AFFAIR WITH STAFFER: GREENS AXE LOCAL MP

■ Prahran MLA Sam Hibbins has been stood down as Victorian Greens Co-Deputy Leader after he admitted to having a consensual sexual relationship with a staffer. Hibbins released a statement on Friday (Nov.1), saying that the short relationship ended “some time ago”, admitting that it breached party rules. Greens leader Ellen Sandell learned of the affair on Tuesday last week (Oct. 29), but did not make the announcement about the Hibbins expulsion until four days later. She said a party meeting was called at 7pm on Tuesday night, but there was a delay because she could not meet with the staffer until Thursday (Oct. 31). Ms Sandell said she was “angry”: “It is too often that women are the ones picking up the pieces. The premier has had to do it. I’m doing it here today.” Mr Hibbins, who is married with two children, issued a statement, says he will sit on the crossbench of State Parliament. “"I recognise this was a significant error of judgement and understand the distress this has caused," Mr Hibbins said. "This short relationship ended some time ago, but it does breach our party room rules. “"I deeply regret what has happened. I have made a very human mistake, but I am working to find the best way forward.” In an ABC interview, Mr Hibbins said: “"I accept the error in judgement in having a consensual relationship. I refute any suggestion beyond this, that has come after the relationship has broken down.” Hibbins, who is married with two children, said the relationship was “a significant error of judgment” and he understood “the distress this has caused”. “I accept the consequences of my decisions that affect my personal and professional lives.

● Sam Hibbins, Prahran MLA “I am working to make amends to the most important people in my life, my family and our community,” he said. Ms Sandell said: “The Member for Prahran has completely lost my trust, and the trust of his Greens colleagues, the Member for Prahran will never be welcome back in our party room. "I don't think that he meets the standards of behaviour expected of any MP." Ms Sandell said she discovered Mr Hibbins’ hevaiour after a notification from the Department of Parliamentary Services. Ms Sandell said Hibbins resigned from the party room this week after MPs suspended him. She said she had also requested his resignation as a Greens member, which he provided.
