■ Police fired 19 shots to kill three vicious dogs who mauled a young mother, Jordan Garrett (pictured, inset), at a Dandenong property last Thursday morning (Oct. 10). Police were called to a property at Ross St after the mother was attacked on her own property. Officers tried to fend off the dogs by using pepper spray on the wild animals, but it had no effect. The dogs were a pit bull and two bulldogs. Paramedics rushed to the scene and took the woman to Dandenong Hospital. She was said to be fighting for her life. One resident told Nine News: “[The woman] was screaming, the dogs are killing me, I’m dying, I’m dying.”
GROTH, CREWTHER TIP AS CONTENDERS ■ Mornington MLA Chris Crewther and Nepean MLA Sam Groth have each been named in media reports as possible contenders for the State Opposition Leader’s position if John Pesutto is forced out of the role. “Guardian Australia understands Mornington MP Chris Crewther is also considering putting up his hand – but only if a spill is successful,” said Benita Kolovos’s report at theguardian.com “The former federal MP has support from some in Pesutto’s camp who struggle to see how either Battin or Groth would be able to unite the party. “The confusion over the way forward could see Pesutto prevail. Despite the Deeming saga, his leadership has seen the Coalition’s polling improve and the Liberal primary vote is in its best shape since O’Brien was leader.’ Political observers are also looking to Berwick MLA Brad Battin to be a challenger.
● Danielle Di Niese
Operatic sensation at Point Leo
■ Securing international operatic sensation Danielle De Niese is a coup for the Australia Contemporary Opera Company’s summer season which runs from February 21 until March 2. Soprano Danielle is one of several expatriate Australian singers who have found that the world beyond Australia has been keen to showcase their talents. Danielle will be performing at the Festival Gala Dinner at Mornington Peninsula’s Point Leo Estate on March 1, and she will also join the other ACCOC artists in the Festival Showcase on March 2. ● More details on Page 19

● Sam Groth MLA Mr Battin failed in a bid to become the Liberal Opposition leader in March 2021. Michael O’Brien attempted a leadership bid just six months later. Matthew Guy had a second attempt at the leadership role, but he too left the position. John Pesutto, who holds the Hawthorn seat, has been in the spotlight as he fights defamation proceedings from Moira Deeming. “If someone wants to bring a motion at any point, whether it’s next Tuesday or whenever, let them bring it,” Mr Pesutto told reporters on Monday last week (Oct. 7). “Let’s just deal with it calmly and maturely.” Former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett has been critical of a number of Liberal MPs who he claims to be disloyal.
