● Councils are providing temporary support for hospitals.

Local nurses to the rescue

■ Local Councils will now provide additional, temporary support to maternity and neonatal health services, following the Victorian Government's announcement of a Code Brown in hospitals across the state.

Council Maternal and Child Health nurses will support services impacted by the changes and help to relieve any additional pressure resulting from the pandemic.

The MCH nurses will assist in hospital birthing suites and with the Extended Post Natal Care Program — where a hospital Mid-

wife visits new babies once discharged.

The nurses, who are all also qualified Midwives, will head to Frankston Hospital and Monash Health, Clayton and Casey campuses for an initial six week period — ending Friday, March 11.

Families can continue to access a range of supports, including through the 24/7 Maternal and Child Health Line, GPs and SuperCare pharmacies.

Some MCH services and consultations may be paused or cancelled for older infants.

■ SIX inner-city councils have joined in a bid to tackle the scourge of graffiti.

The collaborative project, Urban Canvas, with Bayside, Boroondara, Glen Eira, Kingston, Port Phillip and Stonnington is part of the Inner South Metropolitan Mayors Forum.

The project will see new art created on and graffiti vandalism removed from Victorian Government and corporate third-party assets such as post boxes, tram stops and substations.

Usually, councils can’t remove graffiti or touch assets owned by the Victorian Government and third parties, such as utilities suppliers and transport providers.

Loop vision from Cl. ■ Green spaces and improved pedestrian connectivity are key features of alternative plans for the proposed Suburban Rail Loop sites at Highett and Heatherton developed by Kingston Council.

Kingston’s vision for the sites proposes integrated and enhanced design outcomes, including an underground pedestrian connection to Southland Station and Westfield Shopping Centre, plus a green roof over the train stabling yards at Heatherton.

Kingston’s advocacy to date has been to preserve the Delta site in Heatherton as core parkland for the Sandbelt Open Space - Chain of Parks Strategy, however, in the event this is not agreed to by the State Government, the Council is pursuing a detailed mitigation strategy.

Kingston Mayor Cr Steve Staikos said he hoped the plans, developed with community input every step of the way, would help the Victorian Government plan the Suburban Rail Loop.

● Kaushaliya Vaghela MLC ■ Western Metropolitan MLC Kaushaliya Vaghela made history last week after crossing the floor in State Parliament. It was the first time that this has been done since 1987.

Ms Vaghela took a stand against Premier Daniel Andrews. She voted to refer the party’s use of almost $400,000 in public funds during the 2014 election campaign back to the Ombudsman who in 2018 found the scandal was an “artifice” and “wrong”.

Ms Vaghela has not secured Labor preselection for the Upper House seat at this year’s November State Election.

She is part of the Adem Somyurek group which is working towards destabilsiing the Premier’s grip on Government.

Darebin doings

■ It’s the Premier vs Somyurek, and Daniel Andrews doesn’t intend losing.

There may be side effects at the City of Darebin, in Melbourne’s north.

Pro-Greens have control of the local Council, by doing a deal with Mayor Cr Lina Messina.

The deal was brokered by Somyurek interests, close to Preston MLA Robin Scott, who has also been denied pre-selection.

It’s bunker mentality at Darebin. CEO Sue Wilkinson is in bunker mentality, refusing to respond to local media enquiries. Political handbooks tell us how that ‘strategy’ ends.

Local Goverment Minister Shaun Leane is putting pressure on Darebin Council, and there is every chance that a Monitor will be appointed in this election year, in the same way it has been done at the neighbouring proGreens City of Yarra,

Dumb politics

■ What government would seek to put media proprietors in an election year.

The Daniel Andrews State Labor Parliament upset regional media operators by introducing legislation that stops the need for local Councils to advertise some public notices in local newspapers.

Those municipal ads are the lifeblood for many of the country newspapers that have been clinging for survival, especially during the past two pandemic years.

Needlessly upsetting local press before the polls is simply dumb politics.

■ State Parliament last week commenced for 2022, with a condolence session paying tribute to Robert ‘Robin’ FitzGerald Cooper, former Mornington MLA. He had attended Xavier College and later the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology before embarking on a cadetship at the Age newspaper. He then went on to a career in sales and marketing in the building supply sector, before his political career began.

Chase drama across South-East ● Police helped rescue a dolphin on Port Phillip Bay. Quick thinking police came to the rescue of a dolphin stranded in Port Phillip Bay. Water police were called just after 4pm on Monday last week (Feb. 7) to assist the animal, which had beached itself in shallow water. Marine animal experts from Melbourne Zoo's Marine Response Unit had requested police assistance, with two inflatable rescue boats carrying four officers deployed. A sling was made to tow the marooned mammal into deeper water, a fifth police member stationed on shore to watch over the rescue effort. Animal experts assessed the dolphin before it was successfully released, police saying for once this was one slippery customer they were pleased to see get away.

Leading Senior Constable Tony Christensen said: "It was a privilege to be involved in the rescue of such an amazing creature. Our members often see dolphins in the bay during patrols and it's great to see this one back where it belongs. We hope to cross paths again - but this time well away from shore."

■ Detectives from the Southern Metro Regional Crime Team arrested two men following a series of aggravated burglaries in Melbourne’s south east.

It is alleged the two 18-year-old Cranbourne men and an unknown offender attended an address in Scurry Drive, Croydon about 10.15am on Friday morning (Feb. 11).

The men entered the address through an open garage door before stealing a white Mazda CX9 and a blue Mazda 3 sedan Both Mazdas and a stolen black Audi Q5 wagon were spotted by uniformed Police driving erratically south along Canterbury Rd and Eastlink towards the south eastern suburbs.

The Police Air Wing were called and assisted officers on the ground.

The white Mazda CX9 came to a stop to Glasscocks Drive, Lyndhurst where the driver discarded the vehicle and was picked up by the driver of the black Audi Q5.

It is alleged the black Audi was stolen from a Chelsea address on February 9 with investigators linking the vehicle to other offending in Keysborough and Glen Waverley.

The vehicle was observed driving erratically west along Eastlink and through the Melbourne CBD before Police successfully intercepted the

An 18-year-old Cranbourne man and 18year-old Cranbourne North man were arrested and were assisting Police with their inquiries.

■ Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a burglary at a business in Clayton.

It is believed the offender(s) forced entry to the Fairbank Rd business between 12.30pm Saturday (Feb. 5) and 7.30am Monday morning (Feb. 7).

The offender(s) used a forklift belonging to the business to assist in the theft of 10 drums of solid bar copper.

The copper has an estimated value of approximately $80,000.

Investigators have released an illustrative image of the copper stolen.

IB exhibition

■ Detectives from Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit have charged two women following an alleged assault in Caulfield on Tuesday last week (Feb. 8).

Emergency services were called to a convenience store on Hawthorn Rd about 10.15am after reports a 52-year-old woman had been assaulted.

The woman was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Investigators arrested two 51-year-old women from Caulfield in relation to the matter.

They have been charged with recklessly cause serious injury and bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on May 19.

$80,000 copper theft

● Kaelin is missing Police are appealing for public as sistance to help locate missing 15year-old Kaelin. Kaelin was last seen in the Highett area on January 25.

Police have concerns for his welfare due to his age and the length of time he has been missing. Kaelin is approximately 180cm tall with a solid build, dark-coloured hair and brown eyes. He is known to frequent the Greater Dandenong, Casey and Melbourne CBD areas. Police have also released an image of Kaelin.

■ Homicide Squad detectives are investigating after a woman was located deceased at an address in Springvale on Thursday afternoon (Feb. 10).

Emergency services were called to a Glendale Rd property about 12.10pm after reports a woman was found deceased.

Police established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Pair charged

Arson at Patt’son Lakes ■ Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance following a fire in Patterson Lakes on Wednesday night (Feb. 9).

Investigators have been told the fire broke out at a shop on Thompson Rd around 11.35pm.

The offenders then left the scene in the vehicle.

Detectives have released images and CCTV of a silver 4WD utility with a canopy and two people who may be able to assist with their enquiries.

■ The State Government has launched the Yarra Strategic Plan – Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo — a landmark plan to protect the iconic Birrarung — the Yarra River.

The plan brings together 15 state and local agencies who all have a role in managing the Yarra River corridor. This collaborative approach is reflected in the name Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo – which means “what is good for the Yarra is good for all”.

Tram works on Swan St

■ Yarra Trams is working with Public Transport Victoria to carry out essential maintenance and renewal works on a section of tram line on Swan St this week.

The works will ensure a safe and reliable tram service well into the future.

Early works have begun on Swan St between Stawell St and Madden Grove.

Major works will be carried out until Saturday (Feb. 19).

■ Bicycle access in Port Melbourne just became a whole lot easier thanks to Port Phillip Council’s Garden City Bike Corridor upgrade.

The upgrade means Port Melbourne residents now have increased access to Garden City Reserve or can simply enjoy the views along their journey through Port

Local Theatre And She Would Stand Like This

■ And She Would Stand Like This takes Euripides’tragedy, The Trojan Women, and brilliantly re-imagines it in drag.

This is a luminous production with a terrific ensemble cast.

Hecuba (Kikki Temple) is drag mother to her chosen family, the ‘House of Hecuba’.

Her ‘children’, Grace (Mikki Daely), Miss Scott (Guillaume Gentil) and Baby (Peter Wood), make up the Greek chorus and prance, pose, and death drop down the fabulous runway that forms Karine Larché’s striking set.

Daely, Gentil and Wood bring glitter, fierceness, and pathos recounting their individual stories.

No one believes her when Cassandra (Celina Yuen) foresees a dark future full of fear.

Yet, soon after, the catwalk becomes a hospital waiting room.

The Greek herald, Talthybius (Jalen Ong), is now a doctor with the onerous task, having “drawn the short straw”, of delivering the mounting bad news of death and disease.

No news is good news, so the actors turn on the hapless messenger.

In playwright Harrison David Rivers’ version, the enemy is not the invading Greek army; the enemy is the mysterious plague, politics and the hospital CEO, Elena (Michele Perera).

Sound designer Olivia McKenna’s arresting soundscape, like an alien presence, regularly interrupts the action—a disrupter, just like the mysterious disease, compounding the grief.

“Have you ever noticed how a word begins to lose all meaning when it is said over and over again?” Hecuba says.

Immersed in another tragic, ever-evolving pandemic, the timing of this play is even more poignant.

Amazing that the bones of a play written over 2000 years ago can still have such resonance.

Ashley will use sketch comedy to display uncomfortably comical situations she worries she will one day encounter, dissecting the fear of judgement and disbelief about her conditions, how isolating it can be to know you're missing out on experiences and society's expectations that sick people must brand themselves with their conditions to feel deserving of help.

Monash Gallery of Art Old ways, new ways Monash Gallery ofArt April 2 – June 26 In an exhibition that draws together work by 11 artists, Old ways, new ways encompasses a range of approaches to photography taken by First Nations photographers to connect the past and the present, as well as one image by the non-indigenous Australian artist, Viva Gibb, that documents artists outside the 1991 exhibition, Pitcha mi Koorie.

Emma (Kate Cole) is a children’s author receiving a prestigious award. She brings her mother, Beth (Jillian Murray), with her and the interaction between these two has all the frustrating hallmarks we would find between mother and daughter.

But it is the unexpected arrival of Grace (Mia Tuco) that brings friction into the hotel room where the women are staying.

Katy Warner’s play sets the characters well; a tolerant daughter dealing with an eccentric and ageing mother and an overly apologetic interloper.

Kate, Jillian and Mia have much to work with here and the dialogue is delivered with alacrity.

Warner, however, overplays this character dimension a little at the expense of dramatic clarification.

Once the audience learns that Grace is actually Emma’s abandoned daughter, much is explained but this revelation comes as the apogee toward the end of the 110 minutes.

Were it known earlier, there would have been better opportunity to explore the guilt, remorse and reconciliation between the women. As it stands, the interactions become slightly repetitive.

Beth’s eccentricities start to become irritating. Emma’s disquiet over the fact that Grace is writing a book about her experience comes across as mean-spirited rather than something that will unravel her success.

The dramatic conceit is worth exploring but there is a tenuous balance that needs to be adjusted.

The interplay between the women is well paced and director, Sarah Goodes, has worked the limits of the stage well.

Red Stitch’s Ink program has, once again, enabled the potential of playwrights such as Warner to find a forum in which their works can be trialled and developed with the backing of actors and production teams that are some of the best in the profession. Observations A Woman’s Life and Love

● Coady Green and Antoinette Halloran ■ So classical music of the past few centuries has been by men, but a forthcoming concert will look at a famous work by Robert Schumann from a fascinating female perspective.

Starring one of Australia’s foremost sopranos Antoinette Halloran, with internationally acclaimed pianist Coady Green, A Woman’s Life and Love is at Hawthorn Arts Centre at 2.30pm on Sunday (Feb. 20).

The concert will feature Schumann’s much loved 1840 song cycle, Frauenliebe und Leben, and also One Life Stand, which is an exciting, contemporary reimagining of the story of life and love from a modern female perspective.

The second work is a collaboration between award winning British composer CherylFrances-Hoad and Hercule Poirot Mystery crime writer, Sophie Hannah.

Soprano Antoinette Halloran thinks that the pairing of these two song cycles is genius.

“Some of us who still love to sing the Schumann have copped some criticism as it not being a feminist piece, as it is written by men ... just because something is OLD doesn’t mean it is antiquated in its ideas, and a clever interpretation can work wonders on most texts.”

The poems that make up One Life Stand include such witty titles as The Pros and Cons and Rubbish at Adultery.

Pianist Coady Green says that this new cycle finds inspiration in Schumann's extraordinary music, but offers a contemporary, fresh and updated take on the text.

“Putting these two wonderful works sideby-side offers a kaleidoscopic musical experience, but also an interesting juxtaposition of two profoundly different texts from two very different eras," Coady says.

■ Glenn Dawson Wheatley was an Australian musician, talent manager and tour promoter and visionary.

Wheatley began his career as a musician in Brisbane in the mid-1960s. In the late 1960s he became known nationally as the bass player in the rock band, the Masters Apprentices, creating hits such as Because I Love You and Turn Up Your Radio.

Wheatley had then transitioned into management in the 1970s, managing The Little River Band who went on to enjoy consistent commercial success and top the charts in the US. Prior to his death, Wheatley and Farnham were in discussion about the release of one last record.

The Brisbane-born music legend had been a part of the industry for over 40 years and was known for managing high profile acts such as John Farnham and Delta Goodrem.

He also was a director of the first FM radio station in Australia. I was privileged to work with him at EON FM. He was a dear friend of everyone in the entertainment industry, he was one of the good guys. He will be sadly missed.

Sincere condolences to Glenn’s wife Gaynor and his children Tim, Kara and Samantha and the whole family.

More Fentanyl seized

■ For the first time in US history, more fentanyl than heroin has been intercepted by Federal law enforcement at the country’s borders.

According to US Customs and Border Protection data, 11,201 pounds of fentanyl was seized in fiscal year 2021, compared to 5400 pounds of heroin.

Other drugs seized include 319,447 pounds of marijuana, 190,861 pounds of methamphetamine, 97,638 pounds of cocaine, and 10,848 pounds of ketamine. 2,158 pounds of fentanyl has been seized in fiscal year 2022 to date, compared to 277 pounds of heroin.

The amount of heroin seized at the border decreased from 5763 pounds in 2020, while the amount of fentanyl seized has exploded from 4791 pounds in 2020.

“Not only were fentanyl seizures at the highest level ever recorded, but fentanyl overdoses within the United States also hit new highs, indicating the success that transnational criminal organisations had in pushing their deadly products to the public,” reported The Washington Examiner.

In December 2021, a DEA investigation identified a “direct link between fentanyl-related overdose deaths and criminal drug networks in Mexico.

“Mexican criminal drug networks are harnessing the perfect drug trafficking tool: social media applications that are available on every smartphone,” DEAAdministrator Anne Milgram said.

“They are using these platforms to flood our country with fentanyl. The ease with which drug dealers can operate on social media and other popular smartphone apps is fueling our Nation’s unprecedented overdose epidemic.”

Clinton donations fall

■ The Clinton Foundation is witnessing a rapid plummet in donations. According to the group’s most recent financial report, contributions fell from $29.6 million in 2019 to $16.3 million in 2020 – a 45 per cent decline amid COVID-19 and the lockdowninduced recession.

In 2016, when former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton,ran for president, the group raised $62.9 million, indicating an overall 74 pe rcent donation decline in a four-year period.

The Clinton Foundation works with “strategic partners to develop and implement programs that create economic opportunity, improve public health, and inspire civic engagement and service.”

Its programs relate to increasing crop yields, battling climate change, and providing relief after natural disasters.

The organisation, however, has often been accused of political motives and pay-to-play schemes. Last year, President Trump’s Department of Justice investigated how the FBI dealt with claims of such corruption at the Clinton Foundation.

■ A female passenger on a Delta Airlines flight stunned her fellow travelers and cabin crew when she was reportedly observed breastfeeding her pet cat and refused to stop.

The bizarre incident was said to have taken place on Delta Flight 1360 from Syracuse, New York, to Atlanta, Georgia.

The tale of the purportedly unhinged feline lover became public knowledge after a screenshot has gone viral on social media, showing a message that was transmitted by a Delta crew member to their colleagues on the ground in Atlanta, summoning assistance.

“This woman had one of those, like, hairless cats swaddled up in a blanket so it looked like a baby,” the flight attendant recounted.

“Her shirt was up and she was trying to get the cat to latch and she wouldn't put the cat back in the carrier. And the cat was screaming for its life.”

According to the airline's website, Delta “fully supports a woman's right to breastfeed on board Delta and Delta connection aircraft and in Delta facilities.”

It is unlikely that the airline's pro-lactation stance extends to human passengers nursing animals.

The airline allows small dogs, cats and household birds to travel in the cabin for a fee, but they must be kept in a pet carrier that fits under the seat.

■ The Biden administration is reportedly unclear of the whereabouts of 47,705 migrants.

Nearly half, or 47,705, of the more than 100,000 noncitizens who were released from Border Patrol custody at the southern border in 2021 between March 21 and August 31 and given instructions to self-report to Immigration and Customs Enforcement within 60 days have failed to check in, the DHS disclosed to Sen. Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican.

Before March 21, 2021, when an illegal immigrant was released by the Border Patrol into the US rather than being returned to Mexico or another country of origin, he or she was given a Notice to Appear, a document that requires the person to show up for immigration court at a future date.

It placed each person in the legal system, which is backlogged with 1.5 million cases pending, and tracked the person through that date.

In March, as the number of migrants encountered at the southern border rose, from 78,000 in Biden’s first month in office to 173,000 in March, Border Patrol was ordered to release people with Notices to Report instead.

The move would cut down the amount of time that Border Patrol agents would have to spend doing paperwork and requesting court dates for each person.

The Biden administration sought to entice people given Notices to Report to show up by providing those who did with documents to work legally in the US.

■ Bob Dylan’s lawyers have gone on the attack against an anonymous woman who claims he sexually abused her as a child at the height of his 1960s fame.

The woman, only identified in her lawsuit as JC, initially alleged the abuse took place over a six-week period in New York in 1965, but the suit was changed last week to say it happened over “several months” after Dylan historians noted he was overseas on tour at the time.

The suit claims Dylan attempted to “lower her inhibitions with the objective of sexually abusing her, which he did, coupled with the provision of drugs, alcohol, and threats of physical violence.”

In response, Dylan’s legal team dismissed the suit as “a brazen shakedown, false, malicious, reckless and defamatory,” and added: “He will vigorously defend himself against these lawyer-driven lies and seek redress against all those responsible, including by seeking monetary sanctions against persons responsible for manufacturing and bringing this abusive lawsuit.”

"Saw" (2004), "The Conjuring" (2013), "Fast & Furious 7" (2015), "The Conjuring 2" (2016), and "Aquaman" (2018) director James Wan dives back into 1980s horror genre roots and inspirations (from Stanley Kubrick, Dario Argento, Brian De Palma and many more) and, even though at times convoluted, for a good sum of its parts it works effectively enough.

And even though among the madness there is nothing really new to get a firm grip on, this is an above average B-Grade fright-fest filled with an abundance of screaming, running, jumping and things that go bump in the night, all leading to a last act where-in it goes wildly insane, totally bonkers, and when all is said and done, it's may be no masterpiece, but it is a well crafted thrill ride with enough atmosphere, scares and gore to satisfy fans of James Wan and the horror genre in general.

Rourke’s Reviews Drive My Car

After a highly successful run on the international festival circuit, winning a multitude of awards and critical acclaim along the way, Drive My Car now arrives in Australia, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect, with the film now receiving four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and International Feature.

The story centres on renowned actor Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), who is married to screenwriter Oto (Reika Kirishima), and its a relationship that contains some particular oddities.

After an unexpected event, we now see Kafuku two years later, about to take on a theatre production of Uncle Vanya as director, with a multi-national cast which includes disgraced TV star Koji Takatsuki (Masaki Okada), who knew Oto. The producers inform Kafuku that he has to take on a chauffeur, a demand that initially upsets the seasoned performer, as he uses his drive time to practise various scripts via recorded audio cassette, read out by his wife.

His driver is Misaki (Toko Miura), a quiet, very guarded person who likes to keep her distance.

As rehearsals go on, the relationship develops between Kafuku and Misaki, who slowly open up about past grief, loss and guilt.

The short story by Haruki Murakami (whose work has been turned into other impressive films, such as Burning, Norwegian Wood and Tony Takitani) has been adapted with masterful skill by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Happy Hour, Asako I & II), and his direction is extraordinary, keeping everything beautifully low-key, and uses symbolism in a quiet, subtle manner.

Performances are outstanding.

Drive My Car does go three hours, but don’t let that deter you; this is a totally involving, very humane drama, and once you become fully immersed, the time goes by surprisingly quick.

Dark, relentless and exhilarating, this ambitious series uses a zombie-like virus outbreak to tap into several societal problems, as well as that damning topic of human nature.

Students at a high school have to band together to ward off a horde of the ravenous undead, but the situation expands significantly as the story plays out.

While not for the squeamish, the show has more on its mind than just wanting to deliver gory zombie mayhem, and the creators, writers and directors successfully tap into a number of relevant issues and topics (including what so many people have through over the past few years).

The cast are terrific, making each character someone you want to invest in.

This will definitely be one of the best TV shows of 2022.

■ It is 45 years since the passing of Bing Crosby but he lives on through his films and recordings.

Most of us followed his life with great interest as he was once described as "the most popular man on the planet."

Bing portrayed the handsome, easy going wisecracking singer and actor and he was dearly loved.

Harry Lillis Crosby was born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1903 and had six brothers and sisters.

When Harry was only three the family moved to moved to Spokane, Washington.

In 1910 he was given the nickname of ‘Bing’ by a young neighbour and it stuck throughout his life.

Bing attended Gonzaga University and I have seen letters he wrote back to the University after he became rich and famous - he never forgot his peers and was very respectful.

He joined a band and played drums. In 1925 Bing joined a singing group called The Rhythm Boys and he worked with Harry Barris and Al Rinker.

They sang with the famous Paul Whiteman Orchestra.

Bing married Dixie Lee in 1930 and they had four sons Gary, Phillip, Dennis and Lindsay.

Bing decided to go solo in 1931 and developed the ‘crooning style’ of singing and had hits with songs such as Just One More Chance, Out of Nowhere and AMillion Dollar Baby.

Bing was signed to Brunswick Records and was also singing on the CBS Radio network.

He became one of the most popular singers throughout the world and everybody wanted to sing like Bing.

His film career began with short features and by the late 1930s Bing Crosby was a major film star.

Some of his films in this period included Anything Goes, Sing You Sinners, We're Not Dressing, Pennies From Heaven and Rhythm on the Range.

In the film Holiday Inn he sang a new song

by Irving Berlin which became his biggest selling single.

another song but he was proven wrong when the public took it to their hearts and it has been reported that it has sold in excess of 50 million singles over the past 70 years. The figure is around 100 million if you count albums and compilations.

Bing won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1944 for his role as Father O'Malley in Going My Way. I loved the ‘Road films’ with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope which began with Road to Singapore in 1940 and ended with The Road to Hong Kong in 1962.

Dixie Lee died in 1952 and five years later Bing walked down the aisle with Kathryn Grant and they had three children from their happy marriage.

Bing Crosby never came to Australia and I cannot recall seeing a film or telemovie on his life. Over the years he did radio interviews with Norman Banks, Philip Brady and Bert Newton.

In his career Bing Crosby won many awards for his singing and acting. He made the transition into television in the early 1950s after almost 20 years in radio.

My favourite Bing Crosby film is High Soci-

ty where he teamed with Grace Kelly, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra.

There have been many books written on Bing Crosby and there is not enough space in this column to pay justice to his body of work.

Bing Crosby died suddenly whilst playing golf in Madrid on October 14, 1977. He collapsed from a massive heart attack at the age of 74.

The Herald newspaper in Melbourne devoted its entire front page to the story and several pages within the paper. It was a great shock to the world.

I am a member of the Bing Crosby Society and we meet at the Collingwood Library, 11 Stanton St, Abbotsford.

Pictures for Thinking – Benjamin Armstrong Pictures for Thinking has a wide breath of subjects: light, body, history, time, and measurement.

Combinations of these subjects are used to elicit insights or to raise questions.

The same subject is often seen across two or more pictures. The parallel optics between them trigger comparisons and invite the viewer to examine myriad interpretations across subject and history.

Flying The Flag

Flying the Flag – Annabel McCourt Contemporary British artist Annabel McCourt exhibits her work in Australia as part of the British Council UK Australia Season 2021222 themed Who Are We Know?

This flag series begins with a downward-pointing triangle (a badge of shame originating in Nazi concentration camps, reappropriated as a symbol of resistance and since used by the larger LGBTQI+ community as a symbol of pride.)

Moving chronologically, Flying the Flag brings relevant elements from Lincolnshire’s historic and significant of elements within other LGBTQIA+ records.

This series combines seemingly naïve but powerful white on black designs, echoing the use of body inking and gang symbols by dangerous white supremacist groups, with bright flags with colours taken from a deconstructed ‘Rainbow Flag’.

The flags also question colonialism, representation, rule and identity.

Bloom Like Flowers -Hsin Lin Bloom Like Flowers explores the process of blooming and our connection to nature.

The exhibition features meticulously detailed acrylic paintings and prints that celebrate native Australian flora and wildlife and highlights the ecologies and habitats that support and connect them. Gallery 1. ★ Still the Water Flows is a selection of works from the Maroondah Art Collection exploring how humans and nature are continuously fluid and have the ability to adapt in times of turbulence, trauma and change.

Tax agent misrepresented

■ The Administrative Appeals Tribunal has upheld the Tax Practitioners Board’s decision to terminate a Victorian tax agent’s registration following an investigation which revealed that she made several misrepresentations to multiple Federal Government agencies, and received higher government benefits than she may have otherwise been entitled to.

The TPB investigation found that Feride Cerrah had both failed to act with honesty and integrity, and comply with taxation laws in the conduct of her personal affairs, including by failing to advise the Commissioner of Taxation that she was required to lodge income tax returns for multiple years, and misrepresenting her assessable income in those years.

Ms Cerrah was also found to have misled the TPB by making a number of false declarations.

■ By his own admission Glenn Wheatley's early years were that of a poor family, doing its best to survive in Brisbane.

“We often skipped meals because we had no more left from Dad's meagre pay packet as a truck driver,” he recalled.

Glenn left school at 14 and even as a teenager he had a strong work ethic. His first musical venture, aged 17 was starting a club featuring Blues music. Glenn made a small fortune and bought a flashy car until the Blues club went belly-up, crushed by a nearby dance club. Back to square one for Glenn who took it on the chin and developed his next idea.

The world of Aussie music owes a lot to Glenn Wheatley.

■ Former Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, has been selected to host and interview interesting folk. The program will air on ABC TV from February 24 at 9.30 pm.

Your host Jan Williams, warmly welcomes you to The Singing Gardens where you will find a peaceful garden oasis of predominantly rhododendrons, azaleas and other European trees and shrubs just waiting for you to discover them!

The garden is the former home of poet laureate C.J. Dennis who originally purchased the property in 1915.

After marrying in 1917 his wife Olive, who was more often affectionately r eferred to as Biddy, set about making the former Mill House and surrounds into a home and garden. With Biddy focussing on the property this left C.J. Dennis to focus primarily on his craft. He spent many years here writing and the garden and it’s inhabitants directly inspired his final book “The Singing Garden” published in 1935.

After C.J.’s death in 1938 Biddy sold the property which was purchased as a weekend retreat by Olive Thring the wife of F.W. Thring Snr (dec. 1936). Olive often sent a young Frank Thring Jnr. to Toolangi to spend his weekends and school holidays ther e; some would say causing mischief. R umour has it Frank Thring Jnr. was not too fond of the property and although he inherited it on his Mother’s passing, it was sold off and finally purchased by Jan and Vic in 1969.

Jan and Vic have maintained Biddy’s original garden design and to this day you can still see some of the original trees and shrubs as planted by Biddy and C.J. Dennis. Since Vic’s death the family is working together to maintain Vic and Biddy’s heritage. Lifelife’s text service reaches new group

■ Research shows that Lifeline’s Crisis Text service is reaching entirely new groups of Australians in distress and at high risk of suicide.

Since 2019, Lifeline has provided Australia’s only Crisis Text helpline, providing support to people in psychological distress.

Thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the Federal Government, Lifeline Australia has now been able to fast-track the expansion of text and chat services to 24-hoursa-day, seven-days-a-week to meet demand and increase accessibility for hard-to-reach groups.

Lifeline CEO Colin Seery said that rather than diverting phone calls from the 13 11 14 service, the always-on digital platform has in fact increased the range and total number of people contacting the organisation.

“This is a landmark in suicide prevention in Australia and is all about bringing help to people who are in situations and environments where accessing support through digital communication is the only safe or viable option,” said Mr Seery.

“The service is unique in that it allows for genuine privacy during contact, so it is well suited to support cohorts at heightened vulnerability such as help seekers experiencing domestic and family violence or those living with a disability.”

In a 2019 evaluation of the original service by the Australian Health

Services Research Institute, 42 percent of contacts said they would not have used another service if the text or chat were not available.

Of 1000 help seekers who were asked to provide demographic information, the median age of people using the service is 24 years old, while 80 per cent of help seekers identified as female.

Greg Hunt, Minister for Health and Aged Care, said Lifeline’s 24/ 7 text service is an important expansion of the vital service the charity provides in crisis support and suicide prevention.

“The significant surge in demand for Lifeline’s services during COVID means more people are reaching out for help, and services like Lifeline are there to help,” said Mr Hunt.

“The expansion of the text service is backed by data showing that it is the preferred channel for high risk members of the community including young people, those experiencing family and domestic violence, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

David Coleman, Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, aid the Morrison Government’s long partnership with Lifeline was part of its resolute commitment to suicide prevention.

Mardi Gras Festival

■ The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival makes a grand return this month (February 18 –March 6) with a packed program of events, performances, exhibitions and community activities.

Six-race program at Yarra Valley

■ An unusually small six race program was held at Yarra Valley on Monday February 7 and Bolinda trainer Brent Lilley combined with Chris Alford to land the IGA Liquor Trotters Handicap over 2150 metres with former Kiwi 5Y0 Majestic Son-The Bog gelding Emdeegee.

Having his second outing in Oz and first since December 13 when tailed off at Swan Hill after galloping on a number of occasions, Emdeecee showed rapid improvement under Lilley’s guidance and trotted to perfection from a 20 metre handicap to quickly trail the polemarker Bad Boy Jay Jay which led easily.

Moving around the pacemaker in the final circuit to take over, Emdeegee raced clear to register a 7.6 metre victory over Sovereign Minx (30m) three back the markers which followed the winner everywhere.

Equal 20 metre hope Pharisee was third 5.3 metres away after trailing the pair. The mile rate 2-06.2.

■ Seven year old Bettors Delight-Maries Legend gelding Trent From Punchy usually goes round week in-week out and brought up his 13th success at start number 140 by taking the Yarra Valley Toyota Pace over 1650 metres.

Trained at Drysdale by Ash Warton, Trent Form Punchy with Greg Sugars in the sulky began fast from gate four to lead from Jay Bee (gate two) and after an easy time, kicked clear on the final bend to prevail by 4.3 metres over Jay Bee, with Argh Me Hearty 9.2 metres back in third place after showing no speed from the pole to settle four back the markers. The mile rate 1-57.4.

■ Heathcote trainer Terry French and daughter Tayla who has started the season off in great form, snared the 1650 metre Yarra Glen Bakehouse Pace with Hard Rock Shannon, a 9Y0 Rock N Roll Heaven-Chloe Shannon gelding Hard Rock Shannon who’s last victory had been at Yarra Valley in April last year.

Unable to head off the poleline leader Zaras All Good from gate five, Tayla was content to allow Hard Rock Shannon to race exposed for most of the trip, proving much too strong over the concluding stages to record a 1.8 metre margin in 1-57.5 from Feel The Buzz which trailed the weakening pacemaker who held third 5.5 metres away.

■ Rockbank owner/trainer Ted Caruana received a kick along after his 3Y0 Courage Under Fire-Crown Defender colt District Attorney greeted the judge in the United Petroleum Pace over 2150 metres with Michael Bellman in the sulky. Crossing Onehandonebounce which flew away from outside the front line shortly after the start, District Attorney (gate three) was presented with the lead and after being allowed to dictate terms, scored by 2.4 metres from a game Kaptain Kidd which raced uncovered from a solo second line draw. Sea Rover ran on late from the rear for third 8.2 metres back. The mile rate 159.5.

■ Shepparton raced on Tuesday with an entertaining meeting and Girgarre East trainer/driver Gary Pekin provided a winner when 6Y0 Sportswriter-Twenty Four Carat Gold gelding Cresco Goldigger scored in the Alabar Pace over 1690 metres, returning a mile rate of 1-57.1.

Enjoying a comfortable passage from the pole trailing Cheeki Philtra (gate three), Cresco Goldigger used the sprint lane to race clear in the straight and record a 3.2 metre margin over the pacemaker, with Beach Time 2.4 metres back in third place after racing exposed from gate four.

■ Echuca part-owner/trainer Fred McKenner combined with Greg Sugars to land the 1690 metre Barastoc Pace with Cobber Mac, a 9Y0 gelded son of Gotta Go Cullect and Bundora Rose. Going forward from outside the front line to cross Fomo (gate three) shortly after the start, Cobber Mac rated a treat ran out a 1.2 metre victor over Rolling Along (one/two at bell) and Paddington Central which switched down to the sprint lane on turning after racing uncovered at the bell. Extricated into the clear approaching the final bend to be three wide on turning, Blackbird Miss at start number four ran home best to gain the day by 1.4 metres in advance of Flame Lady which trailed the pacemaker after leading out from gate three, with Just A Philtra running home late from the rear for third 3 metres away. ■ Melton held a massive 10 event card on Wednesday and Parwan co-trainers David and Brad Barnes scored a first up victory in the DNR Logistics 3Y0 Pace over 1720 metres with Rock N Roll Heaven-Indi Rose gelding Rocknroll Walla.

Driven by neighbour Craig Demmler, Rocknroll Walla despite racing greenly at times led throughout from gate two, accounting for Modern Ginger which trailed by a neck after easing away from the inside on turning.

Gameofchange (one/two – four wide home turn) was third 2.7 metres away. The rate 1-56.4.

■ Kate Hargreaves combined with stable assistant Jack McKinnon to snare the Allied Express Trotters Mobile over 1720 metres with Double Helix, a 5Y0 gelded son of Majestic Son and Wee Sun Lass in 2-00.6.

Driven by Ballarat’s Connor Clarke, Francesco settled near last from gate two on the second line as Our Arabella led from the pole.

■ Gold, Silver and Bronze Heats of the Lyn McPherson Memorial Breed For Speed Series over 1650 metres were held at Bendigo on Thursday – the winners being : Black And Gold (Ships Spur-Earls Gold) for Carisbrook’s Brett (Shippy) Shipway, Homonym (Majestic Son-ATouch Of Sun) Emmett & Richard Brosnan and Vacation Hill (Muscle Hill-Vacanza) for Andy and Kate Gath.

Black And Gold driven by Michael Bellman ran home stylishly three wide in the last lap from three back to score by 6.7 metres from Aldebaran Stevie along the sprint lane after trailing the weakening leader Ima Ziabee, with Paris Faith third a nose away after following the winner home from near last. The mile rate 1-58.

Homonym driven by Emmett moved from three back the markers in the final circuit to join the pacemaker Amour Maternal on the final bend and win by a head. Electrojet was third 4.4 metres back after following the winner all the way. The mile rate 1-58.6.

Disappointments

■ Kilmore raced on Friday February 11 catering for most classes with well supported runners winning most races including many from the Macedon Races District.

It was disappointing for off course punters that Sky showed no betting graphics for most of the night, plus false dividends on several occasions.

Perhaps the most popular victory of the night occurred in the the O.K.R. – 98.3 FM Pace over 1690 metres which was sweet music for Kilmore’s Rita Burnett when Im The Mightygramps saluted the judge in 2-00.3.

Trained by Rita, Im The Mightygramps, a speedy 5Y0 gelded son of Western Terror and Cracker Three enjoyed a cosy passage from gate five one/one trailing the heavily supported Prima Donna which raced outside the pacemaker American Tiger (gate four). Easing three wide on the final bend, Im The Mightygramps got there in the last stride to register a half head margin over a game Prima Donna, with American Tiger 2.8 metres away third.

■ Locally based reinsman Ross Payne was successful in the opening race – the Momentum Gaming Pace over 2180 metres aboard Croydon part-owner/trainer John McGillivray’s honest 10Y0 Stonebridge Regal-Lotasilkare gelding Lotakevi in a mile rate of 2-02.4.

Having start number 131, Lotakevi led out from the pole before allowing the Wally Toczynski Monegeeta trained Ears Ponder (gate three) outside him to assume control with around a mile to travel.

Using the sprint lane, Lotakevi scored by 2 metres, with Rolling Along (three back the markers – three wide home turn) third a half head away.

■ Are HRV kidding themselves with the naming of some races in recent times ?

Two stand out events over the past two weeks have been The Pure Steel and The Knight Pistol named after former outstanding ‘Stayers’ yet both of these races have been run over 2240 metres – an insult to the horses themselves.

Maybe not much thought went into the naming, but in all due respect it could be possible that most of the staff at HRV were not around when these champions raced and did not have the knowledge of past performances.

Then again, it could be that there are not too many distance races programmed. the finish over Patched (four back the markers – one/two last lap) and Flash Kyvallet (three back the markers) The mile rate 2-05.7.

■ Monegeetta owners Marty and Laurel Miles were winners when Sunshine Beach-Rockin In Eden filly Cocora trained by Marty and driven by son David easily captured the 1690 metre Jet Roofing 3Y0 Pace in a rate of 1-58.7. Not pushed out from gate five as Lollipop inside her went forward to arrest the lead away from polemarker Shaken Sands. Once balanced Cocora let rip to effortlessy take over with a circuit to travel before coasting to the wire 9.1 metres in advance of Thug Rose (one/one – three wide last lap), with Lollipop third a half head away along the sprint lane.

Inglis Premier Yearling Sale booms

■ The Chief Executive Officer of the Inglis Group, Sebastian Hutch, is over the moon with entries for their upcoming Sale with a total of 793 lots to go under the hammer.

The action gets underway at the Inglis Property at Oaklands Junction, just down from the Tullamarine Airport, on Sunday February 27.

Crossing works at Hallam ■ The dangerous and congested level crossing at Hallam Rd in Hallam will soon be a thing of the past, as major works ramp up during Autumn.

The Hallam Rd level crossing has been the site of 14 near misses in the past 10 years – 11 involving pedestrians and three involving vehicles.

The crossing impedes the flow of more than 20,000 motorists each day, with the boom gates down for more than a third of the two-hour morning peak.

The level crossing will now be gone for good in April – with a new rail bridge built over Hallam Rd and a new Hallam Station.

“We’re transforming travel in the south-east by getting rid of the dangerous and congested level crossing at Hallam Rd for good and building a new road bridge and station - improving safety in the area and creating more reliable journeys for motorists,” said Luke Donnellan, Narre Warren MLA. Crews have started adding the finishing touches to the new station, which will open to passengers in May. The station has been built with two entrances and modern facilities for the 2200 passengers who use the station each day.

Police vehicles rammed

■ A man has been arrested after he allegedly failed to stop for Police while driving a stolen vehicle through several Melbourne suburbs on Tuesday night last week (Feb. 8).

Police observed a white 2015 BMW X6 Wagon bearing stolen plates on Warrigal Rd in Malvern East around 9.45pm. The vehicle was allegedly stolen during an aggravated burglary in Burwood East on the previous day.

■ Detectives have charged a man following a series of alleged robberies targeting women in Melbourne’s south.

The man was interviewed and charged with a number of offences including robbery, intentionally cause injury and assault with intent to commit sexual assault.

Local News Frankston’s new psychology degree

● Dr Fahad Hanna teaching students at Chisholm ■ Chisholm Frankston has introduced Australia’s first fast-track Bachelor of Psychology course, which will revolutionise education in the region.

Diploma-qualified students of all ages can go straight into the second year of the course, which starts on February 28.

Dr Andrew Bridges, Dean of Chisholm Higher Education College, said: “Entry-level diploma students can qualify for an Associate Degree in Psychology in one year and a Bachelor of Psychology in two years”.

The psychology course incorporates a wide range of transferable skills that can be used in business, community, numeracy, literacy and analysis, “launching students towards their chosen career path”.

Dr Bridges said psychology was “a great foundation for a wide variety of areas. Not all people who study psychology become registered psychologists or work in mental health.

I am an applied psychologist and my first job was designing aircraft cockpits”.

He said the skills gained from psychology analytical studies could, for example, be used in the fields of early childhood, education, industrial design, sport, nursing, business or human resources.

Committee for Greater Frankston CEO Ginevra Hosking praised the initiative and said “Chisholm’s innovative Bachelor of Psychology course provides alternative pathways into tertiary qualification for students who weren’t initially set on what they wanted to be”.

“The course will help people broaden their career paths, and will significantly change how students get into work.”

Ms Hosking, a member of a panel providing feedback to Chisholm about industry skills needed in the region, said students completing each year would have something to show for it – an associate degree after the first year; a bachelor degree after the second year.

She said Chisholm’s initiative was another feather in the cap of Frankston’s world-class health and education precinct, which “generates high-paying local jobs 2.5 times faster than the national average and positively affects our region’s prosperity”.

“The precinct includes Peninsula Health’s Frankston Hospital and Monash University’s Peninsula campus, and their jointly run new academic and research building Ngarnga Centre, which is training the next generation of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals,” Ms Hosking said.

The Bachelor of Psychology course will be offered in a “blended” environment – onsite from Chisholm’s new Stage 1 campus redevelopment and online. Stage 1 was built at a cost of $76 million by the state government.

The $68 million Stage 2 is underway.

■ A new fenced dog park was officially unveiled at Roy Dore Reserve in Carrum last week by Kingston Mayor Cr Steve Staikos.

He was assisted by Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change; Sonya Kilkenny, Carrum MLA, and a host of local dog owners and pets.

The new park is fully fenced and features a nature play activity area for pets to explore.

Cr Staikos said dog owners in the Carrum and Patterson Lakes have a fantastic new space for pooches to exercise.

■ Many people either own backyard hens or know of someone who does. The growing popularity has largely been due to families wanting to become more self-sustainable.

So why is keeping backyard hens so good for your family?

Well, hens make for fantastic pets! Our breed of hens are Hy-line Browns which are extremely friendly and placid.

They love company and like nothing more than to spend time interacting with their owners.

We hear lots of entertaining stories from our customers such as their hens going on school runs, on swings with the kids and happily jumping up onto their laps.

Good egg-laying breeds like our Hy-Line’s also quickly pay for themselves by providing your family with highly nutritious and delicious eggs throughout the year.

Their eggs are high in protein and minerals but low i n calories. You also have peace of mind knowing exactly how your hens are treated and what food they have eaten.

Of course, you can’t get more “local” food than what you get from your ownbackyard! When combined with a vegetable garden, your family becomes far more self-sufficient and able to live more sustainably.

If you really had to avoid social contact, your hens and vegetables could keep your household well fed over the long-term.

Hen ownership also teaches children some important, practical lessons about life. Not only do they need to be responsible for feeding and providing water for their hens but they must collect eggs daily and keep the coop clean and safe.

Excess eggs can also be sold or given away to friends and neighbours which is a great way of benefiting others in your local community.
