WHITTLESEA CITY COUNCIL CEO’S PAY PACKET SWELLS Fat pay packet for local Council boss

■ CRAIG LLOYD, Whittlesea City CEO, received a considerable pay rise on top of the $250,000 he received in his previous job as boss at Murrindindi Shire.

The highest paid senior officer in the 2020-21 financial year was in the $320,000-$329,999 band. This equals $6153.85 every week.

In Council documents, it is revealed that one employee at the City of Whittlesea was paid in the $900,000-$919,999 band in the 2020 financial year.

Of the 43 senior officers, one was paid in the $250,000-$259,999 range, one in the $240,000$249,999 range, two in the $230,000-$239,999 range, and two in the $220,000-$229,999 range.

There was one in each of the $210,000$219,999 and $200,000-$209,.999. Three were in the $190,000-$199,999 range, and three in each of the $180,000- $189,999 and $170,000$179,999 range.

Ten were paid in the $160,000-$169,000 bracket, with five paid between $151,000$159,999 range. Ten received up to and including $151,000.

The number of key personnel in 2020-21 jumped from 34 to 43. The total remuneration for the senior officers rose from $5.36 million to $7.46 million.

Key management personnel included Joe Carbone - Acting Chief Executive Officer (July 1, 2020 - October 11, 2020).

Heid. gunshot injury

■ Armed Crime Squad detectives are investigating an alleged firearms incident which occurred in Heidelberg Heights on Monday morning (Nov. 8).

Emergency services were called to an address in Bamfield Rd about 1.30am after reports a man had suffered a gunshot injury.

On arrival police located a man, believed to be in his 20s, with injuries to his upper torso.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Officers have arrested a man at the scene and he is currently assisting police with their enquires.

■ Boroondara Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a criminal damage by fire of a stolen car in Hawthorn East.

It is believed unknown offenders set fire to a stolen BMW, parked in a carpark on Auburn Rd. A man was seen at a nearby

● Tim Smith, Kew MLA ■ Troubled Kew MLA Tim Smith has put his local voters last, and his Liberal Party second last in his priorities, by refusing to quit from his State Parliament seat after his thirst-based car accident this month.

State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy’s logic failed too. Guy said his mate Smith should not stand for re-election for the Kew seat.

If Smith is not suitable to sit in the next Parliament, how is that he remains suitable to be in the current Parliament?

Since his own journey to become head Liberal-National, replacing Michael O’Brien, Matthew Guy had this first opportunity to show that he was a strong leader, and prepared to lose a seat on a matter of principle.

Tim Smith failed the people of Kew. Matthew Guy failed the people of Victoria.

Monitor on the job

■ A municipal monitor has been appointed to the South Gippsland Shire Council to help guide good governance and help forge its strong future.

Shaune Leane, Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane, announced on Friday (Nov. 5) the appointment of Prue Digby, who bring experience in state and local government and prior experience as a municipal monitor to Frankston City Council.

During her 12-month term as municipal monitor, Ms Digby will support the Shire's transition back to elected councillors, encourage good governance and help prevent a recurrence of the behaviours that led to the council’s dismissal in June 2019.

The Council was dismissed after the Commission of Inquiry found a high level of discord, conflict and tension between the councillors had negatively affected the council's performance, councillors’ decision-making, councillor-staff relationships and council's reputation. Three administrators have since been overseeing the functioning of the Council.

● Cr Rick Garotti Public opinion is largely that Banyule Mayor Cr Rick Garotti needs to stand down permanently as a Councillor after his bombshell evidence at the Independent Broad-based Abti-Corruption Commission. He admitted to playing a central role in branch stacking within the Labor Partyin Victoria. Mr Garotti was questioned over two days in public anti-corruption commission hearings as part of an investigation into the misuse of taxpayer funds and staff for factional activities.

Cr Garotti has informed Banyule Council that he has taken a leave of absence from his role as councillor for personal reasons. He stepped down as Mayor. The Council issued a media statement: “Banyule CEO, Allison Beckwith said, “a number of concerning reports have emerged from the IBAC hearings, which was addressed by Cr Garotti in recent days. I can appreciate this is a challenging time for Cr Garotti and I respect his decision to step down.”

Deputy Mayor, Cr Tom Melican, acknowledged that while the hearings relate to Cr Garotti’s role as a member of the Labor Party, the matters dealt with have raised concerns in the local community. Cr Melican said, “We have received a number of enquiries from residents.

While Cr Garotti has decided to vacate his post for the time being, this will allow the remaining eight councillors to keep focused on the important work we do in supporting the community.” Cr Melican has assumed the Mayoral role.

An eight-week food and garden waste service trial is underway with 500 households across Banyule municipality. More than half of the waste that goes to landfill in Banyule can be composted. That means that food scraps, garden waste and organic matter that could be turned into sustainable compost for gardens and farms are currently going to waste.

Banyule hopes to reduce landfill waste by up to 12,000 tonnes annually.

Kinglake power angst

■ Kinglake and other parts of the Murrindindi Shire were again thrown into darkness after wild winds and storms hit the region hard.

Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish says the Andrews Labor Government failed thousands of Victorians who remained without power, hot water and other basic essentials for days.

“Almost a week after damaging winds across Victoria approximately 6000 Victorian households were still in the dark and fending for themselves,” Ms McLeish said.

“The Andrews Government must ensure all families in the dark are reconnected urgently.”

Locally, hundreds of Murrindindi and Yarra Ranges Shire households and businesses were in and out of blackouts for a number of days.

The Kinglake region was hit particularly hard, with power out for close to a week. The damage was visible by the fallen debris and cut up branches lining the roads throughout Kinglake, which the SES Unit worked tirelessly to clear from the roads.

“Our local SES services, emergency services and AusNet were working hard to get people’s power back on and clear fallen trees off roads. They were inundated with calls and worked hard to help everyone they could,” Ms McLeish said.

● Ashley Geelan Geelan created many hundreds of online and social media posts attacking his targets.

Police were told that Geelan made written threats against the personal safety and well-being of a number of people including then-Cr Dunscombe, Mr Beacham, Mr Allen and Mr Long.

Geelan wrote to one victim that he had met with ‘enforc-

ers’: “I met some of these men at around 3am this morning. I gave them, your, Leigh Dunscombe’s, Ash Long’s and Blake Allen’s home address.

“What they – whomever they are – do with it ain’t up to me … I advise you as a friend to walk from the lot real f—ing fast. That is if you’d like to have a home to return to!”

The Court was told that Geelan repeatedly breached Personal Safety Intervention Orders taken out against him.

Magistrate Jennifer Tregent, sitting at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court, imposed a 12 month term of imprisonment with a non-parole period of six months.

Geelan was told that he will find it extremely difficult to be granted parole given the circumstances of his offending and the current attitude of the Adult Parole Board.

122-kmh at S. Morang

■ Officers from Greensborough Highway Patrol were left shaking their heads after they detected a number of speeders on the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

A 19-year-old Doreen man was detected driving his vehicle at an alleged 122kmh in a 60kmh section of Plenty Rd in South Morang.

His VW Golf was impounded with towing costs of $896.10 and the probationary driver is expected to be charged on summons for numerous traffic offences.

Just before this intercept officers had been dealing with a 42-year-old Glenroy woman.

It is alleged she was driving her Holden Commodore at 83kmh in a 40kmh roadworks zone on Plenty Rd, South Morang.

She received a fine for $772 for speeding and has had her licence suspended for 6 months.

Minutes before that intercept officers had been dealing with an 18-year-old woman from Mickleham.

It is alleged her Mazda CX9 was detected at 95kmh in a 60kmh zone, again on Plenty Rd in South Morang.

She received a $591 fine and will lose her licence for three months.

■ Mernda Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have arrested a man after he allegedly performed an explicit sexual act towards two women in Montmorency last month.

It is alleged a man was following a woman on Glengarriff Crescent performing the sexually explicit act, on Monday, October 4.

Investigators arrested the 21-year-old Montmorency man.

He was released and is expected to be charged on summons with sexual activity directed at another, to appear at a Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Reservoir man jailed

■ Ashley Geelan, 43-year-old university student, of Winter Cres., Reservoir, formerly of Kinglake, has been jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to charges associated with stalking, breach of Court orders, and breaches of bail.

Over a four-year period, Geelan created havoc with an ongoing online campaign against identities particularly those in the Kinglake area and wider Murrindindi region.

People harassed included former Murrindindi Shire Mayor Leigh Dunscombe, police hero Cameron Caine, businessman Mark Beacham, locals Blake Allen and Lee Lawrence, and Local Paper Editor Ash Long.

Geelan’s targets included a former Kinglake publican, local business people, even a Kinglake volunteer historian aged in her eighties.

Splash turned on

■ The water play splash pad at theAll Abilities Play Space at Mill Park was turned on from last Friday(Nov. 5).

The water play area includes accessible water play tables, shooting water jets, misting rings and manual water pumps, providing hours of fun for all ages.

■ Whittlesea Council says that it wishes to thank the community for providing information following the dog attacks on Darebin Creek Trail in Epping.

“Thanks to the efforts of our community, two dogs have been surrendered and their owners are cooperating with Council,” a City representative said.

“This matter is still under investigation so we are not able to provide any further information at this stage.

“Council officers will continue to patrol the Darebin Creek Trail area to ensure ongoing safety,” a City statement said.

The Local Paper is published in local editions that serve 37 local government areas in and around Melbourne.

Newest members welcomed

● Reg Gorman ■ Actor Reg Gorman passed away at the age of 89. His agent Joanna Milosz said on social media: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Reg Gorman, absolute legend of the Australian preforming arts. A true gentleman, a kind, gentle, generous man. He will be greatly missed.”

Reg Gorman is best remembered for his ongoing role as ‘Jack the Barman’ in The Sullivans and his roles in Neighbours which gained him international recognition.

Reg Gorman was born in 1932 and began stage work in vaudeville and revues in the 1950s. He made his television debut as an extra in an opera at the ABC studios in 1956.

Reg recalled one camera in the centre of the studio and four sets built in a circle around the huge solitary swivelling camera.

Reg clutching a spear had to run from set to set – such was “live” black-and-white television in the early days.

Reg appeared in hundreds of television programs over the years. My first memory of seeing him on television was as a wood chopper in an episode of Skippy.

Little did I know that in later life we would become friends and appearing together in a touring comedy show.

His television credits included, Homicide, The Henderson Kids, Blue Heelers and Fergus McPhail. Reg was in films such as Ned Kelly, Dalkeith, The Cup and many more.

His musical comedy stage credits included Sweet Charity, Promises Promises and The Bells are Ringing.

He met Judith Roberts when they were both cast in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and they married in 1963.

Reg toured his one man show Hanging Onto Vaudeville for several years and he was the comedy support act on The Diana Trask Show.

I played straight man to his comedy routines in the touring show The Great Comedy Teams.

Reg Gorman always wanted to make people laugh and did that successfully in his long career.

In 2011 Reg Gorman won best actor at the St Kilda Film Festival for his role of ‘Joe’ in the short film Punch Drunk.

Reg and Judith had three children Kate, Charmaine and Karl. Reg was very proud of his grandchildren.

Sympathy is extended to the family and Reg will be missed by his friends.

The family include this message in the newspaper tributes: “Da, we will miss you so very much. A life full of laughter, carried on through family.”

$4.4m for 3KND’s home

■ Darebin Council has warmly welcomed the State Government’s announcement that 3KND Radio (Kool N Deadly) will receive $4.4 million for a dedicated media centre on Roseberry Ave in Preston.

Melbourne’s only indigenous radio station, 3KND provides the Victorian Aboriginal community with around-the-clock broadcasting in a positive and culturally appropriate way, as well as specialist training in media and broadcasting.

Darebin Mayor Cr Lina Messina said the funding would allow 3KND to continue its valuable work in the heart of Darebin. The announcement was made mid-year.

Gerry Terati Lyons, General Manager of 3KND, said the funding will allow 3KND to continue its role at the forefront of indigenous storytelling and education.

“We are humbled that the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams and the Victorian Government realised the importance of what 3KND does for the community. This funding allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples a media station that stands alone to provide a truth telling voice for all in the Kulin Nation. This funding gives us a strong future in storying telling, training and cultural education.”

■ Darebin Councillors, at their latest meeting, honoured the memory of Vincenzo ‘Vince’ Pirrottina.

The Council and Darebin DisabilityAdvisory Committee were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of long-standing Advisory Committee member on September 23.

“Vince was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in 1950s,” said Mayor Cr Lina Messina.

“He never let this diagnosis or anything else stop him pursuing his diverse interests.

“He was a scorer for his school’s sports teams, an artist and a chess master.

“But first and foremost, Vince was passionate about making the world a better place for people with disability.

“Vince was an accomplished and highly respected advocate and he used his lived experience to inform this work.

● Vincenzo (Vince) Pirrottina “He addressed graduates who were just beginning their professional journeys and policy makers at different Victorian Government departments and contributed to a range of publications and teaching videos.

“Through this engagement he supported the development of different caring roles across organisations.

“Long-time Preston resident, Vince first joined the Darebin Disability Advisory Committee in 1994, as one of the original members of the Preston Disability Advisory Committee and continued on the Committee after the Council amalgamation.

“During this time, he participated in many projects focusing on the improvement of access and inclusion in Darebin for community members with lived experience of disability.

“His work was recognised and in 2005 when Vince was awarded joint Darebin Citizen of the Year.

“On behalf of Council I have also written to Rosanne, Vince’s wife, to express our deep condolences and sadness on his passing,” Cr Messina told her colleagues at the October 25 meeting.

Sex assault at Bundoora

■ Mernda Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are appealing for public assistance after a man sexually assaulted a woman in Bundoora last month.

Investigators have been told a woman was walking along a walking track between McLeans Rd and Greenhills Rd when a man engaged her in conversation around 4.10pm on Thursday, October 28.

The man then sexually assaulted the woman and rode off towards Greenhills Rd. Detectives have released a face-fit image of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged 27-30 years, about 170cm tall, with blue eyes, a slim build, mousey blonde hair and acne.

He was wearing a white T-shirt and shorts and was riding a multi-coloured bike with a white shopping bag tied to the handlebars.

■ A group of Whittlesea City residents has been recognised for going above and beyond to help their local community.

The inaugural City of Whittlesea Community Awards was presented in an online ceremony on Wednesday, October 27, which also featured a Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Ringo.

Administrator Peita Duncan, who was also a member of the Community Awards Committee, praised the efforts of those who were celebrated.

“It’s wonderful to see so many people in our community giving up their time to help others,” she said.

“This level of community spirit is inspiring. We were pleased to recognise a small group of these wonderful people in our first community awards program.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank theAwards Committee who volunteered their time to help direct the organisation of the awards and judge the nominations.

“We hope this encourages others to appreciate the community spirit that is present in the City of Whittlesea.”

Sport Briefs Rebels AGM

■ The Alexandra Football-Netball Club met onWednesday, October 27 for the Annual General Meeting.

After presentation of the Club’s 2021 Financial Report and President’s Report, all executive positions were declared vacant with the following appointments subsequently made: President – Ray Steyger, Senior VicePresident – Sam Kidd, Junior Vice-President – to be confirmed, Treasurer – Ray Steyger and Secretary – Kylie Cairns.

A big thank you to Peter McKenzie. He has stepped down from the executive due to work commitments, after having made a significant contribution to the Club.

A number of enthusiastic people have pledged to assist the Club on several Committees and if anyone is interested in joining the Club in any capacity, please don’t hesitate in contacting Ray Steyger on 5772 2627, everyone is welcome.

The Club was pleased to have a number of coaching applications which were discussed and the following appointments made for the 2022 season: Reserves coach Scott Ferrier and senior coach Nick Wal had already been re-appointed, Under 17 football and senior netball coaches are pending whilst junior netball coaches appointed were Under 13, Emma Kidd, and Under 15, Penny Van Lierop ,re-appointed.

Junior football coach appointments were for Under 9, Sam Kidd; Under 11, Cameron Gysberts; Under 13, Rebecca Clark re-appointed; Under 15, Daniel Crane and Brad Howell. ★ In late 2015, the Alexandra FootballNetball Club commenced an aluminium can recycling project.

Key aim of the project is to reduce the amount of material going into landfill as well as providing some income for the Club.

As at September, the project has collected more than 8500 kilograms of aluminium cans which have been recycled.

The project is ongoing, organised by Ray ‘Fox’ Chanter, Richard Jack, Michael Harper and Ray Steyger.

You will find wheelie bins with red lids marked “cans only” near the entry gate at theAlexandra Showgrounds and Recreation Reserve.

Winner with 36 points was John Phillips (20). Second with 35 was Alan Pell (14) with Steve Rumney (28) third with 34. John Tanner(22) was fourth on CB from Gary Pollard (12) with 33 each.

David Ngo was NTP on the 2nd and Brendan Chenhall won the Club Award.

Chooklotto winner was Tony Rule, and the Stubbie holder went to Phil Armstrong.

History grants

■ Grants of up to $600 are now available to fund history and/or heritage projects within the Nillumbik Shire.

News Briefs New NE Link plans

Banyule Council says it is looking forward to a full briefing.

Cr Tom Melican, Mayor, said:“We’ve not seen the detail yet, but the longer tunnel and a simplified Lower Plenty Rd interchange are really positive improvements to the design.”

“We’ve worked really hard with our community over many years to show that these improvements make complete sense, environmentally and for the overall design.

“It’s a win, that some of what we worked hard for is now locked in and we are getting clearer on what will actually be delivered “Upgrades to the Watsonia station are still a missing piece, especially with such a big new carpark,” Cr Melican said.

■ The City of Darebin annual report, accompanied by an auditor’s report, is due to be discussed at its meeting to be held on Monday, November 22.

A copy of the annual; report can be viewed at the Counci’s website.

A Planning Committee meeting was held on Monday this week (Nov. 8).

In addition to the November 22 meeting, a special meeting is planned to be held on Wednesday, November 24, at which the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected.

That meeting will be held at the Preston Town Hall, and according to an advertisement in newspaper, only limited public access will be available.

Draft Local Law

■ The Draft Nillumbik General Local Law is now open for community feedback, after being endorsed at last month’s Council meeting.

The Council received more than 700 public submissions earlier this year ahead of the review of the Amenity Local Law (2013), which covers a range of objectives including behaviour in public places; the number of animals that can be kept, and open air burning, and the Infrastructure Assets Local Law (2013), which canvases topics such as stormwater drains and Council asset protection.

Nillumbik Council considered a range of ideas and suggestions to prepare the Draft General Nillumbik Local Law. Mayor Cr Peter Perkins thanked those who submitted ideas and comments to inform the draft, and said he looks forward to the community’s feedback.

“I encourage everyone to have their say on the draft, because local law reviews only happen once every 10 years,” Cr Perkins said.

■ Darebin Council is planning to sell the 6.10m wide discontinued road at the rear of 7 Dumbarton St and 55 Dundee St Reservoir.

It is Council’s intention to sell the land from the former road to the owner of 7 Dumbarton St, Reservoir, by private treaty

● Phillip Compagna and Ailsa Page ■ Many of us have elderly relatives in aged care, and one of the hardest effects of the constant lockdowns during the pandemic was not being allowed to visit them, and knowing that so many of their activities couldn’t happen.

Husband and wife singing duo In The Mood, aka Ailsa Page and Phillip Campagna, were used to bringing high quality entertainment to nursing homes, until suddenly they were locked out too.

But this innovative duo were determined that our oldies needn’t miss out on that essential musical stimulation, so they recorded a DVD of favourite songs, complete with singalong lyrics on them.

Having both had parents and grandparents affected by dementia and living in aged care facilities, Ailsa and Phillip were used to using music to connect with and entertain their loved ones.

While not all elderly people can access performances by Zoom or YouTube, most facilities have a DVD player, so the duo video recorded from home 15 of their most loved songs, with the bonus feature of cameo performances from their geriatric dog, Maxi.

“We’ve seen first-hand the immediate benefits of a good singalong with our parents and also the audiences that we sing to,” Ailsa said.

“I’ll never forget one performance where most of the audience were wheeled in on princess beds, and I could still see them move their feet and fingers in time to the music.”

The DVD is called Singsational Singalong and includes their most requested numbers by audiences, such as Delilah, and Let’s Twist Again.

Local Theatre La Mama returns

■ At the same time as Victoria opens up after the pandemic lockdown, the rebuilt La Mama HQ in Carlton is also opening, 3½ years since the theatre was destroyed by fire.

Thanks to fundraising, designing to building and every detail in between, an enormous community of people have come together to make this happen.

What Rhymes With Orange?

■ Theatre throughout the centuries has often used adaptive and innovative processes to give a twist to the story.

As early as the 5th century BC, Greek writers of tragedy used this device to resolve complicated or seemingly hopeless situations.

Throughout the history of the theatre this has been used in extraordinary, imaginative, and creative ways to turn the story in an unexpected direction.

The digitally streamed performance of Isabella Perversi’s latest work clearly demonstrates the transformative nature of theatre.

The marriage of theatre to film works amazingly as such a device in Isabella Perversi’s production of What Rhymes with Orange?

The work is directed by Alanah Guiry, filmed by Mad Hatter Films and sensitively and brilliantly performed by Isabella Perversi (Rosie) and Fabio Motto (Tom).

The natural warmth and genuineness projected by Perversi and Motto resonates with the audience who, as the work progresses, become more and more drawn to the characters.

The story is a contemporary one that explores the nature of modern relationships, the intrusion yet comfort technology plays in our everyday lives.

The mobile phone is used as a symbol for a series of disconnected aspects in our daily lives, representing communication, miscommunication , the ability to shroud reality, hide loneliness, conceal secrets, provide a crutch and yet also be an alluring comforter.

Rosie and Tom are a couple in love who are at a crossroads in their relationships.

Like all humans their characters are flawed. Their lived realities do not match up with what each of them wants for their future. Rosie dreams of becoming a successful dancer. She is constantly auditioning and completely obsessed with following her dreams. In contrast, Tom is a reforming alcoholic who on the other hand wants them to start a family.

Relationships can be challenging and often choices must be made that may either compromise one party or the other or the challenges presented can bind a relationship making it stronger. Rosie and Tom’s relationship breaks down through a series of events including lies, an abortion, and the final realisation that neither of them want the same out of life. A modern tragedy!

Lillian’s new album

■ Australian jazz vocalist Lillian Albazi and her band have released their debut album, After-Image and will soon undertake a tour of the south-eastern states.

Lillian first came to prominence at 22- yearsold with her quintet, debuting at the 2016 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Since then, she has toured Australia extensively playing at key venues and festivals including MONA Museum, Devonport Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Melbourne Recital Centre.

Lillian and her band perform modern arrangements of seminal standards from The Great American/Australian Songbook celebrating the jazz pioneers.

■ It now seems the world is slowly opening up to travellers after the most horrendous twoyears of our lives.

The airlines are opening up new destinations to fit in with the countries that have reached their targets in immunisation.

This has been the biggest event in our lives and we are now entering into a whole new world.

I hope the planet has rebirthed after this two-year break on its resources. Everyone is now gearing to take full advantage of this new beginning.

It’s like starting all over again and I hope we have learned a few lessons in the break that we have had. Let’s hope for a kinder and gentler world.

The exciting messages is that America will be open to us in the new year.

7000 steps every day

■ Taking 7000 steps a day during middle age can keep a person's arteries healthy and reduce their risk of death by up to 70 per cent, a new study concludes.

The findings by researchers from across the United States suggest that this lower number is still enough to protect against serious heart complications rather than the common recommendation of 10,000 steps per day.

The study examined a group of adults between 38 and 50 who took at least 7000 steps daily about three miles and discovered that these individuals were much less likely to die over the next decade.

Mortality rates among both White and Black participants fell by 63 and 70 per cent respectively compared to their sedentary peers.

Study authors also identified a difference among men and women raising their daily step count. Deaths among men fell by 58 per cent however, that rate jumped to 72 per cent among women.

"This cohort study found that higher daily step volume was associated with a lower risk of premature all-cause mortality among Black and White middle-aged women and men," lead author DrAmanda Paluch of the University of Massachusetts and her team writes in the journal JAMA Network Open.

The 2110 volunteers wore an accelerometer from 2005 to 2006 and researchers followed them for an average of nearly 11 years.

The volunteers were all taking part in a program looking into the risks of coronary artery disease. "Participants taking at least 7000 steps, compared with those taking fewer than 7000 steps, had a 50 per cent to 70 per cent lower risk of mortality."

■ A federal court ruled this month that evidence of drugs obtained by police from a package at a FedEx sorting centre was not seized unconstitutionally, rejecting the defendant's arguments that the seizure violated his Fourth Amendment rights.

At the centre of the decision is a little-known agreement allowing law enforcement agencies to seize parcels at the shipping behemoth's sorting centers.

Police are permitted to take packages only if a drug dog indicates there may be contraband inside. Individual cops, however, determine which packages merit attention, allowing them to zero in on people's property, dress up as FedEx delivery men, and proceed with arrests if they testify that a drug dog alerted them appropriately.

Such was the case with Herbert Green, who had his package singled out at a FedEx sorting center after Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) Detective Antonio Garcia noticed a return label from Brownsville, Texas.

That's a "source city for illegal narcotics," the officer said, who was further interested by the parcel's glued seams and the fact that it was a "moving" box. Those get his attention "right away", he testified, because of their material, which he claims are well-suited to shipping drugs.

Marijuana has steadily become more and more socially accepted and popular in recent years.

Now, a new study reveals weed use among college students and their peers reached historically high levels in 2020.

In fact, researchers from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) say marijuana use hasn't been this high since the 1980s.

"The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed the way that young people interact with one another and offers us an opportunity to examine whether drug taking behaviour has shifted through these changes," says NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D., in a media release.

■ Unvaccinated people are 11 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than fully vaccinated people, a new study from theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows.

The study, which examined 600,000 COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations and deaths in 13 states from April 4 to June 19 and from June 20 to July 17, "found further evidence of the power of the vaccination," CDC director Rochelle Walensky said in a press briefing, according to CNBC people were over 10 times more likely to be hospitalised due to COVID-19 and are four-and-a-half half times more likely to contract the virus, according to the study.

The results come just one day after President Biden announced new COVID-19 rules that require private companies with over 100 employees to mandate the vaccine, and federal employees, contractors and healthcare workers to get the shot.

"As we have shown study after study, vaccination works," Walensky said during the press briefing. "CDC will continue to do all we can do to increase vaccination rates across the country by working with local communities and trusted messengers and providing vaccine confidence consults to make sure that people have the information they need to make an informed decision," Walensky said.

Currently, 75 per cent of US adults ages 18 and older have received at least one shot, while 53 per cent of the nation is fully vaccinated, according to The New York Times.

■ Chuck E. Weiss, the musician who helped launch the Viper Room with Johnny Depp and was a fixture of Los Angeles' music scene for decades, died on Tuesday. He was 76. His bandmate Jimmy Wood confirmed his death, telling Variety, "Chuck E. Weiss left the room yesterday morning around 8:30. JJ Holiday was by his side. He was one of a kind and certainly made Los Angeles a better city!"

Known for his friendship with Tom Waits and for being the subject of Rickie Lee Jones' hit song 'Chuck E.'s In Love,' Weiss spent his career as a LA scene-maker, releasing uniquely rhythmic music himself that teetered between blues and rock.

Weiss and Waits eventually decided to move to LA, and the two lived in West Hollywood's Tropicana Motel, a storied hangout for rockers like Joan Jett and the Ramones. The Tropicana Motel became the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites, 8585 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, walking distance to all the Sunset Strip music venues and the local recording studios.

While there, Jones penned the song 'Chuck E.'s In Love' inspired by Weiss, while she was romantically involved with Waits. "He sure has acquired this kinda cool and inspired sorta jazz when he walks, where's his jacket and his old blue jeans? Well this ain't healthy, it is some kinda clean," Jones croons on the track.

■ I recently watched the film starring Victor Mature and the beautiful Hedy Lamarr.

I thought Hedy Lamarr was wonderful in the film and her ‘screen presence’ still captivates viewers all over the world 12 years after her passing.

Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler was born as an only child in Vienna, Austria in 1913.

Her parents were Jewish, her father died before the Holocaust and Hedy later rescued her mother.

As a child she studied piano and in her teenage years played roles in German films under the name of Hedy Kiesler.

In 1933 she became famous when Hedy starred in a Czechoslovakian film titled Ecstasy.

The film became controversial after she appeared in her birthday suit.

At the age of 19 she married for the first time.

Her husband objected to Ecstasy and tried to buy all the copies. He took Hedy to meetings where she learned a lot about military technology.

In 1937 Hedy fled from her domineering husband and went to London.

She met MGM studio chief Louis B Mayer who offered her a film contact and changed her name to Hedy Lamarr.

In 1938 she made her Hollywood debut in English speaking films with her role in Algiers,

co-starring with Charles Boyer. She was soon considered by many to be one of the most beautiful women in films.

Hedy was starring opposite the biggest stars in Hollywood and appeared in films such as Boom Town, Comrade X, Ziegfeld Girl and White Cargo.

But there was another side to Hedy Lamarr that the movie going public knew nothing about.

Hedy hated the Nazis and was a very intelligent woman who spoke six languages. Using some of the knowledge she had gained from her first husband she secretly worked on a radio system to control submarine torpedos by changing frequencies to prevent enemy interception.

Hedy and her friend George Antheil took out

● Hedy Lamaar a patent for the revolutionary invention in 1942 and offered it to the US Military. Although it was not used in WWII it was implemented successfully in 1962 during the Cuban crisis to provide the Navy with secure communications between ships.

Today the principle is used to make mobile phones more secure.

Hedy continued making films and 1949 starred

in the Cecil B. De Mille classic, Sampson and Delilah. Hedy became naturalised citizen of the US in 1953.

Hedy was married six times during her lifetime and had three children. She retired from films in 1958 and settled in Florida.

Her autobiography Ecstasy and Me was published in 1966.

Hedy Lamarr had been one of the wealthiest women in Hollywood and had once owned the mansion used in the film, The Sound of Music.

But in 1966 she was charged with shop lifting and then again in 1991 - both charges were later dropped.

She sued Mel Brooks for mocking her name in the film Blazing Saddles and the case was settled out of court.

Hedy Lamarr passed away in 2000 at the age of 86. In accordance with her wishes her son scattered her ashes in the Vienna Woods.

The first Inventors Day in Germany in 2005 was held in her honour.

What an amazing life this beautiful Hollywood film star led - Hedy Lamarr.

Killing Eve, Free Guy and The Last Duel star Jodie Comer and veteran character actor Stephan Graham (Boardwalk Empire, Greyhound, The Irishman) give powerful award worthy performances in this low budget British drama, an extraordinary emotion charged story set primarily with-in a nursing home shortly before the Covid19 Pandemic and the full force of its impact when it hits, a gripping social commentary on the pandemic that grips like a vice and hits with the force of a baseball bat, never for a second falling into cliché or being offensive or distasteful in any way.

Proves beyond any doubt that Jodie Comer is a force of nature, most notably in a nerve shattering sequence where she finds herself in the care home alone at night as things spiral out of control with patients suffering all around her and no help on the way, all-in-all a potent, poignant, devastating, haunting, raw and overwhelming emotional experience! ... a REAL SURPRISE! Stars: *** Review: Inspired by the Disneyland theme park ride, an intrepid scientist and a riverboat captain go on a mission along the Amazon to find the Tree of Life and discover its healing powers, but they are soon battling a competing German expedition, and must also fight the elements, wild animals and supernatural forces along the way.

If you’re looking for something original in any way in "Jungle Cruise" you won’;t find it, however, it does succeed in returning audiences to the more classical or traditional world of junglehopping action-adventures that have thrilled audiences since the beginning of film, a transcendently silly and wildly extravagant entertainment experience that borrows from everything and everyone that manages to pack a healthy amount of inoffensive good-natured fun.

Dwayne Johnson as the riverboat captain and Emily Blunt as the intrepid and vigorous scientist may not be in the same calibre as Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in the similarly themed Oscar winning classic The African Queen, but they are a good sparing match on screen, aided by British comedian Jack Whitehall as the pompous, toffy-nosed, fish-out-of-water brother in a role that would have suited Terry-Thomas, Alastair Sim, Kenneth More or Robert Morley in generations past.

Delving into the cupboard of the cinematic past, inspirations and comparisons to similarly related films before it like King Solomon s Mines, Romancing The Stone, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Disney s own Pirates of the Caribbean, and even a touch of Dr. Dolittle, to name just a few, are unavoidable and inevitable, but when all is said and done, even if some of the subplots, jokes and through-lines don't quite make the grade, there’s still more than enough action packed fun, humour and CGI thrills to make it worth the effort.

Rourke’s Reviews Squid Game

■ (MA). Nine episodes. Now streaming on Netflix.

This big budget South Korean series has surprisingly taken the world by storm, becoming the most popular Netflix series of all-time.

With its ingenious plotting, dazzling visual design, potent and relevant subject matter, and strong, colourful performances, it’s not hard to see why.

The story is initially set in motion with the introduction of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), a divorced middleaged man who is back living with his ailing mother.

Always asking others for money, Gi-hun isn’t a bad person at heart, but is hugely irresponsible, and owes big money to the local gang boss.

One fateful day, Gi-hun is approached by a well-groomed stranger (Gong Yoo in a brief cameo), who offers the debtstricken loser a chance to win a huge cash amount, by taking part in a secret series of games.

At first disbelieving of the proposal, Gi-hun soon accepts, and after a meticulously planned trip by the game’s organisers, finds himself at a secret location, along with 455 other contestants.

Ominously dressed guards oversee their surroundings, and as the rules are explained, everyone sees the large, clear piggybank hanging over their heads, which will eventually fill with nearly US$40 million.

The winner takes all. However, as the games begin, Gi-hun and his fellow players will soon see just how deadly each task will be.

Squid Game is both exhilarating and thought-provoking, using its Battle Royale-type premise to look at not only class inequality, but at human nature itself, and how each of us would react when given the opportunity to pull yourself (and loved ones) out of financial hardship and despair.

Performances are excellent, with the cast revelling in material which gives them roles which aren’t merely black-or-white.

Stand-outs are Lee (Deliver Us From Evil, The Face Reader, New World) as Gi-hun, Jung Ho-yeon (making her screen debut) as SaeByeok, Lee Yoo-mi (The Russian Novel, Rough Play) as Ji-yeong, and Wi Ha-joon (Midnight, Miss & Mrs. Cops) as officer Hwang.

Writer/director Hwang Donghyuk balances drama, humour and horror effortlessly, and knows when to deliver a brutal blow to the viewer’s stomach.

The film-maker has moved effectively between different genres, from the harrowing true-life drama Silenced (2011), to the hilarious box-office blockbuster Miss

Miss Granny (2014), to the enthralling period epic The Fortress (2017), and now Hwang adds this first-rate Manga-inspired series to his resume. Production values are world-class.

There will be those who will definitely see similarities between this and Takashi Miike’s As The Gods Will (2014), and the Kaiji : Ultimate Gambler movies (all adapted from Mangas), but Hwang has openly stated that he was inspired by numerous Manga comics and graphic novels he’d read and loved, which also includes Battle Royale, which was turned into a classic and highlyinfluential movie in 2000 by the late Kinji Fukasaku.

With Squid Game now a massive success (with an ending that suggests there will be a Season Two), it is the perfect time to delve into other terrific Korean TV series, too many of which go under the radar of general audiences (check out Taxi Driver, My Name, Strangers From Hell, Sell Your Haunted House and the just-arrived Dr Brain).

If you end up loving this, then definitely watch the similarly themed Netflix series Alice In Borderland.

Halloween Kills

■ (MA). 105 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

Very bloody, relentlessly stupid entry in the long-running franchise.

Set minutes after the 2018 film, the story sees an injured Laurie Strode (a weirdly under-utilised Jamie Lee Curtis) being taken to hospital, after her battle with Michael Myers, while a now-grown Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall) will lead the townsfolk on a misguided path via mob justice.

Those close to Laurie will be put in danger.

The first 20 minutes is taken up with ridiculous over-explaining of the Michael Myers mythology, obviously aimed at younger audiences, but long-term fans will find it a waste of time.

Anyone wanting a satisfying ending will be short-changed, as everything is left on a cliffhanger note for the supposedly concluding movie, Halloween Ends, due out next year.

Director David Gordon Green and his co-writers seem more interested in brutal violence and pop culture references than doing anything new.

The music score by original film-maker John Carpenter (collaborating with son Cody) is again the highlight.

British Film Festival returns

■ The British Film Festival has returned to Palace Cinema screens until December 1, and soon the Italian Film Fest opens on November 19, running until December 12.

Now in its ninth year, the British Film Festival celebrates British cinema's fine filmmakers and acting talent, and includes powerful true stories and literary adaptations to biographies and documentaries.

Moulin Rouge

■ Moulin Rouge! The Musical has its Australian premiere performance on Friday, November 12 at Melbourne's Regent Theatre.

Baz Luhrmann's film comes to life onstage remixed into a new musical extravaganza at the Regent Theatre, transformed into the famed 19th century Paris French nightclub complete with the iconic red windmill and towering blue elephant.

■ Melbourne writer/performer Telia Nevile showcased her considerable writing and performing talents in the solo show Little Monster, a digital season presented for the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Little Monster would be a great show to catch if restaged as a live performance, and also keep an eye out for any future shows presented by talented Telia Nevile.

All that glitters is not gold

■ Despite the fact that we lacked numbers of overseas competitors the Cup still stood out as it is known the best Two Mile Race in the world.

The champion mare, Verry Elleegant, proved her worth, taking her state earnings to just over $14 million, which includes nine Group One Races, and named Australia’s best racehorse for the 2020-2021 season.

Yet another feather in the cap of her trainer, Australia’s leading mentor, Chris Waller.

One story that hasn’t been mentioned in the press or on TV, is that her former trainer Darren Weir put the original polish on her, as well as another champion in the Waller camp, Nature Strip.

Back to the Cup, like all viewers we watched intently when they jumped whether the favourite, Incentivise, could get across from barrier 15.

However, Prebble had him sitting nicely in second spot behind Persan, until the turn.

Like everyone as they approached the home turn in the Cup, he went to the front as they straightened and then seemed to lose stride, that was when James McDonald and Verry Elleegant, came at them hard, down towards the 300 metre mark.

Incentivise tried hard coming again, but at that stage no one knew that the five-year-old, sustained a possible fetlock injury and will miss racing for some time.

I didn’t get to the track because of some media restrictions mainly room in the set areas.

I watched intently the TV coverage on 10 and Racing. Com, and noticed hardly any attention was being paid to the connections of Incentivise, ala Peter Moody, his stable Fore-Lady, or the strapper after the race.

Peter Moody said after he race that Incentivise wasn’t lame immediately, but soon after, he was favoring that leg, and had inflammation around it.

The injury is in the fetlock, so they have to have a good check of the area.

Also, after the Cup, last year’s winner, Twilight Payment was found to have cast a shoe in the race, finishing 11th, and it was later announced that the nine-year-old would be retired.

Another casualty was Tralee Rose, who sustained a laceration to her leg and was taken to the Werribee Equine Research Hospital for observation.

Another incredible thing about the Cup, was there were a number of part-owners in both Incentivise, and Verry Elleegant, and they had a ball, but I would not like to have paid the bill, for the party after.

A great number of them and their friends rocked up to the up-market Society Restaurant, in Bourke St for the big night.

Congratulations all round, but commiserations to Peter Moody and his team.

■ Racing Victoria recently released its results for the 2020-21 financial year ending June 30, 2021, which shows the industry has weathered the COVID Pandemic, and has continued to invest in the future of the sport.

Through prudent management and the incredible efforts of all industry stakeholders to ensure the safe continuation of racing under strict biosecurity protocols.

Racing Victoria has reported a net operating surplus of $28.7 million.

With the first two months of the 2021 Spring Racing Carnival conducted without crowds and only limited numbers, which we saw with the Derby and the Melbourne Cup. The full year surplus is being utilised to support Racing Clubs across the State who missed key direct revenue streams for a second year.

Countdown to November 26

■ Harness participants (trainers and drivers) have been fortunate during lockdown that they have been able to continue on a daily basis of going to the races.

Unfortunately the general public have not been able to attend a meeting for almost two years on and off, however all that will change from November 26, when people will be allowed back on track.

■ Two meetings on Monday November 1 commenced the week at both ends of the state with Cobram in the afternoon and Terang at night.

Bunbartha trainer/driver John Newberry opened proceedings at Cobram when 4Y0 Imperial Count-Sunshine Paco mare Malhana Muscles scored in the Benstud Trotters Handicap over 2170 metres.

Raced by the Newberry family, Bella Countessa enjoyed a sweet passage one/one from barrier two and after joining the leaders Starlight Storm and Milly An Eyre three wide on the final bend, finished best to register a 1.9 metre margin over Lexington Queen from the tail, with Malhana Muscles third 2.8 metres back using the sprint lane after trailing the weakening pacemaker. The mile rate 2-05.6.

■ Monegeetta trainer/driver David Miles landed the Xmas Party @ Cobram 17/12 2Y0 Maiden Pace over 1670 metres with Excel Stride-Scarlet Stride gelding Storm Stride in a rate of 156.7.

Trailing the first start poleline leader Jarrad Said which shifted away from the inside on the home turn, Storm Stride after gaining a run inside him dashed clear to account for the leader by 4.3 metres in a mile rate of 1-56.7. Another colt on debut Sporty Leo was third 1.5 metres away after following the pair.

■ Narong trainer Mark Buckingham used the services of Charlton’s Ryan Sanderson to snare the 1670 metre Xerri Evans Cobram Pace with Lonestar Lad, a consistent 5Y0 gelded son of Lonestar Legend and Particular in 1-58.7.

Going forward three wide in the last lap from mid-field, Lonestar Lad just lasted by a neck from the fast finishing Barrett from near last, with Good Time Nedra (one/three) third a head away.

■ Goulburn Valley based owner/trainer Greg Fleming’s Four Starzzz Shark-Electrical Storm gelding Letsgobro on debut, led throughout to land the Northern Victoria Livestock 2Y0 Maiden Pace over 1670 metres with Laura Crossland in the sulky.

Always travelling kindly, Letsgobro got very tired on straightening, but held on by a head from Bettor Roll On (four back the markers) which ran home well. Cocora held on for third 4.6 metres back after racing exposed. The mile rate 1-58.2.

■ Marong duo Terry and Jacinta Gange scored an impressive victory with 4Y0 Major BronskiCzarina Katerina Beau Bronski in the 1670 metre Cobram Hotel Pace.

Trained by Terry and driven by Jack Laugher, Beau Bronski after being restrained from gate three settled mid-field in the moving line as Geraldton Wax led from gate five.

Despite making the final bend four wide, Beau Bronski ran home strongly to prevail by 5.7 metres in advance of Cooks Canvas which faced the breeze for the final circuit, returning a mile rate of 1-57.3. Major Monty after following the winner was third a head away.

■ The highlight of the Terang meeting was The O’Keeffe once a quality race named after the late Jim O’Keeffe, a Terang stalwart who gave plenty to the industry, but has been downgraded in recent years to a disappointing stake of $7000 – the victor Alta Christiano-Lady Lucy Lou filly Eva Matao for Great Western’s Peter Manning and daughter Kerryn fresh from winning The Redwood at Maryborough the day before. Bred and raced by Brisbane’s Aldons family, Eva Matao a brilliant beginner led throughout from gate four over the 1680 metre trip to register an easy 11 metre margin in 1-56.1 from Sea Lover which chased hard. Delwyns Son (three back the markers – breeze last lap) battled on gamely for third 1.4 metres away.

Skye Cruiser was given an easy time from gate five trailing the leader Beach Wreck (gate seven) which ran along, kicking away prior to the home turn with a commanding margin. Not shirking the issue, Skye Cruiser chased hard using the sprint lane on turning to gain the day by a nose over the leader, with Mighty Regal a game third holding down third 10.5 metres back after racing in the open. ■ It was welcome back to the winners list for Mt Rowan trainer Julian Jobe after Art MajorArctic Fire colt Vapar Fire greeted the judge in the Bertocchi Smallgoods 3Y0 Maiden Pace over 2180 metres. Driven by John Caldow, Vapar Fire raced uncovered throughout after starting outside the front line, proving too strong at the finish for the leader Wunderland and Ire Of The Dragon which used the sprint lane after trailing the front runner and stablemate from the pole.

The margins 1.3 metres by a head in 2-04.3.

■ Four year old Muscle Hill-Kyvalley Aldebaran entire Aldebaran Knox bred and raced by Duncan McPherson’s Aldebaran Lodge Pty Ltd and a host of others, was successful in the 2180 metre Greavesy’s Fruit & Veg Terang Trotters Handicap. Trained and driven by Mattie Craven, Aldebaran Knox starting from 20 metres stepped cleanly to possie four back along the markers as Dream Over led from barrier two.

Coming away from the inside racing for the bell, Aldebaran Knox raced clear approaching the home turn to score by 7 metres from 30 metre backmarker Honey Bourbon which followed him all of the way. Rank outsider Surprise To Me after trailing the leader was third 7.4 metres back.

■ Yarra Valley’s annual Melbourne Cup day meeting was held without patrons on Tuesday and one winner worth a mention was Girgarre trainer/driver Gary Pekin’s 4Y0 gelding Rocks Can Roll in the De Bortoli Pace over 2150 metres.

Going forward three wide from outside the front line to park outside the leader Officially Shady (gate two), Rocks Can Roll, a son of Pet Rock and Bowland Borg strode to the front on the home turn to score by 1.6 metres over the pacemaker in a rate of two minutes even.

Paddington Central was third 4.4 metres back after trailing the leader.

by Jason Lee to settle seven back along the markers as Torrid Saint flew away from gate four to lead with reinsman Jack Laughter content to allow Major Role (gate two) to ease off his back and takeover shortly after the start. In a spread out indian file field with no one wanting to go forward, Lee eased General Dodge away from the markers with around a lap and a half to travel looking for someone ahead of him to give him cover which didn’t eventuate leaving General Dodge exposed for the rest of the journey.

Gradually creeping forward, General Dodge joined Major Role on the final bend and in a twinkling of an eye, dashed clear with the race in his keeping, cruising to the wire to record an easy 9 metre victor over Major Role, with Torrid Saint coming away from the markers to finish third 1.2 metres back 3.8 metres in advance of Malcolms Rhythm out wide from near the tail. In sections of 31.2, 31.2, 28 and 26.4, General Dodge returned a mile rate of 1-58.7 (3.3 seconds) outside Lennytheshark’s track record set in 2017.

■ The Trotters Cup saw Andy and Kate Gath’s much improved 5Y0 Angus Hall-Winfield Invasion gelding Havehorsewilltravel, a former Kiwi, victorious for leviathan stable client Norm Jenkin, a Queensland developer who has raced a number of horses in the stable including prolific winners Tornado Valley and McLovin.

Driven by Kate, Havehorsewilltravel coming from a 20 metre equal backmark settled at the tail of the field with the exception of Well Defined which galloped a couple of times. Not happy with the speed being set by Brandlo Prince (barrier four) which had crossed Jewel In The Crown (barrier three), Kate went forward midrace to park outside the leader racing for the bell.

Asked for an effort on turning, Havehorsewilltravel answered the call to score by 1.3 metres from Robbie Royale (one/one last lap – three wide home turn) under Kyvalley Chief (one/two).

Brandlo Prince held third 3.1 metres back. In quarters of 30.5, 30.8, 29.4 and 30, Havehorsewilltravel set a new track record mile rate of 2-01.4 bettering Kvintet Avenger’s 2-01.8 set in 2014 by .4 of a second.

Statewide Record demand for Ombudsman

■ The Victorian Ombudsman has experienced unprecedented demand for its services with complaints to the office about public organisations reaching record highs.

Tabling her 2020-21 Annual Report in Parliament last weekj, Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the decisions of public servants neglecting human rights in their decision-making led to many of the complaints.

Complaints to the office within its jurisdiction increased 12 per cent to more than 18,000 with data also revealing the Ombudsman’s geographical spread increasing.

“We have taken complaints from almost half of all Victorian postcodes,” Ms Glass said.

“We continued to provide a service to the public every working day. Unlike many other public services, our phone lines remained open all year, while online complaints increased.”

Local councils topped the list of most complained about public bodies; and complaints about community and public housing, Corrections, COVID-19 public health directions, Registry of Birth Deaths and Marriages and Fines Victoria were also common.

Vale Bert, the ultimate triple threat ■ In the world of showbiz, there is no better accolade than to be termed as a ‘triple threat’.

It usually means that a person excels at acting, singing and dancing.

Entertainer Bert Newton was all of that, and more. He was Victoria’s media friend from the first days of Melbourne television in 1956-57, and even earlier on radio 3XY. He kept us informed with interviews, he made us laugh and crywith TV sketches, but more than anything he was a trusted companion in our lounge rooms for more than 60 years.

Victoria lost one of its favourite sons with his passing on Saturday, October 30, at age 83. And I now say farewell to a valued personal friend.

Bert Newton started his media career as a youngster on the Peter’s Pals children’s program on 3XY, under the watchful eye of producer Doug McKenzie (later TV clown ‘Zag’). At age 15, Bert became a panel operator at the same station.

Still a teenager, Bert was offered the compere’s role on The Late Show in 1957 at HSV-7, but it was not long before he joined GTV-9 with plans for him to host In Melbourne Today, a sister program to Graham Kennedy’s In Melbourne Tonight.

Bert and Graham clicked on air, as did Bert later with Don Lane. But

I first met Bert when I was a parttime worker in the Channel 9 publicity department in 1975, when Graham Kennedy had two shows a week, and Ernie Sigley had another pair of programs.

Through work with 3AW nighttime duo Bruce Mansfield and Philip Brady, I came to appear on Good Morning Australia, and was invited to appear in a regular weekly spot.

Bert appear fascinated with my business endeavours: producing TV shows for Optus and Channel 31, publishing local newspapers. He had had his put in his own effort in trying to lease 3AK, and manage 3DB. Bert and Patti had their own top-rating morning program on 3UZ. I was honoured to be invited to the taping of his This Is Your Life episode at the Channel 9 studios in Sydney.

Alongside his TV career, Bert juggled radio shows, and a number of cameos in stage shows including Wicked, Annie, Grease and The Rocky Horror Show.

Bert Newton always set himself a punishing work schedule; he tried hard to provide security for his family.

Family - especially his much loved grandchildren - were at the core of his life, along with a profound Catholic faith.

Bert Newton was a fine and loyal friend. In mid-November, showbiz colleagues will come together at a group he helped to establish.

TV across Australia every day

● Bruce Mansfield, Bert Newton (Ash Long, at back) on the set of Good Morning Australia, 1998 ■ My association with 3AW radio hosts Bruce Mansfield and Philip Brady led to me appearing every week on Bert Newton’s daily national TV program, Good Morning Australia.

Bruce had an antiques and collectables spot on the GMA show, and my job was to inject some physical comedy which Bert told me he saw as being in the mould of Jackie Gleason. I don’t think he was kidding me. We would do just about anything to get a TV laugh.

The Thursday morning spot (taped on a Tuesday afternoon!) would see me dressed up in various costumes, and I was also the show’s Father Christmas at the time. We would also prepare a whole range of pre-recorded spots from around Australia.

Bert was always generous. I was producing nightly TV programs at the time - Mansfield’s Melbourne, Mansfield’s Sydney and Mansfield’s Brisbane. I also put together a weekly four-hour Night Owl Theatre, full of advertorials and bad movies, for Channel 31. The shows had a great cult following, and Bert said he was fan.

Bert would make cameo appearances - always at no charge. He would contribute forewords to support publications I was editing: the Nightlines book, a magazine of the same name, and Mansfield’s Melbourne Magazine. He was a keen reader of the Melbourne Observer.

Bert trusted me with his mobile phone number - a privilege I would never abuse. He knew I was a Freemason, and would leave voicemails: “Bro. Long, it’s Worshipful Brother Newton here.” He was genuinely impressed with the charity work of the fraternity.
