Dan attack backfires

■ The State Opposition’s questioning about Premier Dan Andrews’s serious injuries at a Sorrento beach house, gloriously backfired last week.

Shadow Treasurer Louise Staley called for answers to enquiries about matters including the Premier’s ambulance ride to Peninsula Private Hospital.

The Government outplayed the LiberalNational’s bid to make political capital out of the social media rumours that the Premier had been involved in a fight.

The Opposition’s episode looked a little like a Looney Tune where Marvin The Martian asks: “Where’s the Ka-Boom?”

Low road for Lou ■ Shaun Carney, Age columnist, says the “opposition took the low road, tempted by an opportunity it didn’t need to take”.

Rohan Smith, at news.com.au, said a theory on social media was that Mr Andrews instead must have fallen on stairs while drinking with close friend, trucking tycoon Lindsay Fox. 3AW commentator Neil Mitchell said he had spoken to Lindsay Fox who told him the pair hadn’t spoken for months.

Other pundits recalled that Ms Staley was previously convicted of drink driving in 2000 with a blood alcohol content of twice the legal limit.

One columnist indicated that the Ka-Boom might come in the form of defamation proceedings from Mr Andrews.

Honour for Glenyys

■ State Parliament identity Glenyys Romanes was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours on Monday (June 14).

Ms Romanes, a former MLC for Melbourne province, now has the AM postnominal in recognition of her service.

Amongst her many community service achievements, she started as a Councillor on Brunswick (Moreland) City Council.

Challenge in July

■ Liberal Party President Robert Clark will face a challenge at the State Conference to be held on July 24-25. The event was originally scheduled for June 5 but could not go ahead because of COVID-19 lockdown rules.

The ‘Labour’ Party ■ “Women are being forced to labour in public waiting rooms and give birth in emergency cubicles,” according to Ellen Sandell, Melbourne MLA (Greens).

Ms Sandell told Parliament last week: “They are waiting days for urgent inductions and they are being sent home too early, resulting in increased rates of mastitis and infection.

“Midwives are regularly working 18-hour shifts without a break. My question is: what is the government going to do to fix this crisis, particularly at the Royal Women’s, in the short term and not just in a few years?”

Media declines

■ Jacinta Allan, State Government Minister, spoke in State Parliament about the decline of regional media, but didn’t refer to the decline of current advertising from her Govermont to media outlets.

“Wwe are witnessing the ongoing, sad decline of regional media newsrooms. This is ironic given we are in an era where there is more content than ever before that is accessible. There is more information available than ever before, but our regional newsrooms are declining. We have seen in recent times that Channel 9 regional has wound back their operations.”

Local Briefs 1402 respond

■ Some 1402 people in the Indi electorate have responded to MHR Helen Haines’s call to participate in a Federal Budget survey.

“After the Federal Budget was handed down on May 11, I ran a survey to hear what the people of Indi think about new funding announcements, and if it would make a difference to their lives,” Dr Haines said.

“The overall feedback was clear. Big budget announcements mean nothing until there is real change on the ground that people can see,” Dr Haines said.

Highway shut ■ Maroondah Hwy was closed between Healesville and Narbethong for an extended time late last week after extensive storm damage.

Marysville SES attended at a number of sites were trees had fallen across the roadway. There were a number of incidents particularly between Fernshaw and Dom Dom Saddle.

Trail Towns on TV ■ The Great Victorian Rail Trail and some of the ‘trail towns’ along it, was featured on SBS-TV last Saturday (June 12).

The coverage was in an episode of a new six-part series called Trail Towns.

Hosted by cycling icons Paul Van Der Ploeg (Vandy) and Dieter Kahsnitz (Deetz), Trail Towns is a series dedicated to encouraging more families, couples and friends to visit more cities, towns and regions for a bicycle holiday.

Murrindindi Council worked with the team at Trail Towns, alongside Mansfield and Mitchell Shire Councils, to feature the GVRT ride as well as some of the respective ‘trail towns’ along the way.

C’mas Hills query ■ State Planning Minister Richard Wynne was last week questioned by Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish: “Will the minister actively work to ensure that the outdoor area adjoining the Christmas Hills Mechanics Institute Hall - the tennis courts, the playground, the picnic area and the landscaped area - is retained for community use rather than being sold off by Melbourne Water?

“This small community is extremely concerned that the space that the volunteer hall management committee have spent 10 years enhancing and maintaining through a 10-year lease agreement with Melbourne Water will be sold off to the highest bidder.

“The hall committee will not be in a position to purchase. I acknowledge the complexity involved in the matter, the fact that the land in question falls across two titles and that Melbourne Water are looking to offload considerable land, but I appeal to the minister to intervene and provide the community with the outcome they so desperately need,” Ms McLeish said.

Medal for Mark Hesse ■ Former Seymour-Kilmore-Nagambie policeman, Sen. Sgt. Mark Hesse, has been awarded the Australian Police Medal in this week’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.

He was upgraded from Sergeant at Kilmore to be the first (and, to date, the only) Murrindindi Senior Sergeant in 2009.

At Murrindindi he worked with the community and Police officers under his command who were recovering from the aftermath of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires and was promoted to the rank of Senior Sergeant in 2010.

As the Municipal Emergency Response Coordinator he strengthened partnerships with agencies and police specialists including DELWP and the CFA, VICPOL Search and Rescue Squad and volunteer Bush Search and Rescue, Agriculture Victoria, the Game Management Authority, and with the Shire of Murrindindi.

The citation for his award reads: “Senior Sergeant Hesse has demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication to VICPOL, and to the communities in which he has served, throughout his more than 34 years of exemplary service.” Sen. Sgt Mark Hesse joined Victoria Police in 1982

■ The next meeting of Murrindindi Shire Council is due to be held at 6pm on Wednesday 2(June 23) at the Yea chambers.

Re-open regional gyms: MP ■ The Andrews Labor Government needs to immediately allow the re-opening of regional Victorian gymnasiums and dance studios, says wendy Lovell, Northern Victorian MLC. Speaking during the adjournment debate in State Parliament on Tuesday last week, Ms Lovell said that the easing of restrictions in regional Victoria from the current lockdown did not go far enough.

Ms Lovell asked Acting Premier James Merlino to immediately lift the restrictions on gyms and dance studios in country areas which are again facing financial devastation.

Ms Lovell said she had been contacted by many owners of local gyms and dance studios which are once again doing it tough despite not a single positive COVID case being recorded in regional Victoria dur-

Local Briefs Dindi meeting

■ Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision which occurred in Sugarloaf Creek last Wednesday afternoon (June 9).

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Sugarloaf Creek Rd and Seymour-Pyalong Rd about 4.20pm after reports two cars had collided.

The driver of one of the cars, believed to be a man in his 50s, died at the scene.

The other driver, a woman in her 20s, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision had not been determined and investigations are ongoing.

New CEO signs on ■ Murrindindi Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer Livia Bonazzi commenced work in her appointment last Wednesday (June 9).

Ms Bonazzi sat in on the unscheduled Council meeting held by ‘Zoom’ teleconferencing that evening.

5000 kg collected ■ Alexandra Football Netball Club has collected more than 5000 kilograms of alumnimum cans for recycling since the program began in late 2016.

Key aim of the project is to reduce the amount of material going into landfill as well as providing some income for the Club.

The project is ongoing, organized by Ray ‘Fox’ Chanter, Richard Jack and Ray Steyger, assisted by Michael Harper.

Dog park upgrade ■ The dog off-leash area at Lyndarum Wetlands (Epping North) is getting an upgrade.

“We’ll be improving the grass, laying gravel surfaces for high-use areas, adding a fenced quiet-dog zone, planting garden beds and installing more seats,” said a City of Whittlesea representative.

“The dog off-leash park will be closed from late-June during the upgrade, but will be back up-and-running in August, looking better than ever.”

Honour for Lesley

■ Lesley Gay Read of Seymour was named as a recipient of the Australian Fire Service Medal this week.

She has been a CFA volunteer firefighter, serving the Hilldene brigade for more than 18 years. She has been the District 12 Peer Team co-ordinator, providing psychological first aid to operational members.

“Ms Read’s outstanding dedication and concern for the welfare of all members of the CFA is of the highest order,” notes the honour citation.

■ Two new sites in North Geelong and others in Bundoora, Epping, Reservoir, Southbank and Thomastown were added to the list of potential exposure sites.

Most are Tier two sites requiring people to isolate, get tested and remain in isolation until they receive a negative test result.

There has been a detection of viral fragments of COVID-19 in a wastewater sample taken on June 10 from the sewer catchment serving a population of about 33,000 persons in the north-eastern suburbs.

T his new detection is of interest as there are currently no confirmed COVID-19 cases in that area but multiple exposure sites in and near the catchment.

The unexpected detections may be due to someone who has had COVID-19 but is no longer infectious continuing to ‘shed’ the virus, or it may be due to an active but undiagnosed infectious case.

Residents of and visitors between June 9-10 to the suburbs of Balwyn North, Bulleen, Bundoora, Eaglemont, Heidelberg, Heidelberg Heights, Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East, Kew East, Macleod, Rosanna, Viewbank, Watsonia and Yallambie are urged to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested if any develop.

The wastewater testing program is designed as an early warning system and a cautious approach is always taken when these detections are found.

The Department of Health has increased wastewater testing in the area and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Local MPs squabble ■ Local MP Steph Ryan (Nationals, Euroa) has been involved in an internet squabble with Wendy Lovell (Liberal, Northern Victoria)./ The Age newspaper reported last week that Ms Ryan and Ms Lovell were part of the infighting over so-called “low tactics” employed by the Coalition to spread negative information about independent MP Ali Cupper.

Shepparton-based Ms Lovell, whose Upper House seat includes Murrindindi and part of Whittlesea, was said to have accused the National Party and Reason Party of “low tactics”.

According to the report by journalists Annika Smethurst and Paul Sakkat, the Nationals purchased the domain name of Ms Cupper to spread negative information about her. “[This] does reek of hyprocrisy on both sides,” Ms Lovell is said to have commented in a WhatsApp conversation. “It’s just sad that either side ever went that low to begin with.”

Ms Ryan reportedly replied that the National Paty was justifiably highlighting Ms Cupper’s political record.

“There’s nothing low about what we did, Wendy. We took a website to tell the people of Mildura about the issues Ali and Fiona [Patten] were selling in Melbourne.”

Local Briefs Budget highlights

■ A new community centre in Donnybrook is one step closer, with Whittlesea Council approving a proposal to build the multi-purpose facility that will deliver essential services to the fast-growing suburb.

The community centre in the Olivine Estate will cater for the rising demand for threeand four-year-old kindergarten programs. The centre is set to include three modern kindergarten rooms.

The facility will also have a space for Council’s Maternal and Child Health Services and feature a community hall and meeting rooms for hire.

Donnybrook’s population is expected to grow substantially in the coming years, with the number of residents predicted to increase from just 232 in 2019 to over 52,000 by 2041.

Whittlesea City Administrator Chris Eddy said the Council was committed to providing community hubs where people of all ages and abilities can connect with each other and key services.

“As our community grows, we recognise the need to plan ahead and deliver the infrastructure and services our residents need close to home,” Mr Eddy said.

The Council will now start on the detailed design of the facility, which is expected to be built by 2025.

New pavilion at Mt Evelyn ■ A new sporting pavilion will be built in Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve, following a motion

by Yarra Ranges Shire Councillors.

Councillors last week discussed the planning application, which entails buildings and works to construct a replacement sports pavilion, use of land for a place of assembly (community hub) and associated vegetation removal at 45 Tramway Rd, Mount Evelyn.

A new two-storey sporting facility will feature four change rooms, gym, enities, accessible toilets, first-aid room, kiosk, storage facilities, a community room, upstairs meeting room, and a multi-purpose room and foyer.

Two accessible car parks are also proposed in the application.

The building area under the proposal would expand from 487 square metres to 848 square metres, with 20 trees proposed for removal to accommodate the project (14 of these need a permit for removal).

The project is a result of the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve Masterplan in 2017, which set out the vision for future use and development of the reserve, balancing recreation needs and aspirations and the environmental sensitivity of nearby Powerful Owl habitat.

■ Broadford is getting a new nature play space and outdoor fitness equipment, and Mitchell Shire Council is looking for community input on the proposed designs.

The works, which are across two locations, are part of the activation of Broadford Parks and Playspaces project which also includes an upgrade of the Memorial Park playground that is due to start shortly.

The nature play space will be built in the open space that borders Wattle St and Aspect Boulevard and the outdoor fitness equipment pod will be constructed in the open space at Donaldson Drive.

Mitchell Council is looking for community input on the proposed nature play space and outdoor fitness equipment via two surveys which will help finalise the designs.

The Council has spoken with various community groups in Broadford to help develop the draft designs and is now looking for input from the wider community.

The Council will be holding a drop-in session to discuss the projects and answer any questions from 4.30pm to 5.30pm on Wednesday, June 23 at the Wattle St site. Submissions close at 9am on Monday, June 28.

Gong for ‘Dr Rob’ ■ Known throughout the region for his incredible work after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, Yarra Glen’s Dr Peter ‘Rob Gordon was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours on Monday (June 14).

He receives the Order of Australia Medal “for service to disaster recovery as a psychologist”.

Dr Gordon is a clinical psychologist and has worked in this field of recovery for almost 40 years.

He has been a consultant in recovery and trauma with the Red Cross since 2009. He is a former member of the ACT Bushfire Recovery Taskforce.

Dr Gordon had been a consultant psychologist with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, and remains a member of the Emergencies Psychosocial Reference Group.

He is a former member of the Victorian Bushfire Psychosocial Reovery Plan Advisory Committee.

Dr Gordon, has been a member of the Disaster Preparedness and Responses Reference Group since 2016, and is a Fellow of the College of Clinical Psychologists.

Dr Gordon has also been an Australia Day ambassador.

Ranges are regional: McLeish ■ Parts of the Yarra Ranges Shire should be re-classified as regional, not metropolitan Mebourne, Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish told State Parliament last week.

“I renew my call from last year for the Acting Premier to classify non-urban areas of the Yarra Ranges as regional, not metropolitan Melbourne, for the purposes of COVID,” Ms McLeish said.

“I have been contacted by countless Yarra Ranges residents who are up in arms about being lumped in with metro Melbourne restrictions again.

“The Labor Government even referred to the Yarra Ranges as regional last year when distributing the tourism travel vouchers, completely contradicting themselves, and believe me it did not go unnoticed by the community.

“Many communities are over 60 to 80 kilometres from

the CBD and exposure sites.

People can easily go for a walk during their allocated two hours of exercise in a 10-kilometre radius and not come across another person.

“Many work in horticulture or agriculture. There have been no active cases or hotspots listed in the Yarra Ranges during this lockdown, and there were very limited numbers reported last year.

“Small country businesses are suffering the effects of the lockdown, with many ineligible to receive government help.

The change must be made.

“The government must adopt a commonsense and flexible approach to community sport and particularly junior sport as restrictions are eased. We all know it is safer outside than inside. The response must be proportionate to the health and safety risk,” Ms McLeish said.

Marshall home protected ■ Nillumbik Shire Council is seeking to permanently protect the historic Eltham home and workplace of famed Australian author Alan Marshall.

An amendment to the Nillumbik Planning Scheme, now on public exhibition, proposes to amend the Heritage Overlay at 13 Park Rd West to preserve what is known as the Alan Marshall Bungalow and surrounds.

The bungalow was built in 1955 and is historically significant as the home and workplace of Alan Marshall until 1972.

Marshall was a prominent Australian writer, story teller, humanist and social documenter.

While living at the Park Rd West property, Marshall wrote several important publications including his best-known work, I Can Jump Puddles in 1955 – the first of a trilogy of fictionalised biographies which was followed by This Is The Grass in 1962 and In Mine Own Heart in 1963.

He also wrote the historical book Pioneers & Painters: One Hundred Years of Eltham and its Shire in 1971.

A heritage overlay for the property was first applied in 2001. Submissions about the amendment can be made until Monday, July 12.

Local Briefs Search in Wollert

■ Missing Persons Squad detectives began searching the Wollert Waste Management Centre yesterday (Tues.) as part of their ongoing investigation into the suspicious disappearance of Kelly ‘Ju’ Zhang.

Police are expected to search through landfill at the Bridge Inn Rd site over the next four days.

A number of searches were conducted earlier this year in bushland in the Heidelberg West and Alphington areas.

Ju was last seen at her home on Winchester Avenue in Epping about 5.30pm on Monday, February 1.

At the time the 33-year-old went missing, she was believed to be wearing a pink nightgown and possibly pink slippers.

A 35-year-old Doncaster man has been charged with one count of murder.

The investigation into the matter remains ongoing.

Anyone with information about Ju’s disappearance is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential online report at www.crimestoppers vic.com.au Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper, Missing Persons Squad, said: “We’re hopeful that the search this week will move us closer to ultimately being able to find Ju and give her family even a small amount of comfort that she’s been located.

“While we do have someone before the court, it is important that we continue to follow up all avenues in terms of Ju’s current location.

“If there is anyone out there with information about Ju’s disappearance who is yet to speak to police, then I am again appealing for them to come forward and make contact with investigators,” Detective Inspector Stamper said.

Robbert Veerman requested Council to revise its planning and building approvals practice to reduce the direct CO2 emissions of all new buildings in particular by setting defaults for orientation of boundaries on subdivisions, and building envelopes within individual blocks to enable optimum harvesting of natural solar heat and light in winter, and shading in summer.

■ After the welcome rain during the week, conditions were a little wet but playable on Saturday at Yea Golf Club for the first round of two of the Prideaux Cup. Winner of the day with 34 stableford points was Jonathan Fisher (13) from second Greg Clements (13) with 32 points.

Third was Bill Dredge (18) with 30 points from Chris Smith on CB with Michael Spagnolo (6) fifth on 29.

Michael was NTP on the 11th and Mark Mullaly won the Club Award. Some 22 men and two ladies were on course after the enforced competition lockdown.

■ Tony Richardson, Murrindindi Climate Network Inc., asked that Murrindindi Council use part of the funds allocated for the development of programs which relate to the environment and mitigating the effects of climate change to conduct a feasibility study of the establishment of a Farm Forestry (AgroForestry) plantation on land controlled

by Council.

■ Study would demonstrate the feasibility of Council (and other private land owners) developing an Agroforestry plantation on marginal agricultural land which would have three main outputs: production of high-quality timber at the end of the 25-year rotation, creation of jobs in the Agroforestry sector and creation of Australian Carbon Credit Units which could be used to partially offset Council emissions and assist in achieving a net-zero-emissions target by 2050 ■ Project would also include part-sponsorship of a Master Tree Grower workshop series, ■ using the Council land as a case study, whereby council officers and Murrindindi residents could learn more about the establishment and management of a Farm Forestry plantation ■ The anticipated cost of such a study would be $40,000.

Mr Richardson asked that Council conduct an investigation into the feasibility of creating a Virtual Microgrid in Marysville using the Enosi Energy Powertracer software, with Energy Locals as the retailer.

■ This study would require the co-operation of approximately 10 Marysville households and one larger property with a significant solar and battery installation ■ The study will also examine the potential for delivering FCAS (Frequency Control Ancillary Service) financial benefits ■ This installation could be a pilot project for the more comprehensive SENSE project proposed by MCN ■ The proposed feasibility study would require no additional hardware, and the anticipated cost of such a study would be $10,000.

David Webb Ware asked to speak to Council about how to address the inequity with the Rural 1 differential rate for larger farming properties ■ Inequity exists between Rural 1 and Residential and Commercial in that larger Rural 1 properties individually pay a disproportional amount of rates ■ Rates calculated principally by valuation changes between the rate categories can be biased against the larger rural properties ■ Strongly supports council in their attempts to solve the inequities by maintaining the Rural 1 discount and reintroducing the 25 per cent commercial premium ■ Future consideration may be to introduce another tier of Rural rating with large properties of 250 Ha or more (for example) having a larger discount on the general rate ■ Seeking clarification in the budget document where a 2.52 per cent increase in the total amount to be raised by general rates is more than the State Governments cap of 1.5 per cent.

New officers at Yea Garden Club ■ Yea Garden Club is hoping that their program for 2021-22 can proceed without interference from COVID. Meeting on the second Thursday each month, the Club enjoys a mix of presentations on gardening related topics at the RSL Hall, Yea, interspersed with visits to beautiful gardens in the area, and further beyond.

Christmas in July is planned for the next meeting in July, followed in August by a seminar with guest speaker Stephen Ryan (Dicksonia Rare Plants), former Gardening Australia host, at the Country Club Hotel Yea. As the weather improves and gardens emerge from winter slumber, excursions to Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, and other interesting show gardens are planned.

For those who enjoy getting their hands dirty, members of the club have over many years held a winter working bee at Yea Lawn Cemetery to prune the roses.

The annual plant stall held in conjunction with Yea Rotary Open Gardens weekend in November is a great opportunity to purchase plants propagated by club member (not always available commercially) at very reasonable prices.

History project underway at Toolangi ■ The Toolangi Castella Local History Project was initiated in 2020 through the Community Planning Scheme, thanks to the Toolangi-Castella Community House and the Shire of Murrindindi.

We have a group of local residents involved from Toolangi and Castella, some with a long family and community history of several generations, some with a long term residence and some newer to the area.

Additionally there are Taungurung representatives, including Taungurung Land and Waters Council representative Brad Letman.

We outlined a project and were invited to apply for funding for the Toolangi Castella Local History Action Plan. This became part of the Toolangi-Castella Community Plan.

Our initial application for funding to the Shire of Murrindindi, under the Community Planning Scheme was successful- we were notified later 2020 of this.

This grant covers filming and editing, by a professional community film maker (Videocentric), of interviews with some of the oldest residents in the area, to record a permanent oral history of their stories.

A Community History exhibition will be held at the C.J. Dennis Hall in October, with oral presentations and visual displays by locals, supported by technology, on a variety of local history topics: ■ indigenous history; ■ gold mining; ■ paling; logging; ■ the extensive timber tramway networks; bushfires and the birth and history of our local CFA; ■ the guest houses and tourism; ■ agriculture and horticulture; ■ environmental history; the schools’ histories - there were three in Toolangi/Castella; ■ the Scientific history - the Seismic Station and the Magnetic Resonance Station; ■ the Potato Research Station and its history; ■ the Strawberry Runner Certification Scheme and its importance to Australian horticulture; ■ C.J. Dennis, Australia’s most prolific author; ■ the artists of Toolangi, including history of the Sculpture Trail; ■ the history of the Church; ■ the social organisations including our Community House.

It is an amazing community’s history.

Township plan for Whittlesea ■ Whittlesea City Council has adopted a plan that will preserve the unique, rural character of Whittlesea township.

The Whittlesea Township Plan was adopted at the June 1 Council meeting. It reflects the community's aspirations for the Whittlesea Township and details how this vision can be achieved over the next 15-20 years.

Administrator Peita Duncan said the final plan was developed after extensive community consultation over many years.

"I would like to thank all those who took the time to share detailed feedback with Council during the consultation on the draft Whittlesea Township Plan.

“Your input has helped shape service delivery in the Whittlesea Township along with the management of land, built areas and public spaces," Ms Duncan said.

Council considered the 48 submissions received as part of feedback on the draft plan from residents and business owners.

"I feel confident that the final plan has captured the community's desire to preserve the unique, rural character of Whittlesea Township," Ms Duncan said.

One of the key themes from the community consultation was around the uncertainty of land use on the periphery of the township.

"We know that certainty on containing any growth up to the existing Township is important to the community, and Council will continue to advocate to the Victorian Government for a permanent boundary," Ms Duncan said.

Whittlesea Council acknowledged that not all ideas from the community could be incorporated into the Whittlesea Township Plan, however, said it would consider them as other future guiding documents are developed such as the Investment Attraction Plan, Destination Plan and Strong Local Economy Strategy.

"We will work with the local community to see how Council can further support business growth and further promote Whittlesea Township as a visitor destination," Ms Duncan said.

The Whittlesea Township Plan will be reviewed every two years to ensure it continues to address evolving challenges and opportunities for the community.

Council News Shape future of Green Wedge ■ The City of Whittlesea is calling on residents to have their say and help shape the future use of Green Wedge areas.

About 60 per cent of land in the municipality is protected by the Victorian Government from further urban development - an area three times the size of Phillip Island.

Known as the Green Wedge, these areas include much-loved national parks, forests, reservoirs and nationally significant plants and animals as well as farms.

Whittlesea Council is reviewing its 10-year plan for how the area is managed and wants to hear from the community.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said Council wanted to hear first-hand what people most value and love about the Green Wedge areas.

"We know these spaces are not just environmentally significant but provide our community with opportunities to enjoy recreation and leisure time," she said.

Rethinking waste ■ Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill by 68,000 tonnes each year and the amount of waste generated per person by 20 per cent are just some of the targets set out in the City of Whittlesea's Rethinking Waste Plan 20212030.

The plan features 34 actions to be implemented over the next 10 years and will be used as a guide to Council's waste management and resource recovery services for the community.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson described the new approach to managing waste across the City of Whittlesea as visionary.

"The Rethinking Waste Plan 2021-2030 responds to changes in community expectations, the waste and recycling industry, and government policy directions," she said.

"It also looks at the big picture in terms of international best practice and trends in waste and resource recovery.

"Written and presented in a clear and simplified way that is easy to understand, this plan considers our demographics and growth projections and sets clear targets that we can measure and report against."

In developing the Rethinking Waste Plan, Council engaged extensively with community and industry via surveys, face to face discussions, focus groups and discussions with emerging leaders and school children.

"Our breadth of engagement generated some amazing ideas and feedback and I would like to thank everyone who contributed," Ms Wilson said.

Sport Briefs Pennant Final ■ Sunday saw an exciting and nail biting win to Yea boys pennant final at Seymour versus Eildon GC. In five close matches the last 30 minutes saw fortunes ebb and flow. Number 5 for Yea lost on the 18th to go down by 2.

Number 4, Captain Greg Clements went to the 19th where he sank a 10 foot putt to win 1 up. Number three missed a putt on the 17th to continue the match and lost 2/1.

Number 2 Lachie Wischer had a dogfight with his opponent but prevailed with two excellent pars to win 2/1, With the final 2-2, Wayne Rowe Number 1 held a hole lead going down the 18th only to lose posting a 7 to his opponent’s 5.

Things getting pretty tight. Wayne on the 19th a par 3 hit the back of the green while his opponent was short right 15 metres off the green. The Eildon player chipped up to 8 feet and Wayne chipped up just missing the hole but going by four feet. The Eildon player left his putt just short and Wayne stood tall sinking the par putt to win one up.

Golf: bowl stays at home ■ The Yea Pennant Team wandered off to Seymour for another round. An enjoyable day, the weather behaved and lunch was good. The golf was not so good. Once again only one winning their game, another battling it out to the 18th still not able to score a victory others back in the club house a little earlier licking their wounds. Oh well another round next week on home soil so shall see how we go.

On Wednesday there was a social day as all were in preparation for the Challenge Bowl the next day and what an exciting day it was.

The morning had arrived, all geared up to go, keeping fingers crossed that the heavens didn’t open up. Some 54 players all lined up in anticipation hoping to take home some fame for the day.

The course looked in top shape thank you to all the volunteers you do a fantastic job. Judging by the scores many struggled to keep it together. When all had completed their 18 holes it was back to the Club House for Presentations, food and shopping.

A big thanks to those who helped in the office without you it would not have happened so smoothly.

One of our teams managed to secure the points to win our own Bowl. Team Di Elliott, Vicki Clements and Vicky Butler. The winners did not finish there.

Di Holdsworth took the B Grade win. Also another top effort :three out of the four NTP were won by the local girls Margie Wright, Meryl Connell and Vicki Clements.

On the second six holes, the best two scores count and on the last six holes all scores count.

Runners-up were Ken Whitfort (3), Mick Spagnolo (6) and Russell Wealands (18) with 68. Mick Spagnolo was NTP on the 14th and the team of Graeme Bryant, Norm McCallum and David Ngo were the lucky Club Award winners receiving $4 each.

■ Karen Christensen of Wandong has been rewarded with an Order of Australia honour “for service to the community of Wandong”.

Her activities have included work for the Wandong Hiostory Group, the Wandong Heathcote Junction War Memorial Committee, Wandong Heathcote Junction Community Group, Wandong Public Hall Committee.

Karen was involved in the ANZAC of the Year through the RSL in 2020.

Kirrip name idea ■ A new community centre is being built at 135 De Rossi Boulevard in Wollert East in partnership with the Victorian School Building Authority.

The centre will open in 2022 and will include a kindergarten, a large community hall, a maternal and child health service, meeting rooms and a shared community kitchen.

Whittlesea Council is proposing to name this centre ‘Kirrip Community Centre’.

Kirrip means ‘friend’ in the local Woi Wurrung language of the Wurundjeri people

Tourism boost

■ Yarra Ranges Council Council will extend its partnership agreement with Yarra Ranges Tourism for another 12 months, providing $489,016 in funding to the tourism body.

Council has supported Yarra Ranges Tourism through a partnership agreement since 2006.

Through this partnership, Council works with Yarra Ranges Tourism, the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association and the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group to promote the Yarra Valley, Dandenong Ranges and Warburton Valley as premier tourist destinations.

“These groups have demonstrated, through achieving key performance indicators in their funding agreement, that they are successfully leading the development of a strong local tourism industry, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said a Council representative.

A report will come back to Council on the outcomes of the Victorian Government’s Visitor Economy Recovery and Reform Plan – Visitor Economy Partnerships, and its impact on Council’s future partnering agreements with Yarra Ranges Tourism.

Councillors complimented the work of Yarra Ranges Tourism and its positive direct and indirect impacts on the local economy, then unanimously voted to extend the partnership agreement.

Effort at M’dindi

■ Murrindindi Shire Council late last week sought to reach out to victims of the storms, and the subsequent power outages.

The Council opened the shower facilities at the Yea Recreation Reserve on Saturday and Sunday.

The Kinglake Library and Customer Service Centre provided a warm refuge, and drinking water, over the weekend.

Attendees were required to check-in and COVIDSafe cleaning standards were in place.

$81,204 for Mayor ■ Cr Peter Perkins is set to receive a Mayoral allowance of $81,204 following a recommendation put to last week’s Planning and Consultation Meeting.

Cr Perkins and Cr Natalie moved the motion, which also provides $26,245 to be paid to each Councillor.

■ A new community centre in Donnybrook is one step closer, with Whittlesea Council approving a proposal to build the multi-purpose facility that will deliver essential services to the fast-growing suburb.

Jab hub at S. Morang

■ The City of Whittlesea will play an important role in supporting public health and protecting against the spread of Coronavirus by hosting a mass vaccination hub at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre.

Northern Health will run the vaccination centre until the end of 2021 and offer both Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines through walk-ups and bookings, subject to supply.

DPV Health, which was operating a walk-up vaccination clinic for AstraZeneca at PRACC, moved its clinic to Epping Memorial Hall from last Saturday (June 12).

City of Whittlesea Chief Executive Officer Craig Lloyd said the expansion of PRACC to a mass vaccination site would boost the ability to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible.

“We are pleased to partner with the Victorian Government and Northern Health to provide a site capable of offering both vaccines,” Mr Lloyd said.

“This program will make a huge difference to the number of people able to get the vaccine, with a large number of vaccinations expected to be administered daily.

“PRACC is ideally suited for this purpose. It has the necessary floor space and the space for secure fridges and freezers legally required to store the vaccines, and it is easily accessible from public transport.

Recovery help for Nillumbik ■ Nillumbik Shire Council has released a critical new “roadmap” to support the community in its recovery from the pandemic.

The Nillumbik Community Pandemic Recovery Plan 2021-22 was endorsed at the latest Council meeting, just prior to the Shire going into its fourth lockdown .

The plan outlines Council’s initial response, along with the actions it will take to ensure the Nillumbik community can recover as restrictions continue to evolve and life shifts to a ‘COVID normal’.

The plan’s actions span across several areas of Council, and will be supported by state and federal government initiatives, and those delivered by community organisations and local partners.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Peter Perkins said Council’s approach throughout the pandemic had been comprehensive and collaborative, and would continue to be so.

“Throughout the pandemic response phase, Council has worked closely with the federal and state governments, as well as our local partners to deliver the necessary support and services to our community. Collaboration is a key principle of any work we do, and is especially the case for pandemic recovery, Cr Perkins said.

Seymour link to Lex ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Lex Pierce.

The 40-year-old Langwarrin man is wanted on warrants in relation to multiple charges including serious assaults on police, threats to kill and other offences which occurred last week in Langwarrin.

Pierce is Caucasian about 185cm tall with a shaved head.

He is known to frequent the Langwarrin, Dandenong, Hawthorn, Cranbourne, Sale, Lakes Entrance, Traralgon and Seymour area.

Investigators have released an image of Pierce in the hope that someone may have information on his current whereabouts.

Bold move pays ■ Former Mildura trainer Terry Gange who has spent the majority of his life in Sunraysia before

making a bold move to shift to Bendigo a few weeks back, was thrilled with the performance of 4Y0 Modern Art-Caro Ella gelding Mister Jimaringle to win the Aviva Communities Bendigo Pace over 1650 metres at Lord’s Raceway Bendigo on Wednesday.

Driven to perfection by Charlton based Ryan Sanderson, Mister Jimaringle starting from the extreme draw pushed through to lob one/one shortly after the start as American Tiger (gate three) led.

Pushed back a spot when the favourite Magic Mike after being trapped three wide from outside the front line went forward to race exposed, Mister Jimaringle coming off an eye catching fifth to Blue Chip Delight a week earlier commenced a move in the final circuit and despite being forced four wide on the final bend, ran home best to gain the day by 1.9 metres over Magic Mike, with Shawami Lass third 7.1 metres back from mid-field. The mile rate 155.4.

■ Yabby Dam co-trainers Anton Golino and Jack McKinnon snared the Haras Des Trotteurs 3Y0 Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres with beautifully bred Andover Hall-La Coocaracha colt Webster Hall. Making only his second race appearance, Webster Hall driven by stable reinsman Jason Lee possied one/one from gate two on the second line but was quickly off and running to park outside the leader Yankee Lover which led from gate five. With Lee dictating the tempo, Webster Hall coasted to the front over the concluding stages to win virtually untouched from Yankee Lover by 4.5 metres in a rate of 2-04.7. Leading out from gate two before being snookered three markers as both Our Christiano (gate four) and Mach Assassin (gate six) crossed, Cobber finished full of running along the sprint lane to prevail by a half neck in 2-01.3 over Mach Assassin and Pas Guarantee which came from last to be four wide on the home turn to be 4.5 metres away third.

● Christopher Walken ■ Percy Vs Goliath is a film that will remind viewers of the Australian classic, The Castle.

But while The Castle was a comedy with the serious idea of the ordinary man taking on the big boys, Percy Vs Goliath strikes a more serious tone, and is based on a true story.

Based on a 1998 lawsuit, Percy Vs. Goliath follows Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser (Christopher Walken) who defends himself against a major conglomerate when the company's genetically modified (GMO) canola is discovered in his crops.

He and his family risk everything defending themselves against the giant corporation while representing thousands of other disenfranchised farmers in a campaign to protect farmers' rights and the world's food supply against corporate greed.

Percy is our Everyman, a humble farmer who grows crops and propagates seeds the way his family has down the generations, and his apparent ordinariness makes him an easy target for the huge corporation Monsanto, as Percy's success as a crop farmer is seen as a threat to their business model, so he is an easy target to grind into the dust.

But they reckoned without Percy's and his wife Louise's (Roberta Maxwell) simple but strong beliefs in who they are and their confidence in what is right and wrong.

When Percy hears of the global suicide rate of farmers who have been squeezed into crushing debt by big corporations, he decides he must fight on behalf of farmers across the world.

Eventually Percy wins through, but not without some cost. But more than 20 years after the court case, the real Percy and Louise still receive letters of gratitude from farmers all over the world - and genetically modified crops have not taken over.

In the film's narrative, Percy is brought to prominence by environmentalist Rebecca (Christina Ricci), and, like The Castle, it's a small town lawyer Jackson Weaver (Zach Braff), who takes the case all the way to the Canadian Supreme Court.

Percy Vs Goliath is a slow burn for the first 30 minutes but gradually hooks the viewer in until the final credits.

Walken gives a stunning performance as the film's protagonist, and Percy is a gift of a role for a fine actor.

As his supportive but assertive wife Louise, Roberta Maxwell radiates warmth and common sense, and there is a lovely mature chemistry between her and Walken.

In the movie world, youth so often dominates, so it's refreshing to see a high quality and thoughtful film in which 78-year-old Walken and 80-year-old Maxwell arethe stars.

Writer Tony Birch will deliver a ‘living eulogy’ – paying tribute to someone or something still of this earth, while vocalist and instrumentalist Bumpy will present a moving musical performance.

Better Off Said is an opportunity to release some words, thoughts and reflections for the living and dead.

Baker and Hardy explain that the guests are asked to write and read anything that resonates with them – it may be poignant, sad, raw, political or funny.

“It may be a time to find closure or a moment to shout something aloud they wish they’d said. It could be an important message to someone special or a piece of history they feel their voice could have improved. This is an opportunity to sing their truths from the rooftops before it’s too late,” said Baker and Hardy.

Sisters in Crime ■ Sisters in Crime’s 28th Scarlet Stiletto Awards for best short crime and mystery stories is offering a record $11,910 in prizes this year.

Entries close on August 31.

“Crime does pay – at least on the page,” said Carmel Shute, secretary of Sisters in Crime.

“And writing is a lot safer than holding up your local service station, especially during a pandemic.”

“We’re thrilled that all but one sponsor has continued their support despite these financially fraught times – and that two new supporters have come on board.”

One of the awards is the Viliama Grakalic Art and Crime Award ($750) named in honour of the late artist, and long-time member, who bequeathed $4000 to Sisters in Crime.

Viliama Grakalic was born in Zagreb and trained in fine art. In Australia she became a prominent goldsmith and sculptor. Her work is housed in public gallery collections Australiawide.

In her later years Viliama decided to write a crime novel with an art theme, set in country Victoria. Breast cancer sadly took control, so as a pensioner she bequeathed “anything left over” to Sisters in Crime. At SheKilda, Sisters in Crime 10th anniversary convention in 2001, Viliama won the very first ‘Be Immortalised in Fiction’ competition, which means her name appeared in the next novel by Lauren Henderson, the international guest of honour and self-proclaimed ‘Tart Noir Queen’.

Shute said that several sponsors had also upped the amount on offer.

“Our 15 sponsors are a diverse bunch. What they have in common is an unswerving commitment to women’s writing. which has paid off in spades. Since the awards began 28 years ago, 3896 stories have been entered and 30 winners – including winners of the Shoe and category winners – have gone on to have books published,” she said.

Darkfield Radio ■ At-home audio experience, Darkfield Radio is back this month in Australia for its second season, Knot.

Part of the Tribeca Film Festival Immersive Lineup, Knot is a three-part immersive audio experience designed for one person which unfolds in three different locations in one evening, blurring the lines between real and imagined.

Produced in Australia by Melbourne-based company Realscape Productions, Knot takes audiences through three intersecting, interwoven episodes revolving around a traumatic event, questioning how inevitable anything is.

In the first episode audiences will situate themselves on a park bench, the second in a car, and the third in a room of their home. For the story to be complete, all three episodes will need to be experienced.

"Darkfield Radio Season One exposed audiences to the mysterious and supernatural inside their homes, magnified by Darkfield’s signature 360 degree binaural sound”, said Amy Johnson, producer at Realscape Productions.

“We’re looking forward to getting audiences outside of their homes for Season 2, in COVIDsafe settings of course, and pushing them out of their comfort zones even more.”

Ahead of the Season Two launch in Australia on June 25, Darkfield Radio Season One is broadcasting to homes around Australia for a limited season until June 20.

Darkfield Radio Season One was the first ever audio-only experience to be a part of Venice International Film Festival, before being nominated for various awards at Raindance Film Festival.

Singing Swallows ■ Singing Swallows, written and directed by Melbourne based theatre-maker Romi Kupfer, is being presented at Theatre Works, 14 Acland

Street, St Kilda on June 23, 24, 26 at 6.30pm.

Singing Swallows is an intimate headphone experience designed to connect young people with those who went through the Holocaust.

This compilation of four Holocaust stories is created for young audiences between the ages of nine and 18 years, with each story focusing on four different journeys of Jewish children/ young adults during the Holocaust.

The stories, compiled from interviews with Holocaust survivors are voice recorded by young Jewish children in primary school.

In between verbal storytelling, performers on stage activate a recyclable set, bringing to life the personal experiences heard through individual headphones worn by the audience.

Romi Kupfer describes Singing Swallows as exploring 'what life was like for a young person during this time and how much they might've understood that their communities, identity and lives were at risk.

Beauty and The Beast Jr ■ The Young Australian Broadway Chorus (YABC) presents Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr from July 8-10 at the National Theatre, St Kilda.

Inspired by the nine-time Tony-nominated original Broadway production and Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr will showcase a 70-strong cast of talented young performers.

Gazpacho ■ Peter Green’s Gazpacho works more as a tribute than a play. It serves as a requiem for the lives lost during the Spanish Civil War interweaving the words of Federico Lorca (Jim Daly) with vignettes of those who lost their lives, faced starvation and those sentenced to death. Whilst the Spanish references are specific and probably unfamiliar to many, the theme is universal.

One only has to think of innocent civilians suffering in war zones today.

The ensemble (Julie Dawson, Peter Green, Dion Mills, Louisa Williamson) take on the roles of the dead, soldiers guarding prisoners, the Republicans, the Nationalists and Communists.

We hear the voices of grieving mothers, of simple farmers and starving civilians. The short sixty minute duration of the play, however, limits the capacity to develop the pathos one would find in scenarios where an ideological discussion takes place against the backdrop of a death sentence.

Faye Bendrup’s direction made good use of

the simple set, four frames that could be easily moved to contain the performance space, and the lighting could be directed to accentuate single performers when needed or create atmosphere as required.

Original music (Faye Bendrups, Dan Bendrups) punctuated the scenes the feel of which might be considered more socialist than typically Spanish in flavour.

The influence of Lorca and his writing on those fighting in the Spanish Civil War is indeterminate though Green’s work poses an intriguing possibility about the power of poetry in this regard.

Lorca was abducted by Nationalist forces and executed in the Spanish countryside near the farm of Cortijo de Gazpacho. Along with Hemingway and Orwell, both of whom fought in the civil war, Lorca’s contribution to letters remains. This work whets the appetite suggesting there’s more here to be explored about the man and his work.

Gruesome Playground Injuries

■ The American playwright Jajiv Joseph’s (2011) brilliant, funny yet dark and complex play Gruesome Playground Injuries, performed at The Butterfly Club CBD Melbourne.

It is competently directed by Ellen Wiltshire and brought to the stage by Deep Cut Productions. This play is a non-chronological journey that begins 30 years ago and is about loss, love, pain and regret. Its disjointed structure is not chronological but rather by jumping around in time yet keeping to the same theme of hurt, pain, loss and regret ‘cleverly’ captures the human nature of memory.

This production provides us with some great young and exciting talent. The music was composed by Maddy Monja who provides music that creates an appropriate mood as a complementary background to the play. The music at times sounds dissonant with melodic fragments woven into the overall canvas, fitting well to each scene.

Rory Harman (Doug) and Marley Correy (Kayleen) provided the intimate audience with a delightfully balanced performance in their powerful, realistic interpretation of the characters they represent.

Harman and Correy sustained the audience’s attention throughout as the chemistry between them was exactly right, as they moved through a series of emotions over a long and sustained period. One almost feels Doug and Kayleen’s pain and suffering, and this engenders real empathy in the audience.

A most enjoyable and refreshing experience on a rather cold evening leading into fear of another COVID lockdown in Melbourne.

■ At the altest Marquee Club luncheon at the Emerald Hotel, the entertainment industry came together to celebrate John Blackman and his four-year battle with cancer.

After having reconstructive surgery to the mouth and face, it has been a long and courageous journey for John.

Of course John enjoyed a remarkable career on radio and television with the hilarious voice overs on Hey Hey It's Saturday.

John was also a corporate speaker and M.C. for functions all over Australia. With the cancer battle, all of his work dried up to nothing and now he is fighting back.

We all came together to support one of the nicest guys in the business. Probably one of the funniest lunches I have ever attended. When you get Molly, Red Symons and John Blackman together in the same room, all with microphones, no-one is missed.

Stroke more likely ■ There's little doubt the pandemic is making a lot of people a little obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness.

However, OCD is a real mental health disorder that's about more than just washing hands. For adults dealing with a clinical case of obsessive-compulsive disorder, a new study finds troubling news about their brain health later in life.

Researchers say OCD patients are over three times more likely to suffer an ischemic stroke than those without the condition.

An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot interrupts the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain. This is the more common version of a stroke, in comparison to haemorrhagic strokes which involve a burst blood vessel causing bleeding in the brain.

Overall, strokes are the second-leading cause of death worldwide, trailing only heart disease.

Roger Daltrey fights back

■ The Who lead singer Roger Daltrey has joined the wave of rock musicians speaking out against woke culture and its effect on society.

Speaking with DJ Zane Lowe on Apple Music, the Baba O'Riley singer said that the "woke generation" is creating a "miserable world" for themselves and everyone else.

"It's just getting harder to disseminate the truth," Daltrey said.

"It's almost like, now we should turn the whole thing off. Go back to newsprint, go back to word of mouth, and start to read books again. It's becoming so absurd now with AI, all the tricks it can do, and the woke generation," he said.

"It's terrifying, the miserable world they're going to create for themselves. I mean, anyone who's lived a life and you see what they're doing, you just know that it's a route to nowhere.

“Especially when you've lived through the periods of a life that we've had the privilege to. We've had the golden era. There's no doubt about that."

Daltrey compared the woke generation with previous generations. "We came out of a war, we came out of a levelled society, completely flattened bomb sites and everything," Daltrey said.

"And we've been through socialist governments. We've seen the communist system fail in the Soviet Union. I've been in those communist countries while they were communist."

■ Over the past year, food prices are up 3.5 per cent, with eggs and meat up by over 5 per cent; gas is up 22 per cent and is expected to get even higher by this summer; lumber is up 250 percent; new home prices are up $36,000, with overall housing up 11 per cent; and new cars are up 9 percent, the highest in 68 years. Feeding the problem is the sharp price increase in commodities vital to our basic needs.

Microchip prices are up by 25 percent over the last year, hiking the price of items from phones to televisions to car parts. Meanwhile, increased corn prices will further impact a variety of food products.

The primary driver of the current inflation comes through money printing by the Federal Reserve. The Fed nearly doubled its bond purchases since the beginning of the pandemic, pumping almost $4 trillion into the economy. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said just last week that she is not concerned about it. The White House says that any inflation seen will be mild and temporary.

How’s this for confidence?

■ For almost half of all Americans, modesty may not be their best quality. A new study finds nearly one in two people believe they're the best person they know. In a recent survey of 2000 US residents, 81 per cent say they believe that humankind is inherently good. Three in four believe they themselves are fundamentally a good person. When researchers asked respondents how they would compare themselves to others in their lives, 46 per cent went a step further, admitting (in their eyes) they're "better" than everyone else they know.

The survey was conducted by One Poll and commissioned by Behold Retreats, a wellness company that specialises in the therapeutic use of plant-based medicines to aid in personal and spiritual growth. Looking at responses by gender, female respondents were less likely to think of themselves as good (67% vs 86% of men) and more likely to believe that humanity is inherently bad (20% vs 4% of men).

Time for early release

■ California is beginning early release credits for about 76,000 inmates, including tens of thousands who were convicted of violent crimes, as the state continues to reduce its prison population.

The Associated Press reported that of the 76,000 who will be eligible for early release, some 63,000 were convicted of violent crimes.

They will now be eligible to obtain good behaviour credits that will "shorten their sentences by one-third instead of the one-fifth that had been in place since 2017," the outlet reported.

That number includes 20,000 inmates who were sentenced to life sentences with the possibility of parole.

"More than 10,000 inmates convicted of a second serious but nonviolent offense under the state's 'three strikes' law will be eligible for release after serving half their sentences.

“That's an increase from the current time-served credit of one-third of their sentence," the AP said.

■ The bodies of hundreds of New York City residents who died from COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic remain in a series of trailers along the Brooklyn waterfront more than a year later, according to the New York Post.

Dina Maniotis, executive deputy commissioner of the Chief Medical Examiner's Office, told a City Council health committee that there are about 750 bodies in long-term storage at the "temporary" emergency morgue that opened last April, the paper reported.

Early in the pandemic, refrigerated trucks were used in many places across the US to augment capacity at morgues and funeral homes, which were stretched beyond capacity as COVID spiralled out of control.

"In the very near future, we will begin to notify all the families that we've been working with that we are now going to ramp our operations down slowly, give them the time that they need, and we'll keep the operation going as they need it," Maniotis told the committee.

The facility was meant to give families extra time to make their decisions during the days of broad lockdowns and severely decreased mobility. Some have reportedly requested their relatives' remains be buried in the city's potter's field, Hart Island, while city officials have lost touch with others, Maniotis said.

Magazine ■ Irene Hewitt was born in 1922 and began singing at an early age. Irene was 18 when she became the resident vocalist in Tye's Radio Revue on 3XY, which was broadcast every Sunday night from the Princess Theatre.

The compere was Eric Pearce, and Irene sang Ida Sweet As Apple Cider as her debut song on the show. On many occasions Irene sang duets with Jack Perry.

She sang at many of the local dances and was also resident vocalist at the Coconut Grove Nightclub in Chapel St, South Yarra.

Around that time she married her first husband, who played saxophone in the band at The Coconut Grove. Irene also sang regularly at the famous Chevron Hotel.

In 1954 Irene appeared on the national radio show Australia's Hour of Song with Dick Fair.

She was a regular guest on ABC radio shows and sang on cruise ships.

In 1957 Irene was cast in the television series Take That which was a ‘live to air’ 15-minute school classroom comedy. It was one of the first comedy shows produced by Crawford Productions, a bit like Yes What, the old radio series.

Take That also starred English actor Phillip Stainton, Joff Ellen, Frank Rich, Keith Eden and Jack Perry.

Irene sang on many television variety shows during her career. Her film credits include Blue Fire Lady, Dimboola, I Live With Me Dad and Lonely Hearts.

In 1981 Irene was cast as Mrs Swabb, the housekeeper, in an Australian tour of the Alan Bennett-play, Habeus Corpus. The cast included a great bunch of popular television actors - English actor Frank Thornton (Are You Being Served), Pat McDonald (Number 96) and Liz Burch (The Flying Doctors) .

There was a night during the tour when a leg snapped off the stage settee that almost everyone had to sit on. Irene madly searched around back stage in the dark and finally walked onstage with a paint tin which she popped under the edge of the settee and the play proceeded without a hitch.

and his wife and they always sent each other Christmas cards. Irene played guest roles in many television series including Prisoner and The Henderson Kids.

Irene loved music and was a regular attendee at the International Sinatra meetings. Some of her recordings were - When Johnny Comes Marching Home, I Didn't Know The Gun Was Loaded and One More River To Cross (with Don Harper and His Orchestra).

In 1997 Irene was a guest vocalist at a special fundraising concert for 96.5FM. It was a big show with Val Jellay, Clyde Simpson, Bruce Skeggs, David McGee, Ray Lawrence, The Creole Bells and many others in the line up.

Irene Hewitt loved life and when she was very ill she just refused to give in and slipped out of the hospital to visit her friends.

She passed away in 2004 and I attended her funeral. Long time friends Terry Gill and Carole Anne got everyone singing. Irene would have loved it and also the thunderous applause as the coffin was carried out of the funeral parlour.

National Portrait Gallery in focus

Living Memory- National Photographic Portrait Prize 2021.

The National Photographic Portrait Prize is a stalwart of the National Gallery's annual calendar, offering substantial cash and equipment prizes for professional, amateur and aspiring young Australian photographers, and the opportunity for artists to have their work shown in a national gallery alongside their peers.

This year more than 3000 entries were received, and the judges have selected 180 works for the exhibition of finalists, almost double the usual amount.

Advertising Standards has raised a red flag on the spot showing a Kenyan athlete competing in the Bindi Walk. Viewers complained, and the TV ad had to be revised, deleting the name given to the name of the Kenyan athlete as it contradicted the Code of Ethics.

Remember Rin Tin Tin ■ Remember when TV was in its infancy, and you raced home from school to catch the latest adventures of Rusty and his four-legged friend Rin Tin Tin? Child actor Lee Acker played Rusty in the series in 1950, when his part came to an end Lee drifted in and out of bit parts in movies, became a carpenter and fell into poverty having spent all his earnings. Last month Lee died, and a group of friends paid for his funeral.

Stars: * * * ½ Review: Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone of a walled off Las Vegas to pull off a monumental heist, but only have matter of hours before they all face nuclear annihilation.

The Zombie genre has gone a long way since "White Zombie" (1932) with Bela Lugosi and George A. Romero's seminal 1968 classic "Night of the Living Dead" and his universally acclaimed follow up "Dawn of the Dead" in 1978, and this latest offering from co-writer/ director Zack Snyder, who made his feature directorial debut with the acclaimed 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead," and went on to helm such films as "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," "Sucker Punch," "300" and "Zack Snyder's Justice League," among others, has delivered a stylishly wild and insanely entertaining thrill ride.

Inspired by John Carpenter's "Escape From New York" and James Cameron's "Aliens," among others, there's something for everyone in the mix: a zombie movie, an action movie, a heist movie, and even some nostalgic family drama, all intertwined with an abundance of bloody confrontations and twists-and-turns, all led with a firm hand and soft heart by former world wrestling champ turned actor Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame, Blade Runner 2049 & Spectre), and aided by a bunch of rag-tag misfits that includes Ella Pernell, Tig Notaro and Matthias Schweighofer as the safecracker, to name a few.

Filled with jaw-dropping imagery, Zack Snyder has created a well constructed, well paced and an immensely gratifying zombie-horror popcorn adventure yarn, a diabolically R18+ fun and grandiose gore-fest of spills, chills, humour, slicing, dicing, chopping, running, jumping, shooting and munching mayhem, a shrewdly executed rollercoaster ride with an abundance of bite for horror and zombie fans, but most of all, a superior addition to the genre that respectfully and faithfully adherer's to the template set out by zombie maestro George A. Romero over five decades ago.

Stars: *** Review: A three-person space mission suddenly becomes four when the crew discover an unconscious stowaway, but too late to turn back to Earth, the flustered stowaway has no choice but to accompany the trained astronauts throughout their journey, however, when an unforeseeable incident leaves only enough oxygen for three people, it puts the crew in a moral quandary and a fight for their lives.

Human expendability drives the core of this claustrophobic and immersive slow burning space drama that for the most part holds interest throughout as the steady build to its conclusion, a well made and visually stimulating adventure that seems to draw heavily from the universal space movie handbook, yet it make no apologies about any feelings of déjà vu, and for the most part with competence and success without flaw.

Stars Anna Kendrick, Tony Colletts Daniel Day Kim and Sharmier Anderson each deliver convincing performances with understanding, humour, empathy and believability, and are aided by superb set design and special effects as they ultimately reach out to the deep depths of space in their unexpected fight for survival, Co-Writer/Director: Joe Penna, whose previous credit includes the gripping 2018 survival tale "Arctic" with Mads Mikkelsen, has created a moody another atmospheric survival tale, an intimate yet at the same time an epic journey that is the total antithesis of such sci-fi fare as "Star Wars," "Star Trek" or "Alien," to name a few, relying solely on the human drama, and proves beyond doubt that journeys into space can be equally gripping without the aid of aliens, extraterrestrial creatures and space battles to make an unworldly thrill ride.

Rourke’s Reviews First Love ■ (MA). 110 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

Initially set for theatrical release March last year, Takashi Miike's (Audition, 13 Assassins) energetic, highly entertaining action/comedy/ romance thankfully receives a much-deserved big screen release, and is a crazed, often hilarious cross between Martin Scorsese's After Hours (1985) and Kenji Uchida's Stranger Of Mine (2005).

A budding romance between Reo (Masataka Kubota) and Monika (Sakurako Konishi) is put to the test, as they inadvertently become involved with warring gangsters and corrupt cops over a very memorable night.

Miike plays out the outlandish scenario with skilled precision, and there are standout performances from Shota Sometani and Becky.

Deliver Us From Evil ■ (MA). 108 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

Despite a number of familiar plot elements, this is an effectively dour, expertly crafted action/thriller that shows two anti-heroes fighting each other over very different views on what the true meaning of family is.

Hwang Jung-min plays Innam, an ex-NIS agent-turned assassin who has just completed his Tokyo-located final mission before retiring to the beaches of Panama.

In Thailand, In-nam's former lover is murdered after their young daughter Yoo-min (Park So-yi) is abducted.

Hearing the tragic news, In-nam travels to Thailand to find Yoomin, and to also investigate who killed her mother.

Unfortunately, the brother of the vicious yakuza In-nam recently assassinated, appropriately called Ray The Butcher (Lee Jung-Jae), has also arrived on the scene, wanting to exact bloody revenge.

Helping In-nam is transsexual Yoo-yi (Park Jung-min), a Korean ex-pat who has never encountered carnage like this in her life.

While the basic storyline plays to formula, the particular aspect which intrigued me most was seeing two men, both with dark pasts, interpreting through conflicting eyes, the primary reason which they feel justifies the inordinate amount of death and destruction they create.

While violent, writer/director Hong Won-chan (whose directorial debut, Office, was moody, absorbing, but uneven) presents quite a bit of the brutality around the edge of the frame or completely

offscreen (similar to Fernando Meirelles' underrated 2008 film, Blindness), but this is still not recommended for the squeamish.

Hwang (The Spy Gone North, The Wailing) and Lee (Assassination, The Thieves) offer convincing, deliberately opposed performances, successfully re-teaming after appearing together in the marvellous 2013 gangster drama, New World.

There is also excellent work from Park (The King, Psychokinesis) as Yoo-yi, which won him the Korean Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor this year.

Production values are exceptional. While there is too much in the plotting which prevents it from being truly original, and its slowburn pacing and quiet stretches will annoy diehard action fans, Deliver Us From Evil has a fascinating theme at its core, and combined with strong acting and first-rate action, is intriguing enough to provide solid entertainment.

Hopefully the extended Final Cut (running 114 minutes) will turn up soon after.

Oxygen ■ (M). 101 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Alexandre Aja, whose body of work as a director has been variable at best, delivers his best film since High Tension (2003), the knockout horror/thriller that put him on the cinematic map.

The less you know about the plot the better, suffice to say that Elizabeth (Melanie Laurent) wakes up in a medical chamber, and has to figure out how she got there and why, before her dwindling oxygen supply runs out.

Although Aja's visual clues gives away some plot turns way too early, there is still much fun to be had, and this works better than the disappointing Ryan Reynolds film, Buried (2010).

Despite its one location setting, the film is slick and well-paced, zipping by quickly, indicating that the film-makers have successfully drawn the viewer in. Laurent does well in her confined setting, while Mathieu Amalric is perfectly cast as the voice of the A.I. central computer, M.I.L.O. The interaction between Elizabeth and M.I.L.O certainly reminded me of Donald Cammel's classic 1977 film, Demon Seed.

Set in Rose’s new house in a retirement village the two-hander play explores the story of a complex and unfiltered mother/daughter relationship, during a time when a mother’s inhibitions are being compromised by her decline into dementia.

Although their bond isn’t close, the daughter finds herself in a challenging position trying to care for her.

Directed by Julian Dibley-Hall and starring Jules Allen and Iris Walshe-Howling, Betty is Allen’s fourth play after her very successful 2019 work Slipped Through the Cracks where she was described

by Australian playwright Hannie Rayson as 'a playwright with enormous potential'.

Starring alongside Allen in this production is multi-awarding winning actor and director, Iris WalsheHowling.

Active in the Melbourne independent theatre scene since the late sixties when she was an ensemble member of La Mama Company, Iris has worked with numerous companies including as a founding ensemble member of The Contemporary Performance Centre, actor with Crow's Bar Cabaret, performer with Australian Theatre

Equal billing for Tiara classic ■ Class galloper Savatiano and Tofane share equal billing for the Tattersalls Tiara to be run at Eagle Farm on June 26.

Savatiano is coming off an unplaced run in the Kingsford-Smith Cup over 1300 metres, where she finished well back, but had no luck in the run.

Prepared by top mentor James Cummings, the mare as we know is better than that and will bounce back.

Tofane, from the Mike Moroney camp in Victoria, ran a good second to Emerald Kingdom in the BRC Sprint, over 1350 metres, back on May 22. On her day she is smart.

On the next line is the Golden Slipper winner last year, in Funstar, prepared by one of the best in Chris Waller, and always gives of her best. You can't leave her out, especially at the odds of $10.

Next is the John Thompson trained Sydney mare, Sweet Deal, who ran a good second behind Exhilirates in the Helen Coughlan Stakes over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm, at her last outing.

The Queensland mare, Outback Barbie, always gives of her best for the Tony Gollan camp, and despite missing the place, she is always a chance in something like this.

Last year's One Thousand Guineas winner, Odeum, prepared by the combination of Mick Price and Mick Kent at Caulfield, is smart and the duo certainly know what it is all about.

She is very good on her day, at $13.

One that impressed me also, was the smart Nudge, who won the Magic Millions National classic for the mares over 1600 metres back on June 5.

In the powerful Chris Waller stable she will be right in this at the big odds of $14.

Then you have the good Victorian mare, Brooklyn Hustle, who won the Proud Miss Stakes over 1200 metres at Morphettvile, back on May 15.

She is a mare with Jason Warren and Dean Krongeld at Mornington, and has a bit of class about her. Like all races the barrier draw will play a big part in proceedings.

Congrats. Gary ■ With a half-century of devotion to the thoroughbred industry, and to one family, has earned Gary Fennessy of Lindsay Park, the supreme accolade in the 2021 Australian Stud and Stable Staff Awards.

An assistant trainer with the Lindsay Park team in Melbourne, Fennessy received top votes in the Dedication to Racing Category of the Awards, and was also named the winner of the overall Thoroughbred Excellence Award.

Joining Fennessy on the winner's list at the staging of the SSSA was David Hanratty from Yarradale Stud in Western Australia, who took out the Leadership Award.

Radecker, who overcame severe injuries that ended her riding career, did not stop her from continuing to work with thoroughbreds.

Radecker was named winner of the Horsemanship Award.

In the Dedication to Breeding category, Steve Brien, the former Stud Manager at Twin Hills Stud, in NSW, was rewarded for dedicating his life to the business he loves, in the Thoroughbred Care and Welfare category.

In the Administration and Ancillary Services section, Cassandra Simmonds of Magic Millions, renowned as the best "can do" problem solver in the business, received well-deserved recognition.

While so many of those nominated, have given decades to the industry, the SSSA also recognises those who are just starting out.

In that category was Jack Cripps, who works for trainers, Tony and Calvin McEvoy in Melbourne.

For Gary Fennessy, known throughout the Industry as ‘Bim’, the Dedication to Racing and the Thoroughbred Excellence Awards are recognition not only for his 54 years of devotion to one employer, but to his value to the team he works with, and to the industry.

After beginning his working life with Lindsay Park's founder Colin Hayes in Melbourne in 1967, Fennessy is now working with a third generation of the Hayes family at Flemington.

The runner-up to Gary was John Brady, a strapper, stablehand, exercise rider, and just about everything there is in a racing stable, John has done it all.

Brady, 84, started with the legendary late Tommy Smith, before Tulloch Lodge became that name.

And after almost 70 years, he remains an employee of Smith's daughter, Gai Waterhouse, and her training partner, Andrew Bott. I have known Gary Fennessy for many years, a top man all round, in racing and out.

Well done, Gary, well deserved.
