SEXUAL ASSAULT ALERT AT CLAYTON ■ Police are appealing for witnesses following two sexually motivated incidents in Clayton earlier this month. Detectives have been told, during the first incident, the victim was on the 733-bus, travelling from Monash University to Clayton Railway Station, when she was sexually assaulted on Sunday, August 4, shortly before 4pm. The victim, who was unable to move due to the crowd on the bus, became visibly upset before witnesses intervened and came to her aid. The male offender, who was seated in the rear seat of the bus, is believed to have also engaged in sexually inappropriate conversations with other passengers. The same man is reported to have approached a teenager when he got off the bus at Clayton Railway Station and made sexually inappropriate comments. Witnesses have again stepped in and helped

the victim who was left shaken and visibly upset. Detectives have made a number of enquiries in relation to the incidents and have identified a person of interest. The man is currently in a correctional facility in relation to other matters. As part of the investigation police are now appealing for further information and assistance from commuters who may have been on the bus or in the vicinity of the railway station at the time. The bus was crowded, after leaving the university with an influx of passengers following an Open Day, as such there were several people in close proximity to the incidents. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incidents or who may have engaged with the man to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log onto www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
30 new homes for women, children
■ Mornington Peninsula Council has decided to make five parcels of Shire-owned land available for social housing, which will see up to 30 new homes built for women and children experiencing homelessness. The Council has partnered with two Housing Associations to undertake 30-year leases of five Shire-owned properties across Hastings and Mornington. The Housing Associations - Women’s Property Initiatives and Young Women’s Christian Association - will develop social housing, providing up to 30 new places for accommodation for women and children. “The 30-year leases demonstrate Council’s commitment to providing housing to people in need and delivers on the Shire’s Triple A Housing Plan, the housing crisis declaration by Council in 2021 and Council’s ongoing advocacy efforts to raise awareness of the housing and homelessness situation on the Peninsula,” said a Shire representative. “In 2023–24, on any given night, up to 689 people experienced homelessness across the municipality, with many sleeping in cars and in tents on back beaches and foreshores. “Social research has shown that lack of appropriate affordable housing, particularly rentals, is the key driver behind the increase in homelessness. Those with high housing costs are particularly vulnerable to cost-ofliving increases. “Of private renters on the Peninsula, 35 per cent are spending more than a third of their income on rent and are therefore experiencing rental stress. In the past year alone, there has been a 33 per cent increase in the number of people seeking homeless crisis support. Of those, 16 per cent are employed.”
