● Cr Louise Crawford is Mayor at the City of Port Phillip

■ ACTRESS Louise Crawford has been elected unopposed as Mayor of the City of Port Phillip.

The former City Homicide cast member is a Climate Change activist, and stood unsuccessfully as a Labor candidate for Brighton.

Cr Crawford had previously served as Deputy Mayor to veteran Councillor Dick Gross, who failed to win a seat for Canal Ward.

At Stonnington, outgoing Mayor Steve Stefanopoulos failed in his bid to win a seat in the South Ward. The new Stonnington Mayor was due to be elected on Monday night (Nov. 23) after The Local Paper went to press.

Contemporary artist Cr Gabrielle de Vietri was elected as the City of Yarra Mayor at a meeting held on Monday last week (Nov. 16).

Cr Claudia Nguyen is Deputy Mayor.

CrMargaret Esakoff was elected Mayor of Glen Eira for the 2020–21 Council year. Cr Jim Magee was elected Deputy Mayor.

● Cr Steve Staikos is Mayor at the City of Kingston ■ Cr Steve Staikos has been elected to lead the Kingston Council for the next 12 months.

Cr Staikos has served as a Kingston Councillor for 12 years and has been the Mayor on two previous occasions, in 2009-10 and 2017-18.

“I’m honoured and privileged to be chosen for this role for the third time,” said Cr Staikos.

The newly-elected Mayor reflected on the challenges brought about by COVID-19 and said helping the Kingston community to rebuild would continue to be a priority of this new Council.

South of the Yarra Like a family to most

● Robert Gibson ■ IT IS so good to see The Southern Cross masthead return after more than several decades.

The masthead was originally the brainchild of well-known and highly regarded independent publisher Peter Isaacson.

Affectionately known as “PI” by his staff, The Southern Cross was ostensibly his publishing company’s cash flow although it was more significantly valued as the inner southeast suburbs’ village voice.

The group of titles grew to cover numerous municipalities “south of the Yarra”.

PI used this term as a page two leader where he would, often controversially, focus on local issues, people and events.

Peter Isaacson Publications (the country’s largest independent publisher at the time of its sale to APN in the early 1990s) was like a family to most who worked in its longest standing office in Porter Street, Prahran.

My fortunate 38-year journalism career began as a cadet on The Southern Cross in the late 1970s.

Within this family theme, my first editor was Graeme ‘Jacko’ Johnstone.

Jacko, who later wrote A Place in The Sun for the Sun News-Pictorial, would spend countless after business hours sub-editing my fledgling attempts at writing.

This was despite him having a young family of three children at home with his lovely wife, Elsie.

My work at The Southern Cross included reporting rounds for the then Prahran and Malvern Councils, a plethora of local news articles and a weekly TV column which was a first for a suburban newspaper.

I wish The Local Paper’s Southern Cross Weekly the best of success and am thrilled to see PI’s original concept live again through its pages under the capable stewardship of Ash Long.

Dedication To Peter Isaacson ■ This first number of the Southern Cross Weekly Edition of The Local Paper is dedicated to the memory of Peter Isaacson.

Peter Stuart Isaacson, AM, DFC, AFC, DFM (July 31, 1920 – April 7, 2017) was an Australian publisher and decorated military pilot.

He was the owner of Peter Isaacson Publications, publisher of various trade journals and suburban newspapers including the Southern Cross and the Sunday Observer in Melbourne.

During World War II, he served in the Royal Australian Air Force as a pilot with RAF Bomber Command and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Force Cross and the Distinguished Flying Medal.

Peter was a mentor to many in the Melbourne media corps. In the 1990s, we were both directors of Allied Suburban Newspapers.

Brighton MLA James Newbury says a report reveals that a quarter “of working parents who have a child aged between five and 11 are currently experiencing high mental distress.

■ Clandestine Laboratory Squad detectives arrested two people last week following the execution of five search warrants as part of a drug investigation.

The warrants were executed, with the assistance of Drug Taskforce detectives and specialist units at properties in: ■ Turvell Place, Port Melbourne; ■ Sugar Lane, Port Melbourne; ■ Hope St, Brunswick West; ■ Larnoo Ave, Brunswick West; and ■ storage facility in Salmon St, Port Melbourne.

A 29-year-old Port Melbourne woman was arrested at the Turvell Place property and a 32year-old Port Melbourne man was arrested in a nearby street.

Police located a number of kilograms of drugs, a substantial quantity of glassware and precursor chemicals consistent with the manufacture of illicit drugs and what is believed to be up to $13 million in cash at a property on Turville Place.

Detectives remained at each of the properties as part of the investigation.

Anyone with information about drug importation or drug trafficking is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Instant millionaire ■ A Prahran man is looking forward to fulfilling his dream of moving interstate and buying a block of land near the beach after becoming an overnight Lotto millionaire last week.

The happy winner held one of the four Division One winning entries nationally in Monday and Wednesday Lotto draw 4026.

He takes home a prize of $1 million.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased his winning marked 50game entry at Prahran Market Lotto, Tobacco and News.

St Kilda, Prahran focus WINDSOR MAN

● Police want to speak with this man about an assault.

Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance following a serious assault in St Kilda. Investigators have been told a 36-year-old female and an unknown male were seated in an outdoor dining area of an Acland St business about 1.10am on Thursday, November 12. It is understood the unknown man was asked to leave by staff due to poor behaviour. The unknown man has then assaulted a 46-year-old man and the woman, with the woman receiving serious head injuries in the attack requiring surgery.

He is perceived to be 20-30 years old, with light brown hair and an English accent. ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing Windsor man Miguel Kavungu.

The 56-year-old was last seen on Chapel St, St Kilda about 2.50pm on November 16.

Police and family members are concerned for his welfare as he has a medical condition.

They have released an image of Miguel in the hope someone recognises him and can provide information on his whereabouts.

Miguel is African in appearance, about 168cm tall with a medium build.

He often wears soccer jerseys, shorts and runners, and is known to frequent the St Kilda and Prahran areas.

Anyone who sees Miguel or knows of his whereabouts is urged to contact Prahran Police Station on 9520 5200.

Neighbouring property owner Stephen Stanley Swirgoski took the matter to VCAT, arguing that the development at 40A Head St, 444, 444A St Kilda St, Brighton, was “overly ambitious”. The developers are Head Street Project Joint Venture Pty Ltd. Mr Swirgoski argued that the design response is flawed and fails to have sufficent regard to the site features and surrounding context. West Gate crash ■ Southbank police are appealing for witnesses to a collision in Port Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon last week (Nov. 18).

It is believed a white Ford tray ute collided with the barriers and four other vehicles in the outbound lanes of the West Gate Bridge just before 4.30pm.

The driver and sole occupant of the Ford sustained head injuries in the crash. Fortunately, no other people were seriously injured.

■ A driver who was seen on the wrong side of a divided road was found to be more than three times over the limit following a collision in Port Melbourne last week.

Police have been told the Yarraville man was travelling west on the wrong side of Williamstown Rd when the collision occurred about 10.30pm.

The 23-year-old’s vehicle struck a car travelling east which caused extensive damage to both vehicles.

The 37-year-old Tarneit driver from the vehicle on the correct side of the road was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

The driver from Yarraville returned a positive preliminary breath test before an evidentiary breath test furnished a reading of 0.166.

Police immediately suspended the man’s licence.

It is expected the man will be charged on summons with drink driving and traffic related offences.

Prahran Highway Patrol Senior Constable Kosmina said it is very lucky no one was killed or seriously injured. “In reality, the outcome of this collision could have been much worse,” Sen. Const. Kosmina said.

■ Expressions of interest have opened for Renew Fitzroy Street, a retail pilot program aimed at revitalising the St Kilda street by filling commercial vacancies.

Renew Fitzroy Street is being delivered in partnership by Port Phillip Council, Renew Australia and the Fitzroy Street Business Association. Port Phillip Council is contributing $75,000, which has been matched by the Fitzroy Street Business Association.

COVID restrictions eased ■ Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews made a statementy on Sunday (Nov. 22) about easing of COVID19 restrictions: “Three months ago, Victoria had 4293 active cases. Today we have one.

“It’s an incredible achievement.

And the clearest evidence there is of our determination to not only get on top of this virus – but to squash it.

“Back then, the goal – the hope – was something a little more ‘normal’ for Christmas.

“Today, because of the efforts of every Victorian, that’s exactly what we’ve been able to achieve.

“For those keen to get on and plan how many seats there’ll be around the table, I won’t waste another second.

“Today we can confirm you’ll be able to host up to 30 people in your home for Christmas Day. Babies under 12 months won’t count towards the cap.

“This change will come into effect from 11.59pm, December 13, just in time for catch-ups, and Christmas barbies – and for our Jewish communities, the closing days of Hanukkah.

“We’re also able to confirm some more immediate changes.

“From 11.59pm tonight, the number of visitors to your home will increase from two to 15 per day.

“That can be split across different times – 10 for lunch, and five for dinner – as long as people are sticking to a total of 15.

“Outdoor gatherings in a public place – the park, the beach – will increase to 50.

“For those couples who’ve had to delay their special day, weddings will increase to 150 people. The same number will apply to funerals and religious ceremonies indoors.

“There’ll be changes for our hospitality sector too.

“For smaller venues, the density limit will change to one person for every two square metres – up to 50 customers. QR code record keeping will be mandatory.

“For bigger venues, the density limit will stay the same, but the cap will increase to 150. Total venue capacity will also rise to 300.

“Cinemas, galleries and museums will also be able to host up to 150 people indoors.

“And in good news for community clubs, contact and non-contact sports can begin for adults as well as kids – 150 people indoors with a group size of up to 20 and 500 outdoors with groups of up to 50.

“Organisers will also be able to apply to host a public event. Different requirements and rules will need to apply, depending on whether it’s a school fete or a major sporting match.

“We’re also able to begin a phased approach for staff heading back to the office. From November 30, up to 25 per cent of workers will be able to attend onsite.

“I want to be clear though – unless you’re one of those people nominated by your employer – you need to keep working from home.

“We're also making some changes to the rules around masks.

“In short, you’ll still need to wear one when you’re indoors and on public transport – and where you can’t keep your distance.

“But if you’re outdoors and you can keep a safe distance, masks will no longer be mandatory.

Mental health crisis: Brighton MP ■ Brighton MLA James Newbury (Lib.) has spoken in State Parliament about the sensitive issue of youth suicide.

“Saving minds is just as important as saving lives,” Mr Newbury told the Legislative Assembly.

“Beyond Blue has found that one in five children between 11 and 17 are experiencing high or very high levels of psychological stress.

“A Victorian Student Representative Council Congress report has found there is a lack of consistent quality mental health education in the school curriculum, which is contributing to stigma and a lack of awareness around mental health.

“But this data has a human face. Only days ago young Athenie of Oakleigh took her own life. Her father has spoken out in the hope of raising awareness and said the isolation of COVID-19 and the exams were the cause.

“Addressing the mental health epidemic is urgent and requires far more significant intervention and awareness raising.

“Parents are doing it tough. A Melbourne Institute and University of Melbourne study found that Victorian parents have suffered a spike in mental and financial stress. Mental distress has exploded, rising from 7 per cent to almost one in five, 18 per cent,” Mr Newbury said.

The 27-year-old last contacted loved ones via text message about 4.40pm on Friday, November 13.

He told family he would be returning to his East Melbourne home that afternoon but has not been seen since.

Investigators have released an image of Aakash in the hope someone recognises him and can provide information regarding his current whereabouts.

“Kingston Council had to make the difficult decision to cancel its much-loved annual ‘Carols by Kingston’ event this year due to COVID-19 and the restrictions on mass gatherings but in its place, we’ve launched Kingston’s Tinsel Trail to bring the community together and help spread festive cheer.”

Recycling Reset ■ Port Phillip Council has launched a Recycling Reset campaign to help residents combat growing bin contamination linked to people staying at home more during to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An audit revealed the contamination rate of Port Phillip residential recycling bins has risen from 10 per cent in 2019 to 25 per cent in April 2020. Items such as soft plastics, garden waste and e-waste were found, resulting in additional processing costs and some bin’s entire contents being unable to be recycled.

Drug bust at Braeside ■ A multiple police agency investigation has uncovered a massive cannabis crop inside a Braeside factory on Thursday morning (Nov. 19).

The Caulfield Divisional Response Unit, Hume Crime Investigation Unit and Drugs Task Force members, along with the Queensland Drugs Task Force conducted a series of search warrants.

Investigators found more than 600kg of cannabis, with an estimated street value of $10million, inside a warehouse in MacBeth St. A man at the property fled onto the roof of the building and was apprehended by Police without incident.

At the same time, police arrested two men and found a substantial amount of money at a property in Anne Court, Sunshine West.

Simultaneously, Queensland investigators arrested two men and found two large scale cannabis crops inside warehouses in Loganholme and Slacks Creek.

The three men arrested in Braeside and Sunshine West are expected to be charged with offences relating to the commercial scale cultivation of a narcotic plant.

The Queensland suspects are expected to face similar charges.

Missing from Cheltenham ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing teenager Armani Lahoud.

The 13-year-old was last seen at a residence on Booker St, Cheltenham about 10.30am Wednesday (Nov. 18).

Police and family have concerns for her welfare due to her age.

Investigators have released an image of Armani in the hope that someone can provide information on her current whereabouts.

Armani is about 165cm tall, with a medium build, long brown hair, and brown eyes.

Some stations do it well. The community station 3CR is accomplished at these efforts, honed over more than 40 years.

Fine music station 3MBS-FM is currently having a crack at a ‘November Nudge’ to top up the kitty before Christmas.

Some of the efforts of Light 89.9 FM have been a bit cringeworthy. Obviously the instructions to the hosts was to ‘ad lib’ for 90 seconds, and urge listeners to phone with a donation.

The only possible ‘call to action’ with the repetitive begging and false urgency was to turn the dial to another station.

Peninsula Pals Meet David Greybeard ■ A large-scale public artwork of iconic chimpanzee David Greybeard, muse of groundbreaking scientist Dr Jane Goodall, is set to bring conservation and the environment into focus at Arts Centre Melbourne next month.

Australian artist Lisa Roet’s 9m x 12m sculpture commemorates the 60th anniversary of Goodall’s first research expedition and will be installed on one of the city’s most loved buildings – Arts Centre Melbourne’s Hamer Hall – on Thursday, December 3, before embarking on a world tour.

Designed to raise questions around humanity’s relationship with nature and our closest living animal relative, the artwork will be positioned with a hand outstretched to the viewer.

A QR Code will take people to the campaign website, where they will be immersed in a 3D experience of Gombe National Park in Tanzania.

With the support of the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, Lisa and a team of Victorian creatives, led by Airena, have been working throughout this year to create the sculpture while researching and showcasing ways to create major public artworks that have a sustainable environmental footprint.

Danny Pearson, Minister for Creative Industries, said: “Creativity is about making a statement and Lisa has worked for decades to use her creative voice to shine a light on issues around the environment and biodiversity.

■ The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic meant Melbourne electro-folk trio Dandelion Wine had to cancel the Australian and European launch tours for their new album Le Cœur.

Determined to turn a negative into a positive, vocalist/flautist Naomi Henderson got busy creating a homemade iso music video for the single Pilgrimage.

Initially intended to be viewed online, the puppetry-based music video for Pilgrimage has now found its way to the big screen and can be seen on November 29 at Smith's Alternative as part of the Canberra Short Film Festival.

There were over 700 entries for the Canberra Short Film Festival and Pilgrimage was one of 216 films chosen to be screened.

"I'd just put so much work into it", explains Naomi, who became director, videographer and story writer of the music. "I wanted as many people as possible to see it".

Pilgrimage is a song about longing and distance that features female vocals, cello, "glitchy electronics", renaissance lute and Persian frame drums.

The puppetry based video was created using four hand made woollen Monsterlings, made by artist and friend Kirsten Honey and given as a gift to Henderson's daughter.

"There were quite a few of the kids' things I used in the video actually, and heaps of repurposed rubbish", laughs Naomi, who points out the luck of being a hoarder when keeping things for her children's arts and crafts, The music video, created entirely in lockdown using what was available at hand, was made possible by the initiation of the City of Maribyrnong's TogetherApart Rapid Relief Fund, a grant designed specifically for local artists to create online content.

■ Story as performance is not an easy choice for an actor. I have seen a few attempts at the genre in 12 years of reviewing and only one still commands memory space filled with vivid recall and undiminished respect for the actor. It is one of the10 best of 900 plus performances reviewed by me. It was Robert Menzies, veteran of stage and film and his performance of Samuel Beckett's story, The End. I saw it at the Beckett (no connection) Theatre, Malthouse in 2011.Thus I was very interested when Conor Mission sent me Where The Cherry Blossoms Bloom his online offering in the 2020 Melbourne Fringe for me to review.

Conor, alone, with a gentle Home Counties accent. almost apologetic at the outset of his 45-minute story about his Gran, Annie and the way she told stories; the principal one being her meeting with Henry whom she eventually married.

Simple premise to launch his performance, one that is clearly very personal and whilst ultimately touching; because of Gran's ending; an ending I have had experience with.

Whilst it is touching, Conor never allows his narrative a dusting of suspect sentimentality.

Conar's story travels parallel with another sub~story with the entrance of a young woman, Maya, and here the simple premise presented me with a very real emotional complication.

The parallel is the way Gran met Henry and Conor and Maya begin their relationships; love of similar books . I call the character I was watching Conor because he and I, alone, are sharing his very personal story. Conor loses his slightly apologetic manner and the stories Conor, his Gran and Maya share moves to an unpredictable close.

With Conor, the actor and his Where The Cherry Blossoms Bloom I have found someone who took the difficult choice and made it art.

Inhabiting a space between filmic artwork, devotional poetry, performance and music video, Fistimuff is presented as a long-form self-portrait.

Barry destabilises commonplace experiences of domesticity and the human body to propose an altogether more open-ended, fluid, and multifaced understanding of self.

As the latest iteration of their cyclical working method. Barry will produce a new performance work for Heide to be shown on the closing weekend of the exhibition.

Theatre Works looks to 2021 ■ Theatre Works heads into 2021 after a complete transformation of their theatre space, allowing the organisation to restart operations with an innovative approach to COVID Safe live performance into the foreseeable future.

An intimate in-the-round setting for chamber performance of all genres and forms, Glasshouse comprises 12 custom made Perspex booths that put the comfort and safety of audience and performers at the forefront, without compromising the experience at the theatre.

What’s On LGBTQIA+ artists

■ Melbourne Fringe Festival is presenting a varied program of performances and events from LGBTQIA+ artists, after presenting 43 per cent of their 2020 grant pool of $305,000 to LGBTQIA+ performers.

■ Perth-based video platform Normal Place is presenting Perthonalities, a diverse season of live-streamed shows from Perth's creative underground as part of the 2020 Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Outdoor restaurants, breweries, and wineries will be limited to 50 per cent outdoor capacity. For non-essential businesses that are permitted to operate indoors, including retail stores, offices, and personal care services, occupancy will be limited to 25 per cent.

Restaurants, breweries, wineries, bars, and all other non-essential retail establishments must close from 10pm to 6am.

It is critical that Angelinos do their part to slow the spread so that we can avoid imposing additional restrictions or moving to another safer at home order.

We have been successful in the past at preventing transmission. We can do it again.

Crude behaviour at Yelp ■ A female Yelp employee was on the phone with a small business owner, making a sales pitch for Yelp's advertising services, when the man on the other end of the line announced that he planned to masturbate while thinking of her.

Her manager urged her to continue with the sales pitch. The crude behaviour was all the more reason for the saleswoman to take the business owner's money, she recalled her manager saying "because he's gross."

Multiple other Yelp insiders also said they either felt pressure to interact with sexually inappropriate business owners or witnessed other reps doing so.

Earlier this summer, Yelp announced a plan to blacklist abusive businesses after years of reps experiencing racist and sexist abuse. It's just one example of the intense pressure employees in Yelp's sprawling local sales organisation say they face.

A Business Insider has spoken to 21 current or former employees of the company for a recent investigation into Yelp's sales practices and culture.

These sources painted a picture of a culture that's part boiler room and part fraternity house, where a stifling pressure to hit sales targets is always in the air.

"Everything is dependent on my success with revenue," said a current Yelp employee. "If I'm not closing, I'm treated like I mean nothing to this company and my self-worth suffers immensely."

Market is unstable ■ The news that Pfizer has developed what appears to be a viable Coronavirus vaccine has been taken as good news pretty much everywhere except, maybe, in Zoom's presumably virtual boardroom. The development had an immediate effect on stock prices at companies that have thrived as people were forced to stay at home to flatten the curve of new infections. According to CNBC, Zoom shares were down more than 15 per cent in premarket trading as hopes were raised that people won't spend the rest of their lives on videocalls. Amazon shares dropped 3.4 per cent, and Netflix fell by 5.4 per cent. However, despite the hit, it's fair to say 2020 has still been pretty good for Zoom stocks which have still shot up in value by 635 percent during the year so far.

■ While New York City was boarding up in anticipation of election-related unrest, many private citizens were taking matters into their own hands and hiring private security. Patrick McCall, who owns a private investigation and security firm McCall Risk Group, told the Wall Street Journal that his typical clients are operators of retail or office buildings, corporate executives, or celebrities. Leading up to the election, however, most of the people requesting his services were regular individuals. "We've gotten a significant amount of calls in the past week," McCall told the Wall Street Journal. "Seventy per cent of those calls now are from regular, average citizens."

48-year-old Pasquale Cosenzo, a computer programmer who works in Midtown Manhattan, said that he hired McCall Risk Group so that he could feel safer on his daily commute.

Cosenzo said that given the uncertainty surrounding the presidential election and the rise of violent crime in New York City, he's not likely to give up private security any time soon.

■ You spent Sunday on the couch, skimming your social feeds and watching makeover shows on TV. Monday at work was a different story; your job involves creative problem solving and other difficult mental activities. Does the extra brainpower you use at work burn more energy than your Sunday spent watching Fixer Upper reruns? "The basic answer is yes," says Ewan McNay, an associate professor of psychology and behavioural neuroscience at the University of Albany.

The brain, unlike any other part of the body runs exclusively on the sugar glucose, and strenuous cognitive activities require more glucose than simple ones, says McNay, who has studied how the brain uses energy to perform work.

During a difficult memorisation task, for example, the parts of your brain involved in memory formation will start consuming more energy, but other brain areas will show no such increase. "You will in fact burn more energy during an intense cognitive task than you would vegging out watching Oprah or whatever," he says. But in the context of the average person's overall energy expenditure, the difference in calorie burn from one mental task to another is a tiny amount.

Local cops charged ■ All four ex-Minneapolis cops charged in the George Floyd case will be tried together, and the trial will be televised, Judge Peter Cahill ruled Thursday morning. Lawyers for Derek Chauvin, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao wanted separate trials as they believed each officer played a vastly different role in the Memorial Day death. In pre-trial motions, they essentially blamed each other for Floyd's death. But Cahill ruled that a joint trial would "protect witnesses from reliving the trauma of Floyd's death at multiple trials." He said a single trial would be easier on the Floyd family, prevent evidence overlap, minimize the risk of prejudicing jurors, and be more convenient logistically for witnesses.

Rather than moving the trial to a neighbouring area, it will take place in March in downtown Minneapolis, although Cahill said those details could change. The jury will be sequestered to ensure their safety, Cahill ruled. The judge decided to allow cameras in the courtroom largely because the coronavirus pandemic would prevent many people, including reporters, from being in the courtroom.

Magazine ■ I think my first memory of hearing a Fats Domino song was Ain't That A Shame back in 1956.

I loved the deep resonance of his voice and the strong beat behind the song.

Rock and Roll was new to us pimply faced teenagers and we couldn't get enough of the American rock songs which became part of the soundtrack of our lives.

Antoine Dominique ‘Fats’ Domino Jnr was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1928.

Antoine studied piano at the age of nine. He left school to work in a factory so that he could play piano in the bars at night.

Antoine mastered the Boogie Woogie techniques and the classic Rhythm and Blues piano style.

In 1938 he married his childhood sweetheart, Rosemary. He became a father and almost lost his hand in a factory accident.

Antoine was given the nick-name of ‘Fats’ and it stuck. He joined trumpeter Dave Bartholomew's band.

Dave recognised the special talent of Fats and arranged a contract for him with Imperial Records.

In 1949 Fats Domino had his first million selling hit song The Fat Man and Dave became his manager.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said that the award was a reflection of the significant efforts made by Australians to help drive the recovery of communities and the tourism sector more broadly following the bushfires.

"There is no doubt that this has been the most challenging year our industry has faced, having to first deal with the impacts of last summer's bushfires followed directly by a shutdown of travel due to COVID-19," Ms Harrison said.

"But in response to these challenges, we really have seen the best examples of the Australian spirit shining through particularly as people across the country rallied behind those communities both directly and indirectly impacted by the bushfires, with so many extending offers of support.

"That spirit of resilience has really endured as recovery efforts have continued, despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is heartening that this has been recognised as part of these awards."

Australia is one of 30 destinations, inspirational individuals and tourism projects selected by Lonely Planet to shine a light on pioneering sustainable

practices, efforts by local communities towards restoration and the importance of diverse representation in all aspects of travel.

"Travel in 2021 and beyond will be a much more considerate exercise than it has been ever before," Lonely Planet CEO Luis Cabrera said.

"With travellers cautiously re-engaging with the world and focusing on ensuring their impact is safe and positive for host communities, we have decided to highlight destinations and individuals that truly enable visitors to make genuine contributions through regenerative travel."

Lonely Planet hopes the Best in Travel 2021 awards will champion those who make travel a force for good at a time when COVID-19 has disrupted and devastated the industry worldwide, affecting so many in the industry.

Rather than delivering a destination bucket list, Lonely Planet has focused on how people travel now: outdoors, in family groups, purposefully, with careful attention to the communities they will explore.?

"We are taking the chance to reemphasise what we are here for and why our mission remains to be a trusted travel companion. One that inspires, informs, and guides, while being in sync with travel wants and needs," said Cabrera.

Lonely Planet started the process for the 2021 Best in Travel list by seeking?nominations from their vast community of staff, writers, photographers, videographers, bloggers, publishing partners and more.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, they paused the process but observed the conservation surrounding travel take a decisive shift. As a result, Lonely Planet crafted this new approach to the awards, tailored for the world of travel in 2021.

In addition, Lonely Planet is inviting readers to add nominations for their favourite people and places that are shaping the future of travel this year and beyond. Voting is open from today on the Best in Travel website and Lonely Planet will announce the Reader's Choice Awards winners in January.

Stars: ***½ Review: Set in the Victorian era in the fictional town of Cobbleton, toymaker Jeronicus Jangle's fanciful inventions burst with awe and wonder around the town, but when his trusted apprentice steals his most prized creation, it's up to his equally bright and inventive granddaughter and a long-forgotten invention to heal old wounds and reawaken the magic within.

Delightfully sumptuous family musical fantasy over flows with an abundance of enchanting characters, entrancing songs (by the Oscar winning John Legend and others), striking dance numbers and bewitching animation, however, despite any flaws, which are pointless going through, this wildly excessive and high spirited extravaganza will be a more than welcome treat for children and families, not only this Christmas, but for many more to come, and with repeated viewings for the kiddies throughout the year.

The excellent cast includes the Oscar winning Forest Whitaker as the elder, embittered and disillusioned toymaker Jeronicus Jangle, Keegan-Michael Key as the once trusted apprentice, "Downton Abbey's" Hugh Bonneville as the bank manager, a sprightly and energetic Madalen Mills as the granddaughter, and Ricky Martin as the voice of the toy matador, Don Juan Diego, there's is no one standout performance as they are each on an impressive even balance throughout, though the ultimately revealed key toy in the puzzle will have parents scrambling through toy shops for it as a Christmas present.

Part "The Greatest Showman," part "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" part "Wall-E" and even in part "E.T: The Extraterrestrial," among others, the set design, costume design and period detail are all eye popping, as is the added infusion of pop up and to a point steam-punk animation, and even though it breaths a familiarity and borders on sweet and sugar cliché, all this adds up to a magically fun, colourful, silly, poignant, thrilling and ultimately 'truly scrumptious' sing-along entertainment feast.

Delightfully charming and sparkling CGI animated fantasy that the kiddies will relish, a richly woven tapestry of family roots and the importance of family filled with an abundance of laughter, thrills, toe-tapping songs, quirky characters and poignancy, and even though it doesn't quite reach the benchmark heights of the best of DisneyPixar, only by a very small margin, it proves beyond any doubt that the Disney-Pixar stable aren't the only ones who can produce high quality family fare, and as a result 'Over The Moon' successfully enough grasps the same heights in emotion, overall entertainment and storytelling.

Featuring a stellar voice cast that includes Sandra Oh, Glen Keane, Ruthie Ann Miles, John Cho, Brycen Hall, as with all animated adventures the real stars are those unseen faces behind-the-scenes that bring our beloved characters to a vibrant and high spirited life by successfully replacing the computer chip to a beating heart.

Details: 2017/MA15+/104 Minutes/Stars: ***1/2 Review: Six astronauts aboard the space station study a sample collected from a Mars probe that could provide evidence for extraterrestrial life on the Red Planet, but as the crew begin to conduct research, a life form emerges that could prove more intelligent than anyone ever expected.

A crackling sci-fi, adventure, horror, thriller that pays homage to its origins with nail-biting thrills and chills thanks to a smart and lean screenplay, taut direction, claustrophobic setting, solid performances from a top notch cast and a creature that is sure to raise the hairs on the back of your neck.

Clearly inspired by such greats as IT! The Terror From Beyond Space (1958), Event Horizon (1997), Gravity (2013), and most of all, Ridley Scot's ground-breaking Alien (1979) ... with a touch of The Twilight Zone, this knows exactly what it is doing, where this has been before and exactly where it's going, and you would be doing yourself an injustice if you didn't take the journey.

Rourke’s Reviews Possessor Uncut

■ (R). 104 minutes. Opens in selected cinemas November 26.

Brandon Cronenberg, son of legendary film-maker David Cronenberg (Scanners, Dead Ringers), showed he was cut from similar cloth with his impressive 2012 feature film debut, Antiviral (***½).

It has taken quite some time, but Cronenberg Jr. finally delivers his sophomore effort in Possessor, and confirms that he is a talented director in his own right.

Those with delicate constitutions will know what they're in for straight away, as we see a young woman, after inserting an electrode into the back of her skull, which appears to change her personality, gruesomely stabbing a corporate high roller to death, before meeting an equally violent death at the hands of police.

What we discover is that the woman was 'possessed' by Tasya Vos (Andrea Risborough), an experienced assassin who, via cutting edge technology, is able to enter a person's mind and control them, allowing her to carry out her missions with the perfect cover.

Vos works for a secret, possibly government funded, agency, with the program headed by Girder (an amusingly cast Jennifer Jason Leigh), who carries out post-possessor examinations to ensure Vos has properly left her host's reality and returned to her own.

It is becoming apparent that these 'trips' have had a large psychological toll on Vos, who is finding it harder to separate other realities from her own, no more evident than in her relationship with her exhusband and young son.

As Vos' latest assignment begins, where she'll 'enter' the mind of Colin Tate (Christopher Abbott), a lowlevel functionary who is about to marry Ava Parse (Tuppence Middleton), the assassin will be able to eliminate her billionaire father John Parse (Sean Bean), but Vos' already fractured mind will be pushed beyond the limit.

Cronenberg compellingly presents a world in which various, ever-evolving technology has changed the way people think, distorting personal or political viewpoints, their moral compass, and even what's considered real life, and potently takes those ideas to the next level.

He also explores identity and gender fluidity in effectively disorientating fashion.

Risborough (Mandy) is absolutely terrific, conveying Vos' anguished mental disintegration with utter conviction. Abbott (Piercing, It Comes At Night) is equally good, particularly when he's expressing

Vos trying to fit into Tate's 'skin', while Bean (Game Of Thrones) is convincingly ruthless and boorish as Parse. Production values are first-rate, with particular praise going to cinematographer Karim Hussain (Antiviral) and production designer Rupert Lazarus (Diary Of The Dead). Possessor is a wild ride, and Brandon Cronenberg imaginatively makes sure that it leaves a lasting impression on those who dare take that ride.

Freaky

■ (MA). 101 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

Christopher Landon seems to be making a career by riding the wave of pop culture nostalgia, and his latest thinly-veiled imitation is Freaky, a slasher comedy that proves far less fun that what it should be. After a deliberately knowing opening sequence that blends Friday The 13th and Scream, in which the notorious Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn) slaughters a group of promiscuous teens, the audience is introduced to Millie (Amber Heard lookalike Kathryn Newton), a shy high school student who is of course bullied by her peers, and has a secret crush on the class hunk, Booker (Uriah Shelton). One night Millie encounters the Butcher, who just happens to use a magical knife to try and kill her. The wounding causes the two to switch bodies, and while Millie has to convince her two best friends of the situation, the Butcher begins to enjoy the new challenge of murdering in a girl's body. Landon, who wrote Disturbia (a rip-off of Rear Window), and helmed Happy Death Day (a slasher version of Groundhog Day) and Happy Death Day 2U (Scream meets Groundhog Day meets My Science Project), gleefully pilfers from many horror outings, then attaches it to the wellworn body swap formula, notably Disney's Freaky Friday (1976), and Vice Versa (1988), starring Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage.

Landon also appears influenced by the clever, criminally under-seen thriller Salvage (known here as Gruesome). While Landon delivers a surprising amount of graphic gore, he's more hesitant in exploring gender identity, and never once takes a genuine chance in taking the premise to crazy extremes.

Even worse, he seems to take the material too seriously at times, in particular a scene that's as jarringly maudlin as the one that turns up near the end of Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Alan Ruck even makes an appearance as a teacher). Vaughn camps it up, but never really inhabits Millie's character, while Newton is disappointingly one-note. Freaky should've been 80 minutes of funny, bloody, genre-savvy fun, but instead does nothing but remind you of many earlier, better movies.

■ Two of Australia's most outspoken singer-songwriters, Shane Howard (Goanna) and John Schumann (Redgum and The Vagabond Crew) have decided to collaborate on a new national anthem. "Enough is enough. We decided to focus our attention on the need for a truly great national anthem that everyone will love to sing," said Shane.

Matt Hill is ‘top of the pops’

■ Victoria's number one racecaller Matt Hill continues to excel in the calling field after a strenuous number of race meetings at top level over the past three months.

He had a busy time calling the Carnival behind his trusty binoculars at Caulfield, Moonee Valley, Flemington and Sandown.

He didn't miss a beat.

Topping it off with three very close finishes at Sandown, to finish on a high note, now looking for somewhere to lay down.

I am proud to say I am a good friend of the very likeable caller, who always puts his heart and soul into very call.

I go back a way when Matt came into the Greyhound Board, with his mother. when I was writing their Journal at the time, wanting to become a caller.

Matty started off calling a couple of Plumpton meetings where two greyhounds challenge each other to see who was the quickest.

He learnt quickly, going on to win a scholarship with Sky Channel in Sydney.

It wasn't long after that he became second in charge to Ian Craig in Sydney, and took over from the master in great style.

He spent around five years, calling in Sydney and in top fashion.

When another great caller, Greg Miles, gave it away they snapped him up to be number one.

In between racing he has called the Olympics and other world events.

I recall just prior to him getting the number one job at Racing Victoria, he wanted to give the horses a miss, and call AFL football.

Now here is the ripper, at our racing personality dinner, Sportsbet was offering big odds about him getting the number one position, because what he told me and the Press, football was going to be his go.

The rest is history, he changed his mind and all for the betterment of racing, but not my pocket.

I have since forgiven him, for not looking after me on that decision day.

He now rates with the best of them in the calling caper: going back to Eric Welch, Bert Bryant, Bill Collins, Ray Benson, John Russell, Joe Brown, Frank O'Brien and Greg Miles.

His accuracy, clear annunciation, and timing is first-class.

Above all, he is a great young bloke, whom I am proud to call a friend.

The winner of the Jericho Cup will take home a cheque for $50,000 for its connections, with the runner-up, picking up $50,000, and $30,000 going to the third placegetter.

The Jericho Cup commemorates the race which was originally conducted back in 1918, on the eve of a major offensive by the Australian Light Horse Brigade against the Turkish Empire.

The inaugural Jericho Cup was won the legendary horse, ‘Bill the Bastard’ arguably, Australia's greatest war horse.

Affectionately named that by the Australian Troops, because only one person could ride him, a top Major in the Australian contingent.

Jericho Cup

■ Following up on my recent column with reference to the popular Jericho Cup this year to be run at Warrnambool over the 4600 metres.

The race last year won by the brilliant jumper and stayer, Ablaze, trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, who won the Grand Annual Steeple at Warrnambool over 5500 metres, with him.

The Executive Manager of Racing with Racing Victoria, Greg Carpenter, said the Jericho Cup has rapidly become one of the iconic races on the Australian racing calendar.

We are very much looking forward to the third edition which will be held this weekend.

■ Despite a number of things stopping racegoers attending to meetings in country areas, the clubs are busy getting ready for some great meetings over the festive period.

Stawell will be the first club to swing in top action on Saturday, December 5, a top spot at the foot of the Grampians.

This is followed on the next day at Werribee at Spendthrift Park, the highlight being the Werribee Cup over 2000 metres.

It is always a popular spot and only an hour out of the city, if that.

Ararat race on Tuesday December 6, not far from Stawell, is at a lovely country track.

Down the road at Terang, they will hold their pre-Christmas meeting on Wednesday, December 9. Seymour Races are on Thursday December 10 straight down the Hume.

Then there is Wangaratta on Saturday December 12, always a good day.

One of the most popular meetings is the preChristmas day at Bendigo, around an hour-anda-half out of Melbourne at their magnificent track, at the Nursery of Champions on Sunday December 13.

The Bairnsdale races are on Wednesday December 16, prior to Christmas.

Then Benalla will run their pre-Christmas day on Saturday December 19, straight down the Hume Freeway.

Next is Horsham in the Wheat Belt, on Sunday, December 20..

Another of the most popular meetings is the meeting at Sale on Sunday December 20, at their beautiful green wattle track.

Geelong only just over an hour's drive from Melbourne will race prior to Christmas on Tuesday December 22.

Breeders Crown Finals at Melton ■ A gigantic meeting was held at Tabcorop Park Melton on Saturday (Nov. 21) featuring eight rich Australasian Breeders Crown Finals over 2240 metres.

As expected the state’s leading stable of Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin dominated with three winners during the evening.

■ Majestic Son-Illawong Moonshine colt Cover Of Darkness (Jodi Quinlan) was victorious in the 3Y0 Trotting Colts & Geldings, leading throughout to register a two metre margin in 157 over Red White And Bloom (three back the markers – three wide home turn), with Cracker Jet third a nose away after thrilling the winner.

■ Extremely talented Art Major-Macy Lila colt Major Moth (Damian Wilson) landed the 2Y0 C and G Final in 1-55.8. Beaten from the pole by stablemate Act Now (gate two), Major Moth enjoyed a sweet passage on the back of the leader and after easing away from the inside on the final bend, put the race away in a couple of bounds, scoring by 4.4 metres from the pacemaker. Bar Room Banta was third 4.9 metres back after trailing the pair.

■ The 2Y0 Fillies Final looked a match between the stablemates Tough Tilly and Ladies In Red unbeaten in six previous outings and it was Ladies In Red the victor.

Driven by David Moran, Ladies In Red bided her time mid-field from gate two on the second line as several of her rivals made forward moves.

Sent alight racing for the bell to park outside Tough Tilly, the pair raced away in the last lap engaging in a two horse war with neither giving an inch.

Gaining the upper hand over the concluding stages, Ladies In Red greeted the judge by 2.4 metres in 1-54.5 from Tough Tilly who certainly wasn’t disgraced. Jo Rocks held down third 1.2 metres away after trailing the leader.

■ Quaker Jet-Im Ready Set filly Im Ready Jet snared the 3Y0 Trotting Fillies Final for Cardigan co-trainers Anton Golino and Jack MacKinnon.

Driven by Jason Lee, Im Ready Jet was quickly after from inside the second line to settle one/one, before going forward to lead hitting the back straight on the first occasion.

Coasting for the rest of the journey, Im Ready Jet had a neck to spare on the wire from roughie Ofortuna along the sprint lane from three back the markers. Queen Of Crime was third 4.4 metres back after leading out from the pole and trailing the winner. The mile rate 1-57.2.

■ Romsey trainer/driver Chris Svanosio’s Majestic Son-Rainbow Maori gelding Watts Up Majestic gelding was the winner of the 2Y0 C & G Trotting Final in a rate of 2-00.3.

Given the run of the race on the back of the poleline leader Have No Fear from gate three, Watts Up Majestic was able to avoid Have No Fear who galloped on the home turn and dashed clear in the straight to record an easy 9.8 metre victory from Don’t Care which ran a huge race after going forward from four back to race parked. Bullion Harry (one/two) was third 1.7 metres back.

■ Monegeetta trainer David Miles’ in-form Bettors Delight-Paintball filly The Panthiest was victorious in the 3Y0 Fillies Final with Greg Sugars in the sulky.

Trailing the poleline leader and hot favourite Sweet Louise after starting inside the second line, The Panthiest using the sprint lane to perfection prevailed by 1.7 metres from Sweet Louise, with roughie Final Peace third 6.8 metres away after trailing the pair. The mile rate 154.7.

■ It was a NSW victory in the 3Y0 C & G Final when Paul Fitzpatrick’s Kiwi bred Bettors Delight-Zeta Bromac colt Zeuss Bromac (Kerryn Manning) led all of the way from the pole to register a 5 metre margin over Jilliby Nitro which trailed. Rank outsider Jemsons Pet (three back the markers) was third 2.7 metres back. The mile rate 1-53.7.

■ It was a blow-out result to the 2Y0 Trotting Fillies Final with Maree Caldow’s Sangreal (Father Patrick-Solar Flash) gaining the day in 200.3 for stand in reinsman Daryl Douglas.

Hamilton's octogenarian Jim Barker and grand daughter Jackie were victorious with 6Y0 Artistic Fella-Bunny Lebowski gelding Creative Lad in the GMG Financial Group Pace over 1609 metres, returing a mile rate of 1-58.6. Racing outside the pacemaker Clem McArdle (gate six) from gate three, Creative Lad showed plenty of tenacity to register a tough neck margin over Gracia Cullen (one/one), with Surbiton Hartbreak third a half head away third in a thrilling finish.

■ Nanneella trainer Greg Albert brought up two wins in succession with improving 5Y0 Majestic Son-Hold That Grin mare Bella Lucy who snared the 2100 metre Victorian Equine Group Trotters Mobile much to the delight of Echuca owner/breeders Norm and Joan Visca.

Driven by Chris Alford, Bella Lucy was sent forward from outside the front line to also race uncovered throughout, outstaying her rivals to score by a half neck from polemarker Milly An Eyre which trailed using the sprint lane in 204.1. Ima Calvert Rose (gate two) was third after leading.

Second victory

■ Cardigan co-trainers Anton Golino and Jack MacKinnon's fully French bred BrilliantissimeBeauty Life filly Hopeful Beauty has a liking for Charlton scored her second success there when taking the Fitzpatricks Transport 3Y0 Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres.

Raced by Yabby Dam Farm, Hopeful Beauty after being trapped wide from gate five went forward to cross the leader Whos Countin (gate three) who was happy to hand up and take a sit on the pace.

Driven to perfection, Hopeful Beauty kicked clear on turning to easily account for Jazspur by 10.8 metres which raced exposed after going forward from the extreme draw. Whos Countin held down third 3.6 metres away. The mile rate 2-02.3.

Pushed four back

■ At Bendigo on Tuesday, Kialla trainer Isabell Walsh produced a nice first starter by the name of Vintage Blu to capture the 250 metre Race Services 2Y0 Vicbred Pace in a 1-58.1 mile rate.

With Josh Aiken in the sulky, Vintage Blu, a Betterthancheddar-Roaring Franco gelding was given a cosy trip from gate five three back in the running line as Fightnfury led from the pole after crossing Matacey Mac which had crossed from gate four.

Pushed four wide on the final bend, Vintage Blu ran home stylishly to record a 2.5 metre margin over the pacemaker, with Le Belle Bijoux (one/three) third 2.4 metres back.

Gained last stride

■ Strathfieldsaye trainer Julie Douglas (wife of Glenn) combined with brother-in-law Daryl Douglas to land the Simonds Homes Bendigo Pace over 1650 metres with 4Y0 SportswriterPembrook Belle gelding Pembrook Charlie.

Starting from gate four, Pembrook Charlie was eased from gate four to possie four back in the moving line with Pearls For Cash outside him being driven with aggression to lead.

Trailing Azza ahead of him forward three wide in the approach to the home turn, Pembrook Charlie gained a last stride nose decision in a tricky finish over Azza which looked all over a winner on turning, with Bruised Ego (four back the markers) third 1.8 metres away after being extricated wide on straightening. The mile rate a slick 1-53.6.

■ Rochester part-owner/breeder/trainer Neville Pangrazio's more than handy Bettors Delight-Apennyspent 7Y0 gelding Return Soldier returned to his best form with an easy victory in the 2150 metre Alabar Bloodstock Pace.

Driven by very much in-form reinsman James Herbertson, Return Soldier led out from the pole before being eased to allow the hot favourite Boxofchocolates which had been trapped wide from gate six to assume control.

Easing away from the inside on the final bend, Return Soldier finished his race off well to gain the day by 8.3 metres from Ragnar along the sprint lane which followed him all the way. Laid Back Kenny was third 1.3 metres back after trailing the pair. The mile rate 1-56.3.

Double Day

■ Wednesday was double day with Hamilton racing in the afternoon and Echuca the evening.

At Hamilton popular Dundonnell part-owner/ trainer David Sweatman snared the Hamilton Laundry and Dry Cleaners Pace over 1660 metres with honest home bred SafariChabachon gelding Vetness.

With Michael Bellman in the sulky, Vetness raced uncovered from gate four, proving too tough at the finish for the pacemaker Spunky Thoughtz (gate two) in a 1-57 mile rate.

Juliustigres was third off a one/one trip from the extreme draw. The margins 2.1 metres by a half head.

■ Terang reinsman Jason Lee enjoyed a profitable afternoon after driving a treble - Filly Anahita (Somebeachsomewhere-Arterial Way) for mother Marg in the 1660 metre Back To Racing @ Hamilton 2Y0 Maiden Pace, Four year old Art Major-Shy Star gelding Major Maid for Narrawong trainer Jonathan O'Connor in the Kings Cars Hamilton Pace over 2160 metres and 4Y0 Ready Cash-Donegal Flat entire Celtic Cash for younger brother Paddy in the Matthews Petroleum Hamilton Trotters Handicap over 2160 metres.

A sometimes risky conveyance, Celtic Cash did everything right on this occasion after stepping safely but slowly from barrier four and after being allowed to find his feet, raced exposed for the final circuit to account for Icicle (20m) which followed him throughout by 15.3 metres in 2-03.8. Show Me The Moolah was third 3.1 metres back after leading from outside the front line.

■ First starter Classact, a colt by Wally Walton from Lotsaclass trained and driven by Terang based Matty Horsenell blew most quaddie punters out of the equation after taking the Hamilton Carpet Court 3Y0 Pace at odds of $30.90.

Taken back from outside the front line to spend most of the race three back along the markers as polemarker Rogervalerio Lombo led, Classact angled away from the inside approaching the home turn and ran home best to prevail by a half neck over the pacemaker in a slick rate of 1-55. Dowling which trailed the leader was third 11.8 metres away.

Driven by Ants, Prestige Stride led all of the way from gate three to score by 5.5 metres from Vanquish Stride (one/one - three wide home turn), with Stylish Joe third 6.7 metres back after trailing the winner.

The mile rate 1-59.6.

■ At Mildura, well known local owner/breeders Peter and Avis Agiro's ever reliable 4Y0 Western Terror-Caulonia Babe gelding Caulonia Terror chalked up his eighth success at start number 48 when winning the 2190 metre Tenderprint Australia Pace in a rate of 1-58.5. Trained at Merbein by Luke Watson, Caulonia Terror driven by wife Kathy settled at the rear of the field from gate three as Augustus Jack led from gate five leaving Pocket Thedeal exposed from gate four, with the hot favourite Bernie Winkle (gate six) one/one.
