■ MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire has begun a new campaign to underscore its plans for lower speed limits on 33 local roads.
$300,000 for Skye
■ A new community play space is coming to life at John Monash Reserve in Skye from June. The $300,000 upgrade will include refurbishment of the existing timber play unit, new swings, spinner and nature play, shade sails, park fencing, tree planting and garden bed improvements and a new picnic area with barbecue and shelter. Cr Suzette Tayler said Frankston Council is passionate about protecting and developing playgrounds and open spaces.

The Council says an interim community sentiment study shows strong community support for the reduction of speed limits. According to the Council, 59 per cent of people support the speed trials, 21 per cent of people oppose, and 20 per cent of people are neutral. The Shire’s survey results indicate that 64 per cent agree that their chance of being involved in a crash on sealed rural roads is much higher at 100 kmh than 80 kmh. Some 21 per cent disagree. Some 57 per cent agree that reduced speed limits will result in less road crashes. Some 24 per cent. disagree.

Mornington Peninsula Shire says that 54 per cent of respondents say that the speed limits are appropriate. Some 26 per cent disagree. Half of those taking place in the survey believe that reduced speed limits make the m feel safer,. Thirty per cent disagree. The survey was undertaken between early November and early December last year. There were 1059 respondents to the survey. A main component of the research was a survey that could be completed online or via phone, said a Council media statement.
