“Yet despite these claims we know many Victorian businesses are in trouble, and this morning we learned that the number of business collapses had doubled in February in Victoria.

“Why? Because the Government has totally failed to deliver on their promises.

“Angela, the proprietor of a Mornington retail outlet, applied for business support in September.

“The website clearly indicated that $10,000 was available for businesses in metropolitan Melbourne and

Mitchell shire and $5000 for regional businesses. On October 1 the business received $5000.

“Upon making inquiries, Angela was told that Mornington was not in the metropolitan area.

“The department claimed the program had told her that was the case and she was only eligible for the smaller payment.

“It is a pity the program was not managing the lockdown.

“Eventually in mid-October the department conceded that Mornington was part of metropolitan Melbourne and indicated they would hear back in a few days.

Local plastics ban ● From Page One

Government promises not kept “After the involvement of my office, the Mornington Peninsula shire, the Mornington Chamber of Commerce and even the Victorian Ombudsman, and thanks to Angela’s tenacity, things started to move, but it was only during the last sitting week in February, more than 4½ months after the application, that the final $5000 was received,” Mr Morris told the Legislative Assembly.

“Clearly the Government has no conception of the financial pressures faced by small business.

“This delay could have been terminal for that business.

“No thanks to the Government it was not, but how many more businesses face closure because the Government just does not get it?” Mr Morris stated.

■ Nepean MLA Chris Brayne spoke in State Parliament about how a ban on plastics will affect the southern part of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port.

“The action I seek is for the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change to provide an update to my community on the ban of single-use plastics and how this affects my community of Nepean,” Mr Brayne said.

“The southern peninsula and Western Port communities are surrounded by pristine beaches and coastlines, and the townships that make up these areas will undoubtedly benefit from the Andrews Government’s decision made last week.

“I have already been contacted by many local residents, environment groups and folks who pick up rubbish in their spare time all the time telling me how this decision will reduce marine and land-based pollution, reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and reduce emissions.

“I look forward to updating my community on the minister’s response and to letting them know the benefits we will reap from this decision. and category,” Mr Brayne told the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (Mar. 2).

The Environment Protection Authority’s approval to dump contaminated soil is sure to get a run, including a burst from Upper House Liberal, Bernie Finn. Women’s Day

■ Yesterday (Tues.) was International Women’s Day. Louise Staley (Ripon) summed it up this way in State Parliament last Wednesday (Mar. 3): “The theme of this year is ‘Choose to Challenge’. Today I stand in the Victorian Parliament as a woman elected to this place, and I challenge the false narrative that women are simply the sum of our body parts.

“Women are not people with periods or vulva owners, women are adult human females. We make up over half the Australian population.

“As Baroness Claire Fox said in the British House of Lords recently: ‘Our laws and words must never treat people as non-human things.’

“She went on to say: ‘I am not a uterus holder, nor a person with a vagina nor a chestfeeder. These are linguistic abominations …“Ms Shing of the other place is reported as supporting the erasure of women as whole personas and the erasure of the female-only role women can have as mothers.

“I reject this. Ms Shing supports changing the language to make breastfeeding ‘chest feeding’ and pregnancy ‘pregnant people’.

Women have far to go to achieve equality in all spheres, including, as we have seen in recent weeks, women’s rights to safety and freedom from violence and rape. We should not have to fight about our identity as women.”

In the historic sitting of the Victorian Parliament at the Royal Exhibition Buildings in a moving speech the Premier of Victoria spoke about a local girl named Madeline, an intelligent and articulate young woman who we had the privilege of meeting at Essendon Keilor College in 2014.

“To quote the Premier: ‘… Madeline was a bright and shining star … who deserved a bright and shining future.’ Through different hospital and community services, her journey represented the fractured approach that just has not kept the most vulnerable Victorians safe, including Madeline. Madeline’s family wants our Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System to mark a turning point in mental health care in Victoria, and by accepting all 65 recommendations we are going to make a dramatic difference in getting those with mental health challenges the support they need when they need it.”

Frankston pervert Simon Kelly, 56, has been jailed after masturbatingf while blowing kisses at his neighbours and pointing at his penis. Journalist Jon Andrews of the Herald Sun reports that he also flashed two young children as they rode their bikes. Kelly is reported to have blamed ‘ice’ abuse after suffering PTSD after working as a security consultant in war-torn countries.”Kelly pleaded guilty to four sexual activity-related and bail breach charges at the online Frankston Magistrates’ Court on Thursday,” said the Herald Sun. Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge jailed Kelly for a total of 19 months with a non-parole period of 13 months.

Greater Dandenong Council is trialling the placement of a select number of articles from its news publication ontoits website to allow for information to be shared in multiple languages. Greater Dandenong is the most culturally diverse community in Australia. Residents come from 157 different birth places and speak more than 200 languages. The website includes a Google translation function, which with the press of a button can change the language across all pages of the website.

Languages include Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Germen, Hebrew, Khmer, Urdu and Vietnamese.

AFL star talks gender stereotypes ■ AFL footballer Josh Kennedy will talk to Mornington Peninsula residents about the pressures young men face living up to outdated rules of manhood as part of a webinar on Wednesday, March 24.

The free webinar hosted by Mornington Peninsula Shire will explore the high rates of anxiety and depression experienced by men and boys in the community and the benefits of supporting young boys to question gender stereotypes.

New research shows how outdated ideas of being ‘a real man’ not only lead to increased aggressive and controlling behaviour towards others, but also contributes to reduced physical and mental health for men and boys themselves.

According to Victorian Population Health Survey 2017, nearly 20 per cent of men on the Mornington Peninsula have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression.

The Man Box Study conducted by The Men’s Project Jesuit Social Services highlights the pressures young men still feel to act tough, be self-sufficient and live up to rigid gender roles despite most men not agreeing with this outdated view of manhood.

Local Briefs Dandenong hit-run

■ Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 33-year-old man following an alleged hit-run collision in Dandenong on Thursday afternoon (Mar. 4).

The Hallam man was charged with fail to stop at the scene of a crash, fail to render assistance and prohibited person possess imitation pistol.

He was bailed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

The charges relate to a collision on Clow St where a SUV towing a covered box trailer allegedly struck a pedestrian and left the scene about 2.15pm.

The victim, a 24-year-old Dandenong man, remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

■ Kashyap Shingari has been fined $50,000 for dumping concrete at various locations. The clean-up bill for Mornington Peninsula Council is reported to have been $9295. The damage at Casey Council was $1610.

Complaints also came from Frankston and Greater Dandenong Councils.

Mr Shingari was told by Magistrate Richard Pithouse that he should be jailed, and would have been if there was power in the legislation. The Court action was brought by the Environment Protection Authority.

Boneo bus smash ■ The driver of the 4WD performed a legal U-turn and failed to give way to the oncoming school mini bus on Browns Rd near the Jetty Rd intersection.

An ambulance crew attended and assessed eight people. None were taken to hospital.

Miffy at Bunjil Place ■ Bunjil Place Gallery is welcoming iconic design exhibition Miffy and Friends, featuring the work of Dutch illustrator, Dick Bruna (19272017) to Melbourne on March 27 – June 11.

Captivating children and adults alike for more than 65 years, the iconic figure of Miffy features in a major, free exhibition coming to Melbourne for the first time, following the exhibition’s stellar launch at Brisbane’s QUT Art Museum late last year.

Commissioned artists include Stephen Bird, Sadie Chandler, Nadia Hernandez, Carla McRae, Nell, Brian Robinson and Vipoo Srivilasa.

Miffy was first created by Bruna as a bedtime story for his son in 1955. The little white bunny, or ‘nijntje’ as she is known in Dutch, has evolved from her life as a children’s book character into a globally-recognised and universally loved design icon.

Exhibition curator Vanessa Van Ooyen comments that Miffy and Friends is a celebration of people coming together to share in the joys of art: “Miffy perfectly captures the Dutch concept of gezelligheid, which isn’t a word easily translated into English but is about a feeling, of coming together with loved ones.

■ Melbourne Food and Wine Festival’s largest free, family-friendly event has returned. Dandenong Market will celebrate world street food and culture from 10am to 4pm on Sunday March 28 at the ninth Dandenong World Fare.

Dandenong World Fare will be an outside only event, which will follow a strict COVIDSafe plan including a designated seated area for visitors, increased cleaning, hand sanitising stations, and adherence to physical distancing requirements.

Boost for Frankston ■ Time-honoured clubs including Williamstown, Coburg and Port Melbourne, will be supported to forge a new future in a tristate VFL competition, with details of near $1 million funding from the State Government revealed last week.

Standalone VFL clubs – also including Frankston, Northern Bullants and Werribee – will be eligible for travel and operations grants of up to $130,000 in 2021 as the VFL expands to take in six teams from New South Wales and Queensland.

AFL-aligned VFL clubs Sandringham (St Kilda), Box Hill Hawks (Hawthorn) and Casey Demons (Melbourne) will be eligible for grants of up to $65,000.

The $975,000 investment in the future of Australian football in the statewas part of the Victorian Budget 2020-21 and provides grants to defray the costs of interstate travel and providing a COVIDSafe environment for players, officials and supporters.

The finances of VFL clubs were significantly impacted by the cancellation of the 2020 season due to the effects of the pandemic and the 2021 direct budget boost will be important as the clubs look to make their mark in the new 22team competition, which kicks off on April 17.

Death at Emerald ■ A man has been charged following a fatal crash in Emerald on Saturday morning (Mar. 6).

Investigators believe a motorcyclist was travelling west on the Belgrave Gembrook Rd when he collided into a vehicle turning into Olgivie Rd about 9.45am.

The rider, a 45-year-old man from Cockatoo, died at the scene.

The driver, a 37-year-old Narre Warren man, stopped at the scene and has been spoken to by police.

He has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 12.

Trust tonight ■ The Mornington Peninsula Cemetery Trust is due to meet tonight (Wed., Mar. 10) at the Municipal Offices in Rosebud.

Trust members are Crs Antonella Celi, Lisa Dixon and Despi O’Connor.

They are due to hear about the intention to include the Trust as an affiliate to the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Climate Action Carbon Neutral Certification application.

The Trust will hear about three quotes from local landscape designers, in relation to the installation of the memorial shelter and the development of a memorial garden at the Dromana cemetery using a $50,000 bequest that was left to the cemetery by the estate of the late Mrs Beverley Pedley.

World-first at Mordialloc ■ In a woirld first, noise walls along the Mordialloc Freeway will be made from 75 per cent recycled plastic collected from households across the state, as part of a drive to build Australia’s greenest freeway.

The 32,000 square metres of noise walls required for the project will be made from more than 570 tonnes of plastic waste – half of which is plastic disposed in kerbside recycling such as milk and soft drink bottles.

The other half of the recycled content will be made up of soft plastics such as bread bags, food wrappers and bubble wrap, which are notoriously difficult to recycle and usually end up in landfill.

The noise walls have been made in Carrum Downs by PACT Group, helping them retain local jobs. ““With more than 900,000 hours of work now recorded, the Mordialloc Freeway is supporting local jobs, will take trucks off local roads and slash travel times,” said Jacinta Alloan, Transport Infrastructure Minister.

The recycled plastic noise wall panels are quicker and safer to install.

The Mordialloc Freeway is due to be complete by the end of 2021.

■ Mornington Peninsula teacher Locksley Christy, 25, of Capel Sound, is accused of involving a child in the production of abuse material has been charged with a series of sex offences.

The charges include grooming a child under 16 for sexual conduct, involving a child in the production of child abuse material, and using a carriage service to transmit indecent communication to a child under 16.

Sound Art at McClelland ■ McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery will stage a performance of site-specific sound-based artworks by four emerging female artists titled Unheard Relations and curated

by Melbourne sound art organisation, Liquid Architecture.

The series of dynamic performances in the pavilion and grounds from 2pm-4pm on Saturday, March 20, will feature works by Amy Hanley, Thembi Soddell, Tina Stefanou, and Xen Nhà.

McClelland curator Simon Lawrie says the brief to Liquid Architecture was to nurture works which explore specific social, cultural and historical aspects of sound.

“Visitors to the presentations at McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery can experience immersive sound-based art and sonic practices which respond to intimate experiences of place,” Mr Lawrie said.

■ The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s Planning Services Committee was due to meet last night (Tues.) at the Peninsula Community Theatre, Mornington, as this edition of The Local Paper went to press.

The agenda includes discussion on the Crib Point Township Plan refresh, with the intention to adopt a final version.

A proposal appears for the Alexandra Park Pavilion redevelopment in Main St, Mornington, to be referred to an independent planning panel.

Portsea winery

■ Palnner Briar Thomas has submitted a proposal to this week’s Mornington Peninsula Council meeting about plans to establish a winery at 183 Hotham Rd, Portsea.

The winery proposal seeks a permit for use of the land for the sale and consumption of liquor, develop buildings and works , erect and display signage, vegetation removal, and associated works generally in accordance with the submitted plans.

Drug action on Peninsula

■ Community organisations on the Mornington Peninsula are being invited to form a partnership to tackle drugs and alcohol, with funding from the Federal Government.

Greg Hunt, Flinders MHR, said applications were now open for registration of new Local Drug Action Teams to prevent and minimise harm from ice, alcohol and other drugs.

“Alcohol and other drugs, including ice or crystal methamphetamine, are issues for communities, not just for individuals,” Mr Hunt said.

“Community action is effective because many of the factors influencing drug-related harm can only be targeted at the community level, like social connections, education and a sense of belonging.”

This recruitment round aims to approve 40 new LDATs, which can apply for $10,000 in initial funding to support prevention and health promotion activities, with further funding available.

Mr Hunt said the program was an important prevention initiative, targeting a broad range of alcohol and drug related issues that are relevant in their communities.

The Government has provided $6 million to implement a range of activities.including enhanced online and telephone drug and alcohol information and treatment support services.

Million dollar Mayor ■ There was a cost of more than $1 million with notices of motion put between 2016-20 by current City of Frankston Mayor, Cr Kris Bolam, a report to Councillors states.

The estimated costs of notices of motions put by Cr Bolam over the four-year term aggregated $1,068,500.

● Anna George ■ The problem of gender equality in life and work is a hot topic right now, and Anna George's new novel Tipping tackles it with her customary wit.

Scary Goats Tour ■ Scary Goats Tour, a new Australian horrorcomedy play written by Chloe Towan and Nathan Fernandez is being presented from March 22-April 4 at The Butterfly Club, Melbourne.

When Mel, a famous sceptic and ghost debunker, finds she has accidentally booked in for a goat tour instead of the ghost tour she wanted, it looks like her day couldn’t get any worse.

However, when Billy, an evil ghost goat, is summoned and attacks the group it is up to Mel to combine her knowledge of the supernatural with the facts she has learned about goats to save the day.

The first work of actor/paranormal enthusiasts Chloe Towan and Nathan Fernandez, Scary Goats Tour draws inspiration from the silliness of Monty Python, the absurdity of the Mighty Boosh and the scares of classic horror films of the 70s and 80s to create a show that is part horror, part comedy and part fun goat lecture.

Travelling Wilburys

■ The irony of the Travelling Wilburys Sessions performance is that each member of the group has a musical pedigree that could be considered just as iconic within the Australian musical scene as those of the band to which they pay tribute. Sam See (Sherbert), James Black (Mondo Rock), Lindsay Field and Angus Burchall (John Farnham Band), Glyn Mason (Ariel) and Paul Cartwright (BTF) are all

recognised artists in the Australian industry and the bracketed associations are by no means definitive.

That wealth of experience is evident in their musicianship; the harmonies, the timing and versatility. They play well together. And when they revel in a piece as they did with Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind, their delight in the transitions and musical repartee is evident. And this, then, is the challenge for a tribute band – to make things their own.

The Dylan song was not actually a Wilburys’ number. It has, however, become universal meaning musicians have licence to interpret it to showcase their ability. Tribute bands are constrained by the expectation still contained within a song’s genesis; how we imagine Orbison’s top note, Dylan’s monotone or Harrison’s lyricism. One needs to be a little more disrespectful of the original to transport an audience – but would this defeat the purpose of a tribute?

There’s an opportunity here for a retrospective of Australian music showcasing the numbers with which these musicians were intimately involved. They own those numbers. They could let their musical identities truly sing.

Having said that, this group, undaunted by the constraints of COVID-19 which saw their opening Melbourne gig cancelled, identify with the Wilburys and provide a little background as to the formation and success of those performers. The Wilburys themselves never performed live which means we recollect them more for their acoustic integration rather than the amplification required when on stage which makes for another point of difference. https://wilburysessions.com.au/ - Review by David McLean

Scott Hili and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

■ CPAC Musical Theatre celebrates 20 years of entertaining the community, with Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical marking the first show in this celebrative year, opening on April 24 at the Cardinia Cultural Centre.

The show's Creative Director and Producer, Scott Hili, has been treading the boards for over 30 years. With a long list of shows and stage hours under his belt in both professional and community theatre, Scott's works as a theatre maker include the Midsumma Festival cabarets Twinky and the Bear and The MusketQueers. His current work is a non-replica production of Stephen Elliot’s Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical in which he also plays Bernadette.

Inspired by the movie The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, about two drag queens and a transsexual woman on a road trip travelling across the desert from Sydney to the Alice, Hili entered a Drag competition titled Search for Cinderella at 3Faces nightclub in 1994. Each week someone would lip sync battle it out for the title, a concept now popularised by Emmy winning Ru Paul Charles. After four rounds and battling it out in the semifinals, Hili, whose Drag persona was Tess Tickle, won the competition and a trip to Queensland. However the lure of dress-ups went beyond Drag towards the musical theatre stage and has seen Hili play a variety of roles over the years.

Hili has come full circle from a movie inspiring him to do Drag, to producing and starring in this new stage version of Priscilla Queen of the Desert as part of Midsumma Festival 2021. Hili says he continues to address LGBTQIAP+ concerns in Australian society, using the arts to educate on these values in this Victorian amateur premiere of Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical.

What’s On The Songs Of A Sentimental Bloke

■ With the title The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke I did expect Eltham Little Theatre’s first production of the season to have music and songs.

I now know ‘songs’ mean spoken verse.

This show is a series of 14 poems one leading on to the next describing the ‘sentiments’ of Bill as he sees, courts and marries Doreen.

It did not even start as a play, but a ‘verse novel’ written by C.J. Dennis that the company transformed into a script.

Once I realised this show was going to be spoken I put away my tapping feet and sat back to listen to the thoughts of a young Australian ‘Bloke’ with his intimate thoughts of romance.

Brad Buckingham is a man of talent, he not only directed the play, he ‘played’ many ensemble roles with humour, conviction and precise timing.

Both Tim Camilleri and Don Nicholson had the daunting task of sharing the narrator/ Bill roles. Both did well in portraying the love sick Bill.

As the verses went along it became easier to watch as the actors seamlessly switched roles.

They dressed the same, and moved in and out of ‘frame’ swiftly. I do think however whilst having just one actor recite so many lines would have been a challenge there were too many transfers, perhaps it could have been ‘song’ by ‘song’ , yet it was an interesting way to present this piece.

Another decision by the director was to have the show in the round. For future performances in this style the actors need to project more to be heard when facing away, particularly in the beginning when the audience is trying to get used to the old language and the doubling up of actors.

The ensemble was a well rehearsed cast of eight playing many roles to visualise the words of Bill.

As my first step into theatre since early 2020 it was great to sit back and take in some Aussie history; I did not know our language had changed so much.

Imagine in 2021 being able to call a lady a ‘tart’ or ‘a piece of fluff’. A show I think would really appeal to linguists and the older population. An interesting find Eltham Little Theatre, thanks for the opportunity.

■ Heidi Victoria is an Australian politician. She was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, representing Bayswater for the Liberal Party from 2006 to 2018.

Heidi also lived in West Hollywood near John-Michael Howson in Kings Road and near where I lived for 12 years in Alfred Street, West Hollywood, walking distance to Alan Johnson at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites 8585 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood.

Heidi and Alan met up at the Entertainment Industries Marquee Club luncheon at the Emerald Hotel in South Melbourne last week to view Heidi's new coffee table book.

The Show Must Go On; What the Performing Arts were doing when they weren't doing what we know they do is the celebration of an industry whose people are as resilient as they are creative, and there are so many silver linings.

Beside each carefully crafted environmental portrait that she took during lockdown, the subject of the portrait (there are 72 Performing Arts professionals included) has written what they were thinking/feeling during lockdown.

"As I photographed each person for this book, I learned more about the industry and what makes it so unique. The people who work within the Performing Arts industry are resilient by nature and many of them have re-invented themselves and their income streams, passing time until the magic is allowed to happen again," Heidi said.

Bumble goes public ■ Today, 40 per cent of US couples meet online. To contextualise how significant that is, in 2020, some 150 million messages were sent through the dating app Bumble every day.

Now, those corny opening lines are about to make Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble's founder and former co-founder of Tinder, a billionaire with a 19 per cent stake in the company: The start-up is prepping for a $6 billion IPO. Bumble was founded in 2014 after Herd left Tinder. She launched Bumble as an antidote to antiquated dating norms like men needing to reach out first and online harassment. On the app, women have 24 hours to make the first move with matches.

Bumble has 42 million monthly users across 150+ countries, with 80 per cent of new users coming from word-ofmouth.

The online dating market grows 11 per centannually.

Users are converting to premium products, with sales hitting $417 million through the first nine months of 2020, up 15 per cent.

■ More children have been absent from school this academic year than a year earlier, with attendance declining as the pandemic wears on, new research and data show. Students attending school in person as well as those learning remotely are struggling with poor attendance, though it is worse among the millions of homebound students who are still learning primarily through a screen. Districts showed a 2.3 per centdecline in average daily attendance nationally from September to November of last year, compared with the same period in 2019, according to data from PowerSchool, which tracks grades and attendance for schools. Attendance fell in 75 pe rcent of the districts as the year wore on, dropping by 1.5 per cent on average each month, data show. The data covers 2700 districts that include more than 2.5 million students learning in person and online.

Spike in liver disease

■ Hospitals are reporting huge spikes in liver disease as a result of people drinking more during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a recent report.

There are no national figures available on admission for alcoholic liver disease but the numbers coming out of individual hospitals look very worrying.

For example, Keck Hospital of the University of Southern California, has recorded a 30 per cent increase from 2019, according to the report, and specialists at hospitals affiliated with the University of Michigan, North Western University, Harvard University and Mount Sinai Health System in New York City told the Times that admissions have leapt 50 percent since March, when the pandemic took hold. Haripriya Maddur, a hepatologist at North Western Medicine, said adults under 40 seem to be being hit particularly hard by a feeling of hopelessness during the pandemic.

"They have mouths to feed and bills to pay, but no job," she said, "So they turn to booze as the last coping mechanism remaining."

■ Americans purchased more than two million firearms last month, an 80 per cent increase from a year earlier, according to analysis. It's the third-highest monthly total on record. To understand why, let's look at the differences between January 2020 and January 2021.

In January 2020 we went to concerts, restaurants, and bars.

In January 2021 a pandemic raged and people needed to find outdoor leisure activities, such as shooting sports. The CEO of Minnesota-based Vista Outdoor told Bloomberg the "primary driver" of higher gun sales is COVID-19.

In January 2020 Donald Trump was president.

In January 2021 Joe Biden took charge, but only after a violent mob attacked the US Capitol Building on Jan. 6. Gun sales tend to rise when a Democrat is elected president like in 2008 and 2012 with Obama, and they definitely tend to rise when people are scared for their safety and crave protection.

Some interesting stats to-go: First-time buyers accounted for about 40 per cent of all guns purchased in 2020, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation. And 40 per cent of total purchases were made by women.

■ The Catholic Church may have been the single biggest beneficiary of the U.S. Pay Check Protection Program during the COVID-19 crisis, raking in a reported $3 billion in taxpayerfunded business relief. The staggering figure comes from an analysis of the payouts, from the Associated Press, which states that $3 billion has been dished out to the nation's dioceses and other Catholic institutions.

■ Whenever people want to make fun of a stodgy old corporation that couldn't see the future, they love referencing the camera maker Kodak. But Kodak wasn't the only old dog taken out by the digital camera revolution: All camera companies have now fallen to the iPhone. Last year, only 9m cameras were sold, down from 122m in 2010, per tech journalist and Gigamon founder, Om Malik.

Meanwhile, Apple moved 200million+ iPhones in 2020 While there are countless other camera enabled smartphones, the iPhone which has sold 1Billion+ units since launching in 2007 clearly leads the pack.

Here's how Malik thinks digital cameras will shake out moving forward: Big players: At 10million units per year, the 4 big digital camera makers Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sony will be fighting over scraps. Sony is best positioned to thrive, but not as a camera maker: It supplies camera sensors to everyone, including Apple.

Niche players: Super high-end cameras Leica, Hasselblad, Phase One will maintain share with pros and super-hobbyists.

As for Kodak, the company was last in the news for potential insider trading when the Trump administration awarded it $765m to make COVID-related pharmaceuticals.

Magazine ■ Gladys Moncrieff was one of the most popular Australian musical comedy stars of the 20th century. For 40 years Gladys performed in musicals in Australia and overseas. She was known as Australia's ‘Queen of Song’ and fondly referred to as ‘Our Glad’.

Gladys Moncrieff was born in Bundaberg, Queensland in 1892.

Her mother was a professional singer and her father was a piano tuner. At the age of six Gladys made her onstage debut and was billed as ‘Little Gladys’.

She became a child soprano and was recognised as a child prodigy. In her teenage years she performed in popular Gilbert & Sullivan productions and won an award at The Annual Eisteddfod in Charters Towers.

At the age of 17 she auditioned in Sydney for J. C. Williamson's and was given work in the chorus. As the years went by, Gladys was given lead roles and toured in productions throughout Australia and New Zealand.

In 1921 she played the lead role of Theresa in Maid Of The Mountains in Melbourne at the Theatre Royal (which was opposite The Tivoli Theatre in Bourke Street).

Maid Of The Mountains was a very popular stage musical and Gladys played the role of Theresa almost 3000 times during her career. In 1924 she married Thomas Moore who became her manager. Whilst on her honeymoon in the UK and Europe Gladys began to make

Gladys was overlooked for roles in several major J. C. Williamson productions and signed with Fullers to star in Rio Rita which became another huge success for her.

During the depression years Gladys sang in cinemas and appeared on radio. In 1933 she returned to Williamson's for a revival of Maid Of The Mountains. She also worked for Frank Thring Snr in his first stage production, Collits' Inn. In 1938 Gladys was in a bad car accident in Geelong and suffered a serious leg injury. She retired from the stage for two years. When Williamson's planned a revival of Maid Of The Mountains in 1940, Peggy Shea was cast as

● Gladys Moncrieff Theresa and dubbed the ‘pocket Gladys Moncrieff’.

At the last minute Sir Frank Tait talked Gladys into coming out of retirement for the role and she made a triumphant return to the stage.

Her work during the war years to entertain the

troops in Australia and New Guinea was outstanding.

I have a handwritten note which reads, “My Dear Friends, My heartfelt thanks for your generous response to my appeal on behalf of the partially blinded soldiers, Sincerely Yours, Gladys Moncrieff.”

In 1945 Gladys had another major success when she starred in The Merry Widow. During the 1950s singing star Ted Hamilton worked on her radio series. In 1962 she made a guest appearance on the Queensland television show Theatre Royal hosted by George Wallace Jnr. She retired to the Gold Coast and lived on the Isle of Capri, Gladys wrote her memoirs and the book My Life In Song was published in 1971.

Gladys Moncrieff died on the Gold Cast in 1976 at the age of 83. She was made an OBE and there are parks and buildings named in her honour. A postage stamp was issued with her image in 1989. Gladys Moncrieff - one of the legends of the Australian stage - Our Glad.

Tom Schilling is superb as the young tormented artist, Kurt, and equally matched by Paula Beer as his young girlfriend and bride, Ellie, however, it is veteran award winning German actor Sebastian Koch, who's previous credits include the highly acclaimed "The Tunnel" (2001), "The Lives of Others" (2006), Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book" (2006), as well as Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies" (2015), that drives the knife right through the heart to all on-screen and off with searing complexity and menacing conviction as the Nazi doctor also attempting to avoid WWII crimes prosecution and escape to the west.

Beautifully photographed by six time Oscar nominated and multiaward winning cinematographer Caleb Deschanel (The Right Stuff/ The Natural), and aided by striking costume design, production design and period detail throughout its three decade journey, this is a genuinely thrilling superbly controlled exploration through the eyes, heart and work of an artist, a clash between war, love, totalitarianism and art, that achieves what too few other movies do today, and one that will stay firmly in the head and stir the subconscious for long after it's over.

The latest Disney animated extravaganza proves to be a generally entertaining adventure that borrows heavily from many other films, stories and myths, and while its cross-cultural ambitions are admirable, it doesn't quite hit a complete bullseye.

Set in an Asian kingdom long ago, the story centres on Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran), a young girl being trained by her benevolent father Benja (Daniel Dae Kim), who protects a magical stone that was created by dragons to defeat a formidable supernatural enemy, who could turn people into stone.

The Kingdom has split into five warring factions, all wanting to attain the power of the stone, but instead of fighting them, Benja wants to unite them, but after organising a meeting to propose this, a series of events sees the stone damaged, and the evil forces returning to wreak havoc across the land.

Six years later, Raya discovers Sisu (Awkwafina), the dragon who used the stone 500 years before, sending her down a different path to try and unite the land and its people.

This is a visually dazzling effort, with colourful, imaginative animation that blends imagery from all across the Asian territories, but it is the way the script mines multiple movies which undercuts its work a little too often.

Everything from Goemon, Mulan, The Dragon Dentist, The Dark Crystal, Indiana Jones, Tales From Eartthsea, Taro The Dragon Boy, Ne Zha, and of course, films from the great Hayao Miyazaki, notably Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Winds, seems to be tapped into one way or another, and as such the story's dramatic arc and impact is somewhat muted.

The comedy relief doesn't always work, while the messages of peace, trust and togetherness come across as a little heavy-handed and obvious.

The voice work is fine, with Awkwafina (The Farewell) in particular making for a boisterous Sisu, though the decidedly contemporary dialogue is occasionally distracting.

Raya And The Last Dragon is solid entertainment and good fun, but it lacks the genuine richness and power of the best animated films that come from the territories entwined and presented on screen.

This follow-up to the 1988 smash hit finally arrives, but instead of landing in cinemas, has gone straight to streaming. It's 33 years later, and the fabled land of Zamunda still flourishes under the stern reign of King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), but the torch is passed to Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) when his sickly father passes away. Akeem is still married to Lisa (Shari Headley), and the couple have three daughters, with the the eldest, Meeka (KiKi Layne), ready to become a responsible leader herself. However, the country's laws are outdated, with only a male heir allowed to rule.

Akeem discovers he has a son in Queens, Lavelle Junson (Jermaine Fowler), so after a quick trip to his old stomping ground, Akeem brings the bemused American back to Zamunda, where he will be trained to be the next in line to the throne. Causing problems is General Izzi (Wesley Snipes), from neighbouring country Nextdoria, who threatens war if a marriage of convenience can't be arranged between their offspring. I was never a fan of the original film, finding it a laboured vanity project for its star, Eddie Murphy (the teaming of director John Landis and star Murphy faired much better in the hilarious 1983 comedy, Trading Places), who was at the peak of his fame. This belated sequel is nothing more than a lazy rehash of the original, instead the fish-out-ofwater journey now centres on Lavelle. Fowler is a likeable enough actor, but the anaemic script gives him nothing to work with. The female empowerment theme is wellintentioned, but clumsily executed, resulting in some decidedly (and at times uncomfortable) mixed messages. On top of borrowing from the first film, there are also similarities to the 90s TV series Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. Flat and lacking any real energy, it's hard to believe this is from Craig Brewer, who helmed Hustle & Flow (2005), Black Snake Moan (2006) and Dolemite Is My Name (2019). After the bullseye that was Dolemite (where we saw Murphy deliver his best performance in years), lightening certainly doesn't strike twice with the Brewer/Murphy teaming.

So much of this film seems to have long passed its expiry date (though the production and costume design can't be faulted), with a lot of the humour and its male perspectives feeling like it was written in 1988. There are a number of references to the original (allowing for moments where both Murphy and Arsenio Hall to go under the CGI de-aging process), and even some pertaining to a couple of Murphy's memorable SNL characters. With large scale production numbers, cast reunions, and a potential air of good-natured silliness, this should be have been more fun than what it is.

Walking the vineyard rows and tasting grapes, Chester Osborn classifies and determines the ideal picking time for each individual vineyard.

Small batches of grapes are gently crushed, then transferred to five tonne headed-down open fermenters, all batches remain separate until final blending. The red wines are foot trod two thirds of the way through fermentation, and then basket pressed. d'Arenberg is one of the only wineries in Australia to basket press both white wines as well as reds, making for a labour intensive process, but the quality of the results makes this worthwhile as the action is controlled and extremely

The Queen to rule in Big Mile

■ Top class mar Arcadia Queen is the one to beat in the All Star Mile to be run at Moonee Valley this Saturday.

At her first run after a spell, she came from a long way back in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield to run a good second to the smart mare, Probabeel.

She was buried back in the ruck at the 600 metre mark, and finished hard to go down narrowly.

The 1600 metres of the Mile will be all to her liking, and I feel she can turn the tables on Probabeel.

Naturally Probabeel will be once again the one to beat, having won the Epsom over this distance back in October.

Russian Camelot is the mystery bag, having not run for some time.

He has been working well, he is all class, but it's a pretty smart field of milers.

Behemoth, standing around 17 hands is racing well, but I thought his run in the Futurity wasn't his best, although he was second up and is tops on his day. You can't dismiss him.

Tagaloa could go to Sydney, for the big races up there. The stable is keen to get more black type for Tagaloa looking at breeding purposes in the future.

The Philip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie showed a glimpse of his best form, when he finished hard in the Futurity, running a good third to the two mares.

However, you have to take him on trust as he can put in a bad one or two.

As a three-year-old, he won the Queensland Derby, and is a winner of nearly $2 million in stakemoney.

On the next line is the Cox Plate winner, Sir Dragonet, who failed to get anywhere near them in the Orr Stakes at Caulfield over a distance that was too short for him, that of 1400 metres.

He won the Cox Plate over 2040 metres, more like his best distance.

Even the 1600 metres of the All Star Mile may be too short, if he goes around.

The Sydney galloper, Mugatoo, should get a run now. Prepared by leading New South Wales trainer Kris Lees, he is smart on his day and needed the run when unplaced in the Apollo Stakes behind Colette, Kolding, and Verry Elleegant, in the Apollo Stakes over 1400 metres.

Back in October, he ran second behind Mirage Dancer in the Metropolitan over 2400 metres, He ran a great race in the Cox Plate finishing fourth behind Sir Dragonet over 2040 metres.

He has won eight of his 17 starts with three minor placings, and always puts in.

Star of the Seas prepared by top trainer, Chris Waller, impressed with his win in the Group Two Blamey Stakes, over 1600 metres at Flemington, and on his day would have to be a chance.

It was an encouraging effort as it was his second run since a spell, and the stable is confident that he will run well.

A runner that will carry a lot of sympathy is the Tasmanian, Still A Star, who got into the field on public votes.

■ Great news that the Thoroughbred Industry Careers will continue its Sponsorship of the Pony Club Australian National Championships.

The Championships will be held in September this year at the Benalla Equestrian Reserve.

The event, which attracts the best riders from all over Australia, presents TIC, with a prime opportunity to promote careers in the Thoroughbred Industry, and source potential trainees and future employees, for the industry.

A new ‘Ride to Time’ competition will be introduced tom the event this year.

This will further strengthen the synergies between horse racing and equestrian sports.

Eric Hurley passes at age 93 ■ One of harness racing's most loved participants, Eric Hurley passed away last week at the age of 93.

Eric was successful with his very good horse Minuteman in the 1964 Inter Dominion at the Melbourne Showgrounds prior to settling here from South Australia as well as two A.G. Hunter Cups, one of them in the same year.

I recall the horse winning the ‘Coles’ Cup prior after sitting three wide for the entire journey, no mean feat for the Showgrounds.

Minuteman was inducted into the Harness Racing "Hall Of Fame" in 2011.

One of Eric's popular horses was a mare by the name of Ballon Dessai who won several races and was an attraction whenever she stepped out, as she always carried a false tail which was fitted prior to the race after losing it at a young age.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family.

Valley voices

■ Another new week and harness racing continued as Yarra Valley commenced the week on Monday March 1 with the $25,000 Eastern Challenge the feature.

It was an even field to contest the race and a terrific one as well as Toolern Vale trainer Adam Kelly's smart 4Y0 Art Major-Lite Jagermeister entire Major Meister was the victor, producing an outstanding performance to do so.

Driven by Ryan Duffy, Major Meister starting from gate four on the second line was eased at the start as Hes Under Wraps (Kate Gath) flew away from gate five to lead.

Kicking clear on straightening with runs coming from all directions out wide, it was Cant Stop This (one/three - four wide approaching the home turn) to issue a challenge, with Tasmanian Watchmylips peeling off his back and Major Meister right off the track.

Gaining the upper hand as the winning post loomed, Cant Stop This was nabbed by Major Meister in the last stride to prevail by a half head, with Hes Under Wraps certainly not disgraced in finishing third 5.4 metres away.

In quarters of 30.1, 29.7, 29 and 28.8, Major Meister returned a mile rate of 1-59.6.

■ Members of Kilmore's Mifsud family (Julie, son Wille and sister-in-law Rita Burnett) combined to land the Yarra Valley Party Hire Trotters Handicap with 6Y0 Danny Bochea-Gina Dawn gelding Ero Carpe Diem in a rate of 205.5.

Trained by Julie and driven by Rita, Ero Carpe Diem began swiftly to lead from barrier two and was never headed, just lasting to score by a head from Stay Focused (one/three - three wide last lap) and Express Yourself which was always handy when third 7.7 metres back.

■ Tyabb part-owner/trainer Geoff Clout snared the Hi-Style Building Pace over 1650 metres with My Superannuation which returned a dividend of $6.80 for a win.

■ With Ballarat's Connor Clarke in the sulky, My Superannuation, a 5Y0 daughter of Mr Feelgood and Honeyrose was restrained from outside the front line to be four back in the moving line with the speedy Really Under Fire burning out from gate six to lead for Sean O'Sullivan.

Going forward three with mid-race to race exposed for the final circuit, My Superannuation after taking care of the leader on turning showed great fighting qualities to gain the day by a half head from River Patrol which appeared to have him covered in the shadows of the post.

Oceanique (three back the markers) was third 2.7 metres away. The rate 1-57.1.

■ Shepparton raced on Tuesday and Charlton based co-trainers Michael Gadsden and Denbeigh Wade enjoyed a great night after providing a stable double - first starter Captain Bling ($3.60) taking the Wangaratta Cup @ Shepparton 7th March 3Y0 Maiden Pace over 1690 metres and 4Y0 mare Sporting Model ($21.60) the Alabar Maiden Pace over the same journey, both horses driven by Denbeigh.

■ Sutton Grange owner/trainer Leigh Graham combined with Greg Sugars to land the Neatline Homes Pace over 1690 metres with 6Y0 Mr Feelgood-Jesse Grant gelding Tophut Johny.

Trailing the leader Jilliby Roy (gate five) from the pole, Tophut Johny using the sprint lane took an eternity to reel him in, scoring by a nose in a finish which tricked many. Hard Rock Shannon came from the rear to be third 1.3 metres back.

■ Local owner/trainer Darren Rowney provided an upset winner when 7Y0 Shadyshark Hanover-Picketwithapin gelding Lasting Bond ($24.20) greeted the judge in the Saddleworld Shepparton Pace over 1690 metres.

With Laura Crossland in the sulky, Lasting Bond eased three wide from three back on the home turn to score by 1.1 metres over a deathseating Muscle Up Major in 1-57.2. Fantasy Beach (one/one) was third after switching down to the sprint lane on turning.

■ At Bendigo on Wednesday, trotting races were the order of the night with five of the nine races dedicated to them.

Love You-Schleck colt Parisian Artiste broke her maiden status at start number thirteen when victorious in the Santons Of Bendigo 3Y0 Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres. Trained at Shelbourne by Kate Hargreaves and driven by Alex Ashwood, Parisian Artiste (gate three) led for the majority of the trip to record an easy 8.5 metre margin in advance of Appearfromknowhere (gate five) which trailed after leading out, with Luna third 74 metres away after following the pair. The mile rate 2-01.3.

■ First starter Mojito Madness, a beautifully bred gelded son of Bacardi Lindy and Sunny Folly trained at Cranbourne by Dylan Stratford landed the Smartline Personal Mortgage 2Y0 Maiden Trotters Handicap over 1650 metres in fine style.

Driven by Zac Phillips, Mojito Magic stepped straight to the front from barrier two and rated to perfection, coasted to the wire 3.2 metres clear of Stingofawasp also on debut which trailed returning a mile rate of 2-05.2. Eds Dream another first starter was third 1.7 metres back after following the pair.

■ Eight year old Bacardi Lindy-Earls Gold mare A Nip Will Do having start number 196 chalked up her 8th success by taking the 2150 metre J & A Mazzetti Painting Trotters Mobile for Carisbrook trainer/driver Brett Shipway.

Given a sweet trip from the pole trailing the pacemaking stablemate Louieville Lass which began with a wing on every foot from outside the front line, A Nip Will Do used the sprint lane to perfection and raced clear on the wire to score

by 3.6 metres in 2-01.1 from Bad As Now which went forward to race in the open. Yankee Twister (one/one) was third 7.1 metres away.

■ Dunnstown trainer/driver David Murphy landed the Bendigo Ski Boat Centre Trotters Mobile over 1650 metres with honest 8Y0 Peace Of Art-Lucky Rendezvous gelding Meet Michaelangelo in a rate of 1-59.2. Given an easy time one/one from gate two as Wizzbang Dan led from gate four and the favourite Quality Sunset worked forward after a slow beginning from gate six to park in the open, Meet Michaelangelo was assisted by the favourite galloping when pressuring the leader running into the final bend allowing him to join Whizzbang Dan which had been softened.

Finishing best, Meet Michaelangelo reached the wire 2.5 metres in advance of Whizzbang Dan and Sun Of Sonoko (three back the markers) who was 1.1 metres away third.

■ In-form home bred 5Y0 Red SamuraiStarlights Silver mare Starlight Red notched up her 6th success when taking the 2150 metre TLC Carpentry Trotters Mobile.

Trained at Bunbartha by Brian and Judy Bourke, Starlight Red driven by Laura Crossland led from gate three and had her rivals off the bit and chasing approaching the home turn. Kicking clear on straightening, Starlight Red scored by 7.8 metres in a rate of 2-02.2 from Dances (one/one last lap) and Piesridingshotgun who faced the breeze from the bell.

■ Ace Ballarat tennis coach Rob Benoit has a night at Ballarat trots on a regular basis each year for staff and sponsors etc and this was staged last Thursday - the feature being the Ballarat Regional Tennis Trotters Handicap over 2200 metres taken out by 4Y0 Andover Hall-Access To Success gelding Itsallandover for Beeac trainer Courtney Slater.

Driven by local reinsman Michael Stanley, Itsallandover (barrier four) was sent forward shortly after the start to lead and after a cosy trip, defied all challengers to score by 2.3 metres in advance of The Spanyan which trailed after leading out, with old timer Jaden Gil third 1.5 metre back after following the pair. ■ The Rob Benoit Tennis Claiming Pace over 2200 metres went the way of Long Forest trainer Andy Gath's Kiwi bred 6Y0 Auckland ReactorDreamy Delight gelding Aha Reaction in a rate of 1-59.6.

Driven by wife Kate, Aha Reaction began brilliantly from gate five to lead throughout, accounting for the Matthew Horsnell trained stablemates Madazalways which trailed from gate three and polemarker Our Sir Ivanhoe (three back the markers).

■ Daylesford trainer/driver Ann-Maree Conroy snared the 2200 metre Flying Horse Entertainment Venue Trotters Mobile with Shield Maiden, a 6Y0 daughter of Bacardi Lindy and Yankee Poem which no doubt delighted the large contingent of owners including mother Pat. Given a perfect passage one/one from gate six as polemarker Aru And Me led, Shield Maiden was eased three wide prior to the home turn and ran on best in the straight to overhaul the leader and prevail by 2.5 metres in a mile rate of 2-06.2.

Lethal Les was third a nose away after trailing the leader and gaining an inside run approaching the finish.

■ Melton co-trainers Anthony Butt and Sonya Smith continued their great run of late when American Ideal-Modern Day filly Orchid Stride driven by Zac Phillips scored in the Tomas Graca Tennis 3Y0 Pace for the fairer sex over 2200 metres.

Enjoying the run of the race from gate three trailing Ruby Wingate inside her, Orchid Stride after being extricated three wide on the final bend finished best to blouse a death-seating Seachange in the shadows of the post by 2.6 metres, with Twisted Bliss flashing home late from three back the markers for third a head after racing fiercely. Festival sells out

■ More than a month and a half ahead of the event, the inaugural Gippsland Country Music Festival has sold out.

This is a coup for the festival, which sports an enviable line-up featuring headliner Lee Kernaghan, as well as Brad Cox, Casey Barnes, Felicity Urquhart, Andrew Swift and The Davidson Brothers.

The one-day festival also includes whipcracking demonstrations, to line-dancing classes, rides, market stalls and a host of delicious Gippsland food traders to sample from.

Organised by the crew at Red Hill Entertainment, including brothers Aidan and Rhett McLaren who grew up and live in Gippsland, and also put on the popular The Hills Are Alive and NYE on the Hill festivals, the Gippsland Country Music Festival was a dream to bring country music to their home region.

Seven moves on

■ The Seven Network has confirmed its Sydney headquarters, in Eveleigh, will house all of Seven's Sydney offerings by December 2022. This means the closure of the current Martin Place office, where 7News Sydney and Sunrise are filmed.
