3 LOCAL CANDIDATES ‘RETIRED’ FROM POLL
■ Three nominees has been eliminated by the Victorian Electoral Commission from the Frankston City and Mornington Peninsula Council elections. Renee Jackson has been ‘retired’ from the Frankston City Council contest for thre Elisabeth Murdoch Ward. Ben Frawley is no longer on the ballot paper for Frankston City Council, Yamala Ward. And Bill Daish has been removed from the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, Briars Ward, election. These candidates were retired prior to ballot papers being printed and will not appear on ballot papers. The VEC said that these candidates were foundto be ineligible to nominate. Some 16 candidates across Victoria were removed, many of these are a result of routine checking by the Department of Government Services and Local Government Victoria crosschecking the VEC’s list of candidates with the register of local government candidate training. This process identified that as of Monday, September 30, 12 candidates did not complete their training as declared in their nominations. “It is a legislative requirement for candidates to complete this training in the two years before election day, in order to be able to nominate,” said a VEC representative.
● Frankston City Council offices “As part of the nomination process, candidates are required to declare they have completed the training and specify a completion date for the training. Over 99 per cent of candidates successfully completed the training. “Before retiring each candidate, the Victorian Electoral Commission provided them with an opportunity to respond to the intention to retire them, as required by the Local Government (Electoral) Regulations 2020. “As a result, some candidates were subsequently matched against the register of local government candidate training and were not retired. This brings the total number of retired candidates to 16, after four candidates were retired just after the close of nominations after being found ineligible to nominate. This brings the current total number of candidates running in the elections to 2215.”

■ Mornington MLA Chris Crewther has spoken in State Parliament about breastfeeding. “You might find it strange for a bloke to get up to talk about milk banks, but this is a very important topic for the health of our future generations,” Mr Crewther said. “Let us step back. Evidence shows that breastmilk is best for babies, ahead of formula, for a whole range of health, growth and immunological reasons. “The WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, a minimum of one year breastfeeding and optimally two years breastfeeding. “Many women breastfeed either directly or via express. However, not all women can breastfeed or sufficiently breastfeed. That often means in many cases that formula is the only choice. “In other cases mothers express more than they need for their own baby or babies, either throwing it away or storing it in the freezer, often not knowing what to do with it. That happened with my own wife Grace and our first daughter Yasmin. “My colleague David Davis in the other place did a great job in government setting up a milk bank in Victoria, but it has since had insufficient investment and rollout across Victoria under this State Labor Government. “I recently had the opportunity to join David and others to see Israel’s milk bank. It is amazing and should be replicated here in Victoria and indeed across Australia. If we do so, we will resolve the situation where women may need access to breastmilk or may have an excess that they can donate, which will help the health of future generations,” Mr Crewther said.

■ Eastern Victoria MLC Renee Heath has highlighted the number of people in the souttheast without homes. “My question is for the Minister for Housing,” Ms Heath told the Legislative Council. “ At a community stakeholder meeting last month I met with various agencies and individuals who deal directly with people affected by homelessness in my region,” Ms Heath said. “I was told that there are currently 8000 people that do not have a home in Cardinia and Dandenong, but this figure is more than likely to be under-reported, as living in a car is not classed as being homeless. “I was told that there are many things that the government can do right now to address this issue, including to stop taxing households that are using a room for short-term housing. “My question to the minister is: are you willing to use all policy levers available to reduce taxes and incentivise households to relieve the burden of homelessness and provide more rooms for people so they can have a safe place to stay?” Ms Heath said.
