■ Local government areas in eastern and south-east Melbourne, representing two million residents, have joined to call for urgent action to end homelessness. The Councils yesterday (Tues.) formed a collective to press for more social housing for the region’s most vulnerable community members. The local councils are Casey, Cardinia, Frankston, Greater Dandenong, Knox, Kingston, Manningham, Monash, Maroondah, Mornington Peninsula, Whitehorse, Yarra Ranges, plus Bayside. “A safe home is fundamental for recovery and safety,” said Cr Stuart James, Mayor of Monash. “Everyone deserves to have a roof over their head, a door they can lock and a place where they feel secure and safe. A place to call home. This is a fundamental and basic right.” The councils say that homelessness is more likely to affect those most vulnerable including women and children fleeing family violence, people with a disability, people living with a mental health condition, people living in poverty, and marginalised groups. The councils intend to work with State and Federal Governments.
