Split vote on directors

■ Cr Liam Hughes and Steven Hughes voted against Frankston City’s move to appoint Julie Busch, Marlene Elliott as a Non-Executive Director and Chair of Peninsula Pty Ltd for a period of three years, with the appointment expiring on January 31, 2024.

Phil Cantillon’s role as Interim Director and Chair was concluded. Kim Jaensch’s role from Interim Director to NonExecutive Director is on an provisional basis.

Protect view lines ■ Cr David Gill has come up with a challenge for Mornington Peninsula Council staff to ome up with a solution to halt and remedy the loss of iconic and other view lines on the Peninsula, due in part to planting of hedge rows.

“This problem has not been given the serious attention that it deserves,” says Shire staff member Katanya Barlow (Manager – Strategic Planning) in a report to Councillors.

South-East on high COVID alert ■ RESIDENTS across Melbourne’s South-East, including Greater Dandenong, Casey, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula, are on high alert for COVID-19 after an active case was reported.

Local ‘Tier One’ public exposure sites include Brandon Park, Clayton South, Heatherton, Keysborough, Moorabbin Aiprort, Noble Park and Springvale.

$10.4m for Casey roads

■ The City of Casey is to receive $10.4 million more than expected for local roads.

One project is rebuilding the much-loved Tooradin Footbridge, which was closed in 2017 due to safety concerns over the decay of timber.

The other two projects are resealing Manks Rd in Clyde and completing the upgrade of the Council-owned Berwick Bowls Club, says Casey Council Chair Noelene Duff.

The Department of Health and Human Services is continuing to follow up close contacts of a hotel quarantine worker at the Grand Hyatt Hotel who tested positive to Coronavirus on Wednesday last week (Feb. 3).

Tens of thousands of Melburnians have since queued for COVID tests. There had been no further positive cases, when The Local Paper went to press.

As at Saturday (Feb. 6), 362 primary close contacts have been identified in connection with these exposure sites. This number is expected to increase over coming days.

First Nations names for Peninsula places ■ Cr David Gill is proposing to this week’s Mornington Peninsula Shire meeting that it be a priority to use Mornington Peninsula First People’s language place names at every new opportunity and review opportunities to use dual names with an aim to have every cultural heritage site recognised with an historic cultural name within two years.

Cr Gill is presenting his idea to the Council meeting due to be held on Tuesday (Feb. 9) as this edition of The Local Paper goes to press.

Cr Gill is moving that Council encourages and recommends private place naming, for example, by the development industry to use First People’s historic names.

He suggests that Council also looks to the planning scheme and any other relevant regulations or local laws to help ensure an increase in recognition of such place naming.

Cr Gill is proposing that the Bunurong Land Council covering the Mornington Peninsula and any local First People’s groups including the Boon Wurrung Foundation be informed of this additional emphasis and that Council works with these groups to bring about a rapid increase in First People’s language names on the Mornington Peninsula.

One of the Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan actions is to seek to investigate indigenous language names (and dual place names) on the Mornington Peninsula.

“There is a need for more name changes to occur in support of the plan,” says a report to Council.

“This motion seeks to place emphasis on ensuring recognition of Aboriginal culture through place

Local People Tribute to Pauline

■ Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Cr Despi O’Connor is this week paying tribute to the life of Pauline Powell.

“On behalf of my Councillor colleagues, Mornington Peninsula Shire staff and the broader community, I would like to pay my respects to a stalwart of the Rye community, Pauline Powell OAM,” said Cr O’Connor.

“Pauline was born in Murrumbeena in 1933. She trained as a pharmacist and in 1958 - at the age of 25 - became the community pharmacist at Rye, a role she continued until retirement in 1994.

“Within a year of arriving on the Mornington Peninsula, Pauline began what was to become a lifetime of community service - starting with the Rye Preschool and Infant Welfare Centre, where she served as President, Secretary, Treasurer and Trustee.

“It is no exaggeration to say the list of organisations and community projects Pauline was involved in is too long to read out.

“Her lifelong interest in history and heritage lead her to become founding President of Rye Historical Society.

“She spent many years on the Shire of Flinders Heritage Week Committee and chaired the Rye-Tootgarook area committee for Victoria’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

“She was also a founding member of the Rye Tennis Club - and during the 1960s was ladies singles champion five years in a row.

“She had a long association with the Portsea Golf Club, beginning in 1962. She served in several roles and in 2001 coauthored a book about the club’s history.

“In 1977, Pauline became founding President of the Rye Lioness Club and during the 1980s and early 90s was active in the Rye Chamber of Commerce, initiating the Rye Week Festival and Flag Design Competition.

“The list goes on and includes volunteer roles with Peninsula Health, Rye Community GroupAlliance and Rye Primary School.

“It is fitting, therefore, that in 2005 Pauline was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her services to the community of Rye. “We take this opportunity to thank Pauline for her leadership, hard work, selflessness and commitment to our community. We owe her a debt of gratitude.

“She helped make Rye the thriving community it is today and will be greatly missed.

We also extend our condolences to her children Janice, Andrew and Margie and grandchildren Jarrod, Vicki and Callum. Vale, Pauline Powell.”

Objection to bikes

The Mornington Peninsula Shire has a rich Aboriginal history with the Bunurong/Boon Wurrung language deeply rooted to the land, which provides an ideal opportunity to connect a name to a place.

Dual names would be formally registered and are to be used in full, particularly on maps, signs and legal documents.

Examples of potential naming where there is an existing name and an identified historical Aboriginal name could be: Arthurs Seat/ Wonga or Point Nepean/ Monmar.

“Identifying or uncovering the historical Aboriginal names for every cultural site across the Mornington Peninsula is a big piece of work and we will never get a comprehensive list due to the loss of language, storylines etc.”

■ A joint letter with 11 signatories from local environmental groups has been received

by Mornington Peninsula Shire.

The letter xpressesdeep concerns about the environmental impact of the proposed shared bike path beside the Moorooduc to Mornington railway line.

The letter writers state that the narrow corridor hosts the best remnants of significant vegetation communities which are now depleted and rare in Victoria, as well as individual species which are state and federally listed as threatened.

“This joint letter has been included as a submission in the process for identification of potential route options for the Moorooduc to Mornington section of the Bay Trail,” says a report to Councillors.

“Council is undergoing a detailed review of all submissions. Once this has been completed all groups who submitted suggestions and comments including the groups represented by this joint letter will be invited to a meeting to discuss the submissions and planning work Council has completed so far and Council’s next steps.

Greater Dandenong’s Reuse and Recycle Drop Off Day event scheduled for last Saturday (Feb. 6) was postponed, due to the current COVID-19 exposure sites in the South-East.

A report to this week’s Mornington Peninsula Council meeting says that “only a few” traders supported the closure of Main St, Mornington.

These were mainly food businesses. “The response from other traders was mixed: they were either indifferent or opposed to closing the top end of Main St.” Prior to this in 2020, when the Shire had called for expressions of interest regarding extended outdoor dining and parklets in Mornington, there was little or no interest in parklets from traders at the top end of Main St. Subsequently, and after consulting with officers in the Parklets and Traffic teams, our assessment is that there is not enough trader demand to warrant the closure of the top end of Main St. There are only a small number of food businesses which could take advantage of a closure, the predominant business mix is retail and real estate and there is general disinterest from many traders.”

Frankston Council has voted that the Waterfront Festival be moved to March 2021, and the name changed to ‘Live & Local @ the Waterfront’ for the 2021 year only, Frankston Council has voted to pay the maximum permissable allowance of $100,434 to the Mayor, and $31,444 to each Councillor.

The City of Casey has revised its position on a 133 hectare parcel of land at Hall Road and Westernport Highway in Cranbourne West to ensure it is retained as an employment precinct for the future.

Scam hits Dandenong Cl. ■ The City of Greater Dandenong says there is a phone scam involving someone posing as an employee of the Council or other councils.

“We urge people to conduct the appropriate security checks when someone phones claiming to be from Council and never give out personal information over the phone, especially to people have have called you unverified,” said a Council representative.

The Council, led by Chief Executive Officer John Bennie, is inviting residents to contact the municipality if affected.

“You can find out more about scams and how to protect yourself from scammers through Consumer Affairs,” the Council said.

Arthurs Seat quarry row ■ David Morris, Mornington MLA, spoke last week in State Parliament about the possibility of a new quarry at Arthurs Seat.

“Eleven months ago I alerted the house to a proposal to develop a huge new quarry on the slopes of Arthurs Seat,” Mr Morris said.

“The proposal is to extract 70 million tonnes of granite from this highly visible site, and if the quarry proceeds it will simply create an enormous scar— an enormous pit that will scar the landscape forever.

“This is not the first major industrial project we have seen in this green wedge precinct.

“Some years ago a rubbish tip was proposed. The LiberalNationals Government of the day rightly rejected the application out of hand.

“It was totally inappropriate for this site, and that is exactly what should have happened

“Instead he sidelined the local council and ordered an environment effects statement to be prepared, but the local community has made its views very clear.

“And who was there to defend the government’s decision? Absolutely no-one.

“The member for Nepean was nowhere to be seen, despite being invited.

“In fact he must have been very, very silent on the issue or ignored the issue not to have heard about it, because the advice was everywhere.

● Mornington Peninsula Shire Councillors were ‘updated’ on the results of the public consultation process for the re-naming of Blacks Camp Reserve and Blacks Camp Pre-school in Somerville.

■ A one-off collection of unwated goods is being held throughout the City of Greater Dandenong until February 20.

“Homecycle gives residents the chance to take part in a free one-off collection of smaller items that can be reused and recycled but are not normally included in the regular kerbside recycling bin,” said a Council representative.

“This is an easy and cost-effective way to reduce landfill and give items a new life.

Collection swill be the day after the normal recycling bin is emptied.

Registrations are not required to participate in the Homecycle collection program.

‘Re-open Main St’ ■ A joint letter with 16 signatures has been received by Mornington Pneinsula Shire from businesses in Main St, Mornington from Barkly St to Eastern Ring Rd. The letter requests the section of Main St, Mornington from Esplanade to Barkly St which was closed prior to Christmas re-open until Christmas holidays.

The letter suggests that the section from Esplanade to Eastern Ring Road be closed until the end of the Christmas school holidays.

“The letter writers feel it is unfair for those businesses not included in the partial Main St road closure and suggest that whenever Main St is closed for any event it should include the whole of Main St (Esplanade to Eastern Ring Road),” a report to Council says.

Plastic roads at Tootgarook ■ Mornington Peninsula Shire is trialling a new material for footpaths and will be recycling plastics into roads.

The much-anticipated road upgrade at Wilkinson St and Carmichael St in Tootgarook is being constructed with Plastiphalt – an asphalt product using recycled waste plastic.

“With 340 tonnes of asphalt being laid, the road will contain approximately 1,200kg of plastic or 430,000 plastic bags,” said Cr Hugh Fraser of Nepean Ward.

“The footpath at Wilkinson St and Carmichael St will see soft plastics directly under our feet.

“This innovative use of materials will reduce the Shire’s dependence on the use of extractive materials quarried from environmentally sensitive places.”

Cr Sarah Race said: “The production of standard concrete produces a significant amount of greenhouse gases, by replacing 5 per cent of the rock used in the concrete with recycled plastic we’re reducing the energy required to build the footpath, as well as diverting 700kg (175,000 plastic packages) of plastic from landfill.”

Mayor Cr Despi O’Connor said: “Not only does this provide a market for plastic otherwise sent to landfill, it also adds performance ben-

Vale Margaret Crittenden ■ Mornington Peninsula Mayor Cr Despi O’Connor is this week paying tribute to Margaret Crittenden who died late last year.

“On behalf of my Councillor colleagues, Mornington Peninsula Shire staff and the broader community, I would like to pay my respects to a pioneer of the Mornington Peninsula’s wine industry, Margaret Crittenden.

“Marg, as she was known, was born at East Melbourne in 1942 and began her working life as a nurse, going on to work in a pathology lab in Frankston.

“After her marriage to Garry Crittenden in 1972, the couple settled in Frankston to be close to both her work and Garry’s thriving plant nursery in Mount Eliza.

“It was a chance meeting with a Tasmanian wine producer that prompted the couple to purchase a property in Dromana and - in September 1982 - plant their first five acres of vines.

“This doubled the total area of land devoted to vines on the Mornington Peninsula at that time.

“Marg was both a leader and an innovator.

In the summer of 1988 - on a whim - she decided to set up a trestle table and cash box at the

“Over the course of her life, Marg made an immense and lasting contribution to the Mornington Peninsula’s wine, food and tourism industries.

■ Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a multi-vehicle collision in Pakenham South which has sadly claimed the lives of two people.

Investigators believe a white utility collided head-on with a silver SUV on Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Rd about 8am on Thursday (Feb. 4).

The female driver of the SUV sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

Tragically, the 34-year-old Koo Wee Rup woman and her unborn child have since died.

Her two passengers, both young children, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospital as a precaution.

The male sole occupant of the utility was also airlifted to hospital and remains in a critical condition.

Investigators have been told the white utility collided with several other vehicles prior to the head-on collision, causing minor damage to those vehicles.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and it remains ongoing.

$60,000 forest

■ Frankston Council has allocated a further $60,000 to implement its Urban Forest Action Plan.

Centre opens ■ The newly built Cranbourne West Community Hub was officially opened on January 27. It will provide the local community with a range of services and programs that promote community connectedness and address social isolation.

Located at 4s Flicka Boulevard in Cranbourne West, the state-of-the-art dual level community facility hosts flexible and shared multi-use spaces for community members to connect, belong, learn and play.

Transport to 2050 ■ Mornington Peninsula Shire Councillors were late last year briefed on the development of an Integrated Transport Strategy for the Peninsula and their feedback was sought on the approach to consulting community and stakeholders in 2021.

Rosebud stabbing: 2 arrests ■ Police have arrested two men following an alleged stabbing in Rosebud on Thursday night (Feb. 4).

Investigators have been told the victim, a 28year-old Rye male, was sitting in a vehicle along Rosebud Pde just after 11pm when he was flagged down by two males.

The victim exited his car and a verbal altercation took place before he was allegedly stabbed multiple times to the upper body.

The victim then ran to a nearby licensed venue along Eastbourne Rd, before the two men fled the scene.

The victim was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Police later located and arrested a 24-yearold Capel Sound man and a 23-year-old Tootgarook man.

Both men were interviewed and released pending further enquiries.

Investigations are ongoing and detectives urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Balcombe findings ■ Preliminary findings of the draft Balcombe Estuary Reserves: Ecological and Planning Study were presented to Mornington Peninsula Shire Councillors late last year, prior to community consultation in 2021.

Peninsula meetings re-open 31 sign petition

■ A petition regarding a request for Frankston City Council to investigate the practice of Burdettes Sand and Soil and LP Cranes, was received at the January 27 meeting.

The petition contained 31 signatures.

Permit granted

■ Frankston Council has granted a permit for 3A Shannon Street Mall Frankston to be used for the sale and consumption of liquor (on-premise Licence) and to reduce the number of car parking spaces required

■ Mornington Peninsula Shire has announced that the publics will once again be able to attend Council Meetings and Planning Services Committee Meetings.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Shire temporarily changed its metings to online only in April last year.

The meetings will now be held at the Peninsula Community Theatre in Mornington from 6.30pm.

First Council Meeting to be open to the public was last night (Tues., Feb. 9).

The first Planning Services Committee Meeting open to the public will be on Tuesday, March 9.

Capacity for community members will be limited to approximately 50 people.

People attending a meeting are required to complete a symptom self-assessment prior to leaving home and not attend

if they are are unwell or have been instructed to isolate or quarantine.

‘Take-away’ at Narre ■ Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for information following a burglary at a Narre Warren fast food outlet.

Investigators have been told two men drove a silver Volvo sedan, bearing false registration plates YLR-443, to the restaurant on Princes Highway about 7am on January 15.

The pair exited their car and broke into the store through a rear service door.

Once inside they stole cash before returning to their vehicle and leaving.

One of the offenders is perceived to be Caucasian, 180 centimetres tall with a medium build and short dark hair.

The other offender is perceived to be of African appearance, 160 centimetres tall with a slim build and wearing a BLVK cap.

Investigators have released images of the men that may be able to assist with their enquires. ● Frankston City Council received a Certificate of Appreciation from Frankston Life for its support of the 2020 Christmas Day Lunch. Deputy Mayor, Cr Nathan Conroy acknowledged receipt of the certificate.

What’s On Lunar New Year ■ QV Melbourne welcomes The Year of the Ox with Lunar New Year celebrations including a 50m2 interactive mural from Chinese-Australian artist Mark Chu, a new exhibition of his work at No Vacancy gallery, custom made Oxen lanterns, themed food and drink, $10,000 in prizes and more from February 12.

Lunar New Year (LNY), celebrated by 1.5 billion people in 2020, provides the chance for a fresh start, setting the tone for the year ahead. The celebrations begin when the first new moon in the lunar calendar emerges on February 12, 2021.

At 50m2, Mark’s Lunar New Year mural is one of his biggest works to date, towering over passers-by in Jane Bell Lane, just off Russell St. The Giving Ox depicts an Ox leaping up in a moment of joy, signifying the massive strength for which the zodiac year is known. It is also interactive, with an AR animation bringing the mural to life with a burst of generosity, symbols and LNY celebrations.

Shoppers can also find their personalised 2021 Chinese Zodiac predictions linked to a QR Code.

At resident gallery No Vacancy, Mark Chu will exhibit 50 paintings in a major new show entitled The Ecstasy of People Watching, opening February 25 until February 28 . His works ask, how do we gaze differently in this paradoxical time of social distancing and hyper-interconnectivity?

As a part of the Lunar New Year experience, Chu has created his first sculptural work, a bronze cast of an ox tail coated in 24carat gold, called a Giving Charm. This valuable work will be priced at zero dollars; however its acquirer will receive instructions from the artist to embrace a life of generosity as fully as possible, and pass it on to a new acquirer when they no longer need to engage with the piece.

Victorian Arts Linden Gallery ■ Ash Keating presents Quality: Following a year of creative experimentation and marking a major transition in technique, leading mid-career Melbourne based artist Ash Keating's new series expands the physical and psychological complexity of his work.

The exhibition includes four very large canvases and a series of eight smaller domestically scaled paintings. These stunning new works have been formed by the application and manipulation of countless layers of media, including pigments, perlite, mica flakes, paint and water. The process f building and paring back has involved an eclectic set of equipment such as seed sprayers, leaf blowers, wire brush, electric sanders, vacuums and Stanley knives.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a public art project commissioned by the City of Port Phillip.

Confidential Talk is cheap, gossip is priceless

Bored Artists of Melbourne ■ As an offshoot of the Fourth Wall Theatre Company, BAM (Bored Artists of Melbourne) achieved their prime objectives of airing off the theatrical cobwebs and providing a forum for actors to write and perform with an open air cavalcade of monologues.

That Fourth Wall first formed in February of 2020 can only be called bad theatrical timing but artists are nothing less than resilient.

There are not enough column inches to detail the names and titles of all the 13 pieces performed at the Princes Park Bowls Club on a late Sunday afternoon. Those that chose to write and perform their own monologues must be commended.

Here was an opportunity to test one’s skills before an audience. What stood out, however, were those pieces written specifically for the stage. They had form and structure and were self-contained. Monologues taken from films tend to lack the contextualisation needed for a full appreciation.

The one true comedic monologue, Lovesick, written by Gabriel David and performed by Samuel Howard teased the audience with its use of language.

Who has ever heard of emetophobia – the fear of throwing up? We are simultaneously revolted and intrigued. Beautifully structured, the piece returned to that theme as a hapless male seeks to ask his girlfriend’s father for her hand in marriage.

There’s a hint of Chekov’s farce, The Proposal, here. The classic Bob Newhart monologue, The Driving Instructor, capably performed by John Jennings also stood out.

The evolution of the lesson as it unravels provides the continuity while the nuance of delivery builds the comedy. These were true stand alone pieces with the requisite form and structure.

There are lessons here about what truly constitutes theatre, how material suits particular forums and the skills artists require as they move between genres. The essential foundation of how pieces are written and how this contributes to the overall appreciation of a performance is highlighted as well.

The Fourth Wall Theatre Company are back having never really been absent – their materialization more delayed than anything else.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert ■ When COVID-19 shut the Cardinia Performing Arts Company (CPAC) down in its tracks in early March 2020, the company did not stop continuing to do what they love.

They kept rehearsing via digital technologies and worked tirelessly during lock down to finish over 200 spectacular costumes, and styling the 100 wigs that will now grace the stage in April 2021 as part of Midsumma Festival, in this Victorian amateur premiere of Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical.

In 1994 an independent Aussie film about two drag queens and a transsexual woman on a road trip travelling across the desert from Sydney to the Alice to London’s West End, Broadway now to Pakenham in 2021.

With fun, friendship and discovery along the way, Priscilla addresses homophobia and transphobia in the wider Australian community in the late 1990s and the overall need for equality and acceptance in society.

Under the creative direction of Scott Hili, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is the first show in the 20-year celebration.

Scott says: "Stephen Elliot's Priscilla still stands apart as a home grown Australian musical and the Australian drag scene of the 1990s.

With our non-replica original production of this

typical fish-out-of-water tale, we continue to address LGBTQIAP+ concerns in Australian society using the arts to education on these values."

Wild Things ■ Documentary maker Sally Ingleton followed a year in the life of activists campaigning against the Adani mine in Queensland, deforestation in North West Tasmania, and the Schools Strike 4 Climate movement in Victoria, to make her new film, Wild Things.

It is compelling viewing to see everyday people trying to make a difference, and for Ingleton, she hopes the documentary will inspire people to join an environment group and get involved.

While the message is activists are normal, everyday people, the campaign leaders and subjects of the documentary are far from ‘everyday’ – they are extraordinary and heroic, in action and drive.

Dr Lisa Searle spends part of the year scaling tall trees to stop deforestation of the beautiful Tasmanian Tarkine rainforest, where logging began in the 1960s and continues today.

Then there is Harriet O’Shea Carre and Milou Albrecht, driven and passionate young teenagers who started their environmental activism protesting against the Adani coal mine from their hometown in Victoria's Castlemaine.

Inspired by Greta Thunberg they organised a series of strikes culminating in the School Strike 4 Climate that attracted thousands of students on September 20, 2019, and even the attention of Scott Morrison - sadly he was not supportive.

At Camp Binbee in central Queensland, activist Andy Paine directs non-violent campaigns disrupting construction and sending clear messages about the environmental impact this 14 billion dollar project will have – it’s a monumental battle, driven by volunteers who want “to protect the environment for our children and our grandchildren”.

Activists cop abuse from those whose livelihoods are at stake, and there is an inherent danger in standing in front of a B-double or chaining yourself to a bulldozer. Ultimately however, the blockades and protests are peaceful. They are there to disrupt, raise awareness and encourage more people to take action. When confronted by police to move or be arrested, most pack up for the day and prepare to return tomorrow.

Wild Things was a labour of love for Ingleton, who for 10 years wanted to make a film about Australia’s environment movement and shine a light on those who are doing their bit.

Since 2000, Ingleton has been making documentaries about environmental issues however this is her first full-length feature cinema release. Ingleton said the decision was based on the dramatic change of style in TV documentaries over the past decade that was now series based with a celebrity narrator. Cinema she said, “is also a great way to be fully immersed in the story”.

Wild Things indeed should be compulsory viewing, including for our politicians. And if you ever wondered if you could make a difference, the answer is a resounding yes – watch, learn, and be inspired.

Observations Red Stitch Theatre ■ Red Stitch Actors' Theatre presents Single Ladies written by Michele Lee and directed

Single Ladies tells of three lone women told over the course of one day.

Set in the sanitised grunge of Collingwood, Anne, Lilike and Rachel are from different generations and backgrounds and hold different allegiances to their neighbourhood but a chance happening outside the local Coles sets them on the path to an unlikely friendship.

Single Ladies was developed through Red Stitch’s unique INK playwriting program and was in its first week of previews in March 2020 when it had to close due to COVID-19 restrictions.

During lockdown, Michele developed a series of short audio works based on the three characters from Single Ladies. As an introduction to the three characters, the monologues created during COVID-19 can be found at www.redstitch.net.

The INK playwriting program plays a vital role in the Australian theatre landscape, developing and producing new Australian plays, and nurturing works to their fullest potential.

Single Ladies is presented by an entirely female team. ● Val Sartori Photo: Gail Armstrong ■ Val Sartori, one of the Strathmore Theatrical Arts Group’s longest-serving members, has retired. STAG has presented live theatre in Melbourne for more than 60 years.

Val's contribution to STAG over the years has included working in many areas.

She has helped with costumes, made sandwiches for special events, worked frontof-house, and for decades was the company’s secretary and treasurer. Not many companies have one person doing both jobs.

STAG decided to present a special award to thank Val and acknowledge her outstanding contribution to community theatre.

■ COVID-19 injections are now being distributed around America and there are long lines of people in cars, waiting to be injected.

It is the best efficient way to get these much needed injections quickly around the country. Scenes of long lines of cars filing into Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles was shown on KTLA, the local television station and here in Australia on Channel 9.

One of those cars was owned by Channel 9 overseas correspondent Robert Penfold and his wife Shar who became vaccination chasers. His report on Channel 9 was a great insight into the dilemma that the States finds itself in.

Robert was at my farewell at the Sunset Marquee and did a live interview with me in front of my 20 LA mates. With the pandemic, I am caught between Australia and the west coast of America. Hopefully I will get back to the US when the international planes get back in the air.

Support animals banned ■ Alaska Airlines will soon ban emotional support animals from flights, becoming the first major US airline to do so after the Department of Transportation revised its regulations earlier this month about what constitutes a service animal.

Alaska will only allow service dogs, which it defined as dogs that are " specially trained to perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability," including psychiatric service dogs, the airline said in a news release.

Passengers with emotional support animals with reservations booked prior to January 11 will still be allowed to fly, but no exceptions will be made after February 28.

The DOT announced late last year its revised Air Carrier Access Act would no longer classify emotional support animals as service animals, which are allowed to fly with passengers on commercial airlines under federal law.

St Louis murderous year ■ St Louis, Missouri, closed out 2020 with its highest homicide rate in five decades. The city recorded 267 slayings last year, or 87 per 100,000 residents; the last time it was that high was 1970. The St Louis Post-Dispatch notes that the homicide rate has risen each year for the last six but that experts think the various stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic fuelled an even bigger surge. "St.Louis sees a similar spike that we saw elsewhere, but what's different is its starting level was already so high," Richard Rosenfeld, a criminology professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, told the paper.

50 new billionaires ■ According to Forbes, there were 50 new billionaires, scientists, researchers, and doctors, in the healthcare sector this year.

The majority of these billionaires are from China, the site of the COVID-19 outbreak and home to more than 30 new members.

Here are other notable members: The team behind Pfizer's vaccine: Ugur Sahin (net worth, $4.2billion), a Turkish physician founded Germany-based BioNTech in 2008 with his wife, Özlem Türeci, the company's chief medical doctor. The team partnered with Pfizer on a vaccine.

The Moderna team: Three billionaires were minted from the other major vaccine. Stéphane Bancel ($4.1billion) is the CEO, while Timothy Springer ($2.0billion) and Robert Langer ($1.5billion) are professors at Harvard and MIT, respectively, who both made early investments in Moderna.

The vial maker: Stevanato Group is "the world's secondlargest producer of glass vials and a prominent supplier of vials for more than 40 COVID-19 vaccines." Its president, Sergio Stevanato, is worth $1.8billion.

The lab man: From antibody tests to vaccine trials, Cincinnati-based Medspace does it all. Its founder and CEO, August Troendle, is worth $1.3billion.

Vitamin D-deficient ■ Recent research Trusted Source discovered a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and a higher risk of COVID-19.

Now, another new study has found the same noting that more than 80 per cent of people with COVID-19 didn't have adequate levels of the "sunshine vitamin" in their blood.

As part of the new study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, researchers looked at 216 COVID-19 patients in a hospital in Spain.

The scientists matched the patients to controls from another dataset. Of all the patients, 82.2 percent were deficient in vitamin D.

■ The number of San Francisco residents who have died from drug overdoses during the past year far exceeds the number who have died from COVID-19.

A record high number of 621 people died from overdoses in 2020 compared to the 173 who have died from COVID-19.

In 2019, 441 people died from drug overdoses in the city, which gives 2020 the grim distinction of having experienced a staggering increase of more than 40 per cent. The overdose statistics of 2019 were a 70 per cent increase from those in 2018. "The data reflects the number of times people report using Narcan to the Drug Overdose Prevention and Education Project, a city-funded program that coordinates San Francisco's response to overdose, or return to refill their supply," the AP reported, referencing the medicine used to reverse opioid overdoses. "Officials at the DOPE Project said that since the numbers are self-reported, they are probably a major undercount."

The overdoses afflict every part of San Francisco, which remains under a strict stay-at-home order, though nearly 40 per ecnt of the deaths were in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighbourhoods, and many took place in low-income apartments and city-funded hotel rooms for homeless people.

Prediction from Bill Gates ■ Bill Gates has offered his prediction for when the coronavirus pandemic will finally be over. The billionaire Microsoft founder has made a number of guesses about key events of the global health crisis that has brought the world to a standstill, most of which have been proven correct. Sadly he doesn't think we'll be completely back to normal until halfway through 2022, although he believes things could start resuming in some countries over the spring of 2021. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced it is committing a further $250 million to "support the research, development, and equitable delivery of lifesaving tools" in the fight against COVID-19.

It brings the charity's total contributions to the pandemic to $1.75 billion. Gates says the recent ground breaking developments in vaccines are a good sign that the end of the pandemic could be in sight, but it will be some time until the entire world sees its benefits. "By the summer of 2021, the rich countries will have more vaccine coverage than other countries," he said. "So, the rich countries will be going mostly back to normal. But I still think because the virus will be in the world, we still will be somewhat conservative about large public events, we will still have some mask-wearing.”

■ Two months into fiscal 2021, the Federal Government has spent nearly twice as much money as it has taken in through revenue after posting a 14th consecutive month of deficit spending.

According to the Treasury Department spending data, the federal government ran a $145 billion deficit in November, driven heavily by spending on Social Security benefits, health care and national defence.

Combined with October's $284 billion deficit, the federal government has spent $887 billion in fiscal 2021nearly twice the $457 billion it has captured thus far through taxes and other forms of revenue.

The government's deficit spending follows a record-breaking fiscal 2020, wherein agencies combined to spend a record $6.5 trillion, with a total deficit of $3.1 trillion. A sizable portion of spending in late fiscal 2020 was driven by spending on coronavirus relief packages and some decreases in collected revenue. Congress is currently considering another COVID19 relief bill worth more than $900 billion.

■ Pat Boone had his first hit song in 1955 and became a popular singer in Australia.

During his career he had 38 top forty hits and starred in more than 12films.

Pat Boone was born in Florida in 1934. The family moved to Nashville when Pat was two years old and he grew up there.

His family were very religious. Pat attended the Lipscomb high school and university.

In 1953 he married Shirley Lee Foley, daughter of country music great Red Foley and singer Judy Martin.

Pat pursued a singing career and in 1955 recorded a cover of Ain't That a Shame which became a hit song.

He attracted attention because he was a white singer recording covers of Afro-American Rhythm and Blues songs.

Pat appeared on television shows such as Dick Clarke's Bandstand and quickly became a national singing star.

His hit songs included Friendly Persuasion, Bernadine, April Love, Love Letters in the Sand and Wonderful Time Up There.

I liked him because he was clean cut, honest and I loved his songs. In the 1950s his films included Bernadine, April Love, Mardi Gras and Journey to the Centre of The Earth.

I can still remember seeing him in April Love at the Grand Picture Theatre in Coburg and all the publicity about his first screen kiss with Shirley Jones.

In the 1960s Pat Boone continued to have successful hit songs with Moody River, Johnny Will and Speedy Gonzales.

But the British Invasion of The Beatles in America during 1964 marked the end of the popularity of Pat Boone and many other American singing stars of that time.

The style of music has changed many times since then but we still have our memories of the music we enjoyed.

■ After 30 years as a regular presenter Dr Sally Cockburn has parted ways with 3AW. Dr Sally, aka Dr Feelgood has already had her talk back time replaced.

In fairness to 3AW management they do cater for their elderly audience with an ample supply of medical advice including a doctor (from Sydney) and almost daily medical bulletins on the brekky program.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke Rourke’s Reviews Welcome to 2021 ■ It's great to be back, and let's hope 2021 is an improvement over 2020.

Among many sectors that shut down, cinema was one of them, and although it's still fighting an uphill battle, at least Australian audiences have been able to return to theatres, albeit under strict guidelines.

Here is a small selection of what I saw over the break (I also listened to some terrific albums, including Eyes Wide Open by Twice, Travel

by Mamamoo, and What Do I Call You Now? by Taeyeon).

Run. ***. Aneesh Chaganty's follow-up to Searching is another effective, compact thriller, but is partially undone by an obvious performance by the perennially overthe-top Sarah Paulson, making the twists appear quite telegraphed.

Small Axe Series. *****. Academy Award winning film-maker Steve McQueen's exceptional series of five films, examining the experiences of London's West Indian community between 1969 and 1982, is searing, brutal, confrontational, insightful, intimate, and most of all, passionate. Was one of the greatest releases for 2020.

Voice Of Silence. ***½. An enthralling, low-key look at a child kidnapping, and the moral ambiguity that follows.

The Call. ****. Wildly clever thriller that makes the most of its outrageous premise. A remake that is far superior to the original 2011 movie.

Me And Me. ***½. Acclaimed actor Jung Jin-young makes an impressive directorial debut with this quietly disorientating mystery drama that explores identity and a sense of place.

Monster Hunter. *. Paul W.S. Anderson's attempt to start a new franchise is so bad, it makes his awful Resident Evil films look good by comparison.

Ma Rainey's Bottom. ***½.

Though it can't escape its stage origins, and plot and character introductions are all-too-brief, this remains an involving period drama, elevated by a gallery of strong performances.

Nomadland. ****½. After her first two features, Songs My Brother Taught Me and especially The Rider, were criminally overlooked by audiences, supremely talented director Chloe Zhao finally attains the recognition she deserves with this Terrence Malick inspired drama, which is an absolute joy to behold. Stars Oscar winner Frances McDormand.

The Midnight Sky. **½. After helming the misfires Suburbicon and The Monuments Men, actor/ director makes a partial return to

form here, but this restrained apocalyptic drama is still an unengaging disappointment.

Soul. ***½. After a recent string of hit-and-misses, Pixar return to form with this engaging comedy/ drama, though it isn't as good as the thematically similar Inside Out. Mank. ***½. David Fincher meticulously brings 1930s Hollywood to life in this scabrous look at the making of Citizen Kane. Gary Oldman is superb.

Wolfwalkers. ****. The makers of The Secret Of Kells, Song Of The Sea and The Breadwinner again deliver the goods with this beautifully animated fable that thoughtfully examines its flawed, human characters.

The Dry. ***. Okay drama/ thriller that is filled with convincing regional atmosphere, despite a plot that is a little too easy to work out, particularly if you've seen David Mamet's excellent 1991 procedural, Homicide. Unsubtle casting also doesn't help.

High Ground. **½. Wellcrafted but disappointingly shallow drama that never fully explores its violent, challenging subject matter.

Jack Thompson easily steals the film.

Promising Young Woman. ***½. Another strong directorial debut, this time by actor-turned-director Emerald Fennell. A potent mix of dark humour and social commentary, with a finale that is reminiscent of the 2016 Korean film, Missing You. Shadow In The Cloud. ***. A divisive film that entertainingly runs with its genre mash-up premise and deliberately unrealistic approach.

Director Roseanne Liang nicely taps into the Euro thrillers of the early 80s.

Penguin Bloom. **. Apotentially compelling true-life drama is sunk due to an utterly by-the-numbers script, though director Glendyn Ivin does try to make it feel more involving than what it actually is.

The Marksman. ***. Predictable but surprisingly entertaining action/thriller is helped by a director who underplays the material. Its measured approach may disappoint those looking for non-stop action.

Wonder Woman 1984. **.

Bloated follow-up falls into every conceivable trap a sequel possibly can, resulting in a dull, overlong and empty misfire.

After four decades the classic gangster genre reached blockbuster status with this epic saga of an aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty who transfers control of his empire to his reluctant son, Francis Ford Coppola created a tough, tense, violent and exciting experience, set a whole new benchmark and standard for all other of the genre to follow, Oscar winner for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Screenplay.

THE STING (1973): Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw.

After the box-office smash 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' screen greats Paul Newman and Robert Redford were [accidently] teamed for the second and final time in this classic comic Oscar winning gem of lovable conmen and revenge is brimming with laughs, thrills and a surprise or two, this is as good as it gets, almost perfect in every way, and one of the rare gems that is the best fun you can have watching a movie!

DR. STRANGELOVE: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1963): Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Slim Pickens, Sterling Hayden, James Earl Jones.

Stanley Kubrick's darkly comic masterpiece of an insane general who launches a nuclear holocaust attack that will ultimately destroy the world, and a war room of politicians and generals frantically try to stop it, but it is the sinister Dr. Strangelove, brilliantly portrayed by Peter Sellers in a tour-de-force performance, one of three roles, that has other ideas in his diabolical mind, chilling, hysterically funny and haunting.

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994): Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, James Whitmore.

Delightful parody of five famous literary detective characters and their sidekicks who are invited to a creepy mansion to solve a strange mystery.

All the classic super-sleuth's are beautifully sent-up here: Sam Spade, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles from The Thin Man series. The fabulous cast are all in top form working from a wonderfully witty script by Neil Simon, but it is the late, great Peter Falk the dominates all the mysterious proceedings with a scene stealing performance as Sam Diamond. Great fun and a fabulous laugh riot that will more than tickle your funny bone from beginning to end!

Trivia: The screams of a woman used as a doorbell at the mansion is Fay Wray's screams from the 1933 classic King Kong.

The absorbing and haunting story of a woman who begins a new life in a new city, where she forms an unlikely relationship with a mysterious hit-man who originally intended to kill her after he believes she accidently witnessed a hit, beautifully balanced throughout, great performances from both Michael Keaton and Scottish actress Kelly MacDonald, brimming with pathos and sensitive characterization, outstanding directorial debut by Michael Keaton, a real gem to absorb and cherish!

■ John Rozentals tastes a range of Tyrrell wines from much further afield than the family's beloved Hunter Valley.

Bruce Tyrrell: the Heathcote region is nestled between Bendigo, the Macedon Ranges and the Goulburn Valley, 120 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.

Wine production first developed in the region during the 1950s, before undergoing significant expansion during the 1980s.

The temperate climate, with hot summer days followed by cool nights, and the deep-red Cambrian soils, are ideally suited to the production of full-bodied, rich and textured red wines; full ripeness is always achieved, but the climate is not so warm as to diminish varietal character.

Consequently, Heathcote has established a reputation for high-quality table wines.

Shiraz wines of unimaginable depth of colour and extreme weight of fruit are now the hallmarks of this relatively young region.

Planting of Tyrrell's 26 hectares of shiraz and malbec vines in Heathcote began in 1994 and finished in 1997, the year our first Heathcote wine was released.

Situated at an elevation of 160320 metres on the eastern slope of the Mount Camel range, the vineyard is high enough to be out of the frost zone and is protected from the hot sun in the late afternoon.

Blue Diamond set to sparkle

■ The Ciaron Maher-David Eustace team are confident that they have the horse to win the Blue Diamond Stakes to be run at Caulfield on February 20.

Their brilliant filly, Enthaar, spread-eagled a smart field of fillies in winning the Chairman's Stakes at Caulfield.

She made it two out of two in an easy win giving nothing else a chance over the 1000 metres, running the distance in 57.28 seconds.

Her rider, Mark Zahra, on pulling up on the filly mentioned to fellow rider Damien Oliver, who rode the second placegetter that it was harder to pull her up over the line than it was in the run.

He feels that the 1200 metres of the final will not be a worry.

Both Maher and Eustace are extremely confident of victory giving the combination their first win in the Blue Diamond.

On the second line is the James Cummings trained Anamoe, a two-year-old colt by Street Boss.

Cummings said; “ Of the two year-olds that we have sent to races this season, he has registered the best performance.

"Our feeling is that with a horse like Anamoe, the best course would be to let it all unfold naturally and we might be duly rewarded.

“He's won over 1000 metres after all, and we wouldn't want to see him ripping along when we don't want him to".

“He's worked stylishly in preparation for this, and we're looking forward to him stepping up to this race.”

On the same line of betting is the smart twoyear-old filly, Dosh, who made it two out of two, when she led all the way to win the Fillies Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield.

She proved too good for the likes of the oddson favourite, Frost Flowers.

Her trainer, Graeme Begg, who won the Blue Diamond in 2018, knows what is all about.

He has rested the filly after that one run to race in the final on February 20.

That was over 1000 metres after leading all the way, dictating her own terms.

It will be a different story come final day, with more pressure applied over the longer trip of 1200 metres.

The big tip in the race is a colt by the name of Profiteer, who was the short priced favourite in the Inglis Millineum in Sydney as we went to press. There are big raps on the colt.

He is by the former Golden Slipper winner, Capitalist, and is prepared by Mick Price who won the Diamond with Extreme Choice.

Let's go back to the Victoria Derby, where he had his lanky three-year-old Johnny Get Angry, going around in the big one at big odds.

Not to be put off after a couple of placings, he was quietly confident that the son of Tavistock, could be hard to beat over the 2400 metres of the Derby.

At one stage bookies bet 50-1 the colt, and he came into around $15, when they jumped after a couple of good minor placings.

As mentioned, Johnny Get Angry is by the New Zealand sire, Tavistock, from a Zabeel mare named Luminova.

When receiving the award from the Chairman of the VRMA, Warren Huntly, he stated that he puts his faith in the Tavistock, Zabeel stock, and hopes to win many more.

Hat-trick for Denis

■ Former football premiership winning coach, Denis Pagan, completed three giant wins, when he won the Victoria Racing Media Association's In recent times he got out of football and Personality of the Year, at our gala function at started off in the pretty tough training ranks of the Emerald Hotel in South Melbourne.

His football premiership came in 1996 when the Sport of Kings.

With help from some great trainers like Leon he guided North Melbourne to an emphatic vicCorstens, and his son Troy, and advice from a tory.

The colt hasn't raced a great deal, but has the ideal breeding to run the two miles of the Melbourne Cup, and being out of a Zabeel mare, he will handle wet tracks without a worry.

Pagan won over a million dollars in stakemoney with the win of Johnny Get Angry in the Derby, and is putting into buy more of the Tavistock breed.

Denis beat a select field of Jamie Kah, a top jockey, leading trainer Tom Dabernig, the combination of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, and Jye Mc Neil, the winning Melbourne Cup jockey last year.

The Personality of the Year Lunch attracted the biggest crowd I have seen since I have been a member, and that is a long time.

There were a number of other main awards on the day, the first of those was the Bert Wolfe Award, named after one of the greatest turf writers in Australia, many moons ago.

Fittingly it went to a former Racing Editor of the Herald Sun, Ray Huxley.

I was having a chat with another former top man in racing, Bernie O'Brien, who in his time was the Racing Editor of the Herald Sun. Bernie was telling me that is not enjoying the best of health at the moment, so we wish him well and congratulate him.

The Darren Gauci Award named after the champion rider, was won by top apprentice Michael Poy, son of a yesteryear legend in Michael Clarke.

The coveted Roy Higgins Medal was won by champion rider Damien Oliver, who enjoyed the day, winning the Medal for a second time. The Best Feature Award for print media was won by Leon Schlink, who at the time was working for the Herald Sun. He is now working overseas.

Another feature was the VRC Award won by Damian Ratcliffe from the Age newspaper.

The Inglis Award for the best breeding and sales story was won by Michael Felgate for RSN, he is also seen on the Channel 10 coverage of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Gigantic meetings at Tabcorp Park ■ Tabcorp Park Melton held two gigantic meetings on both Friday February 5 and Saturday February 6, Friday featuring the $300,000 (Group 1) What The Hill Great Southern Star, a heat and final series on Friday and Victoria's premier race the $500,000 Del-Re National A.G. Hunter Cup on Saturday.

Take a bow ■ Long Forest pair Andy & Kate Gath were the home town heroes on Friday when outstanding 9Y0 Skyvalley-Begin gelding Tornado Valley won both the second heat and final of the 1720 metre Great Southern Star.

Having his first outing since last October, Tornado Valley led throughout in his $50,000 heat to account for Magicool and raging hot favourite Majestic Man, returning a mile rate of 1-53.1.

Stepping out in the final some three hours later, Tornado Valley after leading out and taking a trail on Magicool, used the sprint lane to register a thrilling half neck margin over Magicool and Majestic Man in a repeat of their elimination result, the mile rate a lot slower 157.1.

Hunter Cup success ■ Kialla (Shepparton) mentor David Moran's 5Y0 Modern Art-Ponder In Paris had nothing more than a "stroll in the park" to capture the Hunter Cup in a breeze much to the delight of NSW owner Kevin Gordon.

Starting from gate two on the second row trailing Alta Orlando which led out, Lochinvar Art was eased slightly as Fourbigmen (gate four), Bettor Be The Bomb (gate five) and Somewhere Secret (gate six) all went forward in a lead time of 83.7 seconds to avoid being crowded.

Angling three and four wide running into the straight on the first occasion, Lochinvar Art ambled to the lead at the judge on the first occasion when Alta Orlando's driver Chris Alford showed no resistance in allowing him to cross and from there on, the race was his to lose.

Given an easy time with Moran rating him to suit, Lochinvar Art in quarters of 29.9, 30.1, 26.2 and 27 for the last mile coasted to the wire untouched to score by 6.4 metres from Alta Orlando which stuck to his guns, with King Of Swing a game third after racing wide for the final circuit. The mile rate 1-54.8 which was well outside Tiger Tara's 1-53.2 set in 2019.

There was plenty of rumours prior to the race that all was not good with the horse, however that was not justified.

Lochinvar Art has now won the Vicbred Super Series Final, Shepparton Gold Cup, Ballarat Cup and Hunter Cup all in the space of five weeks taking his stake earnings to over $1,368,000.

Wedderburn Cup ■ Wedderburn's biggest day of the year was held on Sunday January 31 featuring the Loddon Shire Wedderburn Pacing Cup over 2555 metres and the Richmond & Associates Wedderburn Trotters Cup over the marathon trip of 2955 metres.

Strathfieldsaye owners Eric and Heather Anderson have won a plethora of provincial cups over the years and Kiwi bred 5Y0 SportswriterPembrook Belle gelding Pembrook Charlie trained by daughter Julie Douglas added another to the tally after taking the pacers cup.

Driven by Hamilton based Jackie Barker, Pembrook Charlie from gate two settled one/ one from gate two as Guptas Cullen inside him led. Pushed back a spot mid-race when Rocknroll Eyes went forward to park in the open, Pembrook Charlie was given every opportunity to figure in the finish.

Extricated to be three wide trailing Modern Bliss which came out in the back straight on the last occasion, Pembrook Charlie despite making the final bend four wide, finished best to prevail by a half head from Im Shadow Boxer which came away from the back of the leader to be behind a wall of horses on straightening and flashed late, with Modern Bliss a half head away in third place just in advance of I Cast No Shadow and Rocknroll Eyes in a thrilling finale.

Stepping cleanly from a daunting 20 metre equal backmark on the tight circuit, Travel Bug settled five back along the markers with old timer Father Christmas out of season leading from barrier four.

When Beau Garcon came away from four back the markers to lead up the outside division with just over two laps to travel, Herbie was quick to latch on his back with Travel Bug receiving the prime one/one position.

Easing three wide on the home turn, Travel Bug to the delight of the McNaulty family raced clear halfway up the running and held on to score by a half neck from The Penny Drops out wide after following the winner home, with Beau Garcon third 6.1 metres away.

The mile rate 2-05.2 (last half 61.7 - quarter 31).

Tontine features ■ The Tontine Pacing and Trotting Championships were held at Horsham on Monday February 1.

First held in 1981 hosted by Ararat, the heats and final series instigated by the Western District clubs of Stawell, Horsham, Ararat and Hamilton on a rotation basis was won by Kiwi Conference for a stake of $11,000. The race has changed over the years with Ballarat and Geelong being added to the mixture and is now a one off seasonal feature.

■ The $25,000 (Group 3) Pacers event over 2200 metres was taken out by 4Y0 Hes Watching-Jilliby Oliva gelding Jilliby Sellwood unbeaten in four starts going into the race.

Trained at Terang by Marg Lee for the Craven Family Group, Jilliby Selwood driven by nephew Glen Craven was sent forward at the start from gate five to settle on the back of Good Faith (gate four) trapped outside Bona Khan which flew away from outside the front line to cross the heavily supported favourite Cant Top This (gate three) which led momentarily.

Angling away from the back of the leader shortly after to assume the front running, Cant Top This looked set to enjoy a sweet trip as Jilliby Selwood swapped places with Good Faith to race exposed.

When local trainer/driver Aaron Dunn made a swift mid-race move from near last with Shady Azz to shadow the leader, Jilliby Sellwood was able to be given a breather one/one.

With the tempo increasing in the final circuit as Shady Azz really applied pressure to the leader, Jilliby Selwood was able to angle to the back of Cant Top This on the final bend and use the sprint lane to gain a head decision in a thrilling finish from Cant Top This and Shady As who was a head away in third place.

The mile rate 1-58.5 (last half mile 56.1 quarter 28.7).

Charlton winners ■ The $25,000 Trotters Feature over 2700 metres went to Charlton based co-trainers Michael Gadsden and Denbeigh Wade's 6Y0 Pegasus Spur-Maoris Lass mare Maorishadow.

Driven by Denbeigh, Maorishadow began safely from an equal 30 metre backmark to settle six back along the markers as Paddy Lee's inform Kiwi import Milly An Eyre (Glen Craven) led from the pole in a strung out field.

Trained and driven by David, Tiger Band Wagon despite racing exposed outside the poleline leader Rocking Tiff, took over approaching the home turn and although tackled strongly by the long odds-on favourite Silver Mystique (one/two - three wide last lap), defield all rivals to register a 3.6 metre victory from Royal Speech which followed the runner up home. Silver Mystique weakened for third 4.9 metres back.

Lifetime thrill ■ At Mildura on Tuesday, veteran Irymple trainer Laurie Callick would have received the "thrill of a lifetime" after snaring the trifecta in the Quality Hotel Mildura Grand Pace over 1790 metres with Impetuoso, Springfield Shadow and Pinkie Promise.

Driven by Jack Laugher, Impetuoso a 6Y0 gelded son of Artistic Fella and Bubby Doll began brilliantly from outside the front line to stride past Springfield Shadow inside him running into the first turn and lead throughout, accounting for Springfield Shadow (Wayne Hill) which trailed by 2.7 metres in a rate of 2-00.3. Pinkie Promise (Jayden Brewin) was third 5.7 metres away after following the pair.

Taken back at start ■ Eight year old Rock N Roll Heaven-Dolly McD gelding Bernie Winkle added another Mildura victory to his impressive tally when a huge victor of the Tasco Petroleum Pace over 2190 metres.

Again handled by Bendigo's Ellen Tormey, Bernie Winkle trained by Julie Douglas was taken back at the start from outside the front line to settle at the tail as stablemate Ozzie Battler led easily from the pole.

When Augustus Jack (one/one) eased three wide in the last lap, Bernie momentarily followed him forward before sprinting brilliantly four wide to lead on turning and race away to score by 18.2 metres in 1-58.6 over Queens Angel which trailed the pacemaker who held down third a metre away.

Bernie loves racing in Sunraysia and has now chalked up 21 successes at the track in his 39 overall wins from 202 race appearances.

Leading from gate two, Glens Of Tekoa defied all challengers to register a 10.9 metre victory from Lotakevi which trailed, with Calculating Dancer third from mid-field after moving to be outside the winner on the final bend. The mile rate 1-59.3.

■ Monegeeta trainer Jody Woodham-Murdoch combined with Michael Bellman to capture the Geelong - High Speed Racing Pace over 1609 metres with Top Play, a 5Y0 New Zealand bred Shadow Play-Truly Tops gelding. Enjoying a sweet trip trailing the poleline pacemaker after starting from inside the second line, Top Play when eased off the back of the leader on turning, finished full of running to defeat her by 4.3 metres in a slick rate of 1-55.9. Our Master George (three back the markers) used the sprint lane for third a head away. The victory gave Michael a pleasant 40th birthday present.

Double day ■ Two meetings were held on Thursday Maryborough and Shepparton and what a day it was for Balliang trainer Joe Abela at Maryborough who snared at double with 8Y0 Live Or Die-Tealsby Force mare Misschanel taking the 2190 metre AG Electrical Pace and 6Y0 Stonebridge Regal-Shinechanel gelding Carmy Dan the Welcome Bernie Crameri Pace over the same trip, both driven by Chris Alford.

Miss Chanel starting from outside the front line was sent forward to park in the open outside Good Guy Mac and proved much too strong for her rivals, scoring by 6.9 metres from Rocks Arnt Pets which followed her all of the way, with Fowsands (three back the markers) running his usual honest race for third 1.7 metres away. The mile rate 1-59.4.

Carmy Dan showed speed to lead from gate six and after being rated a treat, held too many guns for Iamawingate which trailed. Inaugurate was third from mid-field in the moving line. The margins 2.4 X 3.7 metres in a mile rate of 201.8.

Tons of tenacity ■ Popular Ross Creek trainer Norm McVitty's honest 9Y0 Our Sir Vancelot-Romantiscape gelding Our Sir Oliver raced by members of the Mcvitty family and friends was a tough victor of the 1690 metre Crameri Export Quality Chaff Pace with Olivia Weidenbach in the sulky. Restrained from gate six to settle towards the tail of the field, Our Sir Oliver was sent forward racing for the bell to race uncovered for the final circuit and after showing tons of tenacity on turning, prevailed by a half head in a blanket finish over Son Of Major (three wide last lap from mid-field), with Cloudlet a neck back in third place after gaining a split between runners from mid-field for third.
