FREE TRANSPORT FOR VETERANS

■ Veterans will be able to travel for free across Victoria’s entire public transport network during Veterans’ Health Week with the support of the State Government. Natalie Suleyman, Minister for Veterans Natalie Suleyman, encouraged all Victorian veterans, war widows and war widowers to access free travel across public transport in Victoria from Sunday (Oct. 13) for omne week. Veterans’ Health Week is run each year across Australia focused on the health and wellbeing of those who have served and their families. This year’s theme – Keep Connected – aims to promote good health and wellbeing in the everyday lives of veterans and their families and shine a light on the importance of social togetherness. Veterans, war widows and war widowers will be able to travel free throughout Veterans’ Health Week across all bus, tram and train networks in metro Melbourne and regional Victoria.

■ Police have arrested a 28-year-old Eltham man after a pursuit of an allegedly stolen car through Melbourne’s southeast suburbs on Tuesday morning (Oct. 8). Police observed a black Jeep Grand Cherokee allegedly travelling in excess of 100-kmh in a 40-kmh zone on the Monash Freeway about 11.30pm on Monday. Officers successfully deployed stop sticks on Hallam South Road, near Hallam Railway Station, about 11.50pm The Jeep ran over a second set of stop sticks on the Princes Highway, Berwick shortly later. A pursuit was initiated before the Jeep ran over a third set of stop sticks on the Princes Highway, Pakenham and came to a stop.

● Natalie Suleyman, State Minister To take up the offer, veterans need to travel with either a Victorian Veterans Card – Victoria, an ex-service association or returned from active service badge, a Department of Veterans’ Affairs gold or white card or a Category ‘V’ Victorian public transport concession card. Holders of Veterans Concession myki, EDA/ TPI or War Veterans/War Widow Free Travel Pass can touch on and off as usual. Myki fares won’t be charged during this period. Accessing your veterans card is made easy through the Service Victoria app and website, and it has already been downloaded by more than 19,000 veterans. The State Government also supports and honours veterans and their families with free public transport travel on ANZAC and Remembrance Day and a range of initiatives such as the Veterans Card – Victoria, Public Sector Veteran Employment Strategy, RSLActive and a range of grant programs. “We owe our veterans so much appreciation and thanks – free public transport during Veterans Health Week is one way we can show our gratitude and support,” Ms Suleyman said. Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Public and Active Transport, said: "This initiative will ensure our veterans can explore everything Victoria has to offer on our extensive public transport network this Veterans’ Health Week.”
