‘PAID PARK TRIAL COMES TO AN END’

■ Mornington Peninsula Shire’s paid parking trial is about to come to an end, local MLA Chris Crewther announced in State Parliament last week. “The Mornington Peninsula paid parking trial is about to end. This is a win for community advocacy, the thousands who signed the petition I sponsored and affected locals, visitors and small businesses,” Mr Crewther said. “ I commend the councillors who voted to permanently end the paid parking instead of deferring this decision. “But we must keep up the fight to ensure that paid parking does not come back, given a deferral of the decision to post council elections. “I ask the Council to end paid parking permanently and end any rollout across the peninsula,” Mr Crewther said. Mornington Peninsula Shire published a media statement which said: “: Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has voted to conclude the current pilot while deferring a final decision on the future of permanent Visitor Paid Parking. “The decision to defer, made on September 3, 2024, follows a thorough evaluation of seven months of data from the Pilot at Flinders Pier, Schnapper Point (Mornington), and Sunnyside Beach (Mt Eliza) foreshore sites.”

● Brad Battin, Berwick MLA ■ Berwick MLA Brad Battin says that the State Government has “done nothing” about maintaining local roads. “It is simply unfair that in Victoria we continue to see cuts whilst this Government throws all of its money into one project in Melbourne with the Suburban Rail Loop and none into outer growth areas like mine, where you are seeing Thompsons Rd not getting built, Clyde Rd failing to get any funding put towards it and potholes on major roads through there,” Mr Battin said. “You have seen the delay on the Thompsons Rd roundabout, which is now 2029, and there is no further funding down in Thompsons Rd at all. “When we talk about Clyde Rd, it might as well be a roller-coaster, the way in goes in and out. The developers have done their bit, and the government have done nothing. They are not putting any money into maintenance, and then there are the potholes.” ● Chris Crewther, Mornington MLA

Govt. has done nothing: MP

■ Frankston City Council is committing to two initiatives providing support for vulnerable residents at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness and other challenges such as family violence and poor mental health. Councillors reaffirmed funding a free training program for volunteers working with community groups, charities and not-for-profit organisations providing homelessness support and emergency relief. The Council this year has supported 73 volunteers from 14 different charitable groups to take part in five workshops, covering a range of topics aimed at building skills in conflict resolution, including identifying conflict, improving verbal and non-verbal communication, effective techniques for intervention and strengthening trust. The program also provided volunteers with the opportunity to network and build connections. Given the ongoing need for volunteers to support charitable groups providing emergency relief, the free training has been funded to continue throughout the 2024-2025 financial year. The Council is also facilitating a university placement program that will base two student social workers at Frankston Library.
