The Darebin Council borrowings in the 202223 year are expected to blow out to $23 million, with a further $15 million borrowings sought for the 2023-24 period.

The Council says that it is “proposing to access debt funding to complete a range of major infrastructure projects including the construction of the Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre, the Reservoir Leisure Centre and Global Learning Hub”.

The borrowings continue in 2025-26 with $5 million, then a further $60 million over the 202627 and 2027-28 financial years.

Another $10 million will be borrowed in the 2030-31 year, according to the projections.

Currently, the Council has a 0 per cent rate of borrowings against rate revenue.

The total borrowings will be 49 per cent of the rate revenue in 2027-28, acccording to the Council’s own figures. ● See The Local Paper’s analysis of financial matters affecting Darebin Councillors on Page 4 of this issue.

● Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who served as consort to his wife Queen Elizabeth II for more than 60 years, has died at the age of 99.

Buckingham Palace released a statement on Friday night (Melbourne time), confirming the duke had died "peacefully".

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," the statement read.

"Further announcements will be made in due course.

"The royal family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

Flags at Buckingham Palace and on government buildings across the UK were lowered to half-mast.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Prince Philip "embodied a generation that we will never see again", and paid tribute to his service to Australia and the Commonwealth.

"Australians send our love and deepest condolences to her Majesty and all the Royal family," he said in a statement.

"The Commonwealth family joins together in sorrow and thanksgiving for the loss and life of Prince Philip.

"God bless from all here in Australia."

Mr Morrison confirmed flags around the country will be lowered "in honour of His Royal Highness".

The duke's body will lie at rest in Windsor Castle and the funeral will take place in St George's Palace in the castle's grounds.

Born on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921, Philip was the fifth child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice Battenberg — a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

He and the Queen married in 1947 and Philip went on to become the longest-serving consort of a monarch in the history of the British royal family.

The Diamond Creekl Netball Courts reconstruction (see Page 5) is funded with an allocation of almost $2 million from the Victorian Government through the Community Sports Infrastructure Program, Sport and Recreation Victoria and the Department of Jobs Precincts and Regions.

Nillumbik Shire Council has contributed almost $200,000. The Council has also recently allocated $300,000 from a Federal Government Pandemic Recovery grant to improve traffic flow and parking around Marngrook Oval which will also help ease the parking strain for netballers just across the pedestrian bridge. It’s Nature Play Week SPECIAL DAY AT DONNYBROOK ■ Mud pies and stick stews will be on the menu next week as children become bush explorers and celebrate Nature Play Week.

Nature Play Week encourages parents and kids to take a break from screens and spend time playing outside in nature and connecting with the local environment.

The City of Whittlesea will be hosting a free bush explorers event on Tuesday (Apr. 20) at gumnut park and playground, Donnybrook where children will have the opportunity to explore, create, imagine and discover nature.

The event, aimed at children aged 2-5, will be facilitated by Eco Explorers and Darebin Creek and Merri Creek management committees and will include nature inspired activities including a mud kitchen.

Toilets, food and coffee are available at the adjacent Shared Cup Café.

Three teens have been charged. fol lowing burglaries, thefts and the theft of a motor vehicle in Melbourne’s east on Tuesday morning last week (Apr. 6).

It is alleged the three attended at fitness centres in Doncaster and Kew East where they stole personal property belonging to the victims including a victim’s car keys, credit cards and vehicle. The trio then allegedly used the stolen credit card at a service station in Box Hill South to purchase goods before being arrested about 8.30am in High St, Kew. The trio, aged 17, 16 and 13-years-old, were subsequently charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft, theft of motor vehicle and assaulting police and resisting arrest. They were remanded in custody and were expected to appear before a children’s court.

There is now a formidable Council machine that seems to run the Councillors, not the other war around.

The 2041 Vision presented to last Thursday’s Council meeting is touchy, feely, but places little emphasis on delivering value to ratepayers.

“Darebin is equitable, vibrant, green and connected.

We respect First Nations peoples, our diverse communities and places. We are committed to a sustainable, climate safe future.”

The virtue-signalling is fine, but the Vision lacks real connection with ratepayers who simply want roads and rubbish to be managed well.

“The Darebin 2041 Com-

munity Vision has been developed through the Design Your Darebin 2041 engagement program, which included the establishment of a Deliberative Community Engagement Panel,” said the report to last Thursday’s meeting.

It talks about committees, more committees and even more committees. Ongoing talk-fests, “Community Engagement commenced in December 2020 with broad engagement and the results of this engagement informed the Deliberative Panel’s work to develop the Darebin 2041 Community Vision.

“The Deliberative Panel met virtually three times between February 28 and March 11 and completed further work through an on-line forum to finalise the Vision throughout March 2021.”

Those very words indicate that Darebin’s Vision 2041 was put together in a hurry to meet the State Government’s requirement to have a plan.

Darebin Council would be a lot more convincing if it knew what it was doing in 2021.

■ Bank managers and financial observers are always wary of organisation that are currently running at a loss, but promise surpluses in the years ahead.

Darebin Council last week presented a financial forecast that preicts a $1.138 million deficit for 2020-21. The coming 12 months show a predicted $4.283 million loss for the 2021-22.

Darebin Council predicts big surpluses in the years ahead: $7.056 million in 202223, $5.298 million in 2023-34, and $6.220 million in 2024-25. Wonder if the same CEO and Councillors will be still be on Council to be accountable for those pledges then?

Whittlesea Post Green Whittlesea

■ Planting 500,000 more trees in the next five years and increasing the percentage of “green” coverage in the City of Whittlesea by 2040 are some of the goals of Council’s new Greening Whittlesea – City Forest Strategy.

The strategy sets out plans for the protection, growth and management of the City’s trees and green cover as part of Council’s commitment to the Whittlesea 2040 community goals of sustainable environment, liveable neighbourhoods and connected communities.

Administrator Peita Duncan said the strategy was a first of the City of Whittlesea.

Ivanhoe proposal

■ Baynule Council is giving notice of its proposal to discontinue the section of road adjacent to 255-275 Upper Heidelberg Rd, Ivanhoe and retain the land for municipal purposes.

Responses from the public will be received until 5pm on May 11.

A plan identifying the road proposed to be discontinued can be viewed online, and aLSO during normal business hours at Banyule City Council located at 1 Flintoff St, Greensborough.

Submissions will be considered at the June 7 meeting of Council.

■ The Local Paper has received a letter of thanks after Darebin Councillors voted for safety measures outside Fairfield Primary School. The newspaper featured the plight of students, prior to a vote being taken at Darebin Council.

“Thanks for your support. Last week the council voted to support the school’s position re the FPS crossing,” said a letter from a parents’ representative. “School Council paused its meeting to listen to the debate and decision from Darebin Council. As the vote came in to approve the school’s request, there was a spontaneous round of applause .”

Surpluses pledged

OPINION ■ For a Council that often sends the perception to the public that it cannot control what is happening in the current week, it seems ambitious that Darebin City Councillors last week considered a vision plan for 2041.

The fact that the Council is considering a plan 20 years hence does not mean that they are necessarily good at it ... it just means that the State Government has passed a law saying that it is compulsory for municipalities to have a plan that looks ahead at least 10 years.

The Council is often hamfisted. Some Councillors are at war with each other. The Council has no relationship whatsoever, and seems to have no desire to communicate its activities to local people via this local newspaper.

Chief Executive Officer Sue Wilkinson must take major responsibility for these short comings.

That old political warhorse, Brian Sanaghan, who is conducting a one-man war against the Darebin Council, is certainly maintaining his rage, the mantra from the Gough Whitlam era of the 1970s. Mr Sanaghan has been evicted from Darebin Council meetings, and says he has spent time in the back of a Preston Police divvy van, without being charged, and he blames Darebin City executives rightly or wrongly - for organising that.

Now Mr Sanaghan is waging a war of emails at all hours of the day against Darebin City CEO Sue Wilkinson. The Local Paper doesn’t think that Darebin Council does well with public image issues, but Mr Sanaghan appears to be walking into a potential problem. His abusive emails to the CEO could potentially see an application for a Personal Safety Intervention Order, or defamation action.

We suspect Darebin Council has deeper pockets that Mr Sanaghan to fund legal actions. It might be time for to think of new angles, rather than cry ‘victim’ each Council meeting.

Works at Diamond Ck ■ Construction works will start soon on the $2.1 million surface upgrade to the Diamond Creek Netball Courts. A planning permit is no longer required for the project.

The netball court upgrade will see the existing courts demolished and reconstructed with new lighting, line marking and shelters to ensure they are compliant to Netball Victoria standards.

The Diamond Creek Netball Courts are home to more than 100 teams, boasting more than 1200 players, making it a significant local sports hub and attracting participants from the region and beyond.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Peter Perkins said he was pleased work could start on the muchneeded upgrade, but said Council had listened to the significant community feedback about fencing around the courts.

“Council did not intend to fully fence the courts, and I certainly did not support idea, but one of the draft drawings showing the courts fully fenced was submitted in error during the planning application process,” Cr Perkins said.

Wollert driver blows .144 PICKED UP AT THOMASTOWN ■ Greensborough Highway Patrol intercepted a vehicle in Thomastown following reports of an erratic driver travelling north near Wollert on Saturday morning.

Numerous calls to Triple 0 (000) were received after the Toyota Rav 4 was seen on the Hume Freeway about 4.20am.

Police located the vehicle in Thomastown and the 44-yearold woman from Casey in the ACT returned a positive evidentiary breath test of .144.

Her vehicle was impounded for 30 days and her licence was immediately suspended.

The woman is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving, drive in a manner dangerous and other traffic related offences.

■ All Victorian councils will be held to the approved 1.5 per cent rate cap for the year ahead with none applying for an above the cap variation for the 2021–22 financial year.

The Essential Services Commission has confirmed that the March 31 deadline passed with no applications to exceed the rate cap set by the State Government being received.

The Commission’s Executive Director of pricing, Marcus Crudden, says it is the second year in a row with no councils applying for a higher rate cap.

“This a good outcome for Victorian ratepayers with some councils also limiting rate increases for the current year to below approved levels, acknowledging the financial impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on households and businesses,” he said.

In 2020–21, 16 of the 79 councils kept rates steady at 2019–20 levels, and several others restricted increases to below the cap, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

■ The building might be under construction, but that isn’t stopping Wollert East Kindergarten from taking enrolments for its threeand four-year-old kindergarten program next year.

Wollert resident, Tejaswi Phani, who has recently registered her twins Ayan and Ryan for three-year-old kindergarten in 2022, said she’s excited to have a kinder so close to home.

“We moved from Ringwood to Wollert 2½ years ago to buy our first home, which has been good as the twins keep our hands full and there is lots of space,” Tejaswi said.

“We’re looking forward to them going to kinder – it’s so important for their educational and social development – but it’s great that the kinder is close too.”

The three-room kindergarten is part of the development of the Wollert East Community Centre.

City of Whittlesea Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said Council clearly understands the importance of access to infrastructure and services that make communities and neighbourhoods great places to call home.

● Lydia Wilson ■ The City of Whittlesea's Panel of Administrators, which acts as the ‘Council’, has provided a detailed report on its work to restore good governance and organisational stability.

It says it does so representing the best interests of the community in the first 12 months since being appointed by the Victorian Government.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said she was proud to serve the City of Whittlesea along with Administrators Peita Duncan, and acknowledged the work of Bruce Billson who resigned recently to take on a Federal Government appointment.

"The last 12 months has been a rewarding, busy and productive period with many achievements that go beyond good governance and organisational stability," Ms Wilson said.

"We are very proud to be The Council, leading the organisation alongside our CEO Craig Lloyd and the Executive Leadership Team - working in partnership for the best outcomes for our community going forward."

Over the past year, the Administrators have been united in its approach to good governance, effective decision making and representing the community.

Among the many activities are openings of community facilities, Council Meetings and Briefings, advisory committee representation, community engagement forums, media commitments, internal and external events, and meetings with members of parliament, residents and businesses.

"It is important that we have a strong governance role but also representative role on behalf of our community and we embrace the opportunity to participate in formal engagement activities as well as responding to enquiries that come to us directly from residents and business owners," Ms Wilson said.

With an eye to the future, an Administrator's Action Plan 2020-2024 has been developed, setting out a roadmap for delivering Council's priorities until the end of the Panel's term (2024).

"Our role, approach and priorities going forward have been included in our four-year Action Plan, which goes further than the recommendation made by the State Government-appointed Municipal Monitor to develop, implement and publicly report on our activities to embed good governance at Council while taking into account the reform opportunities contained within the Local Government Act 2020," Ms Wilson said.

"We have outlined our emphasis on good governance and effective decision-making together with very clear strategic directions as our roadmap going forward to 2024.

"Our Action Plan is aligned to the Council Plan and community vision - Whittlesea 2040 -priorities together with three additional priorities including good governance and effective implementation of Local Government Act 2020; COVID-19 response and recovery; and high performing organisation.

"Under each of those, the actions or focus areas we have identified include very clear deliverables and we note their status within the report as at April 2021 along with future actions," Ms Wilson said.

"For general transparency and accountability, we will report on the progress of our activities to the community every six months."

What’s On Refuge 2021 ■ Refuge 2021 by Arts House will run for four weeks from Wednesday, April 21, to Saturday, May 16, bringing together artists, emergency experts, scientists, deep thinkers and local communities to collaborate and prepare for multiple crises and climate emergency scenarios.

Each year, Refuge has partnered with Red Cross, Emergency Management Victoria and SES to consider new approaches and broad community perspectives on emergencies.

This year’s program features 13 projects, including an interactive game about disasters, an audio pilgrimage from Altona to Flagstaff Gardens, an essay and audio work into Melbourne’s waterways and the launch of Black Wattle, a publication about connections to place through lockdown.

Emily Sexton, Arts House Artistic Director, said that this year Refuge has shifted from the hypothetical into a reality.

“Our program is no longer something to imagine in the future. It’s here and we’re all dealing with it right now,” Sexton said.

“Throughout last year’s bushfires, the current pandemic and recent floods, it’s clear that government authorities, the emergency management sector and local community leaders must work closely together.

“Communities must be fully engaged and central to the planning and delivery of possible crisis solutions.”

Refuge 2021 will prepare for concurrent multi-crises. It will consider how artists and creativity can adapt current systems, structures and processes to cope with overlapping emergencies as well as advocate for a more equitable future.

City of Melbourne Creative Melbourne Portfolio Lead, Councillor, Cr Jamal Hakim, said the Refuge program has created a cultural change over the course of six years.

“Refuge brings artists and emergency service providers together to find creative ways to enhance emergency procedures through a suite of events and artist-led ideas,” Cr Hakim said.

“Our communities have been able to grow stronger and become more resilient by taking part in this collaborative process and planning for a crisis together.

“The program helps people to be more engaged, have greater awareness and be better prepared for potential crises in their local area.”

The emergency management partners actively participate in the planning and delivery of Refuge and have reviewed and adapted their approaches to crisis management situations and procedures as a result of the program.

Past Refuge climate crisis scenarios have included floods (2016), heatwaves (2017), pandemic (2018) and displacement (2019) as well as a digital talks series during the 2020 lockdown period.

Refuge runs from April 21-May 16 featuring 13 projects.

■ New independent Melbourne company Fourth Wall Theatre, formed just before the COVID lockdown in 2020, is presenting two hard-hitting plays exploring trauma at St Martin's Theatre, South Yarra, from May 6-15.

First, Slut, by Patricia Cornelius, written in 2007, highlights the way women are perceived and mistreated in society, particularly around the issues of early sexualisation, objectification, peer pressure and domestic violence.

The five-woman ensemble presenting this story inspired by true events includes Casey Bohan, Jen Bush, Malaynee Hayden, Julia Lambert with Reschelle O’Connor as Lolita.

Next, What is the Matter with Mary Jane? written by Wendy Harmer and Sancia Robinson is based on the true story of Sancia's journey through anorexia and bulimia.

Originally written as a one woman show, an ensemble of three women and one man give a voice to this mental illness that affects over one million Australians, and together they propel us through deception, misery, treatment and triumph. Peppered throughout with Harmer’s dry wit this is ultimately a story of hope and recovery.

Geraldine Hickey ■ The banal and ordinary is often what makes for the best comedy. Geraldine Hickey proved that with a set based around the embarrassment associated with birthday celebrations gone awry.

The key to unlocking this world is the audience itself – there is no end of human cringe moments and we can all recount our own.

Thus, the audience is on side.

But Hickey does more. Her set moves to the more intimate revelations associated with her engagement to her partner. And she readily admits to how the mind leads one to imagine the improbable.

For Hickey, an inflatable bouncy castle had entered her framework of thinking. We are the provocateurs of our own absurdity.

Ultimately, however, we are left in no doubt about how every day events are what make for comedy as she shows us video clips of those self same moments that provided the impetus for her set.

In some ways, this is like a magician revealing how the trick works. We are in awe – laughing in this instance – as we think something magical has been done. She has made us all collectively chuckle. But what Hickey has done is to mock the facade we maintain that prevents us from truly looking at our own ridiculousness.

The key, of course, is being able to laugh at one’s self. This is why Hickey is so funny.

The mirth she finds is in the everyday. Her joy is in being able to admit to the ridiculous and her own part in it.

We, the audience, are the beneficiaries as we are probably not as brave as Hickey.

Would we be as willing to laugh at ourselves as she does? There’s comedy aplenty if we can.

This Genuine Moment ■ Following a sold-out season from The Old 505 Theatre in Sydney, This Genuine Moment is coming to the La Mama Courthouse in Carlton from April 28-May 2.

Written by Jacob Parker and produced by Rock Bottom Productions, the story follows ‘R’ as he wakes up on Christmas Eve next to ‘L’ – a man whose name he does not know.

R has never done this before, and L has done this one too many times. As they piece together their apparent one night stand, R reveals his plan to ‘come out’ to his family at Christmas, and for the next hour, the conversation turns through topics of family, social media, sexuality, and a touch of chlamydia.

It all begins to unravel as both R and L confront the need for the truth, not just from each other, but also from themselves.

■ David Collins and Shane Dundas are the dynamic duo who make up The Umbilical Brothers and their latest production for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, The Distraction, has to be best in show – hands down.

This is comedy at its very best – creative, physical, witty and ridiculous. Literally kneeslapping, side-splitting hilarity.

While 2020 saw most of us glued to a screen, Collins and Dundas cleverly take our screen obsession to the next level with a live comedy show projected onto a large screen centre stage.

What is so fabulous about this is that by filming in front of two green screens, they are able to take us to places out of this world – literally.

They superimpose their live performance onto all sorts of backdrops, as well as mixing real footage with their onstage antics.

This marvellously inventive comedy conceives a new genre of sport– that might have been a little worrying if it wasn’t so funny, a B-grade horror cinema experience, reminiscent of the Attack of the 50 Foot Womanexcept it’s a baby, and hilarious space acrobatics.

Particularly clever was the camera technique superimposing the performers’ mouths - and voices - on audience members. Amazingly funny.

The Distraction was a highly technical production involving multiple cameras and special effects that would have required considerable rehearsing. That said, what is so endearing and what really colours their performance is that sense that not everything is exactly right, and those little (deliberate) mishaps just add to the humour.

Comedy genius is the best way to describe Collins and Dundas‘s The Distraction – and it might just be the best comedy show of 2021.

This Might Not Be Hell ■ Greg Larsen tries to thread the needle between a stand-up comedy routine and a play.

Performing all the roles himself, he depicts the absurdity of living on the dole and negotiating with the vagaries of Centrelink, job interviews for meaningless positions and even Lifeline. The naive simplicity of the scenarios he depicts is comic as we can all recount moments in our own lives that bordered on the ridiculous.

(I was once asked to prove to the human relations department in a public service position that my grandmother was dead having taken a day’s leave of absence to go to her funeral.)

these scenes of absurdity to point out that the events being described actually happened – the farting receptionist at a job agency highlighting that fart jokes are truly timeless. But it did happen and, as such, was appropriate fodder for Greg’s play.

The one difficulty is that Larsen tries to highlight the poignancy and depressive outcome of constant rejection and bureaucratic incompetence with a low key, contemplative conclusion that is more apt in a play than in a comedy routine. Finding the balance between these two genres then is what lies ahead should Larsen wish to develop this routine.

■ While Bec Charlwood’s vision of a stadium venue and a grandiose entrance, complete with dancers and special effects, to launch her “hotly-anticipated” stand up show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival might have fallen short, her sassy, bold, graphic and unapologetic comedy did not.

Dirty Girl is Charlwood’s debut stand-up show, first performed at the Perth Fringe Festival in January 2020.

She has had time to iron out any kinks and the pace and flow certainly reflect a command and confidence you might expect from a more seasoned performer.

Charlwood’s infectious high energy created an instant rapport with the audience.

As the title suggests, adult themes feature front and centre in the repertoire and Charlwood is quick to advise the audience the material is explicit in nature and includes plenty of references to her sexual exploits and her own private parts.

Drawing on life experiences – sibling rivalry and life in general at just 26, Charlwood is quite worldly and only too pleased to boast of her impressive resume of STDs. While she may have an unreasonable aversion to the name Steve and a belief that “middle-aged” (a term she uses loosely) women do not appreciate female comedians (hello?), most of her material is relatable.

Her observations on the life and times of musician Des’ree – who was surely before her times, is hilarious.

Charlwood is not for the faint-hearted, a graphic re-enactment of a gynaecological encounter to push the point, however if you happened to be in the back rows you were spared - as no line of sight.

An hour full of plenty of laughs, Bec Charlwood is one to look out for.

Local Theatre Bighouse Dreaming ■ Arts Centre Melbourne is bringing Declan Furber Gillick’s show Bighouse Dreaming to the Fairfax Studio from May 5-9 as a part of the Yirramboi Festival.

The award-winning work returns to Melbourne for the first time since Fringe Festival 2018 and explores themes of Australia’s judicial system and the challenges that face Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“For me it's an honour to be able to stage this show again. Not many works, particularly independent works, get more than one season. This is our fourth season in three states, so it's a really special thing to know how far this work has come,” says Bighouse Dreaming creator Declan Furber Gillick.

Bighouse Dreaming follows Chris ‘CWar”’Wallace, a 15 year old from a troubled regional town, who is balancing school, court family dramas and stints in The Bighouse to try and make it as a rapper.

Combining the rhythm and cultural force of hip hop with theatre, this performance holds an unflinching lens to the justice system, youth prisons and Australian masculinity – black and white.

“In 2016 I was working at an Aboriginal Legal Aid service in my home town Alice Springs when the ABC Four Corners investigation into Don Dale Youth Detention Centre (Australia's Shame) aired.

“I was working with young people and their families in the courts, as well as with adult offenders. I watched the episode and felt a combination of exasperation, anger, fatigue and a kind of gratitude that the episode had gone to air,” says Furber Gillick.

“But I also felt a numb and cynical acceptance of the status quo, which can happen when you live and work in a place of intense cyclical social conflict for a long time; it's difficult to feel hope or outrage towards things to which you've been desensitised. As I watched it and felt numb, I took note of the numbness and I resolved to investigate it.”

Bighouse Dreaming and Declan Furber Gillick received a Green Room Award for Best Ensemble and Best Writing and were nominated for Best Production. The work also was the recipient of three 2018 Melbourne Fringe Awards including Best Performance, Melbourne Festival Discovery Award and Best Emerging Indigenous Artist Award.

Writer-performer Declan Furber Gillick is an Arrernte artist with a background in performance poetry and narrative story-telling.

He worked as an Aboriginal Legal Support Assistant, inter-cultural Educator and Court Staffer before completing a Masters of Writing for Performance at Victorian College of the Arts 2017.

In 2018 his first play The Great Emu War received a staged reading at Melbourne Theatre Company, where he is currently a writer in residence. Bighouse Dreaming was developed with the support of Deadly Fringe, a collaborative initiative between ILBIJERRI and Melbourne Fringe.

Sporting a handlebar moustache and a rather large bullet wound, he proceeds to perform with extraordinary strength and agility on the rope.

An Oscar-winning performance despite his life-threatening injury. So begins a romp of a show.

In a typical Hollywood film noir

plot, a lounge singing, femme fatale puppet has hired a private investigation outfit to find the murderer of her lover.

Three hapless, hard-boiled detectives are on the case to find the killer.

A decidedly adult show, Dumtectives in Cirque Noir is filled with erotic innuendo, musical interludes, and farce.

Sex, slapstick and silliness abound with a healthy dose of

clever stunts and physical comedy. More screwball comedy than crime-solving, the Dumtectives spoof the classic 1940s noir genre performing some terrific acrobatics alongside snappy vaudeville clowning.

Amy Nightingale-Olsen shows her dexterity as she is flipped full circle over the audience. She also spins and tosses a giant spliff with her feet.

Leigh Rhodes performs a

There is also a marathon threeway juggling routine with balls, clubs and the odd knife. All the daredevil feats are accompanied by slick knockabout comedy and some very witty sight gags. The verdict? Dumtectives is a fun show with lots of laughs.

Local Theatre The Conjurer at the Card Table ■ Josh Staley, The Conjurer at the Card Table. It’s wonderful to see a bit of magic and conjuring as part of the Comedy Festival, and it is a good way to get young people along to live theatre.

There were quite a few on the night I went and, like the adults, they followed with keen interest Josh Staley’s steady banter as he deflected our eyes during some of the visual tricks.

This was fascinating skill, combining Grated comedy and magic.

Josh chose his 'volunteers' carefully, and we were afforded their highly entertaining and totally different responses to his work.

We had the amiable, calm, quiet believer; the louder person happy to be amused by devouring bananas as he searched for his $5 bill inside it.

Anther could well be described as a 'Doubting Thomas'. although she did seem definitely convinced by the end.

The venue was full house and certainly a very receptive full house, all appreciating the (possible mistakes) or was that part of the banter to keep us totally engrossed in the major sleights of hand.

Long live conjuring as a genuine human skill where the audience gasps and immediate applause erupts at incredulities that we just cannot work out.

There is quite a bit of talking, but most kids from eight up would enjoy this show and it’s a terrific opportunity to have a fun family night of live theatre for the holidays.

Black Santa ■ There was a hum on the streets of Melbourne on a balmy April Fool’s Night and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival offered up lashings of master tom foolery tucked into every available space in the city.

Melburnians were over the COVID hump, out to have fun and revelling in it.

J&E Events are presenting comedy festival-seasoned Emo The Comedian in Black Santa.

Emo’s life experience is wide-ranging, fleeing war-torn Ethiopia (his parents had already fled Sudan), walking until his family found shelter in a camp in Northern Kenya where the family of five were offered sponsorship as refugees in Australia. Emo found himself one of few black students in a predominantly white school in Perth.

But Emo is a builder who constructs comedy from life. His alluring comic demeanour exemplified by his infectious grin. He curiously wore a bejewelled Santa hat on the evening.

He entertained with stories of his travels.

His eyes are wide open to new experience as he humourously observes new destinations whether it be Montreal, Dandenong or St Kilda.

We laugh with Emo as he laughs himself.

Seen through the eyes of a refugee whose moments of self-proclaimed naivety have let him down but, we suspect, his humour and study of human nature have won out. He delivered an especially funny take on love-making in the dark.

News $250,079 for Good Friday Appeal Neville, 93, is a Masonic marathon man

● Neville Emerson ■ There are many young men, aged 18 and over, who are members of Freemasons Victoria.

At 93 years young, Lower Plenty real estate agent Neville Emerson is a keen and energetic Freemason.

Not many years ago, Neville was lining up for 42km marathons to maintain physical fitness and keep his weight down.

But he says that it is with monthly Freemasons meetings that he keeps mentally fit.

Neville says that he best enjoys mentoring younger fellows to become better men, better husbands and better fathers.

Neville first joined St Phillip Lodge at age 21. His father, at first, was against the idea, but then joined up too.

Neville and his wife, Jean, have raised four daughters, and he remains active in community service activities.

Some of his other community work has included Rotary, the Salvation Army and Eltham College.

I live in Greensborough. I would like to tell you about a men’s fraternity to which I belong. The group is called the Freemasons.

There are about six million Freemasons worldwide. There are 7600 active members in Victoria. These are good men who want to become better men.

Our members meet each month.

We learn life lessons (degrees), share a meal and a drink with each other, we have social functions that include our family members, and we enjoy doing charity work. We can also visit our mates at other Lodges. It’s fun.

Together in Victoria, we donate about $2 million-$3 million to worthy causes through our Freemasons Foundation. And we roll up our sleeves to volunteer for practical work such as Bushfire and Disaster relief.

Our members are keen on making the world a better place.

It is a firm rule that we never discuss religion or politics. Each Freemason has their own belief in a Supreme Being, but that is their own personal business.

We look out for opportunities to support each other. We go out of our way to avoid internal club quarrels.

At a time when the conduct of some males is justifiably under question, I thought you might like to know there is a fraternity of men who prize best behaviours, good manners and kindness.

This means becoming better citizens, better husbands and better fathers. For us older blokes, that means being better grandfathers.

Freemasons Victoria is an organisation of good men, supporting each other, their families and the community.

Good men can join from the age of 18. We especially enjoy mentoring newer members to help them in their working life. But it is not about professional networking. We frown on members using their membership for business gain.

Here in the northern suburbs, we have Masonic Centres at places including Brunswick, City, Darebin (Ivanhoe), Diamond Creek, Kyneton, Preston, Romsey, Sunbury and Whittlesea. We have 240 Lodges across Victoria.

Exciting plans ■ Docklands Stadium, also known by naming rights sponsorship as Marvel Stadium, is a multi-purpose sports and entertainment stadium in the Docklands area of Melbourne.

Construction started in October 1997, and was completed in 2000 at a cost of A$460 million.

There are now exciting new plans that have been revealed for a $225 million redevelopment of the l Stadium, to revitalise the 20-year-old precinct and make it more fan-friendly.

Much of the work centres on the eastern and southern sides of the stadium's exterior, with the venue to opened up to Melbourne's CBD. While the plans don't reveal any change the stadium's seating bowl, they do reveal new and upgraded internal spaces, bars and restaurants, with some internal walls to be removed to open them up to the field of play.

A new 'town square' will be developed as an extension to the stadium near the Bourke St footbridge combining indoor and outdoor areas, capable of hosting community markets and public events. A 'city edge' extension on the eastern side will be built with revamped public and function areas boasting city views.

Two new larger video screens are to be hanged from the roof at either end of the stadium, while upgrade lighting and technology will be implemented throughout the stadium to improve the game-day experience.

Home clubs will be able to fully integrate their branding when hosting events at Marvel Stadium, through external and internal LED lighting and LED video screens throughout the venue.

Player facilities will also be upgraded, including male and female change rooms, while bike parking will be created for fans to promote sustainable transport.

It all sounds like ‘L.A. Live Downtown’ around the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. The area is now buzzing with restaurants, merchandise shops and sporting activities. Melburnians will flock to this new innovation and it will refocus the center of the city. .

Stimulus cheques ■ As Americans start to receive the latest round of stimulus checks, a new analysis reveals that about $4.38 billion will also go to illegal immigrants.

The Centre for Immigration Studies estimates that 2.65 million illegal immigrants have Social Security numbers that allow them to receive stimulus checks.

This group of illegal immigrants can be described as "aliens temporarily present without status," according to Steven Camarota, director of research for the centre for Immigration Studies.

"These individuals are in the country illegally and could be required to leave. Yet, under the current system, they are still given work authorisation and Social Security numbers," he said.

They include Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and Temporary Protected Status recipients.

In addition, US Citizenship and Immigration Services issued 882,000 work authorisations and Social Security numbers to other illegal immigrants in fiscal year 2020, the analysis states. These include asylum applicants, as well as those applying for adjustment of status and suspension of deportation, among other categories.

■ Nearly half of Americans feel that no matter how often they wash their hands, it's never enough during COVID-19, according to a new survey.

Despite the results however, researchers find constantly stressing over safety is getting old fast as the world enters year two of the pandemic.

The poll asked 2000 Americans to reflect on the past 12 months to analyse their hygiene habits.

Even though 90 percent of respondents say they are aware of the CDC's guidance on washing hands for 20 seconds, 41 percent admit it's starting to get tiresome.

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of American Water, the survey analysed how respondents are practicing hygiene as quarantines, lockdowns, and social distancing drags in to 2021.

It may come as no surprise that the pandemic is a frustrating subject for three-quarters of respondents.

More specifically, 65 percent have had it with people not taking the crisis seriously enough so it can end. Forty-two percent of the survey now describe themselves as a germaphobe because of the pandemic.

Of these respondents, 79 per cent agree that this change isn't necessarily a bad thing. The top habits respondents are doing to stay safe include carrying hand sanitiser at all times, immediately washing their hands for a full 20 seconds after being outside, and avoiding contact with public surfaces at all costs.

With frequent hand washing being a key part of fighting COVID-19, the survey also looked at how frequently people are doing this.

Researchers discovered the average American washes their hands nine times a day. Nearly one in five (18 per cent ) wash upwards of 15 times a day.

Racist stereotype ■ Disney+ has stripped its children's movie selection of classic movies like Dumbo, The Aristocats, and Peter Pan because of their "racist" stereotypes.

Settings on the streaming site's app will deter children from watching the once-loved, now controversial, titles.

On the "Stories Matter" section of their website, Disney explained why each iconic movie was being pulled.

For Dumbo they explained that "the crows and musical number pay homage to racist minstrel shows, where white performers with blackened faces and tattered clothing imitated and ridiculed enslaved Africans on Southern plantations.

"The leader of the group in Dumbo is Jim Crow, which shares the name of laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States."

And for Peter Pan they stated that "the film portrays Native people in a stereotypical manner that reflects neither the diversity of Native peoples nor their authentic cultural traditions.

"It shows them speaking in an unintelligible language and repeatedly refers to them as 'redskins,' an offensive term.

Garbo check criminals ■ Tinder, along with its parent company Match Group, is working with a non-profit called Garbo to help customers find out if their potential dating partner has a criminal record.

Most people know very little about the person they have just met online. Garbo allows people to find out whether someone they are interacting with has a criminal record or other court actions, such as a restraining order.

■ If you've struggled to cope during the past year, here's some hard proof that you're far from alone.

The American Psychological Association released a new survey a year to the day since the World Health Organisation declared a global pandemic that illustrates the enormous stress everyone has been under, and its impact on our health.

Some 61 per cent of respondents to an online poll said their weight had fluctuated over the past year, with 42 per cent saying they'd gained more weight than they wanted to, almost 30 pounds on average.

Ten per cent of respondents reported gains of more than 50 pounds. Nearly 25 percent of survey-takers said they'd been drinking more than usual during the pandemic a figure that more than doubled to 52 percent among parents with children in early elementary school.

"When stressors go up, there are changes in behaviour that affect our bodies," said Scott Bea, a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic. "I think those effects are going to last for some time."

Spreading COVID-19 ■ Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are repeatedly releasing detainees who have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, in one example, an asylum-seeker from Cameroon was driven from immigration detention to a bus station in the California border city of Calexico and, when volunteers greeted him and offered help, he told them he had been diagnosed with COVID-19.

The next day, a Cuban man was dropped off who had also just tested positive. Immigration advocates told the Post that it's right that detainees with the virus should be released to get medical care, but said it's reckless to release them into the public without providing help.

"It's reprehensible," Jules Kramer, chief of operations at the Minority Humanitarian Foundation, told the Post. "It's a threat to public safety. It's a threat to our asylum-seekers. It's a threat to the people on the ground helping." In a statement, ICE spokeswoman Paige Hughes said: "US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is firmly committed to the health and welfare of all those in its custody... In these particular instances, ICE had no legal authority to continue detention for the individuals referenced."

Magazine ■ When television first began in Melbourne in 1956 I remember going into a hall in Coburg where the local electrical retailer had set up TV sets so that the public could see television for themselves - and hopefully buy one.

We sat on the floor in awe watching I Love Lucy and then suddenly there was one of my favourite film actors Robert Young in a show called Father Knows Best. I was hooked on this new invention.

Robert George Young was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1907. His family moved to Los Angeles where he graduated from college. Whilst working as a bank clerk he joined the Pasadena Players and got the acting bug - it was there that he met his future wife Betty Henderson.

Robert worked as an extra in silent films and appeared in some of the Keystone Cops features. He was performing in a stage play when he was spotted by an MGM talent scout.

His first supporting role in 1931 was in the Charlie Chan film, The Black Camel, where he was cast opposite Warner Oland and Bella Lugosi. He claimed that it was his next film, The Sin of Madelon Claudet, that gained him notice as producer Irving Thalberg insisted on reshooting scenes and Robert's on- screen time was increased. He was making up to eight "B' grade films a year at MGM. In 1933 he married Betty.

Robert returned to MGM and was becoming very popular with film audiences.

He was loaned to Twentieth Century Fox where he starred opposite Shirley Temple in Stowaway. His films at MGM included Three Comrades, Honolulu, Northwest Passage, Lady Be Good and The Canterville Ghost. Robert Young left MGM in 1944 and worked as a free lance actor for the rest of his life.

When his film career waned in the late 1940s Robert Young turned to radio starring in Father Knows Best. The show transferred to television in 1954 and Robert was cast as Jim Anderson, the kind father who sorted out the family problems.

The series ran from 1954 till 1960. Father Knows Best also starred Jane Wyatt, Elinor Donahue, Billy Gray and Lauren Chapin. I have interviewed Billy Gray and Lauren Chapin who both spoke highly of Robert.

During the filming Lauren Chapin was often invited to spend the week ends with Robert, Betty and their four children. In 1966 he suffered a nervous breakdown and it took almost four years to recover.

Robert Young returned with a new television series Marcus Welby MD which was very successful and ran from 1969 till 1976. Robert Young was in Melbourne for the Logies in 1970.

He suffered from alcoholism and depression which led to a suicide attempt. Robert overcame these problems and lectured on his experiences to encourage others to seek help.

Betty passed away in 1994 and Robert died in 1998 of respiratory failure at his home in California at the age of 91.

He played the handsome, carefree man onscreen and I always enjoy watching his work in those old films.

‘Cry of the Land’ at Heide Museum

Cry of the Land: Inspired by Albert Tucker's active support of environmental conservation, Cry of the Land charts diverse and often moving interpretations of the Australian landscape, compelling us to confront the devastating longterm effects of drought, fire, flood and human destruction.

This exhibition includes works by

Groovyman ■ All the way from the writing table of Ed Dolista, Comic Genius Productions brings Groovyman (title role played by the purple spandex wearing Ian NashGilchrist) to the Butterfly Club.

With up to seven performers on this small stage at anytime this show is larger than life.

Elaborate super hero costumes, loud voices, over the top, slapstick humour, gigantic hairpieces a perfect recipe for a corny, funny show for all ages.

There was laughter from all in the audience, ‘though not necessarily at the same time.

With much of the humour aimed at 1970 and ‘80s music, TV references and personalities, some of the younger audience members were probably a bit miffed, yet the energy and pace of the show along with its simple premise of superheroes catching bad guy appealed to all.

The cast was well rehearsed in comic timing, fancy costume and scene changes as well as manouevering around the stage.

This is a professional, ensemble with a number of stand out one liners, jokes and performances along with clever sight gags.

I particularly loved the singing voice of Jen Stirk, yet did wonder if The Boy Funkster (Nick Addison) deliberately sang in the wrong key (in tune ‘though).

Groovyman is a full production complete with props, credits, musical numbers and a narrative. Not easy to pull off with such limited time and space. A fun night at the Comedy Festival.

● Brooke Shields ■ Brooke Shields was involved in a horrendous accident and suffered a snapped right femur when she fell from equipment whilst exercising at her gym. Brooke had metal rods inserted in her leg and has had to learn to walk again. Now 55 years of age, Brooke is on the road to recovery but the whole accident has been a painful experience involving two weeks in hospital.

Come to MAMA Brook Gurru Andrew DIWIL: The Waradjuri word diwil translates to 'collection and reflects the artist's relationships with objects, history and Country. The exhibition ,arks the premiere of Garrungajuungaay, a major new installation commissioned by MAMA. Garrungajuungaay is a wall drawing and neon installation that full surrounds audiences in the museum's collection galleries.

The work is part of a continually evolving approach to wall drawing and museum intervention, and prominently includes language with the words Ngajuu - I See making the gallery a place of inspection, reckoning and exchanger.

Within the space created by Garrungajuungaay, key words from the last decade amplify the artist's approach to harnessing alternative narratives to explore the legacies of colonisation and modernism.

Season closes Sunday September 5.

Fires on ABC ■ Filming is underway in Melbourne and regional Victoria on the six-part anthology drama Fires. The series is inspired by accounts from people who survived the catastrophic fire season of late 2019 and early 2020.

AFL players cash in ■ ‘tis the season for AFL players to line their pockets with some extra cash for appearing in sponsors ‘TV ads ,flogging everything from cable TV to fast food.

Most of appearances involve a few hours work for six figure sums minus what their managers pocket. Super stars of the game like Dusty Martin are raking in extra brass - even AFL boss Gillon McLachlan is in on the deal, appearing in a spot for McDonalds.

Remember when?

■ Remember Sara Marie when she first appeared on the initial episodes of Big Brother. Sara was an overnight success with her famous Bum Dance, wearing Bunny ears, PJs, she even wrote a book and appeared on most of the tv reality shows airing at the time.

Then she faded from public exposure. Now aged 42 , Sara made a reappearance on The Project explaining she is studying to become a teachers’ aide, and living in Perth.

Some get the chop ■ The program chiefs at Seven have agreed to give Holey, Moley one last chance and will soon commence production on series two.

Sonia Kruger, Matt Shirvington and Rob Riggle have had contracts renewed as co-presenters. Ratings in series 1 got off to a promising start but faded to below expectations as the episodes wore on.

Not good news for The Ultimate Tag as Seven has decided to cut their losses and program will not be seen again.

The real Paris ■ A lot of folk around the world formed the opinion that Paris Hilton was a spoilt, bimbo brat. Well, we haven’t heard from Paris for awhile as she has been making a biopic titled This is Paris, available right now on Youtube.

The biopic shows a grown -up side of the Paris, as she talks about how she was abused as a teen and shunted around the world attending functions.

Not that she needs it, but her current income stream comes from being a DJ at dance parties.

Good, solid well executed drama that unfolds like a slow burning fuse across a vast 1960s rural canvas that breaths like a western, a modern reworking of a classic genre that never feels superfluous, and once its grip takes hold, it doesn't let go, playing out in its own style that never lets the audience off the hook and without falling into too much cliché, and overall is as effecting as it is entertaining, finally balancing the knife-edged drama and violence with the power and grip of unchained empathy.

Based on the novel by Larry Watson and helmed by writer-director Thomas Bezucha, veteran stars Diane Lane and Kevin Costner dominate every moment of their screen time, bringing with them a wealth of baggage of screen history that sets them out as much as the landscapes throughout, matched with tremendous punch by Oscar nominated Leslie Manville (The Phantom Thread) in an Oscar worthy performance as the female matriarch of the brutal backwoods family, all culminating in an unforgettable face-off of damning retribution reflective of Sam Peckinpah's searing 1971 thriller "Straw Dogs."

Beautifully filmed and paced with superb 1960s period detail and set design, this is a rare treat in cinema today, the antithesis of the myriad of superhero movies on offer, yet driven with overwhelming effect by two aging baby boomer superheroes of another nature, both with true grit where the wear, tear and lines of age easily replace any words, a rarity also in that you could turn off the sound and still follow every moment with equal understanding and overall results, and when all is said and done, this is an intensely moving, poignant, thought provoking and ultimately unforgettable emotional thrill ride!

Rourke’s Reviews The Platform ■ (R). 94 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Highly relevant and depressing in equal measure, this unexpectedly visceral thriller provides much food for thought, as it largely presents humanity at its absolute worst, while that small sliver of hope has to fight long and hard to make an impact.

Set in the near future, the story takes place in a uniquely designed underground prison, where the cells are placed one on top of the other, descending hundreds of floors.

Each cell contains two prisoners, and in the centre is a rectangleshaped hole, where a platform is lowered from floor to floor.

On this platform is a bounty of food of the highest quality, cooked to perfection by a carefully chosen group of chefs.

Those who run the prison treat the whole set-up as an elaborate experiment; there is enough food for everyone, but only if each level eats what they need.

Of course, this isn't the case, as the upper floors stuff their faces, leaving nothing for those relegated to the lower levels.

The latest addition is Goreng (Ivan Massague), a bookworm who is about to witness the awful savagery that man is capable of.

Though it could never be described as subtle, debutant director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia delivers his message powerfully and confidently (and uses the limited budget to striking effect), and its examination of class structure and dog-eatdog mentality are unnervingly prescient (the latter made all-the-more chilling when we think back to news footage of people ruthlessly hoarding during the early weeks of the COVID-19 crisis).

Time To Hunt ■ (MA). 134 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Director Yoon Sung-hyun finally follows up his impressive 2011 debut feature, Bleak Night, with Time To Hunt, a dark, dour action/thriller that effectively shows characters trying to survive in a collapsing society, while also delivering some superb set-pieces.

Set in the not-too-distant future, we are introduced to Ki-hoon (Choi Woo-shik, who played the son in the Oscar-winning Parasite) and Jang-ho (Ahn Jae-hong), childhood friends who are barely keeping their heads above water in a polluted country where the gap between rich and poor has never been wider.

South Korea has been suffering a major financial crisis, caus-

ing their currency to crash, thousands of businesses to fold, and leaving millions of people unemployed, with a growing number forced into homelessness. The two greet another longtime friend, JunSeok (Lee Je-hoon), who is being released after serving three years in prison for a robbery gone wrong, and during celebratory drinks, accompanied by Sang-soo (Park Jeong-min), he suggests they steal from the gambling house where Sang-soo works. Hesitant at first, the other three are eventually convinced by Jun-seok's scheme, but of course things don't go completely to plan. Using the age-old 'heistgone-wrong' premise, writer/director Yoon adds a number of layers to the scenario, incorporating various political and social commentaries to the crime mix, all seen through the eyes of these four young men who have experienced this corrupt, violent world for most of their lives.

Some elements became relevant after COVID-19 crippled global and local economies, along with the growing prevalence of government surveillance and access to private data (Taiwan doesn't seem like a random choice of destination either). It's also fascinating that this brutal environment is run wholly by men, with women almost completely absent from the landscape (apart from Ki-hoon's mother, women are only seen in the background as either essential workers or gambling molls). The long break certainly hasn't dimmed Yoon's ambitions, and even though the world he creates could have been a whole movie in itself, his focus is on the four protagonists, and this attention to the human factor is another aspect of why this is a cut above the usual slick concoction of big-screen mayhem. The entire cast are terrific, and all make the most of the time devoted to their characters' development, but stealing the film Park Hae-soo, who is simply mesmerising as Han, the killer hired to take out the amateur robbers. Yoon doesn't skimp when it does come to action and suspense, and his execution of these sequences is first-rate, with highlights including confrontations in a hospital and underground garage.

Though some have compared his meticulous stylings here to Michael Mann (Heat), I would make comparisons to Kim Jeewoon (A Bittersweet Life). Adding immeasurably to the atmosphere is the cinematography by Lim Wongeun, and it is incredible that this is his first film. Though the plotting does require the audience to occasionally suspend disbelief, Time To Hunt is a heady mix of social commentary and tense, violent action, and after that long hiatus, Yoon cements his standing as a genuinely talented film-maker.

■ Patrick Collins may not be a mime yet he has mastered this skill brilliantly, displaying this in his current show Patrick Collins – I’m Not a Mime.

Collins is a joy to watch. He cleverly uses the small stage in The Butterfly Club to create various scenes and sketches with the only props an occasional microphone and a ball.

Collins is clever, unique and generous sharing his talent and stories.

With the use of perfectly timed sound effects, pre-recordings and various characters, this does not feel like a one man show. There is a variety of style from sketches to dialogue to mime, all letting us into the secret world of Patrick Collins's view of society and self.

He uses the space well, acknowledging the audience when appropriate and changing style throughout to keep the interest and pace for the full 50 minutes.

Whilst I am not the target audience for Collins’s show, I recommend to anyone if you get the chance now or in the future, see this award winning artist.

Whilst a laugh is guaranteed you might also shed a tear and definitely learn a thing or two.

Coral Browne: This F***ing Lady ■ The parquetry floor of the Brunswick Ballroom with its cabaret tables set before a simple stage of theatrical memorabilia provided but a hint of what was to come.

This ambience of a past generation came to life with the exuberance that was Coral Browne – or was it Amanda Muggleton’s portrayal. It didn’t matter.

We were immediately transported back into an era when celebrity had substance and the stars of the stage and screen were larger than life.

Maureen Sherlock’s summation of Browne’s life is a biography of a woman who embodied the stage living life to the full.

Muggleton delights in the role indulging in the theatricality that was Browne’s life; the dalliances, the achievements, the highlights and the losses.

Yet, through it all, Browne’s passion for life comes through. It’s as if one cannot separate Browne and the stage or Muggleton and Browne.

A dais before an audience seems to be the perfect forum for telling the life of our very own Footscray girl who conquered the world in much the same way as Melba did in the preceding century.

Battle royal in the Queen Elizabeth

■ One of the best fields to ever run in the timehonoured Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Sydney will race for the rich prize this Saturday (Apr. 17)..

The former Irish international Addeybb, who was narrowly beaten by top mare Verry Elleegant in the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill back on March 27 is the favourite just ahead of the mare.

He has great international form to his credit, having won the Champion Stakes over 2004 metres at Ascot, back in October.

On his last visit to Australia he won two Group Ones, including last year's Queen Elizabeth Stakes in good style.

He is trained by W. Haggas at Newmarket in Great Britain, and is all class although he is rising eight years of age.

However, he is the one to beat in the class field. Just behind in the Bookies market is Verry Elleegant, who is taking all before her.

Prepared by Australia's top trainer, Chris Waller, Verry Elleegant has won 13 of her 28 starts, all in top company, with seven placings.

She narrowly beat Addeybb last start, and it should be a great tussle again.

Verry Elleegant is a winner of over $7 million in stakemoney, after being transferred from Darren Weir's stables.

In winning the Ranvet at her last outing she won over the same distance of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and handles all types of going.

It will a crackerjack tussle, if it was anything like the Ranvet when they met last start.

Another with all class on his side is the American bred galloper out of an Irish mare, Mugatoo.

He won the coveted All Star Mile at Moonee Valley over 1600 metres in great style on a rain effected track.

When the rain came at the Valley that day, a number of punters shied off the favourite, Probaeel, because of her lack of wet weather form, but Mugatoo, after being laid at 10-1 came right in.

His trainer, Kris Lees, who trains out of Newcastle in New South Wales, was over the moon when the rain came, and after a brilliant ride by leading jockey, Hugh Bowman, who knows the Valley so well, after his four great wins on the wonder mare, Winx ,in the Cox Plate.

If there is any rain in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes you have to have a saver on Mugatoo, he gets the giggles when it rains. If it rains especially heavy, get on each way.

Classy mare, Colette, ran a good fifth behind Addeybb and Verry Elleegant in the Ranvet over this distance.

She is the hands of leading trainer, James Cummings, and has good form to her credit.

She is an Oaks winner, and won the Apollo Stakes over 1400 metres back on February 21, beating Kolding by two lengths, first up after a break.

She then was beaten narrowly by Verry Elleegant in the Chipping Norton Stakes, a Group One event.

Then with the help of more racing she extended out to 2000 metres of the Sky- High Group 3 event, running fourth behind Toffee Tongue.

The Irish import was just too good for them in the Tancred over 2400 metres, at Rosehill, beating the good mare, She's Ideel, easily with the former Victorian Oaks winner, Miami Bound, showing a glimpse of her best form finishing a good third after coming from a long way back.

It was a promising change of luck for Flemington trainer Danny O'Brien who has put his trust in the mare.

The top mare, Probabeel, has to be included in the chances, but only on one condition, that the track is not wet.

Although she is out of a New Zealand bred mare, namely Far Fetched, she gets the flu when it rains.

Take for instance her run in the All-Star Mile at Moonee Valley on March 13, when she failed to run on, with the track on the day against her.

Even before the race her trainer was thinking of scratching her, because she can't handle the wet.

It's a similar scenario to the former top galloper Manikato.

I always felt that Manikato couldn't handle the wet, and his rider Gary Willetts backed this up, when I interviewed him on the National Jockey's Trust day at the Woodlands Golf Course on March 22.

Gary said his reason why was, that he was a big strider, and just couldn't handle the tricky conditions.

It looks the same for Probabeel, because when conditions suit, she is top notch and a winner of nearly $3 million in stakemoney.

Hence a good track, and she is right in this.

On the next line is the evergreen competitor Avilius, in the care of James Cummings, who put in a good run in the Group One George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill back on March 27.

He stuck it out finishing on behind Think It Over and Dream Force over 1500 metres.

He is good on his day, but he hasn't won in his last 15 starts.

Of the others, if he goes around is Mo'unga, a three-year-old, with a load of talent, a recent winner of the Rosehill Guineas.

ANZAC Day at Deni

■ I am looking forward to a big day at the Diggers Cup meeting at Deniliquin on ANZAc Day, where the Club puts together a great day of racing and a number of feature events for racegoers and their families.

I go up with a good friend of mine racecaller, Nigel Killip, and his wife Caroline, and their son, Jake.

My job is to run the PA, interviewing all the sponsors on the day along with the winning jockeys, and conducting the Last Post ceremony.

It is always a great day, and I will follow the day up again in my column prior to the big day.

The two heats of the Tasco Petroleum Mildura Pacing Cup over 2600 metres saw victory go the way of 4Y0 Art Major-Hi Life Franco entire Silent Major for Horsham trainerdriver Aaron Dunn and 4Y0 Mach Three-Bettor Give It gelding Mach Dan for the all conquering Cardigan stable of Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin with Greg Sugars in the sulky.

A much travelled former Kiwi which raced in Victoria before crossing the Nullarbor to race with success in WA, Silent Major (gate 4) settled mid-field in the moving lane with outsider Assassinator (gate 3) leading.

With action aplenty from the outset, Like A Wildfire was sent forward mid-race to park outside the leader before the bell. The runs started coming shortly after as Silent Major commenced a forward move three wide being trailed by local hope Egodan from last. Racing into the final bend, both Like A Wildfire and Silent Major drew away to fight out the finish, with Silent Major gaining the nod by a neck in a mile rate of 1-58. Egodan kept on coming for third 8.2 metres back.

■ Quality pacer Mach Dan starting from gate two on the second line possied three back in the moving line after Sonny Weaver flew away from gate two to lead with Bulletproof Boy going forward from outside the front line to race in the open.

Once the speed eased, Sugars was off and running with Mach Dan to cross Sonny Weaver with ease two laps out and from there on was always going to win. Stablemate Somewhere Secret went forward at the bell to assume his usual death-seat role with the three having the race to themselves. Coasting to the wire untouched, Mach Dan scored by 6.1 metres from Sonny Weaver and Somewhere Secret who was 4.1 metres back. The mile rate 1-59.

■ Two heats of the Tenderprint Australia Cup over 2190 metres supplemented a huge night the first heat going to another of the Stewart/ Tonkin camp in 4Y0 Mach Three-Jennas Highview gelding Carlas Mach (Kate Gath) who obliterated his rivals after racing outside and destroying the pacemaker Cee Cee In America.

Dashing away before the home turn, Carlas Mach greeted the judge by 12 metres from Young Rooster (three back the markers) and South Australian Waitpinga Lad which trailed the weakening leader finishing 18.5 metres back.

■ Heat two saw another from stable Krafty Bart (Kate Gath) do similar. A 5Y0 Betterthancheddar-Incendio entire, Krafty Bart relished the 'death-seating' role from gate two, winning by 8.8 metres in 1-58 from Dotison (four back the markers) after racing wide in the early stages, with South Australian Budding Caesar third 4 metres away after trailing the poleline leader Smooth Deal who was expected to run a big race first up from New Zealand, but didn't flatter finishing 16.3 metres from the winner.

The trotters took centre stage at Mildura with the annual one off trotting night highlighting the program - the $14,000 Niota Bloodstock 2021 Trotters Cup going to country cups king Well Deserved in a thrilling last stride victory, while ex-Victorian now SA based Meziah snared The $7,000 Victorian Square Trotters Association 2021 Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres.

■ Six year old Majestic Son-Focus On Me gelding Well Deserved already a winner of the Wangaratta, Boort, Ararat and Terang Trotters Cups made it number five with a head margin at Mildura.

Hamilton dash ■ Hamilton raced on Monday and five year old Rock N Roll Heaven-Nightoffire gelding Mynameisjeff bred and raced by David Lewis,Terry Lewis and Wayne Krause was victorious in the long time featured Alexandra House / APG - APTS Border Cup Final over 1660 metres.

Trained by David in Hamilton, Mynameisjeff with Mattie Craven in the sulky settled well back in the field from gate two on the second line as Comin In Hot led from the pole.

Driven by James Herbertson, Its Ebonynivory led from the pole but couldn't match the speed shown by Batman Barry which showed exceptional speed from gate six to cross.

Enjoying the run of the race, Herbie eased Its Ebonynivory away from the markers on straightening and ran home best to score an impressive 3.3 metre victory over the pacemaker in a 155.4 mile rate. River Patrol which followed the pair from inside the second line was third 4.4 metres back.
