Local News Death at Glen Iris

■ Police will prepare a report for the coroner after a pedestrian was hit by a car in Glen Iris. Emergency services were called to reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian at the intersection of High St and Malvern Rd about 3.55pm on August 1. The pedestrian, a 79-year-old Armadale man, was transported to hospital at the time of the incident but has since died. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 56-year-old woman, was not injured.

COUNCIL RESPONDS TO BURKE RD PLANS

■ Port Phillip Council has collected more than 2000 vapes as part of a recycling trial. Rechargeable and disposable vapes contain three main types of waste – e-waste, including batteries and circuit boards, toxic liquids and plastics. The Council says that its vape recycling trial has allowed residents to dispose of vapes safely while saving minerals like lithium from landfill.

■ City of Boroondara Mayor Cr Lisa Hollingsworth says her Council is deeply concerned with the latest Camberwell Junction ctivity Centre housing plans released by the State Government. The Allan Labor Government’s draft plans feature two areas proposed to accommodate taller buildings and larger developments - an Activity Centre zone and a new “catchment area”. This is an 800m expansion from the proposed activity centre boundary. “The Activity Centre zone proposed is the same as that reflected in Council’s adopted Camberwell Junction Structure and Place Plan, which was developed based on extensive research and consultation with the community,” said Cr Hollingsworth. “ Council is supportive of this activity centre area. What Council is not supportive of is the additional ‘catchment area’ that extends a further 800m from the boundary of the centre and will allow for development height up to dix storeys in heritage areas and low scale single dwelling leafy neighbourhoods. “Neither Council nor the community have been consulted on this alarming new catchment area, which is illogical and representative of poor planning.” Cr Hollingworth said that the catchment area encompasses 4500 heritage listed properties. It is estimated that approximately 48 per cent of this catchment area is land currently protected by the Heritage Overla. “ Council does not support this catchment area in any way and condemns the State Government’s disregard for local heritage and amenity. This catchment area has been imposed with no evidence of any strategic analysis, assessment of local infrastructure capacity or consideration of the impact on local services and community facilities,” the Mayor said.

● Cr Lisa Hollingworth, Mayor, City of Boroondara “Any claims by the Minister for Planning that they have undertaken consultation with Council on the latest version of their plans are completely false. Council only obtained a copy of the latest plans via the state government’s website on Thursday, August 22, after media releases and announcements were made by the Minister,” Cr Hollingsworth said.

Thousands more homes at Chaddy, Camberwell Junc.

● Jacinta Allan, State Premier ■ Chadstone and Camberwell Junction will two of 10 key centres across Melbourne to provide fast-tracked ‘activity centres’. Under the pilot program, long and complicated ‘structure planning’ in the activity centres will be fast-tracked from up to five years in some cases, down to around 12 months – delivering more homes faster. “Under the draft plans, height rules and boundaries differ to suit each area. Generally, the commercial cores of the activity centres are proposed to accommodate taller buildings and larger developments,” said a Government representative. “In Camberwell Junction, the proposed maximum height at the core will increase from six to 12 storeys.” New rules will encourage more townhouses and apartments ranging from three to six storeys in height. These 10 centres were chosen for their potential to host more homes close to trains, trams, shopping centres, jobs and services. “The Camberwell Junction area is well suited for more homes. The Labor Government has upgraded Camberwell High School, Camberwell Primary School, and more,” said Ms Allan’s representative.
