feels like a rather unsubtle plug for other Disney product.

This unnecessary cross-promotion feels utterly unnecessary, especially when the material here can offer rich rewards on its own.

An expansion of themes laid down in her 2016 visual album/ HBO Special Lemonade, Beyonce has definitely crafted a bright, uplifting mix of sight and sound, but it's just a pity the typical Disney marketing machine gets in the way once too often.

Harness racing at Maryborough ■ Harness racing returned to Maryborough "home of the squaregaiter" on Monday August 10 with trotters occupying half of the eight event card. Cudgee trainer/driver John Meade was successful with filly Sierra Kea, a daughter of European (Denmark) sire Peak and Diamond Insitu in the Robert Melham Electrical Contracting Services 3Y0 Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres.

Bred and raced by John and wife Mary, Sierra Kea stepped cleanly from barrier two, enjoying a lovely trail on the back of Whos Countn which led from barrier four. Using the sprint lane, Sierra Kea dashed clear in the shadows of the post to register a soft 4.6 metre victory over the pacemaker in a mile rate of 2-06.2, with Megeve third 1.2 metres back after following the pair.

Sierra Kea is a half sister to Sparkling Success the winner of the 2018 Great Southern Star.

■ Ross Creek trainer Steven Loftus' promising Angus Hall-Yankee Stella colt My Mate Yankee brought up two wins in succession by taking the Central Victoria Fencing 2Y0 Trotters Mobile over 2190 metres.

With regular reinswoman Kate Gath in the sulky, My Mate Yankee settled five back along the markers after starting from the extreme draw, before being set alight to park outside the leader Keayang Xena at the bell. It a great battle to the wire, My Mate Yankee prevailed by head returning a mile rate of 2-06.3. Illawong Moonbeam (one/one) last lap was third 14.2 metres back.

■ Lara based breeder/part-owner/trainer James Warnock was successful with 4Y0 Western Terror/Kano Star gelding Caledonian Terra in the 2190 metre Zagame's Ballarat Pace. Driven

by Greg Sugars, Caledonian Terra led throughout from the pole to defy all challengers, defeating Joy Mac (one/three) which joined him on the final bend by 2.9 metres, with Im Joe Louis (one/two) a space (27.7 metres) away in third place. The mile rate 2-01.3.

■ Mt Rowan trainer Greg Murnane combined with Josh Duggan to land the Carisbrook Motors Pace over 2190 metres aboard smart 4Y0 Well Said-Maybebaby gelding Itsallaboutjack in a mile rate of 2-01.1. settling three back in the moving line from gate three on the second row, Itsallaboutjack set off three wide solo in the last lap to sustain a long run in registering a tough head margin from Zazu which followed him home. Abstractor was a game third 1.1 metres back after racing exposed.

■ Mildura also raced on Monday and what a night it was for Ouyen reinsman Simon Jardine who chalked up four winners on the program.

Four year old Julius Caesar-Miss Rainmaker mare Caesars Reign started the ball rolling when victorious in the TAB Long May We Play Maiden Pace over 2190 metres.

Trained at Rainbow in the Mallee by Stuart Cocks, Caesars Reign settled four back in the moving line from gate three on the second line as Parisian Pride led from the pole. Going forward three wide racing for the bell, Caesars Pride raced away prior to the home turn to win in a breeze, 12 metres clear of No Emotion which trailed the pacemaker returning a mile rate of 205. Caballo Diablo was third a half neck away.

Stuart has been having a great run during the Regional racing period.

■ Next to arrive was local trainer Sandra O'Connor's 7Y0 Rocknroll Hanover-Sweet Secrets mare She Can Rock in the 1790 metre Happy Birthday Gavin Peters Pace, leading all of the way from gate three to account for Woody Nightshade which trailed by 3.9 metres, with Amused 6 metres away in third place. The mile rate 2-02.4.

■ Taking the drive on Lachlan Prothero's 4Y0 Somebeachsomewhere--Lombo Sleek Streak mare Santa Casa Dream in the Tenderprint Australia Pace over 1790 metres, Simon's third victory for the night arrived as Santa Casa Dream outstayed her rivals after racing parked from the bell to score by 1.7 metres in a 2-00.9 rate from Fragmental off the back of the pacemaker Pirates Of Zanzibar who was third 3.7 metres back.

■ Win number four came up in the form of Mildura owner/trainer Rick Holmes' 9Y0 Modern Art-Next Cord gelding Emerging Art which snared the Sunraysia Daily Pace over 1790 metres.

Driven by Kathy Watson who wasted no time in sending him forward to race outside the leader Cashwrangs Smoker (gate four) and control the race, Murranji Track raced to the front on turning and held a margin to the wire, greeting the judge 3.5 metres in advance of Heza Reddy (one/one at bell) and Luke Watson's Caulonia Terror which obtained an inside run from three back the markers to be 1.8 metres away. Trained at Sunnycliffs by Colin Rogers, Murranji Track recorded his 29th victory in 124 outings.

■ Shepparton was the venue for Tuesday racing and Mildura pair Mary and Ian Campbell's syndicated 5Y0 Majestic Son-Maori Road mare Aldebaran Crescent brought up two wins in succession and seven overall when greeting the judge in the Lucy's Dorpers Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres.

Trained at Avenel by David Aiken and driven by son Josh, Aldebaran Crescent stepped safely from ten metres to settle four back along the markers as polemarker Spiders Devil led.

Moving to lead up the outside division for the final circuit before gaining one/one cover when Regal Assassin came off the back of the leader, Aldebaran Crescent looked to be cruising approaching the final bend and when eased wide, pounced on the lead in the straight to register an easy 6.7 metre victory in advance of Bootleg Bert (three back the markers - behind leader home turn) recording a mile rate of 2-04.5. Forty metre backmarker Daquiri came from the tail to be third 4.9 metres back.

Myboymyboy was sent forward from outside the front line to cross the leader Midnight Queen in the back straight on the first occasion and was never headed, scoring by 14.9 metres from Jet Black Orion (one/one), with Midnight Queen holding down third 6.1 metres back, while Better Day was taken back at the start from gate six, before going forward to race exposed for the last lap to account for Andres from last by 1.5 metres, Rocks Can Roll (one/two) was third a half neck away.

■ Wednesday was double day with Stawell racing in the afternoon and Bendigo at night.

Beeac trainer Courtney Slater was successful at Stawell with 4Y0 Lawman-Bold Mover gelding Dicko Dixon in the 2180 metre Gateway Security Trotters Mobile. Raced by brother Jordon, harness Hall Of Famer and Rothacker Medallist Dick Lee in partnership with wife Jean and UK resident Bill Dixon a lifetime friend of the Lees.

Driven by Burrumbeet reinsman Michael Stanley, Dicko Dixon went forward from outside the front line to park outside the leader Aldebaran Rocky (gate four) before assuming control mid-race.

Travelling sweetly, Dicko Dixon defied all challengers to register a 3.4 metre victory from My Darling Beware (one/two) which made the home turn very wide, with Aldebaran Rocky third a half head away after using the sprint lane. The mile rate 2-07.

■ It was no surprise to see Kerryn Manning enjoying success at Stawell, finishing the day with three winners - two for herself and one for father Peter. Kerryn's two were 4Y0 Mach Three-Western Spirit gelding Valiente in the Sign Online Pace over 2180 metres and Old Farm Way a 4Y0 Western Terror-Petite Alto mare in the 2180 metre TAB Long May We Play Pace.

Valiente after a mid-field passage from gate two on the second line was probably lucky to win as Lost For Words held a tidy margin approaching the home turn before going off stride and galloping wildly throwing away all chance allowing Valiente to gain the day by 11.3 metres over Sport Dreamer (three back the markers) and Local Icon (four back) which was 9.4 metres away in a mile rate of 2-00.3.

Old Farm Way was restrained at the start from outside the front line to sit at the rear with Calvert Hot Shot leading from gate three.

Switching to be three back the markers on turning, Old Farm Way using the sprint lane prevailed by a nose from Calvert Hot Shot in a finish which tricked many.

Upton Girl which moved off the back of the leader on the home turn was third 3.4 metres back. The mile rate 2-01.8. ■ Heywood's Bec East combined with Michael Bellman to snare a double on the program with Shadow Play-Dee Dee Cullen filly Eastbro Adele (gate three) leading all of the way in the Hillcroft Stables Pace over 1785 metres, accounting for Keayang Shady (three wide solo last lap from last) by 7.4 metres in 1-58.7.

Beginning brilliantly from gate six to lead, Crossland rated the horse a treat, kicking clear on turning to score by 6.9 metres from Patched from midfield with a three wide trail into the final bend, with Jazspur third 15.7 metres back after racing uncovered. ■ Terang duo - Marg & Jason Lee scored a most impressive victory with Keayang Livana, a 4Y0 Imperial Count-Poignant mare who blitzed her rivals in the Active Electrical Trotters Handicap over 2200 metres in a mile rate of 2-03.6..

Stepping cleanly out wide on the track as she is out of the draw, Keayang Livana crossed polemarker Hanging On A Dream running into the back straight on the first occasion and with Jason allowing her to bowl along at her leisure, opened right up in the final circuit to record an unextended 18.9 metre margin in advance of 30 metre equal backmarker Gus And Maori which rattled home late from the rear.

Our Cups runneth over ■ The Victoria Racing Club have come up with a ripper idea of a virtual Melbourne Cup to celebrate this year's 160th running of the famous two miler.

The greatest virtual race will see 24 of the 159 Cup winners together, replicating the movement, gait, and strength of the historical runners to crown the ultimate winner.

An expert panel will be picked who will whittle down the field to a final 24, the regular numbers always in the Cup. The ideal people to pick the runners are the racecallers, now and yesteryear; trainers, who have either won a Cup or raced in it; and the winning jockeys There have been many an argument over a great number of years, who was the best, now the panel has the chance to strut their stuff as to who, will make the final 24.

You can go right back to 1890, when the mighty Carbine beat 38 other horses, with a cracked hoof, carrying 10 stone, five pounds.

Known as Old Jack, he wouldn't go onto the track unless his trainer, put up his umbrella.

Moving on to the immortal Phar Lap, who not only won the 1930 Cup, he won four big races over the four days of the Carnival.

That was at the time when the Depression was on in Australia, and he was the favourite with everyone, whether you were a horse lover or not.

The great Rising Fast should have won two Melbourne Cups.

After winning the first in 1954, he went around hot favourite in 1955, when Toporoa beat him, after he caused severe interference.

Rising Fast's jockey, Bill, Williamson, decided not to protest, feeling it wasn't right to protest in a Melbourne Cup. Then you have got Makybe Diva, the great mare, who is the only horse to have won three Melbourne Cups.

The VRC is hoping to run the race in the week leading up to the 2020 Melbourne Cup, with Matt Hill to call the virtual race.

■ Though the Blue Diamond won't be run until next February, 1614 nominations have been lodged for the classic.

Local top trainers, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, who have six runners in this year's Blue Diamond, will aim again to once again tackle to Group One event submitting 108 nominations.

The Lindsay Park team, with David Hayes this year in Hong Kong, Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes, David's son, will be well represented with 80 nominations.

The powerful Team Hawkes will be kept busy with 77 nominations.

The Hawkes have more than sheer numbers in their favour, like Maher, Eustace, and HayesDabernig.

They are looking forward to another win in the classic, they are impressed with a Zoustar colt, Dio, among their entries.

■ The well-known racing family of the Freedmans has been to the forefront of the Sport of Kings for man and now we have another addition.

William Freedman, the son of Richard Freedman, is the latest to join the training ranks.

Richard was in the dynasty, when Lee Freedman was the oldest of the clan training out of Flemington.

I the pleasure of meeting Lee back in the late seventies, when I was working with Channel 9, at track work where he produced many a top horse. One in particular, was Super Impose who won a Cox Plate and two Epsoms, and placed in a Melbourne Cup. He was so easy to get on with and was always a great help during my stay at Nine. He was later joined by Anthony, Richard, and the younger brother Mitch, who all pitched in.

Lee and the team were instrumental in winning Melbourne Cups with Tawriffic in 1989, Subzero in 1992, and Doriemus in 1995.

The biggest triumph for the stable, came when Lee was given Makybe Diva to train, after David Hall who prepared her to win her first Cup in 2003, went overseas.

It's history now, with the great mare going to become the only horse to win three Melbourne Cups and in succession.

I remember vividly on that day in 2005, when Lee with his acceptance speech, said that on that day the only person who could possibly see another horse win three Melbourne Cups, would have to be around three years of age, if it ever happens again.
