Credit card fraud

■ Detectives from the Kingston Crime Investigation Unit are investigating a theft and deception after credit cards were stolen from a car in Parkdale.

Investigators believe a handbag was stolen from a car on Herbert St, Parkdale.

Cards from the theft were then used by three people at various stores throughout the suburbs and East Melbourne. ● Turn To Page 3

Support for Foundation ● From Page One Brighton Grammar School alumni, along with key sponsors, supported the Monash Cystic Fibrosis community at a charity golf event held at Cheltenham Golf Club.

Established in 2016, the Monash CF Foundation enhances the quality of healthcare provided by the Monash CF Service at the Monash Children's Hospital/Monash Health in meeting the daily needs of CF children and adults, carers and their families.

Funds raised and projects achieved, whether by funding equipment, people or programs, aim to improve patient care, quality and length of life while supporting the push to find a cure.

Monash CF Foundation CEO/ Founder Felicity Stretch said:, "Cystic fibrosis is a life-limiting genetic condition affecting 3500 Australians, and over 200 of these are treated by Monash Health/Monash Children’s Hospital.

There is no cure but advances in treatment and care are helping people to better manage their CF. CF causes an abnormal buildup of thick and sticky mucus in the lungs, airways and digestive system. Treatment requires intensive daily physiotherapy to clear the lungs and airways, countless medications and frequent hospitalisations."

This year a third family with a member suffering from CF has commenced at Brighton Grammar School, which knows all too well the daily needs of CF sufferers, having modified its on-site student protocols and practices to meet the needs of CF families.

An example of one of the many projects funded by the Monash CF Foundation is during the COVID pandemic lock down when the Monash CF Foundation along with two other donors contributed over $67,000 to purchase portable spirometry devices which are key in assisting with the now familiar Telehealth Program.

Tribute to John

■ Stuart Grimley, MLC for Western Victoria (Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party), paid a tribute to a special Victoriuan in State Parliament this week: “John Forbes was a sporting great. Mr Modest to some, John was a community and sporting hero, but he was also importantly a founding member of the Blue Ribbon Foundation. This foundation, as I am sure all members are aware, has honoured the memories of former police officers since 1988.

“This became especially important when last year we lost four members in one tragic incident and a raft of others through mental health battles—and this continues to be a problem that I am very passionate about. I spoke to Neil Soullier, the current CEO of Blue Ribbon, this week, and it is clear that the devastation of losing John has hit many across their community.

“Neil spoke highly of John and the impact that he had as an integral part of the Blue Ribbon Foundation. John was also a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia. John was a real survivor, having latestage Parkinson’s and having battled bowel cancer in the past.

“His death is tragic, but I hope all those that have known John - his friends, family, colleagues and beyond - have a drink for John in his honour. My condolences go to John’s wife, Fay, their two sons and their six grandchildren. Rest in peace, John Forbes, OAM.”

Online abuse ■ “When I was first sworn in to this Parliament in 2014, I had no idea of the type of online abuse and direct abuse that I would experience, particularly as a female politician,” Fiona Patten, Reason Party leader told the Legislative Council this month.

“Sometimes as women in politics it can be a dangerous job for us. We are finding out this week that women across the nation feel in danger in their workplaces across the country, girls are still being abused in school and women are still being abused in aged-care facilities.

“In my position in this Parliament and on behalf of my sisters with disability, women of colour, Indigenous women, incarcerated women, trans women and older women, I say enough is enough,” Ms Patten said.

Detectives from the Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit have re leased CCTV images after a man was assaulted during an armed robbery in St Kilda. The incident occurred in the courtyard of a Greeves St apartment complex about 4.40am on Monday, January 25. Investigators have been told an unknown woman led the male victim to the courtyard area where he was approached by at least two men. The unknown men produced box cutters and made demands for the victim’s property. The victim attempted to run away and was chased onto the street before being assaulted. The group stole his wallet, keys, watch, jewellery and phone before fleeing on foot. The 56-year-old man sustained minor injuries. The woman is perceived to be Caucasian, late 20s to early 30s, slim build with dark hair. The man is perceived to be Caucasian, in his late 20s to early 30s, slim build and with dark hair tied in to a bun with shaved sides.

The State Government’s new emer gency department at Monash Medi cal Centre is now complete. Families in Melbourne’s expanding south-east have better access to emergency care close to home. Acting Premier James Merlino and Minister for Health Martin Foley officially opened the new cutting-edge facility on Sunday (Mar. 28) and met some of the first patients being treated there. The new 35 bed emergency department, part of a $76.3 million expansion and traffic improvement project, includes a new triage entrance, nine resuscitation bays and pandemic negative air flow capability.

‘Serious misconduct of sexual nature’ ■ Ex-Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has been found to have committed “serious misconduct of a sexual nature”, according to an investigation by Charles Scerri, QC. The Department of Health released a statement on Friday (Mar. 26) finalising an investiinto the former leader of the Victorian Opposition (Liberal Party).

The misconduct is said to have been against a woman at a dinner awards ceremony while he was chairman of Melbourne Health.

“Some of the conduct could be described as over-familiar, rude, obnoxious or sleazy.

“Some of the conduct was ‘serious misconduct of a sexual nature’ within the scope of [the] investigation.

“This included touching the complainant’s inner thigh, close to her groin and the complainant’s lower back.”

Mr Doyle says that due to his ill health he is unable to respond to the allegations.

Hoons swarm South-East INCREASE IN MEETINGS

■ Up to 100 cars have been in attendance at illegal car meets around Carrum Downs, Braeside, Dandenong and Frankston, SouthEastern Metropolitan MLC David Limbrick has told State Parliament.

“In recent months my electorate has seen an increase in illegal car meets and hoon behaviour,” Mr Limbrick said.

“Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Brian Bourke said:’The spotters alert the drivers and spectators that Police are on their way.

“And by the time they get there they are gone. Sergeant Bourke further stated, and I quote: ‘We’ve also had reports from the Police Air Wing that some meets have people with air guns; they’re changing blown tyres faster than a pit crew at Bathurst.

“I do not condone this behaviour. However, it is evident that there are many car enthusiasts across the south-east interested in cars and racing opportunities.

“My question to the minister is: ‘what is the government doing to provide safe alternatives to street racing in the south-east?’

■ The Victorian Electoral Commission has advised that it has sent 5340 Infringement Notices to people who did not vote in the City of Bayside 2020 general election. The Council plays no role in issuing these infringements.

The VEC is the responsible authority for managing local government elections.

The infringement notices follow the VEC issuing Apparent Failure to Vote Notices to query reasons for not voting. The VEC recorded a high number of non-responses following this process.

Individuals who receive an infringement will have an opportunity to provide additional information to support their reasons for not voting should they believe they should have been excused.

Kew improvements ■ Cyclists on the popular Yarra Boulevard in Kew have benefited immensely thanks to the deployment of new CCTV trailers, funded by a $110,000 grant from the Andrews Labor government’s community crime prevention program, says Enver Erdogan, MLC> “Previously cyclists struggled due to tacks being dropped in cycling lanes, which damaged bike tyres and threatened their safety.

“The safety boost, which also aims to reduce hoon driving, drug activity and antisocial behaviour, including the dangerous tacks, has seen new mobile CCTV trailers deployed.

“They are managed by Victoria Police and monitor the 6.6-kilometre stretch of the boulevard that has been the target of malicious tacking incidents over the years.

“My constituents and local stakeholders have told me the cameras have been immensely helpful in reducing tacking incidents,” Mr Erdogan said.

Car impounded

■ Police from Moorabbin Highway Patrol have impounded a car after it was caught speeding at Clayton on Friday night.

Police were patrolling the Princes Highway at 12.40am when they detected a Jeep Cherokee travelling at 174kmh in an 80 zone.

The car was intercepted and officers spoke to the driver, a 36-year-old man from Skye.

The car was impounded for 30 days with towing costs of $878 while the driver will be charged on summons with speed dangerous, manner dangerous, conduct endangering serious injury and conduct endangering life.

$175,000 to overhaul waste ■ The City of Melbourne will deliver $175,000 in grants to local businesses to support cutting waste, reducing emissions and boosting the circular economy.

Lord Mayor Cr Sally Capp said encouraging more efficient waste solutions would reduce costs for businesses and help make Melbourne a more sustainable city.

"We want to encourage ideas and innovation from local businesses to help us deliver smarter waste services across the city," Cr Capp said.

"Waste and recycling services are core Council responsibilities and we want to support local businesses and organisations to find new and improved ways of reducing waste and participating in the circular economy.

"Whether you run a café or an accounting firm, you may be eligible for these grants so please apply if you have an idea about how your business could become more sustainable by reducing waste,” Cr Capp said.

The Circular Economy Innovation Grants are available to help start-ups, small-to-medium sized food businesses, small non-food businesses, entrepreneurs and small non-food social enterprise organisations to help boost the circular economy. The three grant categories include up to $5000 to research and test.

■ Bayside Council says it has the perfect activity to keep children occupied and stimulated over Easter and during the school holidays.

Bayside’s Playground Tester program is turning four and is celebrating with a pirate theme.

Children aged between 1 – 12 years are clamouring to be selected as an official playground tester (no application refused) to swing, slide, jump, climb and explore the next six playgrounds nominated for renewal as part of the Council’s Playground Improvement Plan.

The experts, called Bayside Buccaneers, will provide critical insights to the design team, to ensure that the playgrounds are designed for fun and that the voices of the people that use these spaces is heard.

A treasure map will have the crew on the lookout for loot hidden within each playground.

Scanning the code and providing feedback on what they love and things that might need to be improved at each playground, will also make our volunteers eligible to claim the treasure hidden at each of the playgrounds.

Hampton follow-up ■ Protection for a Hampton property has been the subject of a question asked in State Parliament by Clifford Hayes MLC. “Local residents, Bayside council and I wrote to your office in February to seek urgent interim heritage protection for 28–34 Service Street, Hampton, advising you that developers were about to take the opportunity to exploit a loophole created by the absence of interim orders and were planning to demolish this site,” Mr Hayes told Planning Minister Richard Wynne.

“Much work was done preparing a permanent heritage overlay for this section of the street, which recently had been approved by council and the government, but developers have made a mockery of the system and have just destroyed these homes in the full knowledge that formal protection was on the way.

“Despite writing to warn you of this possibility, I have not even had a reply from you, let alone the urgent protection requested. As this whole event was foreseeable, why did the minister not step in and grant urgent protection to stop the destruction of these significant heritage properties which you had already approved?” Mr Hayes said.

All One Together ■ Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria has welcomed the City of Port Phillip as a new ambassador to its All One Together Antiracism campaign.

The new partnership continueds ECCV’s anti-racism work with companies and community organisations.

Port Phillip CEO Peter Smith said becoming an ambassador for the All One Together campaign was an important move for the organisation.

“Port Phillip Council has a long history of inclusion and celebration of diversity, and while we are pleased with the work we have done, we recognise there is still some way to go and we look forward to rising to the challenge,” Mr Smith said.

Local People Bravery awards

■ Two men were last named announced as recipients of the Bravery Medal following an incident in South Melbourne.

The recipients are Sergeant David Patrick McHenry and Senior Constable Adam McKenzie, both of Victoria Police.

Both displayed considerable bravery during an encounter with an armed offender in South Melbourne on May 13, 2008.

In the late evening, Victoria Police officers stopped a car on Clarenden St. While the officers were speaking to the occupants of the vehicle, they discovered drugs, money and weapons inside the vehicle. One of the occupants then ran from the car.

Other officers joined in the search for the offender. A short time late the offender fired upon a Police vehicle with two officers inside.

Sergeant McHenry, then a Senior Constable, followed the offender on foot into a car park.

Two other officers joined the pursuit. The offender suddenly stopped, turned, and discharged his weapon in the direction of the officers.

The two officers were able to take cover, however Sergeant McHenry was out in the open. Fearful for his safety and that of the other officers, he discharged his service revolver in the direction of the offender.

As Sergeant McHenry was walking backwards towards a nearby vehicle for cover, the offender fired his weapon again, wounding Sergeant McHenry in the leg.

Other officers called for the offender to drop his weapon, but he didn’;t comply. Despite being wounded Sergeant McHenry discharged his service revolver again.

Simultaneously, another officer fired at the offender who fell to the ground, fatally wounded. Sergeant McHenry was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Senior Constable McKenzie, then a Constable, had taken cover. Senior Constable McKenzie fired at the offender who fell to the ground, fatally wounded.

■ Award-winning chamber musicians Inventi Ensemble will return to the Hawthorn Arts Centre’s Chandelier Room stage on Sunday April 18, presenting the fascinating tale of Marianna Martines: Classical music of Vienna.

Audiences can enjoy a program filled with music from Vienna, and learn a rich history around Marianna Martines, a great composer in her own right and influential member of the Vienna musical elite, as well as musician Joseph Haydn, a boarder in her house. Inventi Ensemble will also draw on Martines’ friendship with poet Metastasio, as well as her piano duets with Mozart.

This will be portrayed with Inventi Ensemble’s signature quintet of flute, oboe, violin, viola and cello.

Pioneered by Artistic Directors Melissa Doecke and Ben Opie, Inventi Ensemble first defined Australian music with their inventive style in early 2014.

They have since gone on to perform extensively across Australia with a strong focus on endorsing young and local talent.

Internationally, they have performed at London’s South Bank with San Francisco’s Ensemble Parrallèle, as well as music festivals across Europe, Abu Dhabi and USA. Melissa Doecke is an exciting flautist with a French sensibility, depicted by her elegant performance style and restrained emotion.

Oboist Ben Opie has been described as an oboist of matchless capacity who has the power to keep his audience connected in every performance.

New mural at Chelsea ■ Local people are invited to get involved with working on a new mural in homage of the ‘Art Pass’: a large-scale public mural which was created for the Chelsea railway station underpass in 2013 by artist Anu Patel.

The existing mural needs to be demolished as part of to the Level Crossing Removal Project’s station redevelopment works.

Anu Patel has taken up an invitation to return to Chelsea in 2021 to create the new community mural ‘Reimagining the Art Pass’ in one of the lanes in Chelsea’s shopping precinct.

Kingston Mayor Cr Steve Staikos said it is great that community art is being valued and the Art Pass will be replaced with an exciting new mural.

“The original piece was created following community consultation, in which residents shared their ideas on how to improve feelings of safety in Chelsea,” said Cr Staikos.

“One of these, was the creation of a colourful and fun, large-scale mural in the station underpass. Many community members participated in workshops to create the mural – and it became a source of civic pride which was affectionately referred to by locals as ‘The Art Pass’.

We will be photographing the original mural piece before it is demolished,” said Cr Staikos.

Query on Markham Estate

■ Public housing at the Markham Estate in Ashburton has been queried in State Parliament by Clifford Hayes, South Metropolitan MLC. “My question is to the minister representing the Minister for Planning and relates to the Victorian Government’s proposal to redevelop public housing at the Markham estate in Ashburton, which is being managed by Development Victoria, the government’s property development agency.

“Despite this project being opposed by Boroondara Council in its early stages, the government has progressed this development without any further constructive council or community consultation, changing planning laws on the way to take control and remove any council processes and to remove third-party appeal rights, effectively denying residents of any input.

Residents would like to know why, when Council’s usual function is assessing planning applications—for which it is well staffed, capable and experienced—it has been removed as the responsible authority for this site.”

Some 178 dwellings are planned, with five for people with a disability.

Yarra’s solar recharging ■ People on the go will now be able to charge their device or connect to free Wi-Fi at one of three new smart benches in the City of Yarra.

The benches are the first of their kind in inner city Melbourne, and are powered by 100 per cent renewable solar energy.

Eco Renewable Energy, the partnering company, is providing and maintaining the benches at no cost to Yarra.

With the racy title of This F*cking Lady, it's the story of legendary expatriate Australian actor Coral Browne, star of stage and screen last century, who was a true grand dame of her art.

From humble beginnings in West Footscray, Coral Browne decided to show her mother just how good she could be at transforming herself into the most English of performers, and took the Poms on in England at their own game.

Her memorable stage and screen performances included Auntie Mame, The Killing of Sister George and Alan Bennett's' An Englishman Abroad, to name but a few.

Coral's private life was at least as fascinating as her public one, with a string of famous lovers including Paul Robeson and Maurice Chevalier, and then a late life marriage to horror movie great Vincent Price, her darling 'Vinnie'.

While the title may raise some eyebrows, Amanda stresses that the show is great fun and full of lively anecdotes.

Observations ABC of Storytelling

■ The ABC is calling on high school-aged students from across greater Melbourne to share a story about their life through the Takeover Melbourne competition.

The annual ABC storytelling competition - in partnership with VicHealth, City of Melbourne, Centre for Multicultural Youth and 31 local councils across Greater Melbourne - creates a powerful platform for young Melburnians to be heard and to share their experiences, challenges and passions.

Entries for Takeover Melbourne have opened for high school storytellers to share their stories with ABC audiences around the country.

ABC producers will work with the winners to develop and showcase their stories for broadcast across the ABC. The winners will also receive networking and leadership opportunities to enable their voices to be heard in the corridors of power.

Judith Whelan, Director of ABC Regional and Local, said the Takeover Melbourne competition "provides young people with the opportunity to tell their stories and create their own narrative".

"The ABC is dedicated to sharing the unique and powerful voices of young Australians. Initiatives like Takeover remind the rest of us that it’s time to listen," she said.

Dr Sandro Demaio, CEO of VicHealth, said: "We need to be listening to the stories and concerns of young people so we can responsibly make decisions with their voices in mind.

“I’m looking forward to discovering the passions and ideas from young Melburnians who are showcasing their own stories."

The inaugural 2020 Takeover Melbourne competition attracted hundreds of entries from high school students across the city. The winners included Year 12 student Mohammad from Attwood, in Melbourne's north west, who shared his story of arriving in Australia as a refugee, the challenges of studying during the COVID-19 pandemic and his dream of becoming Prime Minister.

"Takeover Melbourne gave me a platform to share my story and I know there are still thousands of stories waiting to be told," he said. "This is an opportunity to discover those stories and the people behind them. I encourage young people across Melbourne to get involved, so they can feel heard, seen and valued."

Entries can be submitted via the Takeover Melbourne website until June 25: abc.net.au/ takeover.

The ABC is offering free workshops and teaching resources for young people, teachers and community groups to help with storytelling and Takeover Melbourne entries.

What’s On Michael Shadar 110%

■ Comedian Michael Shafar had some good news and bad news.

First up, the bad news.

While the world was locked down battling COVID-19, Shafar battled a second bout of testicular cancer.

The good news is that in his new show, 110% Shafar has perfected the art of gallows humour by probing his own traumatic journey.

The outcome of his introspection is an astonishing laugh out loud trip through his world.

The jokes streamed out in rapid-fire.

Gags about chemo, losing a testicle and the indignities of being a patient flowed to the delight of the audience made up of in part of a team of Shafar’s medicos, including his oncologists.

In between, Shafar probes a host of subjects - his experience of lockdown surviving on Job Keeper, gigs on cruise ships luckily not the Ruby Princess, terrorism, the twoState question, and that old stand-up favourite, Pauline Hanson.

Next, Shafar delves into his family history.

His Jewish mother still disappointed he didn’t become a lawyer, his grandmother, his aunt, Hitler and the holocaust – nothing, and no one is off-limits.

Sigmund Freud once said about Jewish humour:“I do not know whether there are many other instances of a people making fun to such a degree of their own character.”

There’s a reason there are so many great Jewish comedians, and Shafar gives us a masterclass of hilarious observational comedy by mining the quirks and neuroses of his life, making for classic old school Jewish schtick.

It’s a breath of fresh air.

One of the founding members of the Comedy Women’s Association and Light the Way Home Project, which ensures safe travel home for new comics who may be at risk, Caili is excited to be working with Katrina, in what will be her fourth festival show.

Medications cause falls ■ The "I've fallen and I can't get up!" commercial created a famous catchphrase in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Now, a new study finds far too many falls among the elderly could very well be due to the medications they're taking. Researchers from the University of Buffalo report that nearly every older American over 65 years-old (94 per cent) was prescribed at least one drug that raised their risk of falling in 2017. That's a big increase in comparison to 1999, when 57 per cent of older adults received these types of medications. Troublingly, death rates due to falls more than doubled between 1999 and 2017. Of course, just because a fall doesn't kill an individual, that doesn't mean there isn't lasting damage. Especially among the elderly, a momentary loss of balance can result in any number of serious injuries. Hip fractures are a particularly life-threatening injury for seniors.

According to the CDC, Americans spend close to $50 billion each year on fall-related injuries. "Our study indicates two trends increasing concurrently at a population level that should be examined at the individual level. Our hope is it will start more conversations on health care teams about the pros and cons of medications prescribed for vulnerable populations," says Amy Shaver, PharmD, lead investigator and postdoctoral associate in the UB School of Public Health and Health Professions, in a university release.

One rule for the boss

■ Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon pushed to get the power bank's employees back in the office during the height of the pandemic, but spent his time jetting off to the Bahamas seven times in seven weeks on the company jet. Solomon famously called remote working an "aberration" and pushed to buck New York City lockdown measures until top executives talked him down, according to the report. All the while, he jetted off to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Montana at a time when Americans were restricted from traveling due to the rapid spread of COVID19. Bloomberg suggested that Solomon's lack of regard for the safety of his associates led to the rapid departure of three of his key team members in recent months and frustration within the financial institution known for discretion. Bloomberg further reported that while the pandemic "unleashed a windfall for Wall Street" and that Goldman's revenue jumped 22 perc ent last year, the debate is stirring over Solomon's leadership style.

No attached to grandeur ■ Megyn Kelly didn't buy what Meghan Markle served up to Oprah Winfrey. The veteran journalist, 50, slammed Markle as "un-self-aware" hours after Markle and Prince Harry's bombshell interview with Winfrey aired claiming she wasn't attached to the "grandeur" of being the Duchess of Sussex.

"Meghan goes onto say, I don't believe in any of the grandeur.

There's an article already up on the New York Post here in the States that's saying this is the person who had Clooney and Oprah at her wedding even though she didn't even know them, and then covered herself in blood diamonds from a Saudi prince, so like, spare us that you're not into any of the grandeur," Kelly said on ITV's Good Morning Britain. It was reported that Markle, 39, wore a pair of lavish drop earrings gifted to her by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

■ Comedian/actor Tim Allen is reflecting on his troubled past with drugs and alcohol. The Last Man Standing" star, who is now nearly 23 years sober, served almost two-and-ahalf years in federal prison after being busted in 1978 with more than a pound of cocaine at Michigan's Kalamazoo/ Battle Creek International Airport.

The now-67-year-old actor pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges. "I just shut up and did what I was told," Allen, who was 23 at the time, recalled of his prison stint on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast.

"It was the first time ever I did what I was told and played the game. I learned literally how to live day by day. And I learned how to shut up. You definitely want to learn how to shut up." After about eight months behind bars, Allen "got used to" being in lockup and even had "OK times." Tim Allen was busted for cocaine in 1978 by the Kalamazoo Sheriff's Department.

Allen's troubles began after his father was killed by a drunk driver when the Home Improvement star was just 11 years old. "After my old man died, I really just played games with people and told adults what they wanted to hear and then stole their booze," he shared.

Looking back, Allen said he feels "shame" over his actions given the way his father died. "I look back on those things, this is sober guy stuff, I had so much shame at the things that I did especially driving people around," he said. "Coming from a dad that was killed that way, it's difficult to get past it." He added, "I love my life. I'm not any more mentally stable, I have the same issues I had. Now, I can't hide from them."

■ Russian intelligence has been planting disinformation about Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine in recent months, pushing misleading claims in four Kremlin-linked publications about the safety and efficacy of the company's mRNA shot, an unidentified State Department official told The Wall Street Journal.

The official said two of the outlets are fronts for the SVR, Russia's foreign intelligence service; one is controlled by the FSB, which is a successor agency to the KGB; and one is linked to the GRU, which is Russia's military intelligence service.

None of the three vaccines being offered to Americansdeveloped and manufactured by Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer have been linked to any serious side effects, and are all highly effective, according to the CDC. A new report by the Alliance for Securing Democracy, an NGO under the aegis of the German Marshall Fund, explains what it believes is behind the Russian disinformation campaign.

"The emphasis on denigrating Pfizer is likely due to its status as the first vaccine besides Sputnik V to see mass use, resulting in a greater potential threat to Sputnik's market dominance," it says.

A Kremlin spokesman denied the report, blaming the US for overreacting to what amounts to nothing more than a "debate" over vaccines.

Magazine ■ During the 1950s, at Christmas time, Melbourne picture theatres would screen Mario Lanza with the choirboys singing Ave Maria, in a clip from his film The Great Caruso. It is now on You Tube with more than one million hits.

Mario Lanza was an established opera singer before finding fame as a film star. As the years have rolled by I have come to appreciate the work of this amazing American singer.

Alfred Arnold Cocozza was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1921. He was the son of Italian immigrants and began to study singing at the age of 15. The young tenor made his operatic debut onstage in The Merry Wives of Windsor during 1942.

He changed his name to Mario Lanza but his career was interrupted during the War years when he served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mario married Betty Hicks in 1945.

His big break came in 1947 when he was spotted singing at the Hollywood Bowl by Louis B Mayer and signed to a seven-year contract with the MGM studios.

His film debut was in That Midnight Kiss starring opposite Kathryn Grayson in 1949. I had the great thrill of speaking with Kathryn Grayson in a radio interview and Kathryn thought the world of Mario and his wife Betty.

When they first went to California to make the film they were guests at Kathryn's home until they had purchased a home of their own.

His films at MGM included The Toast Of New Orleans, The Great Caruso and Because

His next big hit song was The Loveliest Night Of The Year. He had his own radio show and was now established as a very popular singing star. In 1954 there was a dispute during the filming of The Student Prince and Mario was sacked from MGM. He had already recorded the songs for the film. Edmund Purdom took over the role and mimed the singing voice of Mario Lanza. Mario was very depressed over what had happened and became a recluse. He apparently almost became bankrupt over some bad investments.

enade but he did not achieve the great commercial success of previous years. His final films included The Seven Hills Of Rome and For The First Time.

He had sung in more than150 concerts during his career and toured the UK, Ireland and Europe. He was signed to perform in a major opera but sadly died in a Rome hospital in 1959 at the age of 38 from a pulmonary embolism, after undergoing a controversial weight loss program.

Fans were in shock all over the world. Frank Sinatra sent a telegram of condolences to the family. His wife Betty died the following year.

They had three children but sadly they have also all passed on. Many of the famous opera singers of today acknowledge that they were inspired to become singers by Mario Lanza.

There have been attempts to produce a film on the life of Mario Lanza but to my knowledge it has not eventuated.

He has been referred to as "the second Caruso" - what a beautiful singer he was. At least we still have his recordings and films to enjoy.

Ghost of evil goat Billy is invoked ■ Mel Torrance, famous ghost sceptic and paranormal specialist and her camera operator Ree, set out on a ghost-debunking mission to a theatre, claimed to be haunted by the dead performer, Tomaso.

The spooky, spindly figure is triumphantly exposed by Mel as a large picture of Lady Gaga. The stage is set for Mel to exhibit her super, spectral skills.

Ree feels underappreciated. Mel enjoys glamour and status, while she slogs away at filming and editing. Mel insists they visit a famous haunted house, disappointing Ree, who has two free tickets to the zoo.

However Mel has accidentally booked into a Goat (rather than Ghost) Tour. Tess, the owner of Thorne Homestead, convinces them that her Goat tour is superior, gushing over her ‘rectangular, ravishing residents’.

Bad goat puns abound: ‘BarackGoat-Rama’ and ‘Goatus’ anyone?

But Tess’s dazzling litany of goat facts is dramatically interrupted.

The ghost of an evil goat, ‘Billy’, is unexpectedly invoked. He proceeds to inhabit the body of Ree, who terrorises Mel and Tess, charging and ‘maaaaaing’ menacingly.

Apparently Farmer Thorne used Billy as a ‘Judas’ goat, unwittingly leading his fellow goats to slaughter.

In revenge, he’s eliminated all members of the Thorne family except Tess, who is now in his sights.

How will Mel save Tess, rescue her friend Ree from demonic possession, and return Billy to oblivion? Will Ree finally receive the recognition she deserves?

Jess Ciancio (Mel) played her ‘straight’ role exceedingly well. Dax Carnay (Ree) was delightfully petulant as Ree and hilarious as Billy .

Dominik Shields (Tess), though competent, was a little over-exuberant – a veritable ‘Tigger’!

Chloe Towan and Nathan Fernandez claim their first work, inspired by the absurd humour of Monty Python and The Mighty Boosh, is ‘part horror, part comedy and part fun goat lecture’. It is all of that. I learnt many useless goat facts but enjoyed the very silly romp.

Extended it could perhaps be an entertaining pantomime for children.

■ Australia's disability-led production company, A2K Media presents The Wheelhouse as part of the 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Daydream

■ Having presented a sold out run of The Dark Side of the Room in the 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival, Con Coutis and Charlie Hill have developed their new show Daydream into "an hour of theatrical sketch comedy, with just a hint of stand up", being presented until March 31 at The Motley Bauhaus, 102 Scotchmer St., Fitzroy North.

Charlie likes theatre, Con likes meta-comedy and they both like sketch comedy. Con thinks theatre is pretentious, Charlie thinks meta-comedy is unoriginal. Con agrees, but promises this one will be different.

Daydream is directed by Con Coutis, a writer, comedian, actor and filmmaker who has recently commenced a Masters of Applied Linguistics.

Co-performer and co-writer Charlie Hill is an actor and filmmaker who co-starred in The Dark Side of the Room (Melbourne Fringe, 2019), and the original version of Daydream (MUST Cabaret Festival, 2019).

Stars: * * * ½ Review: Determined to ensure Superman's ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne aligns forces with Diana Prince with plans to recruit a team of meta-humans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions.

After having to leave at the conclusion of filming "Justice League" (in 2017) due to a family tragedy, then the film being taken over by writer-director Joss Whedon in post-production who ultimately produced a diabolical mess, original director Zack Snyder has finally returned, thanks to the huge global demands from fans around the world, to produce his own definitive vision, and the results are an epic, wildly spectacular entertainment ride.

Told in six chapters and an epilogue, right from the outset the differences are apparent, and throughout there's an abundance of material for fans to relish, and even though it may be the same story as before, this is a new movie with newly filmed and neverbefore-seen material, the characters and their back-stories are more fleshed out, the historical significance of the plot made more clear, superior action, conventionally defining moments between the action, ultimately, everything that made the original an incomprehensible and inarticulate mind boggling shambles has been eradicated.

Presented in the academy 1:33.1 screen ratio and clocking in at a massive 242 minutes, this is a grand, dark, humorous, exhilarating and thunderously entertaining comic-book superhero adventure after which legends Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Cyborg, The Flash and Aquaman, along with Lex Luther, Lois Lane, Alfred Pennyworth, Martha Kent and Commissioner Gordon, among others, will have fans wanting more, and will ultimately have its predecessor quickly disappear into the bowels of the waste-basket of cinematic history.

Stars: * * ½ Review: Upset that he has to share the room he loves with his grandfather, the young grandson decides to declare war in an atPredictable, formulaic, cliché driven and disposable family comedy actually has some genuine laughs throughout, but they are far and few between, but nonetheless, it holds solid interest due to a top notch cast which will be a major benefit to the older audience members as the silliness throughout keep the youngsters at bay, and without doubt an outing that would have been more suited by going straight to cable and not to cinemas.

The stellar cast includes Oakes Fegley as the war bearing grandson, however, it is veteran actors Robert De Niro as the grandfather, along with Uma Thurman, Cheech Marin, Christopher Walken and Jane Seymour who give the overall proceedings along the way much needed spark and genuine laughs, each and every one seemingly having a great time, most notably Christopher Walken as De Niro's lifelong buddy who, with the others, all join in on the war between old and young.

A far cry from the likes of such family comedy classics as "Home Alone" and "National Lampoon's Vacation," this actually has some heart and soul, but is all too fleeting and maybe difficult to find, a generic paper thin slice of entertainment, and even though this is a big step up from some of Mr. De Niro's other comedic efforts, when all is said and done, is it worth the price of admission? The answer is yes, just for the veteran cast having fun alone, but you may want to avoid the costs at the candy bar, because at the end of the day this is a fast food experience, all forgotten once it's over.

Rourke’s Reviews Slaxx ■ (MA). 74 minutes. Now streaming on Shudder.

Despite tonal changes that don't quite gel at times, leading to an occasional feeling of uneven pacing, this gory blend of crazy horror/ comedy and social commentary is executed with enthusiasm and conviction.

Set over one night at the most popular clothing store in the country, the story sees new employee Libby (Romane Denis) getting the education of a lifetime as she witnesses the rotting, ruthless nature behind the shining facade of her favourite clothing chain.

On top of that, Libby, along with everyone else, has to deal with the bizarre situation of a possessed, killer pair of jeans running amok.

Co-writer/director Elza Kephart, along with her regular scribe Patricia Gomez, surprises by providing more substance to what is a high concept premise.

Instead of creating something purely entertaining like Quentin Dupieux's Rubber (2010), Kephart savages not only the clothing industry and their long time abuse and exploitation of poor, foreign workers, but also the general public themselves, who are willing to live with that fact as long as they are able to access cheap, affordable clothes.

Online influencers don't escape their wrath either.

Denis is perfect as Libby, and is well supported by Sehar Bhojani as Shruti, and Brett Donahue as Craig.

The killer jeans are cleverly brought to life, and it's refreshing to see a film deliver its gore via practical effects.

While not perfect, this Canadian production again puts that nation's oddball cinematic sensibilities on full display.

Zack Snyder's Justice League

■ (M). 242 minutes. Now streaming on Binge.

This admittedly ambitious recut of Justice League by its original director, Zack Snyder (who left the production due to family tragedy) is, while far superior to the 2017 version, a frustratingly mixed bag.

Joss Whedon (The Avengers) took over when Snyder left, and largely rewrote and reshot the film, leading to a structurally weak, jokeheavy misfire that proved a grating, awful viewing experience.

Snyder's new version is better, but after a while the material doesn't fully involve like it should, with a commercial/music video flavour that undermines its serious intent

(there is a laughably bad use of pop songs, sometimes at the most inappropriate moments), and the director's annoying obsession with slow-motion is front-and-centre once more (Snyder is no Sam Peckinpah or John Woo).

Also, Snyder's decision to reformat the film to an old-school, TV style 1.33:1 ratio is completely wrongheaded, as it turns a project that wants to be epic into something that feels claustrophobic, and comes across more as a widescreen film that went through the old pan-andscan process in the bad old days of VHS. With most people now owning widescreen TVs, and a majority of TV shows shot to fit that format, it's odd that this isn't presented in 1.78:1.

Despite the mammoth running time, the gallery of new characters introduced aren't properly fleshed out, and it reeks of the Marvel method of putting new people onscreen so they can be connected to future sequels or spin-offs.

The whole thing reminds me of Superman II (1980), where Richard Donner was replaced by Richard Lester, who drastically reshot and changed what Donner wanted to do.

Like Snyder, Donner was able to return and put together his vision, but while he was able to produce something special (the Lester cut is a still lot of fun in its own right), Snyder brings a lot of sound and fury to his creation, but the result unfortunately rings somewhat hollow.

Vs Arashi

■ (PG). Now airing on SBS Viceland, Wednesdays at 6.05pm.

The long-running variety game show recently returned to SBS Viceland after a long hiatus, and its ability to entertain has not subsided one bit.

Hosted by legendary boy band Arashi (made up of Satoshi Ohno, Sho Sakurai, Masaki Aiba, Kazunari Ninomiya, and Jun Matsumoto, formed in 1999), the program sees the group face off against celebrity guests in colourful contests such as Cliff Climb, Kicking Sniper and Pinball Runner.

The banter between both group members and guests is funny and charming, and you can see why Arashi have managed to stay together for so long.

The off-the-wall challenges are loads of fun, and combined with the genuinely likeable group who front proceedings, and the antics that occur between them and their guests, helps make Vs Arashi absolutely delightful entertainment.

Murder Village - an improvised whodunit ■ The versatility and energy the cast of Murder Village bring to the show is undeniable. (Brianna Williams, Lliam Amor, David Massingham, Cameron Neill, Jason Grey, Mark Gambino).

Their talent and mirth when ad lobbing became comic elements shared with the audience.

But in this performance for the Comedy Festival, the audience wasn’t asked to vote for the victim or the murderer before the show and so we didn’t become part of the improvised mind games where one wonders how it will all be resolved.

What we did get was a longer introduction to the characters which became a little laboured.

The murder itself took place three quarters of the way through.

Most investigations begin with a murder if my recollection of the British murder mystery genre is anything to go by. And the murderer confessed without really being confronted.

The characterisations, of course, were delightfully extreme playing on the stereotypical forms found in, one would suspect, any British village which, somehow, never become depopulated despite the regularity of murders taking place – one every night some ten nights in a row.

This was an opportunity missed.

Participating in a vote before hand may have changed my perspective but that key element altered this reviewer’s outlook.

Cockatiel: Charlie Zangel ■ Claiming to be a body double of Nicole Kidman is no ordinary feat, yet there is some truth in the claim with Zangel’s performance of Cockatiel.

A fast moving revealing exposé of the tale of a young homosexual on the road to glory. He tells his story with a mix of live songs, sketches and storytelling of growing up queer in Melbourne.

In likening his life as a Cockatiel by spreading his wings and flying solo in this, his MICF debut, Charlie was quick to say that Cockatiels are not like magpies as they are full of crap. No so this performance, full of emotions, love and just everyday stories of his life.

Considerable inspiration for this performance stemmed from the months of lockdown; while losing last year’s Comedy Festival he has had the time to pen lyrics to wellknown tunes.

In coming out at an all-boys'

catholic school, he and his group of friends were challenged as to their sexuality. He retorted, “we’re not gay, we are just creative”, so they became known as “the creative poofs”.

However family, school and university had its moments, with highlights of a trip to Avalon Air Show with father and brother, hosting his primary school's somewhat irreverent Christmas production of Jesus Christ, This is your Life, finding his love in boyfriend Josh on Grindr, starting a Law course for one semester before transferring to Arts, and adding to the family with a loveable border collie pup during the pandemic. These and more are stories he shares and you certainly get to know Charlie as if he is one of your family.

His lyrics are well in keeping with his persona, in particular Cockatiel a cover of Missy Higgins, Grindr a cover of the band Haim, not forgetting his just released brand-new pop rock single Drama Queen (available now on Spotify and iTunes). Each shows us more of his versatility and creativeness and we only touched on a small portion of his character. There is a lot more to be had and it’s all factual and heart-warming.

I’m Not A Mime ■ The Butterfly Club presents Patrick Collins in I'm Not A Mime from April 5-18 as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

I'm Not A Mime explores identity, masculinity and the "invisible boxes society pressures us into", and contains micro-sketches with all-new stand-up and a deeply personal narrative.

Collins thinks this show will be his best one yet. "It had better be, otherwise I'm getting worse".

Australian Derby wide open

■ The Australian Derby to be run at Randwick this Saturday appears to contain many chances, plus Sydney's fickle weather.

Early favourite is the New Zealander, Mo'unga, in the care of Annabel Neasham, and deserves his chance after a good second in the Randwick Guineas to one of the fancies in Lion's Roar.

Mo'unga, by former Cox Plate winner, Savabeel, has been most consistent at his six starts, having won three of them with a second and a third.

He finished seventh in the Caulfield Guineas over 1600 metres behind, Ole Kirk.

After that he ran a very good third to Tagaloa in the Group Three, C.S.Hayes Stakes, at Flemington over 1400 metres.

He' is definitely the one to beat, and the journey won't worry him.

On the second line is another New Zealander, in Rocket Spade, trained by leading New Zealand trainer, Lance O'Sullivan.

He is a recent winner of the New Zealand Derby over 2400 metres, and is a big danger.

He has always shown potential, now he is blossoming having won four of his eight starts with four seconds.

With a win over the Derby distance, you won't have to worry about him staying the trip, and handles wet tracks.

On top of all that, he is in an astute camp.

The consistent Lion's Roar, another New Zealand bred three-year old, is with the powerful stable of John O'Shea in Sydney, and was most impressive in winning the Randwick Guineas over the 1600 metres, back on March 6.

He is an Irish bred three-year-old by the Irish stallion, Contributer, from a New Zealand bred mare, Minnaleo.

On that breeding alone, he won't have any trouble with a wet track or getting the trip.

He has won four of his seven starts with two seconds.

Another New Zealand bred three-year-old, is the John Sargent trained, Favreau, who has two of his eight outings with a third .

He was a winner at Kembla Grange in good style, over 1600 metres on February 19.

Sargent has a high opinion of the New Zealander, being by the prolific sire, Tavistock, the sire of the last year's Victoria Derby winner, Johnny Get Angry.

One that impressed me was the Caron Maher-David Eustace trained youngster, Grandslam, who won brilliantly, taking out the group two, Alister Clark Stakes, over 2040 Metres at Moonee Valley on the All-Star Mile Day at the Valley on March 13.

Prior to the win his form was patchy, after running a good third behind Ole Kirk, in the Caulfield Guineas.

At his next three starts he ran last in the Cox Plate, the very best race admittedly, then eighth of 14 behind Tagaloa at Flemington, in the C.S.Hayes Stakes, and before his win at the Valley he finished 12th in the Australian Guineas.

Ciaron Maher said after his emphatic victory in the Alister Clark Stakes, he had problems, but now appeared to be back to his best.

He was expected to do better than he did in last year's Victorian Derby, while he failed to flatter when running fourth in the Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Admittedly he got a long way back and was giving them at least 10 lengths start at the 600 metre mark, on a soft track.

II feel with a better ride he would be among the chances in the Australian Derby and he does handle the reverse way and a wet track won't worry him. However, I feel he is becoming an iffy proposition every time he steps out.

Great golf day ■ Yet again the Woodlands Golf Club and

Foundation along with the National Jockeys Association had a great day at the Club's big Golf Day. Once again, top organiser John Sweeney put together a great day.

We got the ball rolling around 11am, before hit off hosted by leading race caller Matt Hill.

I once again had the pleasure of interviewing some great racing people prior to the start of the big golf day.

Leading young trainer, Clinton McDonald, joined us with the likes of formerchampion jockey Gary Willetts.

We were also joined by former English jockey, Jason Swift, thegrandson of the great jockey, Scobie Breasley.

Many a funny story was related, especially the one that Gary told about that he had just bought an expensive pair of shoes, before he was to ride the great Manikato the next day in the Golden Slipper, which he won.

Gary was asked to walk the track before he had the ride on the champion, to assess the condition.

The sad story was that the ground was pretty damp and cut up, goodbye shoes.

The winners and grinners on the golf day, toasted themselves later in the evening.

The winning combination among the men was Gerald Stutterd, Jason Daniels, David Walsh and David Webster.

Runners-up were Jack Harrison, Richard Horbart, Patrick O'Connor and jockey Jason Benbow.

In third spot, Matthew Huber, Jim McDonald, Nathan Condon and Gary Sandler.

The Longest drive for Women was won by Brenda Uren on the Ninth Hole.

Jason Daniels won the Men's Longest Drive also on the Ninth.

In all a great day, and I can't wait until next year, God Willing, in being part of the big day.

Seven events at wet Kilmore

■ A compact seven event harness racing card saw a wet Kilmore open the week on Monday March 22 and it was Rockbank trainer Joe Pace victorious in the opening race on the program the Buds and Branches Pace for concessional reinspersons over 1690 metres with 4Y0 Hurrikane Kingcole-Spirit Of Fun gelding Wheres Seggy. Driven by Willam Pace, Wheres Seggy began swiftly from gate four to lead throughout, easily accounting for Cheddar Valley (one/one) by 2.3 metres, with The Gingerbreadman running home late from the rear for third 8.2 metres away. The mile rate 157.1.

■ Octogenarian Huntly trainer Bill White combined with Bendigo reinsman Rod Lakey to land the Fibreprotect From Hygain Trotters Mobile over 2180 metres with honest 6Y0 SkyvalleySuelaurian gelding Blis Valley.

Angling to be one/one from gate three as polemarker Strawberry Mouse led, Blis Valley raced by Ian and Sue White was off and running shortly after the start to assume control and after being rated to perfection, raced away on turning to greet the judge by 8.2 metres in advance of Surbiton Pretender off a one/one trip returning a mile rate of 2-05.8. Captain McCraw was third 12.5 metres back after going forward from three back in the moving line to join the winner on the home turn.

■ The 1690 metre Plenty Valley Retire Village 2Y0 Pace was an interesting affair with no less than five runners making their race debut and it was one of them, a Somebeachsomewhere-Distant Memory filly by the name of Beach Memories which blitzed her rivals in winning by a huge 29.5 metre margin.

Trained at Kialla by David Moran and driven

by Leigh Sutton, Beach Memories went forward from outside the front line to lead running into the first turn and was always travelling beautifully. Given her head approaching the final bend, Beach Memories bounded away to impressively defeat Relentless Me (gate five) which battled on gamely after racing exposed before dropping to trail her approaching the home turn. Another first starter Haveyoudaisy a Allamerican Ingot filly was third 3.5 metres back after a one/ one trip from gate three. The mile rate 1-56.7.

■ Bolinda's Brent Lilley kept the home flag flying after Heston Blue Chip-Special Needs filly Island Blue Chip scored in the 1690 metre TAB Long May We Play 3Y0 Maiden Pace much to the delight of Cohuna owner/breeders Bruce and Denise Morrison. Island Blue Chip led out from gate three being tackled by Ionthebullion (gate four) outside her, with Rod Petroff pressing forward to take over before Ross Payne (Island Blue Chip) came away from the inside to tackle for the lead once again and succeeding. In terrible conditions, Island Blue Chip defied all challengers to gain the day by 1.5 metres from Ionthebullion along the sprint lane and Run For Stikka (four back the markers) which raced exposed for the last lap. The mile rate 1-59.9.

■ The juggernaut keeps on rolling for Long Forest pair Andy and Kate Gath who produced yet another former Kiwi in 8Y0 Angus HallJusta Kiwi Girl gelding Justamollyarcher who led throughout in the Colin Redwood Memorial VSTA Trotters Handicap (2nd Heat) over 2150 metres. Driven by Kate for owners Neale Donnelley and close associate John Morihan, Justamollyarcher first up since January stepped swiftly from barrier three as the tapes released to pounce on the lead and that was the end of the penny section as he coasted to wire 22.5 metres in advance of Tetra which trailed. Sovereign Minx rallied strongly in the straight for third 2 metres away after racing in the open from a 10 metre handicap. The mile rate 2-07.3.

Cup Day at Ouyen

■ It was Ouyen Pacing Cup Day in the Mallee the day before (Sunday), the feature being the $14,500 Greggs Electrical Cup over 2423 metres going to Charlton based former NSW and Queensland trainer Shane Sanderson and reinsman son Ryan with 5Y0 Caribbean BlsterJennas Ranger gelding Blaster Ranger.

Beginning fast from gate three to head off polemaker Yoursnmine, Blaster Ranger had to wok to hold out the favourite Beat City (gate 4) outside him and Pembrook Charlie (gate 5) three

Given a breather through the middle stages, Blaster Ranger after a respectable fifth at Swan Hill during the week, was joined by the heavily backed stablemate Loorim Creek mid-race from near last with the pair dictating terms.

Appearing to be travelling easily prior to the home turn, Blaster Ranger was challenged by Egodan off a three wide trail on the back of Queens Angel on turning with the pair having the race to themselves.

Holding a slender margin approaching the wire, Blaster Ranger held on by a half head in an exciting finish from Egodan, with Dikerry another stablemate of the winner gaining inside runs from last on the inside flashing late to be third 1.3 metres back. In quarters of 30.6, 31.3, 30.5 and 29.2 after a lead time of 57.9 seconds, Blaster Ranger returned a mile rate of 1-59.2.

The Sandersons have had a sensational start after taking up residence at the Charlton Training Centre, chalking up five winners within a week.

First victory

■ Cranbourne raced on Tuesday and 11Y0 Christian Cullen-Atom Queen gelding Upanatom registered his first victory and 24th overall since winning at Devonport in November last year by taking the Mark Gurry and Associates Claiming Pace over 2080 metres.

Now in the care of Richie Caruana at Mt Cottrell, Upanatom at start number 152 enjoyed a sweet trip from gate four trailing the leader and raging hot favourite Change The Print which flew away from outside the front line. Angling away from the inside on turning, Upanatom ($22.80) wore down the pacemaker to record a head margin right on the wire in a rate of 2-01.7.

Vee Rock (three back the markers) was third 11.4 metres away.

■ Andy and Kate Gath provided another stable winner when nicely bred Falcon Seelster-Melita Bromac colt Holzhauer raced by a large group including Tanya Mielicki wife of Victoria's number one trots caller Dan, led throughout on debut in the 1609 metre Hygain 2Y0 Maiden Pace.

Travelling beautifully all of the way, Holzhauer give his rivals the slip on the final bend to win in a breeze, 9.8 metres in advance of Victory George which trailed. The hot favourite Captn Me was third very green in the straight a head away after racing in the open.

The rate 2-02.2.

■ Local part-owner/trainer Derek Harrington snared the Downbytheseaside @ Woodlands Stud Pace over 1609 metres with Rocks Roy, a 8Y0 Rocknroll Hanover-Narree Rose gelding.

Driven by Greg Sugars, Rocks Roy was given the run of the race from inside the second line trailing the poleline leader Illawong Phoenix before utilizing the sprint lane to gain the day by 7.5 metres in 1-56.7 from My Superannuation with raced exposed from the bell. Illawong Phoenix held down third 7.7 metres away.

■ Gordon duo Tim and Darby McQuigan landed the Cranbourne Fencing Pace over 2080 metres with 4Y0 Art Major-Triliner gelding Majaliner, returning a mile rate of 2-01.6.

Settling three back along the markers from gate three, Majaliner was another to use the sprint lane to prevail by a head from The Chancer (one/one), with Leosabi also using the sprint lane

for third a nose away after following the weakening leader Turquoise Stride.

Another local winner on the program was 4Y0 Roll With Joe-Deal To The Left mare Easy Rolling for Iona's Michael Hughes in the 2080 metre TAB Long May We Play Pace.

■ Driven by stable reinsman Rod Petroff, Easy Rolling led out from gate two before surrendering to Jeronimo Joe (gate six). Following a cosy trip, Easy Rolling used the sprint lane to register a 5.3 metre margin from Will And Andy (one/ three - outside leader home turn) and Sonnys Amazing who was always handy finishing 1.2 metres away. The mile rate 2-01.8.

Home bred winner

■ It was double day on Wednesday, with Melton racing in the afternoon and Shepparton at night.

Long time participant Steve Warren was in the winners stall at Tabcoro Park Melton following the victory of home bred Majestic Son-Auzzie Rose colt Majestic Matador in the DNR Logistics 3Y0 Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2240 metres.

Trained and driven by last year's Gordon Rothacker Medalist Ginger Gleeson, Majestic Matador at start number 12 moved from four back the markers to be one/one for the final circuit and after easing three wide on the final bend, ran home to defeat War Dan Strikes which led on turning after racing outside the pacemaker Beautiful Sunrise and going off stride as the post appeared. Beautiful Sunrise held third. The margins 1.6 by 5.1 metres in a mile rate of 205.4.

Plymouth Chubb began safely to lead from barrier three before surrendering to Everybodyluvskenny shortly after. Coming away from the markers approaching the home turn, Plymouth Chubb turned in a nice performance to gain the day by 5.4 metres over the leader, with Stingofawasp making up a huge margin after a slow start to be third 43.6 metres away.

■ Night Whisperer (gate four) moved three wide off a trail in the last lap on the back of Rockford Peach ahead of him to register a head victory from that runner, with Everysecondcounts 1.2 metres back third after following the pair. The mile rate 2-05.4.

Melton part-owner/trainer Charlie Mizzi's 4Y0 Tintin In America-Willow Rosenberg gelding Wotdidusaaay returned to the winners circle by taking the Pryde's Easifeed Pace over 2240 metres with Lance Justice in the sulky.

Taken back from gate five at the start to settle mid-field in the running line as polemarker River Patrol led, but copped plenty of pressure from both Flying Art and Endeavour Stride from the bell, Wotdidusaaay after going forward three wide solo in the last lap, was much too solid at the finish, greeting the judge by 5.9 metres from Hit The Sky which trailed the pacemaker using the sprint lane after being held up approaching the home turn. Flying Art came again in the straight for third a head away. The mile rate 58.5.

■ At Shepparton, Elmore owner/trainer Matthew Higgins' 6Y0 Mister Big-Nova Arama mare Lil Nova produced a best ever performance to snare the Neatline Homes Pace over 2190 metres in a rate of 1-59.1. Driven by Greg Sugars, Lil Nove raced uncovered from gate six for the entire trip, putting pay to the leader Sheza Mamacita on straightening to score by 2.5 metres from Lola Montez which was slightly held up on the back of the front runner before using the sprint lane. Pay Up Or Leave (three wide last lap from mid-field) was third a half neck away.

Local Arcadia trainer Patrick Ryan combined with Michael Bellman aboard the Sheron Park bred and raced 3Y0 Love You-Right Interest gelding Sweet On You to land the third heat of the Colin Redwood Memorial VSTA Trotters

Handicap over 2190 metres. Given a cosy passage three back in the moving line from 10 metres as Willdomxav led from barrier two, Sweet On You after easing three wide in the final circuit was too strong at the finish for Allwoods Sunbeam from last, with Bacardi Wood (one/one) third giving the Goulburn Valley the trifecta. The margins 1.4 by 6.5 metres in a mile rate of 2-04.5.

■ Norong part-owner/trainer/driver Mark Buckingham was successful with Asterism, a 4Y0 gelded son of Four Starzzz Shark and Rutherglen Ruby in the 2190 metre Saddleworld Shepparton Maiden Pace.

Settling four back in the moving line from gate six, Asterism after being sent forward three wide solo in the final circuit raced clear on turning to record a strong 3.9 metre margin in 2-03.7 over Wonga Lake which raced exposed. The pacemaker Loven Laughter was third 1.8 metres back.

■ Ballarat's Thursday fixture was interesting with two horses Aristocrat Chester and Helgart both winning 24 hours later after racing at Melton the previous day.

Aristocrat Chester, a 7Y0 Artiscape-Glory Glory gelding trained at Lawrence by Ken Whelan for himself and wife Merna was driven

by Lance Justice who without doubt provided the "drive of the night".

Settling at the tail of the field after starting from the extreme draw as Van Niekerk led from gate two, Justice weaved a passage in-between runners from five back the markers in the last lap to be one/two approaching the final bend.

Easing three wide at the straight entrance, Aristocrat Chester finished his race off well to record a head margin over Miss Chianti which trailed the pacemaker gaining a late split over the concluding stages, with Van Niekerk weakening for third 1.3 metres away. The mile rate 1-59.2.

■ Four year old Art Major-Heavenly Bread mare Helgart trained at Terang by Mattie Craven and driven by partner Sophia Arvidsson for a large number of stable clients went forward from gate four to lead and after setting a moderate speed was passed by Iamawingate from the tail with a dazzling burst of speed in the final circuit. Coming off the marker line on the home turn, Helgart finished determinedly to gain the day by 2.2 metres from Chief Safari (three back the markers) which used inside runs, with Rocknroll Cruiser 1.1 metres away in third place after following the winner throughout. The mile rate 1-58.7.

■ The fourth heat of the Colin Redwood Memorial VSTA Trotters Handicap over 2200 metres saw two former Kiwi's Madeakillin and Gil Favor having their first starts in Oz snare the quinella with 5Y0 Monkey Bones-Miss Invasion gelding Madeakillin the victor for Berringa co-trainers AJ and Beau Tindale in a mile rate of 2-03.4.

Driven by Josh Duggan, Madeakillin was given a charmed trip one/one from 10 metres trailing Gil Favor in the open and after easing three wide running into the final bend was too solid at the finish, scoring by a metre from a game Gil Favor and Georgias Pride which trailed the weakening leader Fox Force Five before easing off the markers and switching back to the inside in the shadows of the post to be 3.4 metres away.
