PET INSPECTIONS ACROSS RANGES
■ A team of Yarra Ranges Shire staff is making inspections across the municipality for unregistered pets. Pet registration renewals were due in April, with all cats and dogs over the age of three months needing to be registered with Council and microchipped. “Council's Community Safety Team is now turning their attention to the small number of pet owners who have not been able to complete the process this year,” a Council representative said. “The vast majority of pet owners have renewed their registrations and we thank the community for their ongoing commitment to responsible pet ownership. “Registration fees go towards funding the following services: ■ Payment of the annual State Government Levy ■ Lifetime Pet Registration Tag - Including free replacement tags ■ Reuniting lost animals ■ Off-lead dog parks ■ Investigation of animal related complaints and compliance issues ■ Cat Trap programs ■ Providing Council's responsible pet ownership programs ■ Supporting Council's Foster Carer Registration Program “After a sustained communication campaign of text messages, emails and phone calls, officer will now be door knocking residents and visiting recreational areas to provide pet ownership education, information packs and possibly progress enforcement actions. This can include a $385 fine per unregistered pet. “Pet owners can access relevant information and register their animals at any time through the Council’s website at Pet registrations Yarra Ranges Council. Residents with any queries should contact Council's Community Safety Team on 1300 368 333.

● Cr Sophie Todorov, Mayor ■ Funding totalling $16.2 million was set to be included in a revised budget scheduled to be voted upon by Yarra Ranges Councillors last night (Tues., June 25), as this edition of The Local Paper went to press. “One of the top priorities identified by our community is improving and maintaining drains to reduce flooding. Council has addressed this in the 2024-25 Budget through a significantly increased commitment of $16.2 million to be spent on drainage and related infrastructure capital upgrades over the next six years across the municipality – a 300 per cent increase from last year’s budget,” said a written report to Councillors, chaired by Mayor Cr Sophie Todorov. “This is in addition to $23.0 million of operating expenditure on infrastructure and drainage maintenance (6 per cent increase) also included in the 2024-25 Budget year.” Other areas of priority include: ■ Maintaining our roads, footpaths, and trails ($22 million, a 13 per cent increase from last year) ■ Improving and maintaining parks, trees, sporting facilities, bushlands and reserves ($22 million, 8 per cent increase).
