Boners welcome Yarra Glen ■ Mild weather conditions on Saturday (June 26) saw Thornton Eildon District Football Netball Club welcome Yarra Glen netballers and Seville/Woori Women’s Football team to the home ground finishing a busy week for the club .

Bingo had run on the Tuesday at sponsor Rubicon Hotel, and there was the farewell of old friend to the club Glen ‘Yarra’ Toppin on Thursday at the club rooms, and the regular training sessions Tuesday and Thursday evenings with meals back this week.

Thank-you to all our volunteers, members and supporters for their help this week from line marking, canteen, photos, Bingo, set up and pack down for Thursday, umpires, coaches, trainers, exec committee & general committee, Auskick crew, bar, scoreboard, time keeper, suppliers and sponsors … the list is long however its fantastic to have our community come together.

This week our inclusions saw Gerogie Beggs back into the side, Kasey and Kirsty debut game, with Kirsty bringing goaling experience and a mature netball mindset with Kasey, our little young gun local lady slotting in so naturally. This Thorntonite will be certainly one to watch in

Yarra Glen sits second on the ladder currently, and we previously played YG on their home turf which proved a hard game losing that game however the Thornton girls had a real spark with Tenielle leading the way rising the positivity and belief we are capable.

Liz Westwood made some great considered positional choices to get the most out of our team, with the girls coming out strong the first quarter on a wet court in attacking and defence.

Heather Mason, Maddie Bednarski and Kasey Johnson kept Yarra to 2 and Thornton 3. The second quarter saw some adjustments giving Kasey Johnson a run in the ring with Sarah Stevenson scoring her first goal playing for Thornton, however Yarra found some form outscoring T/E ending the second down on 6 to 9 Yarra Glen.

In the third quarter T/E pushed on with Sarah Stevenson scoring five goals ending the quarter with the team on 11 and Yarra Glen still within reach also scoring 5 for the quarter ending on 14.

■ The weather cleared at Thornton for the Division 2 women’s sideto take the field against Seville/Woori Yallock for an afternoon game.

Inclusions were Shae Carter and Kirsten Brice with a number of regulars out this week including Tash Hay, Kim Baulch, Tilly Bessant, Ema Newton, Kirstie Wild to name a few.

It was a tight game with both sides working hard right throughout, with Magenta Connolly bagging two goals for the game and Tahnee Heard scoring her first goal for Thornton which we are sure there will be many more to come in the future.

Stand out performers was Lynden Cadwell, Lucy McRae in ruck, goal queen for the day Magenta. Our legs: Lisa Stanchinotti and gun Sophie Penney. Our best player for the day was new recruit Hannah Rustic and we are blown away by Hannah stepping into the side stepping it up this week.

This game, was the first game since the womens football team formation that they have held another team scoreless so realistically it was a whole team effort.

Local Sport Yea Golf Amid the Encircling Doom Wednesday (June 23) saw weather forecasts predicting rain but the eight boys who ventured out played bisque par and were back in the clubrooms by midday.

Bisque par involves players deciding before a hole played whether they will take a handicap stroke or not for that particular hole.

Winner on CB was Phil Armstrong (22) from Bob Glenister (9) on -4. There was no NTP on the 18th and Bill Dredge won the Club Award.

- Alan Pell ★ Winter tis here First, it was a pause on golf. COVID rules again. Then when we are able to return to the course the Winter elements take over, too wet. So when there is nothing else to do and all are feeling a little blue it is off to the local coffee shop we go. Mint n Jam for a warm cup of hot chocolate or coffee .Their chatter could be heard a couple of shops away. No one or thing was going to dampen the comradeship of the local golfing fraternity we would live to fight another day.

A little birdie flew in to report five Yea members went to the sand scrapes of Avenel on June 17 for a Par three event representing the vets. I am somewhat flabbergasted at some of the scores.

Never heard such a score before but congratulations to our Lady Member Helen Burnett (53) came in with a score of 57 points winning B Grade. Can’t imagine you are going to stay on that handicap for very long Another new lady member Val Howard 45 points, runner-up Congratulations.

On Saturday, June 20, six ladies thankfully greeted with a nice day but sadly scores not so good . Winner was our beautiful Margie Wright, 29 pts.

Moving onto Wednesday (June 23).It was cold. We woke to a heat wave of 10 degrees, overcast but not raining as predicted. Seven girls braved the day, still positive, blowing a gale but not raining.

What a hard day at the office. Great hits, just bogged but still not raining. Another monthly medal and the third round of the silver spoon in contention.

In came the winner Congratulations Sharon Grogan (42) 78 points, another job well done. She is a member who is coming along in leaps n bounds.

Our NTP ever so consistent Captain Miranda Gill plus gobblers for Di Holdsworth and Vicki Clements. Thank you to those on duty for the beautiful afternoon tea. Also be very mindful of the wet conditions and drive your carts appropriately.

I would like to congratulate Seymour for winning the Division One pennant. A competition which was a pleasure to be in with you and the other clubs. Competition, but always a great environment.

- Karen Sangster ★ Mixed 4BBB Championship Saturday saw nine pairs participate in the Mixed 4 Ball Best Ball Championship at Yea. Once again the predicted rain didn’t eventuate and the course played really well but a little longer than usual. Winners of the Championship were two recent new members Anthony Coleman (4) and Sharon Grogan (41) with 44 points. They received $20 each plus a wonderful trophy each, designed and made by fellow member John Tanner. Second place went to Michael Spagnolo (7) and Di Elliott (26) with 38 points ($10 each) Third on CB were Vicki Clements and Greg Clements on 35 points (1 ball each).

There was also a stableford event on Saturday for those not involved in 4 Ball. Winner with 32 points was Chris Smith (19) who won $25. Second was Rick Wills (7) with 30 points. NTP on the 18th was Alan Pell and Mark Mullaly won the Club Award.

Next Saturday (July 3e) will see the second round of the NJ Murray Stableford being contested. It will also be the playoff for the Prideaux Cup between two members of our recent winning pennant team, Jonathan Fisher and Greg Clements. Round two matches in the Club Knockout should be played soon. If you haven’t arranged a round one match by July 7 then you could be both eliminated from the competition. Chooklotto winner on Saturday was Kevin Coghlan winning $60.

Fix K’lake-Heid. Rd ■ Speaking in State Parliament, Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish called on Roads Minister Ben Carroll to meet with Murrindindi and Nillumbik Councillors and drive from St Andrews to Kinglake, and back again.

Ms McLeish said Mr Carroll needs to understand the dangers of the road and note important safety measures that can be made.

“The Heidelberg-Kinglake Road has been the cause of community angst for years.

There are ongoing safety concerns about sharp bends and the narrowness of the road which is particularly dangerous when accessed by large trucks and “Devastatingly, a fatal accident occurred in May this year, after a young woman's car veered off the road hitting a tree. This accident further highlighted safety concerns on the road and the urgent need for action.”

CHALLENGE TO MINISTER

■ Yarra Ranges Shire continues to work through clean-up of the masses of tree debris as a result of the June storm.

The Council is experiencing its own challenges in removing tree debris from roads and roadsides.

Local residents are wondering how to get rid of large trees and branches from their yards.

The volume of material for residents is more than they would normally clean-up using Council’s fortnightly green waste collection, and with current wet and cold conditions and green tree material, burning off is not an option.

The Council says it will require a shared response between the Federal and State Governments, Council and local communities.

As a first priority, Yarra Ranges Council has focused on public safety and clearing roads to enable safe access for residents and works crews, and to make safe properties where trees from Council land were left hanging, or leaning on other trees.

The Council is providing a Special Storm Event Tree Branch Collection for residents throughout the Yarra Ranges who have been impacted by the storm.

This collection will enable residents to remove bulky tree branches from their property that are up to around 200mm by 2m in length.

■ Mitchell Shire Council is participating in Plastic Free July.

The project can be as easy as picking one single-use plastic item to avoid or swap for a reusable alternative. Many people choose to avoid these top-four single-use plastics: ■ Take-away coffee cups ■ Plastic shopping bags ■ Plastic straws ■ Water bottles.

Drug bust at Mansfield ■ Police have arrested nine people as part of an ongoing investigation into the trafficking and dealing of cocaine and other illicit drugs in Mansfield and surrounding areas.

Mansfield Uniform officers, supported by members of the Seymour Divisional Tasking Unit, Seymour Divisional Firearms Officer, Dog Squad, Benalla Crime Investigation Unit and Mansfield Highway Patrol, executed warrants at three residential properties across Mansfield on June 17.

Police seized quantities of cocaine, methylamphetamine, cannabis, a taser, drug trafficking paraphernalia, cash and a GPS tracker.

Three people were arrested including: ■ A man in his 30s who was arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine, possessing a drug of dependence, and possessing a prohibited weapon. He was remanded to appear at Myrtleford Magistrates’ Court on June 18 where he was sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order and required to complete 120 hours of community service.

■ A 29-year-old Mansfield woman was arrested and interviewed for possessing a drug of dependence. She was released pending summons.

■ A 29-year-old Mansfield man was arrested and interviewed for possessing a drug of dependence. He was released pending summons.

Throughout the month of June, police arrested a further six people as part of the investigation, including: ■ Following the execution of a search warrants at an individual’s residential and business premises on Monday June 14, Police charged a 44-year-old Mansfield man with possessing a drug of dependence. He was bailed to appear at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on September 22. Police seized quantities of cocaine and cash at the business address.

■ A 53-year-old man was arrested and charged with possessing a drug of dependence following the execution of a warrant in Merrijig. He was bailed to appear at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on September 22.

■ Four females aged in their 20s were arrested and interviewed for possessing cocaine after Police became aware of alleged drug use at a social function via social media. The females were issued with diversion notices.

A further two search warrants were executed at Goughs Bay as part of the investigation where Police seized quantities of cannabis, ammunition, and controlled weapons.

Sustainable houses

■ Sustainable House Day will be held in Nillumbik on Sunday, October 17.

The Nillumbik Trail – a collaboration between Nillumbik Shire Council and Clean Energy Nillumbik – is an opportunity for residents with sustainable houses to open their doors to visitors to inspire and equip them to make their homes more comfortable and less expensive to run.

Eligible homes must be located in Nillumbik and contain at least four sustainable features. Retrofitted homes are particularly sought after. Examples include: ■ insulation ■ double-glazing ■ energy efficient appliances such as heat pump hot water, reverse cycle heating and cooling, and induction cooktops ■ solar panels ■ battery ■ electric vehicles ■ water efficient appliances and garden Mayor Cr Peter Perkins encourages homeowners and visitors to get involved.

■ Cr Damien Gallagher reported to last week’s Murrindindi Shire Council meeting that on June 16 the Lions Club of Alexandra members installed the new board for 2021-22.

“Outgoing President Ray Mathieson handed over to the new President, John Beale. John is proud to lead the small club of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in our community, and especially so as Alexandra Lions celebrate its 50th anniversary this coming year.

“Alexandra Speedway volunteer, Geoff Day, was very pleased to report that the 2021-22 National Junior Sedan Title is to be contested in Victoria for the first time in five years.

“For the first time ever, Alexandra will be hosting the event which will attract competitors from across the country, on April 8-11.” ★ Cr Gallagher said: “Regarding the state’s transition away from commercial native timber logging in state forests, Council officers will be leading the application for a Local Development Strategy grant.

■ Liberal heavy-hitter Louise Staley last week presented a petition of 508 signatures to State Parliament about the creek has been known as ‘Jim Crow Creek’ since the early days of the area.

“It is an important land mark, a part of the natural environment and the history of the Hepburn and M tAlexander Shires and the State of Victoria.

“Many past and present residents of the Hepburn/Mt. Alexander Shires area are concerned about the proposals under consideration to change the name of Jim Crow Creek.”

Business support

■ Sandringham MLA Brad Rowswell last week spoke in State Parliament about small business support.

“I rise to speak on behalf of a local business owner, a business owner that close to three weeks ago was promised support by the Andrews Labor Government who effectively closed down his business as part of their lockdown.

“He, Andrew of Beaumaris Books in the Concourse in Beaumaris, submitted an application for the government’s business costs assistance program round 2 on June 3.

“The Acting Premier on that day said at his news conference that funds would start flowing by the end of the week, that being Friday, June 4.

“Today, 19 days later, Andrew from Beaumaris Books in the Concourse has received an email saying that his application is being assessed.

“There is no information on an expected time frame and, in Andrew’s words, he says, ‘I feel sick’—and this is not good enough. He is about to face a big cash flow issue at the end of the month as the end of the month arrives, and the Acting Premier implied that the funds would be made available quickly.

“I am aware of at least one other small business owner who as of yesterday has not received information regarding his application either.

“The Andrews Labor Government have promised support for these small businesses, many of which are on their knees. They need to deliver it and they need to deliver it now.”

Well done Sandra ■ Sandra MacNeil’s receipt of a gold service award from Basketball Victoria, recognising her 35 years of dedication to community basketball, has been recognised in State Parliament.

Vicki Ward, Eltham MLA, said: “Sandra has been steadfastly determined and dedicated in supporting her local community, particularly when it comes to basketball.

“Her recognition of the importance of community connections, particularly in the new housing area, drove Sandra to become president of the Greenhills Basketball Club for 11 years and to help it be a place where kids are supported and family is embraced.

“Her role extended to scoring senior championships and state-level games and working as a special projects officer with the Diamond Valley Basketball Association in the 1990s.

“Recently Sandra showed me a letter she had written about an upgrade to the Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre to the Shire of Diamond Valley in 1993. While it may have taken 27 years, thanks to this government works began last year on an upgrade very close to the one Sandra suggested so many years ago,” Ms Ward said.

The Rotary Club of Yea held its changeover dinner, and one of the features was the induction of new member Tippy (Supattra Wannasubchae) Treacherous conditions on Heidelberg-Kinglake Rd have been raised in State Parliament by Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish. "I have been contacted by representatives from both Murrindindi and Nillumbik Councillors who want to see this road made safe. The community are also desperate for safety improvements to be undertaken along this road. They have been waiting for too long. Barriers need to be added along the side of the road to prevent drivers and cyclists from dropping off the cliff, road maintenance needs to take place and widening of the road where possible. The current signs in place to prevent trucks travelling the road clearly are not effective, alternative options need to be considered. The road is even more treacherous during bad weather, which is quite frequent in Kinglake.

Kinglake is known for fog and it is difficult to see sharp bends in the rain and at night.”

A ‘media event’ was scheduled yesterday (Tue.) at Eildon Eildon Boat Club/Lake Eildon Marina. Purpose of the event was to showcase the newly completed 'Floating Cities' Project, which has delivered important access and safety upgrades to the entrance road to the Lake Eildon Marina and Houseboat Marina, as well as a new, environmentally friendly wash-down bay facility.

Murrindindi Shire Council’s fee for insurance policies has continued to rise each year. At last week’s Shire meeting, Councillors delegated Chief Executive Officer Livia Bonazzi to approve the payment of the 2021-22 premium for its Asset Insurance Policy for the amount of $150,586.59 (including GST).

■ Murrindindi Council last week resolved to continue operations of the Alexandra Landfill into the Western Valley, designing the landfill for its maximum lifespan, whilst carrying out construction of landfill cells in a staged approach.

Crs Ilona Gerencser and Karine Haslam proposed the motion.

“Following a thorough analysis of future scenarios and consultation with the Goulburn Valley Waste and Resource Recovery Group it is evident that Option A in this report is the most desirable outcome,” Councillors were told in a report from officers.

“To continue the development and use of the Alexandra landfill beyond its current life span to the maximum lifespan of the landfill (approx.

30 years) provides the most surety and best value for the provision of residual waste services to our community.

“It is noteworthy that the Alexandra Landfill and all alternative landfills are managed under EPA licence with some of the strictest conditions in the world for constructing and operating the sites.

“The sites are built to world’s best practice and undergo a thorough regime of environmental monitoring and external auditing,” the report said.

Armed robbery at Seymour ■ Detectives from Mitchell Crime Investigation Unit are seeking assistance to identify a man following an armed robbery at a service station in Seymour.

Investigators have been told a man entered the premises on Goulburn Valley Highway on about 7.50am on Sunday, June 20.

The man produced a firearm and threatened the store attendant before he demanded cash.

The attended handed over an amount of money before the offender rode off from the store on a push bike. He was last seen heading north towards Seymour-Avenel Rd. No-one was physically injured during the incident.

The man is described as being aged in his 20s, Caucasian and has a solid build.

He was last seen wearing a black cap with a white peak, black sunglasses, a grey and black balaclava, black Volcom jumper, black pants and black shoes. He was also carrying a black backpack.

■ The new aquatic area at Mill Park Leisure has opened with a splash, welcoming new and returning visitors to the centre after an extraordinary transformation.

The centre now features four new and upgraded pools including a 25-metre lap pool, a warm water program pool, a children’s play pool and a dedicated learn-to-swim pool.

The innovative centre has been designed with a focus on accessibility with the installation of a pool pod, providing independent lift access into the pool, state-of-the-art hoists, two Changing Places accessible toilets and change rooms and ramps into the lap pool and warm water pool.

City of Whittlesea Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said Council was excited to be reopening the inclusive community facility at a time when many residents are eager to recommence their health and wellbeing routines after the easing of the Victorian Government’s latest COVID restrictions.

“The transformation of Mill Park Leisure into an accessible health and wellness hub strengthens Council’s commitment to providing high quality and inviting facilities for the whole community to enjoy,” Ms Wilson said.

"The centre brings us one step closer to achieving our community vision – to transform our City into a place for all that supports residents to reach their health and fitness goals in a safe and inclusive space.

With more than 1600 enrolments in Mill Park Leisure’s premium learn-to-swim program, the reopening of the aquatic area marks an exciting time for City of Whittlesea families.

South Morang mum Rebecca Saitta said she is glad to have a new pool close to home to take her children Mason, 8, and Milana, 6, to swimming lessons.

“Once my kids learnt there were waterslides there, they said ‘I want to go there’, and the kids are able to use those facilities for free after their swimming lessons,” Mrs Saitta said. “They’re pretty excited.”

The City of Whittlesea has invested $20 million into the Mill Park Leisure redevelopment and has received $2 million in funding from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund and $3 million from the Community Sport Infrastructure Fund.

Admission to Mill Park Leisure is currently capped at 300 people, in line with the Victorian Government’s health advice and the facility has a COVIDSafe plan in place to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

ROTARY IN ACTION

■ The Rotary Club of Yea held its 35th annual Changeover Dinner at Beaufort Manor last Thursday evening (June 24) with COVID restrictions limiting the audience to 75.

President Carol Hogg welcomed various dignitaries including the CEO of the Murrindindi Shire, Livia Bonazzi; Mayor Cr Sandice McAuley; District Governor Bruce Anderson; and District Governor Elect-Anne Reid, along with fellow Rotarians, family members and friends.

Carol then gave a summary of her year, in which the Rotary International theme was 'Rotary Opens Opportunities'. The Rotary Club of Yea is part of Rotary District 9790, made up of more than 60 clubs and with a current membership of more than1600.

Carol commented on many things that the club is involved in and how the club projects continue to develop and grow, though due to COVID. The only major event to occur was the popular Cycle Dindi (in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Alexandra).

COVID caused a rethink for much of the year, with the club focusing on smaller events and fundraisers where possible (such as the successful Trivia Night) while still allowing all members the opportunity to contribute in a variety of ways, and contribute they did. Nothing is too much trouble for members and that is what makes the club such a great club.

Rotarian David Anderson proposed a toast to Rotary International, reminding all present that the Rotary organisation has over 1.2 million members and 35,000+ clubs worldwide, and the good that can be achieved when people work together in peace and care for each other.

Rotary is a worldwide fellowship of clubs, all with the motto 'Service Above Self'. 9790 District Governor Bruce Anderson then responded to the toast.

Carol then had the pleasure of inducting Supattra Wannasubchae (Tippy) into the club.

Tippy has been a Rotarian in Thailand (including a year as President) and now that she is eligible, she has re-joined the fold and will be an asset to the Club, bringing with her a wealth of experience and loads of enthusiasm.

Three major presentations were made on the night. The first was the David Long Memorial Community Service Award, in honour of David Long, a dedicated member who passed away some 10 years ago. This award goes to a person who exemplifies the same loyal, tireless and committed service as shown by David over many years.

This year, the person chosen was Glenda Woods. Glenda is an active Rotarian who came up with the ideas during COVID of supplying 1000 masks to the Yea community for those in need.

Glenda also had the idea of Seniors in our community to receive a Christmas hamper in lieu of the Annual Senior Citizen Dinner.

Glenda holds the position of Public Image Director within the Club and as such is heavily involved in marketing of the events and projects of the club.

Glenda, though, is much more that a Rotarian. She is actively involved in the Yea Wetlands and the Visitor Information Centre and regularly volunteers her time to several other organisations.

The second was the presentation of several Paul Harris Fellows, in recognition of community service. For each Paul Harris Fellow awarded, the Club has donated $US1000 to the Rotary Foundation, Rotary's own charity, which supports good works throughout the world.

Carpenter and Ian Sichlau. Sue's was in recognition of her many years of service but especially for her support of the Rotary Student Exchange program. Sue has hosted 10 exchange students from many different countries and been a strong advocate for the program. Her daughter, Jess, was the first student the club sent overseas and was indeed the one of the reasons Sue joined Rotary.

Ian has been club secretary for several years and has provided many hours of support to many projects, using his architectural skills to great effect. His most recent efforts were to design the bathroom renovations so that Elle Gay could return home from a quad bike accident.

Both these Paul Harris Fellow recipients have done so much more than mentioned here and our communities are richer for their presence amongst us. Congratulations to each one of you.

The Club has managed in a difficult COVID year of restrictions and lockdowns and the like, to both raise and distribute considerable funds.

Those that have been distributed thus far have included the following: Rotary Foundation, $4025; Angel Flight - $1000; Cancer Council $1800; Australian Rotary Health - $2000; Disaster Aid Australia - $1000; Elle Gay House renovations - $4126; Interplast - $1500; Pioneer Reserve Project-$2500; School Bursaries $2200; St Luke Hampers - $1000; Senior Citizens Christmas Hampers - $1000; Tracy Ukosich Bike Ride for Multiple Sclerosis $9500.

Other smaller donations have also been made to a variety of causes throughout the year.

One of the Club's greatest support to local organisations is catering for the weekly Rotary dinner meetings. Several organisations and community groups take rostered turns to create beautiful two course meals.

These include Yea Golf Club, Yea Show Committee, Friends of Yea Wetlands, Yea Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, Yea Primary School, Flowerdale Primary School and Sacred Heart Primary School with others appearing on the roster on special occasions.

This is a win/win for all as Rotarians enjoy lovely meals each week, the community groups can actively fundraise, and the local shops and businesses do good custom. In 2020-21, caterers were only able to provide meals from January onwards, due to tight covid restrictions.

Despite this, over $10,000 was paid out to those groups. For some groups, it is their only form of fundraising.

The evening concluded with the induction of Paul Kellett as the Rotary Club of Yea President for 2021-22 by Past District Governor David Anderson. Paul will be a diligent and positive leader and is more than ready to take on the challenges of keeping the club growing and relevant in today's world, and with his new Board a mixture of experience and newbies, the club is in good hands for the next 12 months.

Paul thanked outgoing President Carol for her 12 months of service in such a challenging year with almost nothing being 'normal'. He then received the banner for the new Rotary year which has the theme for all Rotarians of ‘Serve to Change Lives’.

Local Sport Yea Junior Footy UNDER 9s It was a chilly start as we headed to Wandong for our first meet with the Wandong Warriors this season.

The cold didn’t curb the enthusiasm of our young Tigers who every week arrive with big smiles ready to go.

With strong numbers in both teams again this week, there were two matches played.

We were excited to welcome two Auskick players who joined us this week as part of the League’s Transition Round. It’s great to see our up and coming young Tigers play.

Thank you to Al who assisted the Coach again with running the games this week.

Next weekend we have a bye for the school holiday break.

- Belinda Johnston ★ UNDER13s As the official League Transition Round was cancelled the Yea Tigers Under 13s were more than happy to still accommodate Wandong and play their upcoming Under 13s (for next year) in a scratch match.

This suited all involved to give our footy loving kids a game. The Wandong Under 13 side haven't lost a game all season in their Under 11 competition so this was a timely opportunity to see what challenges are ahead for them next year.

As a club it was fantastic to see great sportsmanship from the Tigers by adjusting their game for their younger smaller opposition and varied positional changes by the coaches.

True Tiger spirit was also shown by a couple of Yea U15s players whose game was forfeited against Broadford so played in this match but for Wandong and were real leaders on the ground for their younger adopted teammates. Well done Tigers, you made the club proud.

Local People Leaders supported ■ Cr Damien Gallagher, Red Gate Ward representative for Murrindindi Council, told last week’s Shire meeting that the Murrindindi Youth Leadership Program is underway with a collaboration progressing to help youth leaders develop digital video stories with older members of the community.

“This project aims to promote social inclusion, highlight our local community groups, and foster intergenerational relationships within the community,” Cr Gallagher told the meeting on June 23.

Rebels take on Burras At Warburton

Budget approved

■ Murrindindi Shire Council adopted its Annual Budget 2021-22 at its scheduled meeting last Wednesday (June 23).

Council's Mayor Cr Sandice McAulay said the Budget for the coming financial year will help Council deliver the vision it is developing jointly with the community.

The Budget is also designed with a strong focus on post-pandemic community recovery in mind.

Cr McAulay said the 2021-22 Budget includes a number of highlights and important initiatives, including ■ $50.6 million to deliver services and improve infrastructure, including a $14.7 million Capital Works Program.

■ $25,000 for the development of a Reconciliation Action Plan to embed respect for indigenous culture and its history, to build relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people, communities and organisations, and to develop opportunities to work together in partnership and understanding for a better and more inclusive community for all.

■ $80,000 for the development of environmental programs and mitigating the effects of climate change.

■ $50,000 to review and address the ongoing maintenance challenges of Council's built and environmental assets, including ageing infrastructure, roads, recreation and open spaces and to support the review of the Road Asset Management Plan.

■ More than $100,000 in funding from Council's reserves for a range of tourism and business development initiatives.

Cr McAulay said that there were a number of key measures which underpin this Budget. These are ■ An average rate increase of 1.5 per cent which is in line with the average rate increase allowable under the Victorian Government's Fair Go Rates System for 2021-22. The Council has also reinstated the 25 per cent rate premium for commercial and industrial properties, which it waived last financial year due to the impacts of the pandemic.

■ A limit of 1.5 per cent increase on those fees and charges within Council's control.

■ No new debt (noting Council paid off all loan debt in the 2020-21 financial year).

“I'd like to thank everyone who made submissions to Council about the draft Budget earlier this year. We received a total of 10 submissions, which were of a very high quality,” Cr McAulay said.

“The majority of submissions were in relation to environmental initiatives and ideas.

It's great to know that we're heading in the right direction by focusing resources in this area.

“Community submissions help us to understand if we've got the Budget right and whether it will meet community needs.

“Finally, I'd like to add that this is the first budget set by the current Council and we believe it is a great first step on our four-year journey.

“I'm also excited to be working together with our community to finalise a renewed community vision and create a new Council Plan and Financial Plan.

“These documents will be instrumental in establishing the priorities of our communities, which will be reflected in our work plans and budgets over the next four years,” Cr McAulay said.

Restrained to settle four back in the moving line from gate five with poleliner Aerodyne Guy leading, Clarenden Envoy after following Outside Fighter ahead of him forward in the final circuit finished brilliantly out wide to score by 1.1 metres from Outside Fighter, with Markleigh Caz another local third a half head away after trailing the pacemaker and using the sprint lane.

Long way out ■ Mitchell Park (Ballarat) trainer Kelvin Barker landed the Pridgeon Automotive Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres with ex-Kiwi and Queenslander You Really Got Me in a mile rate of 2-01.2. A 5Y0 Love You-Rondo gelding, You Really Got Me having his third start for the stable and third since December last year was trapped four wide from outside the front line before going forward with Chris Alford in the sulky to assume control from Do Ya Wanna Donna after travelling a short distance.

The laundromat is a sanctuary, an escape from the outside world, a welcomed mundane. It’s a place to disconnect from daily life when focusing on the hum of the wash and the tumble of the dry. Until a stranger enters that safe haven … and begins to ask questions … and takes it upon themselves to break the ‘cycle’.

■ Anna by Lamplight, written by Alison Knight, directed by Jane Carter. Set in Berlin, November 1938, two days after Kristallnacht. A dangerous time to be a Jew. A life member of Peridot Theatre, playwright Alison Knight has served on the Board of Management for 12 years, including President for six of those years, and stepped down from this role at the company's Annual General Meeting last month to devote more time to her writing and other projects.

The Door In Question ■ Shortcut Creative presents a new psychological cross-reality adventure - The Door in Question - a multi-sensory virtual reality immersive theatre production from August 4 - 8 at the MC Showroom, Prahran.

Audience members will be placed at the centre of an illusory world that calls into question the very nature of their own perception.They will put on a Virtual-Reality headset and talk to AI to enter the experience.

The narrative of this experience aims to destigmatise the often taboo subject of living with mental illness.

Education via the experience is becoming part of the VR community and The Door In Question is using VR for change.

The show was developed in conjunction with UNSW, RMIT, Australian Council of the Arts, Creative Victoria, City of Melbourne and City of Stonnington, and is about dismantling and understanding mental illness through exciting new cross reality technologies.

The show is limited as only four people can join the narrative at one time.

● Melanie Hillman ■ Melbourne chamber music group The Parlour has a fascinating publicity line - if you really want to know what a composer was like, ask his landlord, his housekeeper or his ex-wife.

In the usual format of a hybrid performance of song, recital and semi-staged play, The Parlour is staging Fantastique! The Life and Loves of Hector Berlioz, with actor Melanie Hillman portraying Berlioz's opera singer second wife, Marie Recio.

As The Parlour takes you through Berlioz's life, as seen by Marie, singers mezzo-soprano Karen van Spall and baritone Adam Miller will perform songs by Berlioz, accompanied at the piano by Coady Green.

The show is happening at forty-five downstairs, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, on Tuesday July 13 and Wednesday July 14 at 7.30 pm. There is a live streamed performance on July 14 - Bastille Day. It's a wealth of classical performances all week at forty-five downstairs.

Thursday and Friday, July 15-16 features Duo Ecclettico, pianist Coady Green and saxophonist Justin Kenealy with a program of contemporary Australian composers. The duo will be performing Jane Hammond's Songs from The Box and Swamp, and Ross Edwards's Full Moon Dances.

To conclude this mini-festival, on Saturday- Sunday, July, 17-18, there will be a special concert entitled Two Pianos, Eight Hands, featuring pianists Tristan Lee, Gina Gataveckaite, Christopher Smith and Coady Green, in a virtuosic program for four pianists on two grand pianos.

Three Summers

■ A new arrival in Melbourne, the drama/comedy movie Three Summers transports cinemagoers to tropical Brazil, using English subtitles.

Co-written by Iana Cossoy Paro and Sandra Kogut, Three Summers takes place over three contrasting Christmases between 2015 and 2017.

Disparity between Brazilian social classes is evident as we share the lives of optimistic, resourceful housekeeper Madá (Regina Casé) and staff when serving and negotiating with their wealthy employers in a luxurious condominium.

Corruption and Brazil's real-life Operation Car Wash, resulting in hundreds of arrests in 2014, also feature. Police arrive with a search warrant, and Madá's rich employers Edgar (Otávio Müller) and Marta (Gisele Fróes) disappear, implicated in a corruption and money laundering scandal.

This upperclass downfall leaves Madá and her fellow staff without wages, but in a charming twist, Kogut and Paro empower these underdog characters with strength and determined resourcefulness to emerge as the winners.

Deft direction by Sandra Kogut sustains visual interest, but sudden cuts between scenes seem disjointed and the pace drags at times.

References throughout the movie to modernday technology entrenches Three Summers as a

movie for its time.

Both social classes use mobile phones and Skype, the internet, security cameras, videos, emails, voice mail, Instagram and Facebook are all included.

Even Edgar's elderly father Lira (Rogerio Froés) living in the guest room, talks of editing photographs in a modern camera.

A special treat in this movie is the skilled, standout performance from Brazilian actor Regina Casé as irrepressible Madá, who eventually reveals the heartbreaking story behind her joyful persona.

Although not recognising comedic aspects of this drama/comedy, I found the narrative, colourful characters and glimpses of life in contemporary Brazil offer an enlightening experience.

Three Summers pays tribute to the strength and resilience of those deemed to be lower class, and opens a window into the lavish lifestyles of upper class Brazilians.

The movie also proves that regardless of class, life can change dramatically when things go wrong.

What’s On Them ■ Arts Centre Melbourne in partnership with Critical Stages Touring present Them by Samah Sabawi and directed by Bagryana Popov in the Fairfax Studio from July 28 31.

Based on real life stories of people displaced by conflict, Them follows one young family as they face the decision whether to flee their war-torn city.

Omar, Leila and their young child are counting down the days. Their friends enjoy fantasies of escape and the arrival of Omar’s sister brings a real chance to get out – but at what cost?

Developed in consultation with people living in conflict zones and displaced by war, the play was first supported by Melbourne Theatre Company before enjoying a sell-out extended season at La Mama Theatre.

“Them is a tragicomedy about love, honour and sacrifice in times of violence and war. It follows the lives of five young people and explores the impossible decisions they have to make in the days before a refugee boat sails from their shores to Europe,” says Samah Sabawi.

“I wrote the first draft for this play in a hotel room in Finland 2015. At the time, there were protests in the streets of Helsinki by members of the far right - who took the opportunity of marking Finland’s national day to demand tighter immigration measures against what they viewed as the wave of invasion of asylum seekers into their country.”

Seeking refuge and coming to terms with the effects of displacement is a subject deeply relavent to Sabawi as the award-winning Palestinian playwright and her family were exiled in the aftermath of the Six Day War in 1967.

Her experience connects her with the rest of the cast who hail from a range of countries that have been affected by political turmoil.

The ensemble features Osamah Sami, Taj Aldeeb, Mehran Tajbakhsh, Claudia Greenstone, Nahed Elrayes and Adeeb Razzouk.

“I sat down and started imagining what life would have been like for the asylum seekers before they boarded the boats.

“I was already familiar with the impact of war on ordinary people, especially on women and children in Palestine and in Syria, but when I started writing, my characters refused to be bound to a specific region," said Sabawi.

■ Kommotion was a fast-paced teenage Top 40 pop show that started back in August 1964 hosted by 3UZ disc jockey Ken Sparkes.

The cast included Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, Chantal Cantouri, Grant Rule, Tony Healey, Denise Drysdale, David Bland, Alex Rappel, Jillian Fitzgerald and many more.

It was the forerunner to Uptight hosted by Ross D. Wyllie and Happening 70, all on ATV-0 out at Nunawading.

Less likely to get virus ■ Vegetarians are missing out on more than just meat and it's a good thing. Researchers have revealed a link between diet and COVID-19 which showed plant-based eaters were 73 per cent less likely to come down with the virus compared to those who include animals in their diet.

Meanwhile, pescatarians, whose primary protein source is fish, were at a 59 per cent lower risk.

The new study, published in The BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health, based these findings on a self-reported questionnaire submitted by a total of 2884 individuals, all healthcare workers, from six European countries, 568 of which had had confirmed cases of the coronavirus during the previous year.

Among those cases, 138 said they suffered moderate to severe symptoms, while the remaining 430 experienced mild effects of the respiratory illness.

Block your ex

■ Ever embarrassingly come across a colleague or, gulp, an ex on Tinder and think to yourself while shaking your head: "Did that really just happen?"

This week, the popular dating app is fixing that. Tinder is introducing a new feature called Block Contacts that will allow users to avoid awkward encounters with exes, cousins, bosses or just about anyone they would rather not see or be seen by.

The new feature will allow users to block any or all of their phone contacts within the app.

"We may not be able to save you from awkward run-ins at the coffee shop, but we are giving you more control over your experience on Tinder," said Bernadette Morgan, the company's group product manager for trust and safety.

"We're rolling out Block Contacts as an additional resource, empowering members with peace of mind by helping create a worry-free space for them to spark new connections.”

Passengers too fat

■ Passengers keep getting bigger. Now airlines must account more accurately for that. The Federal Aviation Administration is requiring updates to passenger and baggage weight estimates that airlines use to keep each flight within airplane safety limits.

Each US airline had to submit a plan by June 12 explaining which average weights for passengers and baggage they'll use, down to phones and clothing, and how they estimated those weights.

The FAA must approve each airline's plan. Airline officials say the weight estimates used for passengers and baggage are going up between 5 per cent and 10 per cent. That will affect some flights, possibly requiring that more passengers get bumped or more baggage left behind. Impact is likelier on unusually hot days and in cities higher above sea level, when the weight an airplane can safely carry is reduced because wings won't generate as much lift. Flights into stiff headwinds that require more fuel also may face more weight issues.

■ Over the past 18 months, 29 prisoners have escaped from federal lockups across the US. and nearly half still have not been caught. At some of the institutions, doors are left unlocked, security cameras are broken and officials sometimes don't notice an inmate is missing for hours. At one Texas lockup, security is so lax that local law enforcement officials privately joke about its seemingly "open-door policy." Prisoners have broken out at lockups in nearly every region of the country. Twelve of the inmates who escaped in 2020 from prisons in Florida, California, Louisiana, Texas, and Colorado remain at large. Two others who escaped since January this year have also not yet been caught. Their crimes include racketeering, wire fraud, bank robbery, possession of methamphetamine, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and other drugs.

■ Dissident members of the original 10 Black Lives Matter chapters are demanding more accountability and transparency from the BLM Global Network in the wake of revelations about co-founder Patrisse Cullors' lavish spending.

Cullors announced she would resign from her post as executive director of the organisation in late May, amid controversy over the group's finances. She's been in the spotlight for lavish spending on real estate., including a $1.4 million LA home she encircled with a $35,000 electric fence. BLM10Plus, comprised of the original 10 Black Lives Matter chapters and some of BLM's newer chapters, repeated calls Friday for the BLM Global Network's leadership, to open the books about the structure of the sprawling organisation.

In a statement, it said the public should know about how many chapters there are, how the various legal entities under the Global Network are related to each other, the salaries of staff members and the founders, deals with contractors and more. "The little we do know, has come from persistent requests for transparency over the years," said the statement, which is titled, "Tell No Lies." It described tangled negotiations involving where official chapters were located and which ones got funding.

Drinking too much ■ Americans tend to drink in more dysfunctional ways than people in other societies, only to become judgmental about nearly any drinking at all.

Again, and again, an era of overindulgence begets an era of renunciation: Binge, abstain. Binge, abstain. Right now, we are lurching into another of our periodic crises over drinking, and both tendencies are on display at once.

Since the turn of the millennium, alcohol consumption has risen steadily, in a reversal of its long decline throughout the 1980s and 90s. Before the pandemic, some aspects of this shift seemed sort of fun, as long as you didn't think about them too hard.

In the 20th century, you might have been able to buy wine at the supermarket, but you couldn't drink it in the supermarket. Now some grocery stores have wine bars, beer on tap, signs inviting you to "shop 'n' sip," and carts with cup holders.

Even before COVID-19 arrived on our shores, the consequences of all this were catching up with us. From 1999 to 2017, the number of alcohol-related deaths in the US. doubled, to more than 70,000 a year, making alcohol one of the leading drivers of the decline in American life expectancy.

These numbers are likely to get worse: During the pandemic, frequency of drinking rose, as did sales of hard liquor.

By this February, nearly a quarter of Americans said they'd drunk more over the past year as a means of coping with stress. Explaining these trends is hard; they defy so many recent expectations. Not long ago, Millennials were touted as the driest generation they didn't drink much as teenagers, they were "sober curious," they were so admirably focused on being well and yet here they are day-drinking White Claw and dying of cirrhosis at record rates.

Nor does any of this appear to be an inevitable response to 21st-century life: Other countries with deeply entrenched drinking problems, among them Britain and Russia, have seen alcohol use drop in recent years.

Magazine ■ Ethel Merman made her debut on Broadway in the stage musical Girl Crazy in 1930 at the age of 22.

She never had a singing lesson in her life, never had a major hit song and although Ethel made several films, she was not regarded as a major film star – so why was Ethel Merman so popular?

I guess it was because she had star quality and was a showbusiness ‘legend’ in every sense of the word.

Ethel Agnes Zimmermann was born in Astoria, Queens in New York City in 1908. After graduating from High School, Ethel worked as a stenographer and then started singing in New York nightclubs. In 1924 she changed her name to Ethel Merman.

At this time she met Jimmy Durante and they became lifelong friends. During a season at The Palace in 1930 Ethel was invited to audition for the role of Kate Fothergill in the new George and Ira Gershwin musical Girl Crazy.

She got the role and this was a turning point in her career. Ethel got standing ovations when she sang the song I Got Rhythm holding a high C note for 16 bars.

Ethel Merman was signed to a film contract with Warner Brothers Studios and her first onscreen appearance was in Follow The Leader playing opposite Ed Wynn and Ginger Rogers.

In 1946 she played Annie Oakley in the stage musical Annie Get Your Gun which ran for 1147 performances at The Imperial Theatre on Broadway.

Ethel was not cast in the film version and when Judy Garland dropped out due to illness Betty Hutton was cast in the role of Annie Oakley. In 1950 Ethel played the lead role in Call Me Madam on Broadway and won the Tony award for her performance.

This time she was cast in the film version playing opposite Donald O’Connor, Vera Allen and George Sanders. In 1954 she starred in one of my favourite films There’s No Business Like

● Ethel Merman Showbusiness and her co stars included Donald O’Connor, Dan Dailey, Mitzi Gaynor and Marilyn Monroe. Ethel continued to dominate Broadway and created the role of Mama Rose in Gypsy in 1959.

A friend of mine slipped into a matinee of Gypsy and sat in the end seat in the back row ofthe theatre. As the lights dimmed he was vaguely aware of this woman in the darkness standing beside him in the isle.

Then the marvellous Miss Merman let go at the top of her voice with “Sing out Louise!” and my friend nearly went through the roof.

I thought Ethel was wonderful in the film It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World as the “mother from hell.”

Dorothy Provine, who played her daughter in the film, once told me that she was a “formidable lady.”

In the early 1960s Ethel came to Australia to do television work and performed at venues such as Chequers Nightclub in Sydney.

Ethel was married four times and had two children. Her marriage to Ernest Borgnine in 1964 lasted for a month and in her autobiography Ethel devoted a chapter to the marriage in the form of a blank page.

Her final on-screen performance was in the comedy Flying High in 1980. Ethel Merman passed away on the February 15, 1984.

She had the nickname of ‘leather lungs’ but there is no doubt that Ethel Merman was a marvellous singer and a true showbusiness legend – sadly missed.

Phillip Edwards presents haunting, ethereal images that echo the sentiment of early Australian landscape artists who infused a sense of melancholy with the sublime contrast; Alexandra Sasse's suburban motifs find poetry in the pragmatic-built environment.

Sasse is a recent finalist in two of Australia's most prestigious landscapes awards, the John Leslie Art Prize and the Lloyd Rees Art Prize.

Houseman Galleries Reopening: Following theclosure in the recent lockdown the Housemuseum Galleries reopened to the public from June 23.

The new opening hours are Wednesdays to Sundays 11am-4pm.

The gallery is delighted to re-open with an exhibition of works by John Nixon (1949-2020) one of Australia's most celebrated and influential figures in abstract and non-objective art.

Displaying over 45 works from the Lyon Collection, the exhibition presents key aspects of Nixon's 59 year practice.

In I Live Across the Road from the Future, artist Drasko Boljevic changes the walls and pavement of our Melbourne laneways and for the Dark Horse experiment canvas brings us new 3D stencil works.

As the name implies the content involves the trouble and expense people go to, to enhance their body image by cosmetic surgery. Content is provocative and sure to make people think twice before undertaking procedures.

Gone missing ■ Weather presenter on Channel 9 and 3AW, Livinia Nixon has taken long service leave and has plans to take her boys on school holidays once such memories are allowable. While Livinia is enjoying good times Madeleine Slattery will fill-in on Channel 9.

Sinatra croons jingle ■ Frank Sinatra and John F. Kennedy were good mates leading up to the 1960 elections in America. Frank agreed to High Hopes being used in a version to be used in Kennedy's election campaign.

For memory's sake the version can be heard on YouTube, it's worth hearing. Going through the right channels to use someone else's music is in contrast to Clive Palmer’s recent rip-off that cost him $1.5 million in damages.

Super Supra sold ■ The 1994 Toyota Supra featured in Fast and Furious films went on the auction block in LA. An anonymous buyer, by telephone, picked up the Toyota for a cool $550,000 .

Stars: *** Review: Mysterious and wild-eyed, a new security guard for a cash truck company surprises his co-workers when he unleashes precision skills during a heist, but the crew is left wondering who he is and where he came from, and soon, the marksman's ultimate motive becomes clear as he takes dramatic and irrevocable steps to settle a score.

Following on from his 2019 hit crime-caper "The Gentlemen," "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," "Snatch" and "RocknRolla" writerdirector Guy Ritchie jumps the pond to the U.S. into his familiar crime territory, and this latest effort is an action-crime-drama that is a cool, tough, stylish, violent and wildly irresistible thrill ride!

The stand-out cast all at the top of their game includes Jason Statham as the mysterious, no-nonsense security guard, "Mindhunter" star Holt McCallany as his sidekick, Josh Hartnett as a fellow rookie security guard, Scott Eastwood in an impressive turn as a villain, Guy Ritchie stalwart Eddie Marsan as the company manager and Andy Garcia as a mysterious law enforcement agent, all combine to create a number of colourful characters that that bring "Wrath of Man" to vivid life.

But the unseen star here is writer-director Guy Ritchie, back again with all his wonderfully unique and distinctively acid-tongued ingredients, a tightly wound, fully loaded, double-barrelled blast that grips with a firm hold, and even though it lacks some of the "Guns, Geezers and G'Nors" humour of the aforementioned films, this is a nonetheless a compelling, darkly wicked and ferociously exhilarating ride!"

MY SALINGER YEAR (Streaming on Google Play, AppleTV & Prime Video): Genre: Drama.

Length: 101 Minutes.

Stars: * * * Review: A college grad takes a clerical job in mid '90s New York city working for the literary agent of the renowned and notoriously reclusive writer J.D. Salinger, author of, among others, the literary classic "The Catcher in the Rye" (1951).

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Joanna Smith Rakoff, this quirky, light-hearted and engaging effort from writer-director Philippe Falardeau is structurally and emotionally flawed throughout, however, as the literary world is a difficult topic to transfer to the screen at the best of times, this antithesis of the more action and thriller fare on offer on screens, by way of the style and pacing of Woody Allen, with a touch of Terry Gilliam's "The Fisher King" (1991) and 2006's "The Devil Wears Prada," succeeds for the most part as an mildly entertaining history lesson.

Margaret Qualley (Fosse/Verdon) as the young clerical assistant at the literary agency, Joanna, gives an effective performance as she fumbles her way around the her new found surroundings, with aspirations of becoming a writer herself, however, it is veteran Sigourney Weaver as her demanding boss that elevates this to a whole new level of drama and emotion, even empathy, with a tightly commanding screen presence for every moment of her screen time, and is aided by a splendid supporting cast that includes Douglas Booth and veteran character Colm Feore (Chicago, Thor).

This may not be up there with other literary translation stories such as 2005's "Capote" or 2013's "The Great Gatsby," but where this does succeed is in introducing, or re-introducing depending on your age, to the mysterious and powerfully enigmatic author J.D. Salinger, and his work, most notably the hugely influential "The Catcher in The Rye," considered one of the great literary masterpieces of the 20th Century, and therefore, for this reason, along with another turn-out performance by Sigourney Weaver, this will cause much discussion and a visit to your local bookshop long after the credits have rolled.

Rourke’s Reviews Rurouni Kenshin: The Final ■ (MA). 138 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

This hugely successful series comes to an end with two new films, the first of which, rather ironically, is called The Final (the closing entry is entitled The Beginning), and has sadly gone to Netflix instead of cinemas.

Like its predecessors, this is fine entertainment on a grand scale, where considerable effort in all areas has ensured that fans of the films will walk away satisfied.

The Final is set in 1879, 12 years after the events that occurred in Part 3, and the new system of government which has been put in place. Kenshin Himura (Takeru Satoh), also known to many as feared killer Hitokiri Battosai, continues his quest of wanting to live a peaceful life.

Also returning are those who are close to him; Kaoru (Emi Takei), who still has feelings for Kenshin; teenage Yahiko (Riku Ohnishi); Sanosuke (Munetaka Aoki); and Megumi (Yu Aoi).

Other familiar faces include resistance agents Aoshi (Yusuke Iseya) and Misao (Tao Tsuchiya), and police officer Goro Fujita (Yosuke Eguchi).

The main villain this time is Enishi Yukishiro (Mackenyu Arata, son of the legendary Sonny Chiba), a Japanese villager who left his homeland for Shanghai, and after rising to the top of the Chinese Mafia, returns home to wreak havoc, specifically targeting everyone around Kenshin, as he wants to make the skilled swordsman suffer for a sin committed years before, involving his sister Tomoe (Kasumi Arimura).

Enishi is backed by some fearsome fighters, and before long destruction and death lie in their wake.

Kenshin must face Enishi in an effort to stop all the carnage being inflicted on those he cares about.

The film-makers really have taken each of the live-action Kenshin movies (the first three are available on DVD and blu-ray) to a higher level, and the results are clear to see.

Manga purists will complain about certain character and story arcs being overly condensed or dropped (it probably helps that I haven't read the source material), but as a film, this is first-rate work, and is a genuine cut above most big screen manga adaptations.

Director Keishi Ohtomo, who has helmed all the Kenshin features, has provided career best work throughout this series, and

teaming up with veteran action director Kenji Tanigaki (who worked in Hong Kong with stars like Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen), the committed cast members, numerous stunt people, and a gifted technical crew, provides some of the most eye-popping action set-pieces ever put on screen, made all the more impressive by the minimal (or sometimes even zero) use of CGI. As with the previous films, especially two and three, the wire work is exceptionally well-used. I can't wait for Rurouni Kenshin The Beginning, which should hit Netflix later this year.

I'm really hoping that all five films will screen at the Japanese Film Festival, as the big screen is where these wonderful films should be seen and experienced.

RATING - ****

Luca ■ (PG). 95 minutes. Now streaming on Disney+.

Beautifully animated but disappointingly formulaic and predictable film from the Disney/Pixar studio, with a script that offers no surprises or engaging characters.

The story centres on Luca (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), a teenage sea monster who lives with his protective parents (Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan).

Warned not to go to the surface and interact with people, Luca of course does the opposite, and sees that he transforms into human form when on land.

Meeting fellow sea creature Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer), the two become friends with young Giulia (Emma Berman), and team up to participate in a local triathlon, where the winner will receive a Vespa.

While there are some humorous moments scattered about, there is a noticeable lack of inspiration, with characters that are decidedly bland.

For a much better viewing experience, watch Ponyo (2008).

Xtreme ■ (MA). 111 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Slick, often brutal action film from Spain feels inspired by films such as John Wick and Payback, while also harking back to the harder-edged action outings of the 1980's. The plot is simple; Stepbrothers Maximo (Teo Garcia) and Lucero (Oscar Jaenada) fall out big time when Lucero murders their crime boss father and takes over his lucrative business. Maximo and his sister Maria (Andrea Duro) are betrayed, but escape the clutches of henchmen Finito (Sergio PerisMencheta).

Concerns for horses from overseas ■ Some overseas trainers are a bit concerned over the new Scintigraphy system for checking horses arriving for our racing carnivals. That is causing a bit of confusion in some quarters.

Officials are attempting to allay fears by European trainers that the nuclear imaging technique is too intrusive, and will see their horses out of work for an unsustainable period of time.

Top international trainer, Aidan O'Brien, has said that under the current rules he wouldn't send horses to Melbourne.

He stated that he felt that very few horses would pass the controversial scan, required to enter.

O'Brien said: "It's a nuclear scan, to have to inject dye into their system, and then they have to stay in a closed box for four days for this nuclear thing to work".

But Racing Victoria's General Manager of Veterinary services, Grace Forbes, has rebutted the claims, saying a horse could be scanned with minimal impact to its training regime.

"Scintigraphy is a type of nuclear medicine, and it is a common diagnostic imaging technique that is used in both humans and in veterinary medicine internationally".

Ms Forbes said she been in discussions with some of the Irish vets that have been able to have clinics that provide these services.

"They have been able to assure me that similar as it is here in Victoria, where a horse is undergoing cautionary scintigraphy.

"The horses can work up to, and on the morning of presenting, to the clinic."

Forbes said that Racing Victoria would determine if Japanese horses needed to be scanned in Australia once they arrived.

The situation looks interesting with the time ticking away to the big Carnivals.

Peter Van, formerly with Magioc 1278, journeyed from Ballarat, for the day, while another of the golden voices of yesteryear, Paul Konik, who worked for the ABC, looked well.

Big step ■ News that Racing Victoria and the University have reached an agreement to provide oncall emergency veterinary services all yearround has met with large approval from all those in the racing industry.

The U-Vet Werribee Equine Centre previously provided services at locations such as the Werribee Quarantine Centre, during the Spring and Autumn Racing Carnivals.

U-Vet will now provide a 24-hour emergency on-call service for serious leg injuries and fractures, sustained during both training and racing.

The agreement also extends to horses injured at private training facilities.

U-Vet's services include advanced diagnostic imaging and lameness investigation, with equipment such as the standing CT Scanner.

"U-Vet's year-round on-call emergency service for thoroughbred horses should they sustain a serious injury during racing or training will be available".

Racing Victoria's Chief Executive, Giles Thompson, said: “It is a most important Welfare outcome".

And so say all of us in the racing industry.

■ I was sorry to hear the news that leading South Australian trainer, Leon McDonald, suffered a fractured hip in a track work accident at Morphettville.

The Group One winning trainer was knocked off balance, when one of his stable horses, Pearl Bandit, slid into him after finishing track work.

X-rays showed that he suffered a fracture in his hip, that would require surgery.

Mc Donald, with his co-trainer, Andrew Gluyas, has been a mainstay in South Australian racing ranks for more than 45 years.

They won the 2011 Caulfield Cup, with the good mare, Southern Speed, and have the top galloper, Dalsan, in their team.

We wish Leon, who I have known for many years, all the very best from all in racing.

Great effort ■ Young RSN racecaller Brendan Delaney capped off a big day with every calller’s dream.

He tipped all seven winners on top at the Ballarat meeting, including two or three at double figure odds from his first selections.
