■ VICTORIA is in a ‘State of Disaster’ with the Coronavirus death toll standing at 136, as at Monday. Stage 4 restrictions have come into effect across Melbourne this week, with an 8pm-5am curfew, and people ordered to stay at home. From 11.59pm tonight (Wed.), nonessential businesses will be closed for at least six weeks.
Retail, manufacturing and some office work will close under the restrictions. Key retails stores will switch to online only. These include Bunnings, K-Mart, JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, Myer, David Jones, Target and Big W. Businesses to stay open include supermarkets and grocery shops, bottle shops, convenience stores and newsagents, cafes and restaurants (take away and delivery only), petrol stations, banks, pharmacies, post offices, hardware, building and garden supplies for trade, locksmiths, electricity, gas and water providers, vehicle repair and maintenance, stationery services (business only), disability and health equipment, maternity supplies. Shopping centres will be open, but there will be access to only some stores. Trades people will be able to continue working for emergency and safety. Construction of critgical infrastructure will be permitted. Community based medical services will be allowed, if there is a referral from a registered medical practitioner. “We have to make this work,” MrAndrews said. “Because we’re, at best, uncertain what the next steps would be.
