● Epping Gardens Aged Care facility has been charged by authorities.
Heritage Care has been charged by WorkSafe Victoria with three occupational health and safety offences, including failure to ensure a safe workplace, and faces a maximum total fine of $4.47 million. According to media reports, WorkSafe Victoria has accused them of failing to train staff on several personal protective equipment guidelines - including when it should be changed and how to safely dispose of it. Herald Sun journalist Sarah Booth reported that the failures are alleged to have occurred between March 13 2020, when Australian guidelines on PPE use in care facilities were released, and July 20 2020, when the outbreak began. A WorkSafe Victoria statement said the “complex investigation took 22 months to complete and involved reviewing thousands of pages of documents and multiple witness interviews”. Heritage Care were yet to comment when The Local Paper went to press.
COUNCIL DOUBLES DOWN
■ JUST two days after ‘The Local Paper’ published flaws in the ban against resident Brian Sanaghan, Darebin Council Acting CEO Rachel Ollivier moved to reinforce the prohibition.
In a notice marked ‘Private and Confidential’ dated last Friday (July 8), Ms Ollivier repeated the exclusion on the former Northcote Councillor from attending any meeting of the City of Darebin. In its July 6 edition, the Local Paper had pointed out that the Council’s previous Chief Executive Officer, Sue Wilkinson, had written the ban in the first person. Using the word “I” repeatedly in her correspondence, Ms Wilkinson set herself up as the only person that could apply and enforce the ban. Ms Wilkinson has since left Darebin, and taken the CEO role at the nearby City of Yarra. In last Friday’s correspondence from Ms Ollivier to Mr Sanaghan, she discreetly changed the references to “the Chief Executive Officer”. The confidential letter said: “The arrangements put in place on 29 March 2021 were in response to your conduct at the Council meeting held on 22 March 2021 held at Merrilands Community Centre. At this meeting there were a large number of children and young people in attendance and your behaviour had a detrimen-
REVEALED: Darebin CEO’s secret letter to Brian Sanaghan tal impact on a number of attendees at the meeting including community members and Council staff. “At this meeting you: ■ Addressed the Mayor in a rude and disrespectful manner ■ Interjected numerous times during the Public Question Time ■ Displayed aggression towards the Mayor and Council Officers ■ Failed to comply with repeated requests from the Mayor to modify your behaviour ■ Disrupted the meeting, making it necessary to adjourn the meeting and call the Police for assistance,” Ms Ollivier alleged. Mr Sanaghan says that a video recording of the meeting shows that he was standing for 53 seconds, during which time he was repeatedly interrupted by Mayor, Cr Lina Messina.
