Teens raid Camberwell home

This year’s winner of the $15,000 Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize ma jor prize is Louise Tate for her allegorical oil painting, Self Portrait with Strawflower (2023), which was chosen from the works of 38 finalists and 420 entries. The Melbourne-based artist said her work “draws on women’s history of self-portraiture, the brevity of time and life, and where I fit into that picture.” Louise lives near the Yarra River and the re-emergence of strawflowers after flooding, inspired her to explore the ideas around nature and its lifecycle. The $3000 Local Art Prize was awarded to Lorna Quinn for her evocative landscape painting, Like an Oyster (2022).

Port Phillip residents have been experiending some disruptions to kerbside mixed recycling bin collections due to a driver shortage. “If your mixed recycling bins haven’t been emptied, please leave them out for collection and we will empty them within 72 hours. Thank you for your patience,” said a Port Phillip Council representative.

Graffiti busters

■ Volunteer group Graffiti Busters says it is going from strength to strength.

Graffiti Busters co-ordinator Geoff Bransbury said the success of the initiativeconducted at the group’s discretion pending property owner approval, according to strict rules and standards - is infectious at a community level.

"While the removal of graffiti on private property is a private matter, we've been quite successful in liaising with property owners in getting their permission to remove the graffiti, and we've never, ever been rejected.”

The group was originally conceived with Council support as a trial program and established in Beaumaris in 2018, as part of Neighbourhood Watch 3193

Drag event axed

■ City of Port Phillip CEO Chris Carroll said a live drag story-telling event at St Kilda Library this month was changed to an online event due to security considerations.

“Due to the security and safety concerns, and to avoid any disruption and distress to young participants and their families, staff and other library users, we will not be holding this event in person,” Mr Carroll said.

■ Three teenagers were arrested on Tuesday last week (June 13) after a string of crimes. They have been charged with a number of offences.

A 15-year-old teen from Springvale South has been charged with:

■ 2 x armed robbery

■ 2 x handle stolen goods

■ 2 x deal with the proceeds of crime

■ theft of motor vehicle

■ commit an indictable offence on bail.

A 13-year-old Doveton teen has been charged with:

■ robbery

■ theft of motor vehicle

■ 2 x handle stolen goods

■ 2 x deal with the proceeds of crime

■ commit indictable offence on bail.

A 16-year-old Cranbourne teen has been charged with:

■ theft of motor vehicle

■ x handle stolen goods

■ x deal with the proceeds of crime

■ commit indictable offence whilst on bail.

The trio have been remanded in custody to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

A group of up to six teenagers entered a fastfood restaurant on Whitehorse Rd in

Nunawading about 2.20am on Tuesday, June 13.

It is alleged they threatened staff with knives, stole cash and damaged the front window, before fleeing the scene in two vehicles.

The teenagers allegedly entered another fastfood restaurant on Burwood Hwy in Vermont South and threatened staff with weapons.

One of the vehicles was allegedly stolen during an aggravated burglary at a property on Fermanagh Rd in Camberwell on June 11.

Meanwhile, Police are continuing to investigate two aggravated burglaries overnight on June 11.

It is understood teenagers broke into a property on Fermanagh Rd in Camberwell and stole three vehicles.
