RANGES VIRUS TALLY GROWS TO 36 ■ THERE are now nine active cases of Coronavirus in the Yarra Ranges, compared to four last week.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton announced on Monday (July 20) that there had been 36 confirmed cases within the municipality.

The tally in neighbouring local government areas is grim: ■ Casey 213, 78, ■ Cardinia, 44, 17, ■ Knox, 40, 12, ■ Maroondah, 29, 12, ■ Murrindindi, 2, 0.

Ongoing crime at C’side Park

■ Local Police report there is ongoing crime at Chrinside Park and Lilydale.

Between Jul 8-20 there has been ongoing overnight crime occurring in the Country Club / Cloverlea Estate of Chirnside Park and the residential area east of Victoria Rd. This incldues theft from motor vehicles, theft of motor vehicle, and residential burglaries.

As at Monday (July 22), Victoria had recorded 275 new cases in 24 hours. The total number of cases was 5942.

Within Victoria, 28 of the enw cases were linked to outbreaks or complex cases.

To date, 39 people have died in Victoria.

Grants for clubs

Launching Place decision overturned

■ A Yarra Ranges Shire decision has been set aside by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

VCAT member Tracy Watson allowed the application of Mr C. Vermaas and Ms S. Symonds who wish to construct a dwelling at 2045 Don Rd, Launching Place.

The proposal is for the use and development of a single storey dwelling, centrally located on the subject site with front and rear setbacks of 229 metres and 207 metres respectively.

The Yarra River corridor is located directly to the east of the subject site.

In August last year, the Yarra Ranges Shire Council issued a refusal to grant a permit for the proposal. Grounds of refusal related solely to the flooding impacts.

A Thornton-Rubicon local is making enquiries about possibly standing for the Eildon Ward seat on Murrindindi Shire Council, currently held by Cr Jackie Ashe. The elections are due to be held in less than 100 days, in October. CrAshe has held the seat for four days, and now is in partnership at the Alexandra Hotel, as well as entertaining thoughts of additional tertiary study.

There is a misprint in the recommendation to be put to Murrindindi Councillors tonight about music being allowed at the Tanglewood Festival. The recommendation says music can be played between 3pm-Midnight on January 30. It should read December 30.

Eight objections have been submitted to Murrindindi Council about the proposed Tanglewood Festival. The maximum number of people onsite has been increased from 800 to 3000. A meeting of parties was held on June 30 with several of the objectors, the applicant, council officers and councillors. No objections were withdrawn after this meeting.

Local Briefs No to $40K refund

He replaced Simon Overland who received a substantial undisclosed payout after being sacked by the Council. Earlier CEOs included Michael Wootten and the late David Turnbull. In 2017, Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green spoke about the sacking of Michael Wootten: ““I understand that this (sacking) was without warning and that Mr Wootten was almost frogmarched from the building.”

Fuel contract

■ An an error in email notification by ProcurementAustralia, meant that Murrindindi Shire Council was not notified about fuel contract negotiations until the end of April.

A previous five-year contract, which started in 2015, expired on March 30.

The Council is likely tonight (Wed.) to approve a contract for Council’s fleet and plant fuel, oil and lubricant fluids purchases commencing immediately, and ending on March 31, 2023 with the option for a further two individual one year extensions for a total contract value of $1,320,000.

● Donald Atkinson also known as Donald Stewart ■ Melbourne’s northern suburbs have been asked for information about Donald Atkinson, also known as Donald Stewart.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate the 36-year-old who is wanted on warrant for failing to appear at court to answer criminal damage and weapons offences.

He s approximately 175cm tall with a medium build and black hair. Atkinson is also missing his left arm.

Police have released an image of Atkinson in the hope someone may have information on his current whereabouts.

Atkinson is known to frequent East Gippsland and Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

Lights at Broadford ■ The Broadford sporting community was looking forward to officially ‘flicking the switch’ on four newly installed 30-metre high light towers at Harley Hammond Reserve Oval this month.

Due to the new Stay at Home restrictions, this has been delayed to a later date.

Each tower houses four LED lamps that can be set to 50 lux for training and 100 lux for competition.

These are the compliant standards for Australian Rules football at a local level. A feature of the installation is that it has the capacity to be upgraded to 150 lux in the future.

The improved lighting provides more even visibility across the ground which improves safety for participants and the condition of the ground, allowing more sections of the oval to be utilised for training.

This is in addition to the oval being reconstructed in 2017, which provided a new playing surface, irrigation and drainage.

These upgrades have greatly improved the quality of the oval and have increased the oval’s carrying capacity.

The LED fittings provide a clearer and more direct light disbursement, limiting the light spillage outside of the playing surface area of the oval. LED fittings are more energy efficient and have a longer operational life that is cost efficient and user friendly.

Local sporting groups at Harley Hammond Reserve that use the oval include: Broadford Football Netball Club Broadford Junior Football Netball Club Broadford Auskick Broadford Cricket Club The lighting upgrade cost $297,000 and was fully funded by Mitchell Shire Council.

“The Committee of Management and the local sporting clubs are extremely grateful to Mitchell Shire Council for installing the new lights. The old ones were past their use-by date," said John Paterson, Committee Secretary.

"It's terrific to have these new lights which make Harley Hammond Oval look like the MCG. It's a shame that COVID has stopped us from using them this straight away."

Mitchell Shire Mayor Cr David Lowe said: “The new lighting upgrade allows the local sporting community to train in a safer environment, while also helping to maintain the condition of the oval.”

Bell tolls at church ■ The bell at St John’s Anglican Church, Alexandra, tolled seven times at 11am, 11.30am and 12 Noon on Sunday (July 19).

This was because it was seven yearssince asylum seekers were incarcerated in on Manus Island, Christmas Island and Nauru.

Murrindindi fatal ■ Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash which occurred in Murrindindi on Thursday afternoon (July 16).

Investigators believe a Nissan sedan was travelling along Murrindindi Rd about 5.15pm when the driver lost control of the car.

The car left the road and crashed into a tree. The driver, believed to be a man in his 60s died at the scene.

Yea Markets postponed ■ COVID-19 has claimed another victim - but hopefully only temporarily.

Yea Railway Market organisers announced this week that their monthly event will not proceed for the time being. The popular attraction is usually held on the first Saturday of the month.

The Coronavirus restrictions stopped the Market occurring in April, May and June, and the Saturday market occurred earlier this month when there was optimism that the COVIOD-19 situation was easing.

“It is with regret, that the Yea Railway Market will be closed until further notice,” started the social media announcement.

“We have been in consultation with the Shire and are in agreement that the market should not go ahead.

“We will be in close contact with the relevant departments and will advise further.

“Again apologies for not having a Market, but given the current climate (COVID-19) we feel it would not be prudent to proceed,” said the statement.

Local Briefs Hi-tech TAFE at Lilydale

■ Students and residents in Lilydale are a step closer to having a world-class construction training centre, with work on the project under way, thanks to the Victorian Government.

Gayle Tierney, Minister for Training and Skills, last week attended a virtual event to celebrate the sod turning that marks the start of construction on the $10.2 million Integrated Centre for Sustainable Construction Technologies at Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside Campus.

May Constructions has been appointed to build the centre, a modern industrial facility fitted with the latest technology needed to deliver cutting-edge carpentry, electrical and plumbing apprenticeship training.

This includes an emphasis on sustainable construction practices and technologies, providing students with industry-current skills and a clear pathway to the jobs of the future in the construction industry.

The centre will provide the region with a range of training opportunities and address key skills and training gaps in Melbourne’s outer east.

The centre will include ultra-modern workshops, classrooms, material storage facilities, staff workplaces and general amenities. The centre is expected to open in early 2021.

Since 2015, the Victorian Government has committed more than $1.5 billion to rebuild our TAFE system and ensure students can get the skills they need for the jobs they want.

“This centre will help give Victorians – particularly those hit hard by the pandemic – the skills they need to secure high-quality jobs, said Ms Tierney.

Fight to change the name of Yea ■ In an era where country town reports in daily newspapers appeared alphabetically, Yea often missed out being in print if the paragraphs about other towns were too lengthy.

In the 1910s, Major Frederick George Purcell, Editor of the Yea newspaper, campaigned to change the town name.

The original name for the district had been Muddy Creek.

A letter writer to The Argus in November, 1894, explained: “Sir,-In The Argus of today you give the origin of the name ‘Muddy Creek’to the Yea River.

“Parhaps you will kindly accept a little information on the subject from an old subscriber.

“Hovell in his journey from Sydney to Port Phillip came to a creek at a point where crossing appeared impossible.

“It was not wide but running strong and deep, with steep banks on both sides. He rode down to its junction with the Goulburn, say, three miles “He rode upwards for some miles still the same steep banks and soft mud at the bottom.

“The only place he could see a little gravel was where the present bridge is at Yea. “He cut down the banks at each side, crossed and named the creek ‘the Muddy’, because of its mud.

“The gold discoveries in the neighbourhood are of a comparatively recent date.”

A letter writer to the Yea newspaper in 1912, calling themselves ‘Yeaite of the Sixties’said: “I was pleased to see in last issue of the Chironicle, one at least coming forward in defence of the old time name of our township.

“1 am surprised at Major Purcell being not aware of our township's historical significance, more especilly as it was named after a brave and distinguished soldier.

“The major's ohjection to the name because of its position on alphabetical list making it as he says, more dillicult to get local news into the metropolitan papers, is it to use a

Another letter writer, going by the name of ‘Nay’, submitted: “Having followed the subject pretty closely since it was first mooted at the Progress Association meeting, and having read most of the arguments put forward as the reason why the name of the township should not be changed, I confess that I have not been impressed.

“We have been made acquainted with the reasons why the name of a celebrated soldier should be perpetuated.

“That is right enough even tbough he was one of the Bulldog breed that made old England’s fame.

“That does not describe our township. To think that one of the prettiest townships in the State should be named like a Quaker's affirmation.

“Besides we have the River Yea to perpetuate the memory; indeed it lends itself fairly well to rythm “By gentle Yea's meandering streams, In musing mood I often rove.

“That does not go badly, but the name applied to a township - and such a pretty township - seems out of place.

“Give it a nice sounding name,

some thing that will give the place a quality, indicate its situation, or its products.

“I am aware that this is not always done, still it need not prevent it being done now. “:The reasons already advanced for the change seems to me to be very strong, and to the point.”

Major Purcell did not have much to say in favour of the man after whom the town was named.

“I say that Col. Yea never did anything that entitled him to be immortalised. “ True nobility is derived from virtue, not from birth, and I will take a paragraph or two from his biography as published and I think the average reader will agree with me that Colonel Yea was not a noble character, and therefore has no particular claim to be immortalised: "This was largely due to Yea's personal exertions; his dark eyes yielded fire, and all the while from his deep chisselled merciless lips pealed the thunder of imprecation and command. He showed no mercy and cursed his men freely, while they were sacrificing their lives. Is there anything ennobling or elevating in such conduct. Sounds more like a tyrant than a noble character.”

Change names of Councillors not the town: reader ■ Sir-Having read a great deal in your paper of late re the changing the name of "Yea" I beg space to make a few suggestions. Since the name of Peter Snodgrass has been brought into the piece I might mention that when he first landed in Yea there was a large lagoon between the Post Office and the Bowling Green stretching from near the town pump in a circular fashion over to the side of Mr Buckland's shop.

On this a same lagoon were to be seen a few Blacks (Natives) paddling in canoes. 'What a lovely town it would be if that lake were still there and lighted up with the long expected Electric Light.

Well I am not going to suggest that the town be called after the first arrival, as we have a street called after him. This was practically his route through the spot where Yea now stands. Nor yet do I intend to suggest King Billy or Samba after any of the original blacks that paddled on this lake in the very early days although F. G. P. seems to admire some of the black's names, when naming some of the beauties around Yea. There are also some nice names and picturesque spots in this direction such as Kerrisdale, Strath Creek, Flowerdale, Glenfernand Break o' day But alas whatever the Progress Association thinks, the Council evidently thinks the King Parrot Road should keep its name and "place" independent of all these nice surrounding names But what I do intend to suggest is that you first change the names of some of the Councillors. I will not suggest which ones but there are some we must keep if we are to get Electric Light.

Well we must keep Cr Quinlan as it does not seem honourable to me to put him off. The Bible says honor thy Mother and Father etc and it is now he is the Father of the Council ... Keep a Drysdale because he is 'bonnie'.

What The Papers Say Kilmore film star

■ For 11-year-old Kilmore boy Roman Moser, meeting entertainment superstars Paul Hogan and Shane Jacobson was a highlight of his role in the movie The Very Excellent Mr Dundee.

The Australian comedy, scheduled to premiere in April but cancelled due to COVID19 restrictions, will stream on Amazon Prime [this month].

The film stars Mr Hogan as a fictional version as himself, who reluctantly thrown back into the spotlight as he attempts to restore his reputation before being knighted.

The plot is a mix of chaos, car chases, and comedy.

For young actor Roman, it was a ‘firsttime experience’ and a highlight of his career.

Wurundjeri names

■ Manningham Mayor Cr Paul McLeish says his Council is disappointed that the timeframe given by the former Minister for Local Government didn’t allow the Council enough time to engage the Wurundjeri Land Council on names for Manningham’s new wards.

“In the future Council would like to engage further with the Wurundjeri Land Council to consider appropriate, permanent Indigenous names to be put forward to the current Minister for consideration.”

0% rate increase

■ Strathbogie Shire councillors have voted unanimously to not impose a 1.9 per cent rate rise for residents and instead freeze rates as part of the Council's budget.

It comes after many in the community petitioned the council over the proposed rate rise, citing strenuous economic conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of the 91 submissions to the draft budget, around 60 per cent were concerned with the proposed rate rise.

Homes are clear

■ Two Healesville aged care homes that recorded COVID-19 cases earlier this month have now successfully tested all residents and workers, with no further positive cases.

Both Aurrum Aged Care and Holmwood Aged Care were listed as having confirmed COVID-19 cases on July 8.

Since then, 100 per cent of staff and residents have been tested at both sites, all returning negative results.

Play space revamp

■ Broadford residents have an opportunity to help design two new play spaces for the town. Mitchell Shire Council announced it was seeking input to help finalise the design of the play spaces, which will be located at Memorial Park in High S and behind the Broadford Living and Learning Centre, youth centre and skate park.

Council has already consulted several Broadford community groups to help draft designs. The memorial park play space is set to include play equipment, shade sails, a picnic table and fencing.

Extend stimulus package: Council ■ Yarra Ranges Council is urging the Federal Government to extend its JobSeeker and JobKeeper programs past September, amidst growing concerns for the longer term social and economic impacts of COVID-19 on local communities.

“Whilst we welcome the Federal Government’s recent $2.5 billion announcement around investment in the JobTrainer stimulus program, and see the benefits for our community, particularly our young people, we still believe a tailored approach to JobKeeper and JobSeeker is required,” said a Council statement.

“Recent predictions of a -14 per cent contraction in the Yarra Ranges economy and concerns about future employment opportunities for young people were painting a grim picture, particularly given the second phase of Stage 3 lockdowns currently being experienced by the Melbourne metropolitan area and Mitchell Shire.”

Yarra Ranges Mayor Cr Richard Higginssaid Council feared a devastating financial and social crisis for Yarra Ranges and other municipalities for the foreseeable future if the current economic stimulus measures did not continue.

“There’s no doubt the Federal Government’s stimulus packages including JobKeeper and JobSeeker have helped many businesses stay afloat and keep their staff employed, while also providing a lifeline to many other people who have found themselves unemployed as a result of the pandemic,” Cr Higgins said.

“In the grip of a second wave of the pandemic, and the subsequent six-week lockdown period we are currently experiencing it is going to be very difficult for many businesses and people to recover from this if the current financial stimulus packages do not continue.”

Cr Higgins said Yarra Ranges Council had recently undertaken a number of studies and outreach activities to gain a better understanding of the short and long-term impacts of both COVID19 and the associated lockdown restrictions.

“Some of the key findings of this work are startling, particularly the expected -14 per cent contraction in Yarra Ranges’ economy, and a forecast 20.5 per cent decrease in Yarra Ranges’ Gross Regional product, which equates to a loss of around $1.35 billion,” he said.

“COVID-19 is having a crippling effect on many industries especially those in tourism.

While typically we would welcome around 6.6 million visitors each year to the Yarra Ranges, we are not likely to see those numbers again for some time to come.”

Cr Higgins said Council also had significant concerns around future employment opportunities for the 17.6 per cent of young adults aged 15-24 currently engaged in the Yarra Ranges workforce.

“We recently undertook a survey of young adults that identified 49 per cent of respondents had lost their jobs as a result of COVID-19.”

Trespass case

■ At the County Court held in Seymour last week, J. Colwell, jun, of Glenburn, sought to recover from R. Cassell £50 damages, special damages 53 bags chaff £26 10s, balance general damages for trespass and breaking in.

The defendant (R. Cassell) lodged a counter claim for £17 for rent due 1st May, which plaintiff did not dispute.

Mr T Caples appeared for Colwell and Mr. J. G Macdonald for Cassell.

Judge Monte, in giving his decision, said there was no breaking in, but there was technical trespass, for which he awarded £1 damages with £2/2 costs.

The judge held that Cassell was entitled to the chaff under an agreement, entered into between the two parties, the plaintiff being the lessee, and the defendant the owner, of the land , occupied Colwell.

On the counter claim, judgment. was. entered for Cassell, who was awarded £17 with. £5 5s costs, the two verdicts and two sets of costs to be set off against one another.

The result is that Colwell has to pay Cassell £16 and £3 3s costs.

The agreement provded that Cassell was to get one bag in seven of the crop, but Cassell put in a defence that prior to the agreement being executed Colwell asked him to accept only one quarter's rent in advance, instead of half a year (as the agreement provided), which Cassell agreed to con.ditionally on his being allowed a fixed quantity of 3 tons of chaff instead of one bag in seven.

It was proved that only one quarter's rent was paid in advance, and when plaintiff put in a receipt for the first quarter's rent, the judge said it corroborated Cassell's version and he would allow the defence,

Time to check alarms ■ Murrindindi Shire Council is supporting the CFA's Residential Fire Safety Campaign and wants to remind residents that smoke alarms can save their life in the event of a house fire.

Boys entertain

■ On Saturday and Monday, the 7th and 8th August, the Box Hill Boys will give a performance in the Shire hall.

These boys have the reputation of being a highly trained combination, their pyramid building and drills, in which they have been scientifically trained by Captain Williams, an accomplished physical eulturist, alone being worth travelling miles to witness.

They are also an accomplished brass band. The company consists of 26 boys and two leaders, Captain Slattery is in charge.

The proceeds are in aid of the missionary work of the Salvation Army.

■ For the sake of the Yea Co-Operative Store, I am pleased to know that the direetors have discovered that they are merely temporary, and not permanent officials. But if steps had not been taken by me and other shareholdere to cause them to make inquiries as to their true position much legal expense would have been incurred, and probably the oompany forced into liquidation before business operations had well starled.

■ People were much alarmed on Friday, shortly after 6 p.m., when the fire bell rang out an alarm of fire. As no signs of fire was visible, all sorts of conjectures were made as to its location. The wise ones said it was at the Waterworks engine shed at the pumping station. Others said it was at the freezing works., It turned out thatthere was no fire at all.

Observations Open House goes online

■ Melbourne’s doors may currently be closed, but Open House Melbourne’s doors are open now more than ever before – in a virtual sense.

The annual initiative that encourages appreciation for architecture, design and history has taken its traditional weekend of open days online in 2020, with six weeks of virtual tours through some of the city’s most wellknown buildings, including some of Hobsons Bay’s interesting spaces.

From now until August 31 there will be events and talks, including a Q&A with local Modscape founder Jan Gyrn at 11am on Saturday (July 25), as well as tours of some of the west’s best architecture, including: the Victorian era Williamstown Town Hall; Federation style The Substation gallery; and contemporary gems like Williamstown Library and the Australian Islamic Centre designed

by Pritzker Architecture Prize–winning architect Glenn Murcutt and Islamic architect Hakan Elevli.

Open House Melbourne is an independent organisation that has been operating an annual program since 2008.

In The Name of Theatre ■ Our local theatre columnist, Cheryl Threadgold, is self-publishing a new book - In the Name of Theatre: the History, Culture and Voices of Amateur Theatre in Victoria - in September.

A history component forms the first part of the 354-page book.

Part One includes the history of amateur theatre in Victoria, commencing in New South Wales in 1788, condensed from an award-winning PhD thesis.

● Cliff Peel ■ Now that all Melbourne and some of regional Victoria is in lockdown with nowhere to go, the thought of travelling somewhere, anywhere, is more than usually enticing.

Perhaps you are dreaming of travelling by watching endless train discovery programs on television, keeping company with Michael Portillo or Tony Robinson.

But in Melbourne is another inveterate traveller, retired journalist Cliff Peel, who has been an adventurer all his life and he has taken to print to share his travel adventures with us.

So while we can't go anywhere at the moment, we can take a journey with Cliff by reading his new book, Yarns of a Traveller.

As Cliff relates, a yarn is a colloquial Australian word for a story or a chat, and these travel yarns have been collected over the past 70 years.

Cliff visits places near and far, and regales us with his experiences while he grappled with local customs, foreign languages and the vagaries of public transport around the world.

He says you won't find stories like these in travel brochures, as they cover unusual adventures, quirky incidents and strange characters.

So what inspired this young octogenarian to take to print?

"During the years I've often talked to people in an informal manner about the various adventures that happened in my travels and someone said 'why don't you put it in a book?' so I did," Cliff said.

"Once I saw all the photos and notes I have, my memory was stirred into action. I'm just sitting down, chatting, as though I'm sitting at a table with a glass of wine or beer and telling you little things that happened to me over my travels.

“Sometimes they are amusing, sometimes they are testing or a bit personal, but they are just little stories that people can relate to if they have been travelling.

“And if they haven't been travelling, they can imagine what might happen to them, and discover what fun it is to travel!" Cliff said.

On a personal note, Cliff was a kind and avuncular afternoon chief of staff on this naïve cadet journalist's first day in the ABC newsroom, 40 years ago.

Cliff taught me so many fundamentals of journalism that have stayed with me, so it's rather fun to now write about my former boss, knowing that he can't change my copy.

Linden New Art Linden New Art 30 Years: First held in 1990. Linden New Art's iconic Linden Postcard Show continues to provide artists from all walks of life the opportunity to present their artwork inside the gallery' striking Victorian-era building nestled in the heart of St Kilda. The call for entries opened to the public on July 14, with a deadline of August 25. The exhibition is scheduled to run from October 24 to January 31.

The gallery has big plans to celebrate its 30th birthday milestone as it looks back n the exhibitions vibrant history. This year's show will include a special selection of artworks by an illustrious group of Linden Postcard Show alumni, which includes the likes of John Campbell,AbdulAbdullah, Penny Byrne and many more.

The much-loved exhibition is open-entry and attracts artists from across Australia showcasing thousands of small artworks from a diverse range of artists, from emerging to established.

Since 1990, art-lovers and art collectors alike have been able to buy a mini-masterpiece from the show and support a living artist.

Melb. Jazz Festival ■ Jazz and contemporary music enthusiasts can enjoy the final installment of These Digital Times – an online music festival series featuring local and international artists presented by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Following the success of the May and June series, the next These Digital Times program on Saturday, July 25, will be live-streamed via the MIJF website direct to YouTube from 11.30am to 10.30pm.

Hadley Agrez, MIJF CEO said, “Live music remains impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, especially in Melbourne and also across the globe. Our adapted program continues to support artists to perform via a virtual broadcast to audiences around the world.”

An international duo headlining the July series features long-time collaborators at the cutting edge of the next generation of jazz – Taylor McFerrin (keyboards and beatboxer) and Marcus Gilmore (drums), who will present a split-screen set recorded in lockdown separately from their respective homes.

From Italy, the genre-crossing music created

by Vince Abbracciante and his accordion is moody, ethereal and gripping as he dives deep into psychedelic jazz music.

These Digital Times continues to create opportunities for Melbourne-based musicians, including Paul Grabowsky, who will perform a rare solo piano set revisiting his 2014 released album, Solo.

Award-winning drummer, David Jones will be joined by his friends Stephen Magnusson (guitar) and Evri Evripidou (six-string bass and effects) in an exploration of new musical territory; while improvising flutist, Erica Tucceri, will perform her latest project Vacilando with a stunning cinematic backdrop created by a live video artist.

As part of this year’s MIJF Take Note program, saxophonist Holly Moore will debut a new commission with her sextet. Initiated in 2019, the MIJF Take Note program celebrates emerging female and gender diverse leaders in jazz.

For children and families, the Junkadelic Brass Band will lead a workshop in DIY musicmaking; and for those working in the music and creative industries, there will be a panel conversation about the funding landscape and a roundtable discussion focused on career pathways for emerging artists.

These Digital Times will culminate in the premiere of new material from Barney McAll’s forthcoming album, Precious Energy. It will be a wild ride of psychedelic jazz, electronica and improvisation featuring McAll on piano, Rita Satch and Belle Bangard on vocals, Julien Wilson on tenor saxophone and a rhythm section that includes Hiatus Kaiyote’s Paul Bender alongside Leigh Fisher on drums.

Following each monthly These Digital Times editions, concerts are available on the MIJF website. The program has included music and workshops for kids and families; career development panels for artists and industry; as well as performances from emerging artists and some of the big names in Australian and international jazz and contemporary music.

The first two series in May and June have been viewed over 22,500 times across Australia, North America, Asia, the United Kingdom, Europe and South America.

■ Arts Centre Melbourne in partnership with Melbourne Fringe returns to present the fourth year of the Take Over! commission with a new approach.

The Take Over! program has commissioned 10 artists/companies to make unique works which will be developed online and presented during Melbourne Fringe 2020.

The Take Over! program supports independent, visionary artists to push their creative boundaries. This year, they have been asked to develop a work that will include a two-week at-home residency culminating in a final event during Melbourne Fringe in November, which could be performed live or online.

“We received a staggering 94 applications for this project from Victorian independent artists – bold, courageous and inspiring ideas from many of our leading performance makers,” says Arts Centre Melbourne Creative Producer, Theatre and Contemporary Performance, Daniel Clarke.

“Reflecting on the artists that have been selected I am excited by the breadth of life experience that the 2020 Take Over! artists bring to the program,” From July to September, the two-week online residencies will be a chance for the artists to explore and connect with their audiences during their creative developments.

Practising within a Coronavirus landscape – this new-found way of working – will be a crucial part to their artistic process and realising the outcomes of the work.

“Spanning dance, theatre, spoken word, music, live art and installation we asked artists to consider their relationship with their audience, both online and in real life.

“I’m confident that this year’s Take Over! will result in many new works being created, works that capture a moment in time and ignite the imaginations of both our artists and audiences,” says Clarke.

At the beginning of each residency, the artists will introduce themselves and give a short introduction to the work they will be developing. By the end of the fortnight, the artists will engage with their audiences online; opening their creative process through streaming their content – all of which will be live captioned. Then, come November, all commissioned works will be presented together as part of a one-off durational event during Melbourne Fringe. Details for this to be announced in due course.

Ken Done - Paintings you probably haven't seen.

Features a selection of paintings executed between 2000 and 2017 largely from the artist's private collection.

As such, many of these works reflect Ken's personal relationships with those closest to him, for example the large Judy canvas and the four quirky dog portraits and his immediate surroundings, primary his home on Sydney's Chinaman's Beach.

All of the paintings reveal Ken's love of colour and life.

Exhibition opens July 25 and runs until October 25.

Indian Film Festival

■ The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne has announced that four of India’s most popular and prolific filmmakers will work with selected Victorian filmmaking teams to mentor and then shoot short films on the themes of Race, Disability, Sexuality and Gender.

The shorts will be compiled into one film entitled My Melbourne which will premiere at IFFM 2021 before travelling on the international film circuit.

The four film makers are Kabir Khan (Kabul Express, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Tiger Zinda Hai, 83), Rima Das (Bulbul Can Sing, Village Rockstars), Onir (My Brother Nikhil, I am) and Imtiaz Ali (Jab We Met, Rockstar, Jab Harry Met Sejal).

IFFM Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said: “This exciting initiative gives Victorian screen practitioners a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with some of the world’s best film makers and also develop relationships with them.

“I am delighted and thrilled that IFFM has secured four of India’s most diverse voices of independent cinema for these workshops and the creation of four short films on the core values of IFFM – diversity and inclusivity.”

The Festival is now calling for authentic migrant experience story ideas. Each of the four selected teams will be assigned a budget to create an original script, striving for creativity, originality and pure storytelling.

Kabir Khan, Imtiaz Ali, Rima Das and Onir will workshop and develop the selected stories and oversee pre-production with the teams via zoom.

Should travel restrictions be lifted, the four filmmakers will travel to Melbourne to shoot the films. For this short film initiative, IFFM has partnered with Blackmagic Design.

Rima Das said, “It’s an honour to receive this invitation. It’s essential for filmmakers to examine the world around them from the prism of its socio-political context. The short film will allow us to bring in authentic livedin stories that often get lost in popular culture.”

Kabir Khan says, “Celebration of our diversity is a dialogue that should be fostered in current times. In the post-pandemic world, being one with each other in a community should be the single most important takeaway.

The virus has shown us the futility of everything else. I am excited at the opportunity presented by IFFM and looking forward to the experience.”

Imtiaz Ali adds, “The last few months have been full of life lessons for all of us. Viewing stories of identity in the context of the diverse society that we are all a part of is quintessential for us to chart our path ahead. I am looking forward to meeting a new set of people and understanding their life stories for the screen.”

51 years ago, man walked on the moon ■ Hi everyone, from my suite at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites comes this week's news.

Neil, Buzz make history

■ Fifty years ago, on July 20, 1969, millions of people sat riveted to their television screens to watch the first humans land on the moon.

The ghostly, black-and-white footage showed US astronaut Neil Armstrong stepping off the ‘Eagle’ landing module onto the moon's surface, followed by fellow astronaut Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin Jr. Armstrong's first words have become as historic as those images of his first steps: He described the moon's surface as fine-grained, "almost like powder”. The lunar landscape, he said, was beautiful.

"It has a stark beauty all its own. It's like much of the high desert of the United States," he said. "It's different, but it's very pretty out here."

The two astronauts took photographs and collected rock samples. They left behind a US flag, scientific instruments, and a commemorative plaque reading: "We came in peace for all mankind."

Armstrong and Aldrin stayed a total of 21 hours on the moon, 2½ of them outside the ‘Eagle’ lander.

After spending the night on the moon, they lifted off to rejoin their fellow crew member Michael Collins in the orbiting Columbia command and service modules, which safely brought them back to Earth on July 24.

Armstrong and Aldrin were the first of 12 astronauts, all US citizens, to walk on the moon. The last, Eugene Cerman, left the moon in December 1972 as part of the Apollo 17 mission.

The historic 1969 landing was a huge victory for the United States, which had been engaged in a fierce space race with the Soviet Union.

Moscow had already launched the first satellite into orbit and put the first man, Yury Gagarin, in space.

The World has gone mad ■ The child birthing information web portal likely received a spike in traffic after it posted a new list of suggested "woke" terminology to be used when speaking about the birth of a baby.

Suggesting a switch to more "gender-inclusive" language sparked considerable mocking on social media.

For example, the mother should now be referred to as a "birthing person" and the act formerly known as breastfeeding should be called "chest feeding."

"Part of its mission, though, is to make the childbirth experience less-gendered, and in order to do that, you need to use less-gendered language.

For example, instead of 'mother,' use 'birthing person.'" via Twitchy.com. We get it. The farthest edges of the liberal Left side of our world is intent on eliminating all gender references.

Wrong way, go back ■ A Minneapolis community, just a few miles away from where George Floyd died while in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department, pledged to "check its privilege," allowing hundreds of transients and homeless individuals to take up residents on their front lawns and pledging not to call the police to handle incidents of drug abuse and mental illness. Now that same town's residents are concerned things have gotten out of hand. Crime is rampant and the homeless encampment now has more than 300 people. Powderhorn Park residents, mostly left-leaning white women, were instrumental in declaring their town a "safe zone" for the underprivileged and pressing the town's residents to agree to a pact not to call the police or other public safety resources if they felt threatened. After all, their opposition to crimes, including property damage and theft, was born of white privilege.

The new Coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can be found in the feces of infected people, and this finding suggests it could be transmitted through the use of toilets, according to the authors.

The study was published June 16 in the journal Physics of Fluids. "One can foresee that the velocity of upward-flowing aerosol particles will be even higher when a toilet is used frequently, such as in the case of a family toilet during a busy time or a public toilet serving a densely populated area."

■ A Harvard graduate is blaming supporters of President Donald Trump after being fired from her "dream job" at financial services and consulting firm Deloitte LLP after she made a "threat" against individuals who say "All Lives Matter" instead of "Black Lives Matter."

Claira Janover posted a video to TikTok several days ago, and in it, she used a poorly crafted metaphor to explain the difference between "All Lives Matter" and "Black Lives Matter" a metaphor that read, to some on social media, as a direct threat of violence.

Janover complained about "the nerve, the sheer entitled Caucasity to say 'All Lives Matter'" and talked about "stabbing" as a way of demonstrating the difference between "All Lives Matter" and "Black Lives Matter."

"I'ma stab you," Janover says in the video, zooming in on her face. "I'ma stab you, and while you're struggling and bleeding out, I'm a show you my paper cut and say, 'My cut matters, too.'" She says the "stabbing" bit was meant to be an analogy, according to the New York Post, but the diatribe cost her her job, regardless.

"Standing up for Black Lives Matter put me in a place online to be seen by millions of people," Janover said in a new video posted to TikTok Wednesday. "The job that I'd worked really hard to get and meant a lot to me has called me and fired me because of everything. During the video, Janover gestured to what appears to be a page from the company's website and noted that she was axed 'even though they claim to stand against systematic bias, racism, and unequal treatment,'" per the post. Her now-former employer, Deloitte, has not made a statement in regards to Janover's dismissal, but Janover suggests she was targeted by "Trump supporters" who simply did not want to hear her message.

■ Phyllis Diller is unstoppable. This clever American comedienne is still active at the age of 95.

Phyllis started out as a pianist, got married, raised a family and re-invented herself as a comic, bringing joy and laughter to millions of fans for more than 50 fifty years.

Phyllis Ada Driver was born in Lima, Ohio in 1917 and was an only child. At primary school and college Phyllis practised her comedy on her fellow students.

After graduating from college in 1935 she attended Chicago's Sherwood Music Conservatory hoping to become a concert pianist. She went to University where she met Sherwood Diller and they married in 1939.

Their first child was born in 1940. Whilst raising an increasing family (Phyllis had six children) she worked as an advertising copywriter and continuity writer at a radio station.

During the evenings Phyllis appeared at amateur engagements as a ‘stand up’ comedienne.

She was a contestant on the television quiz show You Bet Your Life, hosted by Groucho Marx. Phyllis said in later life that she was petrified.

When Groucho asked her if she was married Phyllis replied "Yes, I've worn a wedding ring for 18 years now."

To which Groucho snapped, "Really, oh well, two more payments and it'll be all yours."

This led to appearances on many of the popular television shows and her fame spread internationally.

She became a good friend of Bob Hope and appeared on his television shows.

Her film credits included Splendor In The Grass, The Fat Spy, Boy Did I Get The Wrong Number, Eight On The Lam and The Sunshine Boys.

Here are some examples of some of her great one-liners I never made Who's Who but I'm featured in What's That.

● Phyllis Diller If I were a building - I'd be condemned.

At night everything either comes off or out.

In the early 1960s she toured in stage productions such as Dark At The Top of the Stairs, Wonderful Town and Happy Birthday.

In 1965 Phyllis divorced her husband and a month later married Warde Donovan, the marriage lasted for 10 years.

In 1970 she played Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly on Broadway and surprised the critics with her fine singing voice.

Phyllis toured Australia many times and appeared on television shows. She was a regular on The Don Lane Show and was a special guest on the very last show in 1983.

Phyllis underwent plastic surgery for the first time at the age of 55 and used it in her comedy routines along with references to her husband ‘Fang’.

In 1999 Phyllis suffered a heart attack and had a pacemaker fitted.

She announced her official retirement in 2002.

Several months ago Phyllis attended a Blue Ribbon Holiday Party at the famous Bel Air Hotel and is in good health.

Phyllis Diller did not get into showbusiness till her mid thirties and made the world laugh with her zany comedy.

You just had to look at her in her wigs and outlandish costumes and she would make you laugh - one of the great ‘stand up’ comics of our time.

Original 3MP was launched in 1976 and financed by a quorum of cashed up radio-TV personalities. Breakfast will be hosted by Jon Vertigan and Julie Strini.

Vale Ken Shadie

■ Sydney script writer Ken Shadie died last week. The boy from Bondi rose from panel operator at a radio station to being nominated for an Oscar in 1983 for his work on the iconic Crocodile Dundee. Shadie also wrote for a string of Oz TV comedies including The Mavis Bramston Show, Number 96 , Paul Hogan Show and heaps more rib tickling sitcoms. Crocodile Dundee grossed $ 47,707.045 at the box office. The writing team was Paul Hogan, John ’Strop’ Cornell and Shadie .

Odd move by Seven

■ Over the years Seven has travelled a rocky road when it comes to current affairs. Their latest venture is weird. It’s called Seven News Spotlight and it commences late July.

Why I consider it weird is that Spotlight has no regular night to appear it will bob up in prime time any night between Sunday to Wednesday. That’s the sort of programming they do with ’fillers’ . Viewers want continuity.

Stars: **½ Review: Biographical drama of Professor James Murray, who begins work compiling words for the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in 1879, throughout which he receives over 10,000 entries submitted from a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, Dr. William Minor.

Based on the book "The Surgeon of Crowthorne: A Tale of Murder, Madness and the Love of Words" by Simon Winchester, this is fascinating true-fife story on the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary is a solid effort, a beautifully filmed journey that holds interest throughout due to the performances of the two leads, most notably Mel Gibson as Professor James Murray, but only just. as it lacks a more coherent narrative and emotional depth and drive.

Co-written by acclaimed Oscar nominated writer-director John Boorman (Deliverance, Excalibur, Hope & Glory), and beginning as a personal project for Mel Gibson, who worked on adapting the book for over 20 years before production began, and who originally intended to direct, here he shines throughout with bursts of momentary spark as he attacks the monumental task ahead, however, as compelling and foreboding as he can be, it is Sean Penn as the doctor undergoing treatment at the Lunatic Asylum who all too continuously gives the film an overwhelmingly unevenness and heavyhandedness.

19th Century period detail, costume design and production design all excel, along with a stellar supporting cast that includes Jennifer Ehle, Natalie Dormer, Jeremy Irvine, Eddie Marsan and Steve Coogan, all at the top of their game, but sadly, following constant legal battles from beginning production in 2016 and now disavowed by Mel Gibson, first time feature director Farhad Safinia (credited here as P.B. Sherman), has created a n bitterly empty and ultimately unfulfilling experience in what should have been the cinematic equivalent of a real page turner, but ultimately remains a closed book.

Lee Marvin gives a shattering, standout performance in his first big screen starring role as the volatile no-nonsense hit man, and is matched scene for scene by Clu Gulager as his menacing partner, along with the beautiful Angie Dickinson as the femme-fatale, John Cassavetes as the intended victim and future President Ronald Reagan in his final big screen role as the ruthless crime boss.

Rourke’s Reviews Relic ■ (M). 89 minutes. Now streaming on Stan.

Again showing that genre filmmaking can provide the ideal framework to explore real-world social and personal issues, Relic is an immensely focused, smartly executed piece whose topic will resonate with many viewers who have had to deal with its overwhelming ramifications.

Kay (Emily Mortimer) and her grown daughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) arrive at the former's country family home when she receives a call saying that her mother, Edna (Robyn Nevin), has gone missing.

A police search ensues, and while all Kay and Sam can do is wait and hope, they see that Edna's house is falling into disrepair, but also notice that the doors have newly added locks on them.

When Edna suddenly reappears, Kay dismisses her behaviour as the onset of dementia, but as their stay lengthens, it appears there is something else in the house.

Co-writer/director Natalie Erika James makes an extraordinary feature film debut, intelligently mixing horror and drama (filled with symbolism) to often riveting effect.

James creates an oppressive atmosphere (at times reminiscent of films such as Hideo Nakata's Dark Water and Tony Scott's The Hunger), but never forgets the human anguish behind it, and has been blessed with three perfectly cast actors, all of whom deliver firstclass work.

Technically the film is also impressive. Relic is a real shot-in-thearm for the Australian film industry (and is a more sustained effort than Jennifer Kent's acclaimed The Babadook), and I can't wait to see what James does next.

Greyhound ■ (M). 91 minutes. Now streaming on Apple TV+.

Despite an abundance of authentic technical detail, this adaptation of C.S. Forester's 1955 novel is ultimately underwhelming, almost solely due to a Tom Hanks screenplay that is sorely lacking in character depth and at least a modicum of back story.

The story, set in 1942, centres on Captain Krause (Tom Hanks), a veteran officer who is given command of a destroyer for the first time, where his mission will be to escort 37 convoy ships across the North Atlantic.

The most dangerous part of Krause's assignment will be to protect the supply ships for around the fifty hours where they won't have air support.

Those dangers become a reality when the convoy comes under attack by the notorious German UBoat unit known as The Wolf Pack.

The absence of character detail is obvious from the start, (blink and you'll miss Elisabeth Shue; Stephen Graham is criminally wasted), and seriously hampers any opportunity to become emotionally invested in proceedings.

As a lean, adrenaline-pumping thriller, Greyhound also falters, as Hanks' script is repetitive, basically serving up the same attack scenario again and again, with no well-defined characters to thread it together into a compelling whole.

Director Aaron Schneider, who hasn't helmed a film since the underrated Get Low in 2009, tries to keep everything as low-key and realistic as possible, an approach which not only partially suppresses Hanks' tendency to dip into Saving Private Ryan style sentimentalism and old-fashioned patriotism, but allows him to craft some effective sequences.

Greyhound aims to be concise and minimalist, but Hanks hasn't chosen his words carefully, leaving viewers more aware of nautical jargon, rather than creating a fascinating insight into the courageous people who spoke it.

Just watch Dick Powell's 1957 classic The Enemy Below instead.

Japan Sinks ■ (MA). 10 episodes. Now streaming on Netflix.

World-renowned animator Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, Ride Your Wave) teams up with Pyeongang Ho (School-Live!, Sword Art Online) to bring the third adaptation of Sakyo Komatsu's best-selling novel to the screen, and while very different from the 1973 and 2006 live-action feature films, it is both unpredictable and engrossing.

The Japanese public are shocked by a series of horrendous earthquakes, and as we mainly see the events unfold through the eyes of one family, it is discovered that the entire country will end up under water.

The series is dour, grim and sad, but superbly balances the best and worst of human nature, and concludes in genuinely moving fashion.

Have some Ladera, my dear

■ John Rozentals salutes an inspired piece of Clare Valley vineyard establishment and finds himself saying 'Have some Ladera, my dear'.

These days just about every winemaker seems to be spruiking access to tempranillo and the Spanish red variety is the in-vogue flavour.

Just 15 or so years ago it wasn't like that and the Clare Valley's Tim Adams was an Australian pioneer with the variety.

Adams already thought he was too old to bother with experiments but considered the valley a natural match for the variety's Riojan homeland.

If the variety had done well there it should do okay where he came from, just outside of the town of Clare to the north of Adelaide, so he took the plunge and planted a substantial vineyard of the variety.

So convinced of the success of his move was he that he took an exploratory trip to Spain to meet the winemakers and taste wines in Rioja.

There Tim met Isaac Muga, of the noted winemaking dynasty.

Isaac agreed to work with Tim in Clare for vintage 2004.

That year Tim had planted planted 6.5 hectares of tempranillo on a dry-grown site to the east of his winery.

He named this unique site 'Ladera', Spanish for 'slope' or 'hillside', as it had a very valuable and

beautiful steep easterly aspect.

When Isaac took his first steps in the new vineyard he said "Ah Ladera".

The name stuck and the rest is history.

Tim Adams 2014 Schaefer Shiraz ($40): This is a good, grippy full-bodied dry red and I like it. The vineyard was established by the Schaefer family in the 1980s and subsequently purchased by Tim Adams and his wife Pam Goldsack, who obviously know their Clare grapes well.

It's a richly flavoured wine with ample dark-berry flavours and plumminess. Try it with roast beef of just about any persuasion.

WINE OF THE WEEK Tim Adams 2016 Ladera Tempranillo ($40): Like the

Schaefer Shiraz, this dry red is par of theAdams' 'Single-Vineyard' series of wines.

Small berries have led to intense flavous in this savoury number which is remarkably juicy and has a decided streak of cinnamon.

The wine has at least a decade's future in the cellar but, if you mus try it now, do it the favour of matching it with high-quality roast lamb complete with trimmings.
