LOCAL SHOWDOWN
■ LABOR sitting member Ged Kearney is favourite to be re-elected to the seat of Cooper at the May 21 election.
The safe ALP seat includes the suburbs of Alphington, Croxton, Fairfield, Keon Park, Kingsbury, Northcote, Preston, Regent, Reservoir, Ruthven, Thornbury and Westgarth. Ms Kearney has been placed last on the ballot paper: 1. Rabin BANGAAR Animal Justice Party 2. Kath LARKIN Victorian Socialists 3. Celeste LIDDLE The Australian Greens - Victoria 4.Adrian WHITEHEAD FUSION: Science, Pirate, Secular, Climate Emergency 5. JadonATKINSON Liberal Party of Australia (Victorian Division) 6.Adam LAROSA United Australia Party 7. William Tristan TURNER Pauline Hanson's One Nation 8. Ged KEARNEY Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch) The ABC analystg Antony Green says Cooper covers 59 square kilometres and lies between Merri and Darebin Creeks, running from the Yarra in the south to Mahoneys Rd in the north. A minor change losing Clifton Hill to Melbourne, lifts the Labor margin versus the Greens from 14.6 per cent to 14.8 per cent. “Cooper was the new name adopted at the 2019 election for the seat previously known as Batman. “The new name honours William Cooper, 1861-1941, a Yorta Yorta man and spokesman for Aboriginal people who advocated for direct representation in Parliament, enfranchisement, land rights and federal control of Aboriginal affairs. “The electorate's former name of Batman honoured John Batman, the man traditionally credited as the founder of Melbourne. “The 2018 redistribution abandoned the name after numerous submissions pointing to Batman's connection with the massacre of Aborigines in Tasmania before he settled Melbourne. “Batman was first contested in 1906 and has only left the Labor fold twice in the last century. It was lost to the United Australia Party for a single term on the defeat of the Scullin Government in 1931, and was won by Independent Captain Sam Benson in 1966. “Benson had first been elected as Labor MP for the seat at a 1962 by-election and was reelected as an Independent in 1966 after losing Labor endorsement for supporting Australia's involvement the Vietnam war. Benson retired at the 1969 election.” ★ Labor man Andrew Giles looks set to retain the Scullin seat in a seven-way contest. The ballot paper order is: 1. Patchouli PATERSON The Australian Greens - Victoria 2. Ursula van BREE Pauline Hanson's One Nation 3. Eric KOELMEYER Liberal Democratic Party 4. Andrew GILES Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch) 5. Yassin ALBARRI United Australia Party
SAFE SEATS
“Virosh Perera is facing scrutiny over a nowremoved real estate website that he concedes may have breached the law,” reported Nine News. The ABC says: “This electorate was first contested at the 1955 election and is named after former Labor Leader and Prime Minister James Scullin. “Scullin served as Prime Minister from 1929 until 1932 and had the unenviable task of trying to hold together a fractured Labor Party and nation at the height of the Great Depression. “His government was forced to an early election by defections and defeated at the 1931 election. “This seat has had only four members in the six decades since it was first contested, all representing the Labor Party.
