New school opens at Ramleigh Pk

● Jordan Crugnale, MLA for Bass ■ Families across Clyde North will have access to a ocal school close to home as Ramlegh Park Primary School opened its doors.

Jordan Crugnale, Bass MLA, was joined by State Education Minister James Merlino on Friday (Jan. 29) to officially open the new school and welcome its first students.

The school will cater for 525 students and includes two learning neighbourhoods, administration building, outdoor play courts, performing arts and physical education building as well as a sports field.

Ramlegh Park Primary School has more than 400 students starting this year, including more than 130 Prep students, and is one of 14 new schools opening in 2021.

A kindergarten has been built next door which will open in Term 1, 2021 with space for 99 kids. It will deliver both sessional and integrated kindergarten programs for three- and four-year-olds.

Local News At Cranbourne West

■ Cranbourne West Secondary College has officially opened its doors.

James Merlino, State Education Minister, and Pauline Richards, Cranbourne MLA, welcomed its first students on Friday (Jan. 29).

The school will cater for up to 1100 mainstream and 100 specialist students once all stages are complete.

It includes a new learning community, visual arts building, a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) building, an administration building, sports field and two outdoor play courts.

Plastic roads

■ Mornington Peninsula Shire will soon be completing the third and final stage of the Bentons Rd upgrade in Moorooduc – one of the Peninsula’s significant east-west road corridors.

The final stage will be improving the section of Bentons Rd between Moorooduc Hwy and Derril Road.

This stage follows the already completed widening of Loders Rd, as well as the construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Bentons Rd and Derril Rd. Stage three works will include: ■ widening of the existing road pavement ■ installation of new and upgrade of existing drainage infrastructure ■ installation of crash barriers ■ an upgrade of the intersection of Gorman/ Rickards/Bentons Rds As part of the stage three works, a 1.6km stretch of Bentons Rd will be constructed with Plastiphalt – an asphalt product using recycled waste plastic.

D’nong art initiative

■ Residents from five aged care facilities channelled their inner artist during lockdown, with art packs gifted to the centres as part of the City of Greater Dandenong’s 9 by 5 Exhibition.

More than 270 artworks were displayed on the walls at the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre.

Wetlands Day ■ World Wetlands Day was celebrated internationally yesterday (Tue., Feb. 2). A guided walk was scheduled for Warringine Park.

An event was held Boneo Park last Sunday (Jan. 31). Attendees could learn about the Tootgarook Wetland and the creatures calling it home.

Working for D’nong

■ Some 97 new staff were ‘onboarded’ to a range of positions at the City of Greater Dandenong as part of the Working For Victoria initiative.

“This program has so many lasting benefits. It’s getting people back into work after they’ve lost their jobs or suffered long-term unemployment, and the work they are doing will have lasting benefits for our city and those who live here,” said Cr Angela Long, Mayor.

Volunteer funding ■ Mornington Peninsula Shire has secured funding of $23,000 from the Victorian Government through Volunteering Victoria to strengthen volunteer connections on the Peninsula.

The Shire has established Volunteering Information Hubs at the Mornington Community Information and Support Centre (320 Main St, Mornington) and Western Port Community Support (185 High St, Hastings).

Library re-opens

■ Seaford Library re-opened on Monday (Feb. 1) this week. The City of Frankston says that the library has new NBN services.

“Our computer systems are back up and running and we have new high-speed internet,” said a Council representative.

Frankston rail works continue ● Alan Wickes in his Collingwood Football Club playing days Frankston South football identity Alan George Wickes was last week recognised in the Australia Day Honours for his local footy achievements.

Alan’s involvements have included the Frankston and District Junior Football League Inc., the Victorian Football Association, Frankston Football Club, Frankston and District Junior Football League Umpires Association, Seaford Football Club, and as a past player of the Collingwood Football Club, 1958-1961.

■ Buses replace Frankston and Stony Point line trains this week as crews continue removing level crossings at Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach.

Train passengers will travel on buses between Mordialloc and Stony Point until last service on Sunday (Feb. 7).

There will also be road closures at four level crossings to allow crews to deliver the works as quickly and safely as possible.

The Edithvale Rd level crossing will close until 7pm today (Wed., Feb. 3) with detours via Lochiel or Swanpool Avenues.

The Bondi Rd level crossing will close until 3am on Monday (Feb. 8) with detours via McLeod Rd or Argyle Ave. The Chelsea Rd level crossing was close don Monday (Feb. 1) between 7am and 7pmment directions.

The Argyle Ave level crossing was closed overnight on Monday (Feb. 1).

Breeze St , Bonbeach will also be closed between Station St and Patterson St daily between 7am and 6pm until Thursday, February 11. Motorists are advised to use Patterson St as an alternative.

To help with bus access, up to 70 car spaces will be closed in the Frankston station car park

Pedestrians will still be able to cross the Frankston line at level crossings, however all pedestrian crossings will be closed in the impacted section of the line.

The works will include rail signalling and overheads, piling, utility, drainage and vegetation removal across the four level crossings.

Greater Dandenong’s Corporate Citizen of the Year is Nirad Shah, a catalyst and driver of the annual charity event, Take a Swing for Charity GolfDay. The event is run in partnership with Council and local industry. Nirad Shah’s family-owned business, KPJ Australia has supported the event as a sponsor since its inception 11 years ago, and Nirad has also raised an additional several hundred thousand dollars in that time.

Flinders M H R G r e g Hunt is encouraging Mornington Peninsula residents to submit their suggestions for upgrades to mobile phone black spots before March 5. He says that $380 million will be made available nationally in the latest round of funding. “This new round of the Mobile Black Spot Program will have a specific focus on improving mobile ● Greg Hunt coverage along major transport corridors and in disaster-prone regions,” Mr Hunt said.

■ “Not so fast”, Greater Dandenong Council is saying about proposals for a hazardous lquid waste recycling plant at Dandenong South.

The State Government made an announcement on January 10 regarding the planned recycling plant.

“This announcement relates to a grant that has been provided to a Dandenong South business by Sustainability Victoria for the treatment of hazardous liquid wastes,” said a Council statement, “At this stage the recipient firm has not yet made application to the City of Greater Dandenong for a Planning Permit and they understand that this is a statutory requirement and process to be completed.

“It is important to note that even though a grant has been awarded, this does not presume that a planning permit will be,” said the Council.

Local Briefs Mornington fatal

■ A man has died after his vehicle lost control and rolled in Mornington last week.

Police believe the vehicle, which was travelling south on Nepean Hwy, lost control near Webber St and struck two light poles before it rolled.

The male driver, believed aged in his 20s, was ejected from the vehicle and sadly died at the scene.

Nepean Hwy was closed between Strachans and Bentons Rds, both north and south bound, while police processed and rehabilitated the scene.

Police are investigating whether speed was a factor in the crash.

A report will also be prepared for consideration of the Coroner.

Centre at Officer ■ A new childcare and family centre will soon be constructed in Officer South, providing more kindergarten places for children in the fast-growing suburb.

Local Government Minister Shaun Leane joined local MPs Harriet Shing and Jordan Crugnale to turn the first sod on the $7.7 million Officer South Integrated Child and Family Centre.

When complete, the new centre will provide more than 130 kindergarten places for families in Officer South and the surrounding area, alongside five consulting rooms for maternal and child health services and two community rooms for events and classes.

The centre is joint funded by $1.5 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund and $2 million from the Training Facilities and Capital Funding. Cardinia Shire Council has also committed $4.2 million.

The Growing Suburbs Fund is a $325 million investment over six years in critical local infrastructure in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

Since 2015, Cardinia Shire Council has received more than $26 million in funding to support the delivery of 14 priority projects.

Some 400 interviews will be conducted through a process of random selection. Residents are unable to request participation.

Joint winners ■ The City of Greater Dandenong selected joint winners of its Young Leader of the Year Award.

Amy Chu is a volunteer with Red Cross and has been volunteering with the City of Greater Dandenong for almost four years.

She has been a participant and mentor in a number of programs with Youth and Family Services.

Asmaa Mannasaheb established herself from a young age as a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer who is always willing to work towards the improvement of her community.

She has volunteered with Greater Dandenong Youth and Family Services as well as other organisations, including initiatives to support the Muslim community, and was recently selected to deliver an inspirational speech to VCE students.

Heritage grants ■ Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Heritage Grants are available to owners of heritage places to assist with carrying out heritage conservation projects.

The grants aim to help owners of heritage places in maintaining and preserving their property. Individual grants are usually up to a few thousand dollars.

Abalone haul: 7 arrests ■ Seven men, allegedly involved in an abalone poaching syndicat.e were arrested at Mornington by Fisheries Officers and Victoria Police.

Mornington officers observed two men, one of which was known to them for previous alleged abalone offences, allegedly taking abalone at Fossil Beach.

Victorian Fisheries Authority Director of Education and Enforcement Ian Parks said the men were searched and apprehended after one of the alleged offenders attempted to flee but was caught and arrested.

“During the search, the two men were allegedly found in possession of a commercial quantity of abalone, including 126 blacklip abalone (76 undersize) and one undersize greenlip abalone,” Mr Parks said.

All abalone were returned to the water and the vehicle and dive equipment were seized.

Both men were taken to the Mornington Police Station for interviews and subsequently charged with taking a commercial quantity of abalone. They were released on strict bail conditions, which included not being within 5km of a Victorian marine water.

Officers observed five men, of which one was also known for previous offences, allegedly take abalone near Fishermans Beach at Mornington.

The men were apprehended at 7.45pm, with assistance from Victoria Police, after they left the coast. Officers found a further 189 blacklip abalone (70 undersize) in the vehicle when it was searched.

The men were arrested and taken to the Mornington Police Station for interviews where they were subsequently charged with taking a commercial quantity of abalone and released on the same strict bail conditions. Their vehicle was seized.

The men are due to appear at Dromana Magistrates’ Court on February 18.

Fit to be the best in Casey ■ Sumandip Kaur, a qualified fitness instructor, was last week named the 2021 Casey Citizen of the Year, for her inspired commitment and selfless dedication to serving the community throughout the 2020 lockdown.

When gyms and other fitness facilities were closed, Sumandip started running free online fitness classes, seven days a week.

She welcomed anyone to join, including senior citizens, those with mental health challenges and families.

Ajantha Weerakkody was named the Casey Senior Citizen of the Year, Livinia Walden the Casey Young Citizen of the Year and the inaugural winner of the Casey Local Hero of the Year was awarded to Subhashini Singhal.

Administrator Noelene Duff congratulated all winners.

■ A Dromana woman believes following a “lucky tradition” of lighting a green candle, eating dark chocolate and declaring “I am lucky” prior to buying a lottery ticket led her to her Tattslotto win last month.

Founded in 1952, it has a long and proud history of serving the community. Over the past few years participation has increased substantially and today the group has more than 100 youth members aged 5-25.

During COVID-19 restrictions the various groups continued to meet virtually on a weekly basis.

Role in recovery ■ “The Mornington Peninsula will play an integral role in Victoria’s and our nation’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Flinders MHR Greg Hunt.

Boost for Flinders Hall ● From Page One ■ A total budget of $4.5 million will be applied to the re-development of the Flinders Hall.

Anticipated upgrades to the services and utilities will occur in early April , with the main construction commencing in late September.

Project completion is currently expected in October 2023.

The facility will be home to a wide variety of community groups and services including: Flinders Art Show, Flinders Arts Group, Flinders Community Association, Flinders Lions, Flinders Probus and Flinders RSL. There are classes for older adult exercise, pilates, Yoga classes and other activities.

Some redesign features to be included in the new Flinders Community Hub are: ■ Multipurpose hall ■ Large terrace/porch ■ Two multi-purpose areas ““This project is a welcome improvement for the Flinders community,” said Red Hill Ward’s Cr David Gill.

“Updating the hall but keeping it in tune with village character is a great outcome. The hall will have more capacity to meet the needs of local groups.”

■ A new community task force, designed to empower women, girls, non-binary and diverse genders, is being formed at the City of Casey to prevent family violence and achieve gender equality.

The Women and Girls Gender Equality Task Force will help ensure that the municipality’s policies, programs and services address the barriers to gender equality, and ensure equal representation.

Expressions of interest will close at 5pm on Sunday (Feb. 7).

New centre at Mornington ■ Young and elderly Victorians will learn under the same roof together, with the State Government backing construction of an international learning centre in Mornington.

Ingrid Stitt, Minister for Early Childhood Ingrid Stitt, announced Andrew Kerr Care will receive $500,000 from the Labor Government to construct a 66-place facility creating an Intergenerational Learning Centre.

This intergenerational model of care offered

by Herd, provides opportunities for children and aged care residents to come together five days a week to enjoy activities together, such as art, music, lunch, storytelling, or just visiting.

The Herd offers children unique opportunities to become part of an extended family; to learn about the ageing process; to accept people with disabilities; and to be involved with people who are two or three generations apart.

“We are thrilled to soon have a leading intergenerational centre in our community, to foster a love of learning and compassion spanning the decades,” said Jane Garrett, MLC for Eastern Victoria.

“We know that quality early childhood services provide a better start in life and this investment will ensure no child is left behind.”

The project will help meet the local demand for a three-and four-year-old kindergarten.

Thief at bottle shop ■ Detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for public assistance as part of their ongoing investigation into a series of burglaries in the south east last month.

Investigators have been told a man gained entry to an automotive store on BerwickCranbourne Road, Clyde North and stole a quantity of tools.

It is believed the same man gained entry to a bottle shop on the South Gippsland Hwy, Cranbourne North and stole numerous boxes of alcohol.

On January 1, the same man gained entry to a chemist on Webb St , Narre Warren.

Investigators have released CCTV images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is believed to be Caucasian in appearance, aged between 35 to 50-years-old, and was driving a blue Astra .

Carrum Downs burg probe ■ Detectives from Frankston Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for public assistance following a burglary in Carrum Downs in January.

Investigators have been told a man and a woman were seen loitering in Parkdale Drive between 1pm and 3.45pm on January 18.

Officers believe the woman kept watch while the man broke into a nearby property and stole electronic gaming devices, a laptop and a credit card.

Investigators have released images of two people they believe may be able to assist with their enquires.

588 offences: Police

■ Officers from the Mornington Peninsula Police Service Area as well as the Water Police Squad conducted a three-day operation over theAustralia Day long weekend focusing on water safety, marine compliance and public order.

Operation Unity across the Mornington Peninsula foreshore precincts came on the back of several weeks of increased serious marine related incidents in the waters extending from Mount Martha to Portsea.

Police were supported by other government and volunteer agencies.

Over the course of the operation 588 offences were detected on the waters and foreshore precinct with 66 infringement notices issued to personal watercraft and boat operators about half of which related to speeding or irregular operation within 5 knot zones.

“The fact that we had no marine related injuries or collisions between vessels over the course of the three days means that it was a successful operation,” said Rosebud Police Acting Sergeant Flyn Loughlin “I think that’s attributable to the fact that there was a highly visible presence of police on the water particularly down the southern end of Port Phillip and right across our peninsula foreshore precincts.

“We also had a highly visible police presence on land right across our foreshore precincts. We won’t tolerate poor behaviour that jeopardises the safety of other water users.”

Local Theatre Midsummer Night

■ Last week to the Botanic Gardens and Glenn Elston's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

I have lost count of the number of times since the late eighties I sat under moon or stars and watched Australian Shakespeare Company productions of the Dream.I thought the most recent amongst the best I've seen.

I surtitle this review: Why the Australian Shakespeare Company and why back to the Dream so often?

Part one of my answer is obvious but always true; it's a Shakespearean play (probably written between 1594 and 1596) which places it after Shakespeare had completed Romeo and Juliet .

Part two, it's great entertainment in the open air.I saw one critic describe the production as "al fresco".The night I went it was more "un po' raffreddata" but that's all to the good, keeps me focussed and it can be fun to share a blanket.

● Kerry Greenwood ■ It's not often that a book written 20 years ago suddenly becomes more relevant in 2021 than it was when it was first published.

But that's the case with acclaimed author Kerry' Greenwood's 2001 publication called A Different Sort of Real, which examined how Melbourne coped with the onslaught of the 1918 influenza pandemic, known then as the Spanish Flu. With our own COVID- 19 pandemic upon us, Kerry updated and re-released the book, now called Contagion, with the attention grabbing headline of “the Great War is over .. but a new war has begun”.

Told in the first person, it is the story of 14year-old Charlotte McKenzie, whose mother is a nurse, while her father who has shell shock from the Great War. Charlotte's secret desire is to be a doctor, though in her modest suburban home aiming at being a nurse is as far as her dream is likely to go.

But when this strange flu starts spreading, she is given the chance to assist the doctor next door on his rounds with his weekly community clinic for those in need.

What follows is a fascinating story that s totally believable, and it is uncanny how so many of the public health measures we endured last year, were the only defence 1918 Melbourne had against that pandemic schools, cinemas, theatres, music halls and race tracks were all closed down.

While in 2020 there are more medical options to help, in those days there was very little, although the brand new wonder drug, aspirin, was just starting to make an appearance.

While Kerry is best known for her Phyrne Fisher books, which spawned the television series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Contagion is a lot closer to home for her, having been taken from Kerry's own family history.

"My great-grandmother Isabelle McKenzie was a young girl during the influenza epidemic of 1918-19. She did all the things described in the book and my middle name (Isabelle) was given to me in memory of her achievements and experiences," Kerry explained There is no higher compliment to a book that to say that you can't put it down, and Contagion is definitely that kind of book.

Industry exposé

■ ABC reporter and double Walkley winner, Sarah Dingle, has announced a publication date for her first book, Brave New Humans.

Sarah describes the book as a real-life "whodunnit" and exposé of the donor conception and fertility industry.

Brave New Humans has also stemmed from her investigation into her own existence and origins.

The book is being published by Hardie Grant on May 5.

Talk is cheap, gossip is priceless

Photo: Jeff Busby ■ The tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland, is ‘the farthest place you’ll get from Disneyland’, and home to ‘the wildest weather you’ve ever heard of’.

It is also the unlikely setting for Come From Away, a musical folktale based on an extraordinary event.

On September 11, 2001, 38 international flights carrying nearly 7000 passengers and crew were diverted to this remote Canadian airfield doubling the population of the town ‘on the edge of the world’.

The community swung into action embracing the dazed and disoriented ‘come from aways’ organising meals and beds in school halls and homes.

The response of the Newfoundlanders has become the stuff of legend.

The hokey premise of this tale as a musical shouldn’t work, but somehow it is transcendent.

This sparkling production, tightly directed

by ChristopherAshley, features an ensemble cast of 12 actors, many playing multiple roles.

There were many great performances.

Sarah Morrison is engaging as rookie reporter Janice thrown in the deep end on her first day on the job.

Zoe Gertz is equally strong as Beverley Bass, United Airlines first female captain.

Emma Powell is impressive as the formidable schoolteacher, Beulah, taking charge of the ragtag guests.

There are lots of laughs, many provided

by Kolby Kindle’s suspicious New Yorker, Bob. There are also many poignant moments.

Hannah (Sharriese Hamilton), desperate to hear news of her son, a New York City firefighter, is comforted by Beulah, the beginning of a lasting friendship.

After 90 minutes of non-stop entertainment, the audience erupted into cheers and an all-in, standing ovation leaving the cast and the band members visibly moved.

This terrific, fast-paced show about the best of us is just what is needed to declare live theatre is back in Melbourne.

Glenn has cast this production with an hilarious Bottom from Richard Piper and an excellent exasperated Peter Quince in Kevin Hopkins, but although the play ends (excluding the omnes reconciliation) with the Mechanical's performance of the most lamentable comedy and most cruel death of Pyramus and Thisby there is much more to the Dream that sometimes gets lost in direction.

The scenes between Oberon and Alison Whyte as Titania don't work all that well.

She is too bossy and Oberon almost anodyne.Thankfully Fletcher O'Leary's Puck is a full on physically adventurous and at times erotically charged performance that keeps the fairy kingdom central to the narrative.

What I think is often lost in production is the lesson that the magic of love may too often be easily magicked away and constancy foresworn can be newly sworn to another.

A follow-up to Occupation (2018), Occupation: Rainfall commences two years into an intergalactic invasion of Earth, with survivors in Sydney fighting a desperate war with mounting casualties.

The alien invaders are fiercely determined to make Earth their new home and Sydney appears to be the last remaining city.

Repelling the invaders' efforts are members of the resistance, remaining Australian Army soldiers, and peace-loving 'greys' (aliens), now refugees in their new country.

The Sydney survivors' hideaway inside the Blue Mountains is attacked. Here, nasty underground secret experiments on captured aliens, ordered by Wing Commander Hayes (Daniel Gillies) are eventually sorted by kindhearted Amelia Chambers (Jet Tranter) .

The codename 'Rainfall' is linked to a facility in Pine Gap and Matt Simmons (Dan Ewing) and alien 'grey' Gary (richly-voiced Lawrence Makoare) volunteer to travel from Sydney in convoy, with a seemingly limitless supply of ammunition, suffering losses on the way and encountering monster rodents. Peter Bartlett (Temeura Morrison) from a rural community joins their journey.

For over an hour, this movie appears serious as the narrative entwines with ace-fighter planes, spectacular explosions, fire, destruction, children scavenging for food and human.carnage.

But inexplicably, when Matt and Garry arrive at the Pine Gap American Surveillance Camp and meet nervy US Intelligence Agent Bud Miller (Ken Jeong) and moustached 'grey' alien Steve (voice by Jason Issacs), the drama becomes comedy with entertaining scenes. It is annoying to an audience when script tension and momentum risks fracture by contrasting mood.

Also, some fight scenes are too long and the busy action restricts character development.

But producing this film in Australia is a remarkable feat and congratulations to Luke Sparke for achieving such awesome big screen visual effects, enhanced by Frederik Wiedmann's powerful soundtrack.

Principal actors also include Dena Kaplan, Temeura Morrison, Mark Coles Smith, David Roberts, Vince Colosimo, Zac Garred and Trystan Go. Duration: 125 minutes. Now screening in Australian cinemas.

■ Alan Johnson's Melbourne-based company, Hoteliers International Corporation, which operates the Ramada Plaza Hotel in West Hollywood, has been in Melbourne celebrating Australia Day with his old mate Sam Kekovich.

Alan Johnson was involved over the past 15 years, in ‘Australia Week’in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.

All major events for G'Day L.A. have been cancelled due to COVID-19 recording alarming figures across America.

Seattle not safe ■ Seattle is preparing to slash the city's police budget just as homicides in the city climb to their highest level in more than a decade.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan is set to sign a city budget that includes an 18 per cent cut to the Seattle Police Department, a move that comes after Police reform activists demanded the police budget be reduced by half.

Calls for police reform have abounded in cities across the country since May, when George Floyd died at the hands of police in Minneapolis.

The city council voted last week to slash about $69 million in funding for officer training, salaries and overtime, and get rid of vacant positions in the police department as well as transfer parking officers, mental health workers, and 911 dispatchers out of the department.

The goal is to ultimately reinvest in alternatives to police in situations such as mental health crises. Meanwhile, Seattle had seen 55 murders this year as of Monday, the highest level since at least 2008, the last year of data available.

The troubled city is also suffering a spike in violent crime, with 8418 burglary incidents, up from to 7634 last year, according to police.

New York not so good

■ More than 300,000 New Yorkers have bailed from the Big Apple in the last eight months, new stats show. City residents filed 295,103 change of address requests from March 1 through Oct. 31, according to data obtained from the US Postal Service under a Freedom of Information Act request.

Since the data details only when 11 or more forwarding requests were made to a particular county outside NYC, the number of moves is actually higher.

And a single address change could represent an entire household, which means far more than 300,000 New Yorkers fled the five boroughs.

Whatever the exact number, the exodus which began when COVID-19 hit the city in early spring is much greater than in prior years.

From just March through July, there were 244,895 change of address requests to destinations outside of the city, more than double the 101,342 during the same period in 2019.

The escape from New York is fuelled not only by Coronavirus concerns, but economic worries, school chaos and rising crime, experts say.

Rich man moves to Texas

■ Texas has a new, very rich resident. Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX and the world's richest man, has said he has quit California for the Lone Star State, where Tesla's new factory is being built, after a series of well-publicised run-ins with California authorities over his coronavirus strategy.

Musk refused to obey orders to keep shuttered his factories in the early days of the pandemic.

Musk revealed his move at an event organized by The Wall Street Journal.

He said the San Francisco Bay Area "has too much influence on the world," but added that he believed the power locus was shifting, saying, "I think we'll see some reduction in the influence of Silicon Valley."

Conveniently for Musk, who qualified this year for billions of dollars in stock-option compensation as part of a pay-package agreement, Texas doesn't collect state income or capital-gains taxes for individuals.

■ New York City's iconic 21 Club restaurant is closing down after 90 years of good food and even better celebrity intrigue.

The historic Midtown eatery a favourite haunt for John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway and Frank Sinatra, and a dining spot for nearly every president since FDR, has shuttered its jockeys-guarded doors indefinitely.

Its 148 employees have been told that they'll all be out of a job as of early March.

"The company is exploring potential opportunities that will allow 21 Club to remain a viable operation in the long term, while retaining its distinctive character," a spokesperson said.

"At this early stage, we are not ready to announce any final concept or timeframe, but the vision is that 21 Club will always remain an important social and cultural hub and icon of New York, one that is well positioned to fulfil its role in the City's exciting future when the time comes."

News of 21's closing came just hours after Gov. Cuomo announced that indoor dining will shut down yet again throughout the state due to increasing COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations and deaths.

The restaurant had already been shuttered since March, 2020 "to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus and protect its guests and employees," the spokesman said.

"In light of the ongoing global crisis and anticipated extended recovery period for the hospitality industry, the difficult decision has been made that it will not be feasible to reopen the 21 Club in its current form for the foreseeable future."

The eatery opened on January 1, 1930, quickly becoming one of America's most famous speakeasies from the Prohibition Era, a description from its Facebook page says.

The restaurant features 10 private dining rooms, including a Prohibition-era wine cellar, and is steeped in legend.

With the exception of George W. Bush, every president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt has dined at 21.

Magazine ■ There was a lot of controversy in Australia in 1972 when the lead role of ‘Napoleon Bonaparte’ was being cast for a new television series Boney.

The series was based on the novels of Arthur Upfield and produced by John McCallum for his company, Fauna Productions.

John was looking for a half-caste actor to play the famous outback detective. The Aboriginal community felt it should have gone to an indigenous Aboriginal actor but after an extensive auditioning process John felt he had made the right choice in James Laurenson.

James Laurenson was born in Marton, New Zealand in 1940.

He completed his drama studies at University in New Zealand and then moved to England to try his luck as an actor in 1965.

James told me it was quite a culture shock one day he was onstage in the UK playing a role in a Shakespeare play and a few days later he was in the Australian outback covered in black make up, wearing a cowboy hat, riding a horse and suffering from a very sore posterior.

There were guest stars in every episode of Boney including Honor Blackman who told me recently that she loved being in the series.

Twenty-six episodes were filmed in colour at a cost of about $60,000 each. James Laurenson was working in Australia for about two years before returning the UK. During his career he has been a guest star in

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE [PG/1946]: Director Frank Capra's beautifully sentimental 1946 classic starring James Stewart and Donna Reed about a man who is down on his luck and contemplates suicide only to be visited by an angel who shows him how his life had affected others had he never existed, is not only compulsive Christmas viewing, but great for any time of the year, and just improves with age. The stellar cast pull it off brilliantly, and if you don't shed a tear with this one you have a heart of stone, one of the great classics of all time! Stars: ***** THE SMALL ONE [G/1978]: A small animated film with a big heart! The beautiful and enchanting tale of a young boy in biblical times who must sell his frail donkey, only to be met with more heartbreak and humiliation along the way, until a mysterious man appears buys the boy's prize pet and the donkey embarks on a journey of historical greatness. One of Disney's great classics, and once seen, it is never forgotten, this priceless little gem can be found on the Walt Disney DVD 'Countdown to Christmas.' Stars: ***** LOVE ACTUALLY [M15+/2003]: Here's one for the adults, a touching and highly entertaining British comedy of a group of people all facing assorted issues in their lives in the lead up to Christmas, full of charm, humour and wit. The outstanding cast includes Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Laura Liney, Alan Rickman, Colin Firth, Rowan Atkinson and Billy Bob Thornton, all are excellent, but it's Bill Nighy's performance as the fading rocker that completely steals the show, and again, not for the kiddies.

Stars: **** MIRACLE ON 34th STREET [G/1947]: Great character actor Edmund Gwenn deservedly won the Academy award for his standout performance in this charming fable as Kris Kringle, who in modern times is working at Macy's Department store and tells everyone that he really is Santa Clause, then he meets an unbelieving girl [Natalie Wood] and must go to court to prove that he is in fact the real Santa. A real treat for the whole family, cast also includes Maureen O'Hara and John P ayne, bit it belongs to Edmund Gwenn in the performance of a lifetime! Stars: ***** THE POLAR EXPRESS [G-2004]: Wonderfully exhilarating animated adventure about a young boy with too many doubts about Christmas who is suddenly awoken late on Christmas Eve by a giant train and a mysterious conductor, voiced

by Tom Hanks, who offers to takes him on the journey of a lifetime and to restore his faith, and so he hops aboard, so the fun and thrills begin. A delightful, colourful and exciting adventure ride brimming with eye-popping animation and special effects. Stars: **** NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION [M/1989]: It's vacation time again, but the Griswold family decide to stay home for Christmas, and you guessed it, all goes haywire, as anything that can go wrong certainly does, one of the funniest in this third film in the hit vacation series, filled with plenty of laughs, and even some poignant moments. Stars Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo and Randy Quaid are all in top form, this is one family that you don't want to receive a Christmas Day dinner invite from, a Christmas treat for adults and older children. Stars: **** MILLIONS [PG/2004]: Alex Etel, James Nesbitt and Lewis McGibbon star in Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire Oscar winning filmmaker Danny Boyle's energetic and enchanting Christmas parable of two brothers who discover a stolen bag of bank notes that are about to become worthless by year's end and soon learn what they are really made of. Brimming with many exciting, funny and poignant moments thanks to Danny Boyle's unique and eclectic handling, this is a gem from beginning to end not to be missed! Stars: **** WE'RE NO ANGELS [PG-1955].

The delightfully quirky and wonderfully whimsical comedy classic of three prisoners who escape from the infamous Devil's Island and decide to rob a store to get some money and travel to safety.

However, the three wise convicts end up spending Christmas night with a generous family, and they decide to stay and help fix a crisis. Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray and Peter Ustinov are perfectly cast in this enchantingly unforgettable off-kilter comedy of three lovable rogues who will tickle the funny bone and warm the heart.

Rourke’s Reviews Welcome to 2021

■ It's great to be back, and let's hope 2021 is an improvement over 2020.

Among many sectors that shut down, cinema was one of them, and although it's still fighting an uphill battle, at least Australian audiences have been able to return to theatres, albeit under strict guidelines.

Here is a small selection of what I saw over the break (I also listened to some terrific albums, including Eyes Wide Open by Twice, Travel

by Mamamoo, and What Do I Call You Now? by Taeyeon).

Run. ***. Aneesh Chaganty's follow-up to Searching is another effective, compact thriller, but is partially undone by an obvious performance by the perennially overthe-top Sarah Paulson, making the twists appear quite telegraphed.

Small Axe Series. *****. Academy Award winning film-maker Steve McQueen's exceptional series of five films, examining the experiences of London's West Indian community between 1969 and 1982, is searing, brutal, confrontational, insightful, intimate, and most of all, passionate. Was one of the greatest releases for 2020.

Voice Of Silence. ***½. An enthralling, low-key look at a child kidnapping, and the moral ambiguity that follows.

The Call. ****. Wildly clever thriller that makes the most of its outrageous premise. A remake that is far superior to the original 2011 movie.

Me And Me. ***½. Acclaimed actor Jung Jin-young makes an impressive directorial debut with this quietly disorientating mystery drama that explores identity and a sense of place.

Monster Hunter. *. Paul W.S. Anderson's attempt to start a new franchise is so bad, it makes his awful Resident Evil films look good by comparison.

Ma Rainey's Bottom. ***½.

Though it can't escape its stage origins, and plot and character introductions are all-too-brief, this remains an involving period drama, elevated by a gallery of strong performances.

Nomadland. ****½. After her first two features, Songs My Brother Taught Me and especially The Rider, were criminally overlooked by audiences, supremely talented director Chloe Zhao finally attains the recognition she deserves with this Terrence Malick inspired drama, which is an absolute joy to behold. Stars Oscar winner Frances McDormand.

The Midnight Sky. **½. After helming the misfires Suburbicon and The Monuments Men, actor/ director makes a partial return to

form here, but this restrained apocalyptic drama is still an unengaging disappointment.

Soul. ***½. After a recent string of hit-and-misses, Pixar return to form with this engaging comedy/ drama, though it isn't as good as the thematically similar Inside Out. Mank. ***½. David Fincher meticulously brings 1930s Hollywood to life in this scabrous look at the making of Citizen Kane. Gary Oldman is superb.

Wolfwalkers. ****. The makers of The Secret Of Kells, Song Of The Sea and The Breadwinner again deliver the goods with this beautifully animated fable that thoughtfully examines its flawed, human characters.

The Dry. ***. Okay drama/ thriller that is filled with convincing regional atmosphere, despite a plot that is a little too easy to work out, particularly if you've seen David Mamet's excellent 1991 procedural, Homicide. Unsubtle casting also doesn't help.

High Ground. **½. Wellcrafted but disappointingly shallow drama that never fully explores its violent, challenging subject matter.

Jack Thompson easily steals the film.

Promising Young Woman. ***½. Another strong directorial debut, this time by actor-turned-director Emerald Fennell. A potent mix of dark humour and social commentary, with a finale that is reminiscent of the 2016 Korean film, Missing You. Shadow In The Cloud. ***. A divisive film that entertainingly runs with its genre mash-up premise and deliberately unrealistic approach.

Director Roseanne Liang nicely taps into the Euro thrillers of the early 80s.

Penguin Bloom. **. Apotentially compelling true-life drama is sunk due to an utterly by-the-numbers script, though director Glendyn Ivin does try to make it feel more involving than what it actually is.

The Marksman. ***. Predictable but surprisingly entertaining action/thriller is helped by a director who underplays the material. Its measured approach may disappoint those looking for non-stop action.

Wonder Woman 1984. **.

Bloated follow-up falls into every conceivable trap a sequel possibly can, resulting in a dull, overlong and empty misfire.

From Column At Left JOYEUX NOEL (Merry Christmas) [MA15+/2005]: The powerful and poignant true story of a now legendary incident during World War One when German, French and Scottish soldiers decided to risk being court martialled, or face the firing squad, by calling a truce on Christmas Eve and come together to celebrate the meaning of Christmas. Great cast, direction, writing and production design bring it together beautifully, this is not only a lesson in history and war, but an unforgettable viewing experience!

Stars: **** DIE HARD [M/1988]: If you're a bit fed up with the Christmas rush and stress, then go for Bruce Willis as New York cop John McClane who visits his wife at her work Christmas party only to be interrupted and taken hostage by a bunch of high profile crooks, and the thrills comes thick and fast. Not only the best action film of the 80s,' but one of the greatest action films of all time, Willis is a knockout in his star-making role, brimming with humour, tension and pyrotechnics, and Alan Rickman is a standout as the head villain, a knockout! Stars: **** A few other special recommendations include the epics The Ten Commandments (1956), Ben-Hur (1959), King of Kings (1961) with Jeffrey Hunter, and The Robe (1953) starring Richard Burton and Jean Simmons, the 1951 masterpiece Scrooge (also released as A Christmas Carol) starring Alastair Sim, Billy Wilder's Stalag 17 with William Holden in his Oscar winning role, The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992) with Michael Caine, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), the 1966 animated classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas narrated by the legendary Boris Karloff, Holiday Inn starring Big Crosby and Fred Astaire (1942), White Christmas (1954) with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney, and of course Home Alone with Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern (1990).

■ This small tin-shed distillery only opened in 2016, but James Young has already won back-to-back Distillery of the Year titles at one of Australia's most prestigious spirit competitions.

With that enviable title under his belt, the Perth local is about to see his lifelong dream become a reality: the opening of brand-new distillery in Gingin, and the launch of a world-class gin of the same calibre - one that earnt Old Young's the highest accolade possible at the Australian Distilled Spirit Awards in 2017 and 2018.

Big golf day for racing fraternity ■ The popular Epsom Golf Day isn't far away, the big day for the National Jockey Trust and the Woodlands Foundation Trust.

The extremely popular day will be on Monday March 22 at the Woodlands Golf Club in White St, Mordialloc.

Over the years the National Jockey Trust and the Woodlands Trust have put on a great show through their dynamo organise John Sweeney.

The day attracts a number of top golfers from near and far, especially among the jockey ranks andcompanies, who gather teams together for the big day on the picturesque course.

Among the jockeys participating on a regular basis are leading hoops Damien Oliver, Dwayne Dunn, Nash Rawiller, Jack Martin and Dylan Dunn.

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jye McNeil, will also be featuring along with Jason Benbow and Pat Trotter.

They will be joined by Dean Yendall, Patrick Moloney, along with former top hoops Gary Willetts and Simon Marshall.

Then there is Brent Thomson, who ruled the Cox Plate in his riding days.

They will be joined by the likes of former Hawthorn Football great Russell Morris, and former Chairman of the VRC, Rod Fitzroy.

Among some of the other well-known players will be former Racing Victoria Chief Steward, Des Gleeson, and current Racing Steward, Darren Triandafillou.

It is always a big day, prior to the golf getting underway, we cast our minds back to yesteryear and the glory days of the old Epsom Racecourse.

Once again, I will have the privilege of interviewing some of the racing folk connected with the old Epsom days.

We kick off the morning at around 10.30am, with our first guest leading young trainer, Clinton Mc Donald, whose mother, Margaret, was connected with the Hoysted clan, the likes of Fred Hoysted, Bon and Bob Hoysted.

Clinton has done well for a young trainer under the guidance of his father, the late Ross Mc Donald.

Then we will a chat with former top jockey, Gary Willietts, who won the Cox Plate on Battle Heights back in 1974.

His greatest thrill would have to be when he rode the champion Manikato, a winner of many classics, including five William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Then we will have a talk to Jason Swift, renowned grandson of the champion jockey Scobie Breasley. We will have a chat about the great man.

We will round off the interviews before the start of the golf at 12 Noon.

With the sad passing of Rob Gaylard, who compered our previous functions, Racing Victoria's racecaller, Matt Hill, will be in charge of proceedings on the day.

Inglis ready ■ Australia's leading thoroughbred auctioneers are keen to get the ball rolling for this year opening up with their big Yearling Sale at their magnificent sales complex at Oaklands Junction just opposite the Tullamarine Airport.

Action will get underway at their 2021 Premier Sale on Sunday February 28, commencing

at 10am, with lots 1 to 265 going under the hammer.

The following day Monday March 1, also will get underway at 10am - lots 266 to 530, up for sale, while the final day will be held on Tuesday Marchd, also getting underway at 10am Lots 531 to 590, to end the sales.

On Tuesday March 2, the Showcase Session will commence after the conclusion of the Premier Session, with Lots 591 to 804 up for sale.

Strong start for 2021 harness racing

■ Harness Racing Victoria's ‘Summer Of Glory’ is well under way with several provincial cups programmed.

Let's have a look at what's happended to date:

Harness Racing

Bendigo (Jan. 9)

■ The $70,000 (Group 2) Garrards Horse & Hound Bendigo Pacing Cup over 2650 metres saw exciting 5Y0 Rock N Roll Heaven-Lilac Stride gelding Wolf Stride victorious in a mile rate of 1-55.8 (last half mile 56 seconds - quarter 28).

Racing under the banner of E & M Stride (Emilio & Mary Rosati the breeders). Wolf Stride trained at Melton by driver Anthony Butt in partnership with finacee' Sonya Smith, after starting from the extreme draw settled at the rear of the field with Forty Thieves (gate 3) taking over from Somebeachsomeshadow (gate 2) shortly after the start.

Going forward three wide racing for the bell on the back of the well supported NSW hope Our Uncle Sam (one two), Wolf Stride was pushed four wide by Fourbigmen (one/one last lap) on the final bend, before unleashing a brilliant turn of speed on turning to record a 1.5 metre margin from Fourbigmen. Sirletic was third 1.5 metres away after following the winner home.

■ Andy and Kate Gath snared the $50,000 (Group 1) Aldebaran Park Maori Mile over the true 1609 metre trip with ex-Kiwi 8Y0 Monarchy-Winfield Invasion gelding McLovin who was outstanding in winning.

Driven by Kate, McLovin (gate 3) was eased to be five back along the markers, with Dance Craze from the pole leading out before allowing Red Hot Tooth outside her to stride past. Easing away from the inside to park exposed at the bell, McLovin kept on giving and giving in the run to the wire to gain a last stride victory by a head over Dance Craze along the sprint lane, with Red Hot Tooth weakening slightly to finish third 1.8 metres back.

Raced by major stable client Queensland developer Norm Jenkin, McLovin returned a mile rate of 1-54.2 (last quarter 27.6). It was McLovin's 26th success in 80 outings.

Cobram (Jan. 10)

■ It was Anthony Butt, Sonya Smith and the Rosati's again, when 4Y0 Bettors Delight-Chicago Blues entire Perfect Stride scored in the 2678 metre $35,000 (Group 3) Memorial Cobram Pacing Cup. With Anthony in the sulky, Perfect Stride starting from the extreme draw possied three back in the moving line to trail the second elect Malcolms Rhythm (one/two) from gate two on the second line after the hot favourite Western Sonador galloped prior to the start giving away around 30 metres.

Not given much respite, Bec Bartley sent Western Sonador forward mid-race to join the pacemaker Alpine Stride a stablemate of the winner. Crossing to assume control at the bell, Western Sonador facing a herculean task led into the straight with Malcolms Rhythm emerging and Perfect Stride still trailing.

Still in front halfway up the running, Western Sonador was nabbed by Malcolms Rhythm in the shadows of the post, with Perfect Stride flashing late to prevail by a head, with Western Sonator a certainty beaten a half head away in third place. The mile rate 1-56.7 (last half 56.3 quarter 28).

■ The $25,000 (Group 3) Central Murray Credit Union Cobram Trotters Cup over 2678 metres saw recent NZ import Havehorsewilltravel successful for Andy & Kate Gath and Norm Jenkin in a mile rate of 2-01.3 (last half 58.1 - quarter 28.4).

Jumping straight to the front from barrier two as the tapes released, Havehorsewilltravel a half brother to McLovin (Angus Hall) having his third start in OZ, ran along at his leisure and was never really in any danger, scoring by 1.7 metres over Well Defined which trailed not giving up the task. Scruffy Doolan after following the pair was a distant third 13.4 metres away.

Shepp. (Jan. 16)

■ The $60,000 (Group 2) Neatline Homes

Extricated away from the inside to be one/ one on the home turn, Stress Factor finished best to gain the day by a neck from Travel Bug which followed him most of the way before weaving in-between runners in the straight. Honest gelding Scruffy Doolan (one/one) was third 1.4 metres back after momentarily hitting the front on turning.

It was a great day for leviathan owner Fred Crews and wife Elizabeth, with Fred holding a share in Fourbigmen and Elizabeth a part-owner of Stress Factor.

Ballarat (Jan. 23)

■ An unbackable $1.04 favourite, Lochinvar Art raced by NSW based Kevin Gordon, led on his ear from the pole and was allowed to able around at his leisure. Running his last half mile in 54.9 (quarter 27.4) in defeating the David Aiken trained pair of Malcolms Rhythm along the sprint lane from three back the markers and Sirletic (one/one at bell - three wide home turn) who was 2 metres away third.

■ The other feature on the program was the $24,000 (Group 3) The George Gath for Trotters over 2190 metres from the mobile gate and it was Andy & Kate Gath's ever-reliable Kiwi bred 8Y0 Monarchy/Winfield Invasion gelding McLovin once again victorious.

Given time to balance from outside the front line as the start was effected, Kate allowed him to stride forward to park outside the poleline leader Kheiron within a lap. Dictating terms, McLovin did only what he had to do on turning to prevail by 3.4 metres over Sundons Courage (one/two at bell), with Kheiron weakening slightly to be third a neck away. The mile rate two minutes even (last half 56.9 - quarter 28.9).

■ It's interesting to note that McLovin's 5Y0 half brother Havehorsewilltravel (Angus Hall) scored earlier in the night bringing up four wins in Oz since arriving.

Hamilton (Jan. 17)

■ The $35,000 (Group 3) Matthews Petroleum Hamilton Pacing Cup over the short trip of 2160 metres went to 5Y0 Mach Three-Aleppo Heiress stallion Fourbigmen who was a deserved winner after three outstanding runs behind Lochinvar Art and Wolf Stride.

Trained by the Emma Stewart-Clayton Tonkin combination at Cardigan, Fourbigmen starting from gate four on the second line was driven by present Cups queen Kate Gath who wasted no time in sending him forward to park outside stablemate Struve (gate six) which had crossed noted sit/sprinter Kowalski Analysis (gate two) which led easily as the start was effected.

Applying plenty of pressure to the leader approaching the final bend, Fourbigmen asserted his authority on straightening to register a 5.2 metre margin in advance of Kowalski Analysis along the sprint lane, with Jilliby Lorenzo closing late for third a head away after trailing the runner up and easing wide to give chase on straightening. The mile rate 1-53.8 (last half 54.9 - quarter 27.5 which equalled Thats Perfect's record set in 2019.

■ The 2660 metre $14,000 Alexandra House Hamilton Trotters Cup which supplemented the program went to 6Y0 Kiwi bred 6Y0 Majestic Son-Fear Factor gelding Stress Factor for Bolinda trainer Brent Lilley and neighbour reinsman Chris Alford in a mile rate of 2-02.8.

Stepping cleanly from barrier five, Stress Factor first up since November received a cosy passage as dual last start winner Hanging Ona Dream pinged the tapes from barrier three to lead easily.

■ Victorian superstar Lochinvar Art added another cup to his impressive collection when victorious in the $100,000 (Group 1) PETStock Ballarat Pacing Cup over 2710 metres at Bray Raceway on Saturday January 23.

Trained and driven by Kialla's David Moran for NSW resident Kevin Gordon, the 5Y0 Modern Art-Ponder In Paris entire was dominant once again as he cruised to success in the season's feature event.

Not concerned after being trapped five wide as the mobile gate pulled away, Moran gradually crept forward to park Lochinvar Art outside the leader Out To Play (gate two) one of four runners from the Cardigan stable of Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin entering the straight on the first occasion.

With no moves being made in an even tempo affair, the field racing for the bell was Out To Play leading from Lochinvar Art in the open being trailed by Somewhere Secret, Better Be The Bomb, Wolf Stride, Jamieson Steele and Forty Thieves all in the moving line while Sicario, Always Fast, Kowalski Analysis and Fourbigmen occupied the inside division.

Moving effortlessly to join Out To Play on turning, Lochinvar Art ($1-04) asserted his authority in the straight to score by 6.4 metres from Out To Play ($29.60), with Wolf Stride ($14.90) running home late for third 4.7 metres back in advance of Somewhere Secret and Kowalski Analysis which used inside runs. The mile rate 1-57.7 (last half mile a sizzling 53.1 seconds quarter 26.4). was 2.9 seconds outside Smolda's 1-54.8 track record set in 2017.

■ The next step will be the $500,000 A.G. Hunter Cup at Tabcorp Park Melton this Saturday in which he will start a very short priced favourite depending on the draw.

■ The time honoured $30,000 (Group 2) E B Cochran Trotters Cup over 2200 metres supplemented the program with 7Y0 Tennotrump-Free Rider gelding Magicool recording a thrilling victory for veteran Toolern Vale trainer Rob O'Connell.

Driven by Zac Phillips who grew up around the O'Connell stables which were situated in Ascot Vale at the time, Magicool was fast to begin from gate five to lead crossing Sundons Courage inside him on the first turn leaving the favourite Red Hot Tooth (gate six) momentarily exposed.

Taking over shortly after, Red Hot Tooth the $2.70 favourite was allowed to set a moderate tempo throughout, looking to have the race at her mercy.

When Red Hot Tooth shifted ground in the straight, Phillips seized the opportunity to drive Magicool ($6.40) through a narrow opening inside her to gain the day by a head in a rate of 159.7. Monaro Mara ($23.00) was a game third 4.9 metres back after racing in the open.

That wasn't the end however as Kerryn Manning (Red Hot Tooth) lodged a protest against the winner for striking the pegs approaching the finish. This was subsequently dismissed.

Last Week

■ Tthe highlight of the afternoon at Stawell on Monday January 25 was the victory of 5Y0 Courage Under Fire-Lombo Socialite gelding Glenavril King which gave champion reinswoman Kerryn Manning her 4000th winner in the sulky.

Enjoying a cosy passage from inside the second line trailing the poleline leader Our Georgia Rose, Glenavril King was slightly held up on the final bend as the pacemaker started to give ground, but with Kerryn waiting patiently for the sprint lane to come into play, Glenavril King sprinted like a gazelle to register a 3.2 metre margin over Image Of Starzzz which trailed John Richard forward three wide in the last lap.

Jackierabbit was third 1.4 metres away after following the winner throughout. The mile rate 1-58.9.

Mildura memo

■ Mildura raced on Tuesday and last season's prolific winning Kiwi bred 8Y0 Rock N Roll Heaven-Dolly McD gelding Bernie Winkle chalked up his 38th success at start 201 by taking the $20,000 Tasco Petroleum Australia Day Pace over 1790 metres.

Raced by Eric and Heather Anderson, Bernie Winkle driven by Ellen Tormey settled near last in the moving line from the extreme draw as stablemate Ozzie Battler led from gate three.

Bernie Winkle sprinted sharply in the last lap to join the leader on turning before drawing clear in the shadows of the post to register a metre margin over the leader who was courageous in defeat. Rocknroll Eyes back in Sunraysia after a stint with the Douglas stable was third 12.5 metres back after racing exposed. The mile rate 1-56 (last half 56.7 - quarter 28.6) was 1.3 seconds outside Beachstar's track record set in 2016.

■ Young Melbourne based Jack Laugher has been on fire in recent weeks, especially at Mildura and brought up another quartet of winners - Bo Carson for local Irymple trainer Laurie Callick along with White Star Village (Reece Moore - Irymple), Pocket The Deal (Julie Douglas - Strathfieldsaye) and The Tooth Fairy (Rick Holmes (Red Cliffs).

Double Day

■ Two meetings were held on Wednesday Tabcorp Park Melton in the afternoon and Bendigo at night.

■ Dunnstown's David Murphy took both the training and driving honours at Melton with a double - 5Y0 Yankee Spider-Motu Vee mare Fox Force Five leading throughout in the 2240 metre DNR Logistics Trotters Handicap and 4Y0 Shadow Play-Tessanover entire Royal Apollo doing the same in the Allies Express Maiden Pace over 1720 metres.

■ Shepparton (Arcadia) trainer Steven Duffy produced an impressive first starter by the name of Hot Wire to land the Menzclub Maiden Pace over 1720 metres. A 4Y0 daughter of Village Jolt and Hot To Trot Lombo raced and bred by Mario Ciriillo, Hot Wire driven by son Ryan was taken back from outside the front line at the start to settle mid-field in the moving line as the well supported Cmonbabylitemyfire led from gate four.

Following a shuffle for spots, Hot Wire found herself one/one racing for the bell and when eased three wide on the final bend, ran home stylishly to prevail by 10.8 metres over the pacemaker returning a mile rate of 1-58.6. Jannali was 1.5 metres back off a mid-field trip.
