WARRANTS AT D’NONG, BANGHOLME

■ THREE people were arrested when investigators executed search warrants at a business in Paul Ct, Dandenong, and a residential address is Bangholme Rd, Bangholme.

Two men and a woman were arrested during the operation with multiple items rebirthed vehicles seized.

D’nong police probe

■ Local press reports earlier this month said that Casey CIU investigations into a situation relating to Dandenong company I Cook Food were over and there would be “no criminal charges”.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Steve Patton last week announced that senior Victoria Police will probe corruption claims against Greater Dandenong Council, including the alleged planting of a slug in the caterer's kitchen.

The ABC says a brief, which it has seen quotes Detective Sergeant Ash Penry to say: "It became evident to me that a level of corruption, misuse of office and a malicious prosecution were involved in this matter."

Medal returned after bayside discovery ● A World War I British victory medal lost at Chelsea Beach in 1925, and found at Beaumaris in 1980, has been returned the recipient’s family by a Lilydale policeman. The medal has gone on display at the Upwey-Tecoma subbranch of the RSL. 8 stolen vehicles seized

bail, drug, theft and fraud offences relating to 11 motor vehicles valued at approximately $600,000.

He was further remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court until July 14.

A 30-year-old Dandenong woman has been charged with drug, theft and fraud offences relating to nine motor vehicles.

She was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday (Apr. 26).

A 65-year-old man from Bangholme was arrested and released pending further enquiries.

There is an approximate total value of $1.25 million for 31 vehicles.

Driver blew .223: Police Nod to Yarram Ct

■ A grassroots initiative to establish an open air bench as a community meeting space at Hallam Court, Frankston, has received the tick of approval thanks to co-operation between Frankston City Council and residents.

North West Ward Cr Steven Hughes said residents loved catching up and socialising at the spot - dubbed the 'work bench' by locals - with children also doing their homework at the popular meeting site.

"It's a wonderful grassroots initiative and a great place for the community to get together.

The bench also provides a fantastic community connection for locals," Cr Hughes said.

North West Ward Cr Sue Baker said the community and Council had worked together to achieve a great outcome.

Cr Baker also noted Council officers had worked hard behind the scenes, including letter boxing residents, to assess views and assist with the permit process.

"This is a great example of Council being agile, flexible and supportive," Cr Baker said.

A permit has been issued by the Council and it will be reviewed annually.

■ A man has returned an evidentiary breath test of .223 following a collision in Springvale.

The driver of a white Nissan El Grande allegedly collided into another vehicle at the intersection of Westall Rd and Centre Rd. The driver of the Nissan, a 37year-old Dandenong man, failed to stop and continued driving along Centre Rd. A number of witnesses were concerned about the man’s ability to drive, so they followed him until the vehicle came to a stop at the intersection of Springvale Rd. The driver was pulled from the car by witnesses where they waited until Police arrived at the scene.

His licence was immediately suspended, and his vehicle has been impounded for 30 days at a cost of $950.

It is expected he will be charged on summons with drink driving, driving under the influence and other traffic related offences.

The driver and four passengers in the other vehicle were not physically injured as a result of the collision.

● Cr Ray Brown ■ Cardinia Shire Council has paid tribute to Cr Ray Brown who passed away on Frida, April 16, after a prolonged illness.

Cr Ray Brown served as a councillor for Cardinia Shire Council since 2016, representing the Port Ward from 2016 to 2000 alongside Cr Graeme Moore, and representing Western Port Ward since October 2020.

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Cr Brett Owen said Ray would be remembered for his significant contributions to the community both through Council and as a volunteer.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Cr Ray Brown. All of us at Cardinia Shire Council would like to extend our sincere condolences to his wife Ellen, family, friends and wider community that knew and cherished Ray. “Ray was an exceptional councillor and an incredible advocate for his community.

He had a long history of service with the Koo Wee Rup township committee, local clubs, and community centre.

“He was passionate about advocating for and providing good infrastructure for the local community, as well as ensuring buildings, roads, footpaths and drains are properly maintained.

“Ray had a reputation for getting things done, and in his first term was instrumental in projects including improvements at Koo Wee Rup Recreation Reserve, adding three main roads to the sealed roads program and unveiling the Together We Can initiative,” Cr Owen said.

Ray had lived in the region since 1970, and represented Council on a number of committees including the Audit Committee, Grants Evaluation Committee, Motorsports Clubs Steering Committee, Town Planning Committee, Westernport Catchment Implementation Committee, Western Port Biosphere Councillor Liaison Committee, and Yallock Drainage Advisory Committee to Melbourne Water.

He recently celebrated the opening of the multi-million dollar Lang Lang Community Recreation Reserve and Pavilion, and oversaw the first roads commencing in Cardinia Council’s Strategic Sealed Roads program at Koo Wee Rup as well as the commencement of works at Koo Wee Rup Recreation Reserve for a new netball pavilion and a new football and cricket pavilion.

For his service to the community, Cr Ray Brown was awarded Cardinia Shire Citizen of the Year in 2011.

At R.F.Miles Recreation Reserve, the growing participant numbers at Seaford Football Netball Club and Seaford Cricket Club will soon enjoy access to a new two-storey pavilion featuring female friendly changerooms and amenities, umpire rooms, first aid room and social and meetings rooms. A reconfigured larger oval and lighting that meetsAFLstandards, along with new netball courts, cricket nets, a scoreboard and coaches box are also on the way. The R.F. Miles Recreation Reserve pavilion project was made possible by a $2.6 million investment from the Government’s Local Sports Grants initiative.

The new pavilion at Ballam Park includes eight female-friendly changerooms, a kitchen, kiosk, social space, referee changerooms, storage, first-aid facilities and public toilets, as well as new parking and lighting for user safety. The new pavilion is a boon for the Peninsula Strikers which has 300 players and for the first time a facility that is inclusive to female participants. The project also included installation of new lighting for two pitches, allowing even greater utilisation of the pitches for training and games. The State Government has acknowledged Frankston City Council for its investment to help deliver both projects.

Patrols on Gipps. rail corridor ■ Police have issued a number of fines during an operation targeting criminal and anti-social behaviour on regional trains.

Operation Aurora ran on Tuesday and Wednesday l;ast week (Apr. 20-21) and saw Transit Safety Division officers, local uniform and plain clothes police teaming up with authorised officers to patrol V/Line trains and train stations from Southern Cross Station along the Gippsland rail corridor.

Officers conducted approximately 300 people checks and issued a number of penalty notices against the Public Transport Safety Act, including failing to hold a valid ticket and failing to produce evidence of concession.

Officers also focused on detecting and deterring commuter anti-social behaviour, crimes against the person, property damage and vehicle crime with patrols at train stations, including Drouin, Morwell and Traralgon “Victoria Police does not tolerate violence or antisocial behaviour in any setting, and that includes on our public transport networks and transport hubs,” said Transit Safety Division Acting Detective Sergeant Luke Swift .

“We regularly run joint operations with V/ Line from Melbourne onto regional trains and at regional train stations.

“This operation was aimed at targeting antisocial behaviour and public order issues on the Gippsland rail corridor.

The community has the right to feel safe so we will continue to run these operations targeting those who do the wrong thing.”

Victoria’s largest health service.

First stage of the new $76.3 million emergency department at Monash Medical Centre is now complete, meaning families in Melbourne’s expanding south-east have better access to emergency care close to home.

It includes a new emergency department and triage entrance, dedicated children’s emergency area, resus bay and new technology. The entire expansion is expected to be completed in mid-2022.

Meng Heang Tak, Clarinda MLA, said: “We’re continuing to deliver for local families and are proud to have built a world class hospital providing the very best healthcare in purpose-built facilities for kids, closer to home.”

Oakleigh MLA Steve Dimopoulos called the hospial “an incredible facility”.

Sequel to tow truck incident ■ Police have arrested a man in an alleged stolen car in Cranbourne, who was also wanted for allegedly ramming a Police vehicle in a stolen tow truck in the previous week.

Investigators located the man in the alleged stolen car on Collision Rd around 10.30pm Tuesday night (Apr. 20).

It is lleged the man rammed a Police vehicle in a stolen tow truck just after 9.30am on Saturday, April 17.

The 24-year-old Carrum Downs man has been charged with aggravated intentionally exposing an emergency worker to risk by driving, thefts, assault emergency worker, bail and traffic offences.

He was remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. ● Jane Garrett MLC last week joined Mayor Cr Despi O’Connor and Watson Ward Cr Paul Mercurio to officially launch the Tyabb Kindergarten upgrade. The upgrade, which will cost close to $1.5 million, has been made possible by a $727,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

■ Mornington Peninsula Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested a male teenager following an attempted armed robbery in Capel Sound earlier this month.

Detectives arrested the 15-year-old boy and seized an imitation firearm.

The Rye boy was charged with attempted armed robbery and possess imitation firearm and was bailed to appear before a children’s court at a later date.

The charges follow an incident at a food store on Illaroo St where a male allegedly produced an imitation firearm and demanded cash about 12pm on 2 April.

Giant tree at Monash ■ A giant ‘imagination tree’ spanning four levels in the foyer of the Monash Children’s Hospital has been officially opened.

Helath Minister Martin Foley launched the Moose Imagination Tree, which is an interactive space for sick children and families, imagined by the Walt Disney Company and built by Moose Toys.

The Monash Children’s Hospital was opened in 2017 and provides care for more than 100,000 children each year.

The ‘Imagination Tree’ rises through four levels of the hospital providing play, creative and relaxation spaces.

The 16-metre tall interactive space has been created to help children recover during their stay in hospital, no matter how long, as well as entertaining their siblings who are visiting.

ANZAC observed across Frankston

■ Frankston City Council Deputy Mayor Cr Nathan Conroy paid tribute to past and present Australian Defence Force personnel as part of ANZAC Day commemorations last Sunday (Apr. 25).

Cr Conroy said Anzac Day provided an opportunity to pay respect and reflect on the service and sacrifice of all service personnel who had proudly given so much for our nation.

Cr Conroy noted society was hearing more about the complex nature of service and the sometimes complex nature of a military life when it becomes a civilian one.

"To people who wish to express their respect and gratitude to both those who have died in service and our current veterans we need not limit that regard for our servicemen and women to particular dates. To those who have served in conflicts - we recognise the extraordinary challenges and risks confronting you both on and off the field," Cr Conroy said.

■ Greater Dandenong Council says it is aware that ome works appear to have commenced on site at 21-23 Loxwood Ave, Keysborough.

“After discussions with the developer it has been confirmed that these relate to minor works including fixing a water leak and providing protective fencing for the existing trees on site,” said a Council statement.

The Council received an application for a Development Plan for the address in August 2017. This sought in principle agreement to build 44 dwellings on the site. Council did not support the in principle proposal, however an amended Development Plan with 42 dwellings was subsequently approved by VCAT in June 2018.

Somerville death ■ A man died following a two-car collision in Somerville last week.

It is believed the driver of a Daihatsu travelling on Western Port Highway has veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head on with a Mitsubishi just before 2.30pm Monday (Apr. 19).

The sole occupant of the Daihatsu died at the scene.

The sole occupant of the Mitsubishi was not injured but taken to hospital for observation as a precaution.

The exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined at this stage.

Well done Bree-Anne ■ Mornington Peninsula Shire has congratulated Bree-Anne Pagaonis of Somerville for her success in the 2021 Victorian Young AchieverAwards.

Bree was the winner of the Luminary Tech Visionary Award for creating an accessible platform that enhances food experiences for women.

Bree co-founded WIRL, a social enterprise that helps women create time, energy and brain space by re-teaching them how to eat. The aim is for users to worry less about food, health and their bodies, and spend more time doing things they love.

Bree received her award at a Gala Presentation which was held at the Grand Ballroom, Sofitel Melbourne on Collins.

3 teens charged ■ Three teenage girls have been charged following an alleged attempted carjacking in Cranbourne.

The trio, all aged 15, were arrested following the incident at a shopping centre on High St about 3.40pm.

It is alleged they assaulted a 48-year-old Clyde North woman after they attempted to steal the keys to her vehicle.

The victim was bitten during the assault and allegedly threatened with a screwdriver before the trio fled on foot.

Police arrested the teens shortly after the incident.

A Pakenham girl has been charged with attempted aggravated carjacking, armed robbery and assault with intent to rob.

Two girls from Cranbourne East and Melton West have both been charged with attempted aggravated carjacking, armed robbery, assault with intent to rob and commit indictable offence while on bail.

They will appear at a children’s court at a later date.

Stolen car arrest at Narre ■ Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested two youths and two men in a stolen vehicle in Narre Warren .

Police were patrolling Princes Hwy when they spotted the stolen white Toyota Camry baring false plates just before 9pm.

It is alleged the driver then conducted a Uturn to travel west along the Princes Hwy before failing to give way at the intersection of Fleetwood Dve and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Rd, colliding with another vehicle travelling south.

Officers arrested the four occupants at the scene.

The driver, an 18-year-old Epping man, was charged with theft of motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and unlicenced driving.

He was remanded in custody and was expected to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

An 18-year-old Hallam man was charged with attempted armed robbery which allegedly occurred on Scott St, Dandenong, during the morning of April 21, theft of motor vehicle, unlawful assault, commit indictable offence while on bail and driving offences.

He was remanded in custody and was ex-

pected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

A 16-year-old South Melbourne boy sustained minor injuries and was under hospital guard.

A 13-year-old Hampton girl was conveyed to hospital for observation before being released pending further enquiries.

It is alleged the Toyota was stolen outside Clayton Rd, Clayton just before 9pm on April 20.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 63-yearold Berwick man, was not injured.

Dog park at D’nong ■ Tirhatuan Dog Park in Dandenong North has reopened following major upgrades funded by the State Government.

The Government provided $153,500 to the City of Greater Dandenong to carry out upgrades, which have delivered a new dedicated small dog area, agility equipment, and shelters and picnic tables.

The investment was funded through the $2.7 billion Building Works program, which is funding hundreds of shovelready projects across the state to create jobs and drive Victoria’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

It complements the $154 million Suburban Parks Program – which will create or upgrade 6500 hectares of public open space, including parkland and new trails, plus pocket parks and off-leash dog parks across Melbourne.

More than 30 dog parks are also planned soon, including Carrum Downs, Belgrave and in regional centres.

“I congratulate City of Greater Dandenong on delivering a terrific, purpose built off-leash dog park for the community and their four-legged friends to enjoy,” said Gabrielle Williams, Dandenong MLA. Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, said: ““We promised to invest in dog parks for families and their pets to enjoy – and we’re delivering.”

“The investment in open space – such as parks and dog parks – is an important investment that is creating local jobs, making life better for families and building on our reputation as one of the world's most liveable cities.”

6 males arrested ■ Dandenong Police have charged six males following an alleged pursuit in Melbourne’s south east last week.

A 17-year-old Cranbourne boy was charged with theft, handle stolen goods, weapons and bail offences as well as possessing a drug of dependence.

A 17-year-old Narre Warren boy was charged with theft, handle stolen goods and possessing a drug of dependence.

A 17-year-old Narre Warren boy was charged with theft and handle stolen goods.

A 16-year-old Cranbourne boy was charged with theft and handle stolen goods.

A 15-year-old Cranbourne North boy was charged with theft, handle stolen goods and bail offences.

They were all remanded and will appear at a children’s court at a later date.

An 18-year-old Oakleigh South man was charged with theft, handle stolen goods, bail and traffic offences.

He has been remanded in custody to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court..

The charges follow an alleged pursuit involving a black Mercedes CLA35 that was observed by police on Rata St in Wheelers Hill.

Council News Smart parking in Mornington

■ The Mornington Smart Parking trial is already having an impact by reducing congestion in the busy precinct and helping drivers find a car park easier, according to Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.

Launched in late December, 100 inground sensors were installed throughout Mornington and will be trialled for six months.

“Now that Main St has been reopened, we will be relocating around 50 sensors currently on side streets to Main St between the Esplanade and Barkly St,” said a Council statement.

“This is the second township to trial smart parking on the Peninsula. In the past two summers, the Shire trialled similar technology in Rye. “The trial aims to make accessing Mornington easier and more convenient, while providing a better parking experience for both residents and tourists,” said Mayor Cr Despi C’Connor.

“We’re surprised by the amount of overstayed parking in Mornington. Between January and February alone there were 6700 overstays, with around 2400 of these staying more than 30 minutes above the prescribed time limit. We are confident this smart parking technology will help us to increase parking availability and improve convenience and fairness for drivers.”

Cr Steve Holland said: “The trial will also help to gain more insight on parking behaviours and management and assess the suitability of long-term smart parking technology in Mornington.

“We are committed to increasing access to parking spots by providing fairer, easier access to the limited amount of car parks, especially during peak periods.”

Cr Anthony Marsh said: A “Smart parking technology has been proven to significantly reduce the time it takes to find a parking space and reduce car emissions in other cities and townships.

“This technology will also assist businesses on Main Street to have a higher turnover of customers by reducing congestion and overstaying vehicles in the area,” Cr Marsh said.

Happy at Hallam Hall ■ The City of Casey celebrated a major refurbishment to the Hallam Recreation Reserve Hall this month.

Built in the 1930s, the Hallam Recreation Reserve Hall has continued to be one of Casey’s busiest recreation facilities, providing spaces for diverse community organisations, sport and health clubs.

The Council set upon a renewal program for the hall, to ensure it could meet the current and future needs of community groups and residents.

The $1.7 million refurbishment included floor surface renewal, installation of a new wall and retractable stage to the main hall.

The amenity upgrades included an additional kitchen fit out, new electrical wiring and lighting throughout, and external and internal wall lining upgrades.

Externally, new carparking bays where established and new pavement was laid to improve access to the building, as well as upgrades to the existing stormwater service and water supply and a new sewer line.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff acknowledged how essential the hall was for ongoing community connections.

Police raid at Moorabbin ■ Officers from the Caulfield Divisional Response Unit have executed two search warrants, arresting two people and seizing drugs and stolen property in bayside Melbourne.

Police executed simultaneous search warrants on a residence in Ormond and a storage facility in Moorabbin, just before 9.30am on Wednesday (Apr. 21).

A 40-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested at the North Rd, Ormond address and seized items including: ■ methylamphetamine ■ MDMA ■ cannabis ■ prescription medication, ■ butendiol ■ cash ■ stolen motorcycle Additional items were seized at the Wren Rd, Moorabbin storage facility including: ■ methylamphetamine ■ prescription drugs, ■ prohibited weapons ■ a handgun ■ a large quantity of stolen power tools ■ stolen motorbike The Ormond pair taken into custody were assisting Police with their enquiries.

Celebrations at Cranbourne West ■ The City of Casey celebrated the opening of Cranbourne West Community Hub with a range of family fun activities over the weekend.

The state-of-the-art, dual level $9.7 million community facility hosts flexible and shared multi-use spaces for community members to connect, belong, learn and play.

Since opening to the public in January this year, the hub has already been bustling with community programs and activities and already has 18 regular hirers.

The hub includes spaces and services for all ages, cultures and community group.

Dedicated to disabled ■ Frankston City Council says it is dedicated to reducing barriers for people with a disability as part of work on the Disability Action Plan 2021 2026.

Deputy Mayor Cr Nathan Conroy said the Plan was an important strategic document, adding it was essential those with a disability felt more included, connected and valued in Frankston City.

"Feedback and responses will directly influence the priorities and actions in our Disability Action Plan. We will analyse and deliberate on the community feedback with Frankston City's Disability Access and Inclusion Committee volunteers, to set priorities and make recommendations for the Plan," Cr Conroy said.

Frankston Council is seeking feedback and ideas around local barriers to access and inclusion.

Century-old medal finds home

■ A World War I British victory medal lost at Chelsea Beach in 1925, and found at Beaumaris in 1980, has been returned the recipient’s family by a Lilydale policeman.

The medal has gone on display at the UpweyTecoma sub-branch of the RSL. Sgt Vaughan Atherton from Lilydale Police discovered that the medal recipient was Fitzroyborn Private Robert Stanley Gordon Smith of the 5th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force.

In 1980 a medal was located at Beaumaris beach. The finder of the medal was married at the time but later passed away. His wife re-married and both she and her partner are local members of the Upwey Belgrave RSL Sub Branch, also a member of the branch after serving as an Army Reservist for nine years.

Sgt Atherton got to work searching for the rightful owner of the medal, a Private Smith.

Private Smith’s details were tracked through the National Archives of Australia. He was born in Fitzroy in 1891.

He enlisted at Broadmeadows on August 7, 1915 and formed part of the 13th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion AIF and served in France where he was wounded in action twice.

He returned to Australia where he met and

married Ada Grace Nicholl. Private Smith passed away on April 23, 1963, and is buried at the Coburg Cemetery.

In his service record is a Statutory Deceleration where he requests the replacement of his ‘Badge’ which he lost at Chelsea beach in 1925 Sgt Atherton located two living descendants of the family line and reunited the war medal with the rightful family.

Nephew Alan Norster has said he was delighted to receive the call “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to have this medal put on display at Upwey- Belgrave RSL museum. I am sure Private Smith’s medal will be treasured by all present and future RSL members”.

Observations Aida ■ After more than a year of no Opera Australia at the State Theatre, the company is back with a bang.

Opening at the State Theatre on May 6 is Opera Australia's Aida, its first fully digital production.

While you can be assured that the singers will be gloriously live, the magic of technology will take us to the world of Egypt in a way we have never experienced before.

Opera Australia's Artistic Director, Lyndon Terracini promises that we are going to be wowed with this production of the Verdi classic.

"Aida has a huge cast, the singing, the score and the music are all amazing, the costumes are stunning and with the digital screens, the result is nothing short of spectacular," he enthused.

So what will the audience see on the first night of Aida?

There will be 10 huge LED screens, with ever-changing floor to ceiling set pieces present video design that ranges from rich symbolism to vivid landscapes.

Bringing the magic of Verdi's music to us are American soprano Leah Crocetto as Aida, tenor Stefano La Colla as Radames, and French-Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Gabouri, with basses Alexander Vinogradov and David Parkin (you may recall him as the winner of Operatunity Oz several years ago on ABC TV) and baritone Michael Honeyman.

Aida has been a winner ever since its premiere in 1871, and follows the story of the beautiful slave girl Aida, who is attracting more than her share of attention when it comes to love.

Child of Now ■ A groundbreaking, technology-driven public art commission titled Child of Now will loom large over Hamer Hall, Melbourne for 10 days in 2024.

Arts Centre Melbourne and the University of Melbourne are partnering in support of Child of Now, conceived by artist Robert Walton and co-written by First Nations author and activist Claire G. Coleman.

The work calls on 14,400 Melburnians to create, shape and nurture a vision of the future for an imagined child born in 2021.

The large-scale, interactive augmented reality child will be represented as a 100-metrehigh virtual being residing atop of Hamer Hall, visible on digital screens and mobile devices.

This mammoth undertaking, currently in the first stage of its development, is an interdisciplinary collision of arts and computer science.

The Child of Now will age from 0 to 100 years over an epic 10-day performance. Across each of these days, the Child of Now will live a ‘normal’ day – walking, playing, communicating, interacting and dreaming across each 24-

-hour cycle. On the tenth day, the Child of Now will be 100 and go to sleep for a final time at a candle-lit vigil attended by thousands of visitors and watched online by thousands more around the world.

Some 14,400 people from Melbourne’s diverse population will collectively set the vision for a more equitable, sustainable, peaceful and inclusive future for the Child of Now. 14,400 represents the number of minutes in 10 days.

Walton, Coleman and a team of technology specialists from the University of Melbourne will collaborate with the public to give life to the moving image via volumetric body scanning and interactive extended reality technologies in this compelling public artwork.

Child of Now will result in the largest and most diverse portrait of Melbourne’s population ever created, generated from the thousands of participants’ faces, gestures and dreams.

For the first time, audience members will have the opportunity to become the Child of Now via a volumetric 3D body scan and virtual reality experience.

Under Geoff Arnold's direction, the play tells of Bob and Fran Price having loved each other for 30 years, building a home and raising four strong children.

At the end of it all, they are left asking: Was it worth it? Who are we, now that the children have gone?

Things I Know to be True is promoted as a funny and honest account of family life in the Australian suburbs. Over the course of one year, the four adult Price children struggle to establish their identities and deal with personal crises.

Bovell structures his play around a single year, and over its course each of the Price children hits a point of emotional rupture with their parents.

Terrible words are said and entire life paths are questioned. Each one of the Prices must face the fact that (in Rosie’s words): “People aren’t perfect. Even the people you love. Especially the people you love.”

■ After over 30 years of loyal service to the development of the City of West Hollywood, City manager Paul Arevalo is sadly moving on.

Paul served as the Executive Director of the West Hollywood Redevelopment Agency and was Chief Executive Officer of City Hall.

Mr Arevalo is also the Chair of the Pasadena Rose Bowl and has served on three Pasadena City commissions.

He will be sadly missed in West Hollywood as one of the most approachable City Managers and also an executive that got things done.

Lindsey Horvath is moving on after her reign as West Hollywood Mayor finishes to compete for a supervisors position on the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors and her campaign looks strong with the endorsement of former member of the California State Senate and Los Angeles County Supervisor for the 3rd district, Shelia Kuehl.

Paul and Lindsay will be missed greatly. They both had passion and determination to get the job done.

Sports watching declines ■ Nearly half of Americans changed their sports viewing habits as progressive political messaging took over sporting events, according to a new poll.

The YouGov/Yahoo News poll released on Monday showed that about three times as many Americans who started watching more sports in the midst of social justice messages actually watched less, Yahoo Sports reported.

About 11 per cent of poll respondents said they watch more sports on TV because leagues and athletes are embracing political advocacy. However, more than one-third (34.5 percent) said they were watching less.

The majority of poll respondents, 56.3 per cent, said their sports viewing was not altered by political or social messaging.

When broken into political parties, 13.7 per cent of Democrats said they watched more sports and 53 per cent of Republicans said they watched less.

About 8.7 per cent of independent voters said they watched more sports following the change to social justice messaging and 38.6 per cent watched less.

Link to processed meat ■ Can a slice of bacon a day lead to dementia later in life?

Researchers say eating just a small amount of processed meat each day significantly increases the risk of mental decline.

Their study of nearly 500,000 people in the United States finds consuming 25 grams daily, about two crispy strips of bacon, raises dementia risk by 44 per cent.

These products include bacon, sausages, canned meats, and cured items like salami. On the other hand, study authors reveal eating unprocessed red meat may actually lower the chances of developing the disease.

Consuming 50 grams of meats like beef, pork, and veal contributed to a 19 per cent decrease in dementia risk. The team discovered the connection while examining the link between eating meat overall and dementia onset.

The condition affects between 5 and 8 per cent of all adults over 60 years-old, with Alzheimer's disease being the most common variety.

"Worldwide, the prevalence of dementia is increasing and diet as a modifiable factor could play a role,"?lead researcher and PhD student Huifeng Zhang says in a university release.

"Our research adds to the growing body of evidence linking processed meat consumption to increased risk of a range of nontransmissible diseases."

■ When is the best time to have breakfast every morning?

According to a new study, you shouldn't wait too long. That's because eating breakfast before 8.30am could reduce one's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, researchers say.

The study by Northwestern University researchers shows that people who have eaten before 8.30am had lower blood sugar levels and less insulin resistance.

The finding won't be welcome news to those who follow intermittent fasting, a popular dieting strategy that typically requires one to wait until about 10 am to eat. Instead, enjoying your first snack of the day early on may be better for you, regardless of what time you stop eating.

"We found people who started eating earlier in the day had lower blood sugar levels and less insulin resistance, regardless of whether they restricted their food intake to less than ten hours a day or their food intake was spread over more than 13 hours daily," lead study author Dr Marriam Ali says in a statement.

"These findings suggest that timing is more strongly associated with metabolic measures than duration, and support early eating strategies."

Insulin resistance happens when the body does not respond as well to insulin produced by the pancreas, and glucose is less able to enter the cells.

People with insulin resistance might be at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Both insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels affect a person's metabolism, or the breaking down of food to proteins, carbohydrates or sugars, and fats.

US bail out ■ As Americans start to receive the latest round of stimulus cheques, a new analysis reveals that about $4.38 billion will also go to illegal immigrants.

The Centre for Immigration Studies estimates that 2.65 million illegal immigrants have Social Security numbers that allow them to receive stimulus chequess. T his group of illegal immigrants can be described as "aliens temporarily present without status," according to Steven Camarota, director of research for the Centre for Immigration Studies.

"These individuals are in the country illegally and could be required to leave. Yet, under the current system, they are still given work authorisation and Social Security numbers," he said.

They include Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and Temporary Protected Status recipients.

In addition, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services issued 882,000 work authorisations and Social Security numbers to other illegal immigrants in fiscal year 2020, the analysis states.

These include asylum applicants, as well as those applying for adjustment of status and suspension of deportation, among other categories.

■ HBO host Bill Maher suggested that the United States is "entering an era of re-segregation that's coming from the left" during a Friday night Real Time conversation with Democratic data scientist David Shor.

Shor, who worked on former President Barack Obama's 2012 campaign and is currently head of data science at progressive non-profit Open Labs, was making the case that since most Americans do not agree with leftist values, Democrats should instead focus on issues most people "agree with us on" in order to win elections.

"We seem to be entering an era of re-segregation that's coming from the left," Maher said, responding to a comment

by Shor about the "geographic sorting" of liberals trending to urban areas. "I mean, on many college campuses, there are separate dorms, separate black dorms, graduation ceremonies, stuff like that. How will that affect elections in the future?"

Outlawing ‘Mom’, ‘Dad’ ■ Once they took out Dumbo and Pepe Le Pew, it was only a matter of time until the language police doubled down. An elite school in Manhattan has advised the school "community", that means not just the staff but students and parents, to stop saying "mom" and "dad," or even "parents," advising them to instead say "grown-ups, folks, or family."

The Grace Church School, which charges $57,000 for students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade, put out a 12-page guide addressed to the school community that bans a slew of words, phrases and even ideas.

"The goal of this guide is to provide the community with more inclusive language that is aligned with the mission of Grace Church School," reads the guide.

"While we recognize hateful language that promotes racism, misogyny, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination are already addressed in our school handbooks, we also recognize that we can do more than ban hateful language; we can use language to create welcoming and inclusive spaces.

This guide addresses ways we can remove harmful assumptions from the way we interact with each other."

"Families are formed and structured in many ways. At Grace Church School, we use inclusive language that reflects this diversity," the guide says. "It's important to refrain from making assumptions about who kids live with, who cares for them, whether they sleep in the same place every night, whether they see their parents, etc."

■ Sunset Boulevard is on my list of 10 favourite films. In 1950 Nancy Olson was only 22 when she was cast in the role of Betty Schaefer by Paramount Studios.

Nancy received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance opposite William Holden and Gloria Swanson.

Nancy was born in Milwaukee in 1928, educated at the University of Wisconsin and later moved to California.

She was spotted by a talent agent in a stage production and signed to a seven-year contract

by Paramount Studios.

After a good part in the western film Canadian Pacific, Nancy landed the "role of a lifetime" in Sunset Boulevard.

I did speak to Nancy Olson several years ago for a radio interview. Nancy told me that whilst they were filming Sunset Boulevard William Holden was having marital problems, he was not getting good roles and his career was a bit shaky.

The character of ‘Joe Gillis’ could not have come at a better time in his career and he was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award.

Nancy went on to make three more films with William Holden. During her film career she was cast opposite some of Hollywood's famous older leading men. Her co-stars included, Randolph Scott, John Wayne and Fred MacMurray.

Smith explores shifts and similarities that artist face in their lives and artistic practices and attempts to break down the how and why of making art.

The conversations will be launched with an exhibition featuring MPRG collection works by the artists, alongside additional works by Sally Smart and Katherine Hattam, who Smith has previously interviewed.

The exhibition also includes new artworks made by Smith, inspired by learnings from the discussions.

■ Science Gallery Melbourne is the first and only Australian node on the internationally acclaimed Science Gallery Network.

It will open a new state-of-the-art gallery in June, offering over 3,500 sqm of exhibition space, a learning centre, a theatre, workshops and social spaces, designed to inspire young adults through ar, science and innovation.

Since 2017 Science Gallery Melbourne has created exhibitions and programs in a series of disparate venues and pop-up sites around Melbourne - from an historical gymnasium to the Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne, to an underground carpark, a shipping container, Maribyrnong and Yarra rivers, and city laneways, streets and gardens.

I n June it will launch its own purpose-built gallery on the corner of Gratton and Swanston Sts, a gateway to the University of Melbourne's new Melbourne Connect Innovation precinct, and a major new attraction, delivering immersive interactive exhibitions and events focussed on the collision of art and science.

The coproduction will involve scenes in Sunshine, St Albans, Collingwood and Kew. Film is due for worldwide release in 2022.

■ Way back when 3XY was a battling radio station they came up with the idea to have a team of reporters on the road driving around the streets of Melbourne reporting on the state of traffic.

The launch day arrived and reporters stood beside their respective car for official picture shoot. Problem was, one reporter was missing. Turned out he was in jail for unpaid parking fines A frantic whip around ensured, the picture op was delayed for a few hours until ‘prisoner’ was released on bail.

● Meredith Lodge's Darren Gibson presented a cheque for $2200 to the Geelong Coast Guard to enable them to purchase a new Defibrillator. The Lodge was assisted by the Freemasons Foundation Victoria to raised the money to assist this most worthy community organisation.

A Masonic Social Committee at Ballarat heard that a new fridge and freezer needed replacing in the Hospital. laboratory The replacement fridge is used to store a multitude of antibody samples, and with a cost of around $100 per vial, this fridge is a vital piece of equipment.

The Committee is part of the Sturt-Buninyong United Lodge No. 23.

Hello, my name is David Waugh. I live in the Macedon Ranges. I would like to tell you about a men’s fraternity to which I belong. The group is called the Freemasons.

As a hobby, I enjoy old cars, and I am currently President of the Daimler and Lanchester Car Club.

As I say, there are about 7600 Freemasons in Victoria. We support each other, our families and the community.

My husband Paul and I operate a horse rescue farm, buying horses from the racing and show worlds, and giving them new lives such as riding for the disabled, and personal rehabilitation work.

Across the world, there are about six million Freemasons. We actively seek to promote international understanding. We believe mankind should be exactly that.

I have has a life-long association with Freemasonry. I joined Wesley Collegians Lodge when I was in my 20s. You don’t have to been to any particular school to become a Freemason. There are no academic courses to pass.

Our members meet each month.

We learn life lessons (degrees), share a meal and a drink with each other, we have social functions that include our family members, and we enjoy doing charity work. We can also visit our mates at other Lodges. It’s fun.

The Australian Army Cadets is the youth military program and organisation of the Australian Army, tasked with supporting participants to contribute to society, fostering interest in Defence Force careers, and developing support for the Force.

The membership of a local Freemasons’ Lodge is likely to include a wide variety of members such as mechanics, engineers, office staff, outdoor workers, as well as doctors, lawyers and professional people.

Every occupation under the sun.

Together in Victoria, we donate about $2 million-$3 million to worthy causes through our Freemasons Foundation. And we roll up our sleeves to volunteer for practical hands-on work such as Bushfire and Disaster relief.

My community life has included membership of Rotary, active participation as a Church Warden at St Paul’s in Kyneton, and as a volunteer at the monthly Farmers’ Market in the Macedon Ranges region.

Freemasonry is not a religion. In fact, we don’t talk about religion or politics at our meetings. Across Victoria, there are many Masonic Centres where Lodges meet. We have 240 Lodges.

Our members are keen on making the world a better place.

Each Freemason has their own belief in a Supreme Being, but that is their own personal business. We work towards self-improvement.

There are about six million Freemasons worldwide. There are 7600 active members in Victoria. These are good men who want to become better men.

In my professional life, I was a school teacher at Ivanhoe. I also worked with young men and women as a Lieutenant-Colonel with the Australian Army Cadets.

We look out for opportunities to support each other. We go out of our way to avoid internal club quarrels.

At a time when the conduct of some males is justifiably under question in society, I thought you might like to know there is a fraternity of men who prize best behaviours, good manners and kindness.

This means becoming better citizens, better husbands and better fathers. For older men, that means being better grandfathers. Often it is the grandparents who play a chief role in bringing tolerance and understanding in families, especially when diversity and inclusion can be challenges.

Men, aged 18 or over, may benefit from considering membership of Freemasons Victoria.

With "Godzilla vs. Kong" stomping ferociously on screens around Australia, this monumental foot-stomping, earth shaking, city smashing monster-mash-up creature-feature of a battle of the titans is a loud, head-thumping romp that lacks any form of intelligence or plausibility, filled from beginning to end with all the mind-numbing ingredients, now less the man in a rubber suit, that have made the "Godzilla" and his fan base a trashy diet for over five decades.

Following on from 2014s "Godzilla," the stellar cast that includes "Stranger Things" Millie Bobby Brown, along with Kyle Chandler, Charles Dance, Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Ziyi Zhang, Sally Hawkins, and David Strathairn, this over flows with cliché and banal dialogue that tries to give "Godzilla" higher meaning, but fails miserably as they are seemingly searching for the plot as they confusingly try to figure out how to save the world as the giants running amok and battling each other.

Reflective of 1968s Toho monster-mash "Destroy All Monsters," the consistently dark and murky cinematography make it all the more a confusing and strained experience, however, on a positive note, the big feller is in it for considerably more that his 2014 effort, which was around 11 minutes, and if you like your creature features, or most notably the long running "Godzilla" franchise, you may find something here to relish, but sadly, this time around, the great "Godzilla" is nothing more than a poor and laughable facsimile of himself, one that we have seen too far many times before.

Based on the true story of the 'Battle of Kamdesh' in 2009, this may lack the mega-budget of Ridley Scott's similarly themed "Black Hawk Down" (2001) or more recently the "behind-the-scenes whizz-bang technical wizardry of Sam Mendes' "1917," among others, but nonetheless, this is still very much an exciting, compelling and respectfully crafted slice of 'against-all-odds' combat and survival that succeeds in depicting the prodigious power of courage and valour without falling into false heroics, sentimentality or cliché.

Obviously filmed on a minimal budget, the cast includes Scott Eastwood (Pacific Rim: Uprising/Fate of the Furious), Caleb Landry Jones (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean/ Lord of the Rings), Milo Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge) and Jack Kesy (12 Strong), and among others, all give an effectively solid equal measure of determination and strength in bringing this extraordinary story to the screen, ultimately a fitting tribute to all those who took part in the battle.

Directed by Rod Lurie, whose previous credits include the superb politically based thrillers "Deterrence" (1999), the Oscar nominated "The Contender" with Joan Allen and Jeff Bridges, (2000) and "The Last Castle" (2001) with Robert Redford and James Gandolfini, has delivered 21st Century "Zulu" (1964), a tightly raw and unflinching war experience that will also leave you with an overwhelming disbelief at the sheer ignorance and stupidity of military decision making, and that it does very little, if anything, to inspire a career in the armed forces.

Stars: * * * Review: In 1947 in British India, the parents of a young girl have died from cholera, so she is sent away to her uncle in England where she discovers a magical garden hidden at her embittered uncle's estate.

First filmed in 1919, and again in 1949 by MGM with Margaret O'Brien, then numerous times since for the big and small screens, this latest film adaptation based on the classic 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett is not the best representation so far, most notably suffering from an elusiveness of any strong emotional grip and balance between reality and GGI fantasy, but nonetheless, it does have an abundance on offer throughout, from beautifully beguiling visual razzle-dazzle to some strikingly gothic splendour.

Rourke’s Reviews Rocks ■ (M). 93 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

In what is a British variation on Hirokazu Kore-eda's outstanding 2004 drama, Nobody Knows, this heartfelt, utterly believable look at a group of school friends and what happens when one of them encounters a terrible situation which spirals out of control, is both moving and charming.

The story centres on Rocks (Bukky Bakray), a high school student who lives with her mother Funke (Layo-ChristinaAkinlude), and younger brother Emmanuel (D'angelou Osei Kissiedu), in a housing commission flat.

The teenage girl has a close group of friends she adores, and has aspirations to be a beautician.

One day, Rocks comes home from school to discover that Funke has left them, leaving some money for food but not much else.

Suddenly having to take on responsibilities beyond her age, Rocks tries to protect and look after Emmanuel, while keeping her predicament a secret from everyone around her (she has an inherent distrust in the government system), including her best friend Sumaya (Kosar Ali).

But as circumstances worsen, Rocks begins to crack under the pressure, which has a ripple effect on the relationships around her.

Newcomer Bakray won the Rising Star Award at this year's BAFTAs, and this could be a similar star-making performance like Yuya Yagira's Cannes Award winning turn was in Nobody Knows.

Ali is also excellent as the growingly worried Sumaya (the entire cast is terrific).

Co-writer/director Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane, Suffragette) crafts her best film to date, and has given the film added authenticity by workshopping the material with her young actors before filming began.

While not as harrowing and heartrending as Nobody Knows, Rocks is a film filled with real energy and emotion, and offers, to a degree, some sense of hope for its young characters.

Deliver Us From Evil ■ Deliver Us From Evil : The Final Cut (R). 114 minutes. Now available on Limited Edition, 2 Disc Blu-ray.

Despite a number of familiar plot elements, this is an effectively dour, expertly crafted action/thriller that shows two anti-heroes fighting each other over very different views on what the true meaning of family

is. Hwang Jung-min plays In-nam, an ex-NIS agent-turned assassin who has just completed his Tokyolocated final mission before retiring to the beaches of Panama. In Thailand, In-nam's former lover is murdered after their young daughter Yoo-min (Park So-yi) is abducted.

Hearing the tragic news, In-nam travels to Thailand to find Yoo-min, and to also investigate who killed her mother.

Unfortunately, the brother of the vicious yakuza In-nam recently assassinated, appropriately called Ray The Butcher (Lee Jung-Jae), has also arrived on the scene, wanting to exact bloody revenge.

Helping In-nam is transsexual Yoo-yi (Park Jung-min), a Korean ex-pat who has never encountered carnage like this in her life.

While the basic storyline plays to formula, the particular aspect which intrigued me most was seeing two men, both with dark pasts, interpreting through conflicting eyes, the primary reason which they feel justifies the inordinate amount of death and destruction they create.

While violent, writer/director Hong Won-chan (whose directorial debut, Office, was moody, absorbing, but uneven) presents quite a bit of the brutality around the edge of the frame or completely offscreen (similar to Fernando Meirelles' underrated 2008 film, Blindness), but this is still not recommended for the squeamish.

Hwang (The Spy Gone North, The Wailing) and Lee (Assassination, The Thieves) offer convincing, deliberately opposed performances, successfully re-teaming after appearing together in the marvellous 2013 gangster drama, New World.

There is also excellent work from Park (The King, Psychokinesis) as Yoo-yi, which won him the Korean Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor this year.

Production values are exceptional.

While there is too much in the plotting which prevents it from being truly original, and its slow-burn pacing and quiet stretches will annoy diehard action fans, Deliver Us From Evil has a fascinating theme at its core, and combined with strong acting and first-rate action, is intriguing enough to provide solid entertainment.

This cut is six minutes longer than the version which was screened in cinemas.

At Irene Mitchell Theatre, South Yarra ■ “If you’re not paying for the product, then you are the product” is a great line from Analog with which to start .

Presented by Three Fates Theatre in the intimate Irene Mitchell Theatre, South Yarra, the 1960s squat style set greets us with nods to Greta, data control and surveillance, “be alert” warnings, milk crate furniture, floor bedding - all inside a shipping container, where five guerrilla rebels count down to the revolution intended to destroy data banks controlling the country.

A sleeping figure is unaware of a furtive entry, a theft ... and from then onwards there is little relief from the tensions that arise as any suggestion of regular human interactions seems overwhelmed by doubts about each other.

A brief chance of love ends with the line “you’re always offloading to something bigger ...” Isn’t that the problem with revolutions?

Within the worthy dream, there is often a vagueness, flaw or inability to detect a few important details that may determine the success or otherwise of the revolution.

It’s impossible not to reflect on Orwell’s prescient 1984 as these passionate world changers double check their plans to offer their own lives to re order life towards personal rather than a technologically controlled dystopian world. But while they have planned to destroy the dystopian world they see overtaking them, their own micro-

last moments are virtually dystopian. There is a depth of sadness in this play as we realize that all five are already affected by the Big Brother data controlling their lives as they turn on each other. It seems there will be no redemption.

“Elections manipulate who you are.”

A mention of surveillance and the 5K radius within which the five must stay naturally registered lockdown memories, and the outcry about personal liberties that we lost over months in Victoria.

Be alert to data control before it is too late .

Author Thalia Dudek is joined on stage by Ellie Barkla, Laurence Young, Zoe Hawkins and Sarah Fitzgerald in presenting this powerful, thought provoking piece at Irene Mitchell Theatre, St Martins Youth Art Centre until May 1.

So begins Billy Loves Cha Cha Forever! A wide-eyed innocent has been found murdered.

Throw in some double-cross action with a gangster and a smoking gun, and the audience is keen to figure out the mystery.

Set in 1960s Kings Cross, Noel Anderson’s play takes on classic noir telling the story of a tormented heroine, the Queen of the Cross, Cha Cha, played by Samuel Thompson, a sadistic villain, Louis, played by Luke Styles and young runaway street hustler, Billy, played

by Sebastiano Pitruzzello.

The costumes, as you’d expect, were fabulous.

The soundtrack by Ron Michaelis and Dan Taylor was spot on including the likes of Engelbert Humperdinck, Nancy Sinatra and Russell Morris.

There was even an original torch song by Daniel Abineri.

This drama of a ‘femme fatale in a Raymond Chandler’ novel should work.

There were some great lines: “I feel like Patty Duke in Valley of the Dolls’.

There were laughs courtesy of some very funny, old-time Aussie slang: ‘You’ve got a face someone won in a chook raffle,’ or, ‘I can see right up a donkey’s arse and through to the other side’.

And, yet the pacing was often too slow and so the great lines and jokes were sometimes lost in the delivery.

A little tighter direction, a little less pausing between dialogue and a little less exposition is what was needed.

Moulin Rouge cast

■ Global Creatures have announced the Australian cast for their Tony-nominated production, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which opens at Melbourne's Regent Theatre on August 13. Alinta Chidzey from Chicago will star as the sparkling diamond, Satine, opposite newcomer Des Flanagan as Bohemian dreamer Christian.

Simon Burke will play legendary club impresario Harold Zidler and Andrew Cook is cast as The Duke.

Market opens for Sangster Stakes ■ Leading bookmaker's, Neds, have opened a market on the Sangster Classic to be run at Morphettville on May 1, before nominations.

They have the outstanding filly, Instant Celebrity, on top of proceedings at around $ 7.

At one stage the daughter of Not A Single Doubt, had won four on end, winning back on September 26, last year over 1400 metres.

Prepared by leading trainer, Philip Stokes, who has stables here and in South Australia, is confident that she can handle any race that she participates in.

After six starts she has banked over $ 362,000 in stake earnings.

It is a big task for a three-year old filly to take on the might of some of the older runners.

On the second line, is the smart mare, Libertini, prepared by James Cummings out of his Randwick stables.

She competed against the class in the T.J.Smith Classic at Randwick over 1200 metres, but the others were too strong, with the likes of Nature Strip, Masked Crusader, Eduardo, Bivouac and Zoutori.

Before the T.J.Smith Stakes, she finished a good third behind Masked Crusader in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley back on March 19..

This distance of 1200 metres will suit her, and she always puts in.

Equal second choice in the betting is another of the James Cummings team, Savatiano, the six-year-old mare, who won the Canterbury Stakes in good fashion on March 6.

In the Canterbury Stakes she beat Mizzy and Masked Crusader, by 2.5 lengths.

Savatiano, has won 13 of her 38 starts, with 12 placings and is consistently in the money.

You can't leave her out.

Next in the early markets, is the smart Victorian youngster Swat's That.

The three-year-old filly has only had the eight starts for three wins, two seconds and a third, missing a place for the second time in the Newmarket Stakes at Flemington on March 6.

It was a big ask for the Shamus Award filly, who has a load of talent, and if she goes around in the Sangster, will get in with a good weight.

On the next rung is the James Cummings mare, Flit, who has won over a million and a half, doesn't win out of turn, and last won on October 10 last year.

She wasn't a chance in the Newmarket in a crackerjack field.

The Ciaron Maher-David Eustace trained Away Game who was competing for the 12th time in the Surround Stakes, failed to flatter at big odds, and finished well back behind Forbidden Love.

An interesting runner is another of the Ciaron Maher-David Eustace team in Muntaseera, by top sire, I am Invincible.

She was most impressive in inning the Redelva Stakes at Morphettiville.

From her 14 starts, she won four of them, with five minors placings.

The stable has a big opinion of her, and on her day, like most of these, if she does start could be right in it.

One that will be right in it is the Tony and

Plate over 1100 metres at Caulfield found the opposition a bit strong in the Newmarket.

Of the others, Lyre, from the Freedman She's made to end with the win, and her class stable, always gives of her best and was a good will carry her a long way in this. second to Sisstar in the Bel Espirit Stakes.

Victorian demolition at SA trots ■ Saturday April 17 was South Australia’s biggest night of the year harness racing wise featuring the $60,000 (Group 2) TAB South Australian Pacing Cup over 2645 metres supplemented by the (Group 3) $30,000 SA Botra 2230 metres and the $30,000 (Group 2) TAB South Australian Trotters Cup over 2645 metres at Globe Derby Park headquarters Boliver and the Victorians reigned supreme winning all three races during the evening.

It was no shock to see Melton co-trainers Anthony Butt and Sonya Smith snare the cup with Kiwi bred 4Y0 SomebeachsomewhereGlenburn Jewel gelding Boots Electric at odds of $3.40.

Trapped four wide from gate six, Boots Electric once balanced showed a great turn of speed to cross Joes A Character (gate two) in the back straight on the first occasion with Shadow Sax also going forward from the extreme draw to race outside him.

Three wide at bell

■ With no changes through the middle section, Perfect Stride (one/three) a stablemate of the winner and $3.30 favourite commenced a forward move three wide at the bell being accommodated by Bettorhavetime ahead of him easing out to give chase with the most consistent Majestic Cruiser (one/four) following the pair after trailing from the outset.

Going forward four wide in the back straight, Perfect Stride (Zac Phillips) looked a real danger, however Boots Electric was too sharp and safely held a margin to the wire, scoring by 7.8 metres, with Majestic Man ($10.70) and Darby McGuigan a head away in third place after not letting the runner up out of his sight. Another Victorian Bulletproof Boy came from the tail for fourth 12.6 metres back.

In quarters of 28.3, 29.5, 28.8 and 28.4 after a lead time of 77.6 seconds, Boots Electric returned a mile rate of 1-57.2.

Driven by Kerryn Manning, Aladdin led easily from gate two and after dictating terms to suit, raced clear on turning to score by 6.1 metres over a game Bondi Lockdown which raced exposed from outside the front line, with Apieceoflou, a stablemate of the winner third 1.4 metres away after racing three wide from mid-field at the bell.

Owned in Adelaide by AB&T Cormack Racing Pty Ltd, Aladdin recorded a mile rate of 157.5.

■ The Trotters Cup was an exciting race taken out by the Ray Harvey (Stawell) part-owned and trained in-form 5Y0 Danny Bouchea-Chilly Pepperell gelding A Penny Drops in a rate of 203.3.

Given a sweet trip one/one by local reinsman Mark Billinger after starting from barrier two on the second line as the undefeated in Australia Justamollyarcher led from barrier four with Travel Bug after a slow start from barrier five going forward to face the breeze.

Asked to run prior to the final bend, The Penny Drops after easing three wide raced to the lead on the home turn, greeting the judge by an easy 19.7 metres in advance of a flying Stress Factor (three back the markers) which looked like dropping out after easing to follow the winner in the back straight on the final occasion before getting his second wind. Having his first outing since February last year when unplaced in the Ararat Cup after suffering severe interference, General Dodge driven by Jason Lee led with ease from gate four as the mobile gate pulled away before allowing Reactor Now outside him to stride clear within a lap.

After receiving a cosy passage all through the event, General Dodge used the sprint lane on turning to put the race away in a couple of strides, scoring by 8.7 metres untouched from Boncel Benjamin (four wide home turn) from last, with Pacifico Dream (three back the markers) third a neck away after also using the sprint lane.

Raced by Michael and good mate Jason Fenech along with Jarrod Lorensini and brothers Rodney and Danny Heir, General Dodge in a last half mile of 55.8 (quarter 27.4) returned a mile rate of 1-57.2.

Computer glitch

Driven to perfection by Greg Sugars who was able to move away from an inside second line draw shortly after the start to settle mid-field in the running line after Major Meister retained the lead from the pole resisting a challenge from stablemates Assassinator (gate two) and Bulletproof Boy (gate five).

Heat winner Silent Major (gate three) after lobbing one/one for Aaron Dunn was first to make a move within half a lap to go forward and take the lead away from Major Meister with the well supported second elect Like A Wildfire (gate two on the second line) following him forward to park in the open but for only a few strides as Sugars and Mach Dan were off and running to settle outside Silent Major with two laps to travel.

After a cosy middle lap, Somewhere Secret another of the Stewart stable team went forward from three back racing for the bell only to be trapped wide for the remainder of the journey with Malcolms Rhythm latching to his back from the rear.

Hard driven approaching the final bend, Mach Dan responded to join the leader Silent Major in style on turning as the pair went head and head to the wire with Mach Dan prevailing by a head in a thrilling finale to the race. Like A Wildfire was 5.1 metres away in third place 2.1 metres in advance of Malcolms Rhythm.

In quarters of 31.5, 30.5, 27.8 and 28.9 after a lead time of 74.7 seconds, Mach Dan recorded a mile rate of 1-59.7 well outside Im The Boss’ 1-57.1 set in 2018.

The other attraction on the night was the $14,000 Tankard Dental Mildura Guineas over

2190 metres which was taken out by former New Zealander Aladdin which had only been in the country for a short time and having his first outing in Oz. Trained at Charlton by Greg Norman, Aladdin a gelded son of Sweet Lou and Pacing Delight driven by Kerryn Manning was trapped five wide from outside the front line before hitting top speed and stride clear entering the front straight on the first occasion.

Bowling along at his leisure, Aladdin blitzed his rivals to win in a breeze by 12.2 metres over Major Angel (gate two) which trailed after leading out, with Stylish Joe (one/one) third 14 metres away. The mile rate 1-58.4.

Borderline event

■ Cobram on the Murray commenced the week on Monday April 19 with a neat program and astute Long Forest duo Andy and Kate Gath produced another ex-Kiwi in 4Y0 Majestic SonPhiladelphia gelding Isaac H to produce an outstanding performance to land the Hygain Trotters Mobile over 2170 metres.

Refusing to score up, Issac H (gate three) first up in Oz missed the start by a big margin looking hopeless by the time he settled.

With the roughie Christmas Babe beginning swiftly for Shannon O’Sullivan to lead from gate six. Issac H gradually made ground tacking on to the back of Dash Of Flair which galloped at the bell before going forward three wide.

Easing four wide in the final circuit, Issac H showed a brilliant turn of speed to join the leader on straightening and ran to the wire strongly to gain the day by 4.5 metres from Mystic Chip which trailed the leader easing off her back on turning, with Christmas Babe holding down third a neck away. The mile rate 2-02.5.

■ Kaarimba trainer Bryan (Johnno) Johnstone’s 4Y0 Bitobliss-Meandmyshadow gelding Justcallmeaza looks to have a future after taking the Cobram Hotel Pace over 1670 metres.

Raced by Johnno in partnership with wife Lorraine and step daughter Sharyn Britten who bred the horse, Justcallmeaza with Leigh Sutton in the sulky led throughout from gate five and never looked like being beaten, scoring by 4.5 metres in a rate of 2-00.7 over Allvictory Hanover which raced outside him to give the Goulburn Valley the quinella. Fiesty Phoebe (three back the markers) was third 4.6 metres away.

■ Wahring trainer Rosie Weidenbach combined with daughter Olivia aboard 7Y0 Christian Cullen-PK Bunny entire Goodlookin Rooster to snare the 1670 metre Demaria Mitsubishi Pace.

Despite racing uncovered throughout after going forward from outside the front line, Goodlookin Rooster was too strong at the finish, defeating Argy Bargy (one/three – three wide last lap) by 3.3 metres, with Amber Alert using the sprint lane off the back of the weakening leader Ziegfeld third 1.1 metres away. The mile rate 1-56.7.

Ararat cold

■ At a cold Ararat on Tuesday, Armstrong partowner/trainer Leroy O’Brien joined forces with Kerryn Manning to land the Ararat Advocate 3Y0 Maiden Pace over 2195 metres with Tell A Tall Story, a Captaintreacherous-Nosotros gelding who was making his third race appearance and second since May 2020.

Showing speed to lead from gate four, Tell A Tall Story blitzed his rivals to win in a breeze 19 metres in advance of Sheluvsit (three back the markers) and Bye Line who was a neck away after racing exposed. The mile rate two minutes even.

■ Terang’s Matthew Horsnell was successful with speedy 6Y0 Always A Virgin-Madazhell gelding Madazalways in the 2195 metre Ararat HRC Supports Kicking Cancer To The Curb Claiming Pace.

With Glen Craven in the sulky, Madazalways pounced on the lead from gate three and never looked in danger, greeting the judge by 7.7 metres in 2-01.6 from ex-Queenslander Smithstar Lexus (one/one) and Wochawaitingfor which trailed the winner finishing 5.1 metres off the runner up.

Handicap was the highlight of the night, going to one time HRV Board Member Geoff Senior’s 6Y0 Straphanger-Milly McCool gelding Icicle.

Driven by local Michael Bellman, Icicle began safely from 20 metres to possie mid-field in the running line as old timer Jaden Gill flew the start from gate five to lead.

After a cosy trip, Icicle went forward three wide in the final circuit to pounce on the leaders at the straight entrance and record a strong six metre margin from Down Under Earl which followed him all of the way. Jaden Gill held down third a neck back. The mile rate 2-05.8.

Two meetings

■ Two meetings were held on Wednesday – Yarra Valley in the afternoon and Mildura at night.

Champion ex-Kiwi trainer Tim Butt who has recently re-located to Victoria after a stint in NSW, landed a Yarra Valley double on the day – four year old Hes Watching-Jaz Tanner gelding Calf Pen taking the Yarra Valley Toyota Maiden Pace over 1650 metres and Rock N Roll Heaven-Lettucereason colt Swayzee the Yarra Valley Party Hire 3Y0 Pace over the same distance, both driven by son Riley. Calf Pen began safely from gate four only to go off stride on the first turn when tackling Icanmotor for the lead resulting in him being rapped three wide for most of the final circuit.

Dropping into the one/one for a short breather in the back straight, Calf Pen was off and running again approaching the home turn, giving his rivals wind burn as he raced away to score by 24.4 metres from Icanmotor in a mile rate of 1-56.4.

■ Ronzel Sonny showed a win isn’t too far away by running on nicely from well back for third 1.3 metres back, while Swayzee was most impressive in his race.

Starting solo on the second line, Swayzee settled mid-field in the moving line as Drain The Swamp was driven forward to take the lead away from Euroking at the bell.

Racing three wide for the final circuit was no worry for Swayzee as he outstayed his rivals to win narrowly but well by a head from Drain The Swamp, with Terror Of Locksley third 6.2 metres back after trailing the winner home. The mile rate 1-55.7.

It was great to see part-owner/driver Shane Hoban in the winners stall following a number of years off the scene when guiding 4Y0 Betterthancheddar-Black And Yellow gelding Mister Macedon to victory for brother Gary in the De Bortoli Pace over 2150 metres. Beginning very fast from outside the front row Mister Macedon was unable to head off Gozo Sunshine inside him as the pair cleared the rest of the field with Mister Macedon able to angle to the back of the leader.

Given an easy time, Mister Macedon came away from the markers on the final bend and finished best to prevail by 3.3 metres over Tryna Portray (one/one), with Bronski Moment (four back the markers) third 1.4 metres away. The mile rate 1-59.3. Gary Hoban is doing it tough at present with a serious illness.

Second appearance

■ Locksley owner/trainer John Nissen’s Love You-Elusive Charm gelding Locksley Lover was an easy victor of the Yarra Glen IGA 3Y0 Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres when making his second race appearance.
