“Will the minister please provide a date as to when a longer term solution to improve the road will be actioned and exactly what that will involve?

“This is the second time I have raised this road. We were told that works would be done, but the state of the road is still appalling. When people have to drive in, it is still full of potholes and it is very difficult to drive over.

“School is about to finish and a lot of visitors will be in the area during the summer period, and it needs urgent attention. I have been very disappointed with the lack of attention given to it already despite the minister saying that works would be undertaken.”

6 arrests after gang raids ■ Police have arrested six people and seized 14 firearms as part of a National Day of Action targeting the Mongols Outlaw Motorcycle Gang.

A warrant was executed at a club house in Echuca, with police also attending addresses in Melbourne CBD, Southbank, Montrose, Rowville, Tecoma. Elsternwick, Oakleigh South, Pakenham, Carrum Downs, Clyde North, Thornbury, Reservoir and Hoppers Crossing.

Members of the Echo Taskforce, Public Order Response Team, Licensing Records Division, Dog Squad, Bomb Response Unit and local police, as well as the Australian Federal Police National Anti Gangs Squad, were involved in the day of action.

Police arrested six people, who have been charged with a range of drug, firearms, weapons and explosives offences.

A number of items were also seized from the addresses, including firearms, cash, explosives and a range of drugs such as cocaine, cannabis, hallucinogens, steroids and prescription medication.

Crime Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Mick Frewen said it was imperative that law enforcement agencies across Australia continue to work to together to target outlaw motorcycle gangs, including the Mongols.

Petition for Frankston rail ■ Senator David Van has hit out at the lack of funding for the Frankston rail extension in the State Budget.

“In what is supposedly the largest infrastructure spending budget in the state’s history, it’s hard to fathom why the Frankston rail extension has yet again been rejected by the Andrews Government,” Senator Van said.

He said the Morrison Government has listed the Frankston rail extension as a national infrastructure priority earlier this year and maintained its $228 million to the project since 2018.

Senator Van said the Committee for Greater Frankston’s Public Transport Connectivity Working Group, which includes local Labor members Peta Murphy and Paul Edbrooke, have supported the project.

“During the 2019 Federal

● Senator David Van Election the Australian Labor Party, including the current Member for Dunkley, also committed funds to the project if they were elected.

“Despite the strong bipartisan support for this project, the only person who isn’t supportive of the Frankston rail ex-

tension is DanAndrews,” Senator Van said. “The only reason he is not supportive of the project is because the costings that his Government undertook was for a gold-plated electrification project, which included heavily inflated figures due to the inclusion of unnecessary level crossing removals.”

Senator Van has started a petition calling on the State Government to fund this project and he said that members of the community are encouraged to sign the e-petition online: www.davidvan.com.au/ deliverfrankstonrailextension “Despite acknowledging that the majority may not be required, the preliminary business case incorporates five level crossing removals between Frankston and Baxter,” Senator Van said.

The rail extension is 5-km to Langwarrin, and a further 3-km to Baxter.

Bark painter at Bunjil Place ■ John Mawurndjul is celebrated for his mastery of rarrk (cross-hatching) and his depiction of djang (sacred sites), a tradition shared by generations of Kuninjku artists.

Bark paintings and sculptures drawn from private and public collections across the world tell the stories of Kuninjku culture and the significant locations surrounding the artist’s home in central north Arnhem Land.

Bunjil Place at Narre Warren is presenting a survey of works by John Mawurndjul until Sunday, January 17.

Developed and co- presented by the MCA and Art Gallery of South Australia, in association with ManingridaArts and Culture, this landmark touring exhibition includes over 50 works, spanning 40 years of the artist’s practice.

Born in 1952, Mawurndjul lives and works in Milmilngkan in western Arnhem Land and Maningrida in central north Arnhem Land.

He served as a senior executive with a major Melbourne community newspaper publishing company, and was a representative on industry organisations.

Mr Long was statewide winner of the 1986 award of the Victorian Country Press Association Ltd for best local reporting.

He was asked on a number of occasions to be National Judge for the Australian Suburban Newspapers’ Association awards.

Mr Long is well known for philanthriopic and voluntary community service work including that through his distinguished senior membership of a prominent charitable fraternity (since 1978), and from 1985 as a former member of Rotary International (awarded as a Paul Harris Fellow).

Local Media Pty Ltd has operated the Melbourne Observer weekly newspaper since September 2002. The newspapers appear in print and online. The title Melbourne Observer was also used in the 1990s by newspapers associated with Mr Long.

Local Media Pty Ltd also publishes newspapers under the name of The Local Paper.

Use of that name goes back to 1985, with newspapers that circulated for a time in Ringwood and Park Orchards, and very briefly in Greater Dandenong.

The Local Paper name was again used from 2009 for a weekly section in a free community service newspaper called The Phoenix which donated $1.3 million in advertising to Black Saturday bushfire victims.

The Local Paper commenced as a standalone weekly publication from February 2016. It now publishes a number of editions in almost all suburbs of Melbourne, and in peri-urban municipalities.

The Local Paper has local editions that serve the people of 32 different local government areas in Melbourne and beyond.

Above the masthead of the front-pages of each of Local Media’s newspapers each week, the company makes the clear statement: ‘Local and Independent. Not associated with any other publication in this area.’

All of the company’s commercial correspondence carries the same unambiguous notification in writing. .

As required by law, all business names used by Local Media Pty Ltd have been properly registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

All domain names for online publication are appropriately registered with AU Domain Administration Ltd. All registrations are in good standing.

Local Media Pty Ltd commenced publication of its weekly North-West Edition of The Local Paper on July 1 this year. It covers the municipalities of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley and Moreland.

In a email dated December 1, lawyers for Star News Group and MMP Star requested that immediate steps be taken by Local Media Pty Ltd to relinquish the registrations of names and domains including Cranbourne Independent, Dandenong Examiner, Brimbank Advocate, Hobsons Bay Mail, Maribyrnong Mail and Dandenong Independent.

Local Media Pty Ltd complied with this request on the same day.

Local Media Pty Ltd has at all times acted in good faith. It disagrees with the assertions made by Star News Group and MMP Star that Local Media Pty Ltd has ‘passed off’ that it is associated with the Star group.

Our COVID-Safe summer ■ A new ‘COVIDSafe Summer’ will be in place until at least the end of January, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday (Dec. 6).

Masks will only be required in a limited number of places: on public transport, in rideshare vehicles and taxis, in some retail settings including indoor shopping centres, supermarkets, department stores and indoor markets.

Masks continue to be recommended indoors or outdoors when distancing can’t be maintained.

Victorians will be able to host up to 30 people in their home. Outdoor gatherings in public places – the beach, the park – can increase to 100.

Density limits in pubs, restaurants and cafes will shift to one person per 2sq metres for both indoors and outdoors with no other cap. The use of electronic record keeping – a QR code – will be mandatory.

For small operations, there will be no density limits if the patron number is under 25.

For retail and beauty services, businesses will be able to move to one person per 2sq metres – if they also introduce electronic record keeping.

For businesses where that is just not possible, the existing density limits will continue to apply.

The cap for funerals and weddings will also be removed, subject to a new density limit of one person per 2sq metres.

For those who want to dance, dancefloors will be able to host up to 50 people, with a density of one person per 4sqm.

The same rules will apply to nightclubs. The health advice still stands: no hugs, no handshakes and if you're feeling sick, you need to get tested and stay home.

The same new density limits will apply for community facilities, like our libraries, RSLs, and community halls.

In gyms, the density limit will move to one per 4sq metres – with exercise classes limited to 50 indoors and 100 outdoors.

There will be a move to a 50 per cent return for office workers by January 11, after considering the public health advice at the time.

For the Victorian public service, up to 25 per cent will be able to return to the office from January 11, moving up to 50 per cent on February 8.

“This is a remarkable achievement. It is something that every Victorian owns, it is something that every Victorian has built through the sacrifice, through all that they have given up, the character that they have shown, and the compassion that they have extended to each other,” Mr Andrews said. ★ There are no restriction on reasons to leave home but stay safe.

Boost for Peninsula groups ■ Two local community groups on the Mornington Peninsula will benefit from a share of $2.7 million from the Morrison Government Volunteer Grants, to support the work of local volunteers.

Gunnamatta Surf Lifesaving Club will receive $1000 and SES Hastings will receive $2027 to support their volunteers.

The grants awarded are between $1000 and $5000, and will enable local organisations to better support their volunteers to purchase small equipment, pay fuel, transport and training costs.

Greg Hunt, Federal Member for Flinders, said volunteers are an integral part of society, especially during difficult times.

“As we all know, the Peninsula has been significantly impacted by Coronavirus this year and help is still needed by many.

“Our community will be encouraged by the Morrison Government’s grant funding for the Gunnamatta Surf Lifesaving Club and SES Hastings in as part of this supplementary grant round.”

“These groups join the 17 Peninsula groups which received Volunteer Grants earlier in the year and each of them is a vital part of the fabric of our local community,” Mr Hunt told The Local Paper.

■ An alumni group is being formed to bring together all past, present and future cast, crew, friends and family of the combined Southern Peninsula Players and Astral Theatre Group at Rosebud.

Traffic changes across Shire ■ Traffic management measures to accommodate outdoor dining are also now in place around Blairgowrie, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha and Sorrento.

The changes mostly involve lowered speed limits, crucial to ensuring the safety of shoppers and diners.

Part of Main St, Mornington, has been closed to traffic and opened up to pedestrians and cyclists to create more space for outdoor dining.

Preparations are also well underway to allow outdoor dining along Point Nepean Rd in Rye. Mayor Cr Despi O’Connor said: “These changes will allow local businesses to use onstreet parking space for outdoor dining and trading and enable local shops, cafes and restaurants to stay viable under the State Government’s COVIDsafe regulations.

Call to cut pokies hours ■ Greater Dandenong City Council is calling upon the Victorian Government to lower the maximum opening hours at gambling venues from 20 hours a day to 14 hours.

This step is aimed at reducing gambling harm in the community following the opening of most gambling venues last month, Current permits allow venues to seek permission to open for up to 20 hours per day. Many close at 4am or 5am, before re-opening as early as 8am.

Greater Dandenong Council‘s proposal is that gambling venues be required to close by midnight and not open again until 10 am.

Martin Fidler, Director of Community Services explained the hours can be harmful.

“Being able to use gambling machines as late as 4am, or as early as 8am, harms vulnerable residents,” Mr Fidler said.

“We want to reduce the risk of harm, particularly as our community recovers from the pandemic. Let’s put the pokies to bed between midnight and 10am.”

“In 2018-19, Greater Dandenong residents lost $119 million to gambling machines, or ‘pokies’, at local hotels and clubs. Since the lockdown in late March, losses have declined by $76 million”, Mr Fidler said.

■ Megan Burke and local Langwarrin children have given away 273 potted plants to local residents as part of a community bonding experience. ““The community loved it. They left letters in our mailbox and lollies and chocolates on our doorstep which was so nice,” Megan said.

“After the first few days, when we had run out of cuttings, I put a post on the Langwarrin Locals Facebook page saying if anyone had cuttings to give away to put them out the front.

“We had a huge amount of people drop bags of cuttings and plants to give away; people got really into it.”

Meanwhile in Frankston, Willum Warrain Elder, Aunty Jennine ‘Jen’ Armistead was also inspired to give away plants from her garden in a bid to spread some cheer during lockdown, said the Frankston City Council.

Robins Rd petition ■ Frankston Council has received a petition with seven signatures regarding an objection to the proposed Colourbond structure at 435 Robins Rd Langwarrin.

Rosebud dining ■ Parking spaces in front of the shops on Point Nepean Rd between Fourth and Fifth Avenues at Rosebud are closed to cars and opened up for outdoor dining. The speed limit through Rosebud will be reduced from 50kmh to 40kmh.

Recycled footpath in Seaford ■ The first recycled footpath by the City of Frankston has been installed in Seaford The footpath, located in Hartnett Drive, uses recycled plastics gathered from Coles and Woolies' REDcycle program.

The footpath is the first council constructed project in Australia using Polyrok - a sustainable alternative to mineral aggregate in concrete for pathways, kerbs and channels that find a home for soft plastics, the most problematic waste stream.

Replas and Frankston City Council teamed together with Frankston Sand and Soil and SR Engineering to install a concrete footpath using recycled soft plastic.

■ Twenty-five-year-old Bermagui writer Jessica Southern-Reid won Sisters in Crime’s 27th Scarlet Stiletto Short Story Awards, which were presented online by actor Nadine Garner.

Southern-Reid, a first-time crime writer, was awarded the Swinburne University of Technology First Prize ($1500) and the coveted trophy, a scarlet stiletto shoe (this year in satin) with a steel stiletto heel plunging into a mount. Her World War 11 story about women pilots, Death in The Skies, also took out the Every Cloud Production’s History with Mystery Award ($750).

After growing up on a farm on the NSW coast, Jessica went to Scotland in 2013 and accidentally stayed for seven years, falling utterly in love with the UK. The pandemic cut short her stay – she had almost notched up the seven-year residency needed to study literature and archaeology in Edinburgh – and she is now back in Bermagui, working in a bar and contemplating her future.

She has four “more or less fantasy” novels on the go but has been reticent about trying her hand at crime. “With fantasy, you can make it up. With crime, it’s more complicated,” she said.

“I’ve been stalking Sisters in Crime for a few years now and, with the pandemic, I thought I might as well give it a crack. I’m smiling ear to ear. When I was rung with the news, I had just started reading Tara Moss’s novel, The War Widow, and she got her start as a writer with the Scarlet Stiletto Awards. It was a moment of serendipity.”

This year, a record 241 short stories written by Australian women competed for a record $10,460 in prize money and benefits.

Over the past 27 years, 3896 short stories have been entered with 28 (soon to be 29) Scarlet Stiletto Award winners and other category winners going on to have books published.

Garner also launched Scarlet Stiletto: The Twelfth Cut, a collection of winning stories from this year’s competition, edited by Phyllis King.

The ‘Jones’ family was surprised with more than $100,000 in cash, services and gifts, including a fully furnished house.

Jase and PJ heard about how the family have been doing it tough throughout 2020 with the family of five – Brooke (Mum), Shane (Dad) and three children (Charlee 21, Hunter 18 and Max 12) having faced many challenges in recent years.

Shane was badly injured in a brutal unprovoked attack which left him unable to work and with some ongoing health issues including PTSD. Brooke works full-time as a teacher as well as caring for her husband and children.

Maverick of Aussie theatre

■ Few theatregoers today would know of flamboyant producer/entrepreneur Ernest Charles Rolls, described as having kept Australians entertained through the 1930s, and now “an un justly forgotten maverick of Australian and British theatre”.

In his superbly presented new book HankyPanky: the Theatrical Escapades of Ernest C. Rolls, performing arts historian Frank Van Straten documents the fascinating story of Rolls, visually enhanced by wonderful archival images researched from varied sources and beautifully restored by Matthew Turley.

The book’s concept was born at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 2018 when Mike Walsh launched Frank’s book Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne: the Shows, the Stars, the Stories.

Mike mentioned he was intrigued by Ernest C. Rolls who had run The Maj in the late 1930s and suggested to Frank, “Why don’t you write a book about this guy?”

The book’s title acknowledges Rolls’ revue Hanky-Panky which was presented at the Empire Theatre, London in 1917, and also aptly reflects the colorful life of this “proverbial black sheep of a family famous for its musical achievements.”

Mike Walsh’s Foreword observes that Rolls was born Joseph Adolphe Darewski, and produced successful shows in Britain’s music halls, variety theatres and the prestigious London Palladium. He also experienced bankruptcy, trouble with the law and a jail term in 1922 before arriving in Australia.

For 15 years, Ernest C. Rolls was a major theatrical producer in Australia, specially noted for his lavish ‘girly’ variety shows.

Challenges encountered by Frank Van Straten when piecing together the lives of Rolls and his performer wife Jennie Benson included a lack of papers, diaries, letters or memoirs left by the couple.

But Frank persevered with his research and the result is a fine tribute to Rolls and a bygone

Frank writes: “Just as Florenz Ziegfeld lit up Broadway and Charles B. Cochran brought magic to the West End, so Ernest Charles Rolls, for 15 tumultuous years, dazzled Australians with his own unique brand of extravagant escapist entertainment.”

This long overdue story deserves to be told.

Bravo Frank Van Straten on another quality, precious contribution to Australian theatrical history.

What’s On Live performances

■ Malthouse Theatre will reopen in January 2021 with a new live performance hub in the courtyard of the venue. The program will feature artists including Kaiit, Emma Donovan, Eddie Perfect, Judith Lucy and Denise Scott.

The space, which is shared with the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and contemporary dance company Chunky Move, will be transformed into Malthouse Outdoor Stage, to respond to a new demand for outdoor performance venues.

Malthouse Outdoor Stage will reinvigorate Melbourne’s cultural scene by providing vital opportunities for the artists and arts workers who have been hit hardest by the impacts of COVID 19.

With a flexible capacity of up to 312 in cabaret style seating, Malthouse Outdoor Stage will host music, comedy, dance, cabaret, talks, and theatre, all in the open air and with COVID safe controls in accordance with all public health requirements.

Malthouse Outdoor Stage partners and collaborators will include local independent music touring company Penny Drop, which will open the stage with a line-up of local artists including ARIA-winning jazz and soul prodigy Kaiit, funk craftsmen Mildlife, and the singular style of Emma Donovan and The Putbacks.

Melbourne based independent comedy producers Token Events will then take centre stage with artists including Lano and Woodley, actor, writer and composer Eddie Perfect, comedian Anne Edmonds, joined by Welshman Lloyd Langford, and Judith Lucy and Denise Scott.

Where’s My Money?

■ John Patrick Shanley’s Where’s My Money is a black comedy about love and marriage that relies on the acerbic repartee between characters.

Natalie’s (Catherine Ward) cutting evaluation of an old friend, Celeste (Heather Bloom), hides the insecurities she, Natalie, has with her previously divorced husband, Henry (Alexander Lloyd).

A divorce lawyer, Henry, has as his mentor, Sidney (Hayden Burke), a fellow lawyer and divorcee who is cheating on his wife, Marcia Marie (Clare Hayes) with none other than Celeste.

This circuitous interaction provides the structure of the piece rather than any sense of character development or story line. And behind these interactions are the spectres of guilt and past relationships which Shanley has embodied as ghosts. The insecurities of the characters actually come to life. Foremost is a dead Tommy (Laurence Young) who was owed money by his former girlfriend, Natalie – hence, the title of the piece.

Sparsely staged on a rudimentary set, this 7th Floor Theatre production relied heavily on the speedy interchange between the actors which they generally managed well, though Shanley’s appeal to the neurotic Jewish Brooklyn stereotype, namely Sidney and Marcia Marie, doesn’t necessarily sit comfortably with an Australian ear.

Staged in the Cracked Actors Theatre, there is a sense that this cast are concentrating on the fundamentals of dialogue and drama to convey the essence of the playwright’s intentions which is not a bad starting point. It is the raw exchange of dialogue with all its caustic intent that carries this piece. - Review by David McLean

The 56-year-old Little House on the Prairie star shared her health update, "Surgery was wildly successful! Dr. Bray was able to remove all the old hardware, shave off bone spurs causing numbness in my right hand and, he was able to give me the artificial disc. So now I focus on recovery and remaining COVID-19 free. Thank you all for your love, support and prayers. I send so much love back to you all."

Doctor’s office closed ■ Doctor's offices have felt the squeeze of the COVID-19 pandemic as more than 16,000 practices across the country have been forced to close due to safety concerns, fewer patient visits and other challenges, according to a report. Dr. Kelly McGregory, 49, said she made the difficult decision in August to close her pediatric practice just outside Minneapolis. "It was devastating.

That was my baby," she said. McGregory said that as a newer practice without access to stockpiles of personal protective equipment, she had feared at times that she wouldn't be able to keep her staff safe.

"As an independent practice with no real connection to a big health system, it was awful," she said, noting that at one point she only had three surgical masks left for the office. There also was not enough business provided through virtual patient visits, she said. "I did some telemedicine, but it wasn't enough volume to really replace what I was doing in the clinic," she said. Her medical practice is among the more than 16,000 estimated to have closed during the pandemic

■ If you want to eat something for better health, make it fibre. That's the advice from nutrition experts and the latest national dietary guidelines.

Now, a large new review of studies on fibre, published in the Lancet, shows just how beneficial fiber can be. The nutrient substantially lowers the risk of at least four diseases many of which don't even directly relate to the gut.

Compared to those who ate less fiber, people who ate more fiber lowered their risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer, as well as their risk of dying early from any cause, by 15 per cent to 30 per cent. And the more dietary fibre people ate, the lower their risk.

For every additional 8 grams of fibreconsumed, the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and colon cancer dropped by 5 per cent to 27 per cent.

According to the data, people eating 25-29 grams of fiber from foods like fruits and vegetables every day (not from supplements or powders) showed the strongest reductions in risk of the range of diseases, and those eating more tended to show even lower risk. The researchers saw similar benefits among people who ate whole grains.

Doesn’t add up ■ How many of your childhood math or science lessons do you remember today? If the answer is barely any, you aren't alone. A recent survey of 2,000 US. parents finds the average parent these days has the math and science skills of an 11year-old.

Respondents were asked what grade they would be placed in today if they had to take a placement test, and the average answer was sixth grade for both math and science. It's unrealistic to expect anyone to remember everything they were taught in school as a child, of course. Yet the extent to which many American adults feel clueless when it comes to academics is shocking. In all, 42 per cent say they would be "lost" trying to teach their child mathematics. Another 35 per cent express the same sentiment regarding scientific topics.

Bond movie dalyed ■ MGM's No Time to Die is officially heading to April 2 vacating its November 20 release date. Interestingly enough, this puts the James Bond film starring Daniel Craig on the same weekend with Universal's F9. I hear that the latter is bound to move. Universal is providing no comment on that release date change.

UPDATE: The F9 release date indeed has changed..

"MGM, Universal and Bond producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, today announced the release of No Time To Die, the 25th film in the James Bond series, will be delayed until April 2 in order to be seen by a worldwide theatrical audience. We understand the delay will be disappointing to our fans but we now look forward to sharing No Time To Die next year," said the studio in a statement. MGM was the first studio to foresee how the pandemic was going to stall exhibition, and jumped No Time to Die from its Easter weekend release date of April 1012 to the Thanksgiving frame.

■ More than a million Americans travelled via plane on the day before Thanksgiving, the highest number since the COVID-19 pandemic exploded in March, new statistics show.

Figures released by the Transportation Security Administration show that 1,070,967 travellers went through US screening checkpoints on Wednesday, down from 2,624,250 in 2019.

The one-day total is the highest recorded by the TSA since March 16, but still a 59 per cent decrease from last year.

Public health experts and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention had urged people to scrap their Turkey Day travel plans due to rising infection rates across the country.

The TSA also screened more than 1 million passengers on Sunday and Friday.

Prior to that, the last time the agency eclipsed that mark was on Oct. 18, when 1,031,505 went through airports, statistics show. In total, almost 6 million passengers were screened at airports from Friday through Wednesday, TSA data shows.

A forecast by AAA and HIS Mark it predicted earlier this month that Thanksgiving travel would be on the "lighter side," with 50 million Americans expected to hit the roads and get on planes or at least a 10-per cent drop overall, marking the largest one-year decline since 2008.

Magazine ■ Remember those corny comedy films featuring Ma and Pa Kettle? Marjorie Main as Ma Kettle was a fine comic actress with a gravelly voice and Percy Kilbride was just perfect as the mild mannered Pa Kettle.

The characters were simple hillbillies who lived on a run down farm with 15children. As a child I thought they were hilarious.

Mary Tomlinson was born in Indiana in 1890. When she became a vaudeville performer Mary took on the ‘stage name’ of Marjorie Main to avoid embarrassing her father who was a minister.

She debuted on Broadway in 1916. Marjorie married in 1921 but her husband passed away in 1935.

Her first film was A House Divided in 1931.

Marjorie became type-cast in high class dowager roles and made six films with Wallace Beery in the 1940s.

She became a contracted player with MGM studios. Some of her films at MGM included Meet Me In St Louis, The Harvey Girls and Summer Stock.

In 1947 she was cast opposite Percy Kilbride as Ma Kettle in the film The Egg And I. The public loved Ma and Pa Kettle and as a result in 1949 Universal Studios produced their first film titled Ma and Pa Kettle.

Marjorie asked to use her own clothes for the role of Ma and loved working with Percy.

Percy Kilbride was born in San Francisco in 1888 and had worked as a Broadway actor before making his first film in 1933.

Some of his film credits included George Washington Slept Here, The Adventures of Mark Twain and State Fair.

The first film with Marjorie and Percy was a box office smash and was quickly followed in 1950 by Ma And Pa Kettle Go to Town.

Pa's character was a bit on the lazy side and I loved it when Pa was relaxing in his rocking chair in his old bowler hat listening to the radio while Ma bustled around managing the farm, the animals and the children.

Review: Young Kate Pierce, from 2018s "The Christmas Chronicles," is now a cynical teen and is unhappy over her mom's new relationship, and whilst running away she is unexpectedly reunited with Santa Claus when a troublemaker elf threatens to cancel Christmas forever.

With his tongue firmly in his cheek and a wink in the eye Kurt Russell returns as Santa Clause once again for another yuletide adventure, this time accompanied by Mrs. Clause, played by real long time partner Goldie Hawn, and even though there's little that's wholly original, there's an abundance laughs, thrills, high adventure and even a musical duo with the legendary Darlene Love (Christmas Baby, Please Come Home) that will keep adults and kiddies entertained for its near two hour running time.

Co-Written and Directed by Chris Columbus, whose previous credits include "Home Alone" (1990), "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" (1992), "Mrs. Doubtfire" (1993), "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (2001) and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (2002), among others, at a time when Christmas movies are falling from grace through overwhelming cliché and tiresome repetition, the combined star power of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are the major driving force behind this Christmas adventure, as both dive into their respective roles with tremendous commitment, both making it very clear that they are relishing every moment of their screen time.

Overflowing with delightful, and at times not so delightful, quirky characters, along with eye-popping special effects and costume design, this is fun family adventure as much about the importance of family itself, and even though it breath familiarity at times and may suffer slightly from its excessive length, all flaws aside, this is a wild and colourful ride, a well made and highly entertaining adventure throughout which Mr. and Mrs. Clause have never been this kick-ass hip and cool." Review: An embittered "Scrooge" of a woman plans to sell her small town to a mall developer at Christmas, regardless of the consequences to the people who live there.

Part "It's a Wonderful Life" part "Scrooge," this all singing, all dancing Christmas offering from Dolly Parton and company may have its heart in the right place, but the overall outcome is a disappointing misfire of music, comedy, drama and dance that isn't quite sure what it wants to be, a primarily filmed theatrical studio lot production told on sets and unfolding with elements which are off balance and over saturated with sugar coated fantasy amongst all the drama that lacks any truly emotional grip.

Based on the stage play book by Maria S. Schlatter with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, as far as performances go the always lovely Dolly is the lovely Dolly as she sings away on her fluffy cloud as the local Angel determined to save the day and wrongful souls, going up against Christine Baranski, who you may remember as the dispassionate psychiatrist and neuroscientist mother of Leonard Hofstadter in the hit series "The Big Bang Theory" and the sensationalist reporter form 2002s Oscar winning "Chicago," among others, and is perfectly cast, almost type-cast, as the town Scrooge, or Grinch, out to sell the town.

On a positive note, veteran actor Treat Williams (Hair, Prince of the City, Once Upon A Time in America) is a joy as the local secondhand store owner, and among the 24 songs there are genuinely a couple of songs that are sure to put a smile on your face, but sadly, when all is said and done, this is a mash-up of too many Christmas offerings that have come before it, only much better, a cheesy, schmaltzy, mawkish, but at least good hearted, time filler that will be pretty much forgotten by the time it's all over, the same of which can't be said about the delightfully energetic "The Christmas Chronicles 2" which is also screening on Netflix. Rourke’s Reviews The Witches

The Call ■ (MA). 111 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

It's not often that a remake improves on its original source, but The Call does just that, reformatting the material to entertaining, fullblooded effect.

Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye) returns home to see her mother (Kim Sung-ryoung), who is in hospital suffering from a brain tumour.

Having lost her mobile phone on during the trip back, Seo-yeon pulls out an old landline phone to use in the meantime, but when a terrified young woman by the name of Young-sook (Jun Jong-seo) calls one night saying her stepmother is trying to kill her, it's a connection that will lead the two down a unique, but dangerous, path.

Though the specific plotting is different, the narrative arc of both films is generally the same, but where the 2011 version, The Caller (**), failed to capitalise on what is a terrific premise (due to clumsy writing, dull direction and poor performances), the 2020 incarnation is a much smarter beast, pushing both set-up and possibilities to the absolute limit.

The first half in particular is ingeniously plotted, and although it stumbles a little by allowing the race-against-the-clock aspect to overshadow the intricate plot turns in the second, there is still plenty to admire and enjoy (imagine a darker mix of the romantic mega-hit Il Mare (2000) and The Phone (2015)).

Debutant writer/director Lee Chung-hyun shows incredible confidence and skill in executing this tale, especially when it all could have easily fallen on its face early on.

Lee is also backed up by a firstrate technical crew.

The performances by both Park (#Alive) and Jun (Burning) are superb, and without their sterling work, the film wouldn't have gripped as much as it does.

Where the original film-makers seemed afraid to fully explore the unusual premise they had concocted, those at the helm of this remake on the other hand have been fully prepared to cut loose, resulting in a clever, top-shelf thriller that should keep viewers on the edge of their seat.

Although backed by an arsenal of cutting-edge special effects wizardry and a veteran film-maker who knows how to use it, this second adaptation of Roald Dahl's 1983 story is a breathlessly paced, generally entertaining affair, but lacks the genuinely dark undercurrent of both Dahl's book and Nicolas Roeg's memorable 1990 big screen outing.

The action moves from contemporary England to 1960's Alabama, where young Charlie (Jahzir Bruno), orphaned due to a tragic car accident, is sent to live with his grandmother Agatha (Octavia Spencer), and soon after arriving discovers that witches are real, who want nothing more than to rid the world of children.

When she begins to feel ill, Agatha decides to take Charlie to a ritzy hotel, where, co-incidentally, a witch convention is about to take place.

When Charlie comes face-toface with the Grand High Witch (Anne Hathaway), it will lead to an adventure both exhilarating and terrifying.

Using Dahl's fantastical horrors as a framework to examine racial tensions and divisions in the US. during the civil rights era is a fascinating (and relevant) one, but unfortunately the script doesn't do a lot with these rich possibilities.

Not helping matters is a cartoonish, completely over-the-top performance from Hathaway, whose one-note turn drains away most of the character's harsher qualities, and cannot hold a candle to Anjelica Huston's superb work in the 1990 film.

Co-writer/director Robert Zemeckis (Back To The Future, The Walk) knows how to handle complicated effects, and while everything convinces, the energetic hijinks lightens the overall atmosphere (there are still moments that may frighten youngsters).

Though this version overall is more faithful to Dahl's book (including its ending, which now feels like a set-up for a sequel), Roeg's 1990 effort is far superior in attempting to transfer the author's darker tendencies to the screen.

One just wishes that this production stayed in the hands of original director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), who for years was trying to bring the story to life as a stop-motion animation, and was going to stay closer to Dahl's nightmarish vision of children trying to survive a war against a group of truly nasty witches.

I Can Dream ■ I Can Dream is the posthumous album from Max Merritt. It's been released and features 10 songs that go back as far as 2002.

His career is well documented with numerous awards including being inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

■ John Rozentals tells his readers about GSM blends.

So what exactly is a GSM blend? Well, it's a dry red blended from three varieties - grenache, shiraz and mourvedre (aka mataro).

Though not always, apparently, do the varieties appear in that order of magnitude. Labelling a wine as MSG just doesn't have the same appeal, if you get my drift.

Each of the component varieties has a clear function.

Grenache adds its perfumed juiciness, and shiraz its trademark mid-palate richness and dark-berry flavours. Mourvedre normally does come last in the varietal mix and has the stiffness to make sure it's a red we're drinking.

The blend originated, I believe, in France's Rhone Valley, and remains popular there.

It is catching on in Australia, too, especially where there are old plantings of grenache and mourvedre. That is, mainly in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.

First acceptances for Blue Diamond Stakes

■ The spotlight on Victorian Racing will centre on the first of our major race meetings next year with the Blue Diamond Stakes the first to get the ball rolling.

The state's premier juvenile race for twoyear-olds, will be run at Caulfield on February 20. It is hoped that we have the big crowds back again to witness the action.

The $1.5 million ‘Neds’Blue Diamond Stakes will be run over 1200 metres, after 815 first acceptances were taken in mid-November.

Trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace lead the way with 63 acceptances, the duo already boasting five two-year-old winners so far this season.

They hold a strong hand in both number and quality with brilliant filly Enthaar, debutant stakes winner Fake Love, and Inglis Banner/ Golden Gift starlet, Sneaky Five, all entered.

The powerful group, Godolphin, have accepted with 54 of their own, Including the Merson Cooper Stakes winner, Anamoe.

Leading trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have nominated 53 youngsters.

Top trainer, Chris Waller, after his first Blue Diamond Stakes winner, has entered a total of 50 two-year-olds.

The strong team of Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig have entered quite a few including the Maribynong Plate winner, Finance Tycoon.

Graeme Begg who has already tasted Blue Diamond success with Written By in 2018, has nominated Ottawa Stakes winner, Dash.

The nominations also provide another reminder of the growing influence of Super Sire, I Am Invincible, with no less that 50 of his sons and daughters entered.

Other leading sires are well represented, such as the great sire, Snitzel, who has 46 noms; Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, 42; Written Tycoon, 37; and Not A Single Doubt,35, swell the ranks of the star sires.

In form trainer, Phillip Stokes, who has stables at Pakenham, and in South Australia, paid up for two lots of $5500, First Late entry fees; One is a nice Chestnut Snitzel colt, of the good mare, Beluga Blue, and another for his boom colt, Brazen Boy, although he disappointed at Moonee Valley.

Second acceptances for the 2021 ‘Neds’Blue Diamond Stakes close at 12 noon, on Tuesday January 5 at a fee of $440.

The MRC has pushed back the due date for the third declarations ($660) from Tuesday January 26, until 12 noon on Thursday January 28, to avoid the Australia Day public holiday.

Spring Racing Carnival campaign didn't go to plan either.

Mystic Journey boasts an impressive record at Moonee Valley, having won the Stock Stakes there over 1600 metres back in September.

After finishing second on the three occasions during the Spring Racing Carnival, Personal, powered home to win the Victorian Oaks, thanks to a great ride by top hoop, Damien Oliver.

The first winner of the All-Star Mile, Mystic Journey, delivered a fairy-tale conclusion to the first ever running at Flemington in 2019. This is Two weeks after securing her maiden Group One triumph in the Australian Guineas over 1600 metres.

The mare, affectionately known around the stable as ‘Betty’, put in another dominant display in the All-Star Mile to take home the cheque of $2.25 million winner's cheque, for her connections.

■ Top trainers were certainly quick off the mark when nominations were taken for the All-Star Mile.

The race will be run this time at Moonee Valley, after the initial race back in 2019, was at Flemington, and this year at Caulfield.

The winner of the inaugural, All Star Mile, Tasmania's champion mare, Mystic Journey, was one of the first to be nominated again by her trainer, Adam Trinder.

■ With everything up in the air this year, the Victorian Racing Media Association has put back their 2020 Personality of the Year, to Monday February 1 at the Emerald Hill Hotel in South Melbourne.

The prestigious VRC Bert Wolfe Award is named after the great late Herald Sun's Racing Editor.

The categories are the Best News and Best Feature areas and will proceed as normal on the day.

Judges are former Herald Sun Racing Editors Rhett Kirkwood and Ray Huxley.

The Inglis Group once again will provide the Best Breeding coverage.

Five nominations have been forwarded for the 2020 Personality of the Year.

Voting for the award among members of the VRMA, last Friday (Dec. 4).

Those who have been nominated, not in order, are leading trainer Tom Dabernig, jockey Jamie Kah, co-trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Melbourne Cup winning jockey Jye Mc Neil, and former AFL coach and now a trainer, Denis Pagan.

At the time of going to press, nothing had been finalised to allow most racing journalists and photographers to return to the track.

Set alight to put paid to rivals ■ Yarra Valley commenced the week on Monday November 30 with a eight event card.

Springfield's Ken Ward combined with Michael Bellman aboard honest 7Y0 Village Jasper-Skipper Patricia gelding Village Skipper to land the 1650 metre De Bortoli Pace.

Bred and raced by the Ward family, Village Skipper after a one/one trip from the bell following Lets Do It, finished best to prevail by 1.2 metres, with Greenough third 4.1 metres away after following the pair. The rate a slick 1-55.2.

■ Merrigum trainer/driver Luke Bryant was successful with 6Y0 Cr Commando-Shez Alrighty mare Lexington Queen in the Hi-Style Building Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres.

Despite racing exposed for the final circuit outside Bacardi Wood which led after a tussle with Excellent Drop, Lexington Queen was too tough at the business end, scoring by 5.4 metres from Bacardi Wood in a mile rate of 2-01.4.

Willdomxav coming from near last was third 5 metres back after coming from near last.

■ Monegeetta part-owner/trainer Wally Toczynski would have been highly elated when his 8Y0 Ponder-Our Last Holme gelding Ears Ponder driven by Tommy Hill scored in the Yarra Valley Toyota Pace over 2150 metres in a mile rate of 1-59.

Enjoying the run of the race from inside the second line trailing the poleline leader Trembita, Ears Ponder utilized the sprint lane to a nicety to greet the judge by 3 metres from the pacemaker.

Bronski Royal was third (on protest) a further 3 metres away after Righteously impeded his progress by locking wheels in the straight.

■ Three year old Kiwi bred Art Major-Lite Jagermeister colt Major Meister was ultra impressive in chalking up four wins in succession by taking the 2150 metre IGA Liquor Pace in 156.6.

Trained at Toolern Vale by Adam Kelly, Major Meister driven by Zac Phillips settling mid-field in the moving line from gate three on the second line as Denis William ahead of him went forward to lead prior to the bell.

Set alight with a circuit to travel to race exposed, Major Meister put pay to his rivals in the last lap to win in a breeze 6.9 metres in advance of Heavens Showgirl which ran home late from the middle of the field, with All Major also finishing late for third 3.7 metres back.

Began swiftly

■ At Terang on Tuesday, Hewood trainer Bec East's Big Jim-Regan Anonamiss filly Remain Anonamiss was a strong winner of the Goodtime Lodge 3Y0 Pace over 2180 metres.

Driven by Michael Bellman, Remain Anonamiss was taken back to the rear from gate five as Helgart began brilliantly from outside the front line to lead.

Latching to the back of Carramar Cee Smith three wide line in the last lap, Reamain Anonamiss (four wide on the final bend) finished at a great rate to register a 1.3 metre margin over the pacemaker in a rate of 2-00.8.

Kenya (one/two) was third 2.1 metres away in third place after also easing wide on the home turn.

■ Bec and Bellman brought up a double after smart 4Y0 Courage Under Fire-Tiz Herself gelding Strongnbold first up since May, snared the Scanlons Dairy Centre Pace over 1680 metres.

Beginning swiftly from gate three to lead, Strongnbold was always in control, running out an easy 9.2 metre victor in advance of El Banco along the sprint lane from last, with Lifeasweknowit third 1.6 metres back after trailing the winner. The mile rate 1-57.9.

■ Mt Gambier based Paul Rousch made a return to the winners list when 6Y0 Artesian-Hope Williams first starter Thelongroadnowhere scored in the 2180 metre Ridley Agriproducts Pace, giving Michael Bellman the middle leg of a driving treble.

Trailing the poleline leader Carramar Bromwich from gate two, Thelongroadnowhere used the sprint lane to prevail by a metre from a death-seating Major Maid (gate five) in a 2-05 mile rate. Good Jet (three back the markers one/one last lap - three wide home turn) was third 4.3 metres back.

■ Camperdown trainer Bruce McSween landed the Timboon Motors 3Y0 Pace over 2180 metres

Jaeden was third 7.5 metres away after racing exposed from gate two.

Brilliant finish

■ Mildura was the Wednesday venue and 7Y0 Rock N Roll Heaven-Dolly McD gelding Bernie Winkle chalked up his 20th success on the Sunraysia Circuit (36th overall) by taking the Zilzie Wines Pace over 2190 metres.

Trained at Strathfieldsaye by Julie Douglas and driven on this occasion by Ellen Tormey, Bernie Winkle was restrained from outside the front line to settle at the rear of the field as local hero Murranji Track exploded away from gate five to lead.

Still last with a circuit to travel in a medium tempo affair, Bernie Winkle commenced a forward move in the last lap only to be pushed very wide, making the home turn almost touching the outside fence.

Finishing brilliantly, Bernie Winkle handled his rivals with ease to record a 1.2 metre margin over SA visitor Ellmers Image (one/two at bell), with if-form gelding Caulonia Terror (one/one) third 1.4 metres back. The mile rate 1-59.5. It was Bernie's 196 race appearances having started his career at Addington in 2015.

Double day

■ It was double day on Thursday, with Charlton racing in the afternoon and Shepparton at night.

At Charlton Kate Hargreaves' 4Y0 DejarmbroFire Chase mare Wisp Of Smoke bred by John and Mary Meade was a strong winner of the North West AG Services Trotters Handicap over 2100 metres.

Stepping cleanly from 10 metres, Wisp Of Smoke driven by Alex Ashwood possied one/ one on the back of Primz Luck which dropped to trail the leader Gooroc Gambler after making an unsuccessful bid for the lead. Despite the tough trip, Wisp Of Smoke was too tough for the leader which battled on gamely after the early burn, scoring easily by 11.9 metres, with old timer Jaden Gil (one/one) third 3 metres back.

The mile rate 2-06.2.

■ Moonlight trainer Joanne Franklin combined with Jackie Barker aboard improving Imperial Count-Catchya Muscle gelding Glengarriff to capture the 2100 metre Pridgeon Automotif 3Y0 Trotters Mobile. Raced by Wedderburn's Gavan Holt who has spent many years in the sport, Glengarriff received a beaut passage from gate four following the leader Cork (gate two).

Taken into the clear prior to the final bend, Glengarriff raced away over the concluding stages to record a 1.3 metre margin in advance of Jazspur which raced exposed from gate six.

Lord Chancellor (three back the markers) was third 9.1 metres back. The winners mile rate 201.2.

■ Lockwood part-owner/trainer Danny Curran was victorious in the Egan & Taylor Accountants & Business Advisors 2Y0 Pace over 2100 metres with Sportswriter-Guessing gelding

Harryhoo in a rate of 2-01.2. With Jack Laugher in the sulky, Harryhoo from gate two trailed the pacemaker Soho Osaka before using the sprint lane to reach the judge by a neck clear of the leader, with Covered Kylie a head away in third place after racing in the open.

■ Ararat trainer/driver Michael Bellman's very honest 4Y0 Alta Christiano-Grace Anatomy mare Gracie Cullen chalked up her fifth success in 30 outings when taking the 1609 metre GMG Financial Group Pace. Given the run of the race from the pole trailing Luvhavinfun which speared away from outside the front line, Bella Cullen was always travelling comfortably and after being taken off her back on the home turn, finished best to prevail by 3.6 metres from the leader in 1-56.8. Esterna (one/one - three wide home turn) was third 1.9 metres back.

■ Sutton Grange owners Clive and Rachel Henderson along with Horsham's Shane Arnel were successful with 3Y0 Modern Art-Hotgossip gelding Van Gough in theMerry Christmas To All 638 CHRC Members Pace over 2100 metres.

Trained by next door neighbor Leigh Graham, Van Gough after starting from inside the second line was restrained by James Herbertson to settle with most of the field ahead of him as Attention Seeker led from gate two.

Sent forward when the speed slackened midrace to park outside the leader, Herbertson controlled the race to a nicety and Van Gough did the job well, painting a pretty picture as he registered a 2 metre margin from Attention Seeker and Keilah (one/one), returning a mile rate of 159.6.

■ Avenel part-owner/trainer/driver Juanita Breen produced a nice Kiwi bred 4Y0 Bettors Delight-Ginnie Moonmare by the name of Lottie Moon at Shepparton to land the VHRC - APG APTS Bonus Race Series Pace over 2190 metres.

First up in Oz, Lottie Moon was taken back from outside the front line to the tail of the field with Whata Glimpse leading from gate two.

Going forward wide in the last lap, Lottie Moon made the home turn right off the track, but picked up her rivals with ease in the straight to record a most impressive 2 metre margin over Lombo Idle Belief along the sprint lane off the back of the pacemaker, with Midnight Queen also using the sprint lane from three back for third 2.8 metres away. The mile rate 1-59.6.

Sweet passage

■ Jindera border hoppers Lyn and Leon Hancock are no strangers to Victoria having won numerous races over the years and were successful with 5Y0 Mr Feelgood-Nedra Nova mare Goodtime Nedra in the 1690 metre View APG's onlineguides@apgold .com.au Pace Final for horses which competed in the heats held the previous Sunday.

Driven by Leon, Good Time Nedra which won her heat enjoyed a sweet passage from inside the second row trailing the poleline leader Good Guy Mac and after coming away from the inside on the home turn, raced away to score by 9.5 metres in a slick 1-55.2 from the pacemaker. Rockon Loxley was third a head back off a mid-field trip.

■ Shepparton's Clive Dalton trained the Allwoods Stud Farm owned 4Y0 Majestic SonSunbeam Song gelding Allwoods Sunbeam to greet the judge in the APG & APTS Offers $2.2m in prizemoney Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres.

Driven by Josh Aiken, Allwoods Sunbeam (gate 6) settled three back in the moving line with polmarker Opia leading. Positions changed in the back straight on the final occasion when Opia galloped allowing Majic Fair to stride clear with backmarker Fratellino in hot pursuit. Taken wide on turning, Allwoods Sunbeam finished determinedly to nose out a game Fratellino in a 205,8 mile rate. Majic Fair fought on doggedly for third 4.9 metres back.

■ Tatura trainer Craig Turnbull and reinswoman daughter Abbey have done a wonderful job with 3Y0 Pet Rock-Davids Lady gelding Jemsons Pet who scored in the 2190 metre Become A VHRC Member Today Pace.

■ Travellers to Western Australia's favourite holiday island, Rottnest, will soon be able to experience a new level of comfort and style thanks to the acquisition of a new vessel by Rottnest Fast Ferries.

The new Harbour Master ferry, which will travel from Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth's north to Rottnest, will have a significant positive impact on passenger numbers to the island.

It has multiple decks, three passenger levels, oversized windows for improved viewing, and a spacious cabin.

Owners believe the twin hull catamaran will provide the smoothest ride to Rottnest.

The vessel is currently being refitted and is scheduled to commence service from Boxing Day, with a capacity of 420 passengers per trip.

The operator has also announced a new daily Kids Travel Free offer - where two children per adult ferry fare can travel to Rottnest free any day of the week.
