CAULFIELD MISSES OUT ON MILLIONS

Police officer charged

■ A Police sergeant has been charged following an internal investigation. The male sergeant, from Southern Metro Region, was charged with two counts of summary assault. The alleged incident is said to have taken place in November last year while the officer was on duty. He has been suspended with pay and will be summoned to appear at a Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

■ The new Climate Action funding stream of the City ofYarra’s 2021 Annual Grants will support projects from community groups or organisations that mobilise change in the community and encourage others to join the fight against the climate emergency, said a Council representative. A total of $80,000 is available to the most innovative projects. There is an emphasis on reducing carbon emissions. Applications closed last Sunday (November 29).

● Prahran Library opens at the new Prahran Square

Prahran Library opens in time for Summer

■ The Prahran Library and Stonnington Services and Visitor Hub is opening at Prahran Square just in time for summer. With Prahran Town Hall restorations taking place, the library will move to its temporary home in what has become the community heart of Prahran. The library joins the new Stonnington Services and Visitors Hub also opening at Prahran Square. Regular library services will be available at the new library, where guests can browse, borrow and read from popular collections, collect reservations and use free Wi-Fi. Jacqui Weatherill, City of Stonnington Chief Executive Officer, said the new Prahran Library @ Prahran Square will be a valuable community resource. “The new library will offer people of all ages and stages the opportunity to search for jobs, and a space to conduct research, experience new ideas and get immersed in books, while offering a sense of inclusivity and community,” Ms Weatherill said. “We know that during lockdown, locals missed spending time at their library, which is why Council has pushed hard to make this relocation happen as soon as possible. "The new Stonnington Services and Visitors Hub has been designed to be interactive and engaging and will be a flexible and inclusive space for all," Ms Weatherill said.

■ CAULFIELD has missed out on millions of dollars of lost opportunities in last week’s State Budget, says local MP David Southwick. “I want to talk locally. Locally we need a real opportunity going forward, starting with open space, public space,” Mr Southwick told the Legislative Assembly. “We have got the lowest amount in Glen Eira and we desperately need more. “I was very, very happy to be involved with the member for Oakleigh in the review of the Caulfield Racecourse Reserve Trust to get a new trust installed and to get a land management plan to be able to see what is possible at the Caulfield Racecourse. “There is 12 MCGs worth of space in the middle of that racecourse and it is underutilised. We have a plan for a botanic gardens-style running track around the perimeter, sporting fields, passive space, fishing—a whole range of things within the middle of that racecourse. We need money. “It is going to probably cost $20 million to $30 million for

MP lashes Govt on missed projects that; there is no money earmarked for that land management plan. “Schools—schools are so important. Schools like Caulfield South, Caulfield Primary, Caulfield Junior, Ripponlea - these schools have received no money. “There is a whole range of talk of millions of dollars’— $3.1 billion—worth of maintenance upgrades and new schools. “None of that has gone to the schools that I have just mentioned. “I know that we had to fight tooth and nail to be able to get new toilets a few years ago at Caulfield South Primary School because they were unusable. Now, these schools have not seen anything. “They are in desperate need of a shade sail so the kids can actually not get burnt when they are eating their lunch or are able to play sport when it rains,” Mr Southwick said.

● Brad Rowswell, Sandringham MLA ■ The work of Bayside Community Emergency Relief, has been commended by Sanringham MLA Brad Rowswell. The group was first formed as a Facebook page in January to assist with bushfire recovery efforts. “Now incorporated, with a local membership of some 6300, BCER has played an indispensable role in providing urgent support for our community affected by the first and then the second wave of COVID-19. “This year BCER has co-ordinated the provision of $1 million worth of support to local charities and the distribution of over 2000 COVID comfort packs to children fleeing domestic violence, isolated older Victorians and other vulnerable groups, and aged-care facilities, and contributions to the work of COVID emergency committees at Bayside and Glen Eira Councils as well,” Mr Rowswell told the Legislative Assembly.
