City News Shared e-scooters axed from Melb.
● Cr Nick Reece, Lord Mayor ■ City of Melbourne Councillors voted 6-4 last week to end the use shared e-scooters in the next 30 days. Lord Mayor Cr Nick Reece said: “Safety remains our number one priority. While the Victorian Government's shared e-scooter scheme has been popular in Melbourne, there have also been serious issues.” “The safety of Melburnians is being constantly jeopardised by riders doing the wrong thing – riding on footpaths, double-dinking, riding without helmets and riding under the influence. “E-scooters are thrown across our footpaths, parks and public spaces – creating trip hazards.” “Residents, visitors and traders have had enough.” “There have been more than two years of ongoing trials with providers under the Victorian Government. “That is more than enough time to make necessary improvements, but we have not seen results. Councillors have decided it’s time to call an end to this trial." “We will continue to encourage our community to take up active forms of transport. “Private e-scooters are still permitted in the City of Melbourne, and we still have the extensive share scheme e-bikes. People who ride free up space on our roads and public transport for Melburnians and visitors who choose these options.” The City of Melbourne has participated in the Victorian Government’s shared escooter trial since February 2022 – in partnership with the City of Port Phillip and City of Yarra.

WAIT LIST BLOWOUT
■ “Massive explosions” have taken place in the waiting lists for Box Hill Hospital and Monash, Clayton, according to David Davis, Southern Metropolitan MLC. In comments directed at Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas, Mr Davis said: “ The Government has been secretive about this, and Ms Crozier has been trying to get information – very secretive about this. “What I am asking the Government to do is release the statements of priorities for Eastern Health, Alfred Health and Monash Health in my area. These are the hospitals that serve my electorate, and the minister should immediately release these statements of priorities, which lay out the funding and the requirements in terms of outputs by the health services. “The fact that the government has not released these is shameful. It is a cover-up, and I think people are entitled to know the truth,” Mr Davis told the Legislative Council last week.

■ AFL legend Anthony Kotoufides, 51, has declared that he is a candidate to become Lord Mayor of Melbourne at Council elections to be held in October. Liberal identity Gladys Liu will stand as his Deputy. ‘Kouta’, who played 278 games for Carlton, is understood to be standing on a ticket in which Intaj Khan, a colourful former Wyndham councillor will be associated. Mr Kotoufides has described Melbourne City Council as being in “utter crisis”. Other candidates for the Lord Mayor’s position appear to be recent incumbent Cr Nick Reece, former Deputy Lord Mayor Arron Wood, Labor’s Phil Reed, the Greens’ Roxane Ingleton, veteran businessman Gary Morgan and current councillor Jamal Hakim. The Liberal Party is expected to nominate a candidate. Nominations will be open from September 9-17. A postal vote will be conducted, closing at 6pm, Friday, October 25.
■ Police are appealing for witnesses following two sexually motivated incidents in Clayton earlier this month. Detectives have been told, during the first incident, the victim was on the 733-bus, travelling from Monash University to Clayton Railway Station, when she was sexually assaulted on Sunday, August 4, shortly before 4pm. The victim, who was unable to move due to the crowd on the bus, became visibly upset before witnesses intervened and came to her aid. The male offender, who was seated in the rear seat of the bus, is believed to have also engaged in sexually inappropriate conversations with other passengers. The same man is reported to have approached a teenager when he got off the bus at Clayton Railway Station and made sexually inappropriate comments. Witnesses have again stepped in and helped the victim who was left shaken and visibly upset. Detectives have made a number of enquiries in relation to the incidents and have identified a person of interest. The man is currently in a correctional facility in relation to other matters. As part of the investigation police are now appealing for further information and assistance from commuters who may have been on the busor in the vicinity of the railway station at the time. The bus was crowded, after leaving the university with an influx of passengers following an Open Day, as such there were several people in close proximity to the incidents. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incidents or who may have engaged with the man to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log onto www.crimestoppersvic. com.au
