FRANKSTON-BAXTER RAIL BOOST AXED AGAIN

■ Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Federal Labor Government has cut the FrankstonBaxter rail electrification project from its current infrastruxture program. The Government has also cut the proposed Mornington Peninsula Freeway upgrade. Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, said many of the 50 axed projects lacked proper planning and did not have informed costings. “These decisions do ensure that the investment pipeline from the Commonwealth remains affordable, delivers better outcomes for the Australian people in the long term and are aligned with government priorities,” Ms King said. “There are 50 projects that have been cancelled as part of this process.” A key priority of the Committee for Greater Frankston has been the extension of the metropolitan rail line past Frankston to Langwarrin, a distance of just 5 km, and on to Baxter, a further 3 km. In 2020, both the then-Liberal Federal Government and then-Lacor Federal Opposition committed to o provide $225 million, half of the project’s estimated cost.
