CEO quits for climate ... and $550,000

● John Baker ■ Mornington Peninsula Shire CEO John Baker is expected to be on a package of $550,000 a year in his new job at Sunshine Coast Council in Queensland. Mr Baker, who was on a $425,000 package at Mornington Peninsula, was only two years into his renewed contract. He has signed for five years in the new Sunshine Coast job. Mr Baker told staff and councillors his “greatest accomplishment” had been the shift in the organisation’s culture. “Watching us grow from a reactive to a proactive, success-driven workplace has been one of the proudest achievements of my career,” Mr Baker said. “Knowing that 81 per cent of our people now love coming to work each day fills me with joy and hope for the Shire’s future.” Sunshine Coast mayor Rosanna Natoli was “delighted” the council had been able to secure someone of Mr Baker’s calibre to lead its organisation. “He demonstrates values-based, collaborative leadership, he values strong community engagement and prioritises excellent service delivery,” she said. On accepting his Mornington Peninsula role, Baker was fresh from the United Kingdom, where he’d been a partner with KPMG and later Ernst & Young. “At E&Y, I led the local government practice across the entire UK,” he told CEO Magazine. “I oversaw some of the largest transformation projects, such as London Ventures, which helped reduce costs and improve effectiveness through major programs in cities like Aberdeen and Edinburgh.” “When the Mornington Peninsula role came up, Baker jumped at the opportunity. His time as a consultant on huge, transformative public projects meant that he could hit the ground running. “My skills held me in pretty good stead to help the organization grapple with the issues it faced,” he told the magazine.
