● Professor Brett Sutton, Chief Health Officer

As at Monday (Aug. 26), 430 people have ■ CORONAVIRUS cases continue to died from coronavirus in Victoria. grow in Melbourne’s East. In Yarra Ranges there are 237 cases (71 active). Monash has 259 confirmed cases (45 active). Boroondara has 250 cases (41). There are 183 (18) cases in Whitehorse. Manningham has 162 cases (28). The Knox tally is 148 (24). Maroondah, 102 (18). Nearby, Casey has 868 cases (167). Banyule has 433 (53). Inner-city Yarra has 427 (59). Greater Dandenong has 418 (12). Stonnington has 244 (22). Cardinia has 176 (30) cases.

Victoria recorded 116 new cases of Coronavirus in the 24 hours to Monday (Aug. 24), with the total number of cases now at 18,330. The overall total increased by 99 due to 17 cases being reclassified largely due to duplication. The current Stage 4 restrictions are nominally due for review on September 13. Premier Daniel Andrews hinted this week that the State of Emergency/State of Disaster could last for much longer than hoped.

■ Whitehorse Council is wary about the the South Eastern Advanced Waste Processing procurement project, facilitated by the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group. The project is for the processing of municipal waste for up to 16 south-east suburban councils using advanced waste and resource recovery technology. Detailed planning for the complex twoyear four-stage procurement project commenced early last year. Whitehorse Council, at its meeting on Monday night (Aug. 24) was reminded that it resolved in May last year to participate on a non-committal basis in the first two stages of the project, an Expression of Interest phase followed by an outline solution tender stage. The project timing and tender stages have changed as a result of significant delays, initially because the State Government put the project on hold awaiting the release of its new Recycling Victoria Policy - circular economy plan, and most recently due to COVID 19 impacts on waste industry tenders. The revised tender arrangements were listed in a report prepared for Whitehorse City Councillors.

Sassafras plans at Council ■ A controversial private request to rezone the land at 361-365 Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Sassafras from the Green Wedge A Zone to the Commercial 1 Zone (C1Z) was due to go before Yarra Ranges Council last night (Tues.) as The Local Paper went to press. Earlier this year, the Council resolved to seek the appointment of an independent panel to consider submissions to the Planning Scheme Amendment. The Country Fire Authority raised concerns about the proposal’s capacity to manage and mitigate bushfire risk. The poposal relates to six shipping containers housing a tourist information/booking office (office), artist’s studio/shop (retail premises), nursery (retail premises) and storage. The site has contained a plant nursery for more than 50 years
